Recent work on borate deposits near Kramer in the extreme southeast corner of Kern County, California, is of special interest because of the information it seems to give concerning the mode of origin of the borate minerals colemanite and ulexite, especially when considered in conjunction with the valuable clue to the mode of origin of colemanite in its present known deposits given in a paper by W. F. Foshag,1 of the United States National Museum. Colemanite is found in or near original deposits of ulexite, from which it is supposed to have been derived by a change in the character of the ground water or rate of its movement or both. Indications that an alteration of this sort had produced colemanite were first recognized by the writer2 in specimens collected in the Kramer district in 1920, and sent to W. T. Schaller, at U. S. Geological Survey, for identification. The identity of the two borate minerals in these specimens was suspected when collected but not at once determined, but the relations of the minerals as seen in the specimens seemed to afford a manifest clue to the origin of the deposits. Similar specimens were obtained by the writer from deposits in Death Valley soon after he had examined the deposits near Kramer. After studying the specimens submitted to him Dr. Schaller wrote as follows: " I have finally positively identified the boron minerals you sent me with your letter of Sept. 27. The 'white fibrous mineral like ulexite, is ulexite; the 'harder nodules' in the clay are colemanite, apparently formed from the ulexite as a result of leaching, with recrystallization in place—a theory that Foshag is working on." The present paper is a report on the facts observed at the depo its near Kramer, and some general observations on the geological relations noted, which, unfortunately, still form only a very incomplete record. Most technical and statistical data published on pyrophyllite relating to production figures, uses, markets and sales, have in the past traditionally linked the mineral with talc and soapstone. This is due to several common superficial physical properties resulting in substitute uses and applications. However, these minerals are not similar in chemical composition and do not generally occur in a similar geological environment. Pyrophyllite now stands on its own in the marketplace-particularly in ceramic applications-due to the combination of excellent heat shock and creep resistance properties of the mineral. The increase in pyrophyllite use in the field of ceramics indicates the continuing realization of these marked unique properties. Several new fields of ceramic applications, previously the preserve of high-alumina materials, have been developed on the intrinsic properties of pyrophyllite. Pyrophyllite is an aluminum silicate with the molecular formula of AI2O34SiO2H2O. It would be more appropriate to group pyrophyllite with such materials as kyanite, diaspore, andalusite, and certain high-alumina clays in relation to its general applications (Stuckey, 1928). These materials all have good beat shock resistance properties at high temperatures and are widely used for the manufacture of refractories. For those reasons they are interchangeable in some applications. Pyrophyllite also has many uses in nonceramic applications, the most important to date being as a substitute for talc in fillers. The major pyrophyllite mining operations are located in the US, Japan, Korea, Canada, and Australia, where the mineral is widely used as a raw material for general ceramic, mineral filler, and dilutant applications. Commercial Applications Pyrophyllite was first used in the last century for lining stoves and fireplaces, and also in the carving and polishing of ornamental objects. The rise in industrial demand for new products and applications resulted in the introduction of pyrophyllite as an alternative, mainly for talc and soapstone. Industrial filler applications followed for paint, paper, cosmetics, rubber, pesticides, crayons and pencils, and bleaching soap. The first use of pyrophyllite in ceramic applications was prior to World War II, in the manufacture of ceramic cladding tiles in the US. This was followed by the production of kiln furniture refractories and whiteware when pyrophyllite was offered by suppliers in North Carolina as an alternative to some local clays. The largest tonnages of pyrophyllite used today are in refractory linings in steel ladles in Japan, as seen in Table 1. The consumption of pyrophyllite in Japan is second only to clay and chamotte among refractory raw materials used. Recently this technology has been adopted in Australia. Japanese and Australian practice has resulted in appreciable technical and economic benefits, particularly when pyrophyllite is used in combination with zircon. The potential growth for this application is substantial if US and European steelmakers follow. Investigation and research into the properties of pyrophyllite determined the following main advantages of pyrophyllite-based ceramics: high corrosion resistance for molten iron, steel, and slags; good heat shock resistance; good indices of deformation under load and hot creep resistance (refractories); and increase in mechanical strength of whiteware products promoted by a better distribution of mullite in finished products (also obtained at lower firing temperatures than normally required in production of triaxial ceramics). The basic operating properties of the DorrClone are discussed and certain metallurgical applications which exploit these properties are presented. An effective method of controlling the consistency of the DorrClone underflow is described. THIS paper presents in a general manner some of the applications of the DorrClone (Dutch States Mines cyclone) in the metallurgical and heavy chemical fields. Technical or mathematical analyses of the design factors and of the mechanism whereby the cyclone effects its separation have been capably treated in a series of previous papers.'