The reaction COSO4(c)?CoO(c) + So3(g)was investigated from 950° to 1170OK by two different methods. The sulfate was decomposed in a previously evacuated space and Pso3 calculated from the measured total pressure on the assumption that Pso2 = 2P02. The sulfate was also decomposed under conditions of controlled oxygen pressure. The difference in the results obtained by these experimental techniques is attributed to the effects of thermal diffusion. The standard free energy change for the reaction is given by ?F° = 66,292 + 17.273T log T — 102.57 T (±300 cal/mole). It was found by DTA and X-ray diffraction studies that CoS04 undergoes a transformation at 617°± 4°C. THE metal sulfates may decompose directly to the oxide or pass through one or more intermediate basic sulfates. Provided the oxidation state of the cation does not change in the course of the reaction, the decompositions may be described in general as follows: One of the major objectives of this work was to determine the validity of Eq. [3] as much of the existing sulfate data has been calculated from decomposition pressures by Eq. [5]. The type of apparatus generally used for these measurements consists of a reaction vessel at high temperature which communicates with a manometer at room temperature. A temperature gradient is thus imposed on the gas phase causing thermal diffusion which brings about a partial separation of the different gaseous species present in an initially uniform mixture. The basic theory and experimental facts associated with this phenomenon are summarized elsewhere1 and it will suffice to state here that the heavier gaseous species diffuses down the temperature gradient. Since thermal diffusion destroys the homogeneity of the gas phase, it is not necessarily true that Pso2 = 2Po2 in any particular volume element of the gas phase even though there are twice as many molecules of SO, as of 0, in the gas phase considered as a whole. Under these conditions, the decomposing sulfate gives off SO, which dissociates to SO, and 0, and all three species are distributed throughout the system by thermal diffusion. However, the sulfate will continue to dissociate until the equilibrium value of PSo3 is established on the hot zone. Thermal diffusion may distribute SO2 and O2 throughout the gas phase in any way so long as Eq. [2b] is satisfied in the hot zone; i.e. Pso2(Po2)1/2=K3pso3. The densities of liquid tin, lead, and Sn-Pb alloys have been measured over a range of temperature above the liquidus. In all cases, data can be adequately represented by an equation of the type p = a + bT. For pure tin, the values of a and b are, respectively, 7.139 and 7.125 x 10-4, and for pure lead, 11.060 and 12.220 x 10-4. At constant temperature, molar volumes in the Sn-Pb system vary linearly with composition. DURING the course of a long-term program at the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, Ottawa, Canada, the densities of liquid tin, lead, and Pb-Sn alloys were studied. The work reported herein draws on two sets of results independently achieved by Thresh, on the one hand, and by Crawley and White, on the other. EXPERIMENT The method and apparatus were originated by Thresh and have been described in detail in Mines Branch reports.172 In operation, the 14 cu cm graphite pycnometer is put in the furnace as shown in Fig. 1 after a machined charge has been placed inside the pycnometer and the lid screwed down. PLANS are now well advanced for the joint meeting of the Institute and over a dozen other engineering societies in Chicago during the week beginning June 26: Engineers' Week at A Century of Progress. All engineers planning to visit the Fair will find it to their advantage to be present at this time so far as the Chicago attractions are concerned, and Eastern members will also have the advantage of special transportation arrangements on June 24 and 25. The tentative program is given at the bottom of the next page. Monday morning, June 26, will be reserved for registration of members and guests and the Woman's Auxiliary at the Stevens Hotel, where special rooms will be provided. A luncheon will also be served there, and in the afternoon, a technical session on nonmetallics. Instead of having the big family dinner that evening at the Stevens, as at first proposed, the local committee has planned to have it at the Fair Grounds, where special facilities have been arranged. A meeting of the Board of Directors and a few invited guests will precede the dinner. All members and guests are likely to be interested in visiting the Museum of Science and Industry, so that will be the sole event on the program for Tuesday morning, June 27. The big attraction there at present is the model coal mine, the first operative coal mine ever built for exhibit purposes. It is based on the Deutsches Museum mine at Munich, but goes far beyond that in realism, and takes the visitor on an extended tour underground. It shows him in half an hour more types of modern mining machinery and coal geology than he would be likely to see in a week's underground study in the coal fields. The Institute members will be the first group to go through this mine.

