In many years' experience as a maker and purchaser of cast-iron coated pipe, I have never met with any standard form of specifications for such. Each water-works company, employing a hydraulic engineer, has, under his direction, prepared complete specifications for the particular conditions required; but I cannot find that any two are alike; and each foundry, in bidding for the supply of such pipe, makes the price to cover the conditions' required. I, therefore, have the honor of offering to the Institute a form of specifications for cast-iron coated water-pipe, that may be found useful to water-works companies and others requiring pipe of this kind. The conditions are all reasonable, and can be carried out by makers without additional cost, and with advantage to the purchaser. Section 1 gives the kind of pipe, with its general characteristics. Section 2 specifies that neutral pig-iron shall be used, since such iron possesses the strength required, and is uniform in its shrinkage. From the theories of flow and fracture it is shown that the difference in reciprocals of the transition temperatures (OK) is a quantitative measure of temper ernbrittlement. Experimental data are given which support this conclusion. STUDIES of temper embrittlement have been made with various viewpoints; some involved a study of the kinetics of the reaction,',2'" others were concerned with changes in the mechanical properties," . and still others investigated the structural differences between the embrittled and unembrittled states by means of the microscope," -ray ,' measurements of electrode potential," and electrical resistivity." In all these studies, the difference in impact properties was the criterion for distinguishing between the embrittled and unembrittled states. By common agreement the difference in transition temperatures is now taken as a measure of the degree of embrittlement, and this measure is used as the quantitative measure upon which studies of the phenomenon are based. Vidal and Jolivet"' suggested that the degree of embrittlement was the same whether measured by impact or by a slow bend test. Their conclusion was based on tests at constant temperature. Jaffe and Buffum" using the impact and slow bend test showed that, for a given degree of embrittlement, the difference in transition temperatures varied with the method of testing. Hultgren and Chang" showed that the difference in transition temperature produced by the V-notched Charpy impact test was not the same as the value produced by the keyhole-notched impact test. This is a very fundamental point because there can be no true measure of temper embrittlement unless it is invariant with respect to the test method. Theory The purpose of this analysis is to show how the transition temperature depends on the stress distribution and the state of the material. The criterion for fracture may be stated as follws: where iF is some function of the principle stresses and F is a critical condition depending on the state of the metal. Similarly yielding occurs when Where is another function of the prin-ciple stresses and Y is a critical value depending on the state of the material. There is some controversy as to the exact form of the function f,.(u,, u,, us) but most experimental data give the following criterion:= where 8, and 6, = 21 or 0. Combinations of 6, and 8, give the various criteria such as the normal stress, the hydrostatic tension, and the maximum shear stress laws. Agreement is general that the octahedral shear stress law adequately describes the yield condition. where the bracketed factor will be called the design factor and depends on the stress distribution. THE sixteenth annual meeting of the Woman's Aux¬iliary, A. I. M. E., was held Tuesday morning, Feb. 16, at the Engineering Societies Building. The meeting was well attended, there being 99 registered from the metropolitan area and 78 from the sections throughout the United States. Mrs. Sharpless, the secretary, read the minutes of the annual meeting held a year ago, after which Mrs. Bassett, the president, gave her address of welcome. Mrs. Bassett said in part: "I would like, at this time, to welcome you all to this, our sixteenth annual meeting, and to express my appreciation to all the national officers and members of the board of directors for their loyal support and for the excellent work done by the chairmen of sections and their members. It is with much pleasure that I look back upon my visits with the sections in Washington, Arizona, Northern and Southern California, Chicago, Colorado, Western Pennsylvania and Utah before I assumed the office of president. During the last year I have much enjoyed meeting with the sections in Boston, Washington and New York. It is our duty to see that the achievement for 1932 be equal to that of the year that has just passed."

