An equation has been derived for use in calculating the sandface pressure of flowing gas wells in which the variation of the compressibility factor of the gas with pressure is taken into consideration. This variation due to compressibility has been put into both graphical and tabular form. Comparison of calculated results with field measured results were made on 20 dry gas wells from a given field and 11 distillate wells from different fields. The agreement between calculated and observed results is good. In addition to their use in the calculation of sandface pressures of flowing wells, the factors can be used in the direct calculation of the static bottom hole pressure of gas wells, the capacity of gas transmission lines, and in the calculation of the theoretical isothermal horsepower necessary to compress a natural gas. Examples demonstrating the use of various equations are given. INTRODUCTION Many of the equations used to calculate the sandface pressures of flowing gas wells from well head data do not take into consideration rigorously the deviation of the natural gas from ideal gas behavior. CALCULATION OF SANDFACE PRESSURE OF FLOWING GAS WELLS The starting point in the derivation of any specific flow equation is an energy balance on the fluid flowing between any two points in the system. Experiments on latent hardening were peyformed by compressing single crystals along a direction perpendicular to the tension axis. The slope and length of easy glide in the tension test were found to depend only on prior deformation in the same slip plane. Prior deformation on a different slip plane changes the stress level of the resulting stress-strain curve. The yield points appearing upon reloading after prior extension and unloading were related to the end of easy glide. SEVERAL researchers have studied the latent hardening due to deformation of a crystal by slip on a slip System after prior deformation. These experiments can be divided into those in which the prior deformation was on the same plane as the subsequent and those in which the two deformation processes were in different planes. In the former category are the experiments of Buckley and Entwistle,1 Parker and washburn,2 and Haasen and Kelly.3 The latter case has not been studied systematically; it was the main purpose of this investigation to produce this type of latent hardening and explain the results in terms of the existing theories of work hardening. In general, tension producing slip on a certain slip system can be preceded by tension, transverse compression or longitudinal compression, each with predictable dislocation movement and intersection. The intersection of dislocations can lead to glissile or sessile jogs, Cottrell-Lomer locks and other sessile dislocations. The effect on the stress-strain curve could depend on which combination of the former mechanisms is operating. Haasen and Kelly3 have studied the yield points which occur in aluminum and nickel single crystals upon reloading after prior unloading in a tension experiment. They attributed this effect to the anchoring of dislocations occurring during unloading. As Cottrell and stokes4 have shown that dislocations cutting through the "forest" could only lead to reversible changes, they attributed the anchoring to the formation of sessile dislocations during unloading. However, different kinds of sessile dislocations could be formed during unloading, and it was the purpose of this experiment to determine whether Cottrell-Lomer locks are responsible for the yield effect and for the end of easy glide. The case where a longitudinal compression is followed by tension along the same axis is commonly referred to as a Bauschinger test. This type of effect was studied by Buckley and Entwistle1 on aluminum single crystals and by Parker and washburn2 on zinc single crystals. In such a test, the tension and the compression activate the same slip plane with opposite slip directions. The use of sideways compression in the present experiments permits the activation of different types of slip systems and the study of their effect on the easy glide region and on the transition between the elastic and easy glide region. The theory of seeger5 for the flow stress in fee materials is applied to explain the latent hardening. EXPERTMENTAL PROCEDURE All the single crystals used in this investigation had an axial orientation close to <210>, called the "0.5" orientation. This is the orientation for which the tensile axis is 45 deg from both the slip plane and the slip direction. The single crystals were grown from the melt under a helium atmosphere using milled graphite boats,=at a rate of 8.6 mm per min. The silver used in the experiment was 99.98 pct pure. The single crystals had a square cross section about 0.9 by 0.9 cm and a length of 14 cm. The orientation of the specimen was determined within ±2 deg by the Laue back-reflection method. The specimens were annealed at 940&apos; ± 2°C in a helium atmosphere for 24 hr and then furnace cooled over a period of 7 hr. The specimens were electropolished in a solution of 9 pct KCN in water. The specimens were tested in a soft-type tensile machine (the load is prescribed) up to 3 pct strain. The stress was increased continuously at approximately 30 g per mm2 per min. The strain was measured over a 5 cm gage length with a mechanical extensometer employing an optical lever. The strain and stress were measured with accuracies of i 2 X 10-5 and ± 2 g per mm2, respectively. The remainder of the stress-strain curve up to 20 pct strain was obtained in a hard-type tensile machine (the strain rate is prescribed). The strain and the stress were measured in that machine with an accuracy of ±2 pct. The compression tests were performed in the hard-type machine using accurately machined steel blocks without lubrication. The blocks were used so as to apply a uniform compression over a length of 13 cm. The strains were measured on the hard-type machine and with a micrometer.

