A layer of brass was formed on 0 brass using a vapor-solid reaction technique. The variation in composition with distance within the phase layer and across the a -ß interface was determined by an electron probe. The diffusivities were calculated as a function of concentration; the diffusion coefficient in brass was found to change by a factor of twenty-five over a compositional range of 8 at. pct. An explanation is proposed to account for the large change in the diffusivity, based on possible stresses in the diffusion zone; it is suggested that the concentration dependence of the thermodynamic factor might decrease the activation energy with increasing zinc content. ALTHOUGH the body of data on diffusion coefficients (D- values) in terminal solid solutions and in isomorphous systems is quite large, there is but little quantitative information for intermediate alloy phases. This paper recounts measurements of D-values for the ? phase in the Cu-Zn system. The experimental method employed consists in the forming of alloy layers and determining and analyzing the concentration-distance (c-x) curve. The experimental method employed could have been applied to several systems; the Cu-Zn system was chosen because the D-values in the a and ß phases are well known, and can thus be used for purposes of comparison. The rates of growth, of intermediate alloy layers are known for a number of systems. In nearly all cases the thickness varies parabolically with time, as to be expected if the rate of growth is controlled by the D-values. In a few cases, nonparabolic behavior has been noted.1 Nonparabolic growth may be the result of a) a variation of the composition at the phase interface with time, b) interface-controlled kinetics, c) short diffusion times coupled with long vacancy lifetimes (in vacancy diffusion),2 and d) crystal reorientation during diffusion in anisotropic systems.3 In the Al-Ni system4 and in the Al-u5 system parabolic growth kinetics are slowly approached after an initial transient period. In general those phases stable at a given temperature in a system A-B appear as separate phase layers when A and B are put in contact and given a diffusion he at-treatment. In most cases the compositions at the interface of adjacent phase layers are those read from the phase diagrams for the termini of the respective phases. This discontinuity in concentration is taken as independent of time, and the growth of one phase at the expense of another is assumed to be independent of interface kinetics, i.e., the rate of interface movement is controlled by volume diffusion in the phases concerned. wagner6 has given many solutions for multi-phase diffusion processes, assuming that the chemical diffusion coefficient, D, is independent of concentration, as have others. Jost7 has pointed out that the familiar Boltzmann-Matano solution is as valid for a (c-x) curve exhibiting concentration discontinuities at phase boundaries as for the usual single-phase case. Heumann and associates8,9 have applied this solution to the multi-phase case, but lacking concentration data within the several layers were forced to assume linear concentration gradients, thus calculating only average D-values. The purposes of the present study were: 1) to determine the dependence of D on concentration, 2) to calculate the intrinsic diffusion coefficients D?Cu and D?Zn, 3) to establish the time-law for the movement of the interface, 4) to determine the concentration limits at the ß-? interface, and, 5) to attempt to clarify the mechanism of diffusion. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The ? phase is exceedingly brittle; conventional solid couples and conventional sectioning methods were thus inapplicable. Vapor-solid couples were accordingly employed. Unfortunately the equilibrium vapor pressures of Zn for the ? phase are unknown; to escape this awkwardness, samples were enclosed in a capsule containing powder of an alloy of known composition, sufficiently large in quantity as to be effectively an infinite source, maintaining the concentration of Zn at the sample surface constant with time. The sources of Zn-vapor which can be employed in reaction with Cu, or a brass, or ß brass, to form a layer of ? brass satisfactorily wide in concentration range, are alloys of the phases ?, or ? + E or ? + d (depending on the temperature).