-' Engineering and operational aspects of a few installations and laboratory tests have been chosen to emphasize the unique classification characteristics of the DorrClone and to illustrate its utility in certain difficult situations. Its use in coal washing and heavy-media operations are not considered. Some 25 or more industrial installations and applications of the DorrClone in the metallurgical fields are operating at present, ranging from single trial units to complete batteries composed of a multiplicity of units. The data were obtained in part from some of these, and in part from operations of units at the Westport Mill, the laboratories and testing plant of the Dorr Co. at Westport, Conn. The DorrClone was developed, in principle, by the research dept. of the State Mines, Limburg, Holland, during World War 11. Its first use was to dewater a —50 micron sand used as a dense medium in coal washing. The metallurgical wet cyclone was first publicized by Driessen and Yancey and Geer.6 ince then the cyclone has been studied as a means of de-watering, heavy media concentration, and fine size classification. The DorrClone is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. pulp to be treated is pumped through the feed nozzle, A, into the feed cylinder, B. The feed nozzle is of rectangular cross-section, the outermost edge being tangent to the feed cylinder walls. Feed shims, C, may be attached to the innermost walls to adjust the open area of the feed nozzle available to entering pulp. The tangential injection of feed under pressure supports the vortex action of the pulp that has been detained in the cyclone; the centrifugal forces of this vortex throw the coarse particles to the walls of the cone, D, where they collect and pass downward and out through the adjustable apex opening, E. The fine particles contained in most of the water that entered with the feed pulp move to the inner spiral of the vortex and flow out through the vortex finder, F, contained in the orifice plate, G, which forms the top of cyclone chamber. The overflow pulp may then spray freely into a spray chamber, H, surmounting the cyclone or pass directly into a 90' elbow, I, of somewhat larger diameter than the vortex finder. Installation Where more than one cyclone is to be installed, best overall efficiency and ease of control are obtained with equal distribution of both pulp volume and weight of solids among the cyclones, and with the same pressure being maintained at each cyclone feed nozzle. Fig. 3 is a suggested arrangement for feeding two or more cyclones in parallel. Feed pressure control: Under normal operating conditions it is not unusual for some surge to exist in the feed that is to be sent to the cyclone. As will be discussed later, surges in the solids content of the pulp are usually not of great operational consequence, but surges in feed volume are a problem. Several systems have been devised for absorbing surges in feed volume, each involving a surge tank. If the surges are small and fairly rhythmical, a tank of sufficient size might be installed to dampen out

From the observation of platinum wire marker movement in the oxidation of columbium at high lemperatures and low oxygen pressures, predonzinant cation diffusion in CbO, has been demonstrated. The Cu,0 molecule was used as an oxidizing species to study the nature of the porous scale and the location of the reduction site in the oxidation of colum-bium. The Cb205 scale contains microporosity and forms by alternate ionic diffusional growth and fracture. The oxidation of columbium at high temperatures and very low po, results in a relatively compact and protective Cb205 layer. THE observation of marker movements during oxidation is one means for the identification of the mobile ionic species in an oxide lattice. Previous marker experiments in the oxidation of columbium have all resulted in the markers being found on the outside surface of the Cbz05 scale. The Cr203 powder markers of Klopp et a1.,' the gold film marker of Kofstad and ~jijllesdal,' and the platinum wire marker of Cathcart et a1 .3 were found at the oxide/gas interface for oxidation temperatures ranging from 450" to 120O0C. However, in all experiments relatively high oxygen pressures were used. As discussed by Mrowec, even the interpretation of marker experiments in simple scales containing only one compound is not without ambiguities. In brief, it can be said that a marker may be found almost anywhere in the scale layer if the metal oxidizes by cation diffusion through the scale; the position of the marker depends upon morphological happenings in the scale. When considering marker movement in a polyphase scale one must proceed with extreme caution. For example, in the past (and present) work markers have never been found at the columbium-scale interface, and one might infer that the oxygen ion is mobile in CbO and CbO,. However, only trace quantities of CbO and CbOz have been present on any of the specimens, so no firm statement is justified on this basis. Despite previous experimental work, considerable doubt still exists concerning the role of