IN the course of a series of measurements of the rate of diffusion of carbon in austenite at about 960°C. (1760°F.) and 1110°C. (2030°F.), it became necessary to determine carbon concentration when austenite is saturated with graphite, because of indications that the hitherto accepted value of the solubility of graphite in this temperature range is too low. Specimens of carbonyl iron were saturated at temperature in a hydrogen-toluene atmosphere which was in equilibrium with graphite. The carbon content of the steel was measured either by combustion or by the loss of weight after substantially complete decarburization in an atmosphere of hydrogen saturated at room temperature with water vapor. The absence of carbide or graphite as a phase at temperature was demonstrated by microscopic examination of saturated specimens that had been drastically quenched. The mean result of concordant measurements is that gamma iron saturated with respect to graphite contains 1.39 per cent carbon at 957°C. (1755°F.) and 1.89 per cent at 1110°C. (2030°F.). These two values, plotted along with what appears from the literature to be the best value (0.69 per cent) at the iron-graphite eutectoid temperature (738°C. or 1360°F.), yield a curve that is almost linear, and which, continued upward through a short interval, leads to a limiting solubility of 1.98 per cent at the iron-graphite eutectic temperature 1135°C. (2075°F.) instead of the commonly accepted value of about 1.7 per cent. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The samples of carbonyl iron, with the exception of those for microscopic examination, were cylinders 3.8 cm. long, 0.475 cm. in diameter. They were placed in a graphite holder and suspended in a vertical furnace, the temperature of which was controlled precisely by means of the resistance of the platinum winding.1 In the empty furnace the range of temperature over a distance of 4 cm. at the heat center was 9°C. (16°F.) but at a given location the temperature remained within ±0.5°C. (0.9°F.); it was measured by inserting a platinum-rhodium couple calibrated at the melting point of palladium, 1555°C. Since the presence of the sample probably improved the uniformity of temperature, it was decided to consider the average temperature of the sample to be 3°C. lower than the maximum measured in the empty furnace with the same setting of the controller. Data were obtained in the vicinity of two temperatures, 960°C. (1760°F.) and 1110°C. (2030°F.). The samples for microscopic examination, 2.2 cm. long, 0.475 cm. in diameter, were suspended individually on pure iron wire; for these no temperature correction was applied. Recently the long-chain primary amines have been used extensively for the flotation of silicate minerals. The use of amines to float sulphide minerals has been investigated by several authorsl-5-l8 but most of this work has been done with the short-chain (less than six carbon atoms) primary amine compounds or the more expensive secondary, tertiary and quaternary amines. Perhaps the fact that the long-chain amines are good collectors for the common gangue minerals has led investigators to omit them from consideration as collectors for the selective flotation of metallic sulphides. The work reported in this paper was designed to investigate the use of a typical long-chain amine salt, laurylamine hydro-chloride, as a collector for the flotation of galena-sphalerite ores. The results show that laurylamine hydrochloride (LAmHCl), when used in small amounts, is a good collector for the selective flotation of sphalerite and galena from the common gangue minerals. The differential flotation of sphalerite from galena was not accomplished but the amine flotation of sphalerite after the standard xanthate flotation of galena is possible. The experimental work reported herein is not complete enough to be able to say whether amine flotation of lead-zinc ores would prove superior to xanthate flotation, or whether the method is even applicable to a more complex ore than the one used for this work. However, the apparent reagent costs for the flotation operations described in this paper seem to be less than for xanthate flotation. This fact alone should be sufficient to encourage the millman to investigate the use of these amine reagents, especially as these reagents are available on a commercial scale at a reasonable price. This paper has as its secondary purposes to illustrate how contact-angle measurements have aided in this investigation, and to bring forward some evidence concerning the mechanism of the collecting action of primary amines. Contact-angle Tests The contact-angle measurements were made by the method described by del Giudice6 and used in recent work by Taggart and his collaborators.7-9 The mineral specimens for the contact-angle tests were carefully chosen, to avoid cracks and inclusions of other minerals. All specimens were mounted in "transoptic" plastic mounts and the surfaces were cleaned by polishing with levigated alumina on a cloth-coverkd glass polishing wheel. Distilled water was used on the lap during the polishing and at all subsequent steps in the contact-angle tests. The mounted mineral specimens were handled with glass forceps and special care was exercised to prevent exposure of the clean surface to air or any other source of contamination.

