A presentation of the W-Ru constitution diagram is given. Techniques utilized in the determination of phase boundary values include electron micro-probe analysis of two-phased alloys and diffusion couples, as well as normal metallographic and X-ray methods. The primary features of the diagram are: 1) a terminal solid solution of ruthenium in tungsten with a maximum solubility of 23 at. pct Ru at 2300°C; 2) a terminal solid solution of tungsten in ruthenium with a maximum solubility of 48 at. pct W at 2205°C; 3) a o phase of maximum breadth about 6 at. pct based on the composition W3Ru2 which forms peritectically from the melt at 2300°C, and which decomposes eutectoidally at 1667 °C to form a twigs ten and 0 ruthenium; 4) a eutectic at 45 at. pct Ru and 2205°C with the products being o plus ß ruthenium. THE W-Ru diagram has previously been studied only in a cursory fashion. Raub and alter' obtained a 1400°C isotherm in which they observed no intermediate phases, and on which they established the limits of solubility as 36.5 at. pct W in ruthenium and about 1.5 at. pct Ru in tungsten. In addition, Obrowski2 found a o phase forming peritectically from the melt and existing only above 1650°C. Below this temperature the phase was presumed to decompose eutectoidally. The present work finds the diagram as given in Fig. 1. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The materials used for alloy preparation in determining the W-Ru constitution diagram were 99.9 pct pure ruthenium powder supplied by Baker Chemical Co., and 99.9 pct pure tungsten powder from General Electric Co. Typical analyses of these elements are given in Table I. Initial alloys at 10 at. pct intervals were prepared from the metal powders by the following method. Powders sufficient for 25 g of the alloys were weighed out with an accuracy of 0.1 mg and blended mechanically. After blending, the powders were compacted, in a steel die, at approximately 30,000 psi. The compacts were sintered in an electric vacuum furnace in order to remove adsorbed gases and to achieve partial densification prior to arc-melting. Vacua of 10-4 mm Hg or less were maintained in sintering as the furnace temperature was raised to approximately 2000°C. Sintering times ranged from 10 to 20 hr. The sintered compacts were arc-melted under a protective atmosphere of purified helium. Melting was conducted on a water-cooled copper hearth, utilizing a nonconsumable tungsten electrode. In the melting process, each alloy was turned over and re-melted on opposite sides from four to six times to ensure complete melting and to eliminate gross in-homogeneities. The arc-melter used had a vacuum capability of 5 X 10-6 mm Hg, and a leak rate of about 20 -liters per hr. Chemical analysis techniques for refractory metal-platinum group metal combinations are not well-established; therefore, composition control and determination depended principally upon weight-loss observations and calculations. This consisted in weighing each alloy after sintering and after arc-melting, and calculating the maximum and minimum composition values, assuming the total weight losses to be first all tungsten, and then all ruthenium. Since composition uncertainty was directly related to weight loss, care was taken to minimize losses in handling, compacting, and melting. The cost and the speed of sinking a shaft are factors of so great importance in operating a mine, that the data given in Table I., herewith published, will be of interest and value to all engaged in practical mining; and for this reason the data are communicated for permanent and accessible record in our Transactions. The figures 'of cost cover the period from January 1, 1903, to May 31, 1903, during which time the total depth sunk was 858 ft. So far as I know, the cost of sinking per foot (£13,15s., 11.04d.) of a shaft of the dimensions 21 ft. by 6 ft. in hard rock, is the cheapest yet on record; and the speed of 213.5 ft. per month, which was attained during May, 1903, is also the best record for speed in sinking in rock so hard as that of this shaft. During the period from January 1 to May 31, 1903, there were 144 rounds worked, involving 4,032 holes, of a total depth of 28,963 ft. 2.4 in., which is equivalent to an average depth of 7 ft. 2.2 in. per hole bored. These data are of added interest from the fact that the work was done practically by native labor.

SATISFACTORY metallographic sample preparation of very soft metals, such as lead and its alloys is generally difficult. The prime requisite of any technique must be that the result gives an undis-torted microstructure for the microscopist to examine. A small amount of mechanical polishing followed by a chemical or electrolytic polish is usually the most desirable way to obtain an undis-torted surface. Several chemical-4 and electrolytic3-' polishing solutions have been developed for dilute lead alloys. Perchloric acid mixtures (with acetic anhydride, ethyl alcohol, or water) are among the most prominent electropolishing solutions used for lead; however, the presence of bismuth in the alloy precludes the use of any perchloric-containing solution. The other solutions1-7 were found to be unsatisfactory on alloys ranging from 10 to 65 wt pct Bi in lead. With increasing bismuth content, the microstructure shows a lead (terminal solid solution), 0-6 mixture, E (peri-tectically formed hexagonal phase), and E bismuth mixture (eutectic at 56.7 wt pct Bi).9 The metallographic samples were mounted in "Araldite" epoxy (the heat generated during polymerization does not alter the microstructure), ground by hand on well-waxed silicon carbide papers (400 and 600 grit), and polished with 3- and 0.25-CL diamond paste on billiard and microcloths, respectively. The use of the various polishing and etching solutions reported in the literature resulted in the formation of irremovable reaction products on the sample surface when applied to "as-ground" or "as-polished" surfaces. The E phase was the most difficult to clean chemically and in the development of an etchant for this system several solutions which satisfactorily etched the bismuth or a phase were unacceptable because of their reaction with the E. It was found that a mixture of 50 ml lactic acid 30 ml nitric acid 20 ml (30 pct) hydrogen peroxide (Solution #1) was a satisfactory etchant for the a-matrix alloys. The samples were prepared as before and etched after 1 min of polishing with 3-p diamond paste. The etchant was applied by swabbing (light pressure) for 30 sec to 1 min and the sample was then rinsed in running water. The E has a slight stain and the a is fairly bright, Fig. 1.

