The negative "plastic Poisson's ratio" suggested in earlier studies of Mus deformation is analyzed, and the results are verified experimentally with NaCl crystals. In the early stages of deformation where the primary {110}(110) slip predominates, compression along. the [001] direction produces contraction along the lateral [011] direction plus a compensating expansion along. the [100] direction. With additional strain, the primary slip is supplemented by secondary {111}(110) slip so that the above contraction diminishes and a more typical deformation appears. THE shape change of bee and fee crystals deformed by compression or tension along [011] has been analyzed in some detail and shown to be responsible for the development of peculiar microstructures in [011] fiber textured polycrystals of these metals.1'3 This paper concerns the unusual shape change accompanying [011] compression of NaCl crystals. It is the direct outgrowth of an earlier investigation of the deformation of manganese sulfide inclusions in steel.3,4 In that investigation, cylindrical specimens of steel containing small oriented crystals of MnS were prepared by powder metallurgy and plastically compressed. The flow of the inclusions was determined relative to that of the steel by sectioning the composite and measuring the length-to-width ratio L/W of the inclusion and diameter-to-height D/H ratio of the steel cylinder on the plane of section. These L/W ratios, normalized by dividing by the initial LO/WO ratio of the inclusion, were compared with the normalized D/H ratio of the steel cylinder. Of particular interest here are the deformation characteristics of an inclusion oriented with [Oil] parallel to the compression axis. When measurements were made on sections parallel to the (100) plane of the inclusion, the L/IV ratios were only slightly in excess of unity, indicating a high apparent hardness of the [011] criented inclusion. However, measurements on a (011) plane of section resulted in L/W ratios which were much larger, Fig. 1. These observations prompted an analysis of the strains resulting from slip in an MnS crystal compressed along [011.]. CRYSTALLOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS Manganese sulfide has the NaCl crystal structure, and the predominant slip system is {110}(110). A secondary system, {111}(110), has also been reported.= {110}(110) Slip. When a crystal is subject to a uni-axial compressive stress 011 along [011], four slip systems, (101)[101.], (101)[101.], (110)[i10], and (110) [ 110], will be equally stressed with a shear stress t = 0.2 011 while the other two {110}( 110) systems will be unstressed. The normal strain En along any reference axis n resulting from slip is given by Schmid's law: en = S COS ?in COS in ?i 111 where ?in and +in are the angles between n and the i slip direction and n and the i slip plane normal, respectively, and where ?i is the shear strain on the i slip system, For the four active slip systems above, the cos ?in cos +in terms are all equal when the reference axes are the [011] compressive axis, [011] and [ 100]. Eq. [I.] therefore reduces to en - cos ?n cos +ny [2] where y =S?i for all slip systems. Substituting the appropriate angles, Eon = 0.25? 110 eon - 0.25y110 [3] €100 = -0.50y 110 The interesting feature of Eqs. [3] is that they predict that the strains in the [011] and [011] directions, resulting from {110}(110) slip, are equal and of the same sign. The object of this paper is to describe and discuss the progress that has been made, up to the present date, in the development of the modern by-product coke-oven. There are few members of the Institute who have not heard more or less of the by-product oven-installation, and there are many whose acquaintance with it is intimate and practical. Since the general opinion on the subject has hardly become crystallized as yet, it is hoped that this paper will at least furnish matter for discussion. The chlorination of ilmenite concentrates and slags to produce Tic14 suitable for pigment or metal production was investigated by the Bureau of Mines along with the dechlorination of byproduct iron chloride to produce chlorine for recycle and iron oxide., Ilmenite concentrates or slag powders were fed into the bottom of a fluidized coke bed at 1,050º C using chlorine flow rates up to 20 l/min in a 10.2-cm-dim reactor. Tests showed that >95 percent of the various ilmenite concentrates reacted at optimum conditions, and recovery of TiC14 ranged from 95 to 100 percent of stoichiometric. Impurity dusts were removed from the vapors by cyclones and a fiberglass cloth filter. Iron chloride was condensed as a powder with less than 0.4 percent insoluble material. The TiC14 was collected in refrigerated condensers. Iron chloride was dechlorinated at 500º to 550º C by reaction with oxygen in a 16.5-cm-dim reactor using a fluidized bed of Fe2O3. Optimum processing was attained with a FeC13 feed containing 25 wt-pct Fe203 granules treated with 2 wt-pct NaCl catalyst; Under the above conditions, off gas chlorine concentrations of 62 to 90 wt-pct were obtained. During 2- and 3-day tests with technical-grade FeC13, conversion of FeC13 was 94 to 97 percent, chlorine concentrations were 76 to 90 wt-pct, and up to 92 pct of the stoichio- metric Fe203 was removed in the primary reactor discharge. Grain boundary attack in 16 pct HCl was found to be substantially the same at low penetrations in zone-refined aluminum (individual impurities 0.1 at. ppm), superior electrolytically refined aluminum (51 at. ppm), and aluminum with various impurities at much higher levels. It was concluded that impurity atom segregation affecting corrosion would have been detected and that the corrosion susceptibility did not originate in this segregation but in the structure of the boundary. It was pointed out that the significance of most previous studies in this system had been obscured by an unrecognized autocatalytic copper reaction. Although general corrosion rate was also impurity-insensitive , there was shallow pitting attributed to iron seg-regation and a hillocked surface texture associated with copper; these were interpreted as due to cathodic damage affecting- cathode distribution. THE grain boundary corrosion suffered by high-purity aluminum in hydrochloric acid has been the object of some interest (the earlier work is summarized in Ref. 1). The central metallurgical question here is whether the corrosion susceptibility of a boundary originates in its structure or in impurity atom segregation. An attempt to study this question revealed large catalytic effects associated with small quantities of the copper impurity in the aluminum, 220 ppm, or in the corrodent, and these magnified the preferential boundary attack and obscured the intrinsic susceptibility question.' After the catalytic effects had been examined,"' test conditions could be designed to avoid them and methods developed for studying the shallow boundary penetrations prevailing when they were absent.