The income of the Institute is derived from dues, subscriptions to MINING AND METALLURGY and sale of publications. These sources are fortunately supplemented by the interest from invested funds now amounting to over $500,000, a considerable portion constituting endowments for especial purposes. Aside from the medal funds the principal endowments are the James Douglas Fund for support of the Library, the Rocky Mountain Fund and the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund. The income from the two last named is available for the support of research and a variety of other purposes. It is allocated by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of standing committees in each case. An active effort is being made to increase the endowments of the Institute, it being felt that unusual opportunities exist for research and public and professional service through the organization and at a minimum of expense. Much work has been done recently on the lead-antimony system' in connection with lead-rich alloys of commercial importance containing less than 20 per cent. antimony. Dean, Zickrick and Nix have called attention to the perpetuation in the literature of several erroneous data, such as a eutectic temperature of 228° C. at 12.5 per cent. antimony, instead of 247° at 13 per cent. The series is given as a classic example of a straight eutectiferous series in such late books as those of Heyn and Grossmann,2 Jeffries and Archer,3 Guillet and Portevin,4 Pulsifer,5 Rosenhain,6 and Liddell,7 as well as the somewhat earlier works of Hofman (1918), Wang (1909), and Williams (1920). The work of Dean has definitely shown a solid solution of antimony in lead at about 2.5 per cent. antimony. While lecturing to a class in general metallurgy at the University of Idaho, the writer had the students prepare a series of lead-antimony alloys for the purpose of illustrating methods of thermal analysis. The need for standardizing methods of arriving at definite conclusions regarding the cleanability of a given coal, and for measuring the performance of coal-cleaning equipment, is constantly increasing. Earlier notes by the author on this subject are amplified in this paper, because he believes that better preparation of bituminous coal is a partial solution of the coal operators' troubles. Washability Studies The term "washability" of coal was coined when washing was the universal method of separating coal from its impurities by utilizing their difference in specific gravity. This and analogous terms are still used in their broad sense although pneumatic or air separation is now used to clean coal. These terms are so used in this paper. Too much time or money can hardly be spent on "feed surveys') to get a "picture" of the coal that is to be cleaned. There have been too many "rule of thumb" methods used. Screen analyses and "sink-and-float" tests on the raw coal enable the coal operator and washery man to predict within reasonable limits the results that may be expected from any efficient cleaning apparatus. The sizes to be examined to get the picture are optional to the investigator. In modern wet washing, the range is from 4 to 0 in. Hand-picking on properly constructed belts is perhaps the standard for cleaning above these sizes. A good picture of the coal may be obtained by the following screen analysis: 3½ to 1¼ in. 1¼ to 3½ in. ½ to 5/16 in. 5/16 in. to 14 mesh 14 to 28 mesh 28 to 48 mesh and for very complete data on the fines: 48 to 100 mesh 100 to 200 mesh and through 200 mesh

Mineral fillers have been defined as inert materials that are included in a composition for some useful purpose. Because this definition and the scope of this review are not specific-indeed, exceptions abound-accurate total statistics are unavailable. One source estimates the total production in the United States in 1979 at 11.3 Mt (12.5 million st) valued at $534 million, averaging $49.19 per ton. Included are a broad group of minerals-asbestos, barite, bentonite, ground limestone and dolomite, clays, diatomite, feldspar, micas, silica, talc. Additional references will be made to synthetic mineral-derived fillers such as aluminum hydrate, precipitated calcium carbonate, and pyrogenic and precipitated silicas and silicates. A section on related uses at the end of this chapter covers absorbents and filters. Mineral fillers can be included in compounds to accomplish a variety of final results. Hardness, brittleness, impact