The progress of primary recrystallization has been studied in alloys of nickel with 0.01, 0.1, and 1.0 at. pct Ta. It can be shown that in one particular alloy containing 0.1 Ta and 0.02 02 a large grain structure (0.5 mm diameter) could he developed by primary recrystallization in thin sheetswhich were cold-worked to 97.5 pct reduction in thickness. Electron transmission microscopy demmstrates that this phenonmena was linked to the occurrence of fine precipitates at subboundaries. A discussion of how fine precipitates can exert under certain circumstances a rather distinct retarding effect on nucleation rate is included. IN a former investigation, the recrystallization and texture formation in a series of binary nickel alloys including pure nickel were studied.' Nickel alloys with some tantalum added displayed peculiarities during primary recrystallization which have been studied in more detail by the present investigation. The alloys were prepared by powder-metallurgy techniques similar to the previous investigations.' Pure metal powders were thoroughly mixed to obtain alloys with 0.01, 0.1, and 1.0 at. pct Ta, referred to as alloy A, B, or C, respectively. The metallic impurities were kept below 0.005 at. pct except iron and cobalt with slightly higher values, by using highly purified nickel and tantalum powders.' The mixtures were pressed into bars and sintered at a temperature of 1300°C. The sintering atmosphere was either high vacuum, dry hydrogen, or wet hydrogen. The sintered rectangular bars were rolled 60 pct to a thickness of 3 mm, then annealed under dry hydrogen at 1000°C and again cold-rolled to about 97.5 pct reduction of thickness. After this heavy deformation, the sheet thickness was 0.07 5 mm. In order to study primary recrystallization which occurred in measurable times between 400" and 600°C, samples of the rolled sheets were annealed in a salt bath at various temperatures for various times in order to study the progress of recrystallization by hardness measurements and microscopic examination. For optical observation, the samples were polished and etched in a solution of 65 cu cm HNO3, and 18 cu cm acetic acid in 20 to 100 cu cm H2O, depending of the particular sample and annealing treatment. For transmission electron microscopic observations, thin foils were prepared by the combined window and Bollmann techniques.273 The electrolyte consisted of 23 pct perchloric acid and 77 pct acetic acid held at 15°C. Polishing was performed at a current density of 0.4 amp per sq cm. The examination of the thin films was accomplished by a Siemens Elmiscope-type electron microscope operating with an accelerating voltage of 100 kv. RESULTS The progress of primary recrystallization was very accurately followed in these alloys in order to establish the time when recrystallization started and ended during an isothermal anneal. Table I gives some of the data obtained by these studies. The time for beginning is a mean value, where somewhat less than 5 pct of the matrix has recrys-tallized. The end of recrystallization is the time when at least 95 pct of the matrix has recrystal-lized. Listed are three different B alloys, with 0.1 Ta distinguished by different sintering atmospheres which influence the rate of primary recrystallization. By the above method, the state of the grain structure when primary recrystallization was completed, but grain coarsening had not started, could be clearly defined. The average grain diameter of the recrystallized matrix is also given in Table I. The grain size did not depend on the temperature of the isothermal anneal. The characteristics of some common size distribution equations are critically discussed. A generalized form of several well-known size distribution equations is obtained from a differential equation describing statistical distributions. The equation contains three parameters and can describe the major features of size distributions in the fine and the coarse size regions. A graphical method for its implementation is provided. The application of this and other equations to sets of data are compared both for the quality of fit and from a comminution kinetics viewpoint. If a narrow size range of a brittle material is broken sufficiently to obliterate the feed sizes, but not so severely that excessive secondary breakage occurs, a plot of cumulative fraction by weight undersize (Y) vs. sieve size (X) on a log log grid (sometimes called the Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann plot)1-3 gives a straight line of slope ~ 1 over much of its range. On closer inspection, deviations in the extreme coarse range covering perhaps 10 to 30% of the total sample may be apparent (frequently, a change in slope from ~ 1 to a value different from unity) together with over-all slight irregular departures from a smooth line. One model of breakage postulates that the same fracture pattern persists throughout all size ranges.4 The fracture pattern is characterized by the slope of the line on a log log grid. Accordingly, a distribution of sizes broken in the manner specified earlier is expected to produce a size distribution having the same slope as that of a broken narrow size range. Additionally, the slight irregularities mentioned above should even out in the summation process, giving a smooth straight line of slope ~1 on a log log plot. This idealized state of affairs does not, however, describe the distribution of a multi-event process such as that for a tumbling mill product. On the average, these curves (plotted again log log) tend to have a slope in the fine region different from and usually less than unity,5 while the coarse size region curves with increasing slope for cases of mild reduction, and with decreasing slope when moderate or severe size reduction has occurred. In addition, there are usually slight irregular deviations from a smooth curve. Most curves display two distinct regions — fine and coarse — and a few curves show one or more intermediate