= It then became possible to determine whether intrinsic boundary corrosion in aluminum involves impurity segregation. The older work provided no firm information on grain boundary segregation of specific solutes influencing corrosion although several studies suggested iron segregates.4,5 perryman4 found in 10 pct HC1 that the slowly developing (microns per month) grain boundary grooves were deeper in material of higher iron content (range 10 to 550 ppm, with 5 to 80 pprn Cu) but he did not measure the depths of general corrosion, which were probably several times greater, and his reference surfaces may have varied more than did the groove depths. Metzger and Intrater's results for 20 pct HC~,' which yielded higher time-average rates (mm per month) and deeper penetrations, suggested that boundary segregation of iron (range 4 to 230 ppm, with 22 pprn Cu) decreased the penetration rate. IMD effect of the copper impurity is greater1,2 and it is now evident that their corrosion rates had been much magnified by this effect and did not provide a proper basis for the analysis of segregation. In exploratory studies of other solutes (made under the same conditions), 1000 ppm additions of Mg, Mn, or Si or 100 ppm Ca were without effect.1 Montariol6 noted that boundary attack in 22 pct HC1 persisted after zone refining although with fewer deep fissures (ranges 0.06 to 4 ppm Cu, 4 to 23 ppm Fe). Autocatalytic effects may have influenced these results also and those of Perryman.4 The present objective was, as a first step, to see whether quantitative tests designed to exclude autocatalytic influences would indicate the existence of low-level impurity effects on intrinsic boundary corrosion. Comparison of electrolytically refined with zone-refined aluminum of lower copper and iron contents revealed no differences in boundary corrosion, but certain impurity-sensitive differences in general corrosion morphology were noted and investigated further at higher impurity levels. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A) Material. A selection from commercially available material was made with the cooperation of several producers. An electrolytically refined lot (III-A, 1 ppm Cu, 2.4 ppm Fe) studied previously3 provided a starting point. Since material of substantially higher copper content could not be used if the autocatalytic corrosion reaction were to be avoided,2,3 a lot (III-B) of about the same purity was added as a check, two zone-refined lots (I-A and I-B) with copper and iron an order of magnitude lower were selected for comparison, and an intermediate lot (11) was included. Analytical data are given in Table I. For copper in I-B and iron in I-A and I-B, the actual concentration is thought to be near the limit given, i.e., about 0.1 ppm. For titanium, vanadium, and chromium in III-B, the actual amounts are thought to be, like those in III-A, substantially lower than in the zone-refined lots (these elements concentrate in the solid on freezing). Data are given later for some additional lots surveved. B) Specimen Preparation and Procedure. one by 3 cm blanks with a notched stem were cut from 1-mm cold-rolled sheet, annealed 24 hr in air at 650°C, and quenched in an air stream (42°C per sec initial cooling rate, 100 sec to cool to 100°C). The high annealing temperature maximized diffusivities and approach to equilibrium impurity distributions. A water quench, in principle more efficient in preserving the distribution established, was undesirable because the boundaries were almost plane and they tended to shear and migrate during the quench and thus to be separated from any existing impurity atmosphere. Stress-strain curves were obtained for single crystals of 70 pct Ag-30 pct Zn tested in tension and shear. Samples tested in tension and shear had comparable resolved shear stresses and stress-strain curves. The {111} <110> slip system was observed. It zoas found that the9.e is a barrier to slip in both latent close -packed directions and that the magnitude of these barriers is proportional to prior strain during easy glide. It was observed that cross-slip in tension and shear was most frequent in crystals with an initial orientation near <100> "Oershoot" zoas observed in tension. The amount of this "overshoot" was independent of initial orientation. AN idealized concept of plastic deformation indicates that a single crystal should yield at some stress that is dependent on crystal perfection and it should then continue to deform plastically by the process of easy glide which is characterized by a linear stress-strain curve and a low coefficient, d/dy, of work hardening. Hexagonal metal crystals generally conform to this ideal concept of laminar flow. In fcc metals the range of easy glide is always restricted in magnitude and it is strongly dependent on orientation, composition, crystal size, shape, surface preparation, and temperature. Since one of the principal differences between the two crystal systems, both of which deform by slip on close packed planes, is the existence of latent slip planes in the fcc crystals, it has been proposed that the transition from easy glide to turbulent flow, characterized by rapid linear hardening, is due to slip on secondary planes intersecting the primary plane.ls Several theories have been proposed to explain the linear hardening and parabolic stages of the stress -strain curve.6"10 The easy-glide region is the least understood of the three stages. The stress-strain characteristics of Cu-Zn, which shows a long easy-glide region, have been extensively investigated."