Lack of a system in scheduling the replacement of capital equipment can result in emergency purchases of units which may later be found unsuitable for the job. New York Trap Rock Corp., which produces crushed stone for use as construction aggregate, was faced with just such a situation some years ago. The company replaced capital equipment only when machinery in use was no longer serviceable, or when there was an obvious need for different equipment. Operating and maintenance costs were generally neglected because an efficient method was lacking. New York Trap Rock has four plants located along the Hudson River, all within 70 miles of New York City. Crushed stone output-6 million tons a year-is moved to markets in metropolitan New York, New Jersey, and Long Island areas by water transport. Customers are contractors with ready-mix concrete and asphalt plants located on the water.

1. Any society of undergraduates at a technical school, comprising students in any branch of engineering, metallurgy, chemistry, geology, etc., may be recognized by the Board of Directors in its discretion as an Affiliated Student Society, and its name, together with the names of its President and its Secretary, may be published in the Bulletin or the Year Book of the Institute. The individual members of such a society will not be catalogued as individual members or associates of the Institute, but may at any time be proposed for election as members or associates of the Institute, in the usual way. 2. Membership in an Affiliated Student Society, certified by the official representative thereof, and accompanied with suitable testimony as to character and qualifications, will have special, weight with the Membership Committee of the Institute, in its consideration of the proposal of a candidate for membership or for Junior membership.

Bedded potash deposits are known only from Phanerozoic evaporite sequences. They are composed of either sylvite or carnallite, of which only the former produces commercial potash ores. Both Permian and Neogene potash deposits have experienced sulfatization by percolating oxygenated surface brines, causing enrichment in the potash content. Permian potash deposits are mined in various parts of Europe and North America, Miocene ones only along the outer rim of the Carpathian Mountains and in Sicily. New discoveries of large Miocene rock salt bodies make it possible to predict the occurrence of potash deposits along their flanks.

An old philosopher once said, "God grant me the serenity to accept those things I cannot change, the courage to change those which I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." It is time to take stock of how the human race has progressed-whether the trend now points toward greater evils or finer things. It is time that we stop fooling ourselves and put into effect a program of "real" conservation. By this it is not meant that we limit our concept to planting new forests, preserving wild life or preventing soil erosion, but rather taking stock of the expectancy of our resources, expanding human resourcefulness and effecting careful utilization and replacing of, or producing substitutes for, material resources. Man is still dependent upon energy and matter in certain usable forms, despite the fact that energy is inherent in all matter. Until such progress is made that the energy contained in all matter can be controlled, man must continue to utilize the common fuels. Advancement of research in atomic energy has cast a gleam of hope for future use of the tremendous energy contained in the atom. Use of atomic power for industrial pursuits would open up limitless resources of power. This energy, of course, is a two-edged sword, since man's progress and his means of destruction have always evolved parallel to each other. Thus it is estab-

