IT is with an unusual degree of personal satisfaction that I find myself in a position to pay tribute to the memory of Henry Marion Howe. One could not have spent any length of time in the presence of Dr. Howe without profiting intellectually. I do not hesitate to say that my years of association with him were the most stimulating of all my years of metallurgical study. He always impressed one with his own eager search for knowledge. Never dependent on the written word alone he sought information from anyone whose opinion he valued. His ability to piece together bits of apparently conflicting data from various sources so as to build up a logical hypothesis was unique. A small slight man with the intellect of genius he would have gone to the top in any endeavor he undertook and it was fortunate for metallurgy that its study attracted him as it did. Howe was a modest man. I like to recall an incident which left a lasting impression with me. The lab- oratory in his home, "Green Peace," was in the basement and access was by way of stairs leading down from his secretary's room. In using these stairs my attention was attracted many times to an ordinary cardboard shoe box which reposed on the shelf above the landing. It was crudely labeled on its side in black ink "Vanity Box." My curiosity was aroused to the point that I finally asked his secretary what it was. With some amusement she took the box from its shelf on the stairway, opened it and showed me its contents—numerous letters, from the foremost men of science of every civilized country throughout the world, commending his "Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron." I recall that in reply to one who thought there was not enough of Howe's own researches in his book he wrote, "Primarily I am a writer, secondarily an investigator." Howe wrote to make his readers think. No one ever strove harder than he to be right but above all, whether his viewpoint proved ultimately to be right or wrong, he was always content if by his stand, he provoked a reader to take the next step along the path to greater knowledge. I doubt that he was ever afraid to be wrong for he was always secure in the thought that his effort was guided by a sincere search for the truth. One continually searching for truth is entitled to occasional excursions up the wrong alley. A glance backward to the metallurgical confusion of some thirty to forty years ago, or need one go back so far, provides convincing proof of what a host of companions one may have in a common acceptance of ideas which the future will prove to be wholly untenable. Well over a hundred years have passed since investigators have interested themselves in the effect of increasing the temperature of iron and steel on their mechanical properties. We are told by Charles Walrandl in "Industrial Annals" for June 11, 1822, that bend tests, conducted in a Russian steel works of Prince Demidoff, on steel bars "highly heated" and bent during cooling became brittle when bent at an iris blue color. He concluded, "That when steel is heated to a temperature between 473°F and 662°F the mettle was more brittle between these limits than at a much lower or at a much higher temperature." It was a curious bit of information recognized as true to this day and still not explained satisfactorily. In 1878 Charles Houston in Annales de Mines associated this brittleness with an increase in tensile strength at 572°F. When this relatively low temperature is exceeded it is recognized that steel becomes weaker as temperature is increased up to the melting point, where no strength of practical importance remains. It is easy to believe, in fact it goes without saying, that this weakening as the temperature of a metal is increased is the result of the motion of the atoms making up the metal, a motion which itself is evidence of the temperature increase. However, if we are considering iron or steel we find that this decrease in strength is not a steady one, for, besides the increase in strength just referred to, one comes to a temperature, the critical temperature, where results of tests indicate the metal to be extremely weak and then as temperature increases to become sensibly stronger again. This apparent anomaly was made the subject of the first Howe Memorial Lecture, delivered by Albert Sauveur in 1924. It may be of interest to review these findings of Sauveur. The distribution of cobalt and vanadium over non-equivalent crystallographic sites in C14-type Zr(VCo), alloys has been investigated. An anomalous X-ray scattering technique developed by Skolnick, Kondo. and lavine7 by which the separation in the scattering factors of two similar atoms can be enhanced was employed. Six alloys spanning the pseudobinary section ZrV1.6Co0.4-ZrVO.6CO1.4 at 10pct steps showed a nonrandom compositionally dependent distribution. Specifically, at high vanadium content cobalt preferentially occupied sites of type (6h) and vanadium, sites of type (2a; at low vanadium content the reverse was observed. In addition to the distribution fraction the structural parameters x and z were obtained. There was no significant deviation of these parameters from those obtained in the ideal C14 structure. Certain suggestions are made to account for the observed nonrandomness in the