In the examination of an undeveloped prospect a decision must be arrived at from an inspection of the outcrops and the exposures in a few shallow pits. Prospects that are offered for sale rarely expose any important quantity of good ore, work having usually been stopped when the immediate exploration no longer yielded favorable results. It should be borne in mind, furthermore, that a great majority of prospects have been examined many times, and if of conspicuous promise, would have been acquired-for development. In most cases the problem for the engineer, therefore, is to discover the traces of a valuable mineralization that has disappeared through solution, or the conditions that indicate the possibility, or probability, of underlying secondary enrichments. The available data being meager, every feature should be the subject of careful study-the condition of the outcrop, the structural relationships, the associations of minerals, the alterations of wall rocks, the chances for underlying enrichments, and so forth, as well as the actual assay value of the material exposed. It is frequently advisable to spend the time and money necessary to have trenches dug at various significant points along a promising outcrop; such exposures, even if the depth attained is slight, often disclose conditions that are not apparent at the actual surface, as for example, the existence of soft minerals and the distribution of the various minerals through the mass of the deposit. Trenches also permit samples to be taken from points that were not accessible during former examinations. Strong, persistent outcrops of uniform width may be taken to indicate the probable size and character of the underlying vein,

In discussing the problem of abnormal magnetic polarization, C. A. Heilandl† emphasized the unfortunate fact that our knowledge of the geological and physical conditions relating to such occurrences is very limited and that a more detailed insight into their physical causes would be extremely valuable for interpreting measured anomalies. He also pointed out that to arrive at quantitative physical formulas that would express the conditions that cause abnormal polarization many more occurrences of the kind would have to be recorded. The first part of this paper is a contribution to such descriptions. Abnormal Magnetic Polarization in South Africa The occurrence was mapped in the course of a magnetometric survey carried out about 70 miles to the east of Johannesburg and east of the Witwatersrand gold field, for the purpose of detecting the position of the suboutcrop of certain magnetite-bearing shales that occur in the lower portion of the Witwatersrand system of sediments, shales whose position in section in relation to the ore-bearing members of the same system of sediments are known. In this case the shales are covered by younger strata several hundred feet thick. Lines of magnetometric traverse were run at right angles to the strike for a strongly magnetic body. This body is a shale zone in the Witwatersrand sediments and has a strike of N.20°E. (magnetic) and dips 15" to the east. The field work was done by a vertical intensity field balance (A. Schmidt principle). The plotting is done in such a way that the sign is reversed from that usually employed in the northern hemisphere, so that a positive profile is obtained in abnormal cases while the same conditions in the northern hemisphere would give a negative one. This method of recording should be kept in mind in reading what follows.

Granulated sinter mixes of three iron ore types were prepared with a range of water contents in a laboratory investigation. The mean diameter of the granulated mixes and the void fraction of beds of the mixes were determined experimentally. Pressure drop measurements over a range of flow rates were made in a laboratory permeameter with pressure tappings at several depths in the bed. The Ergun equation was applied to the results to determine the shape factor of the granulated mixes. Pressure readings down the bed were used to estimate the local void fraction in the bed using the Ergun equation and the calculated granule shape factors. It was found that there was a decrease in void fraction with depth in the bed. The significance of this and the variation of shape factor values with the amount of water used for granulation is examined in relation to the strength of granules of the sinter mixes. The experimental and mathematical techniques presented may be useful in interpreting the behavior of the permeability of sinter beds after ignition.