strength, compressive strength, softening point, fire resistance, surface texture, electrical conductivity, and a host of other physical characteristics may be modified by the inclusion of fillers. These effects are the result of properties of the fillers, including chemical activity, hardness, particle size, shape and distribution, surface structure, color, density, and refractive index. To facilitate an overview of the mineral filler industry, this chapter will review the general usage of fillers, the inherent characteristics that intensify their utilization, and similarly their manufactured characteristics. Major using industries will then be examined in detail. Specific information on deposits and processing for industrial minerals will be found in the appropriate commodity chapter. All of these same minerals have additional significant uses based on their chemical composition or other characteristics. References will be found in other use chapters and summarized in commodity chapters. The chart in Table 1, updated from the 4th edition of Industrial Minerals and Rocks, illustrates the major mineral fillers (both natural and manufactured) and their more important end uses. Use of Mineral Fillers Archaeologists have found that more than 5000 years ago, bitumen used for mortar and waterproofing contained mineral contaminants that acted as fillers. Since that time man has added mineral products to compounds to improve certain characteristics. Perhaps the most common objective of filler usage is reduction of cost of the end product. Certainly the inclusion of a filler that costs 2¢ per 0.45 kg (lb) will reduce the cost of a plastic product whose resin costs 50¢ per 0.45 kg (lb). But the decision to use a specific filler is not that simple. It may "soak up" binder, making a compound more viscous and perhaps preventing its flow into a mold as an injection molding compound, but similarly will give good anti-sag characteristics to putty, caulking compound, or undercoating. WITH the exception of the work of Vogel,&apos; and Rolla and Iandelli, very little information has appeared in the literature on titanium binary systems with the rare earth elements. Rare-earth additions to titanium alloys may possibly parallel the beneficial effects on the physical properties of certain steels. Having this in mind, some knowledge of solubility limits and intermediate phases, if any, would be useful. An investigation of the titanium-rich Ti-Ce system was started. Alloy Preparation The iodide titanium from the New Jersey Zinc Co. and the cerium metal from the Institute for Atomic Research Ames Laboratory used in this work were supplied with the typical analysis shown —iodide titanium: 0.0065 pct Mn, 0.0022 pct Fe, 0.0015 pct Cu, and 0.0042 pct Pb; cerium metal: <0.01 pct Fe, <0.03 pct Si, <0.05 pct Ta, <0.02 pct Pr, <0.03 pct Ca, <0.02 pct Mg, with no trace of Nd, La, or Th. The cerium metal, stored in oil, was washed and scraped just before weighing into capped cups machined from iodide titanium. The cold hearth helium-arc furnace described by Schramm et al3 was used for melting. The alloy buttons from the arc-melted cup were cut in two, mounted, and examined. Homogeneous alloys were demounted and rolled to approximately 1/4-in.sq bars. Sections l/8 in. thick were cut from the bar to provide samples. The Ti-Ce alloy buttons analyzed for cerium were of the following composition: 0.19, 0.36, 0.48, 0.61, 1.15, 2.52, 3.06, 3.70, 4.30, 9.20, 14.26, and 18.50 wt pct. Nominal

In high-volume mining operations, preventive maintenance programs that include standardized replacement wear parts can boost equipment availability and lower unit costs. Meeting the daily production targets depends heavily on keeping equipment working as close to full time as possible. This is the case at one medium-sized western surface coal operation producing approximately 2.7 million t/y (3 million stpy). The mine, located in western Wyoming, removes in excess of 8 million m3 (10.5 million cu yd) of highly abrasive overburden each year. According to the mine superintendent, "Abrasion at this mine is some of the worst I&apos;ve ever seen. Shovel points can wear out in little more than one shift. Dozer blades some- times last two weeks, but can wear out sooner. And ripper points really take a beating. If we can replace this fast-wearing iron with small pieces that go on quickly, we think that&apos;s the way to go."