Since its introduction to the petroleum industry in 1949 by Clark,1 hydraulic fracturing or "hydrafracing" has developed into a widely respected and useful technique for increasing production from petroleum reservoirs. Even then, Clark described production increases of from 6 to 100 barrels of oil per day (bopd). Since that time, others have described treatments in which production increased from 12 to 456 bopd, from only a show to 40 bopd;2 from 48 to 219 bopd; 3 from 500 to 1400 bopd and from a show to 192 bopd.4 Although representative of only a few of many successful hydraulic fracturing operational6 these increases in production attest to the past and potential value of the hydrafracing technique to the petroleum industry. The technique has received a considerable amount of theoretical and experimental attention.1, 5-20 Unfortunately, however, the degree of general understanding of the mechanics of hydraulic fracturing is still inadequate to solve many recurring problems. The practicing engineer is plagued with difficulties in predicting such factors as: (1) the required pressure and viscosity of the fracturing fluid to not only induce the fracture but to control the extent of its growth, (2) the strength characteristics and amount of proppant to include in the fluid so that the fracture is held open once the fluid pressure is decreased, and (3) the volume of the reservoir influenced by the induced fractures and the resulting increase in production. A major cause of these difficulties is the uncertainty associated with determining the orientation of the hydraulically induced fractures. One's natural conclusion in considering the problem is that the orientation of the fracture would depend on several variables, as, for example, the relationship between the viscosity and injection rate of the fluid and the

PREVIOUS to the war, this country depended on Europe for its supply of a number of alloys of great importance in the manufacture of electrical apparatus and equipment. When this source was cut off shortly after the beginning of hostilities and the small stocks in the United States were exhausted, either inferior substitutes had to be used or the manufacture of the apparatus suspended. Since electrical equipment was of primary importance in the prosecution of the war, the substitutes had to be used until the composition and processes of manufacture of the alloys could be determined. Included among these alloys was one generally known as manganin, which is composed chiefly of copper and manganese and which, beside having a low-temperature coefficient of resistance, has a low thermal electromotive force against copper. These qualities make it valuable for the manufacture of electrical instruments and machines in which it is used in the shape of wire, rod, and strip. As a result of these circumstances, an investigation was started to deter mine how manganin could be made on a commercial basis so that a product of uniform quality and the necessary electrical characteristics could be produced. The object was to procure an alloy with temperature coefficient of resistance not greater than T 1 X 10-5 per ° C. and a thermal e.m.f. against copper no greater than that of the imported material. It is characteristic of manganin that the temperature-resistance curve is not a straight line but has a peak, which varies in position with different samples; it is most desirable, however, to have it at a temperature of 25° C. if possible. The coefficients of manganin from all records available ranged from a large negative to a large positive value. The composition as reported by different authorities is given in Table 1. Prof. Matthew A. Hunter, of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, made up a number of small melts of manganin in a graphite crucible and the one that he reported as having the best coefficient gave the following analysis: Copper, 83.6 per cent.; nickel 2.5 per cent.; manganese,-13.6 per cent.; iron, 0.3 per cent. An analysis of a sample of German manganin gave the following: Copper, 82.6 per cent.; nickel, 3.8 per cent.; manganese, 12.8 per cent.; iron 0.7 per cent.

In the Journal of the Iron and Steel Institute for 1881 (vol. ii., page 379), will be found an article upon this subject. The analyses there reported mere of samples taken from an ingot made especially rich in impurities and then cast in a sand-mould in order to give the elements a better chance to redistribute themselves, on account of the steel solidifying more slowly than when cast in an iron mould. Wishing to ascertain how much, if any, segregation takes place when the steel is cast in the ordinary way, I placed the subject in the hands of Mr. W. J. Olcott, a graduate of the Michigan University, who has carefully collected and analyzed samples taken from different parts of ingots and billets. In this undertaking he found himself somewhat embarrassed on account of being distant from steel-works, and therefore unable to supervise the selection of samples. He found, however, a competent and willing aid in the person of E. F. Wood, M.E., chemist of the Pittsburgh Bessemer Steel Company, Limited, who has spared no pains in collecting the desired samples and furnishing drawings and descriptions of the ingots from which the samples were taken. The following are the results obtained: Ingot No. 1. This ingot was about 5 feet long and 13 X 131/4 inches at the point of fracture, which was 2 feet from the bottom. The samples

