The study of chemical reactions of liquid steel and basic open-hearth slag involves a complex slag system of at least eight important components, and often a number of others. In initiating an experimental program on the equilibrium relationship of slag and metal, it became evident that but little progress could be expected in the interpretation of the complex slags until an understanding had been gained of the simpler liquid systems composed of a limited number of slag constituents. The simplest system that in any way resembles open-hearth slag must contain lime, silica and iron oxide. Attempts to produce in an induction furnace slags containing only these constituents have met with serious limitations because of the solubility of refractories in the slag. Thus in acid-lined furnaces the slag is always saturated with silica and consequently contains between 48 and 63 per cent of this component. In basic-lined furnaces an undesired additional component, magnesia, is introduced to the extent of some 3 to 15 per cent, depending upon the acidity, sometimes with disastrous results to the furnace. Thus in a magnesia-lined furnace, Fetters and Chipman1 found it impossible to prepare slags in which the ratio (CaO + MgO)/SiO2 was less than that corresponding to the metasilicate (approximately 0.8:I). Between this composition and that of the true acid slags lies a field of composition about which very little is known and which cannot be explored by any ordinary means. This circumstance, as well as the desire to study the more basic slags in the absence of magnesia, calls for the development of a method by which slags may be brought into equilibrium with molten metal without coming in contact with refractory. Such a technic has been provided by the rotating induction furnace developed by Barrett, Holbrook and Wood.2 Three modifications of the rotating furnace were described by these authors. The first was essentially a rotating refractory cylinder containing the magnesia crucible, which was itself heated by a graphite crucible. In the second, only the magnesia crucible rotated, the cylindrical graphite heater being stationary. In the third, the coil and crucible revolved, and the metal was heated directly by induction. Experimental Method Furnace The furnace used in this investigation differed from previous designs and may be Sci- a fourth modification of the original rotating furnace. During the past decade the genesis of the lead- and zincdeposits of the Mississippi valley has received special attention from many distinguished observers. But their united egorts, instead of settling all disputed questions, have, in many respects, involl-ed the general problem in greater uncertainty than would be thought possible under the circumstances. In place of the harmony of opinion that might be expected, there is unexpected disagreement, largely due to the fact that, instead of giving attention to a possible multiplicity of ore-producing conditions among the different deposits, the attempt has been made to bring all deposits under a single genetic head. To a new observer of the lead- and zinc-deposits of the Mississippi valley, it appears at the outset that all the deposits cannot possibly have had the same genesis. In fact, different modes of origin have been often asserted for the ore-bodies, but the difficulty has been that each writer has referred them either all to one category or all to another, and no intermediate ground has been considered possible. Such a position now appears to be clearly untenable. The opinion that, in the deposits of the region under consideration, the ore-materials represent original depositions, made at the time the rocks themselves were formed, is no longer held by any authority, and therefore need not be considered here. Deposition of manganese oxides is of common occurrence in streams of the north-eastern United States. Manganese entering the stream in solution in ground water is oxidized and deposited in the stream, primarily as oxide coatings on detrital materials. Prevalence and thickness of the coatings increases with increasing particle size in the coarse sand and gravel range. A number of metals of economic and environmental interest are enriched in these coatings. Samples of 8 to 16 mm pebbles were obtained from two streams in the Shawangunk region of southeastern New York State, an area of know71 Pb/Zn/Cu mineralization. The pebbles were leached to remove the oxide coatings and the resulting solutions analyzed for Mn, Fe, Pb, Zn, Cd, Cu, Co, and Ni. Trace-metal/Mn ratios in these streams are generally one to two orders of magnitude higher than regional background values. Profiles of trace- metal/Mn ratios along the streams show considerable detail; contributions of metals from tributaries are sharply reflected in the metal content of the oxides. The potential advantages and disadvantages of using coated stream gravel for geochemical prospecting and environmental studies are discussed in the light of these and other data.

The methodology employed to develop a digital simulation of the Brenda Mines Ltd., Peachland, B. C., secondary crushing plant is described. Methodology includes data acquisition, data adjustment, model building, and the construction of a simulator structure. The simulator was utilized to study the effects of secondary and tertiary crusher close side settings, secondary screen opening, plant feed rate, and percent + 1 in. in the feed on the following responses: percent - 1/2 in. in the final product, plant reduction ratio, circulating load ratio, and screen efficiency. Results are presented in graphical form.

