HOT-DIPPED heat-treated zinc coatings on sheet steel were examined with X-rays. The phases identified were compared with those listed in the modern literature of the zinc-iron system. The zeta (FeZn13) phase is shown to correspond to the phase found by Schueler (1925) in heat-treated zinc coatings. An investigation was undertaken to determine the phases present in hot-dipped FIG. This kind of coating on wire was studied some years ago by Schueler1 by microscopic and chemical methods. He reported a new phase, FeZn10. Later, Clark and Stillwell,2 using X-ray crystal analysis, identified a new phase in ordinary galva-nized wire, which was assumed to be the FeZn10 phase.

Arthur Jarman, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia (communication to the Secretary*):—All designs for modern metallurgical and chemical laboratories should provide each student's desk with a hood or cupboard for the removal of fumes, but I doubt the advisability of placing air-baths and similar apparatus close to the hot plate. It seems to me that unless the draft be exceptionally strong the fumes from ordinary wet assay work will corrode the iron-work of the fittings, in which case the baths would have to be removed to a general desk in order to lighten the work of the laboratory attendant. Since the laboratory described by Mr. White has been in use for two years, I should like to ask if any inconvenience has resulted from this corrosion. If not, it is certainly an important improvement to have the air-baths and similar apparatus placed on the student's desk. The hoods described by Mr. White are supplied with a good draft by means of a fan, which gives them a great advantage

DURING the last three decades a great many arguments have been presented on the subject of "mosaic" or "block" structures of metals. Apparently because of insufficient evidence, the "block-structure" theories have never been widely understood among the physical metallurgists in this country, and most investigators among the few that have tried to demonstrate the existence of such an inner structure of crystals or grains have failed to recognize also the existence of a lamellar structure. Moreover, little thought has been given to justify the existence of such "lamellar" or "mosaic-block" structures on a theoretical basis. Since properties such as plasticity, ferromagnetism, hardness, diffusion, and others may be explained by structural faults in the lattice network of the crystals, the great importance of a more detailed knowledge of the structure within crystals or grains becomes now evident. Because of the vast extent of the field of submicroscopic structures, it shall be the purpose of this paper only to review the more important of the results obtained by other investigators, especially in Germany, where a great deal of attention has been given to mosaic structure during the last three years. The origin of this mosaic pattern f and effects of cold reduction and recrystallization will be shown in further studies later on. IMPERFECTIONS IN CRYSTALS The many terms used in the literature to denote structural types of crystals are often not clearly defined. To clear up some of the confusion, the meaning of the more important terms will be given here. Ideal, or Perfect Crystals.-Crystals without any structural imperfections are called "ideal crystals," or "perfect crystals," meaning a homogeneous interior structure of atoms, ions or molecules, as the case may be. In other words, at every point in the interior of the crystal exactly the same orientation of the crystallographic axes of the coordinate system would exist. The surface of such a body, if etched with an appropriate etching reagent, would reflect light with perfect uniformity. Crystals of this type are almost nonexistent. Real Crystals.-" Real crystals"' may contain various types of structural defects, which can be classified into: (I) lineage structure, (2) mosaic-block structure, (3) lamellar structure. The inhomogeneities existing in these groups mean that the orientation of the crystallographic axes will not be the same at every point within the interior of a crystal (or grain of a polycrystalline body). Perfect Real Crystals.-The term "perfect real crystals" is generally used to describe crystals with minute structural or thermodynamical inhomogeneities. The former