THE Pittsburgh is one of the most important coal beds of Ohio. It was the last of the great coal beds to be worked extensively in that State, has the largest area of virgin coal, and will in all probability be the last of the great deposits to be exhausted. The line of outcrop sweeps nearly southwest in a sinuous line from Jefferson County on the north to Lawrence on the south, a distance on a bee-line of at least 150 miles. (Fig. 1.) The maximum width of the area under which this coal is due is about 55 miles, but in most places it is less than half that and in the two southern counties it is in places restricted to narrow ridges. The large deposits form three separate areas, which, in order of their importance, are generally known as (1) the Belmont, (2) the Federal Creek, and (3) the Gallia fields.

Many investigations have shown that the manganese enhances the deoxidation power of silicon. Here it is suggested that this phenomenon could be explained in terms of the formation of impure silica. Data of Hilty and Crafts on the Fe-Mn-Si-O System has been evaluated on the basis of the reaction S_i + 20 = (SiO2) where (SiO2) denotes silica of variable activity. The activity of silica in this system is a function of aMn/aSi and the temperature, and can be described by the equation 12700 l°gaSiOz = -6.85+ - - 0.5 log aMn /asi PRACTICAL melting experience has shown that it is helpful to maintain a certain range of Mn/Si ratio in deoxidizing quality alloy steels. Herty,1 as early as 1932, reported a strong association between manganese and silicon as did schenck2 and Korber and Oelsen3 in later work. More recently, Hilty and crafts4 have studied the solubility of oxygen in the Fe-Si-O system, both with and without manganese. Their study confirmed the marked ability of manganese to increase the deoxidizing power of silicon. This phenomenon has remained unexplained in the liter,ature5 since it has been shown that manganese has virtually no influence on the activity coefficients of silicon or oxygen.= In this paper, an explanation for the role of manganese is suggested and equations are devised for quantitatively describing this influence. DISCUSSION Hilty and crafts4 equilibrated their melts under an argon atmosphere and the system established equilibrium with a self-generated slag which was not always the oxide of lowest free energy. This method con- sists of pressing and subsequently sintering an intimate mixture of iron powder and gaphite in a suitable atmosphere to Produce a steel. Two types of iron Powder have been studied, electrolytic and reduced. The sinkring of mixtures of loose Car-bonyf iron and carbon black for several hours at I000 to 1100 C. (1830&apos; to 2010°F.), followed by forging of the resultant ingots to bars, has been studied by Offermann.&apos; TrailZ has reported on the properties of hydrogen-reduced and electrolytic iron powders, both containing 0.5 per cent carbon. Methods for making steel bodies by powder metallurgy have also been sug- gested by Goetzel13 who recommends the addition of steel powder of well-defined carbon content to pure iron powder, and Volterra,~ who suggests compaction and subsequent sintering of a mixture of steel powder, iron oxide and iron powder. Experiments were conducted to determine the quantity and purity of ultraclean anthracite that could be prepared in the laboratory, using conventional separating techniques. A low, a medium, and a high-volatile anthracite were studied. Specific gravity separation followed by grinding, screening, and refloating at lighter specific gravities yielded small quantities of material purified to 1.0% ash, as follows: from low-volatile anthracite, 0.7%; from medium-volatile coal, 1.0%; and from high-volatile coal, 2.3%. The reduction in ash had no appreciable effect on the volatile matter or sulfur content of the coal. The limited quantities of material containing 1.0% or less ash obtainable indicate that if ultraclean coal is desired, a practical approach should include the processing units as an integral part of a convc.ntiona1 dense-media washing plant. Anthracite preparation practices during much of the industry&apos;s history were geared to maximum recovery of the larger sizes, pea through egg, which were used in