SUCCESSFUL mining today means proper mechanization. Before any mine can begin production on a paying scale, some machinery must be installed. There must be pumps to remove water, fans and blowers to provide proper ventilation, elevators and hoists to raise materials, and a source of power to turn the countless wheels on which the world's mineral supply rolls from its earthhound source to the market. Only the prospector with his burro and the anthracite "bootlegger" continue to mine without mechanical aid, and with the recent years even these can be discounted, for the burro has given way to the Model T, and the "independent" coal miner must have a truck to haul his coal away. This article presents a simple arithmetic derivation for the relationship between sharpness of classification and circulating load, as well as world-wide industrial data which are compatible with the derived equation. It is shown that the sharpness of classification decreases with increasing circulating load. Based on the evidence available a comparison is presented between the performance of the present-day hydraulic classifiers. In a continuously operated closed circuit grinding system the tonnage and the fineness of the components may be indicated as follows: Eq. 8 expresses the relationship between sharpness of classification and circulating load in closed grinding circuits. If CL = 0, E = 100% according to the definition used. This, however, is a purely theoretical case because any apparatus to be called a classifier must produce the conventional two products. Furthermore, if CL = m, E =0%. In order to visualize the meaning of Eq. 8, the effect of factors d (fineness or percentage of under-size of classifier overflow at size x) and b (fineness or percentage of undersize of classifier sands at size x) should be studied. By the most rigid standard, factor d should be given the value of 100%. By so doing the size of classification is defined as that screen size x through which 100% of the classifier

STUDY of the plasticity of germanium or other semiconductor crystals affords unusual opportunities to extend our knowledge of deformation mechanisms. Crystals are available having extraordinary perfection and very high purity. They deform by slip on the systems {111} <110>,1-3 as do crystals of the simple face-centered-cubic structure. Dislocations generated in them during slip are easily revealed in the form of etch pits on either (111) or (100) surfaces.4,5 This fact alone makes possible more detailed studies of mechanisms than is usually the case with metals but, even further, the effect of deformation on their electrical conductivity is very large compared with metals. This comes about not only because the mobility of the charge carriers is reduced, as in deformed metals, but also because the number of these carriers is greatly altered. This latter effect seems closely related to the formation of both line and point imperfections during deformation and thus provides a needed tool for the study of the kinds and distributions of these imperfections. Other investigators have deformed germanium at elevated temperatures by bending,1, 6-8 compres-sion,6, 0,10 tension,2,3,6,11,12 torsion,23 and indentation." Wang and Alexander" have also reported successful indentation at room temperature. Dislocation etch pits consequent to deformation have been observed and studied.7,8,10,18,14,20 The experiments to be de- scribed here include principally the compression and the subsequent annealing of germanium with concomitant studies of etch pits, microstructures, and electrical properties. Both single crystals and heavily twinned specimens were used. Some indentation studies are included. Experimental Methods Plastic compression was effected in the apparatus shown schematically in Fig. 1. It consists of two tantalum platens contained in a helium atmosphere and so arranged that pressure can be applied by a hydraulic press. The specimen between the platens is heated by the surrounding furnace. The specimen is usually a small crystal cube about 0.30 in. on an edge. A control specimen is always inserted so, that it is subject to the same thermal cycle as the one being deformed. This serves to detect any impurity contamination that might accompany the thermal treatment. For high temperature work, where such impurity contamination often occurs, the specimens were first plated with gold whenever subsequent electrical properties were to be determined. This method" is effective in preventing significant contamination of germanium up to temperatures at least as high as 750°C, as evidenced by the constancy of the electrical conductivities of control specimens subjected to the same heat treatments. The total range of temperature used for deformation was from 375°C, the lowest at which significant flow was observed, up to 900°C. THE investigation reported herein was undertaken to obtain data to supplement those presented in an earlier paper,&apos; particularly for longer times at a higher temperature. This information may further develop our knowledge of the mechanism of diffusion in substitutional solid solutions. Diffusion of solute atoms interstitially dissolved is not difficult to visualize; it can take place without much disturbance of the solvent atoms. The mechanism of diffusion of solute atoms substitutionally dissolved is not so easily understood. Many theories have been advanced. Rosenhain,2.3 Frenkel,4 Smekal,5 Langmuir,3,6 Steigman, Shockley and Nix,7 and Johnson8 all proposed theories to explain diffusion. Langmuir&apos;s proposed mechanism consisted of a simple cyclic interchange of atoms involving an interchange in lattice positions of four or more atoms. This mechanism, accepted by the author at the time of his previous publication,&apos; and apparently quite generally accepted, required a net exchange in positions of both solute and solvent atoms in equal numbers. In other words, the rate of diffusion of the solvent and solute atoms would be the same. That this cyclic interchange in lattice positions of solute and solvent atoms in equal numbers is the only true mechanism of diffusion is denied by the evidence presented in this paper. