ALTHOUGH surveying at mining properties is fundamentally the same regardless of the method of mining, at Climax, due to the nature of the ground, the policy of advance development work, and extremes in climatic conditions, surveying practice has had to be revised to meet the specialized conditions of this particular type of mining operation. The company's mine is one of the largest underground properties in the United States. It has proved ore reserves of 275,000,000 tons, 60,000,000 tons of which have been broken. To date, 109,000 ft. of development drifting have been driven, as well as 40,926 ft. of development raising, 10,000 ft. of ventilation drifting and raising, 16,000 ft. of exploration drifting, and 206,000 ft. of diamond drilling. Normal production varies between 1.2,000 and 15,000 tons daily. Development work proceeds at a rate of 11/2 tons developed for every ton milled and with a development of 18,000 to 20,000 tons per day, the following crew is required to take care of mine and surface engineering

Of the outstanding investigators of the system iron-carbon-silicon Gontermann,1 Charpy and Cornu-Thenard,= and Honda,3 only the first touched on the chemical composition of the solid and liquid phases in equilibrium with one another. He concluded that his data did not permit a decision as to which of an indefinitely large number of pairs of compositions of liquid and solid would be found in any given case. If through the three dimensional equilibrium diagram of the iron-carbon-silicon system an isothermal plane is passed in the region of partial solidification, two lines of intersection with the liquidus and solidus, respectively, are obtained, also a point marking the alloys' composition. If, in this plane, a straight line is drawn through the point, and intersecting both the liquidus and solidus isothermals, the two intersections mark a liquid and a solid alloy that may be chemically in equilibrium at the chosen temperature. From thermal data alone, Gontermann could not assign any particular direction to the line and, hence, could not determine which pair of conjugate points to choose, A separation of the liquid and solid for analysis, obviously, presents grave experimental difficulties. During the solidification of white cast iron, austenite of progressively higher carbon will separate as the temperature falls and cementite will appear suddenly at the freezing point of the eutectic. This cementite will be accompanied by a corresponding amount of austenite which, for our purpose, will be chemically inseparable from the primary austenite. We have attempted to decide on the conditions at the end of the freezing by a chemical separation applied to the solid metal.

Passage of the Mining Act of 1866, superseded by the Act of 1872, was the first major entry of the Federal Government into the problems of mining. Such a law was necessary simply to help re- solve a number of disputes in mining. Now, however, a hundred years later, the extent of government involvement in the mineral industry often comes as a shock to the mining engineer who has reached management level. In fact, he has been poorly prepared for an understanding of the role of government in the industry and he becomes frustrated, even hostile. In our political system, private industry is responsible for producing minerals and the Government sees to it that production will be adequate for a peace-time economy and for any emergency. There have been great social and political changes since World War I1 with the result that the Government's participation in our society has steadily increased. A new dimension in business and government relations has been introduced which should be examined more closely.

GEOLOGY is of service to man in two general ways according to Heinrich Ries in The Scientific Month-ly. The first of these is in exploring and evaluating the mineral resources on which industry and civiliza-tion are built, and the second is the application of geo-logic principles to various lines of human activity, such as engineering, agriculture, chemistry, etc. Both of these are phases of economic or applied geology, but neither could be developed before geology as a pure science was more or less firmly established, and in this process it freely acknowledges its indebted-ness to some of its older sister sciences such as chem-istry, physics, botany and zoology. Chemistry and geology are mutually helpful. Various chemical industries consume large quantities of raw mineral products, but since these vary in their purity and composition, it is important for the chemist to be familiar with the irregularities of composition which the different types may show, because he is often called upon to pass judgment on new sources of supply. Here geology helps the chemist. On the other hand, the laws of physical chemistry which the chemist has worked. out are of great assistance to the geologist in explaining many geologic processes.