the oxides CbO and CbOz in the oxidation of columbium. The identification of the mobile ionic species in CbO and CbOz from the observation of platinum wire markers was one goal of the present investigation . The linear kinetics of columbium oxidation at high temperatures (T - 1000°C) suggests that the Cbz05 scales which form on columbium are porous. From mercury absorption measurements on a Cbz05 scale formed at 500"C, Aylmore et al.' reported a minimum volume fraction of connected voids equal to 0.15. While these scales often appear to be quite porous when viewed in metallographic cross section, they are so brittle that metallographic preparation is likely to exaggerate any porosity originally present. In this investigation, porosity developed during the oxidation of pure columbium and present at the high temperature was detected by oxidizing specimens in sealed evacuated capsules containing large compacts of mixed copper and CuzO powders. wooda has demonstrated that the CuzO, or (CuzO),, molecule is volatile and that oxygen is transferred by the CuzO molecule from a Cu/CuzO mixture to materials having a greater affinity for oxygen. For each molecule of CuzO that is reduced at a sink for oxygen, two atoms of copper are deposited. Quantitatively, essentially all of the oxidation carried out by a Cu-Cu20 compact results from a displacement reaction involving the CuzO molecule. When a metal which oxidizes to form a porous scale is exposed to the CuzO vapor, the CUZO molecules are reduced in the pores leaving a deposit of metallic copper to mark the site of the reduction. This technique has the rather unique advantage that any copper-coated pores found in the scale are unambiguously related to the reduction site in the growth of the scale under consideration. Pores or cracks which form in a msition*- external to the reduction site or which occur as a result of cooling or handling of the specimen will not exhibit the copper deposit. Broadly speaking, fluxes are substances which promote wetting and spreading or enhance the fluidity and manipulative properties of materials in joining, fusion, and smelting operations. The term most strictly applies to substances used to facilitate soldering and brazing; but in the discussion which follows, the definition will be broadened to include materials used to promote fusion in arc welding and which aid in the smelting of metals. In each of the mentioned applications, the role of flux and its composition differs considerably; consequently in the discussion which follows, fluxes for soldering, brazing, arc welding, and smelting applications will be considered separately. Soldering and Brazing Fluxes Soldering and brazing are metallurgical joining processes in which a joint is formed using a filler metal of composition dissimilar to that of the joined pieces (base metal). The filler metal, solder or braze, is always of lower melting point than the base metal. Consequently with these processes there is no melting of the base metal. The successful creation of the joint depends upon the wetting and spreading of the solder or braze around or throughout the joint. The obstacles to successful soldering and brazing are contaminants and tenacious oxide films on the metal surfaces. In soldering and brazing applications, fluxes act to remove and exclude oxides and other impurities from the joint. There is no fundamental difference between soldering and brazing. The distinction between them is made on the basis of temperature. Join¬ing operations carried out at temperatures above 500° C are termed brazing. The higher temperatures used in brazing enable higher melting point filler metals to be used which generally provide stronger joints. The higher temperatures of brazing processes also require fluxes which are substantially different from those used in soldering and which will remain effective at high temperatures. Consequently the distinction between soldering and brazing can also be made on the basis of the fluxes used. Soldering Fluxes Even thoroughly cleaned and degreased, metal surfaces still possess tenacious oxide films which inhibit the soldering of the joint. The reactions which form these films increase with increasing temperature. The rate of oxide formation and the tenacity of the film varies with each base metal. Aluminum, magnesium, stainless and high alloy steels, aluminum and silicon bronzes when exposed to air form hard, adherent oxide films. These metals require highly active and corrosive fluxes to remove and prevent the reformation of oxide films during soldering. Metals such as copper and silver, on the contrary, form less tenacious films at a lower rate, so that mild fluxes are sufficient. Soldering fluxes must dissolve or remove oxides and promote rapid wetting and spreading of the solder. The flux removes the oxide film by loosening and floating it off into the main body of the flux. The oxide removal is often aided by the alloying of the solder with the base metal, undermining small areas of the oxide and detaching them (Anon., 1959). The flux coagulates and suspends the oxide particles which have been loosened. The flux forms a protective cover preventing the reformation of the oxides, permitting the spreading of the solder and the formation of a metallic bond between the solder and the base metal. Constituents of Soldering Fluxes: Soldering fluxes are commonly grouped into three categories: highly corrosive, intermediate, and noncorrosive. One normally would choose to use the least corrosive flux which will give satisfactory performance.

