Want of knowledge on the part of experts from abroad respecting the amalgamation-system, known as the Mexican or patio process, has been the cause in this country of trouble to many foreign mining companies. This process has not been looked upon by their managers as a satisfactory method of treating silver-ores, and they prefer to employ others, which, although more modern, and often more profitable in other countries, have not proved to be so under the exceptional conditions of this country, where labor is cheap and paid in silver, while fuel is very dear. The cause of this error of judgment is probably the inexact information which has been furnished by several authors respecting the economical results of the patio process. This treatment is not suitable for silver-ores of every kind. Simple sulphides of silver are best adapted to it, and, next to these, the combinations of complex sulphides, viz., pyrargyrite, polybasite, stephanite, proustite, etc. Chlorides, bromides and iodides of silver are considered rebellious ; argentiferous galena, blende, bournonite, as also argentiferous arsenical pyrites of iron and copper, are absolutelg unsuited to this treatment. Experience has proved that high-grade ores do not give as satisfactory results as those of mediurn grades, as, for instance, carrying from 1 to 2 kilos of silver per metrical ton. The patio process, as actually practiced in this district, comprises the following operations: 1. The ore is crushed in a dry state in a roller-mill, reducing it to pea-size, from which uniform samples, and, in consequence, correct assays, can be obtained. 2. It is then thrown into the arrastra, and pulverized with water, so fine that it will pass through an 80-mesh screen.

The task of developing controls in the mining and manufacturing industries to give them a tighter grip on operating costs has afforded this author an interesting vantage point for observing certain practices common to both industries. Of course, each of these industries has problems unique to itself, but all industries have many common problems. After all, every industry is a business and every business is concerned with the task of producing its wares as profitably as possible. While many differences between businesses in different industries are known, the author is convinced through experience that the mining industry has much more in common with the manufacturing industry than is generally acknowledged. Four principal questions come to mind in the comparison of mining with manufacturing: How different are the management control methods in these two worlds? How do both industries go about the task of controlling costs? How does the mining industry compare in terms of the effectiveness of its workers? And perhaps most important, what can the mining industry learn from what the manufacturing industry is doing?

There are two methods employed in the development of oil pools. The older and dominant method is one in which the primary object is the protection of the underground deposit from drainage through competing wells, and considerations of efficiency of extraction and cost of production are subordinated thereto. The newer and less prevalent method is one in which maximum efficiency and minimum cost are the first objectives and developments to these ends may proceed undisturbed by the exigencies of competitive drainage. The second method has developed mainly in pools under single ownership and the term "unit operation" has come to be applied to this procedure. A single ownership, however, is not essential to the method, for unity of operation may be achieved by agreement under split ownership, or even by a concert of enlightened purpose. There are examples of unit operation where neither the ownership nor the management is a unit, but merely where unity of procedure has been attained, as in the Yates pool. Throughout this paper "unit operation" is used in its broad sense without implying sole ownership or single management, although unit operation is more conveniently attained where these conditions are present. It is evident, upon reflection, that the second method should yield results far superior to the first, for the work of exploitation can be conducted without extraneous considerations and the natural forces present in the oil reservoir can be utilized to maximum advantage. Experience has amply confirmed this conclusion and were the facts widely known and appreciated, the efforts to extend the applications of the principle of unitization would be greatly intensified. Competitive Development of Oil Pools It has come about that the vast majority of oil pools, or reservoirs, in the United States are subdivided by numerous surface tracts under separate ownerships. This condition arises from the prevalent practice in the oil business of acquiring prospective acreage in checkerboard spreads. This paper attempts to close the gap between extensive rock testing with field measurements and the mine operator's need for safe mine layouts and alternatives. It was found that many of the variables that influence mine geometry and worker safety are relatively unimportant while others are critical. The development of empirical relationships that tie the critical variables to the safe useful life of a trona mine layout and observations made in 140 production areas where the variables were researched over a 15-year period are discussed. The concepts presented may have applicability in mine design for other bedded deposits.