-" In light of recent ideas on dislocations, cross-slip, effect of solute atoms, and stacking fault energy, it was felt that the certain features of this earlier work might be compared with another alloy, Ag-30 pct Zn, which also exhibits a long easy-glide region. Tension and shear stress at room temperatures were employed. The results obtained, together with some interpretation of the observations, are described below. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The silver and zinc used for mixing the alloys were 99.99 pct pure. The two components were weighed to within 0.1 pct of the weights required fo the alloy composition. They were then placed in a closed graphite mold and the mold and contents were heated in 100°C stages from 500&apos; to 900°C with sufficient time and vigorous agitation at each stage provided to dissolve the silver. The crucible was then heated to 1150°C and agitated violently before being quenched in oil. The resulting alloy rod was machined free of sur face defects and then placed in a graphite mold designed for growing single crystals. The graphite mold was closed with a graphite plug and was encased in a pyrex glass tube which was connected to a vacuum system. The tube and mold assembly were placed in a furnace; the tube was evacuated and the furnace was rapidly heated to a temperature sufficient for fusing and sealing the glass. The glass-encased evacuated mold and contents were then lowered through a vertical furnace. The top section of the furnace was held at 100 °C above the melting point of the alloy. The lowering rate was 1.5 in. per hr. The tension specimens were 1/4 in. diam; the shear specimens were 1/2 in. diam. These specimens were then removed from the mold, etched, and chemically polished with hot (60°C) Chase etch reagent (Crz03-4.0 g, NH4C1-7.5 g, NHOs-150 cc, HzS04-52 cc, and Hz0 to make 1 liter). In preparation for tensile testing, the specimens were carefully machined to a diameter of about 0.200 in. to permit a gage length of 6 in., annealed for 16 hr at 800&apos; to reduce coring, and then cleaned and polished. A modified Bausch-type shear apparatus which has been described previously18 were employed. The gage length was 1/8 in. This shear apparatus was placed in an Instron tensile testing machine. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS A) Tension. Several specimens were extended at room temperature to determine the effect of initial orientation on the stress-strain curves of Ag-30 pct Zn. The initial orientation and the resolved shear stress supported by the active slip system at various total strains are plotted in Fig. 1. The critical resolved shear stress, t,, initial rate of work hardening, d/dy, and length of the easy-glide region are independent of orientation. The fcc to bcc y to a transformation in an Fe-24.5 at. pct Pt alloy was studied and found to be martensitic. Large martensite plates are formed in this alloy which are ideal for crystallographic studies; the Ms temperature is about -5°C. Ordering of the parent phase prior to transformation to martensite causes a pronounced lowering of the Ms temperature. For the first time in the case of alloys of iron, measurements of the habit plune, orientation relationship, and magnitude and direction of the shape stvain have been obtained on preselected martensite plates. It is shown that by measuring the initial and displaced (as a result of the shape strain) positions of three or more non-parallel fiducial scratches on one reference surfice the maguitude and direction of the shape strain and the state of distovtion at the parent-mavtensite interface can be determined with a reasonable degree of accuvacy. The agreement between the phenomenolog-cal crystallographic theory of martensitic transformations and the experimental results habit plune, orientation relationship, and nlagnitude and direction of the shape strain) is essentially perfect, and is thought to be the best reported to date for iron alloys. THE comparatively few investigations on binary Fe-Pt alloys have been concerned with magnetic properties, ordered phases, and the equilibrium diagram itself. Various investigations have shown that the equilibrium diagram is of the open y field type; in addition there is a peritectic transformation, a minimum melting point, and three ordered phases: Fe3Pt, FePt, and FePt3. The results of a number of investigators1-6 have shown that the temperature dependence of the y to a (and reverse) transformation in iron-rich alloys is reasonably well-established. The Fe3Pt phase was first noted by Kussman and Rittberg,7 and its existence was later confirmed by Franklin et al,8 Steijn and Donahoe,9 and Berkowitz et al.10 The FePt phase was reported by Isaac and amman&apos; and later confirmed by a host of others.3,6,7,12,13 Kussman and Rittberg7 noted the existence of the superlattice FePt3. Prior to 1956, the 1 to a transformation in iron-rich Fe-Pt alloys was termed "irreversible". In 1957 Klokholm and Donahoe" termed this transformation martensitic, presumably because of its occurrence at temperatures well below those where diffusion normally takes place. This observation served as a point of departure for the present investigation, and in the very early stages of the work to be discussed it was readily verified that the y to a transformation in iron-rich Fe-Pt alloys is indeed martensitic. Quite large martensite plates exhibiting the well-known surface tilt were observed. These plates are ideal in the sense that the boundaries between the parent and product phases were usually very straight. It thus appeared that Fe-Pt martensites would be ideal for crystallographic studies, and this was the purpose of the present investigation. Details of the crystallography of martensitic transformations (particularly for iron alloys) and the phe-nomenological crystallographic theories15-l7 have been discussed many times and thus will require very little elaboration here. Thermal deco7nposition of Pyrite particles in a fluidized bed with inert gas stream was