It has been shown1 that in poly-crystalline strips of high purity aluminum with a fairly random orientation distribution, grain growth progresses gradually until the average grain diameter reaches a value approximately equal to the strip thickness. Recent work at this laboratory led to the realization that grain growth might be impeded to a considerable extent in the presence of a sharply defined texture, where orientation differences between neighboring grains are small. In order to investigate this effect the following experiment was carried out with the same lot of high purity aluminum previously used for grain growth studies in randomly oriented material.' Very large grain size was developed by grain growth at 650°C in specimens of 0.200 in. thickness. These specimens were then rolled to a thickness of 0.050 in. or 1.25 mm—a reduction of 75 pct. In the rolled strip each large grain corresponded to an elongated area easily identified by etching. After annealing for 1 to 25 min at 600°C and re-etching, these elongated areas were again recognizable. Within each area, corresponding to a single large grain before annealing, there formed by recrystallization a multitude of new grains with a fairly well developed preferred orientation. The orientation and the size of the new grains formed in areas corresponding to different large grains, varied widely depending on the orientation of the parent grains with respect to the rolling direction and the plane of rolling. Many areas were found where the average grain size was considerably smaller than the specimen thickness. Such an area occurred in a specimen cut in half before annealing. One half, containing a portion of the area in question, was annealed 1 min at 600°C, the other half, with the remaining portion of this area, for 25 min at the same tempera-Aluminum killed low carbon steel, § which is now used extensively for severe deep drawing or other difficult forming operations, is unusual in that its grain structure, after cold reduction and box annealing in accordance with conventional continuous sheet or strip mill practice, often is elongated, although at times it is equiaxed. Since this unusual structure has been found superior for many, but not all, severe forming operations, recrystallization of the steel, both at constant temperature and on continuous heating, was investigated and compared with that of rimmed steel in the hope that something might be learned about the mechanism of, and the factors controlling, the formation of such elongated grains. In this structure, the grains are elongated both in the lengthwise direction of the strip and transverse to this direction, even though nearly all of the extension in both hot and cold rolling is in the lengthwise direction. The grains are thus roughly pancake-shaped, being longer and wider than they are thick, as observed also by Burns and McCabe,1 and as illustrated by the typical structures shown in Fig 1. Fig la, representing a conventional longitudinal section, shows the length and thickness of the grains, whereas Fig Ib shows their length and width as seen by examining a section parallel to the sheet surface. Both illustrate the very irregular grain boundaries usually associated with the elongated grain shape. A finer equiaxed grain structure in this same grade is shown in Fig Ic. Either the elongated or the equiaxed structure may be present in the annealed product, and in rare instances the two types may coexist in a single specimen, as shown in Fig 1 d. Isothermal Recrystalliza-tion of Rimmed and Alamimum Killed Steel An aluminum killed steel known to have an elongated grain structure after conventional processing (Steel B, Table l), was selected for the initial recrystallization studies; for comparison, a rimmed steel, A in Table 1, was used. Samples of each in the form of hot rolled strip 0.075 and 0.095 in. thick, respectively, were cold rolled on a small laboratory mill in steps of about 0.010 in. per pass to obtain total reductions of 40 and 60 pct. Small pieces of the cold reduced strip were heated in lead at selected constant temperatures for one of several periods of time, then cooled in air. Rate of heating in the lead was, of course, very fast. Hardness of the cooled specimen was measured and a longitudinal section examined metallographically. Isothermal recrystallization curves for these two steels at 1050°F, based on hardness of the air cooled specimens, are shown in Fig 2 in which the amount of recrystallization corresponding to each plotted point is indicated. The marked difference in the behavior of these two types of steel is evident. After a corresponding amount of cold reduction, the rimmed steel recrys-tallizes in a much shorter time than the killed steel and the shape of its recrystallization curve, (plotted on a logarithmic time scale), is very different. The curve for rimmed steel indicates that recrystallization is analogous to isothermal transformation of aus-i.enite in that it proceeds at a progressively faster rate up to some 50 pct recrystallization, then at an increasingly slower rate. MANY producers have held that the only workable quicksilver ore is easily recognized by its .cinnabar content. In most cases this is true. A noticeable exception is a. particular opalite deposit where part of the ore now being mined in considerable quantity shows only the yellow mineral, calomel, or its alteration products. This mineral, on exposure to the sunlight, quickly becomes coated with gray or black layers that may be removed by scraping to reveal the yellow mineral beneath. The blackening of this mercuric chloride on exposure to sunlight shows reaction to form metallic mercury, which is usually plainly present in this class of ore.

