At Balmat in northern New York State, the St. Joseph Lead Co.'s 2100-tpd zinc mining and milling operation is utilizing a unique thickener in conjunction with conventional crushing, grinding and flotation methods. From 1930 through 1962, zinc concentrates went directly from flotation to the filtering, drying and loading facilities, all of which had to operate 24 hr per day. Wide fluctuations in tonnage also had to be accommodated due to variations in the grade of ore. Many problems were thus encountered in filtering and drying, but the cost of installing a conventional, large diameter thickener could never be justified. In 1963, after thorough investigation, an unconventional thickener that is unusual in several respects was installed at Balmat. The tank depth is 16 ft instead of the normal 8 ft. The rakes are raised and lowered by having the main drive gear located on a movable platform. Automatic controls are programmed to raise the drive platform and rakes during one shift of storage. During the next two shifts of withdrawal, the controls are programmed to lower the drive platform and rakes.

NEW trend in geophysics has been uncovered in these depression years, made evident through the thinning cloak of commercial activity, which, in better times, would have completely obscured it. I refer to the increasing use of these methods for geological investigations by federal and state geological surveys. This is a trend that has been gathering momentum not alone in the United States, but abroad as well. Thus, in Poland, the Geological Survey has been playing an increasing role in geophysical work since 1927, and now has- its own geophysical department. The government petroleum producing organization of Argentina has its Geophysical Commission; Brasil boasts a completely equipped geophysical department in its Mineral Production Service; the government of Chile has contracted with commercial companies for geophysical surveys; Peru is planning an intensive program of geophysical prospecting in its petroliferous regions; and Canada has, for several years, cooperated with

IN VIEW of the frequent occurrence of petroleum in other parts of the world, it seems odd that so large an area as is contained within the borders of Brazil should be without this product. This apparent deficiency may be due, however, to our ignorance of the regions in which-it, may exist. In some places, indications point to the probable existence of petroleum in ages gone by; and while the presence of petroleum pools may be problematic, in several regions conditions not unfavorable to their occurrence exist. Yet, Brazil has enormous oil resources in the rich oil-shales in different parts of the country. Many of these shales are very rich and only suitable processes for the extraction of the oil are lacking. At the present time, only a few small experimental plants are producing oil by distillation from these shales. These plants have been the subject of recent investigations by the Geological and Mineralogical Survey, a. pre-liminary report of which is in the hands of the printer. The only regions where studies have not been made are the upper Amazon, the Acre, the Rio Negro, and the Peruvian frontier, which really seems to be the most promising field for, explorations of any in the country. In the vast plateau region of the interior north of the 20th parallel of latitude, granites, gneiss, mica schists, and, very old metamorphosed sedimentaries predominate. Later, sedimentaries occupy a minor position and, where found in the interior, represent a thin veneering resting on the older rocks. At several places near the coast they have a greater development and contain considerable beds of oil-shale and may, in some cases, offer conditions favorable for the occurrence of oil. Such deposits are found in the Permian rocks of central-and southern Maranhão; in the Tertiary and Cretaceous beds along the coast of Alagôas Sergipe, Bahia, and perhaps farther south in Espirito Santo; and in the Parahyba embayment north of Cape Frio and in the interior Tertiary basin of eastern Sao Paulo.

In many areas surrounding the orebodies in mining districts rocks have been bleached and altered by the ore-forming solutions and have been oxidized during later weathering processes. A number of the rock-forming silicates have been broken down to clay, sericitic micas and chlorites have been developed, and pyrite may be found hundreds of feet outside the economic limits of the orebody. These halos of altered ground are prime targets used by geologists in many districts to delineate promising sites for drilling. Both in the field and in the laboratory it is often difficult to map these mineralogical changes in the halos in detail without numerous petrologic examinations. The secondary minerals are generally fine-grained, and since conversion of one mineral to another is often progressive, many alteration processes have not proceeded to completion (feldspars to clay to sericite mica). Qualitative detection of these minerals is difficult; quantitative determination is frequently impossible.