MARCH 31, 1922, undoubtedly will be long remembered as the ending of an important epoch in the coal-mining industry. On that date, contracts fixing the wages and terms of employ-ment at all anthracite mines and at approximately 60 per cent. of the bituminous mines of the country expired. For the past two years, the consuming public has been complaining bitterly against continued high cost of coal. Coal operators employing union labor have felt obligated to carry out contracts entered -into under the direction of the Bituminous Wage Commission appointed by President Wilson, and in order to do this, they have sacrificed millions of tons of business to non-union mines, and millions of dollars in wages that would have been distributed throughout unionized districts have been diverted to the non-union miners, many of whom never obtained the peak wages granted by the Bituminous Commission and others of whom accepted reductions early in 1921. Heretofore, wage contracts have overlapped as to expiration dates in different districts and renewals have had to take into consideration the competitive balance; the present situation is unique in that practi-cally every contract in the country expired on March 31, and the questions now confronting those responsible for the operation. of the coal mines of the country are: 1. Shall the operators that have heretofore employed union labor endeavor to continue contractual relations with United Mine Workers of America? 2. Shall they undertake to operate their mines with non-union labor? 3. Shall they encourage and endeavor to work out some plan of regulation or arbitration by a Government commission such as President Roosevelt appointed to settle the anthracite strike in 1902? 4. Shall the country give consideration to the demand of the miners that the coal-mining industry be "nationalized?"

There is reason to believe that ventilation systems so far devised for use with continuous mining machines fall far short of success. This is vividly demonstrated to anyone who has observed in a continuous miner section the localized ignitions of pockets of gas and the generation of dense clouds of dust by the cutting head of the machine. The alarming frequency with which major ignitions and disasters continue to occur in modern mechanical mining and the rise in incidence of pneumoconiosis serve as reminders that our ventilation systems are far from achieving the ultimate in providing protection from either short-term explosions or long- term dust diseases, both of which take lives. Human safety is the main concern in ventilation. But in this day of high-priced labor, let us not forget human comfort, either, for this is a major factor in motivation toward high productivity. The failure or inadequacy of most mine ventilation systems in providing the kind of working conditions at the face that are conducive to productive as well as safe operation is an indictment of our environ- mental control program in mining generally.

The development of the mining industry in Sardinia dates from the application of the mining law of 1859, which, following the example of the French mining law of 1810, declared prospecting to be free, and suppressed the liens which had previously attached the mine to surface ownership. The first ore-dressing plants were installed by German engineers upon the classic models of the Harz and of Freiberg; but in 1880 Sardinia commenced to open a new path in that industry, utilizing the refuse from the mining of rich, selected minerals, of poor deposits, and of mixed ores. The first experiments were attempte to adapt the existing apparatus to local conditions, but progress was rapid, as was demonstrated already in 1887 by the calamine-dressing mill of Monte-poni, which exhibited a large plant designed in accordance with the experience gained, and constructed entirely in the machine-shops of the country, after new models and designs.' This example was followed two years later by the Sociékté Malfidano, with a large plant of the same sort, and with the reconstruction of the old-fashioned dressing-mill, built in 1880 by the Austro-Belgian Company. In 1900, almost all the mines of Sardinia had adopted the new designs, and the island contained 32 concen-trating-works, employing 2,000 h.p. and 1,924 workmen. Since that time, there have been added a large dressing-mill for blende at Gennamari, and two for calamine, at San Giovanni and at Masua, while the establishments at other mines have been enlarged and perfected. The influence of cobalt and nickel on the properties of steel might be readily expected to be very similar. The two elements occupy close and somewhat unusual positions in the periodic table, their chemical behavior and compounds are so completely analogous and their various physical properties, including the ferro-magnetic characteristic, show such 3 remarkable correspondence, that there is no doubt of a strong resemblance existing between these two metals. However, the variety of properties that are obtained from steel is due largely to the fact that the element iron possesses allotropic forms. Alloying elements that affect these allot ropic forms, or alter the nature of the allotropic changes, exert a profound influence on the resulting steel. In the case of nickel and cobalt, although these elements are very similar chemically and physically, it is found that they differ distinctly in their individual effects on the critical points of iron. Both nickel and cobalt form a series of homogeneous solid solutions with iron at temperatures above 1500" F. The difference in their behavior does not occur until changes begin to take place in the solid state below this temperature. An inspection of the respective thermal equilibrium diagrams at the lower temperatures makes the opposite effects of nickel and cobalt clearly evident. Effect of Nickel and Cobalt in Binary Alloys with Iron The binary diagram of iron-nickel has been investigated by a number of workers. The lower temperature portion in Fig. 1 is reconstructed from the data of D. and H, Hanson.1 The diagram of iron-cobalt, shown in Fig. 2, is taken from the work of Ruer and Kaneko.2 Masumoto3 has recently discovered a lower critical point in cobalt and this has been added to the diagram. In both diagrams the space lattice structures as determined by Andrews4 have been included. It is interesting to note