MINERAL production in almost all European countries suffered a sharp setback because of the war. Plants were damaged, transportation facilities disrupted, and labor dispersed and demoralized. Since the war, due to lack of confidence and economic stability, there has been little incentive to rebuild and expand the mineral industries even though a big demand at high prices exists for mineral products. Most mining and metallurgical companies in Europe hesitate to invest their capital because of the tendency towards nationalizing industry, high taxes, and low output of labor, as well as the deficiency of mine supplies and equipment within their countries. In short, they do not have faith in the future, and for these same reasons and fears most of the mining companies in America will not risk capital investment in Europe. In Europe, including the United Kingdom, free enterprise has been losing ground and as a result the foundation of their economic welfare is being undermined. American mining interests willing to take the initiative could help in counteracting this influence if a way were found for them to co-operate with the European producer without too great a risk.

The pressure drop in a well per unit rate of flow is conrolled by the resistance of the formation, the viscosity of the fluid. and the additional resistance concentrated around the well bore resulting from the drilling and completion technique employed and, perhaps, from the production practices used. The pressure drop caused by this additional resistance is defined in this paper as the skin effect. denoted by the symbol S. This skin effect considerably detracts from a well&apos;s capacity to produce. Methods are given to determine quantitatively (a) the value of S, (b) the final build-up pressure, and (c) the product of average permeability times the thickness of the producing formation. INTRODUCTION Equations which relate the pressure in a well producing from a homogeneous formation with pressures existing at various distances around the well are generally used within the industry. The relation ii quite simple when the fluid flowing is assumed to be incompressible. It becomes somewhat more complicated when the flowing fluid is considered compressible so that the duration of the flow can he considered. In each case the major portion of the pressure drop occurs close to the well bore. However analyses of pressure build-up curves indicate that the pressure drop in the vicinity of the well bore is greater than that computed from these equations using the known, physical characteristics of the formation and the fluids. In order to explain there excessive drops it is necessary to assume that permeability of the formation at and near the well bore is substantially reduced as a result of drilling. completion and, perhaps. production practice. This possibility has been recognized in the literature. A method to compute the pressure drop due to a reduction of the permeability of the formation near the well bore. which is designated as the skin effect. S, is given in the following paragraphs. To start, equations normally used to describe flow in the vicinity of a well are given without considering this effect. These equations then are modified to include the effect of a skin on the pressure behavior. Finally a method is given to estimate the effect of the skin on the pressure and production behavior of a well. PRESSURE EQUATIONS Incompressible Fluid Flow If p is defined as the flowing pressure in a well of radius the pressure at distance r from the well has been shown to be:" The total pressure drop between the drainage boundary, and the well bore is given by These equations are valid only if the flow towards the well occurs in a horizontal homogeneous medium and the fluids are incompressible. The assumptions imply that all fluid taken from the well enters the system at r a condition rarely encountered in practice. Compressible Fluid Flow, Steady State A more realistic equation is obtained if it is assumed that the compressibility, c, of the flowing fluids is small and has a constant value over the pressure range encountered. After the well has been producing for some time so that its rate has become constant and steady state is reached, the pressures throughout the drainage area are falling by the same amount per unit of time, and the pressure differences between a point in the drainage area and the well are constant. When these conditions are met. the rate of production, q, from a well is equal to where dp/dt is the pressure drop per unit time. The complete equations of average linear momentum balance for a single-phase fluid in an incompreisible, homogeneous, porous medium are derived. The derivation begins with Euler&apos;s equation of motion for a continuum and uses an integral transform recently developed by Slattery. 