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE This modification of similar procedure1 will be outlined briefly. The method consisted of the following steps: I. A pure Muntz metal (60.6 per cent Cu, 0.1 per cent total impurities) that was almost all beta brass at 780°C. was chosen. 2. The brass was turned between centers in a lathe to a diameter of 0.5965 inches. 3. After the brass was cleaned, it was electroplated with pure copper to a diameter of about one inch. 4. The sample was heated slowly to 400°C. under reduced pressure and held at that temperature for 4 hr. to remove occluded gases. It was then cooled to room temperature. 5. The sample was heated to 780°C. ±3°C. and held at that temperature for different lengths of time; then quenched. Samples were cut off each time after quenching. Metallographic samples 34 in. thick were removed at I hr., 6 hr., 24 hr., 96 hr. and 701 hr. After 96 and 701 hr. samples of about I in. were removed for X-ray analysis. 6. The metallographic samples were polished on the cross section and photo-micrographs were taken. 7. The I-in. samples were polished and etched on both ends. With the aid of a microscope each was carefully mounted in a four-jaw chuck in a lathe, so that they could be accurately bored for an arbor. 8. Turnings were taken for each X-ray sample. After each set of turnings, the sample was heated in an oil bath for about 3a hr. at 300°C. It was then etched in 25

R. S. BUSK*—I wish first to congratulate the authors of this paper both for the work done and the presentation of that work. We have also been working on this type of alloy development, but any technical contribution I might have is better reserved for a separate paper which is planned in the near future. However, I would like to insert a word of caution. The alloys described in this paper are still very much in the laboratory stage. There still remains the quite vexing problem of property stability at slightly elevated temperatures which must be solved before the properties quoted can be effectively utilized. These alloys are extremely interesting and I am confident that the problems can be solved. However, the present existence of those problems must not be overlooked. I have one question with regard to the work-hardening test. If the work harden-ability of magnesium is compared to aluminum using a more standard test such as the Meyer Analysis the magnesium is found to work harden the more rapidly. Is the test developed for this work truly a work-hardening test or a measure of something else ? J. H. JACKSON (authors&apos; reply)—I am sure we appreciate the comments of Mr. Busk and we are pleased that the Dow Chemical Co. has also undertaken work in this field. It is a big field. We, of course, are continuing our research for the Navy Bureau of Aeronautics, since, as clearly shown in the paper, the alloys are not completely developed. With regard to Mr. Busk&apos;s comments on the relative work-hardenability of aluminum and magnesium, the comparison we cited in the paper was intended merely to show that the results obtained by our method of testing were independent of the yield strength of the materials. We believe that this test method afforded a rough indication of the work-hardenability of the magnesium-lithium base alloys. It is not known whether this method affords greater or less accuracy than the Meyer Process, which is based upon a hardness-test impression. It is quite possible, since work-hardenability is a function of metal purity, that our results, obtained for commercial aluminum and magnesium, would be different if high-purity metals had been used. A. C. LOONAM—Lithium has some very interesting effects on magnesium. The paper showed that even small percentages increased ductility. These small amounts changed the axial ratio of the hexagonal magnesium from 1.624 in the pure metal to 1.606 in the saturated alpha solution, a value close to that of titanium, which has a ratio of 1.601. You will recall an article in the January, 1949, issue of the Journal of Metals where it was stated that titanium can be cold-rolled over 90 pct without any significant edge cracking. At 4.9 or 5 pct lithium, a change begins in crystal structure—from a hexagonal close packed to body centered cubic. There are two phases over a short range of lithium content, but at 10 pct the structure becomes completely cubic. The melting points of alloys in this range of lithium content are relatively high. Alloys even up to the six ratio have melting points above 500°C; this represents a relatively small reduction in melting point from pure magnesium itself. The magnesium-lithium system has a number of very interesting characteristics. This is only a very small part of the story. J. H. THERE is a disagreement among the various authors about the exact manner of transformation of ZrCr2. Rostokerl and others2 stated that ZrCr2 had a C-14 (MgZn2) type of structure below 1000°C and a C-15 (MgCu2) type of structure at temperatures above 1000°C. Alisova3 and others4 reached the opposite conclusion and stated that the transformation temperature is close to the melting point of ZrCr2. A literature survey shows that various investigators3&apos;= who homogenized the specimens at a temperature higher than 1000°C have concluded that ZrCr2 had the C-15 structure at room temperature. Meanwhile, Jordan et al.4 reached similar conclusions without annealing the specimen. Other investigators1,2,6,7 who X-rayed the specimens in the as-cast condition without annealing reached different conclusions. The investigation reported herein was conducted with the aim of exploring the exact manner of transformation of ZrCr2 by various heat treatment tests. The alloys for this examination were prepared from iodide-reduced zirconium crystal bars, 99.9 pct purity, and electrolytic chromium, 99.9 pct purity. They were melted in a nonconsumable electrode arc furnace with water-cooled copper crucible in a helium atmosphere. The melting loss of each alloy was less than 1.5 pct by weight. Chemical analysis of a randomly selected specimen indicated that there was a very close agreement between calculated and analyzed compositions. Before being heat-treated each specimen