An economic geologist is concerned primarily with finding deposits of economic value, estimating their tenor and quantity, their shape and position. Thus the primary problems can largely be lumped under three headings: position, character and quantity; and all three are phases of the broader problem of genesis. Distribution, tenor and quantity are of immediate practical importance and are studied constantly by all who exploit mineral deposits. Although the emphasis changes from year to year, the problems of genesis seem more remote and rarely get the serious consideration from the field man that the other three do. Our understanding of the problems of the genesis of mineral deposits has come largely as a by-product of more evidently utilitarian work in the past, and probably will continue to grow in the same manner lor many years to come. However, it might be economically fruitful for the producers to have many competent investigators spending their time chiefly on the problems of genesis of mineral deposits. Many years ago, when first engaged in work for the United States Geological Survey in Colorado, I expressed a conviction which was just then dawning on me by saying that economic geology was turning out to be 80 per cent structural geology, to which Mr. B. S. Butler replied, "Yes, and more than 80 per cent of structural geology is lithology." At the present time there seems to be a widespread feeling among economic geologists that the problems of position or distribution are largely problems of structure and rock types. Types of Research Ptesearch in any branch of geology can be conveniently divided into two types: field research and laboratory research. Ideas are usually dug up in the field, pruned or developed in the laboratory, and taken back to the field for proving. For either the first or last step the field data should he as complete as possible, and the structural geology of nearly all our mineral deposits still needs more detailed delineation. In general, this means mapping on larger seales. Ideally the structural map should give a factual picture of a11 visible effects of stress; there is still room for vast improvement in the technique of presentation. Information that is much

It is usual practice in the copper industry to use open horizontal molds for casting tough-pitch copper wire bars.' A wire bar cast in this manner is partly characterized by heavy wrinkles and a comparatively deep skin of oxide on the top of the bar, corresponding to the open side of the mold. On the theory that the rough, high-oxide surface might have an adverse effect on the rolling and drawing properties of a wire bar and might account for some of the irregularities of mill behavior, several bars which had been planed to remove the wrinkled surface were processed into wire. These bars responded to mill treatment more satisfactorily than did the regular wire bars. Realizing that machining the surface of one face of each bar would not be commercially feasible, it was decided that casting the metal into a vertical mold and cropping off the pouring end would accomplish approximately the same result. Several wire bars of commercial size (250 Ib.) were so cast and processed into wire for comparative test with bars cast in the usual horizontal molds. It is the purpose of this paper to present the results obtained from this investigation, in which commercial bar sizes and processing technique were used throughout. The results show that in general copper wire bars cast vertically are superior to those cast horizontally. Experimental Procedure A horizontally cast bar and a vertically cast bar were obtained from each of several regular reverberatory furnace heats of copper which had been refined and poled to tough-pitch metal in accordance with usual methods.' Both bars were cast from the same part of the melt and within five minutes of each other, in order to produce as nearly as possible, in each case, wire bars of identical composition.

