JOHNSON, JR., New York.-It seems to me that it ought to be somebody's job to tie these notch tests with the reversed-stress tests, because the thing that causes failures in structures, in a great majority of cases, is where the material is stressed repeatedly up somewhere near the elastic limit, and the repetition of that stress seems to bring about what I suppose you may call a growth of crystals and that eventually develops into a break. It seems to me that it would be of the greatest value if there could be a coordination of the results of a shock test of some kind with the reversed-stress test, so that we could be sure that a material that had shock-test resistance would have reversed-stress resistance. Freezeproofing waste dump cars during winter months has long been of concern at Kennecott's Utah Copper Div. open pit property. Waste mining operations at Bingham Canyon use trains of seven 40-cu yd side-dump railroad cars with electric locomotives to service stripping shovels. Waste is transported an average of nearly 3 miles from the mine benches to dumping areas. During winter months, usually beginning in late October or early November, intermittent and continued periods of freezing together with varying amounts of snow cause waste material to freeze or stick to the sides and bottoms of the cars. Because of the physical layout of the pit, it is not feasible to freezeproof all waste trains at one or even a limited number of locations. A waste haulage line usually serves one or two mine benches, so that freezeproofing facilities must be maintained at many locations. For example, at the time of writing 27 salting stations were in use.

Frank Firmstone was born Aug. 29, 1846, at Glendon Iron Works, near Easton, Pa., the residence of his father, William Firmstone, one of the pioneers of the anthracite-iron business. After preliminary school education at Easton, Pa., he attended the Saunders Military Academy in Philadelphia and subsequently entered the Polytechnic College of Pennsylvania, where he was graduated as Mining Engineer in 1865, at the age of nineteen. In 1865 and 1866, he was employed in railroad surveying. In January, 1867, he became draftsman and in 1869, assistant manager of the Glendon Iron Works, of which his father was manager until his death in 1875, when the son practically succeeded to that position, becoming formally in January, 1877, and remaining until February, 1887, the manager of the works and business agent of the Glendon Iron Company. In February, 1889, he became President of the Cranberry Iron and Coal Company, and held that position until November, 1897. He was a director of the Longdale Iron Company, Longdale, Va., from its organizationin 1870 until its dissolution in 1911. With the termination of this official responsibility, Mr. Firmstone retired from active business, although he continued to maintain an intelligent interest, and to play a helpful part, in the scientific progress of the iron industry, in which he had been a leader.

Albert Ludwig Serlo was born February 14, 1824, at Crossen-on-the-Oder. After completing his school-studies and his training as a mining official, he received in 1851 an appointment as Royal Manager of salt-works (Salinenfactor) and member of the Administratioll of Salines at Konigsborn, near Unna, Westphalia. The issue of new regulations for the training of higher State officials in the Department of Mining, Metallurgy and Salines, led him to pass in 1856 a special examination for the rank of Assessor, in consequence of which he was called to Berlin, to serve for a few months as an assistant in the Ministry of Commerce, which had charge of mining, etc. In the same year he became Bergmeister and member of the mining administration at Bochum, Westphalia, and in 1858 Oberbergrath and member of the provincial administration, called the Oberbergamt, having its headquarters located at Dortmund. (written discussion?).-On studying this paper it has occurred to the writer that possibly it was the drilling of the test cores that produced the strains which affected in-juriously the authors' unrested bars. They found that the machining had only a slight effect, but did they also investigate the effect of the drilling by trying rest applied to the bloom sections before the cores were drilled from then? The writer has heard of a similar effect of rest after machining on test bars from castings, and it would seem more reasonable that the ductility was increased because the rests relieved strains pro-duced in chilling the test cores from the blooms, than because of any peculiar combination of solidification and rolling strains in the blooms which did not exist in smaller billets.

IN making comparisons of steel industries, one country with another, the convenient common denominator is annual capacity to make raw steel in the form of ingots. It is always necessary, however, to remember that there are different methods of figuring such capacity. For most countries no official figures on capacity are available, and the only authentic data on production are now six or eight years old. But in spite of those limitations on the accuracy of statistical comparisons, any flaws in the figures are probably not serious enough to alter materially the larger conclusions which may be drawn from them.

AT first sight this subject seems to belong to pure theoretical geology, but examination will soon show that it has important practical and economic interest to the mining engineer. The conclusion that all the northern portions of our country, as well as of the eastern continent, have, in the later periods of geological history, been covered with a thick bed of ice, is now accepted by geologists. This bed of ice, except in its greater magnitude, was like the modern glaciers of the Alps, and other mountains which extend above the line of perpetual snow. The marks it has left upon the surface show that it was comparatively thin on its southern. edge, but that its thick¬ness was much greater a little further north, and that it was several thousand feet thick at its heaviest parts. This variation of its surface would give it a descending slope towards the south, and cause the mass of ice, like a semifluid substance, to move in that direction.