Pebble milling has been practiced in the reduction works of South Africa gold mines for well over 50 years. Originally flint pebbles were imported from Denmark to grind stamp-mill amalgamation- process tailing, which contained a good deal of extractable gold, but local operators soon found that large pieces of ore could be used for the same purpose. The ore is a hard, tough conglomerate in which quartz pebbles are cemented together by a matrix of redeposited silica interspersed with pyrite crystals. The gold, rarely visible, occurs as fine particles mostly segregated at the interface of the pebble and matrix, although a small fraction occurs within the pyrite crystals. There is seldom any gold in the pebbles themselves.

Laboratory-scale intact and jointed rock masses were tested in field and laboratory experiments to investigate tunnel response in high stress environments. In most of the experiments the tunnels were modeled by a rigid-plastic foam polyurethane with a crush strength of 3.4 MPa (500 psi) and emphasis was placed on jointed rock parameters: joint sets (single set of parallel plane joints versus a double set of orthogonal parallel plane joints), joint plane angle with respect to the direct loading direction, and joint spacing. Other parameters were loading stress, loading direction, and tunnel reinforcement strength. Results show quantitatively the increase in tunnel deformation in jointed compared with intact rocks, double versus single joint sets, and large versus small angle between the joint plane normal and the loading direction. A surprising result was the decreases in tunnel deformation with increases in the number of joints across a tunnel diameter. The efficacy of scale modeling with laboratory-constructed rock was tested by modeling complex reinforced concrete and steel tunnel reinforcements in jointed rock masses and comparing the results with large scale tunnels previously fielded in highly jointed granite. Tunnel response was reproduced in surprising detail, including concrete fracture, steel liner bending and fracture, and critical load to produce these responses. The scale models also allowed sectioning of the jointed rock masses to observe gross sliding along the joints that accompanied tunnel failure.

(Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) THE plant and quarries of the Inland Portland Cement Co. are located at Metaline Falls, Wash., about 128 miles north of Spokane, on the Pend Oreille river, and within 10 miles of the Canadian border. The plant is one of a chain of cement plants controlled by the Lehigh Portland Cement Co., of Allentown, Pa. Work on this plant was commenced in June, 1910, and was completed in April, 1911, but on account of some delays in 'the construction of the power plant, the works were not put into operation until August, 1911. Since then it has been in continuous operation and has furnished the Inland Empire with a high grade of cement. Fig. I is a view and Fig. 2 is a plan of the works. Water Power Development.-The source of the water supply for the hydro-electric plant of the Inland Portland Cement Co. is Sullivan lake, a body of water approximately 5.5 miles long and 0.5 mile wide, situated in the Kaniksu Forest Reserve. A wooden crib dam was installed so as to raise the elevation of the lake 25 ft., and the additional storage capacity was taken up by the diversion of Sullivan creek into the lake by means of a wooden flume, 0.25 mile long, 6 by S ft. in cross-section, and a ditch 1,200 ft. long. The water from the lake follows the natural water course to an intermediate storage reservoir, which was created by the construction of an earthen dam. This pond wits used in connection with the saw mill which was installed at this point. Besides the earth dam, there was also built a crib, at the point shown in the sketch map, Fig. 3. This crib dam is 35 ft. high. From this point the excess water follows the natural course of Sullivan creek to the Pend Oreille river.

THE ores now milled at the Midvale concentrator of the United States Smelting, Refining & Mining Co. come mostly from ;the company's mine in the Bingham district, about 18 miles west of Midvale. Custom ores from this same district and from other western mining districts are also milled at times. The Bingham ores consist of galena, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite in a gangue of quartz, quartzite, limestone, and porphyry. The percentage of chalcopyrite is small, usually about 0.5 per cent., while the galena, pyrite, and sphalerite combined constitute about 60 per cent. of the total ore. These three minerals vary considerably' in amount and, at times, all three are somewhat oxidized. The ores also contain gold and silver, the former being mostly in the pyrite while the latter is generally with the galena. The crystallization of the economic minerals varies from fairly coarse to extremely fine. The ores are carried to Midvale by the Bingham & Garfield and the Los Angeles & Salt Lake railroads or by the Denver h Rio Grande Western railroad, in 50-ton, steel, full dump cars. The milling problem is to recover the silver-bearing galena, the gold-bearing pyrite, and the chalcopyrite in a product suitable for the lead smelter and containing the least possible amount of gangue and sphalerite and then recover the sphalerite in a product suitable for a zinc smelter. The minerals are recovered partly by water concentration and partly by water concentration combined with electrostatic treatment.