Various mathematical models and expressions to describe the behavior of a hydrocyclone have been presented in the literature (Lynch and Rao, 1977; Plitt, 1976; Plitt and Kawatra, 1977). Two of these models, by Lynch (1977) and by Plitt (1976), have been extensively used for process control studies (Kawatra and Thayer, 1879; Seitz and Kawatra, 1984). However, neither of these models relates the fineness of grind in a hydrocyclone overflow to the corrected efficiency curve of a hydrocyclone. If such a relationship were available, then one could relate fineness of grind to the operating variables using equation (1) or (2). A plant metallurgist is interested in knowing the fineness of grind rather than the dso(c) of a hydro- cyclone. As a consequence, several empirical relation- ships between fineness of grind and hydrocyclone operating variables are available. These relationships (Fewings, Wickham, and Wiseman, 1979; Manning, 1978; Watson, Cropton, and Brookes, 1970; Watts, Thompson, and White, 1978; Wiegal, 1973) have only a limited relationship with each other and have met with varying degrees of success. THE relationship between hardenability based on a 50 per cent martensite criterion, and that based on higher percentages of martensite in a number of low-alloy steels was discussed in a previous paper by the authors.1 It was found that the differences between the hardenability values based on the 50 per cent martensite and full martensite criterions increased as the hardenability increased and that, in the steels of higher hardenability, these differences were fairly large. Furthermore, it was found that these relationships could be expressed with reasonable accuracy as a function of the hardenability. The importance of the full martensite criterion of hardenability in relation to the attainment of the optimum mechanical properties of tempered martensite was emphasized in the earlier paper. The purpose of the present work is to study the effects of some of the individual alloying elements on hardenability, using three different percentages of martensite as criteria, and thereby to evaluate the role of these individual elements in the general hardenability relationships previously reported. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Induction-furnace heats weighing 17-lb., of the compositions given in Table I, were cast and forged into 1 ¼ in. round bars. All heats were killed with aluminum additions corresponding to 1 lb. per ton. The compositions were chosen to represent several series of steels, in which only one alloying element would vary and in which the nonmartensitic constituents on quenching would be predominantly bainitic. All bars were normalized from 1650°F. and tempered one hour at I 150°F. prior to the hardenability determinations. Hardenability values are based on metallographic examination of standard Jominy bars, quenched from 1600°F. (I hr. and 20 min. heating time). The general procedure was the same as outlined in detail in the previous paper; (I) that is, the distance from the quenched end of the bar to the point of 0.1 per cent transformation was first measured on the microscope and then the percentage of martensite was estimated at every 0.05 in. from the quenched end, and these percentage values plotted against the distance along the bar. In this case, samples 2 in. long were cut from the quenched end of the Jominy bars and 10 fields were examined and averaged at each distance. The conversion of Jominy distance to ideal diameter is based on a revised correlation curve (Fig. I). This curve is based on work carried out at the Research Department of the South Chicago Works, Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corporation, and represents a direct correlation between hardenability values as deter-

It appears that Utah is about to add another mining district to its already impressive roster. This time it is the Great Salt Lake, whose high-mineral content waters are being subjected to intensive study aimed toward the recovery of potassium, magnesium and lithium compounds by solar evaporation techniques. Among the firms conducting such experiments is Lithium Corporation of America, which, in a joint venture with West Germany's Salzdetfurth A.G., is operating evaporating ponds and running engineering tests at a site near Little Mountain, about ten miles west of Ogden. Here, on the clay flats along the northern portion of the lake, LCA holds leases and options totalling about 55,000 acres in the Bear River Basin.

ERLE VICTOR DAVELER, who in his application for membership in the Institute in 1909 modestly described himself as "millman," was born at Denver in 1885 and graduated from the University of California in 1907. After a few months' work at gold mills in California he went to Tonopah, where for the next two years he had a varied experience working on pumps, convey- ors, tube-mills and filters. For the following two years he was experimental foreman and metallurgical engineer for the Utah Copper Co. at Garfield. He was sent in 1911 to be assistant superintendent of mills at the Ray. From 1913 to 1917 he was mill superintendent at the striking but unsuccessful experiment in large-scale low-grade gold mining of the Alaska Gold Mines Co.