In response to the growing demand for low-sulfur coking coal for iron-making, the coal industry is continually striving to perfect methods for cleaning coal to acceptable ash and sulfur levels while maintaining maximum product yield. By present standards the industry has adequate processes for cleaning coarse coal, (i.e., +28 mesh) at almost any desired specific gravity. However, in the case of fine coal (i.e., -28 mesh) neither of the two existing processes-froth flotation and hydrocycloning-in its present state of development yields products that are comparable in ash and/or sulfur content to products normally obtained from coarse coal processes. The work outlined in this article is part of a larger study directed toward maximum exploitation of froth flotation for fine coal processing. The concepts and data presented are now serving as a basis for designing fine-coal circuits in which improved efficiency is obtained by optimum use of froth flotation with other fine-coal processing methods.

MEETING OF SAN FRANCISCO SECTION Twenty members were present at the meeting of the San Francisco Section, May 20, 1919. Chairman Bradley being in Alaska, vice-chairman, T. A. Rickard, presided. Prof. Frank H. Probert gave a short account of the activities of the governmental commission, consisting of himself, George S. Rice, and F. G. Cottrell, which recently visited Europe, and studied the coal, iron, salt, and chemical industries. When the work is finished reports will he issued. He gave a resume of the history of. the changes in nationality of Alsace-Lorraine and 'described the importance of the region for coal, iron, and potash. With the return of these provinces France will have an annual output of more iron ore than she has coke to smelt it with; hence, the importance of the Saar coal field. With these new mines France will take the predominant position in the iron and steel-industry formerly held by Germany. Many details were given of the devastated mines of France, and of their former value, production and the destruction that overtook them. Noteworthy is it that much of the damage was done as late as Oct. 28, 1918, for the express purpose of ruining the country industrially. The damaged area of the Valenciennes coal basin embraced twenty-four concessions, three were damaged by artillery bombardment, but have resumed operations since the' armistice, nine had their surface: equipment destroyed by battle, pillage, and sabotage, while twelve concessions at the eastern-end of-the field suffered from wilful, systematic destruction. Of the 285 shafts in the district, 172 were flooded either by: turning surface streams into them, or, by wrecking the cuvellage; thus, admitting water and quicksand from the water-bearing strata above the coal measures. Two hundred and thirty-five surface plants were damaged, many of them to such an extent that they must be scrapped. These properties gave employment to 135,000 men before the war and, even admitting the remote possibility of getting workmen, the terrible destruction and devastation makes housing and living a difficult problem. It will probably be from 3 to 5 years before the mines are drained and information obtained as to underground conditions; to attain the pre-war output may require from 12 to 15 years.

The causes that have formed fissures in the earth's crust, and the agencies that have converted them into metallic beds, are amongst the most important and interesting subjects that can engage the attention of the mining engineer or the scientist. They lie at the very base of the whole system of vein geology, and until something like a correct theory can be arrived at with regard to them, the science as such is necessarily very incomplete. he data for such a theory, owing to a lack of careful and systematic observations in countries pre-eminently metalliferous, like Mexico and the States of Central and South America, are almost entirely wanting. Doubtless there has been abundant speculation on the subject, from the earliest times down to the present, in every country where mining has been one of the leading industries of the inhabitants. Perhaps the theory of Elie de Beaumont more nearly approaches a satisfactory explanation than that of any contemporary authority. The most recent investigations, both in Europe and on this continent, tend to produce the conviction that the phenomena of metallic fissure lodes are in some way connected with, and dependent upon, plutonic agencies— not, however, as the direct product of volcanic activity, but rather as the result of chemical agencies called into play through its aid. Active volcanoes generally produce only the well-known types of volcanic rocks, though, perhaps, well-marked cases can be shown where these contain ores of copper, etc., evidently derived from the same deepseated source as their hypogene gangue. To prove that there is a connection between metallic lodes and plutonic rocks, it is not necessary that the ores should in all cases occupy fissures within the limits of masses of propylite, rhyolite, or other like rocks, or be