distribution of atoms on the two types of sites. INTERMETALLIC compounds of formula AB2 iso-morphous with MgCu2, MgZn2, and MgNi2 are known as Laves phases. Because Laves phases exhibit high symmetry and coordination numbers, the highest possible for an AB2-type compound,1 they are among the most frequently observed compounds in nature. In recent years interest has centered about the purely transition metal Laves phases2-' in efforts to understand the function of atomic size and electronic structure in the formation of these compounds. It has been observed that pseudobinary Laves phase systems often show a variation of structure across the phase diagram. Such a system is the ZrV2-ZrCo2 in which the structure varies from cubic MgCu2 to hexagonal MgZn2 to cubic MgCu2.4 Some understanding about the conditions under which the second modification is stable can perhaps be gained by studying the distribution of cobalt and vanadium atoms on lattice sites in the MgZn2 modification of the system ZrV2-ZrCo2. In both the MgZn2 and MgNi2-types there exist nonequivalent positions open to occupancy by the B element, whereas in the MgCu2 prototype all sites are equivalent. Skolnick, Kondo, and La-vine7 have developed an anomalous scattering technique suitable for this type of investigation. Whereas the influence of size on the formation of a Laves phase is well recognized, no substantial evidence has been put forth in support of the size ratio dependence of a particular prototype. Berry and Raynor8 suggested that RA /RB ratio does indeed affect the type of structure that is chosen, MgZn2 compounds tending to cluster about 1.225 while MgCu2 compounds were found at larger deviations from this ratio. Dwight,3 however, from a study of 164 Laves phases does not believe this generalization to be justified. Electronic effects are certain to play a part in the stability of Laves phases in general and in the choice of a structure type in particular. For example, size along would favor the formation of Laves compounds of Ti, Zr, Hf, Ta, or Nb as the A element with nickel or copper as the B element. The absence of such is attributed to an unfavorable electron : atom ratio by Elliott and rostoker.4 Early experiments of Laves and witte9 with pseudobinary and pseudoternary systems of the three prototypes established the dependence of crystal structure upon electron: atom ratios. They observed that the MgCu2 structure dissolved elements of higher valency until the electron: atom ratio of =1.8 was reached; the MgZn2 likewise dissolved elements of lower valency replacing zinc. witte,6 from calculations of the electron : atom volumes of Brillouin Zones, obtained limits of stability for the prototypes MgCu2 and MgZn2. Elliott and Rostoker4 used these limits with considerable success in the all-transition element Laves phases they investigated. According to witte,6 compounds between the electron :atom ratios of 1.80 and 2.32 were of the MgZn2 type; those above and below exhibited the MgCu2-type structure. On the basis of these limits and an assumed valency of zirconium based upon the near tetra-valence of titanium, Elliott and Rostoker obtained valencies for the first transition series elements. For the Laves phases with which this investigation is concerned, ZrV2 and ZrCo2, the authors calculated electron :atom ratios of 2.54 and 1.56, respectively. These ratios are for the MgCu2-type structure and straddle the stability band of the MgZn2 modification. One could, therefore, predict that a pseudobinary system ZrV2-ZrCo2 should pass through the MgZn2 modification in traversing the composition diagram from one end to the other. Implicit in this assumption is a smooth change of the electron: atom ratio from 2'54 to 1.56. MOSS10 states that his finding the low temperature structure of ZrCr2 to be C15 instead of C14 alters greatly Elliott's valency of zirconium and hence the assumed valencies of the other metals. THE migration of carbon in austenite under the influence of an electric current has been observed qualitatively several times.14 Lebedev and Guterman5 recently have reported quantitative measurements; their method consisted of welding a low-carbon to a high-carbon wire, passing current, and later estimating the carbon distribution metal-lographically. We believe the method reported in this paper is superior in principle since electrolytic migration and ordinary diffusion are not necessarily coupled as in the weld method; also for the first time the extent of migration is determined by combustion analysis for carbon. A uniform tubular specimen (S.A.E. 1045 or 1095) was mounted as illustrated in the figures. the whole assembly being in an atmosphere of purified nitrogen. Direct current (129 to 226 amp at 0.65 to 1.0 v) served as source both of heat and of potential gradient for carbon migration. The duration of experiment was 7.5 to 12 hr, during which time the temperature was controlled (±10°C) manually. The experimental conditions are indicated in the first five columns of table I. With this experimental arrangement, the temperature initially has a maximum value at the central plane. Also, in this vicinity (by virtue of the symmetry), the carbon entering any volume element is equal in quantity to that leaving; the loss or accumulation of carbon occurs