A new method for obtaining equilibrium vaporization ratios (K-values) for reservoir fluids has been developed and tested. By application of the method, complex experimental measurements of liquid and vapor phase compositions are eliminated. This simplified technique reduces the cost of experimental equilibrium-ratio data for reservoir studies of condensates and volatile crude-oil systems. The method is designed for systems of constant composition and, therefore, is best suited for depletion studies where compositional changes at high pressures are minor. The basic data required, in addition to the composition of the initial reservoir fluid, are the relative vapor-liquid volumes and densities at reservoir temperature and variom reservoir pressures. Tests demonstrated that the method predicts equilibrium ratios accurately for condensates. A single test on a crude oil was not conclusive; further testing will be necessary before the accuracy of the method can be determined for crude-oil systems. In addition to determining equilibrium ratios, the calculation method provides information on the physical properties of the "plus" component in the vapor and liquid phases. The "plus" component is that mixture of components heavier than the least volatile fraction analyzed. This information is useful in studies of both natural depletion and cycling operations for condensate reservoirs where the heptanes-plus component in the gas phase is produced from the reservoir. INTRODUCTION As more volatile oil and condensate reservoirs are found, the use of phase behavior techniques to predict their performance is increasing in importance. These techniques have long been used for condensate fields and have more recently been applied to crude-oil fields containing oils of medium-to-high volatility. In these phase behavior methods, equilibrium ratios (K-values) are used to predict compositional changes in the reservoir fluids—thereby accounting for the recoverable oil that exists in the gas phase. The reliability of the predictions depends to a large extent on the equilibrium ratios used. These values must be obtained for each component for the entire pressure range being investigated. Unfortunately, because of the complex nature of hydrocarbon mixtures, accurate K-values are hard to obtain. The equilibrium ratios for a particular component will vary not only with the temperature and pressure, but also with over-all composition of the system. The importance of composition is quite critical at elevated pressures, but becomes negligible at pressures below about 300 psia. Therefore, because most phase behavior problems involve the high-pressure region, each fluid system becomes a special case. Experimental programs to determine characteristic K-values are quite difficult and time-consuming. Thus, it is often necessary to resort to approximations of the K-value data. Charts giving K-values for various mixtures and classes of mixtures are available in the literature. However, there are two major difficulties in using them: (1) the K-values of the "plus" component (that mixture of components heavier than the last one analyzed) must be obtained by extrapolation from the K-values of the other components; and (2) the K-values obtained must finally be adjusted by trial and error to agree with observed volumetric data. To eliminate these difficulties, a new method of determining equilibrium ratios was developed. Briefly, after the composition of the system as a whole has been analyzed, the method uses empirical correlations and the gross fluid properties of the system (relative vapor-liquid volumes and densities) to calculate K-values. Because the calculative procedure is long, it is best solved on a digital computer. About one hour of machine time on an IBM 650 computer is required to develop a K-chart for the fluid being examined. DEVELOPMENT OF THE METHOD OF OBTAINING K-VALUES Equilibrium ratios are defined as the ratio of the mole fraction of a component in the vapor phase to its mole fraction in the liquid phase. This statement is expressed in Eq. 1. A typical plot of equilibrium ratios for a particular system is shown in Fig. 1. It should be noted that, at pressures near the saturation pressure, the K-values appear to converge to a common point. This apparent convergence point is called the convergence pressure and is a characteristic of the system involved. Various empirical correlations of K-values have been noted. A high-purity copper-zirconium alloy system was imesti-gated. The zirconium content of the alloys studied varied from 0.003 to 0.23 pet. The solid solubility of zirconium in copper and some physical and mechanical properties of the alloys have been determined. By proper heat treatment, Cu-Zr alloy can develop a high electrical conductivity and resistance to softening at temperatures up to 500°C (930°F). This combination of desirable properties makes this alloy superior, to other com-merzcrrl copper base alloys for- use in the electrical conductor field. DEMAND for high conductivity copper alloys that retain their mechanical properties at elevated temperatures is growing rapidly. At present, copper-base alloys such as copper-silver and copper-chromium are used where these characteristics are required. As an example, commutators in electric motors are often made of these alloys. However, the life at elevated temperature of commutators made of copper-silver alloys is much shorter than the life of the same part made of copper-chromium and copper-zirconium alloys. Copper-silver alloys are subject to creep and subsequent failure when the service temperature exceeds several hundred degrees centigrade. Use of copper-chromium alloys has been known for the past several years, but little information is available in the literature concerning the properties of alloys in the copper-zirconium alloy system. Some work had been directed toward determining