hand-fired, domestic furnaces. Those sizes were cleaned to meet trade requirements, and the smaller sizes were usually higher in ash content. The impression, thus, was that ash content of anthracite always increased as the sizes got smaller. It was presumed that it was impossible to wash the finer sizes to extremely low ash contents. Following World War 11, the classical domestic market began to decline and the finer sizes assumed an increasingly large share of the market. For example, in 1949l 61% of the production was still pea and larger. Fig. l2 shows that -by 1955 these sizes accounted for only 50%, and in 1965, they were only 39% of the total anthracite produced. With the reduction in the market, increased quality was demanded, especially in export markets, and an increasing number of dense-media magnetite washers were installed in new and existing cleaning plants. In 1965, the coarse coal prepared at 59 breakers in the anthracite fields was sampled by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM); approximately 50% of these plants were equipped with dense-media magnetite washers.3 Since 1950, more attention has been focused on the use of finer sizes for numerous industrial uses, including iron-ore sintering, pelletizing, foundry coke-making, cement manufacture, production of calcium carbide, and of carbon electrodes, etc. Most industrial uses require relatively clean anthracite, such as 10 to 11% ash for sintering and foundry coke, 7% for aluminum melting-pot cathode carbon, and 5% for carbide production. Hence, cleaning methods have been improved to the extent that dense-media washers, hydraulic cyclones, and flotation cells have been introduced as fine-coal-cleaning devices. It is now possible to wash the buckwheat, rice, and barley sizes (9116 X 3132-in.) to ash contents as low as 8 to 10% in dense-media devices, but washing the -3132-in. sizes to those limits presents more difficult problems, due mainly to the fineness of the material. This USBM investigation was conducted to determine the amount and purity of ultraclean anthracite that could be prepared in the laboratory, using conventional separating techniques. The goal was to reduce the ash content to a level acceptable for industrial carbon uses, including electrode manufacture, which generally requires an ash content of 1% or less. While low-ash content is of primary importance in selecting industrial carbons, the amounts of other constituents are also important, including iron, silicon, titanium, nickel, vanadium, and sulfur. They were not considered in this work, since their occurrence in deashed anthracite has been studied elsewhere.4 The results of the present investigation were used to design a flowsheet, suggesting a method for producing ultraclean anthracite as part of conventional preparation practice, using dense-media vessels, crushers, pulverizers,

Copper cementation was studied from both thermodynamic and kinetic aspects. The temperature effect of copper cementation, which has been recognized as an anomalous result, and the rate enhancement phenomenon observed after the initial linear step are, in particular, focused in this work. The main results obtained are as follows; 1) Free energy changes of copper cementation reactions, calculated by the use of the "Correspondence Principle" of Criss and Cobble are rather insensitive to temperature. 2) A Flow-cell assembly consisting of a special cupric ion electrode, a calomel electrode and a potentiometer is particularly useful for the continuous measurements of copper cementation rate. 3) Two first-order reaction rate constants for the CU2+- Fe system were successfully determined by the use of the flow-cell assembly. 4) Activation energies determined for the initial rate and the 9 maximum rate of CU2+ - Fe system are both 4.6 kcal/mole. This fact suggests that the mechanisms of the initial reaction and the final reaction are essentially the same and both reactions are rate controlled by the diffusion in a boundary layer. The difference in the rate constants of them may fie explained by the effect of the nature of surface deposits. 5) Qualitative explanation of the rate enhancement phenomenon from the initial rate was successfully made by applying Bockris "Penetration Model."