7 For steady flow of a compressible, Newtonian fluid, the usual equations of motion result. For transient flow, the space-time description of the pressure is determined in the lowest approximation by the telegrapher&apos;s equation. From the analysis a new phenomenological coefficient results which connects the viscous traction to the deriv ative of the linear momentum density. The magnitude of this coefficient determines the velocity of sound through the pore structure in this approximation to the pressure field. INTRODUCTION The modification of Darcy&apos;s law of momentum balance for steady, single-phase flow through porous media has been discussed for many years. The first modification was suggested by Forcheimerl who added terms of higher order in the velocity. These can be expected to appear because the underlying microscopic equations of momentum balance are themselves nonlinear in the point velocity field. The Reynolds tensor pvv, which represents the convective flux of momentum density, appears in the momentum balance equation. Only in rectilinear flow (parallel stream lines) does the divergence of this tensor vanish. Since the steady flow stream lines in most porous media are not parallel, nonlinear dependence of the pressure gradient on the velocity should naturally appear. This nonlinearity has nothing to do with turbulence in the ordinary sense of random fluctuations in the pressure and velocity fields. It arises simply because the stream lines converge and diverge, even for steady flows. Klinkenberg2 demonstrated that the permeability coefficient in Darcy&apos;s law depends on the absolute pressure or, alternatively, on the density field. However, because he neglected inertial terms of the Forcheimer type, his correction coefficient could not be represented by a constant but tended toward a constant as the velocity decreased. Forcheimer&apos;s and Klinkenberg&apos;s modifications can be combined in a rigorous way to account for both inertia and slip during steady flow. This will be shown in a future paper. The transient change of pressure in porous media has been described by the diffusion equation.3 This form results from eliminating the velocity and density fields from a combination of the equations of motion in the form of Darcy&apos;s law, the continuity equation and an equation of state. Fatt4 suggested that the cause of deviations from the prediction of the diffusion equation for pressure transients lies not in the choice of Darcy&apos;s law as the equation of motion but on the existence of dead-end pores which might invalidate the averaged equation of continuity. On the other hand, Oroveanu and Pascal5 noted chat the time derivative of the momentum density must be included in the equations of motion since this measures the local rate of change of momentum density. Their differential equation for pressure is the telegrapher&apos;s equation (neglecting gravity). However, their form of this equation predicts that the speed of pressure propagation through the pore structure is the same as that through the bulk fluid. M. K. Hubbert6 attempted a derivation of Darcy&apos;s law by volume averaging the Navier-Stokes equations. Since these equations represent momentum balance at a point within an open set of points containing the fluid itself, Hubbert&apos;s volume averaging cannot lead to tenns involving transfer of momentum between the fluid and the walls of the pores. In a recent study of Fe-Si alloys Walter and Koch&apos; observed pairs of dislocations in Fe-6.25 pct Si crystals rolled to reductions of 10 pct and subsequently annealed for 1 hr at 650°C. They interpreted these pairs as being due to stacking faults. From the spacing of the dislocations a stacking-fault energy of 15 to 19 ergs per sq cm was calculated. These authors did not pay any attention to the order -disorder phenomena in Fe-Si alloys. It is the purpose of this communication to report some preliminary results from a study of ordering and its influence on the plastic deformation of Fe-6.0 pct Si alloys. Our results suggest that the dislocation pairs observed by Walter and Koch may have been due to long-range order rather than to stacking faults. The alloys used in this investigation were prepared from pure electrolytic iron and silicon and were melted in argon. After hot working, strip tensile specimens were machined to a gage length of 70 mm and a thickness of 1 mm. The specimens were heat- treated for 2 hr at 1000°C, furnace-cooled, and subsequently deformed 2 pct in tension at 400°C. The strain rate was 5.6 X lo-&apos; sec-&apos;. Thin foils of the deformed specimens were prepared by means of the Bollman technique and examined in a Siemens Elmis-kop I at an accelerating voltage of 100 kv. In the Fe-Si system long-range ordering occurs at a silicon content of about 6 pct Si. In our alloys evidence for ordering is given by selected-area diffraction patterns which show extra reflections consistent with a super lattice of the D0 9 type. In addition, the dislocation arrangement in deformed specimens indicates that long-range order is present. A typical mi-crophotograph of a thin foil is shown in Fig. l. The dislocations are usually straight and parallel and laying in distinct directions. In the commonly observed (111) zone the projections of the dislocations are close to (113) and (oil). Observation of the image position indicates that the two dislocations in a pair have the same Burgers vector and hence constitute a superlattice dislocation.