Mining, which is at least twenty cen-turies old, was at first, and long, wholly a practical art. Little more than two centuries have elapsed since the inception of the idea that general education and a knowledge of natural science would be of advantage to those engaged in the mining industry. Though schools of mining began to develop in Europe early in the eighteenth century the concept of educational preparation, for technical conduct of the industry was slow in winning general acceptance in the industry itself. John Hays Hammond, in his autobiography, recalls that when he sought employment with a mining company after he had graduated from Yale and Freiberg he had to assure its executive, before being even considered for employment, that he did not consider that he had learned anything about mining. This was as late as 1880. Existence in the industry of a prejudice against education of the academic type is perhaps an explanation why inadequate provision has been made by the mining industry for the continuing education of technical employees after they enter employment, although engineering education prior to engaging in industry has now won general acceptance. I am familiar with the existence of 'loop" courses for engineering graduates in metallurgical plants, of schemes for giving mining graduates "practical experience," and of the interest in vocational courses for workmen which sprang up in the period of labor shortage during and immediately following World War I (but which quickly died when the depression of 1921 again made experienced workmen available in sufficient supply), having been chairman of a committee appointed by the Mineral Industry Education Division to make a survey of existing provisions for post-employment training for engineers in our industry. The results of that survey, reported elsewhere, clearly indicate that it is inadequate as to amount; the aim of this paper is to present evidence for belief that it is also inadequate in quality. To avoid becoming too involved, no reference will be made here to post-employment vocational training for workmen, which is a subject differing so much from post-employment education for engineers as to require separate treatment. Neither will postgraduate education for metallurgical engineers be discussed, becadse a distinction must then be made between training for research work and for plant operation, whereas mining engineers engage almost exclusively in operations. Since the situation in the coal-mining industry has been discussed at several recent meetings, that also will be passed over, and what follows should be taken as a discussion applying exclusively to the metal-mining industry. Professional Development In the operations field (both in mining and metallurgy) the work to which a beginner is assigned is seldom closely related to previous academic education. A primary concern in the solution of any solid waste disposal problem is the characterization of the material. In the past, available methodology for the determination of coal refuse characteristics has been severely limited by the inseparable combination of organic and inorganic matter of which the refuse is comprised. The recent development of an electronic, low temperature asher which removes the organic material without alteration of the inorganic constituents has opened new areas of coal and coal refuse research. This study deals with the development of methodology for the characterization of Pennsylvania anthracite refuse through utilization of the low temperature asher. Seven samples of anthracite refuse were examined for verification of the methodology developed and information concerning the characteristics of the refuse.

IN our study of the mechanism of and the prevention of corrosion in stainless steels, it was considered of fundamental importance to obtain knowledge of the surface structure of such alloys. If corrosion resistance is due to a self-healing oxide layer, which like a paint film protects the underlying metal, it would be obviously relevant were the effort made to make the film less permeable and more adherent; for example, the surface might be expected to respond to an anodizing process, which is found successful in increasing the film thickness and corrosion resistance of aluminum. However, if passivity and corrosion resistance of stainless steels are due to another cause, the attack of the problem would follow another path. One of the most effective techniques for studying passivity and corrosion tendency is the measurement of the electrochemical potential. Not only can one determine by potential measurements whether a metal is active or passive, but also one can determine the degree of passivity and rate of transformation of passivity with time. Chemical media that build up or destroy passivity when in contact with the steel can also be classified by potential measurements. Something can be learned, too, of the effect of alloy additions such as molybdenum to 18-8, known to decrease corrosion of the alloy in chloride solutions. A study of alloys in previous investigations has sometimes included data on the electrochemical potentials. Tammann and Sotter1 measured the electrochemical potentials of alloys of iron-molybdenum and iron-chromium and reported the critical concentration of molybdenum or chromium at which passivity initiates. Strauss2 made similar measure-ments for the iron-chromium system. The electrochemical potential' has also been used to indicate carbide precipitated 18-8. In 18-8, heat-treated to precipitate carbide, active metal exists at the region of the grain boundaries, contrasted with passive metal within the grains, the active metal accounting for a resultant active potential. Robert T. Walker and Woodville J. Walker (Walker Engineering Corp., Salt Lake City)—Mr. Kinkel's article embodies, in condensed form, the results of the first detailed and complete geological survey that has ever been made of the long neglected but potentially very important West Shasta Copper-Zinc district, in Shasta County, California. In view of the difficulties of the terrain and the complexity of the geological structure, this represents a notable achievement, and it is with regret, therefore, that the writers find it necessary to differ from Mr. Kinkel's conclusions on two important points. The first has to do with the interpretation of two members of the stratigraphic column of formations in the district; for purposes of comparison, the description of these two members according to Mr. Kinkel is shown parallel to the description of these members according to the writers, see Fig. 14, Mr. Kinkel's nomenclature being used. The first member, which Mr. Kinkel terms the upper unit of the Balaklala rhyolite, consists of a single, massive, homogenous body of very silicious igneous rock, consisting almost wholly of quartz and albite, and averaging about 80 pct silica. Most geologists of the U. S. Geological Survey who have previously inspected the district have called it an alaskite. It is not a pile of several members, but is a single unit, without internal subdivisions. It has the form of a recumbent lens, approximately flat on the bottom and arched on top, several miles in diameter, and attaining a maximum thickness of 1000 to 1200 ft. It varies in texture from porphyritic to holocrystalline, and contains unusually large quartz phenocrysts up to 4 mm diam. Mr. Kinkel considers this formation to be a thick lava flow that is older than the overlying Kennett shale, while the writers interpret it as being intrusive, constituting a domed sill or laccolith that is younger than the Kennett shale. Their reasons are as follows: 1) This formation shows none of the features which within the writers' experience invariably accompany very silicious lava flows. Nowhere is it vesicular; nowhere does it contain any glass or its devitrified equivalent; nowhere does it contain flow breccia; and nowhere has it a ragged top, in spite of the fact that there is no evidence of surface erosion, which might have removed such a top.