DURING the operation of the iron blast furnace, aggregates of hard, infusible, yellow, cubic crystals frequently form in the interstices of the lining and on the hearth of the furnace. These were first examined by Wohler&apos; and were identified by him as a complex cyanonitride of titanium, having a formula Ti(CN)2 • 3Ti3N2, or more simply Ti10C2N8. However, recent investigators have suggested that this complex compound does not exist. Recent work by Hume-Rothery, Raynor, and Little2 on the carbide and nitride particles in titanium steels suggests that a complete series of solid solutions of the general type Ti<0+y>C0Ny exists between titanium carbide (Tic) and titanium nitride (TiN). Assuming this to be true, it seems likely that Wohler&apos;s cyanonitride of titanium is in reality a solid solution of 20 mol pct Tic in 80 mol pct TiN, .the nearly consistent carbide-to-nitride ratio probably resulting from temperature and pressure conditions in the blast furnace. The object of the present work was to investigate thoroughly this possibility of a solid solution by using the single-crystal methods of X-ray analysis. A spectrographic qualitative analysis of a sample of the yellow crystals furnished by the Geneva Steel Co. sh&apos;owed, in addition to the titanium, strong lines of vanadium and moderate to weak lines of iron, magnesium, silicon, aluminum, and calcium. The last five were probably slag impurities, but the vanadium was possibly included in the yellow crystals, owing to a great structural similarity of its carbide (VC) and its nitride (VN) to the titanium compounds, Table 11. IT is always a pleasure for me to join in the Ameri-can Mining Congress, for not only has my own professional life been closely linked with the industry, but the Secretary of Commerce is specifically enjoined in the organic act creating the office to promote and foster the interests of the mining industry. And it is a vital part of our national life. It is one of those indus-tries without which. the nation could not go on for a week. It ranks second only to the agricultural industry in its contribution to our raw materials. Its production amounts to nearly 6 ½ billions annually, providing direct support to probably ten millions of our people through employment to about two million workers. But the in-dustry has a greater importance than even these figures indicate, for with agriculture, forestry, and water power it furnishes the raw materials upon which the whole work of our civilization rests. When the raw ma-terials of our mines emerge. from manufacture with the added expenditure of labor and capital upon them, they have a wholesale value of over fifteen billions of dollars. And in this, the second stage of their application, they give employment to another two million workers and support to about ten million more of our people. A large portion of these manufactured commodities must filter through the retail trade; their total value when delivered to the consumer exceeds twenty billions of dollars. And from this distribution arises the support of many more millions of our people. It is estimated that the products of agriculture when they reach . the consumer, with transportation, manu-facturing, and distribution costs added, have about the same value as the mineral industries-each of them thus contributing about one-quarter of our total na-tional income. No other continent has demonstrated its possession of such a magnitude of minerals as has ours, and such a bountiful distribution over our whole land. But our mineral resources differ in one essential from our other natural resources-they are not renewable. Agricul-ture, forests, and water power replenish their supplies from season to season. Some people conclude from the non-renewable character of the mineral supply that they must shortly be exhausted. The practical question is ,one of time, and time in these matters needs to be measured in generations, and apprehension of exhaus-tion needs to be tempered with many probabilities in-cluding the advance in technical methods of extraction. In some of our minerals, such as coal, iron, and building materials we can, through a knowledge of their geologi-cal structure and occurrence, make fairly good estimates of our reserves. We. know that they will outlast many generations of Americans. In non-ferrous metals and oil, geology affords us no great basis for an estimate of future supply. We only know of the occurrence of minerals of this type by actual exposure of them, and we can thus make no estimates except upon reserves which have been proved by actual development by the process of mining. To develop them ahead merely for national satisfaction of assured future supply would imply an unbearable waste of capital. The consequence is that in these groups there is never a demonstrable assurance of more than a few years&apos; supply ahead of us. Yet we have never failed from year to year to find new deposits and extension of old deposits.

The death of Privy Councilor Bruno Kerl, on March 25, 1905, terminated a distinguished and useful career. Bruno Kerl was born March 24, 1824, at St. Andreasberg in the Harz, and entered in 1840 the mining school of Claus-thal, where he studied for three years, working at the same time in the mines and stamp-mills. After an additional year of practice in the silver-reduction and iron-works of the Upper Harz, he passed his examination as a metallurgical graduate, and studied for a gear at Göttingen under Wöhler in chemistry, Hausmann in mineralogy, and eminent teachers in other branches. In 1846 he was employed at the Oker works, but very soon left this post, to become a tutor in chemistry, metallurgy, etc., at Clausthal, where he continued to labor until 1867. During this period the Clausthal school became a completely equipped Mining Academy, and Kerl was made in 1862 a full professor. Meanwhile, in addition to the work of instruction, he discharged, simultaneously or successively, the duties of many responsible official positions in the Royal Hanoverian administra-

