That variations in the humidity of the air and in the moisture content of a mixture of broken solids being separated electrostatically cause trouble is not new.' Much of the reputation for unreliability commonly ascribed to the electrostatic separation processes is probably due to this one factor alone. Some operators dry thoroughly before separating; and while this is good in many instances, there are others in which it is not the remedy for trouble. Some mixtures behave best in very dry air and with the mixtures fed to the separator while hot to reduce the adsorbed water content. On the other hand, an overdried mixture on coming to equilibrium with more humid air, has been known to take up moisture selectively on one family of particles, as of coal in the presence of slate and clay, and give sharper electrostatic separation. From these observations it is concluded that there is a permissible moisture content for a particle and also for the atmosphere surrounding it, if in equilibrium, at which the particle will have a conductivity or cntact potential2-4 that is ideal for electrostatic separation. This permissible moisture content varies between a wide range of limits for the different materials that are are and with the kind of electrostatic separating process used. Water can be present as a result of adsorption and condensation from the atmosphere, as an accumulation before or during mining, or as a residue from a previous process step. The water may exist as a liquid film or as an adsorbed layer of vapor. If the water exceeds permissible limits it must be removed. Its state determines the method. Drying by evaporation is necessary for adsorbed water, for part of the liquid-film water (that is, up to several percent of the dry weight), and for free water in the internal structure. Large water contents may be removed by drainage Or filtration. At just what point mechanical removal should cease and drying by evaporation begin depends upon the method of mechanical removal and its cost. Particles can also be separated according to their differences in dielectric constant when suspended in a liquid of intermediate dielectric constant. Recovery of this liquid presents a a problem' Permissible Moisture The adsorbed moisture on the outer surface of minerals can be quickly removed or replaced. Accordingly, in speaking of adsorbed moisture contents, either that of the solid or that of the surrounding air may be considered, the two values being connected by a distribution coefficient which varies with the temperature. However, such a condition does not necessarily exist in processes where an initially dry material is suddenly introduced into an atmosphere having a partial pressure of water vapor or where a moist material is suddenly introduced into a dry atmosphere. Titanium has been estimated to comprise about 0.65 per cent of the earth's crust and ranks fourth in abundance among the metallic elements suitable for engineering uses. In spite of this, applications of titanium for structural purposes have not as yet been developed. Its commercial exploitation has been largely confined to the chemical industries and the production of paints and pigments; no doubt because of the difficulties that lie in the way of preparing the pure ductile metal. Published reports, however, indicate that ductile titanium can be prepared and possesses some unique properties. This, together with the occurrence in this country of several important titaniferous deposits, has led the Bureau of Mines to investigate processes for the production of metallic titanium, methods required for its fabrication, and the properties that may be produced in this interesting metal. Methods of Preparing Metallic Titanium Many early investigators claimed to have isolated metallic titanium; but in the light of present knowledge, it seems that they really had produced various mixtures of carbides and nitrides that have a metallic appearance but are brittle, hard, and unworkable. The first metallic titanium pure enough to be malleable when cold was produced by Hunter1 in the early part of the twentieth century. Kroll,~ van Arkel,~ and Fast,4 subsequently confirmed the facts that pure titanium is a. ductile metal and that small amounts of impurities were responsible for previous reports of brittleness. When heated, titanium reacts chemically with various gases, such as hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen; if the volume of gas thus absorbed is too great, the metal becomes brittle and unworkable. The principal difficulty in making ductile titanium is prevention of such contamination, and the success of a given process may be judged by the completeness with which it solves this difficulty in a practical manner. Of the gases mentioned, hydrogen is the least objectionable, since its absorption by the metal is completely reversible and, although dimensional changes occur and absorption of hydrogen embrittles the metal, the gas may be removed readily by heating in a high vacuum for a short time. On the other hand, the absorption of oxygen or nitrogen results in the formation of permanent solid solutions of the oxide and nitride, which cannot be decomposed by the strongest reducing agentsz with sufticient completeness to restore the inherent ductility of the metal. Discussion of the paper of EMIL GATHMANN, presented at the San Francisco meeting September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 104, August, 1915, pp. 1485 to 1492 H. W. LASH, Cleveland, 0.