the solubility of zirconium in copper as well as determining properties of the Cu-Zr alloys. These investigations have revealed the superior high-temperature and electrical conductivity properties of copper-zirconium alloys over copper-chromium alloys. The United States Metals Refining Co., Carteret, N. J. has recently produced OFHC R copper-zirconium alloys for experimentation and evaluation. Because OFHC R copper contains no appreciable oxygen, no harmful oxides are formed and the full benefit of Zr as an alloying addition is obtained. This paper describes the results of this work. It contains room-temperature and some high-temperature data which have been obtained after various processing techniaues. Actual elevated temperature properties are being determined and will be reported in a separate paper. Preliminary results obtained at elevated temperatures suggest that the Cu-Zr alloy is superior to other high conductivity copper-base alloys. WORK PROCEDURE The high-purity oxygen free (OFHC R) copper-zirconium alloys with zirconium content ranging from 0.003 to 0.23 pct were cast into 4-by 4-in. wirebars by both continuous casting and conventional casting methods. Zr was added in the form of a master alloy containing 30 pct Zr and 70 pct Cu. Castings were analyzed for zirconium and nine bars containing various amounts of zirconium were selected for this study. The results of analyses and the sample numbers are given in Table I. Typical analyses of OFHC R copper are also shown. The following properties were studied: A) Solid solubility of zirconium in copper. B) Effect of zirconium on properties of copper. C) Effect of combined working and heat treating on properties of Cu-Zr alloys. The solid solubility of zirconium in copper was determined by metallographic techniques. Specimens for this phase of the investigation were hot rolled at 900oC (1650oF) to 0.250-in. rod. The rolled rods were cut into 2/3-in. long specimens and solution annealed at 950 °C (1740°F), 980°C (1795 °F). and 1020 °C (1870 °F) for 6 hr and quenched in water. In order to find the solid solubility limits at lower temperatures, the homogenized specimens were reheated at various temperatures for 1 hr and quenched. The physical and mechanical properties were determined on 0.250 in. rod, 0.132- and 0.081-in. wires. The wires were cold drawn from the 0.250-in. rods after they were solution annealed at 980 °C (1795°F) and quenched in cold water. * The greatest and richest iron ore body in the world was discovered by U. S. Steel in Venezuela in April 1947, and is disclosed for the first time in this issue (p. 178), One solid mountain of ore, Cerro Bolivar, will furnish more tonnage than the famous Hull Rust pit at Superior has, or can produce. Total resources are on the order of 2 billion tons plus. Big Steel is now moving with great speed on construction to bring out this ore, and 10 million tons are scheduled for shipment into Baltimore and Birmingham by late 1952. This ore will arrive at, Pittsburgh at a price lower than present natural ores from Superior. The Venezuelan properties will be completely mechanized. •U. S. Steel and independent companies are embarking on a taconite beneficiation program of tremendous proportions, which must be speeded to completion in the 1950's (see p. 185). By 1960 over $l.2 billion dollars will be spent on Venezuela, taconite, and Labrador to solve the United States iron ore crisis. In addition, U. S. Steel will spend another $300 million plus for a new steel mill at Trenton, N. J., before 1955. •The Deister Concentrator Co. gave $500 to the 1950 Coal Division Scholarship Fund. •Howard N. Eavenson, in analyzing the bituminous coal situation (see p. 193), suggests that anti-trust laws be extended to labor unions, disinterested trustees to administer pension funds, begin pension funds now and stop the collection of all "check-offs" for union dues or funds. •Minerals and metals worth 13.9 million dollars were produced in the United States in 1949, Secretary of the Interior Oscar L. Chapman announced. Although this value was 11 pct less than in 1948, it was the second greatest in history. Nonmetallics was the only major group that in 1949 equaled the 1948 production high. Mineral fuels decreased 12 pct and metals 15 pct. • Prospects for making gas from coal are seen to be unattractive by the Pittsburgh Consolidated Coal Co. because the success of operation depends on price and supply of coal which presently are not attractive. The company has shut down its gasification plant at Library, Pa. * Economic prospects for the immediate future in the United States are good and business probably will continue at its present high levels throughout at least the early part of 1950, Secretary of Commerce Charles Sawyer said in his year-end report to the White House based on his personal survey of business conditions. •A 467-ft well 34 miles north of Rock Springs, Southwestern Wyoming, is said to be flowing a 5 pct solution of nearly pure trona (sodium carbonate) at the rate of 10,000 barrels a day. Trona, natural soda ash, is mined for the chemical trade at Searles Lake, Calif., and from about 1500 ft underground near Green River, Wyo., and has been in short supply. •The AEC is "very much interested" in a discovery of radioactive material that has been made in Baraga County bordering Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, reported F. G. Pardee, Michigan State mining engineer. The material has been identified as uranium oxide in the form of pitchblende or uraninite. The discovery, made by a geologist of the Jones & Laughlin Ore Co., is the only instance in which the commission has certified samples of Michigan rock.

