AT THE TIME of my first visit to Bolivia in 1927 the tin-mining industry was prosperous, the tin price at London being more than £300 per long ton of tin, and the operators were making every effort to bring their plants up to the very highest point of capacity as well as of efficiency. Any device or piece of equipment or method that gave promise of increasing production was welcomed regardless of the cost, and the plants were being modernized as rapidly as human ingenuity could make it possible. At the time of my second visit in 1932, however, conditions had changed materially. The price of tin had fallen to a little over £100 but costs had not decreased anywhere in proportion and operators were at their wit's end to cut the operating losses that were everywhere prevalent. Charles L. Bradbury, manager of the Empresa Minera de Huanuni, at Huanuni, Bolivia, had been recently called from Mexico to make all analysis of the situation and to attempt to work out a remedy for the economic conditions that threatened to close the mine. THE specific aim of this work has been to study certain forms of internal deterioration which occur in tungsten filaments when subjected to high temperatures under various conditions, and to determine the cause of such deterioration. This would naturally lead to a consideration of methods of control or means of prevention of the phenomena. The deterioration was first noticed as a peculiar condition in the grain boundaries of certain tungsten filaments which had been burned? for long periods in lamps. In these cases it was noted that the grain boundaries contained a number of minute black dots which were at first thought to be non-metallic inclusions. It was demonstrated later that these dots or pits, as they were designated, could be readily produced by burning filaments in an atmosphere of flowing hydrogen. This method was convenient and adequate for the purpose, and was adopted for most of the work discussed in this paper. The evidence accumulated to date indicates that these pits are actually small voids between the grains. The purpose of this paper is to present- the information on this interesting subject gathered during a period of about 3 years. As applied to tungsten, the subject appears to be of considerable importance, experience having shown that this pitting ?is frequently associated with poor performance of filaments in lamps. The question has arisen as to whether these intergranular pits are peculiar to tungsten, or if they occur in all metals. If they are found iii all metals, the facts will be of considerable theoretical interest, as the material at the grain boundary plays an important part in most of the current theories of the properties of metals and alloys.

The preparation of massive uranium metal containing very low concentrations of a number of light elements by bomb reduction of UF4, with calcium is described. Details of procedures are given for preparing high-purity ingredients for the bomb reduction. The as-reduced uranium metal contained, on the average, less than the following amounts of light element impurities, in ppm: Li, 0.1; Be, 0.1; B, 0.1; C, 25; 0, 70; Na, 1; Mg, 3; Al, 2; and Si, 7. Other impurities for which the metal was examined averaged, in ppm: Ca, < 10; V, < 10; Cr, 2; Mn, 6; Fe, 50; Co, < 5; Ni, 8; and Cu, 1. THE preparation of very high-purity uranium metal in massive form for research purposes is of great importance. Recently the kilogram-scale preparation of uranium metal containing less than 70 ppm of detected impurities was accomplished by Blumen-thal and coworkers by vacuum remelting of high-purity crystals of uranium obtained by fused salt electrolysis.1"3 Albert and coworkers4 have reported successful experiments in lowering the concentrations of certain impurity elements in uranium, notably iron, to a few ppm by the zone-melting method. The present paper describes the preparation of high-purity massive uranium metal by the bomb reduction of UF4, with calcium. Early in 1951 a program was undertaken at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory to prepare uranium metal of very high purity with respect to a number of the light elements. The methods considered for this purpose were 1) bomb reduction of a uranium halide with calcium, 2) electrolysis of fused salts, and 3) hot wire decomposition of UI4, The first of these processes had been used extensively at Los Alamos since 1943 (and still is used) for the production of uranium metal.5 In considering the three processes it was evident that either of the last two would require an extensive development program with no certainty of success. On the other hand, a study of available data showed that uranium metal of very high