The microstructure of dispersion-strengthened aluminum aluminum-oxide products containing from 0.2 to 4.7 wt pct of aluminum oxide has been examined by optical and transmission electron microscopy, and the flow stress has been determined at room temperature and at 400C by tensile testing. Products were examined as recrystallized and as high-temperature extruded, and the microstructures consisted of a fine dispersion of oxide particles in a matrix divided by respectively recrystallized grain boundaries and subgrain boundaries. The flow stress (0.2 pct offset) at room temperature of recrystallized dispersion strengthened aluminum aluminum-oxide products is the superposition of dispersion strengthening and grain boundary strengthening. This superposition has been found to be linear. The flow stress (a) can be related to the grain size (t) by the Petch equation: ing content of oxide and k is a constant independent of the oxide content. For extruded products a similar relation has been found by replacing the grain size by the subgrain size. The k-value is of the same order for the two types of structure, which shows that the subgrain boundaries are as effective slip barriers as grain boundaries. Tensile testing at 400C of re-crystallized and extruded products shows that oxide dispersion strengthening is very effective, whereas the strengthening effect of grain boundaries and subgrain boundaries is small. THE microstructure of dispersion-strengthened products consists of hard particles finely distributed in a metal matrix. The strengthening effect of the dispersed phase has been fairly well established,1 and it has been found that the size and volume fractions of the dispersed particles are important structural parameters. However, in many dispersion-strengthened products which have been worked and heat-treated during manufacture the matrix is divided into well-defined grains or sub-grains, which may also have a strengthening effect. A model of the matrix strengthening in dispersed products worked during manufacture has been proposed,2 introducing the energy of the structure as a strengthening factor, especially at low temperatures. A difficulty in this model is, however, to relate this (stored) energy to the structural parameters directly observable as for instance grain size. The strengthening effect of the matrix grain size after recrystallization has been in- vestigated for nickel-thoria (TD-Nickel) products3 and for copper aluminum-oxide products. Conclusive results were, however, not obtained as the grain size of TD-nickel was constant. 5 to II , after recrystallization at temperatures from 700 to 1200°C and as the copper products containing 5 to 1 wt pct of aluminum oxide could not be recrystallized even after severe cold reduction and heat treatment at 1050C. For aluminum aluminum-oxide products containing from 1 to 5 wt pct of aluminum oxide it has been shown that the tensile strength at room temperature decreases when an extruded product is cold-worked and recrystallized. The matrix in the extruded products is divided into well-defined subgrains of micron size, and as the grain size of the recrystallized products is about two orders of magnitude higher, it is obvious that grain boundary strengthening occurs. Preliminary results8 have indicated that the flow stress containing no grain boundaries, A is a constant and t is the subgrain size. At elevated temperatures the effect of boundaries is more complex; it has been shown11 that recrystallized products having an oxide content of about 3 wt pct are more creep resistant than extruded material in the temperature range 400° to 600°C, whereas on application of a higher strain rate the tensile flow stress (0.2 pct offset) is higher in extruded than in recrystallized aluminum—5 wt pct aluminum oxide products at temperatures from room temperature to 427°C (800), Finally it has been shown12 that the Brinell hardness at 350°C of extruded products having about the same content of aluminum oxide increases with decreasing grain size, determined by X-ray line-width measurements. The present study was undertaken to obtain a quantitative relationship between the tensile strength and the grain size of aluminum aluminum-oxide products in the recrystallized as well as in the extruded state. The tensile testing was performed at room temperature and at 400uC. The grain size of the recrystallized products was varied by changing the degree of cold-work preceding the recrystallization heat treatment. In extruded products grain (or subgrain) size variations were obtained by high-temperature heat treatment after extrusion. EXPERIMENTAL a) Materials. AMONG the European nations Germany is the center of interest economically as well as politically, and of prime importance for Europe as a whole is Germany&apos;s capacity to produce mineral products for armament and for export in exchange for the import of the essential supplies to maintain its industries. So far as minerals are concerned, Germany is worse off than any other great power except Italy, and deficiencies are being met by attempts to increase output from local deposits and by greater use of substitutes derived from domestic raw materials to replace imported metals, petroleum products, and other minerals.