Summary INTRODUCTION The Chem-Seps Continuous Countercurrent Ion Exchange (CCIX) contactor was first conceived of in 1951 at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. In the 27 years that have passed, there has been a steady stream of pilot plant process development studies on a variety of processes far too numerous to mention. These have been in the area of water and waste treatment, chemical processing, ore leach treatment, and many others. Many successful production systems have been installed and operated in a variety of applications. A few of these are described herein together with a description of the system and its operational characteristics. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION Chem-Seps Continuous Countercurrent Ion Exchange* is a single loop in which various sections are separated by valves to isolate the sections performing different functions simultaneously. (Refer to Figure 1). To explain the working of a typical unit, let us use a simple configuration used in water softening or demineralization. The resin is moved in small increments by the hydraulic ram action. All solution flows are countercurrent to the flow of resin. The contaminants are removed in the process cycle and the resin is moved in the pulse cycle. A controller in the effluent stream from the treatment section senses the proper limit permissible in the effluent. In the process cycle, the influent enters through a set of distributors, moves downward and leaves through a set of collectors. Simultaneously the regenerant enters through valve RE and leaves through valve WA. The rinse enters through valve RI and its duration is controlled by an interface controller. In the process cycle, valves B, C, and D are closed, isolating all the sections. The duration of the process cycle is 4-10 minutes depending on the contaminants to be removed and is controlled either by a timer if the contaminants are fixed, or a controller in the effluent stream, if the contaminants fluctuate at short intervals. Valve A is open and resin is dropped to the pulse section simultaneously with the removal of contaminants in the treatment section, regeneration of loaded resin in the strip section, and rinsing of regenerated resin in the rinse section. As the resin drops through the valve A, it is backwashed to remove the suspended solids or resin fines. Removal of these fine particles is important to avoid the unnecessary pressure drop in the bed and plugging of the distributors. At the end of process cycle, all flows going into the unit and out of unit are automatically shut off. The valve A closes and valves B, C, and D open in proper sequence. A slug of water enters through valve PU, a predetermined incremental volume of resin moves into the regeneration section, an equal volume of regenerated and rinsed resin enters the bottom of the treatment section, and an equal volume of the loaded resin leaves the top of the treatment section and goes into the resin reservoir section. (The resin movement is plug flow with the Reynold's number being in the laminar region of the curve, and no fluidization occurs during the pulse cycle.) The total time required for proper sequencing of valves and the movement of resin is 20-30 seconds. At the end of this period, the valves B, C, and D close and valve A opens. The solution valves open and normal steady state operation begins. All valves are interlocked and properly sequenced. The resin movement is precisely controlled by sonic devices. Special Features of Chem-Seps CIIX "Downflow"*: The raw feed in the treatment section moves downward and the resin moves upward in the treatment section. HYDROGEN in molten aluminum and aluminum alloys, which precipitates during cooling and solidification, is the principal cause of pin hole porosity in ingots and castings. Much attention has been given to determining the effect of temperature and pressure on the solubility of hydrogen in pure aluminum, but little data are available on hydrogen solubility in aluminum alloys. This investigation was undertaken to check results reported for pure aluminum and to show the effect of silicon and copper additions on the amount of hydrogen contained by molten alloys. Previous determinations of the solubility of hy-drogen in molten pure aluminum are plotted in fig. 1. The most reliable data appear to be those of Ransley and Neufeldl and of Baukloh and Oester-len.' The latter authors also report some results on the effect of copper and silicon additions. Up to 6 pct these elements decrease the solubility of hydrogen quite rapidly, with a definite minimum noted at 6 wt pct for both copper and for silicon, although no reason is apparent for these minima. Experimental Procedure The solubility of dry hydrogen in pure aluminum, aluminum-silicon, and aluminum-copper alloys was determined by the method of Sieverts.8 This consists of determining the volume of the gas system above the molten metal at a given temperature and pressure by using an insoluble gas. This volume is referred to as the "hot volume." The system is then evacuated and the soluble gas is introduced at the same temperature and until the same pressure is reached. It is necessary to introduce enough of the soluble gas to fill the space above the metal plus the soluble amount. The difference in the volume of soluble gas and the "hot volume" is the solubility. Front Range, Colorado: The majority of the rocks comprising the Front Range of Colorado are pre- Cambrian schists, gneisses, and intrusives which have been elevated to form part of the Southern Rocky Mountain physiographic province. The region is noted mainly for its production of gold and silver, but ores of tungsten, fluorspar, uranium, copper, and iron have been worked. Geological literature describes pitchblende and other radioactive minerals occurring at Jamestown, Boulder County; Central City, Gilpin County; and Lawson, Clear Creek County (fig. 1). These three adjoining counties cover most of the highly mineralized section of the Front Range which extends from James- town to Breckenridge. As far as the writer is aware, uranium has been found only in the portion north-east of Lawson.