purity with respect to some light elements had occasionally been made in routine processing by the first method. It was therefore decided that an intensive study of the bomb-reduction process would be made to see if it could be improved to yield uranium metal with very low concentrations of light elements. DEVELOPMENT OF PROCEDURES The bomb-reduction process used at Los Alamos consists of reducing UF4 with calcium, using iodine as a booster. The reaction is carried out in a magnesium-oxide crucible enclosed in a steel bomb. Argon is used in the bomb to avoid objectionable side reactions which would occur in the presence of air. All ingredients for this bomb-reduction process were examined as possible sources of light elements. It was known that high-purity UF4 was required. The calcium used in the reductions was a source of carbon and magnesium. The magnesium-oxide crucibles were sources of boron, silicon, and magnesium. The iodine did not appear to be a source of any impurities. Pure UF4- The UF4 for bomb reduction is prepared from U3O3 , by successive reduction to UO2, with hydrogen and hydrofluorination of the UO2, with anhydrous HF. Since it was known that no impurities were normally introduced during the gas-solid reactions, effort was directed toward the preparation of high-purity U3O3. Of the many possible procedures for the purification of uranium solutions the following were investigated: 1) Precipitation of uranium peroxide. (Two procedures were tried. The first consisted of simultaneously adding hydrogen-peroxide and ammonium-hydroxide solutions to a uranyl-nitrate solution, containing citric and malonic acids, at such relative rates that precipitation was carried out at a constant pH of 1.5 The second consisted of simultaneously adding uranyl-nitrate, ammonium-hydroxide, and hydrogen-peroxide solutions to an aqueous solution

IN earlier work the effect of manganese on the general behavior of nitrogen in iron was the subject of a careful examination by Fast.&apos; Part of the investigation was made, in collaboration with one of the present authors (L.J.D.), by using the internal friction method. This technique, which has been described elsewhere,&apos; showed some significant changes in the properties of Fe-N alloys by the addition of a small amount of manganese namely: 1—Under standard conditions the maximum of the nitrogen peak in pure iron appears around 20 °C and the half width is about 27 °C. By addition of 0.5 atomic pct Mn a general broadening of the internal friction peak occurs. The half width is increased by about 9°C. Moreover, a shift of the maximum of about 5°C toward a higher temperature takes place, Fig. 2. 2—The precipitation of nitrogen from the supersaturated solution, measured, e.g., at 200 °C, was inhibited by the addition of the amount of manganese given in effect 1. The broadening of the nitrogen peak was confirmed in more recent work3 on samples which were prepared from Westinghouse Puron iron. The effect of manganese on the rate of precipitation, however, was much less striking than in the earlier work&apos; based on Philips high purity iron. Theory To explain the first change in properties just referred to, effect 1, the following two assumptions were made:&apos; First, every manganese atom in sub-stitutional solid solution creates around it six interstices located between an iron and a manganese atom, as is evident from Fig. 1. These interstices, conveniently called Fe-Mn interstices, have for nitrogen a free energy level which is AG* lower than the normal Fe-Fe interstices between two iron atoms. For such low concentrations of manganese as 0.5 atomic pct, the possibility that two manganese atoms will be nearest neighbors can be disregarded. Second, it is assumed that in addition to the normal relaxation time TFe at least one new relaxation time, Mn, Fe, enters in the phenomena which is associated with the elementary diffusion jumps between a Fe-Mn interstice and an adjacent Fe-Fe interstice. Fig. 1 gives schematically the free energy for a nitrogen atom as a function of its position along the line ABC. A tentative analysis of the nitrogen peak in a 0.5 pct Fe-Mn alloy based on these assumptions has been made in Fig. 2. The dotted curve with a maximum at 22°C is caused by jumps between Fe-Fe interstices, the dotted curve with maximum at 32°C by jumps between an Fe-Mn and an Fe-Fe interstice. The two effects added together give the dash-dot internal friction curve for the alloy. In the following these two components will be referred to as the normal peak at 22°C and the abnormal one. The practical importance of a knowledge of the rates of diffusion of carbon and of alloying elements in steel has often been pointed out.l,13 This importance lies chiefly, though by no means only, in the study of carbufizing and in the study of reactions involved in the eutectoid inversion in steel. The present paper is one of a series in which the rates of diffusion of carbon and of alloying elements in ?