near the electrodes since the carbon moves uniformly near the center and is "frozen" at the cold ends. Hence, providing the time of experiment is not sufficiently long to seriously influence the conditions at the central plane, carbon crosses this plane only under the influence of the electrical potential gradient and not under the influence of temperature or concentration gradient. The amount of carbon which has crossed this plane was determined by combustion analysis of the two halves of the specimen. The results of these analyses are shown in the sixth and seventh columns of table I. It will be noted that substantial amounts of carbon migrated from the anode portion to the cathode portion (except at 920°C, which temperature was too low to exhibit the effect in the allotted time). In spite of precau-tions taken, considerable decarburization occurred as may be seen by comparing cols. 8 and 5. In three cases (indicated by asterisks in table I) the specimen was ground on one side, polished, and examined metallographically before analysis. One specimen was normalized and re-examined. Micrographs of selected areas in specimens 4 and 6 are shown in figs. 1 and 2, respectively. Evidence of carbon migration from the anode toward the cathode is quite apparent. Fig. 2 shows abundant graphite as well as cementite in a region near the cathode. The temperature of this zone is estimated at about 800°C. In fig. 1, particularly in the micrograph on the extreme right (the right side of which is of unaltered carbon content), there is evidence of slight depletion of carbon in the immediate vicinity of the cathode as contrasted to the general increase in carbon of the cathode half of the specimen. Although this may be attributed in part to decarbur-ization, it is believed that it is occasioned also by thermal diffusion—migration (of carbon) from a cool to a hot zone4—a phenomenon superimposed upon the electrical migration. The Salida smelting plant, owned by the Ohio & Colorado Smelting & Refining Co., is situated at an altitude of 7,000 ft., about 2 miles west of Salida, Colo., and 215 miles southwest of Denver. Salida is a division point on the Denver & Rio Grande R. R. where the narrow-gage line serving the San Juan region joins the through standard gage. This narrow-gage road also serves the coal and coke companies at Crested Butte and the lime quarries and mines at Monarch and Garfield, which are only 20 miles distant. These facts, together with the possibility of an appropriate site, doubtless influenced the builders to locate at this point. The smelting plant and yard occupy 80 acres of land on the northeast side of the Arkansas River. The slope of the ground is such as to permit of the ore being delivered by cars at a point 25 ft. above the feed floor; and in front of the furnaces there is a fall of 50 ft. for the slag dump. A recent purchase of river bottom has provided slag room for 20 years. As originally constructed, the plant consisted of four blast furnaces, 40 by 144 in. at tuyéres, two copper-matting furnaces, dust chamber, stack, power plant, blowers, sampling works, and one railroad trestle about 16 ft. from bed floor to rails. Later 12 hand roasters of excellent design were added and the practice of smelting leady matte in a copper-matting furnace was abandoned. Since the plant passed under the present management the equipment has been increased so that the following is a brief description of the same at this date: Two lead blast furnaces, 48 by 180 in. at tuyéres, 17 ft. 6 in. tuyéres to feed floor; four lead blast furnaces, 40 by 144 in. at tuyéres, 17 ft. 6 in. tuyéree to feed floor; two copper-matting furnaces, not used; blast-furnace flue, 900 ft.; area 245 sq. ft.; blast-furnace stack, 150 ft.; above furnace floor, 190 ft. When smelting a 500-ton charge per day, the gases approximate 63,700 cu. ft. per minute and travel at a speed of 260 ft. per minute. The slag is hauled by a 10-ton electric locomotive; the slag shells and settler refuse are elevated to a bin on the feed floor by an electric hoist. The matte is tapped in 1,600-lb. cakes and loaded into cars

In the hope that a brief description of the conditions that are favorable or unfavorable to success in the practical treatment of titaniferous ores in the blast-furnace may not be without interest to the members of the Institute, the present paper is submitted. The class of ores of which I speak may be described as magnetites, with a gangue of siliceous matter, in which a portion of the silica is replaced by titanic acid. Professor Dana, in his System of Mineralogy, gives a long list of representative analyses of titanic iron ore in which the percentage of titanic acid varies from 59 down to 34. If the percentage is below the latter figure, the ore is no longer recognized as a "titanic ore;" although, according to my experience, titanic acid is present, in small quantities, in almost all ores. In the methods followed in ordinary analysis it is usually included with the "insoluble matter," unless special search is made for it. In the ores usually regarded as "titanic "the proportion of titanic acid frequently assumes quasi definite percentages, such as from 4 to 5, 8 to 9,12 to 13, and so on, in an ascending scale to those higher percentages that do not