-I have found in practical experience that it is not objectionable to have some blow-holes in ingots. They enlarge during solidification and have a tendency to cause the steel to rise. If they are of fairly small size they weld up quite readily, especially where they are some distance from the surface. In that way a pipe, which is much more detrimental than a few small blow-holes, is prevented. There is a very great difference in the formation of blow-holes in steel. You get one condition in soft steel and entirely another condition in rail carbon, or the still higher grades. The figures that are given in Mr. Gathmann's paper I imagine are taken from the higher carbons, as it is very seldom that piping occurs in soft steel. J. W. COMSTOCK (author's reply to discussion *).-The discussion of this paper has been of such volume and interest as to constitute in itself a sufficient excuse for the paper, even though the paper itself may have been as much in error as some of its critics have maintained. Mr. Howard does not appear to realize some very practical facts that the opponents of his theory have advanced. Among these are: the coarsely crystalline fracture of the nucleus of a transverse fissure, so different from the smooth fatigue break around it; the occurrence of fissures in large numbers in certain heats or rollings of rails, while other heats or rollings do not develop them; and the much smaller proportion of transverse fissures found in rails rolled .from reheated blooms as compared with direct-rolled rails. Cobalt clearly increased the activity of carbon in austenite and in ferrite. This effect of cobalt on carbon activity Plausibly accounted for the effect of cobalt on accelerating the austenite to pearlite transformation. Cobalt was found to have only a slight effect on carbon diffisivity in various Fe-Co and Fe-Co-W-Mo austenites, but was found to decrease carbon diffusivity in Fe-Co ferrite. THE effect of cobalt in steel is unique in that it is the only element that reduces hardenability by accelerating the austenite to pearlite reaction. The results of several excellent investigations aimed at explaining the role of cobalt have been published,1"7 but a complete understanding is still lacking. In addition, cobalt significantly enhances the resistance to softening or tempering of highly alloyed highspeed and hot-work tool steels. The resistance to tempering is related to the secondary hardening reactions associated with the fourth stage of tempering during which carbides of molybdenum, tungsten, and/or vanadium form in a martensite matrix. The effect of cobalt on secondary hardening reactions in high-alloy tool steel has received considerable attention, but a full explanation of the reactions involved has not been developed. Inasmuch as austenite to pearlite transformation and secondary hardening involve carbide formation, the present authors believed that the role of cobalt in effecting carbon activity and diffusivity in austenite and in ferrite was important to a fuller understanding of the phenomena involved. TO investigate the effect of cobalt on the activity coefficient of carbon in austenite, an approach was used similar to that used by Darken17 in his experiments on the effect of silicon, manganese, and molybdenum on carbon activity and diffusivity in austenite. The Aspen Mining District is situated at the eastern edge of the system of stratified rocks of western Colorado, where this edge meets the ridge of metamorphic granite which divides the State into two unequal parts. In following the valley of the Roaring Fork westward from the continental divide towards Aspen, one passes through a country of granite and gneiss, with no sedimentary rocks until the town is nearly reached. At this point the Cambrian quartzites first make their appearance, lying on the granites, with a dip of from 30' to 45 to the northwest. Beyond these quartzites and conformably upon them lie dolomites, limestones, shales, porphyries and sandstones, gradually flattening in general dip as one proceeds westward, but much disturbed by local foldings and faultings.