-Fe and their mutual effects are measured with precision. The present paper reports the results of measurements of diffusion coefficients D of manganese in ?-Fe over wide ranges of temperature, and concentration, and of the effect of carbon and impurities and of grain size upon these diffusion coefficients.‡ Data on the rate of diffusion of manganese in ?-Fe have been reported by Fry2 and by Paschke and Hauttmann.3 Claussen4 calculated the diffusion coefficient D from Fry&apos;s data as 3 X 10-10 sq, cm. per set. at 960º, which will be shown to be incorrect by many orders of magnitude. Paschke and Hauttmann gave a rough value of 9.6 x 10-8 Sq. cm. per set. at 14000. Neither of these workers considered the variation of D with concentration and with temperature, and neither studied the effect of carbon. Method and Materials Method.—The method employed is identical with that used earlier.5 Owing to the volatility of manganese and the consequent loss of manganese from the outer surfaces of the welded diffusion bars, these surfaces were discarded. The diffusion anneals were performed in argon, except One (test 18) in which hydrogen was employed for purposes noted below. The temperatures reported are accurate to about 3" and constant within 1°C; the diffusion times are reported to the nearest half hour. The specimens were furnace-coo1ed after the diffusion ation, at about 2° per min. Layers, usually 0.004 in. thick, parallel to the welded interface, were machined from the specimens after the diffusion anneal and analyzed for manganese to 0.I Per cent Mn; the distances of these layers from the interface was measured to ±0.0002 in. The concentration-penetration curves obtained were analyzed by both the Grube and the Matano solutions.8 The D values calculated by these two methods do not differ appreci000. The Grube solution was used except in tests in which the effect of concentration upon D was greater than so per cent; in such cases the Matano method, which explicitly provides for the variation of D with concentration,&apos; is the more reliable. In general, the number of layers machined from the zones of variable composition were large enough to permit the use of the average layer composition as that of the center of the layer. JOHN H. NELSON, Worcester, Mass.-At our plant we have done considerable work on notch-bar testing and are farther at sea now than when we started. So far, we have been unable to get the notch-bar test to be consistent with any other known test. Lately, I have been investi-gating the effect of the position of the notch-bar specimen in a, bar. To do this I took a 3, ½ in. square bar and quartered it, then heat treated the four quarters. Each of these pieces was again quartered and a specimen machined and notched. "In this way we would have notch-bar tests from the exterior to the interior of the bar. These were made of such lengths that it was possible to make four impact tests on each speci-men. Extreme care was taken in marking the position of these test speci-mens in the original bar. The notches were then cut with relation to position of the specimen in the original bar. The second notch was cut 90° from the first, and so on around the specimen. In this way, we have found that, with a 3 ½ in. bar of 0.4 or 0.5. per cent. carbon steel when properly heat treated, we could get impact values ranging from 15 to 100 ft.-lb. Just why this is the case we are unable to state; but it does appear to be a fact that along the outside of the original bar the notch-bar test seems to be low and increases toward the center, but it is not always consistent. For instance, we may have, on a single specimen; one notch-bar test giving us 15 ft.-lb. and another 100 ft.-lb. We have not found such inconsistencies in alloy steels. Alloy steel is consistently good or consistently bad. If it. is good, you cannot readily destroy the impact value, no matter what you do; if it is bad-that is, if it is a poor notch-bar steel-and you have sufficient latitude in your draw, you may correct it. In other words, if the hardness you are working to will allow you to draw to about 1050° F.(561° C.) or over and then quench this steel from the draw heat, you. can raise the im-pact value of the steel from about 4 or 10 ft.-lb. up to-40-or 50 ft.-lb: Just what occurs I do not know. There is evidently a critical-point in steels that have poor impact value, in the neighborhood of 1000 F. to 1050° F. (536° to 561° C.).