Metallurgical changes in SAE 52100 ball-bearing components resulting from overload testing are described. Changes in microstructure, hardness, and resiclctal stresses crre discussed zuitlz re.ference to material cleanliness obtained by various steel-melting practices and are compared with work by otlzer investigators. Evidence is presented to show that the initialion and development of microstruc-tural alterations are characterized by two separate reactions: the appeavance of a "dark etchingJ' constituent, and "gray lines" or a light etclzing constituent. The dependency of these tzvo reactions on material cleunliness, running tirne, and contact stresses is discussed and a failure mode related to material cleanliness and microstructural transformation is proposed. THE study of ball- and roller-bearing contact fatigue has been paced by a strong emphasis on bears ing application performance. Particular attention has been paid to conditions that effect the spalling-type failure that is characteristic of rolling contact fatigue in through-hardened components. Some of the conditions investigated are lubrication and atmosphere,1-3 material characteristics and finish,475 and speed and design fa~tors."~ A typical spalling-type failure is shown in Fig. 1. The arrow shows the motion of the ball relative to the inner-ring race surface. The leading edge of the spall is usually sharper than the trailing edge. The race surface near the trailing edge also shows small dents caused by debris from the spall. In this type of testing very little metallurgical investigation is done on failed bearings. Emphasis is placed on test conditions and statistical analyses of endurance data. More basic work has been done relating micro-structural changes to fatigue performance. Dyer" and Wood, Cousland, and sargant9 have used mostly simple materials, such as single crystals and single-phase polycrystalline specimens, under simple alternating strain to identify a systematic process of fatigue damage. drutowski" was concerned primarily with the relationship between steel structure, contact stress, and energy losses in rolling contact. dones11 and Bush, Grube, and Robinson12 utilized changes in microstructure and residual stress in overload-tested rolling contact elements as a means of investigating the fatigue process. Work is being done on an ASME-sponsored contract,13 using both simple and complex materials, but there is still a long way to go before such theories as pore and void growth in simple structures can be applied to the relatively complex bearing steel microstructure. The purpose of this paper is to report on an investigation into the effect of steel cleanliness on the structural alteration and residual stress changes found in overload-tested ball bearings. Using these results and those of previous investigators, we will propose probable failure mechanisms in both overload- and normal load-tested ball bearings.14,15 PROCEDURE Ball bearings? 3208 size, were fabricated from SAE 52100 steel obtained by five different melting practices. The melting practices, chemistry, and inclusion ratings for the five lots of steel are summarized in Tables I and 11. The nonmetallic inclusion ratings were determined by the Jernkontoret method described in ASTM E45-51 Method A. This technique consists of microscopically examining a series of polished samples taken from specified locations in the ingots, billets, or bars. Each sample is surveyed at XlOO magnification and the inclusion types and sizes are compared to standard fields. Trends will continue towards more automated, and sometimes larger mining and haulage equipment to reduce pit development and haulage costs. To save labour costs, larger capitalization of open pits is required and pit design and stripping ratios have to be firmed up at a very early stage of mine planning. Bench failures will assume a greater importance with larger equipment and at present we have only a limited capability of predicting stable slopes in complex structural geological settings. Deep open pits will pose particular problems in regard to high toe and floor stresses. This will require the development of more efficient systems for rock mass exploration and an improvement of our predictive capability in regard to pit slope stability and appropriate management of ground- water and materials. To meet the challenge, we have to improve: a) Analytical tools to assess slope stability in structurally complex settings as found in large open pits; b) Core orientation methods during diamond drilling operations; c) Geophysical logging methods to obtain geotechnical and structural geological information for large volumes of rock; and d) Geotechnical data handling systems to define mechanical properties