Three borides of zirconium have been reported: ZrB,l ZrB2,2,3 and ZrB12, 4 The phase relationships, ranges of stability, and some physical properties of these compounds are described. THE zirconium borides differ considerably from one another, particularly with respect to their relative stabilities at high temperatures in the presence of carbon.4,5 ZrB2 is extremelv stable at all temperatures (to the melting point) in contact with carbon. Both ZrB and ZrB12 tend to decompose at elevated temperatures when carbon is present in excess of about 0.5 pct. ZrB forms ZrB2 and ZrC, and ZrB12 decomposes to form ZrB2 and a boron-carbide phase. In the ZrB12 preparation, boron present in excess of that needed to form ZrB2 reacts with carbon, if present, to form carbides, in preference to forming the higher boride. Similar instability of borides, other than diborides of the transition metals of the 4th and 5th groups of the periodic table, has been reported.5,6 special precautions had, therefore, to be taken to minimize carbon contamination in the preparation of ZrB and ZrB12. Reactions below 1400°C were carried out by heating powdered mixtures of zirconium hydride and boron in quartz tubes in a hydrogen atmosphere. For temperatures above 1400°C, reactions were carried out in graphite molds. Carbon contamination from the molds was minimized by employing extremely rapid heating rates to reduce carbon diffusion into the body of the specimen, and by subsequent "shaving" of sample surfaces that had been in contact with the graphite dies. A heating rate of about 2000°C per min was obtained by heating the dies (by direct conduction), using a current of 40,000 amp. Although this type of heating cycle apparently allowed little time for "homogenization," close approximations to equilibrium conditions were usually obtained as a result of the very strongly exothermic reactions between zirconium hydride and boron at elevated temperatures. Reproducibility of results in repeated runs under varying conditions was taken as a reasonable indication that equilibrium conditions had been effectively achieved. Quenching was accomplished by rapidly immersing the entire die, containing the reaction products, in water. Specimens could also be cooled at controlled rates by adjustment of the rate of flow of water through the water-cooled copper electrodes in contact with the graphite dies.

The change in shape of the void in a sirzterir~g copper mass has been investigated as a juntction of&apos; density. A serial sectioning&apos; technique was used to eoaltrate the irregular shape of the void at two levels qf density. A measure of the void size and configuration, the proximity number, is defined and used to describe the progress of void removal. The process of. void removal deduced front the observations of this study contrasts with current sintering models in that it takes into account the irregularity of structure of a sintering mass and demonstrates that isolated Porosity does not occur first as spherical pores, but as large, definitely nonspherical sections of the void void volume. The process of sintering, about which there is much practical and theoretical knowledge, has evaded a direct and thorough analysis despite the intensity with which it has been studied for 60 years or so. This is due, of course, to the complex structure of a sintering mass and the inability to observe directly the development of a fully dense solid from the initial particulate arrangement. Extensive theoretical analyses have been based on the adoption of one or another of several model systems, that is, by visualization and analysis of some sort of regular assembly or arrangement of geometric "particles" approximating the conditions of a sintering mass. It seems appropriate at this time to try to examine experimentally in some detail the extent to which a sintering mass of irregular particles dlffers from these models. Many models deal with neck growth and the initial stage of sintering and follow the direction established by ~ucz~nski&apos; in 1949 for the sintering of spheres to flat plates. Recently Johnson and cutler2 have adapted these models to sintering of powder masses. coble3 has presented a mathematical model for sintering that applies to the middle and final stages of the process. These papers, without exception, assume a regular geometry, generally spheres in contact in a regular array. Rhines~ and coworkers, however, are studying the sintering process by applying a model based on the topological concept of genus which permits them to consider an irregular structure. whites has described the various models with the exception of that of Rhines et al., and