FOLLOWING the deformation 01 zinc monocrys-tals, sharply bent basal planes are observed near several types of inhomogeneities. Three of these in-homogeneities have characteristics which are quite regular so that they can be studied and analyzed. These are compressive kink bands, "deformation bands," and the inhomogeneities near end restraints. The present paper describes experiments in which "deformation bands" were artificially produced, and bend plane phenomena are discussed in terms of dislocation theory. Also, two new bend plane phenomena are described. The importance of bend plane phenomena in the deformation of crystals is not widely recognized. Many phenomena may be explained in a manner similar to the discussion in this paper. Jillson1 has pointed out that the "punching effect" in zinc is a bend plane phenomenon and is not caused by prismatic slip.&apos; Bowles3 has suggested that they may be involved in diffusionless phase changes. Cahn4 has discussed the role of bend plane formation in the polygonization of zinc. Experimental Work Tensile Kink Bands: Because of the geometrical similarity between "deformation bands" and "kink bands" (compare Fig. 1 of this paper with Fig. 1 of the paper by Hess and Barrett"), the band shown in Fig. 1 of this paper will be called a "tensile kink band," and that shown by Hess and Barrett will be called a "compressive kink band." It is felt that the term "deformation band" should be reserved for banded structures in polycrystalline materials such as iron." Tensile kink bands seem to form spontaneously in aluminum crystals deformed by tensile loading.7-10 In zinc and cadmium crystals they do not form in good, carefully loaded specimens.&apos;." However, tensile kink bands can be produced artificially in zinc crystals. The present authors did this by scratching one of the flat surfaces of triangular crystals transversely with a sharp needle. Natural tensile kink bands caused by inhomogeneities sometimes appeared in deformed crystals which were identical in appearance with the artificially produced ones. Zinc monocrystals were grown by the Bridgman method in graphite molds. Chemically pure zinc (99.999+ pct Zn) was used and the molds were sealed inside evacuated pyrex tubes during growth. The crystal cross sections were equilateral triangles with a typical base of 0.210 in. The artificial kink band shown in Fig. 1 is typical of tensile kink bands in zinc. The band lies between two bend planes which run from upper right to lower left and is inclined oppositely to the slip bands which are sharply bent at the two bend planes. The general form of the artificial tensile kink bands was independent of the scratch depth (1 to 5 mils deep) and also independent of which side was scratched. These variables did cause variations, however. Deep scratches produced more localized kink bands than light scratches. Also, if the angle between the slip plane traces and a transverse scratch varied appreciably among the three sides, then localization of the resulting kink bands also varied. Furthermore, if the slip direction lay nearly parallel to the scratched side, the band was more developed near the scratched side than at the opposite edge. Scratches produced tensile kink bands for crystal orientations from xo = 15" to x, = 75". Fig. 2 shows a scratched crystal after deformation. One triangular side lies in the plane of the photograph. The right hand tensile kink band was produced by a transverse scratch on the upper right side. The next two kink bands were the result of scratches on the front surface. The kink band at the left was caused by a scratch on the lower back side. All four bands have the same general form. A longitudinal scratch was also made on the crystal shown in Fig. 2 to determine the effect of a scratch on the critical shear stress. The critical shear stress of the scratched region was 33.9 g per sq mm compared to 24.4 g per sq mm for the un-scratched region above it. Fig. 3 shows Laue patterns of the crystal shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 3a shows the pattern of the undeformed crystal. The orientation was x, = 21°, A, = 31". After deformation, Fig. 3b was made of the homogeneously deformed portion of the crystal. The spots are compact but split into two halves. This region was elongated 45 pct and its orientation was x = 14", X = 20"; the sine law predicts x = 14", A = 20.5". Fig. 3c was taken near the center of the middle tensile kink band of Fig. 2. The pattern shows a range of orientations and polygonization in this region. The spread in orientation was due to the fact that the basal planes were curved (see Fig. 1) rather than flat as in the ideal case. Some may also have been the result of elastic distortions and "local curvatures." The orientation range was x = 23" to 32", A = 30" to 42". It is apparent from Fig. 3 that the material inside and outside the kink band rotated in opposite directions with respect to the tension axis during deformation. Dislocation half-loops, artificially introduced by sprinkling with carborundum, were subjected to stress using three-point loading. The different stages of loop expansion and multiplication were then correlated with