studied. Assuming that heat transfer from the surroundings to the fluidized particles controls the overall decomposition rate, rate equations for the batch process and for the continuous process were derived. In the batch experiment, a linear rate equation satisfies the experimental results and the overall heat transfer coefficient calculated from the rate constant agrees fairly well with that obtained by Leva.l1 For the continuous process, two rate equations were derived, one on the assumption of complete mixing of particles and another on the upward piston flow of particles in a fluidized bed. The former holds for a bed containing a higher fraction of decomposed pyrite realized at lower feeding rates. The latter can be applied for a bed at higher feeding rates. Thus, segregation of particles in the fluidized bed was indicated at higher feeding rates. Bed temperatures also correspond to these conditions. ThERMAL decomposition of pyrite may be represented by Eq. [I]. The pressure of diatomic sulfur gas reaches 1 atm at about 690°C. The thermodynamics,&apos; kinetics,2&apos;3 composition, and properties3-5 of decomposed products of such a reaction have been studied. Pyrite is a very common sul-fide mineral and is often accompanied with other sul-fides. It is of basic interest in nonferrous metallurgy to clarify the behavior of pyrite in the pyrometallur-gical processes of sulfide minerals of metals such as copper, lead, zinc, nickel, and so forth. Interest in this reaction increased recently because of possible elimination of arsenic from pyrite in processing highly purified iron oxide pellets. Producing elemental sulfur from pyrite, instead of sulfuric acid, also aroused interest in this reaction. It is indicated that the thermal decomposition of solid particles, such as calcium carbonate, proceeds through three major sequential steps: heat transfer, interfacial chemical reaction, and mass transfer.637 It is known that the decomposed product of pyrite is very porous2, 3 and the diatomic sulfur gas evolved can easily escape through this layer of decomposed product. It depends upon the circumstances, therefore, whether the heat transfer to the interface within particles or the chemical reaction at the interface determines the overall decomposition rate. The enthalpy change in the decomposition of pyrite is about 33 kcal per mole FeS2 which is comparable to that of calcium carbonate. The decomposition of calcium car- bonate becomes more and more dependent on the rate of transport of heat when reaction temperature increases, such as occurs in a fluidized bed.6&apos;7 It is reasonable to presume, therefore, that the thermal decomposition of pyrite, an endothermic process, carried out in a fluidized bed may be analyzed according to the heat transfer controlling model. This work intends, first, to propose a mathematical model that determines the overall rate in a fluidized bed for the decomposition process and, second, to investigate a few characteristics of the fluidized bed based upon the experimental results obtained. KINETICS OF THERMAL DECOMPOSITION IN A FLUIDIZED BED It is intended in this section to obtain rate equations for thermal decomposition of pyrite in a fluidized bed by assuming that the overall rate is determined by heat transfer from the surroundings to the particles. Both batch and continuous processes are considered. 1) Batch Process. To obtain the rate equation in the batch process, the following two additional assumptions are made. First, the temperature of preheated inert gas, tg, blown into the fluidized bed is assumed to be the same as the temperature of the fluidized bed, tf. Thus, no heat exchange occurs between the gas and particles in the bed and only the heat transfer from the reactor wall kept at tw to the particles is to be considered. Second, the decomposition is assumed to start at the outer surface of the particles and to proceed toward the center. At any given time during decomposition, undecomposed pyrite remains in the tori at a temperature: td. The decomposed shell is composed of FeS1+x whose outer surface is at tp Diatomic sulfur gas evolving at the interface is heated to tf during its escape through the decomposed shell. IN the closing months of 1936 the copper industry gave every evidence that it was at last on the threshold of an improved era. At the beginning of the year prices stood at 9 ¼ ¢, which in itself was a great improvement over prices prevailing for the three previous years. Industry generally was showing signs of moving forward in this country, and business was definitely good in certain foreign quarters. The threat of war and preparations for rearmament in Europe and Asia acted as a further stimulus to purchasing. By midsummer the situation had so improved and stocks had been so reduced that the cartel of foreign producers (including American producers with foreign mines) decided to increase the production quota to 75 per cent on Aug. 1. Large-scale buying gave continued strength to the price and by Oct. 1 the quota was increased to 80 per cent, and again on Oct. 15, to 85 per cent. Notwithstanding this the price of copper continued its advance and on Nov. 1, with stocks declining continuously, the cartel increased operations to 95 per cent, then to 105 per cent on Nov. 5. In the meantime the domestic producers, because of the great increase in home consumption, had increased their production by nearly one-half. At the close of the year copper sold at 12¢ per pound, and since the turn of the present year has reached 17¢. This rapid increase has not been wholly justified. Much of the increase was due to the legitimate demands of recovering industry, but rearmament orders plus accumulation of reserve stocks in case of war, purchases in anticipation of labor strikes and purely speculative activities on the London Metal Exchange accounted for the balance. Certainly in view of the state of industry and the general world price level, it appears unnecessarily high. Talk of a copper shortage is sheer nonsense, the recent condition in the market being created by overbuying, leaving but a small volume for speculative supplies. It takes some months for an increase in mine output to reach the market, but production is again overtaking apparent consumption, stocks have begun to increase, and this, together with the reopening of many small