at present concern us. The proportions quoted characterize large masses of ore that are now accessible to market and are lying idle only on account of the titanic stigma. My experience with titanic acid in the furnace began in England, fourteen years ago, with my being employed as chemist by the manager of the Norwegian Titanic Iron Company, which was at that time smelting, without mixture, ilmenite from Norway in a furnace 16' X 50'. The process, regarded as a process, was a perfect success; but the enormous quantity of fuel required, the small quantity of iron in the ore, and the cost and uncertainty of importation militated seriously against its commercial success, and a few years saw the attempt abandoned. A simple graphical technique is presented for rapidly determining the ratio of resolved shear stress on slip systems in single crystals to the applied stress (Schmid factor) for various simple states of stress. Master plots are presented which, when used in conjunction with an appropriate stereo-graphic projection, allow one to determine the Schmid factor for all slip systems in a crystal of given orientation. It is shown that one such plot suffices for simple tension or compression, flex-ural bending, and biaxial compression, while a combination of two different plots must be used for torsion and simple shear. STUDIES of the deformation behavior of single crystals are most valuable when the applied stresses are resolved onto the various slip systems of the crystal. A careful study of the available slip systems and proper selection of the state of stress used and the specimen orientation can then yield quantitative information about the probability of specific dislocation reactions, the strength of barriers to plastic flow, and the mechanisms of yielding and flow in general. It is the purpose of this work to analyze some common states of stress used in deformation studies and to present a simplified way of determining for these cases the ratio of the resolved shear stress on the slip systems to the applied stress (Schmid factor). I) CALCULATIONS We first define two orthogonal coordinate systems: one based on the specimen geometry (a right circular cylinder of radius, R, is considered here) and one based on the particular slip system of interest. The unit vectors and angles specifying the two coordinate systems and the relationship between them are listed in Table I. The relationships among the various angles and unit vectors are shown on a stereographic projection in Fig. 1. The pyrites used in making sulfuric acid in the United States have been largely imported from Spain and Canada, the Spanish imports amounting to nearly 1,000,000 tons per annum in the pre-war period. The greatly increased use of sulfuric acid and the cutting off of these Spanish imports, incident to war conditions, brought about a threatened shortage of sulfur supplies during the war period. The bituminous-coal mines of ccrtain districts have, for many years, furnished a small tonnage of pyrite in the form of coal brasses. A mechanical concentrator at Danville, Ill., for a number of years, has been treating hand-picked lump pyrite and coal from the picking belt and from the mines and a small plant near Gillespie, Ill., for a few months has been recovering pyrite from washery refuse. Many mines throughout Illinois, Indiana, Western Kentucky, Ohio, and Pennsylvania have shipped an occasional car of the hand-cleaned lump pyrite. Only a very small percentage of the available pyrite has been recovered in this way, however, as usually the miners throw such lumps into the gob with slate and other impurities. It has been estimated that the western Indiana coal field could furnish more than 100,000 tons of pyrite per annum. The present production is very small. The possibility of furnishing the domestic trade with pyrites recovered as a byproduct from coal-mining operations appears attractive but there are certain features difficult to overcome. Pyrite, to be used in acid making, must meet with certain requirements as to size and purity. Lump ore for grate burners should be under 3 in. (7.6 cm.) and over 1 in. (2.5 cm.) in diameter. Fines for use in mechanical roasters should be under quarter mesh. The material should be high in sulfur, free from arsenic and phosphorus, and as low in carbon as possible. The pyrite obtained from coal can be made to meet all the above requirements, but it is difficult to remove all the carbon. The pyrite in coal occurs as bands and nodules of varying thickness and size and of comparative purity, but mixed with this is more or less web sulfur. The web sulfur carries admixed coal, which may make the concentrate run up to several per cent. carbon. This makes the concentrates subject to firing, causes heavy consumption of niter, and lowers the acid-plant capacity, due to dilution of gases. The hand-cleaning methods