was encapsulated in a vycor or quartz tube inside which an argon atmosphere was maintained at a pressure of lower than 1 atm. In determining the crystal structure of each specimen with a Debye-Scherrer camera, the standard procedure8 for X-ray quality analysis (Hanawalt method) was followed. The different series of heat treatment tests in this investigation are tabulated in Tables I and 11. The tests in Series I, specimens from 1-1 to 1-9, which were similar to Rostoker&apos;s experiment1 indicated that the transformation temperature seemed to fall between 870° and 900°C and that the crystal structure of ZrCr2 at lower temperature seemed to be of the C-14 type. However, once the compound is transformed to C-15 type, it is impossible to reverse the transformation back to the C-14 type by first heating the specimen above 900°C and then annealing it slowly below 900°C as shown in Experiments II-1 to II-3. Thus, it appears that the specimen of ZrCr2 will transform from C-14 to C-15 structure when heated above 900°C but will not transform from C-15 to C-14 when annealed slowly passing 900° C even after the extremely slow cooling process such as indicated in the experiment of Specimen II-3. As a valid transformation temperature is a temperature at which the transformation is reversible, therefore the temperature 900°C (or other temperature close to 900°C) is not the transformation temperature for ZrCr2 and the C-14 structure is not the stable structure of ZrCr2 at lower temperatures. The C-14 structure is retained at room temperature because the transformation to C-15 structure is very sluggish and the fast cooling after melting does not allow enough time for the transformation to take place. Additional energy is required to alter the metastable condition of the C-14 structure. The sluggishness of this transformation was again demonstrated through another series of experiments. Four specimens with C-14 structure were taken. Then they were annealed at 900°C but each specimen was soaked for a different period of time, Table 11. X-ray diffraction patterns of this group indicated that the C-14 structure gradually disappeared as the soaking period was lengthened. The figures listed under the column "C-14 Structure, pct" were estimated from the intensity of the d = 2.330 line of the diffraction pattern corresponding to the structure. Notice that the intensity of this line became weaker for longer soaking periods. To determine the transformation temperature of ZrCr2, specimens with C-14 structure (as-cast condition) were annealed at 1300°, 1400°, 1500°, 1550°, and 1600°C, respectively. A final specimen was first heat-treated to 1500°C in order to transform it to C-15 structure, then heat-treated at 1600°C again. From the X-ray analyses of this series of tests, Specimen Nos. III-1 to III-6, it is evident that a transition from C-15 structure at lower temperatures to the C-14 structure occurs at some temperature between 1550° and 1600°C.

(communication to the Secretary*). -We must keep in mind, in balancing the savings-to be anticipated by the most efficient combustion of gas, the best heat absorption by stoves or boilers, and by heat conservation of the thermal equivalent carried in. blast-furnace gas-against the cost in operation, maintenance, depreciation and interest charges of the equipment required to realize the savings, that in boilers and hot-blast stoves we are basing our economies upon two different, combustion phenomena. In a boiler, evaporating water at a heat efficiency of 70 per cent., approximately 47,550 B.t.u. is consumed per boiler horsepower. Taking the blast, furnace gas cited in the above paper, we are using about 38 ¾ lb. of cold-washed gas per boiler horsepower. Using the hot-cleaned gas, the same equivalent heat is furnished by 34 1b. of the gas , This leaves of the 38 ¾ lb. required in the case of cold-washed gas, 4 ¾ lb. or 6,650 B.t.u. available for raising more steam when dry-hot gas is used, which means that an equivalent amount of coal firing can be dispensed with. Per ton of iron, this figure 2/3 X 12,000/38.75 X 4.75 = 980 lb. gas or 1,372,000 B.t.u. or 100 lb. coal. At $1.50 per ton of coal, the net saving per ton of pig iron produced by the use of dry-hot over wet-cold cleaning will, therefore, be about $0.06 2/3. At a stove heating 8,500 lb. of air per toil iron from 150° F., one-quarter of the dry-hot cleaned gas, or 3,000 lb., would heat the air to 1,450° F. 3,000 X 1,400 X 0.70 = (8,500 X 0.255) = 1,300. The cold-wet gas would heat the same amount of air to 1,280° F. 3,000 X 1,225 X 0.70 = (8,500 X.0.255) = 1,130.

THE Colorado Plateau uranium province is in a mining boom rivaling the most colorful days of the early West. The application of scientific skills and the use of modern and novel mechanical equipment, however, is unique. No metal has ever received such concentrated effort from geologists and mining engineers. Moreover, no other metal has had the variety of tools available for finding and mining ores. Radiation detection equipment, bull- dozers, truck-mounted wagon and core drills, jeeps, airplanes, helicopters, tractor loaders, self -propelled 3-wheeled dump cars, front-end loaders and fleets of modern trucks are some of the present-day tools of the uranium prospector and miner. Because uranium is so vital to our national defense, the Atomic Energy Commission has offered many incentives for its mining. Through a series of circulars, the AEC has established base price schedules and various incentive payments. The incentive payments for acceptable ores from domestic mines are: (1) a guaranteed base price of $3.50 per Ib for ores assaying 0.20 pct U3O8 and more; (2) premiums based on grades above 0.20 pct U3O8 as for example, ores assaying above 0.50 pct U3O8 receive $1.00 per lb premium; (3) a development allowance of 506 per Ib of U3O8 contained in ores assaying over 0.10 pct U3O8 (4) an ore haulage allowance of 64 a ton mile for a maximum of 100 miles; and (5) an initial production bonus which may amount to as much as $35,000 in addition to all other payments. The producers have been guaranteed this policy until Feb. 28, 1957. The other four will continue until April 1962.