regions. Feed size studies6,7 show an effect which theory is required to explain. For the same material, mill loading and other operating conditions, and the same time of grinding, plotting the dimensionless ratios Y vs. X/(feed size) does not reduce the size distribution data to the same curve. Y vs. X does not correlate the coarse region, but it can provide a crude correlation of the fine region which improves as size diminishes and as grinding time increases. The size distribution in the coarse region is somewhat more dependent on the feed size than is the distribution in the fine region wherein the degree of dependence diminishes as time proceeds; the distribution of sizes in the fine region are determined largely by the nature of the material and the comminution conditions. A comprehensive model of comminution must recognize that several different patterns or modes of breakage can occur in a mill; 5,8,9 that there can be some selection in that some size ranges are broken more than others; and that, while some particles may be the product of a single fracture event, or may even remain unbroken, others result from multiple rebreak-age. Thus, breakage in a tumbling mill is more complex than the Schuhmann4 model admits in that several different types of comminution micro-events* occur rather than just one type, and these events, though different in size scale, are of the same overall pattern as that which is visualized by the model. The concept of an average comminution micro-event has, therefore, a mathematical rather than a physical connotation, at least for tumbling milling. Equations with which to describe particle size distributions have been sought for over half a century.10-13 No equation presently in general use was first derived from an analysis of the statistical mechanics of breakage; whatever theoretical basis the existing

It is twenty years since the writer made his first molybdenum steels and others were making them commercially five years earlier but the prevailing opinion seems to be that molybdenum steels are new; from time to time the daily press speaks of important discoveries in Europe and intimates that American steel makers have much to learn in regard to alloy steels. The earlier experiments were largely confined to the use of relatively high percentages of molybdenum in tool steels and permanent magnet steels. Recent developments deal with the types of alloy structural steels used for airplane, automobile, and other engineering requirements; in these, the molybdenum content is usually less than 1 per cent. The earlier types generally have been unsuccessful commercially, but the newer types of steels are becoming of increasing importance. The war showed our dependence on foreign sources for alloying metals; molybdenum alone is widely distributed in the United States and seemingly abundant. Many deposits are not now of commercial interest, owing to location and relatively small amount of ore available, but other deposits are being developed and a stable source of supply seems well assured. In tool and magnet steels, it was early found that 1 part of molybdenum was equivalent to from 2 to 2.5 parts of tungsten. The permanent magnet steels investigated by Madame Curie,' in 1898, contained from 3.36 to 4.05 per cent. molybdenum; in 1902, Dr. E. L. French and the writer thoroughly tested steels containing from 2.0 to 4.0 per cent. These steels gave satisfactory tests for permanence, but were low in residual density and much more sensitive to hardening than the corresponding tungsten products. We discontinued work with them, therefore, and have no advice that such steels have been used commercially here or abroad. Prior to the development of the Taylor-White process and the modern high-speed steels, air-hardening steels were in general use. These were

El Indio, eighty percent -owned by Compania Minera an Jose Inc., a subsidiary of St. Joe Minerals, and twenty percent-owned by private Chilean investors, will open their new flotation and Carbon -In -Pulp plant near La Serena, 480 km (300 miles) north of Santiago, Chile, in early 1981. The underground mine, at an altitude of 4,270 m (14,000 ft), will produce about 1,270 mt per day (1,400 st per day) of ore containing about 2. 2570 Cu, and gold and silver to the extent of 16 and 254 g per mt (0.47 and 7.4 oz per st) respectively. While construction of the plant was underway, development ore, containing some 1,400 kg (45,000 oz) of gold, was shipped to the United States for recovery in a copper smelter. At El Indio the underground ore is rail-hauled to the mill a short distance from the portal where it is crushed, ground, and floated to produce a copper concentrate containing both gold and silver. The crushing plant also crushes waste for use as mine backfill. Approximately 92% of the copper and 60% of the gold and silver are recovered in the flotation concentrate. Flotation tailings, at a grade of 19 g Au and 116 g Ag per mt (3.4 oz Au and 0.55 oz Ag per st), are cyanided for 72 hours in six Pachucas with auxiliary air lifts for pulp transfer. Lime, cyanide, lead nitrate, and a phosphate are also fed to the cyanidation Pachucas. After cyanidation, the pulp is treated in four air lift Carbon-In-Pulp tanks equipped with external vibrating screens for carbon advance. Loaded carbon is stripped in two pressure vessels in parallel. Pressure stripping must be used because of the high altitude. Stripped carbon is dewatered in a spiral classifier before being reactivated in a rotary kiln and returned to the C. I. P. circuit. Pregnant solution is then sent to four banks of four Zadra cells for gold and silver recovery on steel wool. Zadra cell cathodes.are washed with the slimes being captured in a plate and frame filter. The filter cake and the washed cathodes are then dried on an infrared dryer and smelted in two stages to bullion bars. Published reports indicate that the total investment for this unique operation was in the neighborhood of $80 million.