The original graphical method proposed by Darken and Gurry for predicting which elements are soluble in a given element was slightly modified and was used to predict terminal solubilities in 1455 known binary combinations. it was found that the modified Darken and Gurry method had a reliability of 61.7 pct in predicting extensive solid solubility (greater than 5 at. pct) and of 84.8pct in predicting limited solid solubility (less than 5 at. pct), an over-all reliability percentage of 76.6. Using the same experimental data, it was found that using only the simple Hume-Rothery size-effect criterion was 50.1 pct reliable in predicting extensive solid solubility, only slightly better than a purely random choice. and 90.3 pct reliable for predicting limited solid solubility, an over-all reliability percentage of 67.6. THE first rational rules for determining a priori whether two metals are not freely soluble in the solid state were announced by Hume-Rothery and coworkers.1,2 These well-known rules have been accorded a special place in metallurgical literature. Since the "electronegative" and "relative valence effect" rules of Hume-Rothery were only qualitative in nature it was difficult to use them in a quantitative analysis. The next major step was made by Darken and gurry3 and apparently went unexplored for a number of years. They prepared graphs illustrating the influence of both electronegativity and size difference on the solubility of elements in silver, magnesium, and aluminum, and they drew elliptical figures, whose maximum width was ±15 pct of the solvent radius and the maximum height was ±0.4 electronegativity units. The purpose of the present paper is to assess and compare the effectiveness of using the simple size-factor and the Darken-Gurry criteria to predict which elements will be soluble and insoluble in a given solute. In 1957, waber4 prepared Darken-Gurry plots for determining the solutes that were likely to be soluble in 6 and plutonium and introduced an inner ellipse as an aid to determining which elements should be soluble to a considerable extent. As illustrated in Fig. 1, the major axis of the outer ellipse corresponded to ±0.4 electronegativity units (OD) while the minor axis corresponded to ±15 pct of the radius of the solvent phase (OB). This simultaneous "action" of the two Hume-Rothery criteria was used to indicate which elements would have little or no solubility in the host lattice, namely those elements whose points lay outside this ellipse. An inner ellipse, "centered" over the same point of the solvent was drawn with ±0.2 electronegativity units (OC) and ±8 pct (OA) as the major and minor axes. Solutes with points lying within the inner ellipse were expected to be capable of forming extensive solid solutions with the host element. Use of this method of applying the earlier Hume-Rothery criteria was moderately successful for plutonium. For 6-phase plutonium, only one element out of the eight predicted to be extensively soluble was known to be almost insoluble, and of the sixteen elements predicted to have more restricted solubility, five were known to be essentially insoluble. The success of discerning solubility in the E phase by this method was comparable. One prediction made on the basis of this analysis was that the heavier rare earth metals, such as holmium, erbium, and thulium, should be soluble in the 6 phase, whereas the lighter rare earth elements, such as lanthanum or

The application of wet cleaning processes for the beneficiation of bituminous coal has created in some localities a problem in the recovery and disposal of fine solids in the washery water. The maximum allowable concentration of these solids in the washery circuit that is consistent with satisfactory operation of the cleaning units remains a controversial point. It has, however, been generally recognized for a number of years that some degree of control should be exerted over the concentration of such material. Early methods of control involved intermittent or continuous discharge of a portion of the plant slurry into near-by streams or settling ponds, and this persisted even after the adoption of settling tanks or cones. The practice is not always economical, for two reasons: first, because of the waste of coal, and, second, because it is sometimes difficult and expensive to obtain an adequate supply of water. The latter condition often is aggravated by chemical treatment of the make-up water that is necessary to prevent excessive corrosion of plant equipment. The modern approach to this problem has been the adoption of continuous thickening devices. However, because such equipment occupies considerable plant space and is somewhat expensive to construct, the practice of loading these thickeners beyond their rated capacity is widespread, therefore often the performance of such units is not altogether satisfactory. In recent years, European washeries have increased the rate of settling of the fine coal from the slurry by the addition of specially prepared starch solutions. These reagents cause flocculation of the solid particles and thereby increase the rate of sedimentation. The first important work on the flocculation and clarification of coal slurry was done by Henry, who developed the Henry process and used it successfully in Belgian preparation plants. Soon after the initiation in Belgium, the process was introduced into England, where subsequent investigation developed similar processes, which were successfully used in