A substantial reduction in the 300°F ductile-to-brittle transition temperature for unalloyed chromium was achieved in alloys from systems which resemble the Cr-Re system. These alloy systems include Cr-Ru, Cr-Co, and Cr-Fe. Transition temperatures ranged from -300° F for Cr-35 at. pct Re to -75°F for 0-50 at. pct Fe. The ductile alloys have high grain gvowth rates at elevated temperatures. Also, Cr-24 at. pct Ru exhibited enhanced tensile ductility at elevated temperatures, characteristic of superplas-ticity. It is concluded that phase relations play an importarlt role in the rhenium ductilizing effect. The ductile alloys have compositions near the solubility limit in systems with a high terminal solubility and which contain an intermediate o phase. The importance of enhanced high-temperature ductility to the rhenium ductilizing effect is not well understood although both may have common basic features. CHROMIUM alloys are currently being investigated for advanced air-breathing engine applications, primarily as turbine buckets and/or stator vanes. The inherent advantages of chromium as a high-temperature structural material are well-known1 and include its high melting point relative to superalloys, moderately high modulus of elasticity, low density, good thermal shock resistance, and superior oxidation resistance as compared to the other refractory metals. Additionally, it is capable of being strengthened by conventional alloying techniques. The major disadvantage of chromium is its poor ductility at ambient temperatures, a problem which it shares with the other two Group VI-A metals, molybdenum and tungsten. For chromium, the problem is further amplified by its susceptibility to nitrogen em-brittlement during high-temperature air exposure. In cases of severe nitrogen embrittlement, the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature might exceed the steady-state operating temperature of the component. The low ductility of chromium would make stator vanes and turbine buckets prone to foreign object damage. The present work was directed towards improvement of the ductility of chromium through alloying, with the anticipation that any improvements so obtained might be additive to strengthening improvements achieved through different types of alloying. The alloying additions for ductility were selected on the basis of the similarity of their phase relations with chromium to that of Cr-Re. The reduction in the ductile-to-brittle transition temperatures of the Group VI-A metals as a result of alloying with 25 to 35 pct Re is well established.a4 the temperature range -300" to 750° F. This phenomenon is commonly referred to as the &apos;<rhenium ductilizing effect"; this term is also used to describe systems in which the ductilizing element is not rhenium. Other alloy systems which have recently been shown to exhibit the rhenium ductilizing effect include Cr-Co and c-Ru.= In order to explore the generality of this effect, alloys were selected from systems having phase relations similar to that of Cr-Re, primarily a high solubility in chromium and an intermediate o phase. The following compositions were prepared: Cr-35 and -40Re; Cr-10, -15, -18, -21, -24, and -27 pct Ru; Cr-25 and -30 pct Co; Cr-30, -40, and -50 pct Fe; Cr-45, -55, and -65 pct Mn. Seven other systems were also studied which partially resemble Cr-Re. These systems have extensive chromium solid solutions or a complex intermediate phase, not necessarily o. The compositions evaluated include the following: Cr-20 pct Ti; Cr-15, -30, and -45 pct V; Cr-2.5 pct Cb; Cr-2.5 pct Ta; Cr-20 pct Ni; Cr-6, -9, -12, and -15 pct 0s; Cr-10 pct Ir. The compositions of alloys in these systems were chosen near the solubility limit for the chromium-base solid solutions, since in the Group VI-A Re systems, the saturated alloys are the most ductile. These alloys were evaluated on the basis of hardness, fabricability, and ductile-to-brittle transition temperatures. In addition to the studies of alloying effects on ductility, an exploratory investigation was conducted on mechanical properties at high temperatures in Cr-Ru alloys EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE High-purity chromium prepared by the iodide deposition process was employed for all studies. An analysis of this chromium is given in Table I. Alloying elements were obtained in the following forms: Commercially pure powder — iridium, osmium, rhenium, and ruthenium. Arc-melted ingot — titanium and vanadium. Electrolytic flake — iron, manganese, and nickel. Sheet rolled from electron-bearn-melted ingot — columbium and tantalum. Electron-beam-melted ingot — cobalt. Sheet rolled from arc-melted ingot — rhenium. All alloys were initially consolidated by triple arc melting into 60-g button ingots on a water-cooled hearth using a nonconsumable tungsten electrode. The melting atmosphere was Ti-gettered Ar at a pressure of 20 torr. The ingots were drop cast into rectangular slabs and fabricated by heating at 1470" to 2800° F in argon followed by rolling in air. Bend specimens measuring 0.3 by 0.9 in. were cut from the 0.035-in. sheet parallel to the rolling direction. The specimens were annealed for 1 hr in argon, furnace cooled or water quenched, and electropolished prior to testing. The effects of the growth precipitates on the su-perconduching properties of an Al- 15 al. pel Zu alloy have been studied using magneization, transition lem-perature, and residual resistivity measurements. Aging at 230C for 1/2 to 11 he produces an increase in Hfp, Ike field of first penetration, and tut increase in trapped flux. The upper critical field, Hc2 remains constant for such aging tunes. Aging at 200°C produces a decrease in Hfp and an increase in trapped flux. The transition temperature remains constant at Tc - 1.227° ± 0.02°K for aging at 220°C for tims of from 1/2 to 10 hr, and for aging at 200°C it remains constant at Tc. = 1.18° i 0.02°K for times from 1/2 hv to 26 hr. The observed behavior indicates that the superconducting matrix when aged at 220°C behaves tike a type U su-perconducior, but when aged at 200°C behares like a type I superconductor. The magnetization changes after