Pressure oxidation of gold containing concentrates and ores is an effective pretreatment for liberating refractory gold. This is particularly true when an appreciable portion of the gold is associated with sulfides and is not amenable to conventional cyanidation. A brief review of the literature on pressure oxidation of refractory gold materials is presented. The chemistry of the aqueous oxidation of arsenopyrite and pyrite is discussed. Data obtained on pressure oxidation and subsequent cyanidation of concentrates and ores tested at the Sherritt Research Centre are also presented.

This paper will discuss a US Bureau of Mines project designed to assess and predict the impacts which surface coal mining will have on the regional shallow groundwater system in the Powder River Basin. The primary objective will be met through the accomplishment of the following: (1) The design and establishment of a regional network for monitoring shallow groundwater systems in the basin; (2) monitoring the direction and rate of flow, water quality, and aquifer characteristics of the shallow groundwater systems; and (3) development of a regional groundwater simulation model, with appurtenant subroutines to determine local effects.

ANALYTICAL calculations have been carried out on the effect of casing perforations on the productivity of wells, and formulas have been derived for general types of perforation patterns. The numerical calculations, however, show that the resultant well productivity is essentially independent of the perforation pattern, but is determined mainly by the total perforation density. Thus, for example, for a density of three perforations per foot of casing, the well productivity will be cut to one third of that of the uncased well for a perforation radius of 1/3 in., and to approximately one half for a perforation radius of 1/4 in,, regardless of the detailed manner in which the perforations are distributed over the casing surface. The analytical theory is also extended to include wells completed with slotted liners. It is shown that the reduction in productivity due to such liners will be relatively small as compared with that due to perforated casings.

My predecessor in the office of President of the Institute started a custom of visiting the various local sections, thus obtaining their points . of view and their ideas as to how the Institute can best serve the interests of its members. Exceedingly valuable- exchange of ideas was thus brought about. I am following this custom as far as the limited amount of free time at my disposal will allow me, and I trust that my successor in office will appreciate the benefit to be derived from following the custom thus initiated and will continue the swing around the circle of the local sections. The activities of the Institute are increased by the prestige gained from large numbers and I trust that every member of this local section will consider himself a member of the committee on increase of membership and will see if he is not able during the coming year to gain at least one new member for the Institute. This is a perfectly possible proposition for, although the membership of the Institute is at present approximately seven thousand, I feel sure there are at least seven thousand more men in the United States who are interested in mining, metallurgy or geology from the metal-mining point of view who would make admirable members or associate members of the Institute. The first consideration of the Institute as a body, and of each member as an individual, is to win the war and defeat the Huns. In order to accomplish this, the Institute, as a body, has cooperated with the other national engineering societies and the great bureaus of the Department of the Interior, the United States Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines in forming committees to study and advise the Government on pressing problems of vital importance.