The final results of the operation of the Cananea test dumps are discussed. Scale-up factors between shake-flask tests, column tests and the large test dumps are established for the Cananea ore. The formation of clay layers, which formed inside the dumps and markedly affected extraction, as well as secondary enrichment, are discussed.

This paper presents a reservoir analyzer study of the performance of the Woodbine formation in the East Texas basin. The study was made possible by the compilation of available information on the configuration. thickness and the pressure drawdown of the formation. The investigation was made of the pressure variations in the basin incident to production from the several Woodbine reservoirs. In addition, the apparent compressibility of Woodbine water was evaluated so that the potential water yield of the formation could be determined. The distribution of permeability of the Woodbine sand and the interference between producing areas were also investigated. In conjunction with this basic study of the Woodbine sand, an acceptable match of the production-pressure relationship in the East Texas Field was established on the analyzer. INTRODUCTION When production is taken from a reservoir contiguous to an aquifer, the resultant pressure gradient causes a water influx into the reservoir. For some years it has been the practice to predict the performance of water drive reservoirs with mathematical equations that relate the water influx into reservoirs to their pressure behavior. A rigorous solution of these equations is quite complex: hence, the conventional method requires the simplifying assumptions that the formation have constant thickness, permeability and poiosity, and that it have a known and regular shape. It is necessary to use performance records of the reservoir in question to determine the equation constants that make the results of the mathematical calculations duplicate the reservoir history. The values of the constants determined in this manner sometimes differ so greatly from theoretical or measured values that the constants appear unreasonable. The equation constants comprise such factors as the thickness, porosity and permeability of the formation, and the viscosity and compressibility of water. Usually the thickness, porosity and viscosity are known within a reasonable degree of certainty. whereas the formation permeability and the water compressibility are known with considerably less certainty. Hence. permeability and compressibility values are arbitrarily selected that will make the mathematical equations duplicate the reservoir behavior. In many reservoir studies the value of the compressibility of water thus selected has exceeded the reported value by a factor of from severalfold to manyfold. Whether this excessive value results from the inadequacy of the mathematical approach to take into account the shape irregularities and the heterogeneities of the aquifer, or is due to some type of formation compaction and decrease of porosity has not been established. Because of the significance of the potential water yield of formations with reference not only to oil reservoirs but to water resources as well, it is very important that a representative value for the effective water compressibility be determined. One of the best known examples of a field for which it has been possible in the past to predict the future reservoir pressure is the East Texas Field. Until about 1943 it was possible by means of mathematical equations to duplicate past pressure behavior and to predict with a high degree of accuracy the reservoir pressure of the field. AT the meeting of the Western Division of the American Mining Congress, held in Denver last September, papers were read by F. H. Brownell, a vice-president of the American Smelting and Refining Co. and chairman of its finance committee, and by H. Foster Bain, former director of the United States Bureau of Mines and now secretary of the A. I. M. E.. which dealt thoroughly with certain phases of my sub-ject. These addresses can hardly have failed to awaken serious reflection in all who listened to them; but their implications have apparently not penetrated the con-sciousness of bankers, economists and statesmen, whose business it is, or should be, to prepare for the economic and social changes which must inevitably follow, if the conclusions which I shall outline hereinafter are true. In discussing this subject I wish to disclaim any intention or desire to forecast the course of the metal markets or the immediate prospects of the mining in-dustry. The facts' adduced must inevitably influence the value of metals, the activity and profitableness of mining, and perhaps also the social status of those en-gaged in it. But my forecasts do not refer to this year, next, year, or the year after. The nearest ap-proach to a date on which I will venture is that the relative scarcity of gold may begin to make itself felt in something like ten years from now, but its effect will not culminate for several years thereafter. Scarcity of new gold is likely to be offset, to some extent, by increasing use of currencies based on credit; but unless it is found possible to dispense with the gold standard altogether, this can hardly prevent a great ultimate fall in commodity prices. This fall, moreover, is likely to be more severe in manufactured goods than in what are, popularly termed raw ma-terials; and most of all in those manufactured goods which are susceptible to the greatest degree to cheapen-ing by mass production, and which are least counter-affected by increasing metal prices; by which I mean those in which the cost of metal contained forms a relatively small, element in the total cost of production.