the assumptions on which they are based and their shortcomings. The present paper examines the geometric changes that occur in the powder mass during sintering by examination of the void. The method is to analyze a series of partially sintered structures and to propose from this analysis the sequence of events which occur in the removal of the void space as a sintering mass progresses from a collection of individual particles to a solid body. The irregular nature of the stacking of particles and of the particles themselves will be taken into account. The significant points derived from this study are: first, accurate reconstructions of the irregular void shapes are presented; second, it is clearly established that closed porosity occurs first as widespread volumes of interconnected porosity, definitely nonspherical in shape; and third, a new factor, the proximity number, is defined, which serves in this paper as a tool for describing the void shape changes observed, and which will be used in a later paper as part of the basis of a mathematical model for sintering. While the specific material studied is copper, the observations are thought to be relatively general as indicated by comparison of the results with partially sintered structures in other materials presented in the literature, both metallic and nonmetallic. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Four series of specimens representing progressive stages of the sintering process were prepared by sintering high-purity copper powder for various time periods. A relatively large particle size was used so that the void-solid interface could be readily distinguished at low magnification. In three series of specimens a loose stacking of particles was obtained by pouring powder into an alumina mold and lightly tapping the mold. The green density of such compacts was approximately 40 pct of theoretical density. Two of these three series utilized irregularly shaped particles in the size range -230 +325 mesh, one series sintered in vacuum and one in hydrogen at 950°C. The third series of loosely stacked particles consisted of spherical particles in the size range -270 +325 mesh, sintered in hydrogen at 950°C. A fourth series was prepared from compacted irregular particles sintered in hydrogen at 950°C. The specimens for this series were formed by lightly pressing the irregularly shaped particles in a steel die; the green density of the pressed pellets was approximately 60 pct. The irregularly shaped particles used in this study are shown in Fig. 1. The density of these particles, measured by a toluene picnometer technique, is 98.2 pct of theoretical density. Each particle is highly convoluted, and in some instances appears in cross section to contain internal porosity. The density measurement, however, indicates that completely enclosed porosity is very small so that the individual particles have a highly irregular surface but are essentially fully dense copper. Therefore, most of the void space that appears in two dimensions to be isolated within the particle is actually at the particle surface and connected to the external void in the dimension not included in the plane of the cross section. Using a new dternating-current potentiometer circuit and a specially designed four-terminal cell, the specific conductance of molten Cu2S-FeS mattes was measured as a function of temperature, from the liquidus to 1500°C, over the complete range of composition. The high conductivities, about 1500 ohm-I cm-l for FeS and 100 ohm-l cm-l for Cu,S, indicate that the conduction is electronic rather than ionic. Molten FeS has a negative temperature coefficient of specific conductance, resembling metallic conduction. Molten Cu,S has a positive temperature coefficient, resembling semiconduction. The binary roughly follows an additive rule of mixtures with respect to both magnitude and temperature coefficient of specific conductance. Metallic bonding in the liquid is postulated to explain these phenomena. MUCH has been learned in the past about the nature of liquids and the ionic or molecular species in solution by means of electrical measurements. Thus, dielectric constants&apos;,&apos;2 have given information about molecular liquids such as water and benzene. Measurements of dielectric constant usually are impossible in electrically conducting liquids, such as aqueous solutions of ionic salts and molten ionic salts. However, measurements of electrical conductance and ionic transference have provided much knowledge about the latter systems.a-" In recent years, the ionic nature of certain molten metallurgical slags has been established by Derge and Martin7 through