The following tables showing the output of coal during the year 1913 have been secured y R. H. Morris, of Pocahontas, Alberta, Canada, for the use of the Committee through the kindness of John T. Stirling, Chief Mine-Inspector of Alberta. The principal mining districts are, Crow&apos;s Nest Pass, Calgary, Lethbridge, and Edmonton, the outputs from which were as follows: Tons Crow&apos;s Nest Pass 1,849,435 Calgary...: 627,461 Lethbridge ; 966,020 Edmonton 863,430 Total 4,306,346 Of this quantity there was exported to the United States, principally from the Crow&apos;s Nest Pass district, 138,201 tons of 2,000 lb., that being the ton used throughout the Province. This production consisted of lignite, bituminous coal, anthracite, coking coal and coal used in making. briquettes, as follows: Tons "Lignite coal" (lignitic?) 1,763,225 Bituminous coal 2,374,401 Anthracite coal 168,720 Coking coal 104,012 Coke produced 65,167 Briquettes produced 130,861 The only district in which coke was made is the Crow&apos;s Nest Pass district, and the entire product was consumed in Canada. INTRODUCTION ISOTHERMAL transformation, or "austempering," of a carbon-containing austenite at elevated temperatures yields so-called "intermediate products." Their structure and properties are, for a given hardness, rather different from those of "tempered martensite" obtained on conventional quenching and tempering.1 Several investigators2,3 have found that for high carbon and slightly alloyed steels the intermediate products formed at temperatures close to that of the martensite reaction possess strength properties superior to those of tempered martensite. The structure of these low temperature, intermediate products is generally acicular (bainite) but clearly different from that of martensite. However, at higher austempering temperatures, between 1000 and 1300°F (540 and 700°C) carbon steels were found to exhibit a rather low ductility.4-5 Thus notch bar tensile tests showed the ratio between notch strength and regular tensile strength to decrease with increasing austempering temperature. For ductilities below a few percent this notch strength ratio is a measure of ductility, according to investigations on low alloy steels.6-7 Furthermore the presence of intermediate products formed unintentionally on quenching was considered as responsible for the low ductility and impact energy of some heat treated steels.8 These intermediate products could result from partial transformation at the so-called "nose-temperature" where the rate of the transformation is a maximum. Tempering improved such mixtures of martensite and intermediate products, their properties approaching those of tempered martensite of equal hardness. The following investigation constitutes an attempt to determine certain strength properties of a partially austempered and subsequently quenched low alloy steel, namely, a chromium steel (SAE 5140). The structures formed by such a treatment should consist of a mixture of intermediate products formed on austempering and a martensite formed on oil quenching from the austempering temperature. It was intended, by varying the austempering time, to vary the quantity of the intermediate products between zero and 100 pct. The austempering temperature of 860°F was selected after extensive preliminary tests close to the nose-temperature. Austempering at this temperature yielded an acicular intermediate product. Additional tests under less exacting conditions were made for an austempering temperature of 950°F where the intermediate product appeared to be very fine pearlite. Results of single-blow bit-tooth impact tests on saturated rocks under elevated confining pressures and zero pore pressure were reported in a previous publication.1 This paper presents an extension of the earlier work to include a study of crater formation during tooth impact on both gas- and liquid-saturated Berea and Bandera sandstones at elevated confining and pore pressures. The basic data obtained were force-time, displacement-time, velocity-time and force-displacement curves during crater formation. Crater volume was also measured and the mode of crater formation determined. Bit tooth geometry, depth of penetration and velocity of impact were held constant. Results indicate that, with pore fluid present in the rock, failure trends from brittle to ductile as pore pressure is increased at constant confining pressure (pore pressure and borehole pressure were equal) For a given rock type, the mode of crater formation was dependent not only upon the nominal effective stress, but also upon the fluid which saturated the rock pore space. When confining pressure and pore pressure were equal (zero nominal effective stress), bit-tooth impact resulted in brittle failure for nitrogen-saturated Berea, and brittle to transitional failure for nitrogen-saturated Bandera; when saturated with liquid both rocks failed in a ductile manner at zero nominal effective stress. INTRODUCTION Dynamic wedge penetration tests have been conducted by investigators in several fields, but the failure mechanism of rock under dynamic stresses is not understood completely. The complex action of drilling bits, even considering the action of a single tooth, may be considered as a combination of drag bit and rolling cutter action. Thus, as a first step in understanding rock breakage in oil well drilling, single chisel impact and rock planing are of fundamental importance. For example, Gray 2 and Crisp3 studied drag bit cutting action at brittle stress states. Simon4 and Hartman5 studied the reaction of rocks to vertical impact by means of drop tests. The depth of penetration, crater volume and force-vs-time curves during crater formation were observed. The significance of indexing single-bit impacts has been noted.4,6-8 Gamer et al,9 reported impact tests on impermeable Leuders limestone at atmospheric and elevated confining pressures. In all cases the tests were accomplished on dry rock and pore pressure was considered to be zero. The importance of both confining pressure and pore pressure on the failure characteristics of rock was described. 