Western Australia (often popularly called Westralia) comprises all of the Australian continent west of the 129th meridian. The latest census, that of 1895, gives it a population of 101,235 persons. It includes within its bouiidaries 975,920 square miles. About half the colony lies within the tropics. The climate varies but slightly, considering the vastuess of' the area. The interior is dry and hot, and subject to very sudden changes. The coasts are warm, and the rainfall abundant, varying from 20 to 40 inches per annum. Perth is the capital and principal town, having a population of 20,000. Fremantle (pop. 9000), distant 12 miles, is the port of Perth, but because it is out of the track of the mail steamers, the mail and passengers are landed at Albany (pop. 3000) on St. George's Sound. A railroad, 338 miles long, connects Pert11 with Albany, and the running time of trains is about fifteen hours. Kalgoorlie is only about 200 miles from the coast at the little village of Esperance; but to reach Kalgoorlie one must land at Albany, travel to Northam, within 66 miles of Perth, and then east at an acute angle 325 miles to Kalgoorlie; in all about 600 miles. From Perth a railroad also runs to the Murchison gold-fields by way of Mingenew, Mnllewa and Yalgoo, to Cue. A branch goes down to the port of Geraldton. The government operates all the railroads and telegraph lines, and has been very energetic, all things considered, in extending them into the gold-fields. As to the accommodations afforded by the railroads, the less said the better. The comforts of travel are conspicuous by their absence. Of the 975,920 square miles of Westralia, the government, in its magnificent way, cleclares 256,060 to be gold-bearing. THIS is the second in a trilogy of investigations carried out in order to understand the solid state transformations and their accompanying effects on the deformation behavior of near-equiatomic Ni-Ti alloys. The first stage of this effort has dealt with the strictly martensitic structures obtainable in these alloys, i.e., those in which diffusion processes were not involved.1,2 These martensites could be produced either by rapid quenching or by plastic deformation of the originally B2 type phase. The present investigation, on the other hand, will deal with those transformations in Ni-Ti which do involve diffusion. A majority of investigators3-10 have shown that the B2 modification of TiNi, which is stable at elevated temperatures, decomposes into one or both of the intermetallic compounds NiTi2 and Ni3Ti below about 650°C. On the other hand, this has been disputed by several Workers was undertaken in order to resolve this discrepancy, as well as to shed more light on the nonmar-tensitic decomposition of B2 NiTi. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Sample preparation, fabrication, and examination were the same as those described previously in Ref. 2. In addition to the 50 at. pct Ni (55.06 wt pct) hypoeu-tectoid alloy used previously, a second hypereutectoid alloy containing 54.4 at. pct Ni (60 wt pct) was also prepared for this study. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The equilibrium diagram for the Ni-Ti alloy system in the vicinity of Ni-Ti is shown in Fig. 1. The solid lines have been established by the work of Poole and ~ume-Ftothery4 whereas the dotted lines are based on findings obtained in the present investigation as described below. Structure and Morphology. Fig. 2(a) shows a bright field transmission electron micrograph of a two-phase structure obtained in a polycrystalline Ni-Ti alloy that was furnace cooled (approx 200°C per hr) from 1050' to about 300°C. Large plate-shaped precipitates can be observed in a matrix which was found by electron diffraction to possess the high temperature B2 structure. A selected area diffraction pattern of the region covered by Fig. 2(a) is shown in Fig. 2(b), while Fig. 2(c) is a detailed schematic interpretation of Fig. 2(b). The B2 matrix reflections are illustrated by squares while those of the precipitate are shown as circles. The d values associated with the precipitate reflections could be determined quite accurately since the reflections from the B2 matrix, for which the lattice constant is known precisely, were simultaneously present in the diffraction patterns. PLATINUM and palladium are the most generally useful, most ductile and least rare members of the platinum family. They have many impor-tant applications in the pure state but for other applications it is fre-quently desirable to harden them and otherwise modify their properties by alloying small amounts of the other platinum group metals with them. These alloys are frequently required to withstand very drastic forming operations and to possess certain mechanical properties to fulfill specific requirements. For these reasons a knowledge of the tensile properties and annealing characteristics of pure platinum and palladium as well as their more useful commercial alloys is important to the user, and the fabricator. The present work was undertaken to fill this need. Rather brief (5 min.) annealing treatments were employed to render the data of maximum practical value and all tests were conducted upon 0.050-in. dia. wire, initially reduced 50 per cent in area by cold drawing, for the same reason. CONCLUSIONS 1. Pure (thermocouple grade) platinum reduced 50 per cent by cold drawing exhibits the following tensile properties: ultimate tensile strength, 36,000 lb. per sq. in.; proportional limit, 27,000 lb. per sq. in.; elongation, 2.5 per cent in 2 in.; reduction in area, 95 per cent. When fully annealed by treatment at 1100°C. its properties are: ultimate tensile strength, 20,700 lb. per sq. in.; elongation, 30 per cent in 2 in.; reduction in area, 93 per cent.