electrical conductance and electrolysis measurements. Chipman, Inouye, and Tom-linsonq ave studied the electrical conductance of molten FeO and report a high specific conductance of about 200 ohm-&apos; cm-&apos; (compared with 4 ohm" cm-&apos; for an ordinary ionic liquid such as molten NaCl) and a positive temperature coefficient of conductance. They interpret these results in terms of p-type semiconduction by analogy to the situation in solid FeO.Y imnad and Derge" have studied cell efficiency in the electrolysis of molten FeO-SiO, systems and conclude that ordinary ionic conductance increases with SiO, content. Very recently, interest has been revived in the electrical conductance of liquid metals and liquid metallic solutions. Scala and Robertson1&apos; report a close resemblance between the liquid and solid states with respect to thermal, structural, and compositional relationships. Molten sulphides have not received a great deal of attention. Bornemann and von Rauschenplat" measured the specific conductance of molten Cu2S as a function of temperature with a four-terminal cell using direct current. A high specific conductance and a positive temperature coefficient were found in that investigation." Using a two-electrode apparatus, Savelsberg" electrolyzed various molten sulphide mixtures. He concluded that pure molten Cu,S and FeS were electronic conductors but that the mixtures exhibited some ionic conduction. In the present investigation, the specific conductance of the industrially important Cu-Fe sulphide mattes was measured as a function of temperature and composition in order to investigate the mode of electrical conduction and the structure of these molten mattes. An alternating-current circuit was used to eliminate the effect of any possible electrode reactions. Apparatus The Conductance Cell: Due to the high specific conductance of the systems studied (10&apos; to 10" ohm-&apos; cm-&apos;), the classical two-terminal cell and Wheat-stone bridge apparatus could not be used. A four-terminal cell was developed in order to eliminate lead resistance, and an ac potentiometer circuit was designed to give rapid and sufficiently accurate measurements of the cell resistance. A diagram of the conductivity cell is given in Fig. 1. The molten matte is contained in a dense alundum crucible, and spectrographic graphite rods that dip into the molten matte serve as the four conductance terminals. Two of the graphite rods on opposite sides of the cell serve as current-carrying leads, and the other two graphite rods are null-current probes that detect the potential drop across the cell. These graphite rods are contained in silica tubes, and the lower constricted portions of the two silica tubes define the column of liquid whose electrical resistance is being measured. BOLIVIA still remains among the oil countries that have proved oil acreage but no production which is being marketed. No steps have been taken during the past year to provide facilities for transport of Bolivian oil to market nor are any known to be contemplated for 1930. The only active operator to date is the Standard Oil Co. of Bolivia, subsidiary of the Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey. The potential production from completed wells is practically unchanged from the 1928 figure of 6000 bbl. daily. As far as is known, there has been only one completion during the year 1929. This is the Machareti well, which is about 50 km. north of Villa Montes along the road to Charagua. The well is reported at about 250 bbl. daily initial production. The gravity of the oil is not known but is presumed to be about 40" Bé., the average for the region. The Standard Oil Co. of Bolivia has five strings working on various parts of its concession. No new locations have been made definitely. Company Activities There was no change in the situation of American holdings in Bolivia during 1929. The oil rights of an English company, acquired under a special colonization contract with the Bolivian Government, are being negotiated in New York and may mean the entrance of another of the large American oil companies in Bolivia. The Sucre Syndicate sold its holdings to the Standard Oil Co. of Bolivia during the past year. .A local company called the "Aguila Doble" was formed during 1929 to drill a well or wells near the town of Cochabamba on structures mapped by a local geologist. It is reported that the Government is buying about one-fourth of the capital stock of this company for 500,000 Bolivianos (about $180,000). The company has not yet raised sufficieht funds to buy drilling equipment so that no operations have been started. According to the statements published in La Pas, this company has acreage on seven anticlinal structures near Cochabamba. This area lies about 8500 ft. above sea level on the eastern Hank of the Andes Moun-