aging can be attributed to the growth and clutnge in distribution of the precipitate in a matrix of fixed composition. IT has been realized for some time that the superconducting properties of alloys are highly structure-sensitive. This is evident in the work of Mould and Mapother1 who examined the properties of an aluminum alloy. Precipitation effects have also been briefly mentioned in other studies.2-4 Bonnin and coworkers5 have observed a sharp inc rease in trapped flux in an A1-Mg alloy when the residual resistivity reaches a value that indicates it is a type II superconductor. Recently Blanc, Goodman, and Nemoz5p have reported on precipitation effects in A1-Ag alloys. Detailed studies of precipitation in Pb-Sn and Pb-Cd alloys made by Livingston6 serve to show that the upper critical fields are enhanced by quenched-in solute. Furthermore. at various stages in the precipitation process? the upper critical field is determined largely by the remanent solute. The observed magnetic hysteresis and trapped flux in such alloys result from the interaction between precipitate and the flux filaments in the mixed state. The flux trapping appears to depend largely on the precipitate distribution and is greater if the superconductor is type II than if it is type I. To examine the effect of precipitation in another alloy system, particularly one in which the composition of the superconducting phase does not change significantly during the course of precipitation, the Al-Zn system seems interesting, especially in view of the transition temperature and resistivity studies of Chiou and seraphim.&apos; Furthermore, the recent detailed electron-microscope studies of an Al-Zn alloy by Richards and Garwood8 provide a guide for relating superconducting properties to changes in structure. For these reasons, magnetization, transition temperature, and residual resistivity measurements for varying times of heat treatment at two temperatures were made with a -15 at. pct Al-Zn alloy. The results are reported in this paper. I) EXPERIMENTAL The alloy used was prepared by Cominco Products Inc. from 99.9999 A1 and 99.999 Zn. It was chill-cast, swaged, and drawn to 0.125-in.-diam rod. The analyzed composition was 15.6 at. pct Zn (31.1 wt pct). A jeweler&apos;s saw was used to cut the 0.125-in.-diam rod into the 0.875-in. lengths needed for magnetization measurements. The ends of the cylinders were slightly beveled to remove the sharp edges. A portion of the original 0.125-in.-diam rod was drawn into 0.010-in.-diam wire and used for transition temperature measurements. Specimens were suspended from wires within a vertical furnace during heat treatment. All were homogenized at 500°C for a minimum of 3 days and subsequently solutionized for times in excess of 6 hr. The solutionizing temperature was held constant to +3°C. Individual specimens were homogenized, quenched, and aged several times and no effects indicating loss of zinc were noted. The suspended specimens were quenched by cutting the wires and allowing the specimens to fall into a silicone oil bath held at the aging temperature. They were then isothermally transforked by aging in the same bath used for quenching. After aging for the required time (approximately 10 min aging was necessary before the upper critical field reached a fixed value), they were briefly (1 to 2 sec) dipped into an acetone bath at room temperature to remove adherent oil and then immediately transferred to liquid nitrogen where they remained until inserted into the helium bath (usually within an hour). The temperature of the aging bath was held constant to +3°C for longer aging times. The cryostat used for the measurement of superconducting properties consisted of outer and inner dewars for liquid nitrogen and liquid helium, Stokes 6-in. booster diffusion pump and Stokes Model 212 mechanical pump, temperature controller to measure and control the temperature of the helium bath, and a superconducting solenoid with inserted search coils to provide the magnetic field and measure the magnetic moment of the specimens. A schematic diagram of the cryostat is shown in Fig. 1. An ultimate temperature of 0.85°K was reached with this apparatus. This paper presents the results of applying the Buckley-Leverett&apos; displacement theory to petroleum reservoirs consisting of a finite number of layers. The layers are assumed to communicate only in the wellbores, and the reservoir may be represented as a linear system. Most previous investigations of this nature were limited by assumptions and by inconsistent calculation techniques. This study improves on previous work by applying the Buckley-Lev-erett displacement theory to a noncommunicating layered system where permeability, porosity, initial saturation, residual saturation and relative permeability vary from layer to layer in a logical and consistent manner. Gravity and capillary-pressure effects are neglected. A modification of the Higgins-Leighton calculation method was used in this study. Waterflood predictions were made with all properties varying, and then with only permeability varying using several inability ratios. These results were compared with the Stiles and Dykstra-Parsons predictions. It is shown that the latter methods generally give poor values for the breakthrough recovery and pessimistic predictions for the performance after breakthrough. Similar results were obtained for a gas-displacement case. lNTRODUCTION Field experience with immiscible displacement usually shows constant producing conditions until breakthrough of the displacing fluid. Then oil production continues at increasing displacing-to-displaced fluid ratios until the economic limit is reached. Three different ideal mechanisms are known that will produce this behavior: (1) relative permeability effects as described by Buckley-Leverett frontal advance theory,&apos; (2) vertical stratification as considered by Stiles,2 Dykstra and Parsons5 and others and (3) different path lengths involved in areal (two-dimensional) flow between wells as described by Dyes et al.4 Without question, a combination of these factors modified by formation heterogeneity and other known and unknown