10-12 It was found that the yield strength and ductility of porous rock depend on the state of stress under which the sample is tested. The importance of pore pressure on drilling rate in microbit experiments was noted by Cumingham and Eenink. l3 Robinson 12 also pointed out that in drilling the most important parameter in rock failure is the effective stress, where effective suess is defined as confining pressure pc minus pore pressure pp. The effect of pore pressure and confining pressure on rock strength was also noted by Serdengecti and Boozer 14 in strain rate tests, and by Gardner, Wyllie and Droschackl5 in elastic wave studies. Until recently all reported wedge impact studies under simulated wellbore stress states have been conducted on dry rock. Maurer 16 reported impact tests on samples saturated with deaerated water. Borehole and formation fluid pressures were equal in these tests except when mud was used in the borehole. With mud in the borehole and a high borehole-to-formation fluid pressure differential. Maurer observed "pseudoplastic" crater formation. Podio and Grayl reported impact tests on Berea and Bandera sandstone saturated with pore fluids having wide ranges in viscosities. THIS paper. will present the results of our studies on the kinetics of the gas phase reactions of co-lumbium and tantalum with O2, N2 and H2. Studies on zirconium and titanium have been previously reported.9,11 Due to their high melting points and their many excellent physical and chemical properties, colurn-bium and tantalum have been finding their places as useful metals in science and industry. Chemically the metals are very inert to gas and liquid phase corrosion at room temperature. However, at moderate temperatures of 250°C and higher the metals react readily with oxygen and hydrogen. It is of interest to study the gas phase reactions of these metals for the following reasons: (1) to compare the rates of the several reactions with those of other metals and to correlate the rate data with theory and structure predictions, (2) to add basic information on the practical difficulties of the reduction, refining and working of columbium and tantalum, (3) to anticipate new uses for the metals and (4) to understand the role that the metals play as components in high temperature alloys. Literature Survey A number of papers exist in the literature on the gas phase reactions of columbium and tantalum with O2, N2 and H2; however, only fragmentary data have been reported on the kinetics of these reactions. Although the free energy of formation of the oxide Ta2O520at 25°C has been determined and some thermodynamic work has been reported on columbium and its oxides, the data are not sufficient to make equilibria calculations at elevated temperatures. Oxidation: 1. Kinetics: The rate of oxidation of columbium and tantalum has been studied by McAdam and Geil23 using the interference color method. Tantalum is reported to oxidize more slowly than columbium, zirconium and iron. The amounts of oxidation of columbium after 20 hr in air for several temperatures are reported by the Fansteel Metallurgical Corporation.36 Columbium starts to oxidize in air at about 200°C. The oxide is said to be adherent and prevents further oxidation until the temperature is raised. Columbium is reported not to become brittle on heating in air for short periods like tantalum because the oxide film prevents further reaction. The columbium oxides dissolve into the metal when heated in a vacuum at temperatures between red heat and 1200°C. Above 1200°C the oxides are reported to evaporate. Columbium, in the oxide free state, is an active getter in vacuum tubes. 2. Preparation and Structure: G. Grube, O. Kuba-schewski and K. Zwiauer15 have studied the decomposition of Cb2O5 in argon. They find that CbO2 is formed slowly at 1150° and rapidly at 1300°C. Cb2O5 can be reduced to CbO2 by moist H2. The reduction of this dioxide to the lower oxides is rapid. By varying conditions CbO2, Cb2O3, CbO and Cb2O can be formed. CbO2, CbO and Cb2O have independent lattices while Cb2O3 is a stoichiometric mixture of CbO and CbO2. In a later paper O. Kuba-schewski" has shown that CbO is cubic and that CbO2 has a rutile type of lattice. The most exhaustive work on the oxides of columbium is that of G. Brauer.8 The number and constitution of the solid phases in the binary system Cb-O were investigated by the preparative, analytical and X ray methods. INTRODUCTION Chingola Division of Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines Limited is situated in the Copper- belt of Zambia, approximately 30 kilometres south of the border with Zaire. It is the country&apos;s leading producer of copper and its principal foreign exchange earner, and has been, in its time, the largest single copper producer in the British Commonwealth and the second largest in the world. There are two &apos;primary&apos; copper sources at the Division, namely Underground producing approximately 100 000 tonnes of contained copper annually, and the Open Pits, producing approximately 200 000 tonnes annually. Following the commissioning of the Tailings Leach Plant in 1974, treating final tailings, metallurgical recovery increased from approximately 70% to in excess of 80%. Extensive deposits of cobalt are present and following the rise in the market price in 1979 and 1980, plans were made to extract this separately. Cobalt production commenced in 1980 from Underground and will increase substantially when the Open Pit cobalt reserves become available in approximately 2 years time. This paper covers the development of the production method of the principal Underground Orebody, known as the Lower Orebody, and the control systems applied to it. HISTORY The Lower Orebody, formerly known as the Nchanga West Orebody, was discovered by extensive Diamond Drilling operations in the late 1920&apos;s. Development of the Shaft complex and the orebody commenced and continued until 1931 when flooding from development on the 480 foot horizon necessitated closure. The mine remained closed until 1937 and production commenced from the Lower Orebody in 1939. Various expansion schemes of the Metallurgical Plants and the Underground workings were completed over the years with the result that Underground production increased steadily to in excess of 150 000 tonnes copper annually in the 1960&apos;s. In recent years production has levelled out at slightly less than 100 000 tonnes annually. This decrease is as a result of producing from a lower grade reserve, available within a more limited production front, and the application of production constraints in the light of experience gained. GEOLOGY Within the Nchanga Mining Licence Area of Chingola Division, there are a total of 14 known copper orebodies in the basal part of a thick succession of sediments of Pre-Cambrian age. The sediments rest on a Basement Complex of granites, gneisses and schists. Three superimposed stratiform orebodies, known locally as the Lower, Intermediate and Upper Orebodies, occur over a vertical interval of approximately 150m. Current annual copper production is approximately 300 000 tonnes. The ore originates from four different mining operations, one Underground mine and three Open Pits. Approximately 9 million tonnes of ore grading between 3 and 3.5% copper are milled annually. The two largest sources of ore, the Under- ground mine and the Nchanga Open Pit are on the gently dipping south limb of the Nchanga Syncline (Figure 1). In the Nchanga Open Pit the