the macroscopic stress-deflection curve. Loop expansion started at approximately one-third of the "yield stress," defined here as the motivation stress. Above one-half of the "yield stress" simple multiplication commenced while about two-thirds of the yield stress gross multiplication developed short slip-line segments. These values were not affected by the age of surfaces exposed to both dry and wet air. Slip was not detected on unsprinkled crystals below two-thirds of the "yield stress." Thus the stress to activate intrinsic sources, defined here as the activation stress, was approximately twice the motivation stress. This relationship was independent of the strain rate used. It is concluded that lattice resistance takes the form of a viscous drag rather than a static type of force. THE importance of surface condition and environment as one of the more significant factors controlling the mechanical properties of ionic solids has recently received renewed attention.1-4 In some materials, notably the alkali halides, exposing freshly cleaved specimens to the atmosphere results in a progressive hardening and embrittlement of the crystals. This has been attributed to the surface layer becoming "aged," thereby restricting the motion of dislocations in such a way that pileup and eventually fracture results. It is necessary therefore in studying the mechanical properties of ionic crystals to inquire first into the density and distribution of dislocations in the normal cleaved surface and to understand the role these dislocations play in the onset of plastic flow. Knowledge of the effect of environment on this behavior will then assist in understanding the mechanism of embrittlement on aging. In the work reported here a method is described for studying the initiation of plastic flow from dislocation sources in the surface of magnesium oxide crystals. Preliminary results are described of the influence of surface age on this behavior. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES The magnesium oxide used in this investigation was obtained from the Norton Co. and had a nominal purity of 99.5.pct. Single-crystal specimens, having dimensions typically 1/4 by 1/8 in. cross section and 1 in. in length, were prepared by cleavage over (100) planes from the parent crystal. They were deformed under three-point loading with 3/4 in. spacing between the two end supports and a constant rate of deflection at the center of 0.001 in. per min. The maximum strain rate therefore was 1.5 X 10-5 sec-1. Reasons for choosing this particular form of loading will become apparent in a later section. In addition, a number of confirmatory type tests have been performed at higher loading rates where the maximum strain rate was increased to 1 x 10-3 sec -1. Following deformation the crystals were etched to reveal the dislocation distribution. In a previous paper5 we described a satisfactory etching solution consisting of 5 parts of saturated ammonium chloride, one part of sulfuric acid, and one part distilled water. Immersion of the crystals for 1/4 hr at room temperature developed reproducible conical etch pits at the points where dislocations emerged through the surface. It should be mentioned that dislocations freshly introduced by room temperature deformation gave sharply pointed etch pits which generally distinguished them from the almost flat-bottomed pits obtained on "grown-in" dislocations. The distinction is obvious in the photomicrograph included in Fig. 5(b). Annealing crystals at 1000°C for 12 hr on the other hand gave sharper etch pits on the grown-in dislocations and the distinction was no lower -possible; a similar observation has been reported for lithium fluoride. We have succeeded furthermore in chemically polishing magnesium-oxide crystals. Boiling in fresh 85 pct ortho-phosphoric acid for only 1 min resulted in a microscopically smooth surface which could again be etched to reexamine the dislocation distribution. This boiling time was sufficient to remove the surface damage introduced by cleavage (see next section). IN the last book I have explained the methods of delimiting- the meers along each kind of vein, and the duties of mine officials. In this book1 I will in like manner explain the principles of underground mining and the art of surveying. First then, I will proceed to deal with those matters which pertain to the former heading, since both the subject and methodical arrangement require it. And so I will describe first of all the digging of shafts, tunnels, and drifts on venae profundae; next I will discuss the good indications shown by canales2, by the materials which are dug out, and by the rocks ; then I will speak of the tools by which veins and rocks are broken down and excavated ; the method by which fire shatters the hard veins ; and further, of the machines with which water is drawn from the shafts and air is forced into deep shafts and long tunnels, for digging is impeded by the inrush of the former or the failure of the latter ; next I will deal with the two kinds of shafts, and with the making of them and of tunnels ; and finally, I will describe the method of mining venae dilatatae, venae cumulatae, and stringers.