THE large-scale manufacture and use of uranium in conjunction with the atomic energy development during the war led to a need for knowing the equilibrium diagrams of uranium with various other metals. The alloys of uranium with aluminum and with iron were among the first that were studied for this purpose. Much of the work was done in the manner of a survey since it was necessary to determine the important features of the phase diagrams rather than to obtain completely detailed results. For this reason no attempt was made to locate exactly such features as liquidus lines, solid solubility limits and compound and eutectic compositions. It is believed, however, that there are no great inaccuracies in the diagrams reported here and that no important points were overlooked. Earlier work on alloys of uranium with aluminum and iron is almost nonexistent and in each case is considered to have been of little value by M. Hansen. It is interesting to note, however, that the compound UAl3 was first reported in 1902 by L. Guillet. Experimental Procedure Materials: The uranium used for making most of the aluminum alloys was obtained from material prepared by Metal Hydrides, Inc., and melted in vacuum at M.I.T. Because of the lack of an adequate supply of metal, it was necessary to use material from several different batches and hence it is impossible to state an exact analysis. However, a few results indicated about 0.01 to 0.03 pct iron and probably about 0.03 to 0.05 pct carbon. Toward the end of the work a small amount of metal was obtained from Brown University and from Iowa State College and this was used in determining the transformations in pure metal and in some dilute alloys. All of the aluminum used in this investigation came from a supply of high purity metal (greater than 99.9 pct aluminum) which was obtained through the courtesy of Dr. Mehl of the Carnegie Institute of Technology. The uranium used for making the alloys with iron was produced by the bomb reduction process which has been described by J. Chipman.² This metal, after vacuum melting, contained about 99.9 pct uranium by weight with carbon and iron as the chief impurities. Electrolytic iron containing about 0.012 pct carbon, 0.020 pct nickel and 0.009 pct copper was used in making the melts. Melting Equipment: The melting of the alloys went through a stage of development which culminated in the use of beryllia or beryllia-lined crucibles and in the use of high frequency heating in either vacuum or in an atmosphere of argon. It was found that uranium at a few hundred degrees above its melting point would pick up aluminum and to a lesser extent silicon from an alundum thimble while aluminum above 1000°C would extract silicon from the impure alundum. No reaction of either metal with beryllia was noted at temperatures as high as 1800°C. The distillation of aluminum from the aluminum-rich alloys was quite troublesome at temperatures above about 1300°C and was only partially avoided by the use of argon instead of vacuum. The 3rd Law of the Sea (L0S) Conference was held in Caracas in mid-1974, and a fourth UN conference, scheduled for mid-March in Geneva, will once again attempt to produce a cohesive LOS Convention to take up where the 1958 Geneva Convention left off. The 1958 Convention specified coastal state resource rights on a continental shelf out to a water depth of 200 m-a supposed technological limitation at the time. But the surge of offshore petroleum drilling and the advent of the nodule resource have long since exploded beyond the 200-m limit.

The writer has dealt with the effect of various methods of melting copper upon the gas content of the metal.&apos; The copper referred to in his earlier paper was melted in the foundry both in the oil furnace and the electric furnace. As the metal did not measure up to conductivity standard, the term "casting copper" was applied to the material in the title of the paper. It was thought that some information in regard to the gases in a sample of overpoled copper might also be of interest, and through the courtesy of C. R. Stevens, superintendent of the copper mill of the West-inghouse Elec. & Mfg. Co., such a sample was obtained. The metal was chill-cast in the form of an ingot about 7 in. long, 2 1/2 in. deep (from the base to the raised surface of the ingot) and from 1 3/8 to 1 7/8 in. wide. A photograph of part of the ingot is shown in Fig. 1. The effect of over-poling on the surface of the metal is here quite clearly shown.