WITHIN the last three years, aerial mapping has made wonderful progress. Its three sources of development in North America may be enumerated as follows: (1) The work of the U. S. Army Air. Service and Corps of Engineers at the McCook Experimental Field, Dayton, Ohio. This is generally regarded as the backbone of this class of endeavor in the United States. (2) In Canada, a great deal has been accomplished in a practical way by methods that have not even been tried out in the United States. Under the leadership of the late Doctor Deville, the Dominion Land Surveyors have turned out reconnaissance maps of large areas at very, small cost. (3) Private capital has contributed a great deal toward development of aerial mapping in a practical way in the United States. Prominent in this regard stands the Fairchild Aerial Surveys, Inc. which has spent large sums in research and development work, especially in the construction of aerial cameras. Its camera is, at present, the official camera of the U. S. Army and Navy Air Services, also, of the Canadian and Brazilian governments. Aerial photographic surveying is a flexible process and adapted to a variety of uses. To date, it has proved. of direct practical value for engineering projects such as reservoir and power transmission surveys, railroad location, drainage, harbor front studies; also, for many commercial purposes, tax assessment, city planning, forest surveys, and lawsuits. In a few instances, aerial photographs have been used successfully by geologists as base maps on which to record field observations, thereby dispensing with pacing and compass surveys. There is reason to believe that, eventually, the aerial map will find wide application in the work of geologists. The reason for advancing this opinion is that aerial maps have, in other fields, proved more complete as regards detail than maps made by standard processes of surveying and drafting, and often are more accurate than the latter. At the present time, five distinct uses are being made of aerial photographs: There is the "oblique" photograph taken at an angle with the horizon; it is used extensively for illustrations in newspapers, magazines, and advertisements. Also, for reconnaissance purposes, it has been found of great practical value. For illustrating reports of engineers and geologists, it offers many obvious advantages. In the Canadian Surveys, maps have been compiled from oblique photographs.

In an earlier paper1 we discussed a simple, rapid method of taking samples of liquid steel and analyzing them for oxygen, which, though possibly not absolutely accurate (as is likewise true of all other methods), certainly yields results that are satisfactorily consistent. Accordingly, samples from hundreds of heats ill different shops were analyzed for oxygen, with results sufficient in number to be handled statistically and permit estimation of some general trends. Measurements were made in acid as well as in basic open hearths, throughout the refining period, to learn how stirring, blocking, adding ore or lime or sand, affects the oxygen content of the bath; we also followed the changes brought about by tapping, teeming, and deoxidizing. Some of these results, discussed in an earlier paper,2 bring out the dominant role of the carbon-oxygen reaction in regulating degree of oxidation both of metal and of slag, also the marked variability of concentration of dissolved oxygen [0] in excess of that which would be in equilibrium with carbon and with carbon monoxide at a partial pressure of one atmosphere. As a logical beginning on this complex problem, we take up in the present paper the variability of this excess oxygen, A[O], when other factors are as constant as they ever are in open-hearth operation; namely, toward the end of the refining period, when the bath may be regarded as in the comparatively steady state it approaches in absence of disturbing factors. This condition was chosen because by that time the significant reactions, except carbon oxidation, between slag and metal have come to substantial equilibrium; this facilitates interpretation of the complex situation and thus perinits more definite conclusions to be drawn. This excess concentration of oxygen, A[O], in the metal is needed, of course, to make the steelmaking process go at a reasonable rate; alternatively it may be regarded as a measure of the virtual pressure increment above one atmosphere, or of the degree of supersaturation, of carbon monoxide in the metal. According to our measurements, the excess concentration A[0] in liquid steel varies from about 0.009 to 0,035 per cent oxygen by weight. It is quite sensitive to change of conditions, being altered temporarily by operations such as stirring with green poles, additions of ore, lime, or sand; but as the disturbance works itself out, it resumes a level within the intermediate range characteristic of the steady state. The dike here described is exposed in the workings of the Wedge and Bachelor mines, on the southern side of Red Canon, north of the town of Ouray, Colorado. Its course is north 80° east, or nearly east and west, and it hades to the north about 10°. It rarely outcrops, and was nowhere seen at the surface near the mines. A specimen collected by Dr. A. C. Spencer about two miles to the westward, near the mouth of Red Creek, indicates, however, a probable exposure of the dike near this point. The Wedge and Bachelor mines lie in a nearly horizontal series of fine-grained, light-grey