~ According to theory3 a superlattice dislocation in the DO3 structure consists of four ordinary dislocations connected by two types of antiphase boundaries as shown in Fig. 2. INTRODUCTION The major mining operations of the Ontario Division of Inco Metals Company are located in the Sudbury Basin. Around the rim of this geo- logical formation and within thirty miles of the City of Sudbury are located eleven under- ground mines of the Company, two of which are on standby. In addition, there is one mine in Northwestern Ontario at Shebandowan, 1127 Km (700 miles) northwest of Sudbury. In 1980 ore production totalled 10.6 x 10 mt (11.7 million tons) from underground and open pit operations. Underground mining methods include blasthole, vertical retreat, sublevel caving, cut-and-fill and undercut-and-fill. Inco reduction operations in the Sudbury area include two concentrators, one smelter, one iron ore recovery plant, a copper refinery a nickel refinery and a high purity plate rolling mill. As well, an electrolytic nickel refinery is located on Lake Erie at Port Colborne, near Niagara Falls. In the Sudbury District, Inco employees total 14,278 of whom 6,490 are directly employed in the mining and milling operations. I T H DRILLING Background - The use of long blastholes in underground operations at Inco mines in the Sudbury district started more than 30 years ago at the Levack Mine. At that time, diamond drills were used to mine ore by open stoping and for pillar recovery. By the 1950&apos;s the concept had been extended to all mines. The heavy percussion drill was also developed by this time and led to the acceptance of the 11.43 cm (4% in.) piston diameter drifter for bar and arm and fan drill applications. The use however, of the nominal 5.08 cm (2 in.) diameter blastholes drilled radially from the level or sublevel causes overdrilling at the periphery. As well, the smaller holes are subject to hole deviation, are difficult to drill beyond 38.1 m (125 ft.) and require the need for several drilling horizons or sublevels. The need to improve blasthole stoping techniques and our experience with large diameter blastholes in open pit mining led to the trial of an I T H drill in 1962. The test was unsuccessful however, since button bits were not available at the time and the tungsten carbide cross bit experienced short life, gauge loss, and caused hole deviation and poor penetration rates. The successful application of the raise borer beginning in 1964 and the ability to drill 20.32 cm (8 in.) to 27.94 cm (11 in.) diameter pilot holes led to the development of smaller, more portable, rotary drills for blasthole mining. As a result, a mining method based on the use of 20 cm (7 718 in.) diameter, 60.1 m (200 ft.) long rotary blastholes was developed and tested successfully at our C.C.North Mine. Between 1972, when the method was first tested, and 1973 over 4572 m (15000 ft.) of large holes were drilled with rotary drills in the recovery of 175,960 mt (194000 tons) of primary stoping and pillar remnants. A new mining method was developed that made use of this large hole drilling equipment. Instead of longhole carbide drilling by bar-and-arm or fan drill set-ups at sublevels, the large diameter holes were drilled full stope height from the top sill, which substantially reduced development, drilling time and improved fragmentation. These drills however, were difficult to move and set-up, and had a high maintenance cost and low productivity. The capital outlay and extensive technical development required to improve these drills and reduce the high drilling costs however, was economically unattractive. To evaluate chemically the sample of rock obtained by diamond drilling, it has long been recognized that the analyses of the two components of the sample, core and sludge, must be given appropriate influence in computing the average analysis of any unit of depth. The purpose of this investigation is to set forth what means are available for apportioning the effect of core and sludge on the final analysis, what variables affect the problem, and what combination of applied mathematics will closest approximate the truth under each condition as these variables proceed within their limitations. A drill hole is bored in iron ore exploration principally to test variations in rock composition with depth and is usually directed as nearly normal to the bedding of a horizon to be tested as possible. This practice has a tendency to minimize variation in composition laterally which in any event is not likely to be great. It is obvious that the opportunity for change in analysis of a particular rock is not statistically as great radially in