STUDY of diffusion in molten substances is important in at least two respects. Diffusion data, combined with thermodynamic and kinetic information, throw light on the structure of the liquid state. Moreover, a knowledge of diffusion coefficients and their temperature dependence is useful in ascertaining the controlling step in many metallurgical reactions. Although diffusion measurements have been made on a number of molten salts, slags, metals, and alloys,'-'" the results available are still limited and widely scattered, especially for the high temperature melts. It is the purpose of this investigation to establish reliable procedures for the measurement of self-diffusion coefficients in high temperature melts and to use these procedures to determine the self-diffusion coefficients of iron in molten Fe-C alloys of different carbon contents. Experimental Measurement of self-diffusion coefficients in high temperature melts is usually carried out by using one of two methods. In the first, diffusion takes place between two cylindrical samples of the same material, one of which is made radioactive. The diffusion coefficient is calculated from the radioactivity penetration curve in the solidified sample after the diffusion. In the second method, samples contained in capillaries of an inert substance are immersed in an infinite reservoir of the same material. Either the material in the capillary or that in the reservoir is made radioactive and the diffusion coefficient is calculated from the change of the radioactivity of the sample in the capillary after the diffusion. The second method is simpler because a radioactivity penetration curve is not needed for the calculation of the diffusion coefficient; however,.it is valid only when no convection has occurred in the capillary during the diffusion. A radioactivity penetration curve is therefore always useful in indicating that the required conditions for the diffusion are ful- filled. Towers and Chipman" recently studied the self-diffusion of calcium and silicon in CaO-Al,O,-SiO, melts by using the capillary method. Instead of measuring the change of the radioactivity of the sample in the capillary, they autoradiographed the sample after the diffusion and calculated the diffusion coefficient from the intensity distribution of the autoradiograph. Their method is useful when the radioactive isotopes are weak ß-emitters, but is very difficult, if not impossible, to apply to cases involving strong ß or y-emitters. For such cases, sectioning of the sample according to the method of Morgan and Kitchener' may be used for the construction of the radioactivity penetration curve. Predictions of creep closure for periods ranging up to more than 1,000 years are needed for designing a radioactive waste repository in a salt formation. Such long-term predictions must be based on the use of laboratory and field test results extrapolated by numerical modeling. Laboratory test results are presented which show highly variable creep behavior for salts from different sites as well as salts from the same site. Comparisons of measured creep closures against predicted closures are presented for two deep boreholes in Louisiana salt domes and for an exploratory shaft and drift in southeastern New Mexico bedded salt (WIPP). These data illustrate the significant uncertainties involved in long-term closure predictions and indicate the critical need for site-specific, in situ closure measurements over extended periods of time for repository design.

During the past several years the steel casting industry has made studies of heavy castings in which the test bar has been taken from heavy sections rather than from attached or separately cast coupons. It has been noted that the ductility properties of these heavy sections are often lower than those normally expected. Such lowered ductility is usually accompanied by a spotty test bar fracture and the ductility values often can be greatly improved if a low-temperature aging treatment is given to the casting. A loss of ductility of this type is considered "abnormal," since it is not accompanied by an increase of tensile strength or hardness, and "temporary" when the ductility can be restored by aging, The cure of such an abnormal condition represents a real improvement in the quality of the steel. Some hundreds of previous investigations, largely qualitative in nature, have established beyond reasonable doubt that hydrogen is normally present in newly manufactured steel and that this gas, in small amounts, can cause a temporary ab- normal loss of ductility. The commonly observed association of high gas content and low ductility has given strong evidence for the presumption that hydrogen, possibly assisted by other gases, is the primary cause of the low ductility observed. Accordingly, the Steel Founders' Society of America has, since Nov. I, 1944, sponsored investigations at Battelle Memorial Institute whose primary objective is to obtain quantitative information on the relation of the amount of hydrogen and nitrogen in steel, together with associated methods of steelmaking and treatment, to low-ductility effects and porosity. In order that these investigations might proceed on a quantitative basis, hydrogen analyses of a precision considerably higher than any previously reported in the literature were necessary. 'The method chosen was selected entirely on the basis that it had the highest probability of freedom from uncontrollable errors and will be described in detail in another publication.' Briefly, the method used consisted of the hot extraction of solid pieces of steel weighing from 45 to 50 g in a highly evacuated quartz tube maintained at 1050°C (1925°F) for a period of approximately 40 hr. The greatest precautions were taken to eliminate blanks and insure a sound gas-collection system. vacuum and temperature conditions were maintained automatically. THE presence of soluble base metals in precious-metal ores usually precludes cyanidation as the best method of treatment. The laboratory experiments described in this paper show the possibility of cyanidation of gold-silver ores containing less than 0.5 per cent. of cyanide-soluble copper and the effect of zinc in the cyanide solution. PART 1.-COPPER IN CYANIDATION The proposed process of cyanidation of precious-metal ores containing copper is based on the regeneration of about 80 per cent. of the cyanide used in the dissolution of the copper. The method of regeneration involves a combination of the sulfide and the acid precipitation of the copper and silver. The resultant solution is made alkaline with lime, and the gold is precipitated with zinc dust.