The work reported in this paper was carried out to supplement the existing information concerning directional properties and recrystallization textures of annealed brass sheet and strip. These characteristics are of direct interest when the forming and drawing properties of such material are being considered. Among those who have made contributions in this field are Bass and G1ocker;l Bauer, Göler and Sachs;2 Phillips and Samans;3 Pratt;4 Price;5 Cook;6 Richards;7 Brick;8 and Brick and Williamson.9 These investigators have found, in general, that in brass strip that shows directional variations in properties, tensile strength has a minimum value and elongation has a maximum value at 45&apos; to the rolling direction. The most pronounced directional properties have been found in material given the greatest reductions in rolling followed by high annealing temperatures. Recrystallization texture of brass has been variously reported as (II3)[II2], (ooi)[ioo], and a combination of (II0)[II5] and traces of the primary rolling texture, (110)[112]. The directional studies have been very informative, but actual tests appear to have been confined to material in its final condition. Tests at intermediate stages have received little attention although previous history of some materials has been partly considered. Perhaps the most comprehensive investigation was made by Cook,&apos; who studied the directional properties of 70-30 brass strip for which the final and penultimate, or next to the last, anneals and the final reductions were varied. He found that, for any given combination of penultimate anneal and final reduction, the tendency toward the development of directional properties was reduced as the temperature of the final anneal was decreased. In addition to drawing cups and making tensile tests of the finished material at various angles to the rolling direction, he measured the frequency and the angles of twins in grains for several specimens. Plots of his twin counts showed directionality for the materials that produced eared cups. The work reported in this paper was carried out to supplement the existing information concerning directional properties and recrystallization textures of annealed brass sheet and strip. These characteristics are of direct interest when the forming and drawing properties of such material are being considered. Among those who have made contributions in this field are Bass and G1ocker;l Bauer, Göler and Sachs;2 Phillips and Samans;3 Pratt;4 Price;5 Cook;6 Richards;7 Brick;8 and Brick and Williamson.9 These investigators have found, in general, that in brass strip that shows directional variations in properties, tensile strength has a minimum value and elongation has a maximum value at 45&apos; to the rolling direction. The most pronounced directional properties have been found in material given the greatest reductions in rolling followed by high annealing temperatures. Recrystallization texture of brass has been variously reported as (II3)[II2], (ooi)[ioo], and a combination of (II0)[II5] and traces of the primary rolling texture, (110)[112]. The directional studies have been very informative, but actual tests appear to have been confined to material in its final condition. Tests at intermediate stages have received little attention although previous history of some materials has been partly considered. Perhaps the most comprehensive investigation was made by Cook,&apos; who studied the directional properties of 70-30 brass strip for which the final and penultimate, or next to the last, anneals and the final reductions were varied. He found that, for any given combination of penultimate anneal and final reduction, the tendency toward the development of directional properties was reduced as the temperature of the final anneal was decreased. In addition to drawing cups and making tensile tests of the finished material at various angles to the rolling direction, he measured the frequency and the angles of twins in grains for several specimens. Plots of his twin counts showed directionality for the materials that produced eared cups. THE objectives of this communication are to present the solid-solution strengthening data for silver-base zinc single crystals and to evaluate the importance of strength contributions from several mechanisms through the use of this data combined with that for the silver-base aluminum case.&apos; Some features of the yield point behavior of silver-base zinc crystals were previously reported.&apos; Silver-base zinc alloys were prepared by induction melting 99.99 pct Ag with 99.9 pct Zn in high-purity graphite crucibles contained in argon-filled quartz tubes. After the first melting, the ingots were cut into short lengths, redistributed in the molds, and remelted in order to reduce solute-concentration variations. Alloy single crystals were then grown from the melt through the use of a modified Bridgeman technique which consisted of lowering the graphite crystal mold through a hot zone at a rate of 3/8 in. per hr. As in the melting operation, the molds were contained in argon-filled quartz tubes. Gage lengths 2 cm in length were introduced by both spark machining (circular cross sections) and abrading and acid etching (rectangular cross section) followed by electropolishing (a comparison of the critical resolved shear-stress values prepared by the two techniques showed no differences in strength values). The final cross-sectional areas of the crystals were approximately 5 sq mm. Prior to testing, the crystals were annealed at 600°C for 20 hr in argon atmospheres, furnace-cooled, and lightly electropolished. Crystal orientations were determined using the back-reflection method. The tensile testing was done on a Model FM Instron at a strain rate of 1(T4 per sec. Test temperatures of 77", 200°, and 400°K were attained by immersing the specimens in liquid nitrogen, dry ice-acetone mixtures, and silicone oil, respectively. The critical resolved shear-stress (CRSS) values for silver-base zinc crystals as a function of composition and