Combination of gravity data and density logs makes it possible to determine the structural relief. Under a wide class of geologic conditions, the solution is unique, or limited to a single parametric system of solutions. As a useful byproduct, the method yields a new way to construct derivative maps, continue the field up or down, subtract regional anomalies, and perform smoothing. In the past, the problem of interpreting gravity anomalies in terms of structural geology was solved along two main lines: 1) A body of a certain shape and density contrast was assumed and the corresponding gravity anomaly calculated, analytically for simple bodies, graphically and/or numerically for more complex ones; then the computed anomaly was compared with the observed one, and the assumed shape corrected according to the differences between the two. 2) The anomaly is assumed to come from a warped interface between two media of different density; the relief of the warping is assumed small compared to the depth of burial, so that the structure can be approximated by a flat horizontal surface of variable density distribution. The first method is a standard technique, described in every text book on applied geophysics, and is well applicable, for bodies with predominant vertical dimension. The second one, probably first used by Tsuboi and Fuchida,' is mathematically more elegant. It applies to the fashionable field of integral transforms (Bullard and Cooper, 2 Tomoda and Aki, 3 Dean 4) and is useful mainly in cases when the vertical relief of the structures is comparatively small. 30th methods, tacitly or openly, assume a density discontinuity across the boundary of the two media, while within each medium the density is constant. H EAVY-MEDIA separation continues to be the favored process for concentrating the coarser fractions by elimination of undesirable tailing and middling fractions. The first vessel used for heavy-media separation was the closed-top cone. Further developments then led to the Akins spiral separator which fulfilled the requirements for improving metallurgica1 separation as well as gaining mechanical advantages. During the last season there has been a substantial influx of separator designs for further improvements of metallurgical separation based on the heavy- media method as well as attempting to garner further mechanical advantages with reduction in power consumption to boot. The newest of these designs was the Hardinge counter-current separator which was introduced into the field last spring in two plants. The pre-production interval, beginning with the recognition of an orebody's best potential and ending with significant production, contains time-dependent conditions well appreciated by miners but not always understood or appreciated by the landowners, investors, and legislators with whom a miner must deal. The expression persists, even outside of Western fiction, that someone has "found a mine." From a slightly more knowledgeable position, the question is asked "How long does it take to make a mine?" and an all-encompassing answer is expected. By scanning the discovery and development history of hundreds of mines and rejecting those which involve rehabilitation or expansion of older mines, some generalizations can be attempted. It should be kept in mind that while physical conditions involving the geology of the orebody and the geographic surroundings do not change markedly with time, technologic and economic conditions do change from year to year. The new methods, facilities, markets, land tenure, and politics form a pattern in which today's mines are made and which do sometimes modify the pre-production interval.

Scientists and engineers must concern themselves not only with technical problems, but with the socio-economic difficulties of our scciety. The author states that raw materials are basic to the economic process and that mineral raw materials occur naturally in nearly limitless quantities. He feels that the economic pocess will provide sufficient raw materials for man's needs, and discusses in some detail the world economic environment. As our society grows in complexity, it becomes more urgently incumbent upon scientists and engineers to bring their experiences to bear on the solution, not only of technical problems, but also on socio-economic difficulties. It is to this field that I have directed a large part of my energies. RAW MATERIALS BASIC TO THE ECONOMIC PROCESS There are certain premises, frequently overlooked, which bear emphasis. As economics concerns the production, distribution, and consumption of goods, so our whole society is based on raw materials. Without the basic extractive industries of agriculture and mining, there would be no economic problems with which to deal. This principle has been expressed as "All productivity is based on three factors: 1) natural resources, whose form, place, and condition are changed by the expenditure of 2) human energy (both muscular and mental), with the aid of 3) tools.77* It seems strange that such an obvious statement needs to be made. It is forgotten by all of us, however, at one time or another when we get involved in the complicated theories of economics dealing with the financial and fiscal policies of the various governments, in the financing of enterprises, in marketing, and in labor relations. Unless decisions in all of these fields are made with this, and the rest of the "Ten Pillars of Economic Wisdom," consciously in mind, the resultant policies are doomed to eventual failure, whether these are policies of individuals, companies, or governments. The economic process is basic to society. But economics and the social aspects of humanity are inevitably intertwined. If human needs are not provided for within the basic economic structure, conflicts arise to disrupt the most carefully laid social plans. Similarly, it is the failure of society to cope with basic economic prerequisites that leads to discord within the body politic and thus to eventual economic disaster. We who are engaged in the various aspects of the mineral industry, therefore, have a large part to play in society's future development. MINERAL RAW MATERIALS OCCUR NATURALLY IN NEARLY LIMITLESS QUANTITIES Throughout my career in and out of government, I have formed my decisions on two principles: 1) Fundamentally, all mineral raw materials exist within the earth's crust in quantities greatly exceeding man's needs; 2) Any problems of supply of these materials are primarily economic in nature. With respect to my first assumption, analyses by geochemists enable them to estimate the quantities in which each of the known elements exist in the earth's crust. One of the most cautious and famous suggests that the average copper content of the lithosphere to a depth of ten miles is about 55 ppm. If this is valid, then the lithosphere contains about 1.4 quadrillion (1.4 x 10 ") tons of copper metal — an unimaginable quantity. This is 8,500,000-fold that which has been consumed by man in his existence. To illustrate further, consider that the deepest copper mine in history went to about 9000 ft below the surface; the present copper mines of the world now average less than 1500 ft in depth. We can assume that in most continental land areas of the world it is technically feasible to mine to a depth of at least one mile. The land areas of the world to an average depth of one mile, then, contain 343 billion tons (343 x 10') of copper metal, or 2000 times that which has been extracted to date. Hydraulic tailing fill in the Butte deep-level mines resulted from studies made in 1958 by The Anaconda Co. Mining Research Department. At the time of the study, dry mine tailing was hauled via rail cars from the Anaconda tailing ponds, 25 miles distant, to the tailing fill plants of the underground mines at the Leonard, Anselmo and Mt. Con mines. Presently, tailing from the Weed concentrator in Butte is delivered to the Kelley shaft via pipeline and stope filling has become automated. Tailing at 30% solids is pumped 8000 ft horizontally and upward from the concentrator to the Kelley fill plant, where it is dewatered and deslimed by three Krebs cyclones. These discharge the material into the cased and grouted mine delivery boreholes at desired densities of up to 70% solids. The vertical boreholes and 4-in. rubber-lined Victaulic pipe carry the material downward to horizontal distribution lines, which in turn tap into the 3-in. stope-filling, unlined Victaulic pipelines.