major source of ore is the Upper Orebody with lesser tonnages from the Intermediate and Lower Orebodies. In the Underground mine the Lower Orebody is the only orebody being mined, underground mining of the Upper Orebody being suspended for economic reasons in 1978. The typical stratigraphic column is illust- rated in the legend on Figure 1. The footwall rocks comprise either Nchanga Red Granite or the Arkose formation, both of which are hard competent rocks, offering generally good mining conditions for footwall development. Copper mineralisation of the Lower Orebody extends from the upper part of the Arkose to the top of the Lower Banded Shales. Overlying the Arkose is the Transition zone (0-18111 in thickness). The Transition zone comprise a lower member, Transitional Arkose, consisting of incoherent kaolinised sandstone, and an upper member, Transitional Lower Banded Shales consisting of normally soft bleached and silicified shale. Most early development and application of electromagnetic prospecting methods took place in Scandinavia, where geological conditions favor their use. In other parts of the world these methods have aroused cycles of interest, but in Scandinavia they have been used continuously and successfully since the 1920&apos;s. Electromagnetic methods may be classified into two general groups. One group includes methods in which the source of the electromagnetic field remains stationary while the receivers are moved about to explore the area. The other includes procedures in which the energizing and receiving systems are moved together. Other classifications could be based on the size of the energizing source, the particular components of the electromagnetic field which are measured, or the mode of transporting the equipment. The difference between fixed-source and moving-source methods, however, is of such great fundamental importance that it will be emphasized in this discussion. FIXED-SOURCE METHODS Essentially, a fixed-source method consists of the measurement of electromagnetic fields about the source. The mutual coupling between the source and the earth is constant, but the mutual coupling between the receiver and the earth (unless the earth is homogeneous) and also between the source and the receiver changes at each station. The results are usually normalized by relating the field data to the calculated free space or primary field. Turam and Radio Reference Signal Methods: The turam or two-frame* (see Fig. 1A) is probably * Turam means two-coil. the most common fixed-source method. The energizing source is an insulated cable grounded at both ends or formed into a large rectangular loop. Measurements are taken along a traverse at 5 to 50-meter intervals using two small receiving coils, the lagging coil being placed at the position previously occupied by the leading coil. The complex ratio (i.e., inphase and out-of-phase ratios) of the voltages induced in the two coils is measured. Operating frequency range is about 100 to 800 cps. In a typical turam survey a straight, grounded cable several kilometers long is laid out parallel to the probable strike of the ore deposits or conducting strata being sought. An area extending 1 or 2 km on each side of the cable, and within 1 or 2 km of the ends of the cable, is surveyed. Measurements are made at stations 5 to 25 m apart along traverses perpendicular to the cable. Measurements may be made along lines parallel to the cable to serve as base lines for the traverses or for other special purposes. Commonly the receiving coils are oriented with their planes horizontal so that only the vertical component of the field is measured. If additional information is required, one of the hori- zontal components may also be measured by orienting the coils with their planes vertical. In a modified turam technique developed recently for both ground and airborne measurements (Fig. 1B) the amplitude of the complex voltage induced in a single receiving coil is measured and its phase compared with that of a reference signal transmitted from the energizing system by a radio frequency carrier. Thus the un-normalized field is obtained directly, whereas with the turam method it is obtained by calculation from the ratios. The turam method and its modifications have a greater working depth than the other electromagnetic procedures used in ore prospecting. Under favorable conditions conductors have been located at depths of 200 to 300 m. A modified turam method with one of the electrodes grounded in the upper end of a plunging orebody was used to follow the extension of this body to a depth of 200 m beneath a layer of conducting schists. Straight grounded cables are usually preferred to insulated loops because they are easier to lay out and because they often make the method more sensitive. The greater sensitivity of a grounded cable is a result of ground return currents which may flow in the orebodies in addition to the eddy currents caused by induction from the current in the cable. Anomalies in the vertical field due to eddy currents are characterized by a correspondence between high values for the inphase component and positive out-of-phase components and/or low values for the inphase component and negative out-of-phase components. Also the inphase component may approach zero, but it does not become negative. In very long continuous conductors that are parallel to a grounded cable the effect of ground return currents may far exceed the effect of eddy currents. These ground return currents cause a lack of correspondence between the inphase and out-of-phase components and may cause negative inphase or anti-phase components. It becomes difficult to carry out the measurements and often difficult to interpret the results. Such results immediately suggest the presence of graphitic strata, however, since ore deposits are rarely extensive enough to accumulate sufficient ground return current to cause these results. A cable laid out perpendicular to the strike or an insulated loop is sometimes used in areas where graphitic schists and slates are present. Anomalies are then completely or almost entirely due to eddy currents and are easier to interpret. The measured voltage ratios are normalized by either subtracting or dividing by normal field ratios calculated from free space considerations. The normalized ratios are then plotted as individual profiles. When significant anomalies occur in the ratio measurements, the actual normalized fields are calculated by beginning with a measured or an assumed value for the field at a point near the cable and successively multiplying this value by the normalized ratios. There is a similarity between this process and a numerical integration of the ratio curve. Conversely, in many respects the ratio curve is similar to the first derivative of the field curve.