sandstones, alternating with beds of very fine-grained shale of the same color. The shale as encountered underground is unusually compact and massive, but weathers readily on exposure, and splits much after the manner of ordinary shale. When fresh it closely resembles some finely arenaceous limestones, but it does not effervesce with acids, and is eseentially a fine, indurated, siliceous silt. Many fires have occurred in the mines of Butte in recent years, and while all have been of a serious nature, simply because they were mine fires, six of them have been especially dangerous in respect to loss of life and property, and the expense of extinguishing or controlling them. It is not my intention to discuss the relative merits of methods used in fighting these different fires because the conditions under which they occurred varied in each case, and it was not always advisable to expend the large sum of money necessary to actually extinguish them if they could be bulk-headed off from the rest of the mine. It is needless to say that everything possible has been done to check all fires at the beginning, but without success in some cases; and it has then become necessary to bulkhead all connections to them, in which state several now exist. The mine fires of Butte, or fires in any mine, may be divided into two classes, namely: Those occurring in accessible workings, and those occurring in inaccessible workings; because these two conditions govern to the greatest extent the methods of fighting fires. Accessibility and inaccessibility in the case of mine fires concern not only new open workings and old closed workings, respectively, but also the condition of the ventilation in and about those places. When a fire is accessible at the start it should not be difficult to confine it to a small area and extinguish it in a relatively short time, but when it is impossible to actually reach a fire in old filled, abandoned workings, or there is no opening by which the gases may be conducted away from the fire zone, then the time consumed in changing those conditions permits the fire to increase to such an extent that it is a long, hard fight to overcome it. These different conditions have been met in Butte, and of the six fires of serious proportions the Steward mine fire and the High Ore-Modoc mine fire were in new accessible workings and were extinguished in a month or so. The Anaconda mine fire, the Leonard-Minnie Healy mine fire, the West Colusa mine fire, and the Mountain View mine fire, were all inaccessible. THE 650-ton underground mill of The Empire Zinc Company of Colorado (a subsidiary of The New Jersey Zinc Co.) serves the Eagle mine at Gilman in the Battle Mountain mining district of Colorado. The topography is rough, the mine and mill being under Battle Mountain and the adit entrance in the north wall of the canyon of the Eagle River, which is here a steel) gorge. The town of Gilman stands on a shoulder of the mountain at altitude 8975 ft., above sea level, along the Pike's Peak ocean to ocean highway and contains the company office and the usual facilities of a modern mining town. The railway contact is at Belden, altitude 8370 ft., at the bottom of the gorge directly below Gilman, where the westbound track of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad is cut along the north bank and the eastbound track along the south bank of the river. A general description of the mine, mill and service facilities, with an account of the geology, character of the ore and methods of mining and milling having previously been published in a series of articles', this paper will discuss with as little repetition as practicable the reasons for building the mill underground rather than as a conventional structure, the methods of construction employed and the experiences gained in what is apparently the pioneer plant of this type and extent. There is a large historical background for underground plant construc-tion. From the dim past caves have been used for dwellings, stables, storage and shops. It was natural that where caves were available their many advantages led to their enlargement to suit convenience and where they were not available but the ground conditions, topography and, drainage were favorable, to the construction of artificial caves. In the vicinity of Epernay, France, extensive underground chambers protect the manufacture and storage of champagne-an intricate and ingenious application of chemical engineering-and in recent years these plants have been mechanized by the installation of conveyor systems. Banded siliceous manganese-iron bearing sediments recognized as distinctive facies of Algoma-type iron formation constitute low-grade resources of manganese in many countries. Manganiferous facies associated with oxide and carbonate facies of iron formation have iron to manganese ratios ranging from 0.2 to 2 and commonly about one. Manganiferous facies up to 30 m thick occurring separately or with other iron formation facies are associated with cherts, carbonates, shales, turbidites, tuffs, and lavas. Primary cherty manganiferous facies and their gondite metamorphic equivalents represent significant manganese resources and are protores for higher-grade deposits derived by secondary enrichment processes.