ALL the ores of any kind whatsoever, even though they be semiminerals and may be perfect in their qualities, have to be recognized by experienced and good sorters. These men must have a detailed as well as a general experience of the metals so that in this first preparation, which is most important, they may know how to distinguish the good from the bad, and to know what is rock and what is ore. They must use patience in this, breaking and cutting and king the ore from the earth. They must separate the good ore from the bad, avoiding as far as possible every occasion for poisoning it by traces of other ores, evil stones, or other things inimical to its nature. Finally, with the judgment of the eye and with tools, and, in the end, by roasting it with fire and then quenching it with water, or by washing and re-washing it, the ore must be made as pure as possible in order to join it better with the companions that seem to be the most beneficial for its needs. Ores would be useless stones without smelting. Therefore, when it is certain that such ores are of divers elemental mixtures, aid must be given to each one according to the evil ingredients [47v] that harm it. But because such evil qualities are things that are often not apparent to the eye, such as too great a burning, or too much earthiness so that when they are alone the fire burns these ores before it melts them, it is necessary to temper them with other materials. INTRODUCTION The characteristics of feed and product of any size reduction operation are normally expressed as mean size, the size corresponding to 80 percent undersize or the percentage below a specified size or specific surface area. But the feed has a distribution of sizes and quite often it becomes essential to obtain a product of desired distribution. In such cases, size distribution of feed is related to product by matrix methods. The technique of matrix representation of crushing operation was proposed by Broadbent and Calcott (1 to 4). They divided the complete crushing mechanism of coal into breakage, selection and classifying functions for a closed-circuit system to establish relations between the feed and product distribution. Ellis, Ray and Venables (6) suggested an empirical method of determining the breakage matrix by combining the characteristic functions and proposed the following hypotheses: 1. The breakage of individual size fractions passing through the mill at a given rate is the same whether passed separately or as part of a mixed feed. 2. The breakage of a mixed feed may be estimated from the products of individual size fractions passed through the mill separately at a rate at which they would be crushed as part of the mixed feed. This method is stated to be applicable when there is no interaction between the individual sizes.

The dissolution of nickel, copper, and cobalt from five different samples of well-characterized deep sea manganese nodules was measured as a function of temperature, pH, leaching time, and particle size. Nickel, copper, and cobalt extraction each respond to these variables in a different manner. The results of this investigation indicate that copper and nickel can be selectively dissolved from iron and manganese at moderately low pH, provided the reaction is given sufficient time. A high dissolution of cobalt with dilute sulfuric acid can only be achieved from nodules that have a low iron content (<5%). The most probable rate-controlling step for copper and cobalt dissolution is diffusion through the pores of the nodules, and for nickel dissolution chemical reaction appears to be rate-controlling.