The extraction of quartz from siliceous iron ores by dissolution in sodium hydroxide solution has been described in detail in AIME Transactions. l923 data reported covered the temperature range from 230-416°F, where a continuous increase in the amount of silica extracted with increase in temperature was found. It is the purpose of this paper to describe some unexpected results of more recent work exploring principally the range of 500600°F where higher rates and greater amounts of silica extraction were antici-p ted. In brief, the experimental procedure consists in digesting the ore under pressure in solutions of sodium hydroxide, filtering the suspension and weighing and analyzing the dried residue for iron content. The amount of extraction is calculated from the weight loss or from the iron analysis of the residue and that of the original ore.

During the past five years we have probably witnessed greater technological advances than in any similar period. Industry and science have steadily marched ahead. The makers of iron and steel products have watched with great interest the development of streamlined trains, faster and safer airplanes, the entirely new science of air-conditioning and the widespread use of stainless steels. Since 1930, we have witnessed the erection of the world&apos;s largest suspension bridge, the largest and fastest ocean liner and the spectacular Boulder Dam, while even greater things are planned in these particular fields. During the past five years we have probably witnessed greater technological advances than in any similar period. Industry and science have steadily marched ahead. The makers of iron and steel products have watched with great interest the development of streamlined trains, faster and safer airplanes, the entirely new science of air-conditioning and the widespread use of stainless steels. The application of aerial photographs to all phases of geologic mapping is set forth, indicating the advantages to be gained in different types of country and undcr varying climatic conditions. Methods of field and office procedure are given from a geological point of view, as well as suggestions regarding the best methods of aerial mapping for different uses and under varying field conditions, including the study of submarinc geology. Aerial photographs with accompanying geologic maps are shown to illustrate the appearance from the air of different geologic features under varying climatic and topographic conditions. Introduction The following paper is in no sense a contribution to knowledge; it is merely an attempt to indicate some of the benefits that may be expected from the use of aerial photographs in geologic mapping and to mention some inherent limitations. The writer has used aerial photographs in his own work for the past 13 years and has had ample opportunity to observe their use in the hands of others. From this experience certain conclusions have been drawn, which may be helpful to those using aerial photographs for the first time. It must he remembered that a photograph of the earth&apos;s surface can delineate only that which the eye can see; therefore the geologist should not expect more from an aerial photograph than he would be able to observe were he in the photographer&apos;s airplane looking at the area to be photographed. Theoretically, if the geologist had sufficient artistic ability, he could draw as good a geologic map from his position in the plane as he could from observation of the photograph. Practically this cannot be done because the airplane moves at a high rate of speed, which in itself prohibits detailed observation and, no matter how great the geologist&apos;s artistic ability, he could not reproduce the detail that can be recorded by a camera. An aerial photograph is a picture map of an area. The picture may be studied in the office until the geologist is thoroughly familiar with every minute detail of the surface of the ground he is about to geologize. If it is an area, underlain by sedimentary rocks, much may be learned

The oxidation kinetics of single-crystal silicon has been investigated using extremely dry oxygen as the oxidant. Two techniques were used. The first involved a flow system with which incremental thickness measurements were made. This sytem provided an oxygen ambient at atmospheric pressure which had a moisture content of less than 0.1 ppm of water. The second technique involved measuring the change in volume of oxygen with time in a closed system. A temperature range of 900O to 1200 "C and a pressure range of 20 to 760 Tory were covered. Both techniques showed that a simple parabolic rate law holds only at the higher temperatures. At lower temperatures, the data up to 5000Å can be fitted well to a linear-parabolic equation. The two constants in this rate equation are examined in terms