When coal is deposited on the decks of pneumatic tables, all fine particles clinging to the larger pieces are blown free by the air. Inasmuch as the air retains an appreciable residual velocity after passing through the bed of coal, it is capable of suspending particles of goodly size. This velocity is dissipated gradually and, unless confined, can readily extend beyond the limits of the plant. Today the ideal in the design and operation of pneumatic cleaning plants is not that they be no dustier than the ordinary tipple, but rather that they be as clean as an office or shop. This degree of perfection may not yet have been attained in any commercial plant, but it is not impossible of achievement. Not until recently has the recirculation principle been applied to pneumatic separating plants. In the writer's estimation, it has not yet been proved entirely satisfactory in commercial installations. A serious obstacle lies in the fact that it is practically impossible to provide a truly closed circuit. The air circuits must be interrupted at certain points, if only for the introduction of raw material and for the recovery of the finished product. It is feasible to prevent the escape of polluted air at these points, but this can scarcely be accomplished without admitting additional air into the circuit. These additions of air are cumulative, which necessitates means for emitting to the atmosphere the excess while still carrying its objectionable burden, if provisions are not made for conditioning. If it must be provided at all, conditioning is frequently simpler and more economical if applied to the entire volume of air involved. This procedure eliminates the extra initial cost and operating expense of the closed system. Crane Cheek Experiments The first noteworthy commercial installation of pneumatic equipment was made in 1922, at the Crane Creek plant of the American Coal Co. of Allegheny County, at McComas, W. Va. Six tables for cleaning coal between the limits of and 3 in. comprised the initial installation. Dust was collected by hoods connected by a system of ducts to exhauster fans. In this installation the unit dust burden was small, owing to the removal of fines from the feed by vibrating screens.

To THE members of the American Institute of Mining and? Metallurgical Engineers who were fortunate enough to be able to attend the Fiftieth Anniversary at Wilkes-Barre, it was brought home that commercial anthracite requires not only expensive mining but that the milling or preparation of it is also a costly operation, requiring very large capital expenditures and high maintenance and labor costs. The great trouble that coal men meet in discussions of coal problems today is the difficulty the average coal user, especially in the East, finds in distinguishing between anthracite and bituminous coals. They are two entirely separate problems and yet the people who are burning coal complain bitterly of the high cost of anthracite and quote the figures furnished in regard to the prices of bituminous coal and feel that the anthracite operators are making an excessive profit, without realizing the enormous difference in the cost of production in the two fields. The great difference that can be marked is that in this year of industrial depression the prices of anthracite have been not only maintained but have increased during the summer, while the price of bituminous coal has been continually dropping since the first of the year, and yet the same law of supply and demand governs both anthracite and bituminous. In order to understand the situation the two problems must be considered from their separate points of view.

It is not the object of the present paper to give a description of the minerals found on Mine Hill, in Sussex County, N. J., nor even to touch upon all the forms of the ores named, but to place upon record and call to the attention of the Institute some interesting facts concerning them. In May, 1875, after the Dover meeting, some of the members visited this locality, and, no doubt, it is fresh in their memories, being one of the best known mineralogical points in our country. It will be only necessary to describe it very briefly. Mine Hill and Stirling Hill, in Sussex County, N. J.,—the former being at the village of Franklin Furnace, and the latter near Ogdensburg,—are the only localities in the State where zinc ores are found in workable quantities.* Mine Hill is the more northerly, and mineralogically differs from its neighbor, chiefly in having no hydrated ores to speak of, while at Stirling this deposit is considerable. At both points Franklinite, red oxide, and silicate of zinc occur in large quantities. Mine Hill lies on the east side of the Wallkill River, above which it rises to an extreme elevation of about 150 feet. On the summit the outcrop of the Franklinite vein appears, while the lowest worked points are perhaps 10 or 15 feet above the level of the stream. Cornmencing at the northern end, where the Hamburg Road crosses it, this outcrop runs along the northwestern brow of the hill a distance of about 2000 feet, in a general southwest direction, to a point where is a large, cavern-like opening, called the "Southwest Opening." " Double Rock," about the highest point on the hill, lies near the middle of this 2000 feet of outcrop, and over or near it passes a property line, to which allusion will hereafter be made. At the Southwest Opening the vein bends abruptly towards the east,—the angle between the two parts being perhaps 45°,—and this easterly branch continues some 700 feet. In the good old days of the folklore of the mining industry, grizzled prospectors obtained a few loose dollars from friends and neighbours then wandered off to eventually return with the great discovery which became the core of the new corporate empires. Alternatively, merchant banking barons obtained exclusive rights to just about anything of future value over hugh nation-size territories. Some of this probably still goes on, likely with about the same ineffectiveness and waste of effort and money as in the past. CURRENT CONCERNS IN MINING In today's difficult climate in the mining industry, for that matter in all industry, effectiveness is the vital consideration. Cost effectiveness -- more bang for the buck -- is especially important in such an area of high risk as mineral exploration. And there are other factors to consider. Since minerals are depleting resources, the mining inddustry is constantly confronted with the reality that those resources extracted today must be immediately replaced if a resource enterprise is to continue. And if growth is to be achieved, even more resources must be found to support future expansion. The current and immediately foreseeable climate internationally for the mining industry creates a special need and urgency for aggressive and successful exploration, certainly in Canada, if not also in the United States. Depressed world markets and prices have turned yesterday's economic reserves into today's waste, hopefully to be converted into economic ore again in some distant time. One way of replenishing reserves and maintaining a viable mining industry is to find and develop mines which are economic under short-term depressed price and market conditions. This probably means higher grades. A new copper discovery with the right combination of characteristics to be an attractive investment even at today's pices for copper would still merit development into production. Exploration is the only way to find such mines for the difficult short-term conditions. Another important consideration is that normally many years stretch from the first thought of conducting exploration to production -- in those rare instances where an economic discovery is made. If discoveries are not made today, then there will not be any projects to develop when business conditions are more attrative. This industry and the vast number of skilled professionals who are part of mining, are faced with two key problems that underlie the need for a junior exploration segment. One consideration is how to maintain exploration during those years, indeed eras, of recession and depression. We are in such a time now. Throughout the world, major companies have sharply cut back, if not eliminated completely, exploration expenditures other than what is vitally necessary and easily and inexpensively done at the known and producing deposits. And related to that consideration, even more important today than during happier times, is how to finance such necessary ongoing exploration if major companies and governments back away because of financial stringency. CANADIAN SUCCESS In Canada, such problems are being tackled with a success which is capturing worldwide attention. The ability of mineral explorers to obtain willing, eager, high-risk capital is achieving even more outstanding results than in the past. These results are reflected in the widespread continuing exploration ativity in Canada which even spreads into the United States, with some outstanding discovery successes. The most notable exploration success from junior mining activity is the discovery of the Hemlo gold camp in northwestern Ontario, a source of gold which promises to rank with the South