Discovery is the first step in the location of the claim. The provision of the Revised Statutes (2320) is, " No location of a mining claim shall be made until the discovery of the vein or lode within the limits of the claim located." Strictly speaking, discovery may be defined as the finding of ore or metalliferous rock in place in a well-defined vein. This definition was too strict, so discovery extended later to cover such indications of the pregence of ore, within rock in place, as would justify an experienced miner in spending his time and money with a reasonable expectation of finding ore in paying quantities. According to Colorado statutes a discovery must show a well-defined crevice; in Arizona, a lode, deposit, or mineral in place; in Montana, a well-defined crevice or valuable depositi; in Nevada, a lode or deposit of mineral in place. It is wrong to require a discovery. An honest prospector, wishing to obey the law, finds himself compelled, in most cases, to evade this point. In Clear Creek district, Colorado, a quartz seam will constitute a discovery; in Butte, a red capping; in Leadville or Ely, it is any place where a man can find a piece of vacant ground big enough upon which to sink a . 10-ft. hole. If the vein or deposit outcrops a man can show a discovery, but if it does not outcrop it is foolish to compel him to show one; and this point has been gently side-stepped. Any hole 10 ft. deep now constitutes a discovery. It is no use having laws that the people cannot consistently ob_ey. No sane man will dig unless he expects to find mineral, and he should be protected while digging. He should be required to show that he has mineral ground only when he comes to patent.

FOR the purpose of the following discussion the word "research" is interpreted as including all phases of development work on methods of manufacture, metallurgical characteristics, and uses of iron and steel. Research in the iron and steel industry then includes both plant re- search and laboratory research. Since iron and steel came into being, the steel consumer&apos;s plant and the steel producer&apos;s plant have been important factors in the development of the steel industry. Good minds have always been associated with both consumer and producer plants, so marked progress was made in the industry even when these were the only types of research and development groups in action.

Growth of general interest in uranium during the last ten years has been unparalleled in mining history, outranking the popular gold rushes and mining booms of bygone years. This is not surprising, considering the spectacular advances in nuclear research and the fact that a small amount of uranium can provide great quantities of energy for peaceful purposes. There are, however, a number of misconceptions and exaggerations regarding uranium. Many novices have highly exaggerated ideas of the ease of finding workable deposits, as opposed to mere occurrences, and reports of insignificant discoveries are sometimes given much publicity. Beginning about ten years ago mining for uranium has assumed a major place in Canadian and U. S. mineral industries. Uranium is now high on the list of metals produced in Canada. The gross value of uranium production in Canada in 1958, when additional plants now under construction are operating, will probably exceed 180 million dollars.

A novel two-stage froth flotation process for the recovery of pure magnesite from low grade ores is described. The process consists of a first-stage, magnesite flotation step where a rougher magnesite concentrate is floated with amine collectors. The first-stage froth concentrate is then repulped in fresh water, and quartenary ammonium salt and fuel oil are added to float the remaining impurities. The results from laboratory batch tests show that a high-grade magnesite concentrate assaying 0.99-0.20% Si02 and 2.84-0.46%a Ca0 can be produced. Regulation of the variables controlling magnesite froth flotation also allows the variation of the ratio % Ca0: % SiO2, between the acceptable limits 0.32 to 5.79. This ratio is important to the quality of dead-burned magnesite.

With capacity of 51,000 tpd, the Morenci concentrator produces approximately 49,000 tons of tailing for final deposition. Disposal involves distrlbutlon of thickened tailing to dams in such a manner that solids can be used for dam construction and water can be impounded for reclamation. During early operation, although tonnage treated was lower, it was necessary to use orthodox disposal practices in the areas available for tailing. Trestles mounted on a series of dams, constructed of borrow material, carried the pipelines from which tailing were spigoted behind the dams. When adequate disposal areas were finally established, it became desirable to look for more efficient methods. The idea of placing the distribution pipe or manifold directly on the crest of the dam was advanced in 1945. After a period of testing, that procedure in modified form replaced the older trestle arrangement. Marked economies resulted, and time required to prepare dams for succeeding storage cycles was greatly reduced.