AT the last meeting of the Institute, a discussion arose upon the question, Is there pressure in coke ovens?" and many of the members seemed to think that the superiority of the Belgian furnace might be due to the fact that it is a completely closed chamber, in which the gases given off by the coal are, or may be, at more than the atmospheric reassure. It seems to me that this position is untenable, 'and that an examination of one of these ovens in operation will show, not only that there is no excess of pressure in the coke chamber, but that the contrary is true, and a partial vacuum exists. The Belgian or Francoise oven consists of a rectangular chamber closed at the ends by sliding doors, and furnished with flues in the side walls and floor. The new charge is introduced at a time when the furnace is so hot as to cause immediate and copious discharge of the volatile constituents of the coal. The gases pass downwards through the side flues giving out their heat to the walls and thus to the coal. Underneath the floor air is introduced and the gases burn, producing intense heat. Heat is also reflected from the arched roof upon the coal which is therefore heated from all sides. The especial advantage which this construction was designed to secure is that no air is admitted to the coke-chamber. All the heat is produced by the combustion of the unsociable gases, and the yield ought to be a maximum. IN the nonferrous sessions this year, magnesium wiggled its way into a dace of prominence such as it has never before enjoyed. This was evidenced not only by the number of papers presented on that metal but by the attendance at the meetings. The atmosphere permeating these magnesium meetings was similar to that which exists in a family with a new baby. Everybody crowded around to see what it looked like and then wondered whether it would be a success and credit to the family. Well. magnesium appeared to be a vigorous youngster, full of life, and raring to go. A close relative of maenesium named " aluminum, although much more grown up, also attracted much attention. Laboratory relative permeability data on reservoir rock are obtained on samples which are not subjected to overburden pressure during the permeability measurements. These data are then used for calculating the performance characteristics of reservoirs in which the rock is under the pressure of the overburden. Recent observations have shown that the permeability and porosity of reservoir sandstones are decreased by application of overburden pressure. These observations led us to a study of the effect of overburden pressure on the relative permeability characteristics of sandstones. A previous note from this laboratory1 showed that overburden pressure, simulated by applying hydraulic pressure to the outside of a plastic mounted core. caused a reduction in permeability of the core by as much as 50 per cent at 10,000 psig. In a multiphase fluid flow system, the relative permeability at a given saturation will change if the permeability or the effective permeability changes but not if both permeability and effective permeability change by the same ratio. The tests described in this note were made to determine the effect of overburden pressure on permeability and effective gas permeability in the gas-oil system. The gas-oil system was chosen because the available equipment was best suited for studying this system. The resultant data can be applied to other systems of interest because the gas permeability in the gas-oil system is the permeability of the nonwetting phase and, as such, is equivalent to the gas permeability in the gas-oil-water system and to the oil permeability in the oil-water system. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Cylindrical test plugs, one in. in diameter and one in. long, were cut from sandstone core samples from three different reservoirs. After extraction in toluene, the plugs were mounted in Lucite by conventional core mounting methods.3 The core properties are given in the legend in Fig. 1. The mounted cores were machined to fit the apparatus shown in Fig 4. Air permeabilities as a function of overburden pressure were measured by connecting lines (1) and (2) to a conventional air permeameter. To measure porosity changes as a function of overburden pressure, the lines leading to (1) and (2) and the core were saturated with kerosene; line (1) was capped and a small bore precision calibrated pipet was connected to (2). Changes in pore volume of the core as overburden pressure was applied were noted by reading the amount of kerosene produced into the pipet. To correct for the change in volume of the lines inside the hydraulic cell as a function of pressure, a pressure-vs-volume run was made with a solid Lucite cylinder substituted for the core. The change in volume of the lines was about 10 per cent of the change in pore volume of the core. No correction was needed for the permeability measurements because there was no measurable pressure drop in the lines at the maximum overburden pressure. Relative gas permeabilities were measured by the stationary liquid method described by Osoba, et al.' For many years large mining companies were able to finance nearly all of their capital requirements from internally generated funds. However, during the last decade, funds needed for capital expenditures, dividends, and scheduled debt retirement have grown faster than cash flow. As a result the minerals industry has had to rely increasingly on other sources of funds. Getting the capital for new mining projects is a challenge, particularly for smaller companies. New methods of financing and new variations to old methods have been developed and more are needed. Commercial banks are short-term lenders. By policy their loans are limited to low risk loans-those made solely on the borrower's general credit, and secured loans where cash flow is sufficient to provide repayment within a comparatively short term. To maintain liquidity, banks prefer to make loans of less than seven years' term. If a longer loan is needed an insurance company or pension trust may take the long-term part.

Olivine is a mineral containing a mixture of forsterite (Mg,SiO,) and fayalite (Fe,SiO,) in solid solution. The name "olivine" was first applied by Werner in 1790 (Hunter, 1941) because of the olive-green color of the mineral. Uses The principal use of olivine is in various foundry applications. Perhaps the largest tonnage is utilized as a special foundry sand for mold-making in brass, aluminum, and magnesium foundries (Schaller, 1957, 1958; Snyder, 1957). Olivine was first used as an industrial mineral in the early 1930s for a refractory material (Anon., 1970; Hunter, 1941). As a refractory raw material, olivine was first introduced in the United States as handcobbed, selected, shaped blocks of crude olivine. This use met with limited success. More recently, finely ground olivine blended with MgO and pressed into bricks, which are then fired, have found use in glass tank furnaces and open-hearth furnaces. Ramming or gunning mixes for basic furnace linings also utilize olivine. Olivine has been used in ladle linings with varied success. In Europe, substantial tonnages of olivine are utilized in refractory brick for night storage heaters (Anon., 1970). A limited amount of olivine has been used in the past as a fertilizer (magnesium source) and has been fused with rock phosphate to produce a magnesium phosphate as a plant food. The relatively high magnesia (MgO) content of olivine also attracted attention to it as a potential source of both magnesium compounds and as a source of metallic magnesium (Bengston, 1956; Hunter, 1941). Industries using olivine have not standardized specifications. Normally, producers supply a product which meets individual customer requirements. Such requirements involve type and amount of impurities, grain size of product, refractory characteristics, etc. Geology Olivine occurs commonly as accessories in basic igneous and basic metamorphic rocks. Economic deposits are of magmatic origin and are restricted to essentially the dunite variety of periodotite. Dunites are medium to coarse- grained crystalline rocks, generally reddish brown on weathered outcrop, and are composed primarily of olivine.

In the mineral industry measurement of density or specific gravity of slurries is often necessary or highly desirable. To date the most successful method of measuring the specific gravity of various media is to hand weigh a constant volume sample of the slurry. This method is time-consuming, however, and is intermittent rather than continuous. Most density measuring instruments in use today are variations of three basic systems: air bubble tube systems, radioactive methods, and displacer systems. The high cost of the radioactive cell, combined with the precision electronic measuring that is required, limits the practical utility of this procedure to a small percentage of critical processes. In the air bubble systems clogging of the bubble tubes with solids has rendered this type of measurement completely ineffectual for many applications. Continuous or intermittent purging of the bubble tubes with air or water to prevent tube clogging has been tried but has not been very successful, especially in the heavy media process.

IT is proposed to consider here only comparisons made between results obtained when the materials employed are precisely the same, two furnaces at the same works for example, or the same furnace under different conditions as respects temperature of blast, method of charging, etc. With this limitation, the most important point in the comparison is the amount of fuel consumed per ton of iron. This paper discusses coal-cleaning plant environmental hazards and installation philosophies that can protect the computer. Specific reference is made to a computer system installed at the Electric Power Research Institute's Coal-Cleaning Test Facility.