.Although oil Production in West Texas in 1939 reached the highest figure for any year since the inauguration of proration, drilling activity continued in the decline that had commerlced the previous year. Production totaled 79,469,341s bbl. of oil during 1939 as compared with 71,257,541s bbl. in 1938 and 75,743,000 in 1937. The number of wells completed in 1939 was 1850, compared with 2045 in 1938 and 2806 ill 1937. Several factors combined to cause the decrease in drilling activity, principally the contiriued increase in the length of time required to obtain a return of invcstment and the scarcity of important new discoveries during the past two years. Of the 1850 completions 1638 resulted in oil wells, 4 were gas wells, 168 were dry holes and 40 were abandoned locations; 1990 new locations were made during the year. The ratio of dry holes to producing wells completed was one dry hole to each 9.75 oil wells, compared with one dry hole to each 7.48 oil wells completed during 1938. This large decrease in dry holes was due to a marked decline in the number of wildcat wells drilled, there having been only 120 wildcat completions during 1939. In addition to the lessened exploration work, the deeline' in activity was largely accounted for by the slowing up of operations in the older pools of Ector, Howard and Winkler Counties. Ector County, which had led West Tcxas in 1938 with 622 new oil wells, furnished only 485 producers in 1939, but was still the leader for the West Texas district. The largest gain in activity was in Yoakum County, whew 350 oil wells were completed in the Denver-Wasson field against 152 during 1938. ALTHOUGH the metallurgical treatment for the Ophir Hill tailings was developed more than 20 years ago and in the interim a vast amount of experimental work was done with later-developed flotation rea-gents, it was found necessary to revert to the original oil reagents and their combina-tions with specific chemical reagents in order to obtain results of economic value. This is of especial interest because in present ore-treatment investigations later-developed flotation reagents are used almost exclusively and the coal-tar deriva-tives, except in certain patented reagents, are virtually neglected. These coal-tar oils and derivatives still have a definite field of application, especially in the treatment of some oxidized ores when modified sulphidi-zation is desirable. The Ophir Hill tailings deposit is in Ophir Canyon, Tooele County, Utah, about 55 miles southwest of Salt Lake City and 25 miles south of the Tooele smelter of the International Smelting and Refining Co. A road good for trucks leads directly from the Ophir mill to the smelter.

• Phelps-Dodge Corp. signed an agreement with the Defense Materials Procurement Agency to increase copper production from the east ore deposit of the company's Copper Queen branch at Bisbee, Ariz. The company agreed to undertake a $25 million expansion program, including construction of a concentrating and leaching plant at the Bisbee mine and enlargement of the Douglas smelter. The Government agreed to buy the first 112,500 tons of the first 150,000 tons produced at 22e per lb if the company could not sell at a higher price. The new facilities will have a yearly capacity of 38,000 tons and should be in production by late 1954 or early 1955. • American Smelting & Refining Co. has started construction of a new building to house the Central Research laboratory at South Plainfield, N. J. It will have approximately 75 individual laboratories and an equal number of offices and shops. Modern apparatus to be installed will include electron microscopes, electric and fuelfired furnaces, miniature copper refineries and zinc plants, wire drawing machinery, and large pilot plant laboratory. Application of a constant geometry compression test to single crystals of aluminum of selected diameters from 1/4 to 1/64 in. showed the presence of a diameter-dependmt size effect. The most pronounced effects were found in those crystals oriented for single slip, while for specimens possessing orientations in the comers of the standard stereographic triangle virtually no size effect was exhibited. The yield stress of the crystals oriented for single slip was found to increase with decrease in specimen diameter, while the strain-hardening rate was found to be lower for the smaller specimens. The experimental results are in general agreement with those of other investigators obtained from lensile tests on copper and aluminum crystals. THE earliest systematic investigation of a possible size effect on the plasticity of metals was that of no,' who in 1926 performed tensile tests on cylindrical aluminum single crystals with diameters of 3 to 8 mm. Ono concluded that the gross stress-strain curve did not show a diameter dependence, but that the resistance to slip for strains of 0.1 pet and less appeared higher for 3-mm-diam crystals than for larger sizes. Later studies of aluminum by Maddin et al2 tentatively concluded that a size effect exists, but the conclusions were again open to question because of inconsistencies in the experimental data. Wu and Smoluchowski3 had previously shown that the slip system activated in a single-crystal sheet specimen of aluminum is a function of the specimen cross section in the slip direction, but no stress-strain data were obtained. Subsequently Fleischer and Chalmers4 studied the effect of the length of the slip direction of the primary-slip system on the stress-strain curve by testing aluminum crystals with geometrically dissimilar cross sections. In the course of this investigation a size effect was indicated in rather large crystals; however, the number of these tests was small. Other investigators have indicated that a size effect in aluminum is appreciable only for diameters of 0.5 mm or less.5, 6 Size-effect studies have also been carried out on copper crystals, the most detailed being that of Suzuki et a1.7 who performed tensile tests on specimens of many diameters ranging from 2 to 0.12 mm. Suzuki found a strong size dependence in the easy-glide region, both the extent of the