a diamond drill hole where the distance in which such a change may occur is from 0.719 in. (EX bit) to 1.469 in. (NX bit) as there would be longitudinally even in a&apos; run as short as 5 ft. Variations in composition of bedded or layered rocks are usually greater normal to the bedding than parallel thereto. Even in massive rocks, like porphyries, variations are functions of distance. Hence. in either case, variations along the hole are of greater effect than across it. Let us examine Fig 1 briefly to observe a cross section of a unit of depth of a typical diamond drill hole. If we neglect radial change in chemical composition, which we have seen is small compared to lengthwise variation, we can see that if core recovery was 100 pct, the core and its surrounding area, which would be recovered as cuttings (assuming 100 pct sludge recovery), must analyze the same if the sampling is perfect. This is the foundation of this paper, namely, that if core recovery is complete we may assume that the core constitutes as nearly as possible a perfect sample of the ground drilled. Now let us pass to the methods of weighting core and sludge in the final analysis and then develop each in turn. One might employ core analyses only, sludge analyses only, or apportion the influence of each by one of several methods. The most common apportionment is by direct proportion to relative theoretical vol- &apos; ume occupied by each component in the cylinder hollowed out by the drill, known as the Longyear formula. Another logical treatment would be to consider core and sludge in the final analysis according to the weight of each recovered. This procedure was elaborately set forth and refined by R. S. Moeh1man.l Then to be sure that we have embraced all the possibilities, we must admit that some other method or methods may be devised empirically or by mathematical maneuvers. Should a drill machine be capable of recovering 100 pct of the core in all types of rock, certainly core alone need be analyzed and no complicated mathematics are required; but although some companies have had fair success in obtaining high percentages of core in certain homogeneous ores on the Mar-quette Range, their same methods have proved disappointing on the Menominee, Cuyuna, and Gogebic Ranges where the iron formation often varies widely from flinty chert beds interstratified with soft hematite to wholly leached ore material composed of an unpredictable mixture of hematite and limonite with occasional zones of sugary, recrystallized chert. In spite of numerous mechanical improvements in core barrels, few drilling programs can count on complete core recovery. The sludge alone might be analyzed but for practical reasons this is inadvisable when core is obtained due to the numerous opportunities for contaminating or losing portions of the cuttings. The Longyear formula involves a weighting of the core and sludge in proportion to the theoretical volume of each, that is, where the volume of the core recovered is one-third of the total cubic volume of the cylindrical hole made by the drill, the analysis of the core is given one-third of the weight in the final analysis. SOMETIMES the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers appears to be a strictly technical society, and if so my paper should deal with the technical operations of finding and producing gold. But I have not been engaged in practical gold mining since 1910. What I have been doing mainly for the last 25 years is to try to figure out what the income of a mine-gold, or any other-would be worth to an investor. So I have been in contact with gold mining, in one way or another, for some 42 years. I say that with a purpose. In that time the industry has been through one of its cycles. The value of gold mines is very dif¬ferent at different points in one of these cycles. For this reason the cycle of gold mining is a highly practical study. The cycle of gold is a more or less rhythmical change in its value or purchasing power measured in the grand average of other commodities, which is the same thing as its price. Taking the price of gold in 1897 as a stand¬ard, a dollar at that time declined to 55c. in 1913, to 26.8c. in 1920, and since then it has risen to 47.4c. in 1930 and to about 64c. in 1932. It is worth about 21/ times as much now as it was in 1920, but less than two¬thirds as much as in 1897. When this change is applied to the value of a gold mine still greater differences are evident. The cost of producing gold is of course measured in labor and other commodities, and as that cost goes down the margin of profit measured in the gold itself increases. Thus a mine which might make only 10 per cent profit in 1920 on its gross output may easily make 25 per cent now. The stockholder gets 2 ½ times more gold that is worth 2 1/2 times as much in purchasing power, therefore the real value of his holding has risen by the one factor multiplied by the other, giving him 61/4 times as much goods or services as he had in 1920.