INTRODUCTION Tuff is being considered as a possible geologic median for the underground storage of commercial high level radioactive wastes by the Department of Energy (DOE). DOE has the responsibility for developing or improving the technology fir safely and permanently isolating these wastes. DOE programs must satisfy requirements established by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for the licensing and regulating of these storage facilities (NRC 1981). Pertinent draft NRC requirements are: 1) releases of radioactivity to the environment must be within prescribed limits and 2) emplaced canisters containing wastes must be retrievable up to 50 years following emplacement. High level radioactive wastes produce heat in storage and it is essential that the thermal/mechanical/hydrological response of the host rock will not significantly degrade either the structural performance o£ the repository or the ability of the natural or engineered barriers to retard radionuclide migration. The Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations (NNWSI) was established by DOE to evaluate the suitability of disposing of high level nuclear wastes on or near the Nevada Test Site (NTS) (NNWSI 1980). NNWSI has focused exploration and site evaluation on the tuffs of Yucca Mountain. Field testing is essential to support site characterization and repository design efforts. Preliminary studies have been conducted indicating that tuffs in G-tunnel on the NIS contain welded and nonwelded tuffs that have similar properties to those in Yucca Mountain. Thus, field testing can be accelerated. This paper discusses the issues supporting the planned field experiments in G-tunnel. Issues not related to rock mechanics are not included.

The World War I1 spread to Russia on June 22, 1941, when the German Armies began their invasion. The Soviet industries, which were already engaged in a tremendous armament program, further accelerated the flow of munitions, and equipment and supplies for all purposes not directly military were either entirely eliminated or reduced to an absolute minimum. With the occupation by German armies of the Dniepr and Kharkov industrial regions, this trend was necessarily further accentuated. The oil industry of Russia, in consequence, was left to rely more and more upon itself, its own very limited manufacturing facilities, extensive repair shops and probably much used equipment out of order stacked in the warehouses. All evidence available to date points to the fact that the new situation not only did not affect the production either quantitatively or qualitatively, but, on the contrary, caused a larger flow of much needed fuels to the country's war machine, primarily by renaissance of both management and labor. The oil industry of the Soviet Union, left to depend entirely upon itself for equip ment and supplies, and even for new workers and technicians to replace those called into the services, did and is still doing a good and effective job. Since it could not hope for new equipment and parts and could not blame any other industry for the delays in delivery, it dragged out old machines from storage and repaired them in its own machine shops. Often such stored and used equipment was but slightly defective, waiting for some small part from factories in Central Russia, plants that now were either in German hands or entirely converted to the manufacture of munitions. More particularly, instead of the pipe that could not be taken to the Caucasus from Central Russia, casing reclaimed from abandoned or submarginal wells was used, or pipe from the abandoned or but slightly used pipe lines; and this practice is being continued even now on a large scale, to create an ample reserve for the duration of the conflict. Indirectly such a development was even an improvement on pre-war days, when many wells about to be completed had to wait for weeks, even months, for the arrival of new pipe, all blame then being placed outside of the industry on the factories in Central Russia. For the purpose of reclaiming equipment and pipe still usable, special crews were organized. The war also caused much quicker adaptation of certain American practices and introduction of many emergency measures, such as: removal of derricks upon completion of wells and the use of drilling equipment mounted on skids for rapid transfer from location to location—both of these practices, while standard in the U.S.A., being new in Russia; installation of simplified surface pumping units; substitution of wooden bearings in the surface pump equipment; completion of wells in the Ural-Volga district, where formations are hard and tight throughout the sedimentary column, without either casing or