easy glide and the hardening rate in easy glide were size-dependent, and the size effect was found to be orientation-dependent. Suzuki's results are in agreement with the less extensive observations of Pater-sonB and those of Garstone et al.9 A size effect was found by Rebstock using tubular copper crystals.'0 Size effects have also been noted in a brass,6, 11 in cadmium,12'19 and in hexagonal crystals.14 All the previously cited works have been entirely concerned with the variation of specimen cross section. The effects of specimen length and the change of specimen geometry which results from using progressively thinner specimens while maintaining the same specimen length have been largely ignored. A theoretical discussion of the effects of specimen length and geometry has been given by Hauser and Jackson,15 who predict a grip effect on easy glide as a function of specimen geometry provided that the specimen dimensions are large compared with the spacing between the slip bands, and by Fleischer and Chalmers,18 whose analysis of grip effects resulting from lattice rotation predicts an increase in easy glide with an increase in specimen length. A study of size and geometry effects in aluminum crystals by Kitajima and shimba17 indicated increasing amounts of easy glide in specimens of increasing length and identical cross section, and nearly identical stress-strain curves for specimens of different sizes having constant length-to-diameter ratios. Since the present study is primarily concerned with diameter dependence, the following factors were taken into account: specimen material, specimen geometry, testing method, range of sizes to be tested, and possible influence of surface and volume effects. LITERALLY from the four corners of the earth, from Jerusalem and China, from Mysore and Uganda, as well as from geophysicists in the United States, came contributions from workers in magnetic and electrical geo-physical methods, most of them unfortunately unable to be present themselves. The most lively discussion centered on the phenomena of natural potentials in the earth, dealt with in M. B. R. Rao's paper from Mysore, and in Parke Dickey's contribution, which he presented in person. In the oil fields, the weak potentials observed in sedimentary strata traversed by bore holes have traditionally been ascribed to phenomena of electro-filtration and electro-capillarity. Research tending to refute this theory was presented by Dickey, who reported the existence of natural potentials in core samples, and between strata exposed in underground workings. This precipitated a lively discussion as to the possible role of electro-filtration, selective adsorption of ions by mineral particles, and electrolytic potentials, in the production of this phenomenon.

IN the Wall Street journal for March 1, 1941, was a tabulation of the construction under way or under negotiation by thirteen iron and steel companies for a predicted increase in annual coke production of 3,165,600 tons. That even this figure was short of the mark is indicated by other plans, then being considered, for a later expansion of 2,610,000 tons additional. Considerable progress has already been made on thin program, for approximately 500 new ovens were put in operation in 1941. and well over 200 should be completed in 1942. These figures include a number of units that replace older and obsolete equipment.

The capillary effects in reservoir rock are discussed in terms of the pressures they cause in sandstones and dolomites. Data for the two-phase case (oil-gas or water-gas) and for the three-phase case (oil, water and gas in rock) are used to demonstrate that in one sense the wetting preference of a rock depends on its saturation. The nature of capillary hysteresis is described for partially stable conditions, and the concept is enlarged. Reproducibly measurable pressures include the "capillary pressure," which is the pressure difference between any two phases that are each interconnected; the "threshold pressure," necessary to force a nonwetting phase through partially saturated rock; the "displacement pressure," which is that special case of the threshold pressure in which both phases fully saturate separate portions of the rock. Displacement pressure is equal to the minimum value of the "capillary pressure." The theory of flow including capillary forces is developed at the producing surface of a well to reveal the presence there of a pressure discontinuity in the gas (or other nonwetting) phase that can be controlled to the end that more oil may be poduced from an oil field. Experiments with packed sand-flow tubes having artificial producing surfaces support the theory. Introduction The basic surface quantities acting in an oil field are two: namely, surface tensions and contact angles. These are the quantities, variously expressed, and particularized as spreading forces, adhesion tensions, heats of wetting, etc., which are measured in the laboratory by techniques mostly confined to flat or circularly cylindrical surfaces. Such measurements have not had the extensive engineering application they seem to deserve because in most practical cases they are unavoidably compounded with the complex and unapproached subject of the internal shape of the interstices of rock. In this paper it is intended that the pressure differences developed in rock by capillarity be examined, defined, and given some engineering use in terms of some new measurements that have been made. Such pressure differences—namely, the capillary pressure, the displacement pressure and the threshold pressure—seem to provide a proper contact between the basic molecular quantities and the oil field. While certain modifications of usage will be undertaken, the present effort rests upon the background of work by the U. S. Geological Survey,l by Versluys, and especially by W. 0. Smith, 3,4,5 which has been reviewed recently in papers by Leverett.=s7 The most important concept of pressure difference is the capillary pressure, a function of saturation that expresses the pressure difference between the interconnected phases in a rock.