THIS annual lecture, under the auspices of the Institute of Metals Division, and which was illus- trated by lantern slides, has been printed in full and a limited number are available for distribution on request. Some excerpts from the lecture are given below: Ever since the simple geometrical relations of crystals were discovered, it has been recognized that their proper-ties are best explained by assuming that their ultimate particles are arranged on a space lattice, and that the char-acteristics of that lattice determine the shape of the crystal and its physical and mechanical properties. Modern ex-amination by means of X-rays has widened that concep-tion and given it greater; definiteness, and the atoms are now regarded as the particles forming the space lattice. The splendid achievements of investigators in this field have made it possible to state, for a large number of sub-stances, the form and dimensions of the lattice. The char-acteristic of a lattice is that a unit of simple geometrical form is repeated at regular intervals in three dimensions so as to fill the entire crystal. It follows that there must be certain planes in which the atoms are more closely packed than in planes drawn at any angle to them, and it is these planes of closest packing which play the greatest part in determining the growth and other properties of the crystal. There are actually two stages in crystallization, what-ever be the medium in which it occurs. The first is the ap-pearance of crystal nuclei; the second the growth of those nuclei to form crystals of appreciable .size. The first is clearly a kinetic phenomenon. In the molten mass, solu-tion, or vapor, the molecules are in a state of rapid motion and frequent collision. When the temperature has fallen so far. that it is possible for a crystal to exist, a few col-liding molecules may fail to rebound, and so become at-tached to one another, the balance between the attracting and repelling forces-between them causing them to arrange themselves on a space lattice, to which other molecules sub-sequently attach themselves. It was once maintained that the X-ray evidence demanded that the molecule should dis-appear in the solid crystal, but this was a wrong inference, and in many crystals, but not in all, the chemical molecule retains its identity in the solid state. In pure metals the atom and the molecule are identical, so that the conditions are unusually simple. How many. nuclei will be formed in a given mass is evi-dently a problem in probability. Experiments to deter-mine the relation between the temperature and the number of nuclei formed in a given time have been made with some success by using viscous organic substances, but metals offer much greater difficulties, and the few determinations which have been published are vitiated by serious errors. However, the examination of sections of ingots of the same composition and cast at 'the same temperature in similar molds will show, that the number of crystals does not vary widely.

This paper is a resume of some of the accomplishments in direct rolling of strip from molten metal, and a description of some experimental developments in recent years. In all the early developmental work, we used a pair of rolls with a bath of metal between them, maintained by flanges or plates at the ends of the rolls. These flanges produced an excess cooling of the metal and built up enormous pressures at this point as the metal went through the bight of the rolls. Many means were tried for compensating for this excess cooling, such as thickening the strip at the edges, heating the end dams directly or by flowing more of the molten metal against them, leaving an open crotch below the end dam and above the bight of the roll, where the excessive pressures built up could be relieved by some of the metal squeezing out at this point, and so forth. All of these helped somewhat to solve the problem, so that very large heats of many metals melting up to 200°F., having commercially uniform gauges, could be rolled up to 24 in. in width. The rolls were made by mounting heavy rings on heavy shafts, and pressures up to 75,000 lb. per inch in width were used. Cooling of the rolls was generally done by spraying water on the outside surface of the rolls that came in contact with the molten metal. Roll life was commercial with brass, barely satisfactory with copper, and totally impractical with steels. The greatest difficulty encountered in all this work was caused by lack of uniformity in the product, owing to a folding action in the mill. Those who are familiar with the operation of a rolling mill know that a bar entering a mill moves at a lower speed than the peripheral speed of the roll. However, the metal solidifying from a bath in a direct rolling mill is cast at exactly the peripheral speed of the roll. This results in irregular folding of the metal, some irregular remelting of the previously solidified sections, and it is difficult, if not impossible, in some cases to exert enough pressure to weld these folded sections sufficiently into a sound product. In addition to this melange of solid, semisolid and liquid metal in the bath, we know that pressure near the freezing point of any alloy in which the constituents have different melting points—and I believe all of them have—causes the lower-melling-point constituent to be squeezed back until it becomes cold enough to solidify and go through the mill. This segregates all alloys, the segregation increasing with the pressures and the freezing ranges of the metals. Add to these problems the excessive roll-maintenance costs with high-melting-point metals and then, the greatest difficulty of all, the vanity of homo sapiens where a matter of possibly large importance is being considered, and the problems seemed almost insuperable. It was long ago obvious to me that something much more than the size of a corporation's money and self-assuradce was necessary if this process was to be made commercial. I should like to show you first the performance of the only mill we ever really designed and built, to see what might be done with a well constructed mill. THE year 1936 has seen rehabilitation of many plants which had been closed or severely curtailed. The Steptoe smelter of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. has been transformed by a rearrangement of the flow of material and utilization of mechanical handling to a maximum. The Phelps Dodge Corp. reports the construction of newer and better reverberatories at the Copper Queen smelter, and of particular interest, a single high-pressure waste-heat boiler placed directly over the uptake. There has also been a complete reconstruction of the smelter at the Laurel Hill plant of the Nichols Copper Co.