A SYMPOSIUM on current. conditions in Mexico, particularly in the oil and mining industries, was a most successful feature of the May meeting of the New York Section of the A.I.M.E. Heath Steele, vice-president of The American Metal Co.. Ltd., with an intimate knowledge of Mexico gave the principal address, and asked that his analysis of the present situation he regarded neither as an endorsement of Mexico's policy nor as the criticism of a disgruntled operator. To explain the .attitude of the great mass of the Mexican people towards recent developments, he first described briefly the political, social, and religious beliefs and customs of tile Mexican Indian. In spite of their contact with foreigners these beliefs and customs have remained unchanged throughout many generations. The old communal spirit and the idea of common ownership of the land still persist especially in the rural districts and villages; the old custom of a council for local self-government is reflected in the present-day labor committee. AS these annual occasions in honor of Henry Marion Howe continue through the years: there is progressively less likelihood that the lecturer will have had personal knowledge of Dr. Howe. The present speaker is one of those who unfortunately had no opportunity to come under the inspiring presence of this great metallurgist. A review of Howe's work shows it to cover a comprehensive range of interests and to evidence an impressive richness of detail. Not only was Howe at home in the laboratory, but he was familiar with the processes of iron and steel making and had a real understanding of them. His writings include much that is descriptive of processes with a wealth of material that is becoming of increasing historical value. He recorded his studies of the theoretical aspects of processes and published at least two process classifications, one in 1890 that was lengthy and somewhat theoretical, and a second in 1906 that was more of a practical listing. Wide as Howe's field of interest was, it is significant of the circumstances of his time that he gave- little consideration to raw materials or to their effect on iron and steel making processes. In 1933, Waterhouse, Howe lecturer for that year, presented a descriptive summary of the major steel making processes, and in 1946 Joseph discussed the blast furnace process. Otherwise Howe lectures have not dealt with processes as major subjects. In today's lecture, with no effort to describe the mechanical arrangements of iron and steel making facilities, it is proposed to examine the essential technological elements of the processes, to explore the inter-relation of these elements, and particularly to seek recognition and understanding of those factors which determine why certain processes are or are not used. The discussion of this lecture will deal with the major well-known large tonnage processes, with only such attention to processes of minor tonnage and special character as may be warranted for explanation by contrast. Subject to the errors of generalization and the shortcomings of condensation involved in presentation limited to a single hour, it is proposed to examine broadly but intensively those operations which convert raw materials into steel. It is an innovation for a Howe lecturer to discuss the raw materials of the iron and steel industry, but the changing circumstances of passing years intensify the influence of raw materials on processes and require the metallurgist to be alert for the process adjustments that may become advisable or mandatory. For a half century the metallurgical processing of iron and steel has followed a surprisingly straight path, but this does not necessarily mean that there are no curves in the road ahead. IN his paper entitled, Development of Hindered-Settling Apparatus, Dr. Richards has related the history of the development of the hindered-settling classifier and given illustrations of the several types of this apparatus which lie has designed.1 An earlier paper,2 Close Sizing Before Jigging, shows the nature of the hindered-settling phenomenon and the results which it produces. In the first-mentioned paper Dr. Richards describes the method of getting hindered settling and shows the relation that the constriction bears to the classifier. The question of proper ratios between the area of the sorting column and the area of the constriction opening Dr. Richards leaves open, aside from certain statements as to the ratios which have been found to give good results in practice. While working with a hindered-settling classifier of the type now in use at the Boston & Montana Reduction Plant of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. a number of interesting facts were brought out which have thrown considerable light on the question of proper ratio between the area of the sorting column and the area of the constriction and which will be made the subject of this paper. Free and Hindered Settling. -If a, mineral particle be dropped into a vessel containing still water, the particle will sink in accordance with the laws of free settling in water, which are as follows: 1. Of two grains having the same specific gravity but differing in size, the larger will settle in still water at the greater velocity. 2. Of two grains having the same size but differing in specific gravity, the heavier grain will settle at the greater velocity.