of a physical model. The parabolic portion of the low-temperature oxidatLon fits along the high-temperature curve of an Arrhenius plot. The parabolic rate constant for the flow-system technique can be expressed by k = 2 x 10-9 exp (L 31 kcalRT) sq cm per sec. The manostatic technique gave k = 1 x 10-exp (- 23 kcalRT) sq cm per sec. By extending the thickness range to over 104. a rate law of X = At seems to fit all of the data better than the linear-Pavabolic law. Here the exponent n increases from 0.518 at 1150 V to 0.637 at 900°C. PASSIVATION of silicon planar devices through thermal oxidation is of such great importance that considerable effort has been devoted to the study of the process.17 Much of this work involves hydrothermal oxidation, in which H2O is the oxidant: whereby H2 is produced. It has been proposed that the reaction proceeds by the formation of Si-OH groups and hydroxyl diffusion through the film to react with the silicon surface. Thus, the silicon oxide layer probably contains residual hydrogen in some form after oxidation in H2O and it has already been established that hydrogen has a marked effect on the electronic properties of oxide-passivated silicon surfaces. Silicon is oxidized by oxygen at elevated temperatures; but the rate of oxide formation is considerably lower than that for 0." By using dry O2 as the sole oxidant, the presence of residual hydrogen is presumably avoided. At present, the mechanism of thermal oxidation by dry O2 is a matter for conjecture, and the presence of small amounts of H2O was reported to have a marked effect on the rate of oxide formation10 (perhaps on the electronic properties of the surface, as well). Hence, this study of the kinetics of silicon oxide growth in 0, was undertaken: 1) to determine the oxidation rate at atmospheric pressure in a system designed to exclude rigorously all traces of H2O in the ambient 0,; 2) to obtain oxidation-rate data in situ in dry O2 by means of a continuous monitoring of the amount of 0, consumed during oxide growth. These objectives are complementary—the first assesses what effects (if any) are obtained by excluding H2O from the reaction, and the second expands this information while at the same time avoiding the uncertainty inherent in relying upon incremental measurements of oxide growth to furnish kinetic data. DURING a current program of research on the structure and properties of liquid sodium alloys, the need arose for information on the solubilities as a function of temperature of several B subgroup metals in liquid sodium. In the absence of reliable information in the literature for several of these systems, par- ticularly at temperatures in the range 100° to 300°C, an apparatus was constructed to determine solubilities by a direct melt-sampling technique, followed by wet-chemical analysis for both sodium and the solute metal. The details of the technique have been described previously.&apos; The solubility of indium in liquid sodium was determined at eight temperatures in the range 100° to 270°C. The solubility as a function of temperature is shown on Fig. 1; this represents the liquidus line over this composition range. A cooling curve was plotted after the completion of the sampling and an arrest was observed at 94.9°C which must be interpreted as being the result of a eutectic reaction. By extrapolation of the liquidus to this temperature, the eutectic composition was estimated to be about 0.25 at. pct In. The present estimate of the eutectic temperature and composition are in good agreement with the values of 96.0° to 96.2°C and between 0.28 and 0.45 at. pct In, respectively, which were reported by Heycock and Neville.2 However, no further information on the liquidus of this system at the sodium-rich end could be found in the literature for comparison. "The 100,000 volt sub-station at Butte is located near the center of the district in which the power is distributed. The sub-station building is 150 feet by 50 feet in plan and 50 feet high. It is a brick walled, steel framed structure with concrete floors and roof.There are installed at present four banks of single-phase transformers, rated at 3,600 k-w. per bank and connected in delta on both high and low tension sides. They step the voltage down from 102,000 to 2,500, at which voltage it is distributed to customers. The transformers are installed in fireproof compartments, entirely shut off from the rest of the building by brick walls and opening only out of doors. The transformers are mounted on wheels and can readily be run out onto a flat car, which stands on a track running parallel with the building in front of the row of transformer compartments. This arrangement furnishes a convenient method of handling the transformers, both at the time of installation and afterward, in case it is necessary to make repairs."