All mining and milling enterprises must be based on adequate ore reserves. Reserves must be established by physical exploration, and the orebody should be of sufficient size and grade to insure recovery of capital invested in mine purchase, development, and mill construction and to provide a reasonable profit. Determination of these economic factors is so complicated, and present costs of mine development and construction so great, that analysis can be made only by competent persons qualified by experience in this field. What rate for maximum efficiency? Unfortunately, even today mills are built before deposits have been adequately outlined, and there are rusting monuments to such folly in nearly every mining region. Also there is a tendency to be guided by the philosophy that "if a little is good, a lot is better," which leads to the conclusion that mining at a given rate and making so much per ton will yield a profit of so many dollars per day. Consequently, why not build a mill to treat twice as much per day and make twice as much money?

G. SHERBURNE LAGERS (written discussion*).-Mr. Kennedy's discussion1 of Mr. Matteson's paper takes the form of a criticism of my own comments2 on this paper. Mr. Kennedy is a respected authority on matters pertaining to the salt-dome oil fields, and his characterization of my "elaborate figures" as "worthless" is sufficiently candid and comprehensive to warrant a brief reply. My "voluminous figures" consisted simply of a rough estimate of the minimum quantity of salt in the Humble dome, and a calculation of the volume of sea water and of the volume of saturated brine which this salt would represent. Mr. Kennedy apparently interprets my remarks as opposing the idea that so large a volume of salt could have been deposited from sea water, for lie cites the area and thickness of European salt beds; but nothing was further from my intention. Given an arm of the sea, an arid climate, and evaporation under a hot sun, it is easy to conceive the formation: of almost any thickness of bedded salt. I cited the figures in connection with Harris' theory of the origin of salt domes, according to which the plugs were formed by the deposition of salt from ascending brine solutions, owing to the drop in temperature as they neared the surface. I pointed out the well-known fact that the solubility of salt is only slightly affected by temperature, and that a drop of 80° C. would cause the deposition of less than one-tenth of the salt in solution; hence that more than ten times the volume of salt actually forming the plug must have been involved. If ten times the salt actually in sight be computed in terms of brine and multiplied by 50 or 60 to take into account all of the known salt domes, the resulting figure is so enormous that I am not at all as sure as Mr. Kennedy seems to be that the porous stratified rocks of eastern Texas and western Louisiana could contain or furnish so great a volume of migratory brine.

THE graphic methods and records described in this article have been developed, with satisfactory results, for the use of executives of the Chino Copper Co., in Hurley, N. Mex. Particular attention is directed to the use of large wall-charts, the quick reference display of large charts, the scale notation of metallurgical charts, the inclusion of mesh extraction on screen analysis diagrams. To properly comprehend the operation and metallurgical results from a concentrating plant, a daily record of essential data is kept, usually involving the dry weight of ore milled or treated, dry weight of concentrate or metal produced, assay values of heading, assay values of tailing, assay values of concentrate, and percentage of extraction or recovery. In addition it is often necessary to record moisture, pulp density, or dilution; percentage of weight of oils and reagents employed; screen analyses of grinding conditions, oversize, etc.; assay values of non-valuable or interfering substances; cost data; and such special information as may be required.

MOST of us will, I think, agree that never before in the history of the coal industry has the human side of our business been so important as today. Since, even in wholly mechanized mining, labor cost is such a large percentage of out total cost we are all deeply concerned not only about the present attitude of our employees but particularly about the future, when the industry returns to a "survival of the fittest" basis. Many things could and should be done about our employee relations in the coal business. Failure to recognize these obligations and do something about them may lead to serious consequences, the least serious of which will be the loss not only of many of our better employees but a large portion of our potential employees, as they graduate from our schools to other in¬dustries. Some of these things should be handled by the industry as a whole whereas others should be done by individual companies. Due to varying conditions and size of organizations it would, at best, be necessary to vary a program to meet the individual needs of each operator.