factors actually does control the behavior of real systems. This paper presents results of an investigation of certain factors that should affect performance but which have received little attention to date. In 1944, Law5 demonstrated that porosity and perme- ability are often found to have normal and logarithmic-normal distributions, respectively. throughout cored intervals in natural formations. This led to the concept of the noncommunicating, multilayered reservoir model for immiscible displacement. This model assumes that the reservoir is composed of a number of layers that communicate only at the wellbores. Each layer is individually homogeneous, but may be different from every other layer. Stiles&apos; presented one of the earliest applications of this model to waterflood performance. In addition, Stiles assumed that the initial saturations and relative permeabilities were the same for each layer, porosity was the same. displacement was piston-like, fluids were incompressible and injection into each layer was proportional to that layer&apos;s permeability capacity (permeability-thickness product). The last assumption would be true if the mobility ratio for the displacement were unity.21 Dykstra and Parsons" used the same model as Stiles, but rigorously included mobility ratios other than unity for piston-like displacement. Dykstra and Parsons used their general result to produce charts for log-normal permeability distributions between layers. Similarly, Muskat6 Pub1ished analytical solutions for linear and exponential permeability distributions. In 1959, Roberts&apos; described a scheme for calculating water-drive performance for the noncommunicating, layered reservoir model which considered two-phase flow in the displaced region. Roberts used the same model and assumed that the injection rate into a layer was proportional to that layer&apos;s permeability capacity, but that flood front locations could be evaluated from the Dykstra-Parsons results. These assumptions are inconsistent, and a material balance cannot be maintained except for a mobility ratio of unity. At the same time, Kufus and Lynch8 coupled Buckley-Leverett displacement theory with the layered model to provide an improvement of the Dykstra-Parsons method that was consistent. In 1960, Higgins and Leighton9 resented a numerical method for calculating waterflood performance also considering two-phase flow in the displaced region. The result was used to investigate variation in absolute permeability and oil viscosity. An excellent, detailed history of using the noncomrnunicating, layered reservoir model was presented by Nielsen.&apos;" The preceding techniques (and many related ones) were similar in that differences in initial saturations, residual saturations and relative permeabilities from layer to layer were neglected. The first operating unit of the ring or annular shaft kiln as developed by Mr. Karl Beckenbach of West Germany was rated 185 tpd and was installed in 1962. Today, there are approximately 84 units in operation in Western Europe and Japan. Twenty-one additional units are under construction or on order. Sizes range from approximately 100-330 tpd, however, units of over 500 tons are in the design stage. The ring shaft kiln is a single vertical cylinder to which are attached the required service platforms, combustion chambers, injectors and distribution piping (Fig. 1). Auxiliaries such as recuperator, exhaust fan and dust collector are mounted on the appropriate service platform. The charging pan, feed conveyor, etc., are mounted at the kiln top and at the bottom of the kiln is the silo with a vibrator type discharger. Mounted separately is the required blower for injector air and fan for internal cooling.

FLOTATION requires the existence of a definite contact angle. This contact angle, the surface tension of the solution, and adsorption at the solid- fluid interface are quantitatively related. Adsorption of dodecylammonium acetate on hematite was measured for a wide range of concentrations of reagent in solution. Similar measurements for quartz have already been made.1 Contact angle measurements were then made on polished surfaces of hematite and of quartz immersed in aqueous dodecylammonium acetate solutions, and a functional relationship was sought between adsorption density at the mineral-solution interface and the contact angle. Finally, the surface tension of the aqueous amine acetate solutions was measured. These data were combined to give an evaluation of the work of adhesion for the three-phase system.

1. Healthy and active Local Section organizations are vital factors in promoting the vigor and growth of the Institute. 2. Activity on the part of Local Sections should be recognized and stimulated by appropriation of funds from the Institute&apos;s treasury; and these appropriations should be as large as is consistent with the relative needs for other activities. 3. As between different Sections, the amount of such appropriations should be based primarily on the extent of activities as reflected in the number and character of meetings held and the attendance of the members at such meetings. 4. In making a request for funds for any year, the officers of a Local Section should submit a report on the printed form approved by the Directors at their meeting on November 19, 1937. 5. A standing Committee on Local Section Appropriations, consisting of one past Chairman of a Local Section, one member of the Institute&apos;s Executive Committee, and one member of the Finance Committee, shall be appointed by the President and shall pass upon requests for appropriations and authorize payments within bounds of the budget. The committee will be guided by the principles herein outlined, always having in mind the vital importance of healthy, active Sections to the welfare of the Institute as a whole. 6: According to Article XI, Section 2 of the Bylaws, requests for appropriations shall be signed by the Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer of the Section. 7. Requests for appropriations must be in the hands of the Secretary of the Institute by February 15 of the year for which they are desired.