SOLUTION of a solid metal or alloy in a molten metal bath is used daily in melting operations, extractive metallurgical processes, and in brazing. It is generally recognized that temperature, time, agitation, and the composition of the solute metal and the solvent bath all affect solution rate. However, there is little information available in the literature on the kinetics of the process or the relative effect that these variables have on solution rate. In connection with an aluminum brazing study, data on the solution of aluminum in an A1-Si* bath to promote rapid solidification. The chemical analyses were made on drillings taken from the cast plates. The results of this work are listed in Table I. The thermal-analysis data were obtained on 200 gram samples cooled at approximately 1.5" per min. A calibrated chromel-alumel couple was used. The thermal arrests were recorded autographically on a General Electric photoelectric potentiometer recorder. The instrument was calibrated to 22.5 pct. The thermal emf was bucked with a Leeds and Northrup semiprecision potentiometer so that 1 mv represented the full scale of the GE recorder. Referring to Table I, it will be noted that the analytical results tend to be lower than the intended compositions by about 0.3 pct Si in the higher ranges. In view of the known difficulties in obtaining accurate silicon determinations by wet analysis when the silicon content is high and in view of the care that was employed in weighing and preparing the alloys, the intended compositions are believed to be more accurate than the analyses. Furthermore, when the thermal-arrest data are plotted against the intended compositions, a smooth curve is obtained, as shown in Fig. 1. This is not the case when the data are plotted against the analytical results. It will be noted from Table I that the 12.5 pct Si alloy (melt 4) showed a primary arrest at 577.6"C and the eutectic at 576.l°C. The metallographic examination of this chill-cast plate sample showed a small amount of primary silicon. These results, Fig. 1, place the eutectic at slightly less than 12.5 pct Si and are in rather good agreement with the unpublished Hanford data. In all of the subsequent work, the composition of the A1-Si dipping baths was determined by thermal analysis (spread between the primary arrest and the eutectic temperature) employing 12.5 pct Si and 577.2 °C as the composition and temperature of the eutectic. Material Preparation and Selection of the Techniques: At the beginning of this work, it was anticipated that, owing to oxide film present on the surface of the aluminum, difficulty would be encountered in obtaining rapid uniform wetting of aluminum specimens dipped in the A1-Si bath. The following etchants were investigated as possible methods of providing a thin uniform oxide film on the specimen surface: 1—phosphoric acid (H³O4), 2—fluoboric acid (HBFI), 3—sodium hydroxide (NaOH), and 4—hydrofluoric acid (HF). Tests with sheet .specimens (2x½x0.06 in.) of 2s aluminum prepared with these etchants indicated that the fast uniform wetting required for this work could not be obtained if any oxide film existed on the specimen surface. The object of the writer is to call attention to a rather unique aggregation of economic products distributed over a line of succeeding formations about 3 mi. long, to be seen within a few miles of La Salle, Ill. Fig. 1 is an ideal section of the stratification exposed and exploited along a distance of 3 1/5 mi. in a southwesterly direction from the quarry of the Utica Hydraulic Cement Co. located near the historic site of Kaskaskia village to the Oglesby shaft at Oglesby. No attempt has been made to cover the whole field, special mention only being made (with the exception of two places) of the operations found along the course or parallel to the direction assumed in the ideal section. I have used Fig. 2, after J. R. Bent and De Witt Kelly, to locate the relation of the La Salle anticline to the coal mines of this district and to show the operation of No. 1 and 3 mincs of the Illinois Zinc Co. Anticline and the Rock Formations Owing to the structural deformation between La Salle and Utica, the older rocks of the state are exposed to the surface along the northern embankment and the bottoms of the Illinois River valley near the latter place. At; the Illinois Zinc Co. works, Sec. 16, Tp. 33, R 1, a well for water mas sunk 1828 ft. and samples taken every 10 ft. of the ground penetrated; duplicates were sent to Mr. Cady of the Illinois Geological Survey. A general compilation or synopsis study of this section is here presented. As the well is over 1 mi. west of the Western limb of the anticline, the section affords some reliable data. These samples were studied and interpreted by H. M. DuBois as Lower Magnesian, and by G. H. Cady as the Lower Magnesian. The results are given in Fig. 3. The most interesting geological feature of this district is the La Salle anticline. In 1865, Leo les Quereux, looking at Split Rock, asked how it happened that the upper coal measures overlie strata of the Lower Silurian and what has become of the formations which are generally found intermediate—the Upper Silurian, the Devonian and sub-carboniferous, and the lower member of the coal measures?