Four portraits have recently been hung in the rooms of the Institute, in recognition of four illustrious men with whom we, as mining engineers and metallurgists, may claim fellowship. Luther. Martin Luther is often spoken of as a miner's son; but it is less generally known that John Luther, his father, was, in a small way, a metallurgist as well as a miner, and that Martin Luther himself, in his youth, worked in a forge or bloomary established by his father at Mansfeld, Saxony. Since this is the only manual occupation on his part of which we have ally record, it is fair to assume that the great scholar and reformer derived from his work in this department the practical familiarity with the conditions of human labor so abundantly evinced in the homely illustrations which accompany even his serious arguments, and in the witty apothegms of his famous " table-talk." At the same time, I must confess that I have not been able to find in any of the works of Luther distinct allusions to mining or metallurgy. Körner. Theodor Körner, a student at the Mining Academy of Freiberg, Saxony, threw himself into the German War of Freedom in the first decade of the 19th Century. He was a poet of no mean rank; and his " Song of the Sword " is one of the great lyrics of literature. This poem was written but a few days before he died in battle. In many respects, Körner may be compared with our American hero Theodore Winthrop, who similarly met a glorious fate, and left behind him prophetic indications of geniue, of which his premature death prevented the complete fulfillment. I am informed by a member of the Institute that Körner's admirable collection of minerals is still preserved at Dresden.

FROM earliest recorded times, limestone has been employed in the industrial life of peoples of all sections of the world where it exists. It is widely distributed and therefore has been available in almost every country and has been employed for a variety of purposes. Its earliest use was for buildings, since it is more easily quarried and dressed than most other kinds of rocks and so could be utilized by early inhabitants, poorly equipped with tools. The next use was in the manufacture of lime, which was employed by the ancients in mortar. These two uses of limestone are still all important, but they have been overshadowed in scores of regions by literally hundreds of new applications for raw lime-stone or products made from it. Anyone familiar with modern manufacturing processes can quickly call to mind many industries in which limestones are essential, and new uses are continually coming to notice. Any enumeration would probably be incomplete and soon out of date.

Phosphorus combines with copper in various proportions, forming true alloys, some of which are of commercial importance. These materials find wide application as deoxidizers and as a means of introducing phosphorus into other alloys, as in phosphor-bronze. Phosphor-coppers containing 10 and 15 per cent. of phosphorus are the commercial grades that are most generally offered. Each has certain advantages when used in making other alloys. The 10 per cent, grade of phosphor-copper has an advantage over the 15 per cent. in that it has a much lower melting point and can be prepared by certain methods with a much lower loss in phosphorus. The 15 per cent. grade has the advantage of lower freight rates per unit of phosphorus and, by the method to be described, a uniform product can be prepared with practically no loss of phosphorus. Alloys of copper and phosphorus containing any desired percentage of phosphorus lower than 15 per cent. can be prepared by melting together the requisite amounts of copper and 15 per cent. phosphor-copper. Processes for making phosphor-copper may be divided into two classes as follows: (1) Those depending on the smelting of phosphate rock or superphosphate of calcium with copper or copper-bearing materials, and coal or other carbonaceous material; (2) those depending on the direct combination of metallic copper and elemental phosphorus. A number of formulas for preparing phosphor-copper according to the first method have been published. The Metal Industry' gives the following: Superphosphate of calcium, 60 lb.; granulated copper, 30 1b.; finely powdered coal, 10 1b. Similar formulas are given by Brannt2 and others, and detail variations are covered by patents, such as those of L. A. Jeffs3 and H. A. Webster.4 Among the objections to this method of producing phosphor-copper are the large amounts of raw material and resulting slag to be handled, and the difficulty of getting a satisfactory fusion. S. Skowronski5 found that at 1300' C. (2372' F.) it was impossible to get a good fusion