The study and use of low-carbon manganese steels have been curiously neglected in the general history of developments in alloy steels. Hadfield1 made an extensive study of manganese-iron-carbon alloys about 1886, which culminated in the wide application and use of Hadfield austenitic manganese steel. His alloys were nearly all high in carbon, as compared with the steels discussed in this paper, and he found a marked tendency toward brittleness in the alloys of medium and low manganese content, that is, below 7 per cent. manganese. As a result, there has been a widespread prejudice against the use of manganese steels containing between 1.0 to 3.5 per cent. manganese with comparatively low carbon. Steels of this composition have never been studied adequately in comparison with other alloy steels, and have had litttle use in practice. In a very recent paper by Sir Robert Hadfield2 the following statement appears: 6L... manganese-iron alloys with little or no carbon do not seem to offer any practical employment; they only become valuable in the presence of quite high percentages of carbon, 0.90 to 1.50 percent." The results of the present investigation are so contrary to the findings of Hadfield that the writers feel fully justified in presenting the preliminary report incorporated in this paper. The writing that is effective is woven with a fine texture into an agreeable pattern; it is free from knots, loose threads, and stray fluff. The instrument that weaves this literary fabric, whether it produce a homely sock or a lordly tapestry, a simple story or a learned &apos;Itreatise, is a disciplined intelligence, as sure as a steel needle, as precise as a swift loom. The simile breaks down at this point, for the product of the pen is instinct with the human spirit and therefore transcends in beauty anything made by a mere machine. If words are to be woven into eloquent meaning, they must be well knit. Upon the relation of words to each other and of groups of words to other groups, known as phrases, clauses, and sentences, depends the success of writing as a means of trans¬mitting thought from man&apos; to man. To be understood beyond question, you should know not only what your words denote but how to build your sentences; you must not only choose your words aright but construct your sentences properly. A sentence is a combination of words that makes complete sense; it says something about something. &apos; A clause is a subordinate sentence or a sentence within a sentence. A phrase is a group of words without a predicate; it makes sense, but not complete sense. For example: I shall wait for a few minutes before I go home: The whole statement is a sentence; "I shall wait" and "before I go home" are clauses; "for a few minutes" is an adverbial phrase. The orderly arranging of words and of combinations of words is called `syntax&apos;; and from the original Greek form, ouvaeis (suntaxis), is derived the Greek name for an editor,

IT is with particular pleasure that I welcome the members of the Open-hearth Conference of the I American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers to this meeting, as I feel this is one of the most useful activities of the Institute in the field of ferrous metallurgy. For the information of our other members I might say the Open-hearth Conference was organized by Mr. Reynders when he was president, and is made up of open-hearth superintendents and metallurgists. All the plants are invited to send representatives, and practically all do, with the exception of the U. S. Steel Corporation. It meets twice a year to discuss various problems in connection with the manufacture of steel, and its minutes are published for the benefit of those attending, the expense being defrayed by the participating companies. This conference, .1 believe, should be a model for activities in the other branches of the work covered by this Institute. It works, not by reading formal papers, which we all know is not a very satisfactory method to bring out the experience of others, but rather by a round-table method of discussion. The spirit of the meetings is such that each member feels perfectly free to state his experience, and he gets as much as he gives. A series of topics for, discussion is brought to the attention of the chairman and after one is exhausted the next point is taken up. In this way there is a real interchange of ideas and experiences which cannot fail l to be of the greatest benefit to those attending. That these meetings are beneficial is evidenced by the "continued growing attendance and lively discussions at these half-yearly meetings.