Henry Carlisle: This is June, 1961, and my friend Arthur Bunker is on the other side of the tape recorder. I, Henry Carlisle, am pursuing the hobby of chronicling the interesting parts of the mining careers and the lives of well-known mining engineers. Now, Arthur, supposing we skip, for the time being, where you were born and brought up, and start right in with where you went to school. Arthur Bunker: I graduated from Taft School and then went to Yale, Sheffield Scientific School, and took a course in electrical engineering. I was quite fascinated by higher mathematics and physics, and this offered more in mathematics and physics than any other one of the engineering courses at that time. The school was only a three-year course, and so I graduated from there in 1916.

Chlorination and chloridization behaviors of pyrite, pyrrhotite, marcasite, chalcocite, covellite, galena, sphalerite, heazlewoodite, and elemental sulfur were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis. The possible reaction mechanisms are discussed on the basis of the theoretical weight changes and thermodynamic considerations. Chlorine is a more effective chloridizing agent than hydrogen chloride. In the light of the experimental results, a scheme for producing nonferrous metal chlorides, molten sulfur, and ferric oxide from complex sulfide flotation concentrates is discussed.

Sulfur isotopes are best used in conjunction with other geological studies to determine the origin of known deposits; concept-oriented exploration programs can then be developed to find similar deposits. Geochemical processes are capable of causing different S '41S" ratios in the minerals and fluids participating in natural reactions. Because the magnitude of the resultant isotopic difference is inversely proportional to temperature, sulfur isotopic studies can be used to determine the source of the sulfur in high temperature deposits. The narrow spread of sulfur isotopic values from ores related to cupolas of felsic intrusions suggests that the sulfur in the ore-forming fluids was derived from a fairly uniform source (such as the intrusions) rather than by heated ground water from the adjacent country rocks. However, geologic and isotopic evidence suggest that the sulfur of many nickel sulfide ores may have been derived from the country rocks rather than the associated mafic igneous rocks. This sulfurization hypothesis implies that mafic intrusions in sulfur-rich country rocks should be prime exploration targets. Sulfur isotopic analyses of sulfides in the mafic rocks may indicate whether sulfurization has occurred. In equilibrium geochemical reactions S" is concentrated in the minerals with the greater bonding strengths. Thus the isotopic compositions of coprecipitated sulfides that have not undergone exsolution may be used as geothermometers and to distinguish multiple periods of mineralization, post-ore metamorphism, etc. The sulfur isotopic compositions of coexisting sulfides at Butte, Mont., indicate that the copper minerals did not originate by simple replacement of pyrite. Geologic and isotopic evidence suggest that the mineralogical and isotopic zoning at Butte formed almost isothermally during the geochemical evolution of the ore-forming fluids upward and outward from the Central zone. Unidirectional reactions cause enrichment of S" in the products. At low temperatures the isotopic effects of bacterial and inorganic reactions are difficult to distinguish. Anaerobic sulfate-reducing bacteria apparently were responsible for the sulfur of Gulf Coast salt domes and for diagenetic pyrite in sandstone-type uranium deposits. Sulfur (and carbon) isotopic data suggest that the roll ore bodies of sandstone-type uranium deposits originated by limited inorganic oxidation of diagenetic pyrite rather than by bacterial activity. Accordingly roll ore bodies should be most numerous and thickest against those portions of the sandstone aquifer that contain pre-ore pyrite.