A detailed description is given of an experimental method for determining relative permeability of porous media to gas. Results are presented for natural and synthetic cores. The experimental data for two and three phase systems are compared. The reproduci-bility of the equilibrium gas saturation ii demonstrated and the effects due to a variation in rate of gas flow are discussed. An attempt is made to correlate total permeability and rock textural factors with relative permeability to gas. Capillary pressure curves obtained simultaneously with the relative permeability curves are shown to be equivalent to those obtained in conventional displacement cells. INTRODUCTION The advances in petroleum reservoir technology during the past decade have made increasingly apparent the desirability of a simple, rapid, reliable metliod for obtaining relative permeability data on small cores. Such data are needed in order to study fluid mechanics in porous media and for the more refined reservoir behavior prediction calculations now under development. It is well that the usual system for supplying water at high pressure purposes of hydraulic mining possesses serious disadvantageense, delay and large annual repairs. THE production of crude oil in Wyoming rose to 44,290,010 bbl. in 1923 and declined, during 1924, to 39,295,030 bbl., a decrease of about 11 per cent. The Salt Creek field supplies 75 to 80 per cent. of the production. Pipeline runs from the Salt Creek field reached a maximum in November, 1923, at a daily average for the month of 116,437 barrels. During 1924, the gas pressure in Salt Creek has declined rapidly and the production dropped to about 60,000 bbl. per day. Part of 'the decline during the last few months was due to lack of power to pump the wells. The electric-power plant of the Midwest Refining Co. did not begin to deliver current until the middle of December, by which time several hundred wells were off production. The cold snap in December, which brought, the temperature down to 30° below zero on the 17th, tied up operations almost completely and the average production for the month was only 49,545 barrels. As more wells are being pumped and the number of dead wells reduced, the production is rising and was up to 61,000 bbl. during the last week of January. A further increase is expected as the weather becomes warmer. The production of Salt Creek, by months, during 1924 is given in Table 1. THE safety lamp is the most common and convenient apparatus for detecting inflammable gases in mines, the presence of gas being shown by a blue flame, called the cap, if the wick has been lowered to suppress the luminous flame. The height of the cap increases with the proportion of gas and with the temperature of the lamp flame. Lamps of the Wolf type, the fuel of which is benzine, have a hotter flame than lamps in which vegetable oils are used, such as the Davy, and the Clanny, and are more sensitive than the latter and their many modifications. The Piehler alcohol lamp gives a still higher cap while the Clowes hydrogen lamp is most sensitive of all. While the effect of the temperature of the source of ignition is well known, the writer knows of no previous attempt to correlate the change of this temperature with change of the height of the cap produced. In order to determine the height of the cap at various temperatures, it was necessary to have a source of ignition the temperature of which could he accurately controlled over a considerable range. This condition was met by a coil of wire of high fusing point heated by an electric current controlled by a variable resistance. The use of a coil offered the further advantage of freedom from complications due to the flame of a burning fuel. Such a flame, being itself of variable height, would to some extent raise or lower the elevation of the base of the cap and therefore add to the difficulty of determining the height of the cap. Besides this, the presence of a small cap from the lamp fuel, commonly known as the "fuel cap, " would interfere with the observation of small gas caps. After some experiment, a coil was made of platinum wire, No. 26, diameter 0.016 in. The coil was 17/64 in. (6.746 mm.) in outside diameter and had eight full turns in a length of ½ in. (12.69 mm.). In the theoretical study of metallurgical reactions, it is necessary to make certain assumptions concerning the nature of metal-gas systems. The assumption usually made is that the reaction in such systems takes place predominantly with gas that is in "solution" and that the amount of solution follows the rules which have been developed for aqueous solutions; namely, Henry's law. The purpose of this paper is to inquire whether these assumptions are the best ones that present knowledge of gas-metal systems permits us to make. In the first part the extent to which a gas will dissolve in a metal and still follow Henry's law is considered. The conclusion is believed justified that the number of molecules of gas that can dissolve in a metal and have the system follow Henry's law must be small indeed. It is therefore improbable that the first assumption concerning the predominance of these dissolved molecules in reaction is correct. It is suggested that some improvement in the correlation of the probabilities with the assumptions made in the mass law equations would be made by the use of the dp law of Sieverts in place of Henry's law. However, the amount of gas that may be held in a metal so that it follows either Henry's or Sieverts' law is considerably outweighed in most metallurgical reactions by that held in gas-metal systems of entirely different structures and concerning which little experimental evidence is available. Some speculation concerning the nature of these is offered. The conclusion is that attention should be given to the determining of the nature of gas-metal systems and that the really fruitful application of the mass law and its connected calculations will have to await a more complete knowledge of these systems than we now possess.