EDWARD ORTON, in his Report on the Occurrence of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Asphalt Rock in Western Kentucky, thus clearly states his ideas of the universal dissemination and rare accumulations of the bitumens:1 " We need to bear in mind that the various members of the bituminous series are abundantly and almost universally distributed among the unaltered sedimentary rocks of the earth's crust. The valuable accumulations of these substances are rare, it is true, but one can scarcely go amiss of petroleum, asphalt or gas, at least in small quantities, among the stratified rocks that retain their original structure." Speaking of the Ohio valley, he adds: "A fifth of one per cent. of petroleum, if distributed through a, thousand feet of rock, would make a total to the acre, or square mile far , beyond any production that has ever been realized from the richest oil field, and percentages of this amount are not only not rare to find, but are even hard to miss." Dr. F. W. Clarke in his Data of Geochemistry (Bulletin No. 491, U. S. Geological Survey, 1911), discussing these views of Orton with similar views of T. Sterry Hunt and Szajnocha, says that they "lead to the conviction that the formation of bitumens is a general process and by no means exceptional. Wherever sediments are laid down, inclosing either animal or vegetable matter, there bitumens may be produced."2 The organic origin of the bitumens, including petroleum, has long been an accepted fact with nearly all geologists, but the method, place, and time of the transformation into petroleum or other bitumen is still under discussion.

Two discrete types of microstructure me seen in cermets formed by the reaction: 4Al (liquid) + 3SiO2 (glass) — 2A12O3(a) + 3Si (solid) Relatively coarse-grained macroscopically isotropic specimens resulted from reaction with aluminum containing appreciable silicon, while macroscopically anisotropic fine-grained specimens were formed by reaction with aluminum low in silicon. Optical microscopy, electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction suggest that the anisotropic material contains gross areas in which submicroscopic grains of a A12O3 are oriented along radial lines drawn from the specimen surface. These lines are presumed to originate at defects in an otherwise protecting surface layer. A unique cermet is formed by the reduction of high-silica glass by molten aluminum according to the reaction: 4A1 (liquid) + 3SiO2 (glass) — 2A12O3 (a) + 3Si (solid) The free-energy change accompanying this reaction is -150 kcal at 800°C; the volume change (volume of A12O3 and silicon minus volume of SiO2) is +6 pct. The reaction product, however, contains aluminum metal as well as Al2O3 and silicon because some of the product silicon is dissolved in the aluminum bath and is replaced by aluminum in the structure. The product is a hard gray solid that retains the external dimensions of the original silica article. The system has been studied in the past, the investigations culminating in patents to George1, 2 and Saw-chuk., The former emphasize that this reaction is but one of a relatively broad class of such systems, while the latter demonstrates that a marked improvement in the gross physical properties of the cermet can be obtained by dissolving appreciable quantities of silicon in the aluminum reactant. The system has also been studied by workers at Rolls Royce Ltd.,4-6 who have patented the addition of small quantities of arsenic, antimony, bismuth, or phosphorus to the reactant bath to SO impede the reaction that glass fibers may be metal-coated by immersion in molten aluminum.

Flow and fracture are admittedly complicated phenomena of which we are yet only partially masters. There is not even nni-.persal agreement as to the details of the language best adapted merely to describe the phenomena, to say nothing of any theory. Certain points of view, however, are widely held, and there are certain general expectations as to what sort of procedures will prove permissible. A complete description of any situation involving fracture would demand a complete history of all the variables in the control of the experimenter. The experimenter endeavors so to choose his independent variables that they are adequate to determine completely the situation in the sense that when an experiment is repeated on the same initial material and with the independent variables running through the same sequence, all the other measurable properties of the system will also run through the same course. It is, I think, the universal conviction that when we are dealing with phenomena of flow and fracture, the most important of the necessary variables are the external forces acting on the various parts of the body; when the force history repeats, with certain obvious restrictions such as that temperature must be constant and non-mechanical forces, such as magnetic field, must be small enough to be ineffective, then the history of all measurable properties will repeat; in particular the alteration of geometrical shape due to flow will run through the same course, and when fracture comes, the character of the fracture will be reproduced. Complete mastery of merely the descriptive aspects of flow and fracture would demand the ability to predict the entire course of flow and complete characterization of the final fracture for every possible combination of forces, varying in time in all possible ways, when applied to bodies of all possible shapes. This full situation is obviously of prohibitive complexity. The first stage in reduction to manageable simplicity is to resolve the total situation into the sum of contributions made by small elements. Our thesis is that if each of the elements is adequately characterized, the behavior of the whole system is fixed. The element is usually taken of a simple geometrical shape, suggested by the mathematics best adapted to the particular situation. The forces acting across the faces of the elements are ultimately determined by the forces acting across the free faces of the whole system. The detailed process of finding the precise forces on the faces of all the elements in terms of the external forces involves the use of a special mathematical invention, the stress, a constructional quantity consisting of six components. The stress at any point in the body is determined by both the external force system and by the physical properties of the body at all points; quite different stresses prevail at the interior of bodies of the same shape under the same external forces in the elastic and plastic ranges.