THE production of fluorspar is one of the smaller nonmetallic indus-tries in the United States with a capital investment-about $10,000,000. Shipments from United States mines' in 1936 totaled 176,231 short tons valued at $3,111,268, an average price of $17.65 per ton. It is now generally recognized that the gravitational method of geophysical surveying is a valuable aid in elucidating the geological structure of the subsoil and enables the practical geologist to deduce the presence of useful deposits. The particular suitability of the torsion balance to the location of large and important subterranean structures has given rise to a wide application of this method by many of the important oil companies in their search for future supplies, and so intense have been these efforts that little has been heard of the method in other connections, with the exception of occasional references to its application in the location of hidden deposits of metallic ores, salt and lignite, and a number of accounts of its use in the elucidation of geological structures. Its success in the location of salt domes is well known, and establishes it as one of the most important of the geophysical methods, especially for the indirect location of oil. In the British Isles, however, no large occurrence of oil is likely to be revealed, and here the practical application of the gravitational method has been restricted almost entirely to the search for ores. This type of survey possesses well marked characteristics, and presents a gravitational problem that has necessitated the development of a special and probably unusual plan of campaign, full details of which it is hoped will shortly be published. The problems and difficulties encountered in this work are of necessity fundamentally related to those met with in the search for oil by means of the torsion balance, but they also possess several special and distinctive features which undoubtedly differentiate them from the obstacles confronting the oil prospector, and which call for special consideration and treatment. In certain of the various oil-producing areas of the world, and particularly in the Gulf Coast region, the geology may be regarded as comparatively simple, while the oil is usually associated with a large and well defined structure such as a salt dome or anticline, which is capable of giving gravitational indications sufficiently extensive to be detected by the torsion balance over a fairly wide area of the ground surface. Measurements of the solubility of lead in liquid iron were made at 1550°, 1600°, 1650°, and 1700°C using two different methods, i.e., 1) liquid iron-liquid lead equilibration and 2) liquid iron-lead vapor equilibration. LEAD was long considered insoluble in liquid iron1. Today steels containing 0.15 to 0.35 pct Pb are used. One laboratory has found a solubility of about 0.5 pet in the 1600°C range. The purposes of this paper are to describe the use of adjustable cut and draw tools as a control test of drawing properties and to point out that no other well-known test or combination of tests determines this quality in zinc and zinc alloys. Rolled zinc has been used for making drawn articles, particularly battery cans, for many years. The development of rolling treatments satisfactory for these purposes followed the usual course of trial and error experimentation depending upon cooperation with customers to determine what type of material was suitable. A quick test of drawing quality was highly desirable, of course. Scleroscope hardness and temperll having no apparent relation to drawing quality, were used simply to check the duplication of rolling treatment and grade of metal. The dynamic ductility1 test, on the other hand, was believed to be so like the drawing operation as to provide a reliable index and came to be taken as the criterion of good drawing properties. Faith in this test was strengthened by the fact that metal having the highest ductility was more satisfactory for operations, such as the manufacture of battery cups, that required several redraws. No distinction was made at that time in specifying metal as to whether it was to be subjected to simple cut and draw, redrawing or forming operations. It developed, however, that in some grades of metal the highest ductility did not coincide with the most satisfactory quality when the material was used for a single draw. When zinc-base alloys, with their wider ranges of effective rolling treatments, came into increased use, their dynamic ductility and drawing quality appeared to have no connection whatever. Furthermore, comparisons of known drawing quality with other physical properties of the metal, including tensile strength, elongation and dynamic cold bends, were fruitless in yielding any clear relationship. Almost any test value produced in one piece of metal could be duplicated by another rolling or annealing treatment with attendant different drawing characteristics.