testing temperature are given in Fig. 1. It will be noted that the CRSS for silver-base zinc solid solutions, as in the silver-base aluminum1 case, depends on temperature in a manner typical of fcc solid solutions: at high temperatures (-300°K and above), the CRSS is relatively temperature-independent but becomes strongly dependent on temperature at lower testing temperatures. A reasonable picture of solid-solution strengthening for silver-rich solutions at room temperature based on "direct" strengthening mechanisms3 is as follows. Since silver alloys have low stacking-fault energies, extended dislocations are expected and it is possible that Suzuki locking4 makes the major contribution to the room-temperature solute strengthening. This provides essentially temperature-independent strengthening since thermal motions of the dislocation line are not large enough to aid the dislocation in escaping the solute atmosphere extending over the fault width. BEFORE describing the experience with the Chinese on the Rand and the work they have accomplished, it will be necessary, sary, first, to give a brief account of labor-conditions in the Transvaal since the war, and then to show how the necessity of importation of labor arose. As is well known, the Transvaal mines are run on the dual system of labor-that is, the rough work is done by colored laborers under the superintendence of white men. From the start of mining operations in South Africa there has been the cry of shortness of native labor, due in great measure to the failure of Kaffirs to work continuously in the mines. While he works, the Kaffir is a satisfactory laborer, but his period of service is short, averaging about nine months. People unacquainted with the Kaffir have maintained that, by offering a higher wage and better accommodation, better results would be obtained from the native workers, but an increased wage simply aggravates the trouble. The Kaffir&apos;s wants are few. While at work he spends little of his money, and before long has sufficient capital with which to buy wives and become a gentleman of leisure. Doubling the wage of the Kaffir means that he acquires a competency in half the time, so that his period of service is correspondingly reduced. In 1899, before the war, there was always a cry about the scarcity of Kaffir labor. The highest number of natives at work was in July and August, 1899, when nearly 100,000 were employed. At the outbreak of hostilities the Kaffirs were scattered far and near, many doing well during the war by working for the military authorities. One of the most complicated and potentially one of the most promising secondary recovery methods is that of underground combustion. A number of field tests1,2,3 have been performed recently, apparently indicating that the underground combustion process is technically feasible. Relatively little has been published concerning laboratory or theoretical investigations of the underground combustion process. A few results of laboratory tube runs have been published4,5 and these data are valuable in understanding the process. The tube run data also emphasize the complexity of the thermal recovery process. Under various conditions, problems in heat transfer, multiphase fluid flow and combustion rates arise. For example, at low temperatures the combustion process proceeds so slowly that the front cannot be propagated. It is a problem in heat transfer to predict what injection rate of air is necessary to sustain combustion in a particular reservoir. Certain fluid flow aspects of underground combustion have been studied by Wilson, et a13. In the development of some of the flow equations, assumptions of adiabatic combustion were made. Vogel and Krueger1 have devised an analog model of the heat conduction process for a constant temperature cylindrical source moving radially outward in a homogeneous conducting medium. Jenkins and Ramey7, in a discussion of the Vogel and Krueger paper, present an analytical solution of a heat conduction problem related to problems considered by Vogel and Krueger. In the present paper an idealized model of the heat conduction problem is considered, which is more general than the model of Vogel and Krueger or Jenkins and Ramey. In particular, initial well heating, vertical heat losses and arbitrary frontal velocities are included. Equations for the temperature are obtained in terms of integrals. These integrals have been evaluated numerically for the case of frontal movement corresponding to a constant air injection rate and the case of constant frontal velocity. These results are presented graphically. From these graphs one may estimate conditions under which nearly adiabatic temperatures are obtained. The application of these results requires some knowledge of reservoir thermal properties, combustion rates and residual fuel content. Assuming no vertical losses it is possible to obtain explicit evaluations of these integrals in the linear con- stant velocity case and in the radial case corresponding to a constant air injection rate. PRESENTATION OF RESULTS The geometry of the radial system is illustrated in Fig. 1 where the reservoir is represented as a slab of thickness h. It is not unlikely in fact it is probable, that these huge stores of petroleum may ultimately be proven to exist within the present boundaries of the U.S.S.R. The size of the country is almost beyond imagination it is 2.7 times as big as the United States. Great sedimentary basins exist in all its different geological provinces, much of which are entirely untested and barely prospected. Oil in commercial quantities is actually produced from formations in every period from the Devonian to the Pleistocene. In the Emba region alone, 300 salt domes are known with an estimate of 700 still to be found. Only 22 of the 300 have been drilled and all showed oil. Of the 22 domes drilled six are now producing. The deformation mechanisms occurring in polycrys-talline, commercially pure titanium and a Ti-8 pct A1 alloy have been investigated and compared to earlier results by Levine on high-purity titanium single crystals and by Conrad on commercially pure titanium. In accord with Levine, two consecutive deformation mechanisms are observed to exist below 500°K with the transition temperature between mechanisms, Tc, strongly dependent upon interstitial composition. T, is found to be 210°. 