ThIS note reports the observation of masses of dislocation etch pits around the weld necks of small single-crystal particles of calcium fluoride sintered to a cleaved face of a larger CaFz crystal. Crystal particles in the -50 +I00 mesh size range were placed on freshly cleaved CaFz surfaces and heated at 1250°C for 30 min in a tantalum container in an argon atmosphere. The sintered specimens were then etched at room temperature for 40 to 50 min in a 2 pct sulfamic acid solution which is a selective etch for dislocations in caF2.&apos; Figs. 1 through 3 show the masses of dislocation etch pits observed around weld necks after etching. In some cases, particles were gone after removal of the specimens from the furnace although weld necks were readily visible. In other instances, no etch pits formed around a weld neck. A possible cause of concentrations of dislocations on the crystal surface is mechanical deformation of the base crystal when particles are dropped on it. If such a deformation does occur, it would be much smaller than that caused by the light punching of a crystal with a sharp instrument which results in large concentrations of etch pits. However, crystals deformed by punching with the sharp instrument and annealed at the conditions of these experiments (1250°C for 30 min) before etching showed no concentrations of dislocation etch pits. It is obvious that dislocations from the much smaller deformations, possibly created when particles are placed on the surface, would also anneal out. Etching of large crystals which had particles placed on them in the usual manner but which were not heated showed no dislocation concentrations such as shown in Fig. 1. The magnitude of dislocation etch-pit concentrations did not vary with extensive variation of the cooling rate. The appearance of many of the etch-pit clusters is typical of a well-annealed condition, indicating that the dislocation concentrations formed before the specimen temperature was lowered. Therefore, it is evident that thermal stresses in the neck area did not create the deformation indicated by the presence of the dislocations. The possibility exists that the etch-pit concentrations at places where particles had been removed may be the result of deformation accompanying the fracture of the sintered bond. That this is not so was demonstrated by breaking off particles around which no etch pits occurred. Re-etching never resulted in the large concentrations observed at sintering sites. The stress available to effect material movement during sintering of two particles will depend on the geometry at the contact point but can easily exceed the macroscopic yield stress in CaFz systems. It appears that the plastic deformation observed results from sintering or simply from the weight of the small particles. It has been previously argued that plastic flow makes an important contribution to the initial densification of oxides having the fluorite crystal structure.2p3 If plastic deformation occurs, it would begin as soon as the temperature is sufficiently high

IN the last two years the E.C.P.D. committees having to do with the inspection of engineering schools for possible accrediting have been concerned with the engineering content of some of the mineral industries courses. Originally the discussion arose with regard to engineering geology, or geological engineering, afterward broadening to metallurgical engineering, ceramic engineering, agricultural engineering, and other branches not pertinent to this discussion. Some members of visiting committees took the attitude that they probably would have to accredit these types of training as included in the engineering group if they met the average standard set by the mining schools, though they questioned -whether they were really engineering.

RECENTLY, we were asked to name the greatest contribution to progress in mining technology during the past 25 years. Immediately, the introduction of the pneumatic hammer for making blastholes came to mind because it can be credited with speeding the excavation of rock and the elimination of hand drilling. Possibly this answer was so spontaneous because we were working on this "drilling issue" Of MINING ENGINEERING. Present drilling tools have devel¬oped so rapidly, that a great deal of engineering is. required in the selection of bits, steel, and machines for the drilling conditions at each mine. Formerly a modicum of engineering was utilized in selection of equipment for it was purchased from manufacturer preference. With the development of alloy drill steels, tungsten-carbide bits, throwaway bits, and the jackleg drill, mining companies began doing more experimental work before making selections. It is unfortunately true, that each operator must begin at the beginning by doing his own test work before choosing his drilling method, and tools. Some of this work has been done very well-under controlled conditions and obtaining proper data on the variables. Such data should be accumulated from the various mines, tabulated, and published. Such a volume would be of tremendous help to the small operator in selecting equipment and would permit the research departments of the larger companies to formulate some measure of rock drillability and to undertake more specialized research on the different phases of drilling.