THE objects of this paper are: 1. To give cost data on drilling obtained at the North Star mine in California; 2. To describe the methods of testing drills employed there, giving the results of shop tests, and the correlated data obtained underground; 3. To demonstrate that these tests form a satisfactory basis upon which to judge rock drills. The rock at this mine is either close-grained diabase in the upper levels, or tough grano-diorite in the lower levels. The vein, which has an average dip of 23°, consists of about 5 ft. of "formation" lying between walls of unaltered country rock. Of the 5 ft., solid quartz and stringers make up 18 in. of pay ore. The formation, which consists of but slightly altered country rock, is almost as hard as the unaltered walls. From 4 to 42 ft. is sent to the mill. One-third of the holes are drilled in the quartz; two-thirds in the formation. The holes are about 42 ft. deep and break on the average of 1.15 tons per hole. The average number of holes per stope drill shift is at present 5.65. The number of drill shifts throughout the mine in 1913, was 18,679, and the cost of labor for drilling, power, supplies, upkeep of machines and air lines, tool sharpening, and distribution, amounted to 33 per cent. of total mining expense. To do this work there are in commission 43 No. 12A, three No. 17V and eight No. 16V Waugh stopers, three Jackhamers, two Waugh pluggers, and 17 No. 8 ,and two No. 7 water Leyners. For the past three years a record has been kept of the repairs on each machine and number of shifts operated by it. The figures given in Tables I and II for the cost of repairs per drill shift have been taken from this record. The underground air pressure is about 90 lb. The air consumption per drill shift was measured by, aerometers. The leakage of pipe lines between compressor and meter is not included. From the number of pieces of steel sharpened for each type of drill during the year the average used per drill shift has been ascertained. For other supplies the figures given represent a year&apos;s average.

L. C. GRATON, professor of geology in Harvard University, addressed the New York Section on April 24 on-his impressions of the Rand. His beautifully clear and concise address was delivered without notes, so that what follows is merely a resume of the principal points made. The world is apparently coming to the end of ore discoveries easily made, yet we need metals at a steadily increasing rate. If surface discoveries are to decline, then we must find other ores or use less metals. The probable chances of finding ore are greater in the centers of big production than in new districts, as proved statistically. It is unsafe to say that a field is worked out. Therefore, deep mining holds possibilities and is an interesting study that will progressively gain in importance. The origin of the gold in the banket of the Rand has been a geologic football for a long time. Of the various theories, two have survived: 1. Infiltration into permeable conglomerate beds from deep-seated sources; 2. the placer hypothesis, which holds that gravel beds originally had the gold in them. At present, the second theory is accepted by the majority, as a result of the studies by the Union Geological Survey and by E: F. Mellor which were published about fifteen years ago.

THE data relative to the effect of metal depth on slag volume was obtained from the operation on two acid electric furnaces in which heats of various sizes were produced. The furnaces used were of 3 and 5-ton rated capacity; the heats investigated ranged from 6 to 8 tons. Heats of 7 and 8 tons were made in the larger furnace; heats of 6 tons in the smaller one. Bath depths and diameters were measured on the furnaces when cold and each is accurate to one inch. Both the metal charge and the slag were weighed on a track scale accurate to ± 25 lb. All other components added to the furnace were weighed on a wheelbarrow scale accurate to ±5 lb.

During the middle 1880&apos;s, shortly after the discovery of silver-lead ores in the Coeur d&apos;Alene district of northern Idaho, it became apparent that concentration of the ores would be necessary to obtain a profitable product. Too much siliceous material was present for direct smelting, and the majority of the ores found at depth were too low in metallic content for economic smelting processes at the time. As the ores occurred in quartzite shear zones with siderite and quartz gangue, a large quantity of waste material was present in all the mines. As the galena was not finely disseminated, this made possible relatively good extraction of the argentiferous galena by coarse concentration. The first concentrators consisted mainly of coarse crushing, screening and jigging, principally by Harz jigs, the slimes being treated on buddles. Later Wilfley tables took the place of sand jigs and vanners superseded the buddles. Because of the marketing conditions, no attempt was made until 1900 to effect a recovery on the zinc minerals present, which were found associated in varying amounts with the galena. All through this period, the greater part of the production was obtained from mines containing ore assaying high in lead and low in zinc. Parts of some ore bodies would be reversed in this respect, so that ores high in zinc were left intact. During the decade after 1910, several important mines, The Success and The Interstate Callahan, containing ores high in zinc, were put into operation and were a material aid in the needed zinc production during World War I. Gravity concentration by jigs and tables was used during this period, with bulk flotation increasing in popularity for the treatment of the fine material that had already been treated by ordinary slime concentrating machinery. No extra fine grinding for flotation concentration was thought profitable at the time. Tailings Discharged into Streams From the start of mining and milling operations in this district until 1904, no attempt was made by the various mills in the upper district to impound or stack their tailings. They discharged them directly into the adjacent creeks or streams, to be carried away by high water. The Bunker Hill and Sullivan and the Last Chance mines, both in the relatively flat valley of the district, stacked huge piles of the coarse jig tailings on the near-by river bottom. Rain and snowfall are heavy in the Coeur d&apos;Alene district, as it is on the heavily timbered Pacific slope of the Bitter Root Mountains. A heavy runoff occurs every spring and there is an occasional flood of disastrous proportions when warm "Chinook" winds accompanied by rain