375° -430°, and 450°K for alloys A large number of investigations have been conducted to determine the rate-controlling mechanisms of plastic deformation occurring in fcc and bcc metals. Very few investigations of a similar nature have been conducted for hexagonal metals. In fact, until very recently, magnesium is the only hexagonal metal which has been systematically investigated for determination of the rate-controlling deformation mechanisms.1"3 From these investigations, it was concluded that basal slip below 420°K occurs by the intersection of forest dislocations,1&apos;3 while for prismatic slip the Peierls mechanism is rate-controlling at low temperatures with interstitial compositions of 0.024, 0.42, 0.61, and 1.13 at. pct expressed in terns of oxygen equivalents. The low-temperature mechanism is found to be an impurity obstacle mechanism in contrast to Levine&apos;s earlier conclusion of the Peierls barrier. Measurement of the activation parameters for deformation and estimation of the force-distance profile of the obstacles show their retarding force to be effective over longer distances from the obstacle as the interstitial composition increases. and thermally activated cross slip at higher temperatures. 2 The potential technological importance of titanium alloys has prompted recent studies of the deformation and fracture characteristics of titanium and its alloys. 4-8 Levine&apos; systematically investigated the low-temperature deformation behavior of high purity titanium single crystals oriented for either basal or prismatic slip. It was concluded that the Peierls mechanism was rate-controlling at temperatures below 210°K, while above this temperature an undefined mechanism was rate-controlling. Conrad 7,8 concluded from an analysis of the composition dependence of the critical shear stress at 0°K and measurement of the activation parameters that the low-temperature deformation of titanium is controlled by an impurity

FORMERLY great divergence of opinion existed in regard to the influence of copper in steel, as affecting its various physical properties. More recently the investigations of Stead,1 Breuil,2 Wigham,3 Burgess and Aston,4 Ball and Wingham,5 Miiller,6 Dillner,7 and others have shown fairly good agreement in the major points. Copper steel has been shown by these investigators to possess special properties which make it valuable for certain uses. The general range of composition of the useful alloys of copper and iron, and of copper, iron, and carbon, has been quite definitely established, for the former by Burgess and Aston,8 and for the latter by Breuil 9 and Stead.10 Stead 11 has removed one difficulty in reconciling certain of the earlier data by calling particular attention to the influence of carbon in copper steels. Another point which caused confusion in the earlier investigations, particularly in regard to " red-shortness," was the presence of sulphur. Failure to note the presence of sulphur often led to attributing " red-shortness " to the presence of small amounts of copper. Turner 12 has called attention to the fact that where copper exists in an iron ore it often occurs as the sulphide, so that the presence of copper in steel made from such ores might also, necessarily, mean the presence of sulphur. It is evident that the effect in this case might be quite different than where pure copper was added.

INTRODUCTION A way of producing 3,000 tpd from the El Mochito Mine was needed. Of this production, 2,000 tpd must come from the San Juan orebody. The original sub-level stoping method did not give satisfactory results due to ground instability, and the highly irregular ore/waste contacts encountered . The experience gained from the initial system helped guide research into the ground instability problem. Results from this work, combined with knowledge gained about the orebcdy configuration, defined constraints that were previously not fully appreciated. These constraints, and others, combined with objectives, were considered together to develop a new mining method. No single technique was found to be suitable, so a hybrid mining system was developed. A combination of ramping, cut and fill, and vertical crater retreat, with an option to use top heading and benching was developed. To complement the mining system, the type of equipment needed was decided upoun. Also, to support the mining system at this expanded rate of product ion, major modifications of existing infrastructure were required. THE EL MOCHITO MINE The El Mochito Mine, of Rosario Resources Corporation, has been in continuous product ion since 198. The mine began operations in April of that yeas at a rate of 100 tpd. The reserves in 198 were 100,000 tons of silver ore assayed at 1,250 grams per tonne. As of the end of 1979, the El Mochito orebodies have produced over 5.6 million tonnes of ore averaging 516 grams per tonne silver, 6.8 lead, and 7.8% zinc. Present ore reserves are about 7.9 million tonnes, averaging 138 grams per tonne silver, 4.6% lead, and 8.7% zinc, with minor quantities of copper, cadmium and gold. An expansion plan to increase mill production two fold to 2,500 tonnes per day is underway. This expansion will require the mine to produce 3,000 tpd. The mine consists of numerous orebodies, all of which have been mined to a certain extent. Of all the orebodies, the San Juan contains 8% of known reserves. This amounts to about 6.7 million tonnes. The significance of the San Juan orebody to the future life of the El Mochito Mine is obvious. If the required mine production of 3,000 tpd is to be sustained, the San Juan must be the source of the majority of that production. Due to the mineability and overall logistics concerned with the other orebodies, the San Juan must be able to reach and maintain a production rate of 2,000 tpd by 1982. GEOLOGY OF THE SAN JUAN OREBODY The El Mochito Mine is a classic example of a chimney replacement deposit in limestone. Similar deposits axe found in Mexico, at the Naica, Providencia, and Santa Eulia Mines. The El