BeRyllium, magnesium, zinc and cadmium, together with mercury, constitute a coherent sub-group of the periodic system and these metals, excepting mercury, have been studied in sufficient detail by the new X-ray diffraction methods to prove their common adherence to the hexagonal close-packed type of crystal structure with a progressive increase in axial ratio as we pass through the group from beryllium to cadmium. The first four columns of Table 1 summarize the data on crystal structure of these metals reported in the International Critical Tables.' The last two columns are based on results obtained in the present investigation. Twinning has often been observed in zinc and cadmium. The general aspects of this twinning are abundantly illustrated by photomicrographs, diagrams, etc., in the papers by Romig, and Mathewson and Phillips reported to this Institute in 1927.2 A determination of the composition

The role of government in encouraging nonmetallics exports ranges from the ownership of an integrated mining company to partial or selective government ownership, to the sponsorship of exporter organizations. In certain cases, regional governments have a direct stake in the industrial minerals industry. This paper assesses the commercial impact of these involvements.

THE five serpentine masses exposed within the northern half of Riley County, Fig. 1, constitute a major part of the few exposures of igneous rock in Kansas.' Although not many subsurface data are available for this part of Riley County,2 six deep wellsV indicate that the basement complex lies between 2500 and 3000 ft below the earth's surface. A northwestward-trending ridge in the present basement surface, which extends across the northern half of Riley County, is indicated on Mettner's contour map.' The serpentine masses lie in a region that was active during Pennsylvanian and Permian time along two main tectonic trends, which may, in part at least, have developed contemporaneously." One trend is northeasterly, as evidenced by the Nemaha anticline, the Abilene anticline, the Voshell anticline, and many other smaller northeastward-trending folds. The other trend is northwesterly, as evidenced by the central Kansas uplift, the Salina basin syncline, and smaller northwestward-trending folds. The area of the Abilene anticline was actively deformed during much of this time, and the present surface rocks, for the most part Permian in age, show many normal faults." The Bala and Leonardville intrusions lie within a mile of the axis of the Abilene anticline, Fig. 1, as mapped by Wallace Lee;' the Randolph No. 1 and Randolph No. 2 intrusions lie within about 5 miles of the axis; and the Stockdale intrusion lies within about 8 miles of the axis. The igneous rocks have intruded horizontal or gently dipping limestones and shales that are late Permian in age.V he period of intrusion, according to Moore and Landes, was probably Cretaceous.' At present a detailed description of the petrography is available for only the Bala intrusion. Moore and Haynes' describe the rock at Bala as a green, serpentinized, porphyritic, peridotite breccia containing inclusions of shale. The ground mass consists chiefly of serpentine and calcite with considerable chromite (5 to 10 pct) and some magnetite. The phenocrysts consist principally of altered olivine with some altered augite and biotite. Although probably different in petrographic details, all the serpentine masses are somewhat similar in that 1) they consist of a dark green, fine-grained ground mass of igneous rock containing many xeno-liths composed of fragments of the neighboring sedimentary rock; 2) they tend to form small mounds on the landscape, thus indicating their greater resistance to weathering and erosion; and 3) they are magnetic. Previous Magnetic Survey of the Bala Intrusion: To the writer's knowledge, only the Bala intrusion had been surveyed with a magnetometer prior to the magnetic surveys discussed in this paper.