A survey of the status of ore dressing in 19231 placed particular stress on the need of research in the crushing and grinding of ore, especially on the need for a method of measuring the surface of the products obtained in crushing and grinding and for fundamental data on the law of crushing, in order that intelligent conclusions may be drawn from actual crushing or grinding experiments. There has been no satisfactory means of determining the surface of crushed products. The results have been judged entirely by the amount of the various sizes produced, based on sieve sizing for particles above 74 microns in size and on microscopic measurement or elutriation for particles below 74 microns, a method which could give only a general idea of what had been accomplished. The fact that the long controversy between the followers of Kick and of Rittinger has resulted in no accepted conclusion is evidence of the need for fundamental data on the crushing law. Some Methods of Measuring Surface of Particles A dissolution method was used by Wolff to measure surfaces of glass powder. A mixture of sodium carbonate and sodium hydroxide was the solvent and the amount of glass dissolved in two hours from the powder was compared with that dissolved from a glass plate.2 Lately Herbert F. Kriege has used the dissolution method in determining surface of calcite and limestone.3 Dr. Geoffrey Martin and his coworkers in England have also used a dissolution method to determine surface on quartz. In a previous paper,' the results of some experimental work on the measurement of slippage in the flow of oil and gas mixtures through vertical pipes were presented. The data obtained were correlated and equations were deduced from which the performance of the experimental gas-lift could be predicted with reasonable accuracy. However, attempts to apply the equations to the calculation of pressure drops in actual flowing wells yielded erroneous results. At the time the results of the experimental work were published, no satisfactory explanation could be offered for the failure of the empirical equations to express properly the performance of wells. However, recent work has led to the development of a new hypothesis which presupposes certain conditions affecting the flow of oil and gas in wells. When the proposed equations are corrected to allow for these conditions, an agreement between the observed and calculated performance of the actual wells is obtained which in most cases is quite satisfactory, although it is subject to certain limitations. In this paper, the method of calculating the pressure drop in actual wells is considered, and the application of the method to the design of tubing is discussed. (For nomenclature used in this discussion, see Table 1.) Factors Affecting Slippage and Efficiency At the outset, a few of the principle factors affecting slippage and efficiency in the gas-lift discussed in the previous paper will be reviewed. In the flow of the mixture of oil and gas in a vertical pipe, slippage is the phenomenon of gas moving upward with a. linear velocity greater than that of the oil. Under steady conditions, if given quantities of oil and gas enter the tubing per unit of time, the same quantities of oil and gas per unit time must, on the average, pass every section of the tubing; otherwise, there would be accumulation or depletion of the oil or gas at some sections, and the flow would be unsteady. THE following presentation of the more important accumulated facts and probabilities involved in copper ore deposition is based on my experience in examination work and study of the extensive litera-ture of the subject; to make personal mention of all sources of information would require the naming of a small army of able geologists and other investigators who have contributed to, building up the science. I have tried to present the salient features of the subject in logical order and condensed form, and to point out the relative importance of processes involved. Doubt-less many geologists could suggest some changes and many additions. ORIGINAL SOURCE The original source of all copper was in the earth's interior; it has been brought to the outer part of the earth, within reach of man, in three ways: (1) By intrusions and flows of basic igneous rocks containing copper in minute quantities, presumably as silicate or sulfide. No orebodies have been formed by this method. (2) As segregations within intrusive igneous rocks, the copper minerals having solidified at the same time as the rock itself. The few deposits known to have been formed in this manner have been of little or no importance. The oft quoted Sudbury nickel-copper deposits are now known to belong to the class following. (3) By gaseous or liquid aqueous emanations from ,large deep-seated masses of intrusive molten rock. These emanations, or mineral solutions, ascended through zones of connected openings in the earth's crust and dropped their load at points far above their source. Deposits formed in this manner were the primary source of nearly all, if not all, of the world's copper production.