Mochito Mine is located at the south- western end of the Sula Valley on the western edge of the Honduras Depression in the Central Cordillera and Central Highlands of Honduras in a setting of Mesozoic sediments. The orebodies occur in a structural basin developed between NNE trending normal faults and apparently hinged on the south end. Topographically, the Mochito Basin lies between the uplifted Santa Barbara mountain in the west and the Palmer Ridge on the east. The San Juan orebody occurs near the intersection of the NE trending San Juan fault and the ENE trending Porvenir fault. The downward continuation of the orebody is controlled by the westward rake of these NW and N dipping structures. The discovery of the San Juan orebody is attributed to analysis of structural evidence of known ore deposits by in-company geologists. The composition of the San Juan orebody is primarily garnet skarn, with local concentrations of hedenbergite and magnetite. The economically important sulfide mineralization consists of (in decreasing abundance), sphalerite , galena, pyrrhotite , and chalcopyrite. There is some indication that a Cu-Ag mineral such as tetrahedrite may also be present. The skarns were formed by replacement of the original limestone by hydrothermal water migrating upward roughly along the intersection between the Porvenir fault system and the San Juan fault system. Textural evidence suggests that the orebody is a composite of several pulses of hydrothermal activity which would explain, in pat, the great irregularity of the contacts and the large horizontal variation in mineralogy. A general pattern of skarn types can be seen in the orebody, partially accounting for the observed lateral variation in grades. This zonation is very generalized, and one or more zones may be missing in any given locality. The orebody is almost invaxiably surrounded by a 2 cm to 25 cm zone of bustamite skaxn with low values. MANY studies of the deformation behavior of materials under a superimposed hydrostatic pressure have shown that materials brittle at ambient pressure behave in a ductile manner under pressure. Thus, with a metal such as beryllium which possesses relatively low ductility, but otherwise exhibits quite useful physical and mechanical properties, hydrostatic pressure may be particularly useful for both forming beryllium shapes and studying its deformation behavior. In fact, it has been found1"4 that polycrystal-line beryllium in both ingot and powder form appears to behave in a more ductile manner on a macroscopic level in a hydrostatic pressure environment, and it has been suggested2 that this is due to activating a new slip mode. Furthermore, Andrews and Radcliffe5 have found pressure induced nonbasal dislocation activity in hot pressed beryllium. Recently6 it has been shown in "c-axis" compression tests under hydro-static pressures up to 28 kbars that the shear stress needed to cause slip with a Burgers vector out of the basal plane (pyramidal slip) does not change with increasing pressure in beryllium with a purity of some 99.5 pct. This material is equivalent or more pure than the beryllium used in the previous pressure studies. Thus, it appears, as suggested by Inoue et al.,3 that the hydrostatic pressure affects the fracture stress rather than the stress necessary to activate pyramidal slip in beryllium. However, in "c-axis" pressure tests on high purity 12 zone pass beryllium (˜50 ppm total impurities) the macroscopic compression stress needed to cause pyramidal slip was considerably lower than that at ambient pressure.6 It has further been shown that alloying beryllium with nickel and copper in the range 2-5 wt pct also favors the occurrence of pyramidal slip in "c-axis" compression tests,7&apos;8 while lower amounts of nickel and copper do not have significant effects. In the present study the combined effect of hydrostatic pressure and alloying high purity beryllium on the shear stress needed to cause pyramidal slip has been ascertained. A 2.5 wt pct Cu alloy was selected as the first alloy to study as this level of copper did favor pyramidal slip at room pressure. A high purity (12 zone pass) single crystal of beryllium 0.3 by 0.1 by 0.1 in. was cut and polished by an orientation and lapping technique8 so that the top and bottom compression surfaces were parallel and within 3 min of arc to the (0001) plane and the sides parallel to the {l010} and {ll20} planes. In these compression specimens, therefore, the resolved shear stress was nearly zero on both the basal and prism planes, and slip was restricted to pyramidal systems. Analysis of slip traces on the two lateral surfaces served to accurately identify the active slip planes.6&apos;9 The pressure unit was a modified piston-cylinder device fitted with a manganin transducer coil arrangement which continuously monitored and recorded the hydro-static pressure. The load on the specimen was measured by a strain gage load cell which operated entirely within the pressure chamber. This load cell was calibrated before and after each pressure cycle at room pressure in situ and the calibration did not vary more than ±1 pet. These techniques and devices have been previously described in more detail.6 Successively higher compressive stresses were applied to the single crystal under a superimposed hydrostatic pressure until fracture occurred. The strain rate was (4.5 ± 2.0) x 10-6 sec-1 and the average rate of pressure application and release was approximately 0.3 kbars per min. As the load on the specimen was applied by the piston which was used to increase the hydrostatic pressure, the pressure increased during the compression test. This increase ranged from 0.0 to 0.8 kbars, and the maximum hydrostatic pressures are quoted in Fig. 1. The lateral surfaces of the specimen were examined in a light microscope after each pressurization/stress cycle so that the stress at the onset of {1122} pyramidal slip could be ascertained. Post compression height measurements allowed the plastic strain in the specimen to be evaluated to within 0.03 pct. The resulting compression stress-plastic strain curve is shown in Fig. 1 with results of a "c-axis" test on a similar Be-2.5 wt pct Cu single
