Characterisation of Manganese Ores

This paper is intended to give a general review of current gold extraction technology for free-milling or non-refractory auriferous ores. Fundamental process concepts and some of the differences between the current technologies is referred to. Typical flowsheets and layouts are provided and it is demonstrated that technology for extracting free-milling gold is relatively simple. For environmentally sensitive areas such as encountered in New Zealand relevant cyanide decay and destruction technology is also discussed. Brief mention is made of some likely future innovations. Finally reference is made of New Zealand's previous significant contribution to gold extraction technology. These contributions were pioneering ranging from the cyanide leaching of gold to adsorption by carbon and precipitation by zinc. New Zealand has not allowed its potential gold projects to develop at a rate commensurate with the rest of the world thereby stifling its renowned innovative approach in this technology. It is time for New Zealand mining to recognise its unique opportunities in developing gold extraction technology and again take a rightful place in leading the way.

A new lead refinery with a capacity of 230,000 tons per year commenced operation at Port Pirie in October, 1959. This plant superseded the refinery which had operated from 1933 with the advent of the continuous lead refining process. The incorporation of new equipment following local metallurgical developments, together with the overseas demand for lead of extremely low antimony content createddifficulties in operating the original plant. The new refinery project was undertaken to cover this disability and to gain the full advantage of the new processes.Desilverising and softening are carried out in units identical in size to those used previously. Metallic zinc is recovered from the entire output of desilverised bullion by vacuum distillation. Final refining is carried out by batch treatment with caustic soda yielding lead of purity previously unattainable at Port Pirie.These two processes replace continuous dezincing by oxidation, a high temperature process which caused large quantities of lead and antimony to be recirculated. The final stage is a batch process; therefore the product composition can be checked before casting. Individual batches can be adjusted to produce special alloys to consumer's specification.Improved casting equipment allows the quantity production of pigs of good physical characteristics either as 56 lb bars or 2000 lb pigs.This, together with the high purity of the lead, assures the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd. (RH.A.S.) position in world markets.Automatic control systems are extensively employed, particularly on the vacuum dezincing unit.The anticipated financial benefits have been achieved mainly by a reduction in the tonnage of recirculated materials, a smaller labour force, and reduced maintenance requirements.INTRODUCTIONIn December 1956 a decision was made to build at Port Pirie a lead refinery on a completely new site, and in October 1959 the new refinery was brought into operation. This paper describes new research and development currently being undertaken by the CSIRO Mining Technology Group to advance the automation capability of continuous mining equipment in underground coal mining operations. The effort aims at increasing the overall rate of roadway development as well as providing a safer working environment for underground mine personnel. The activity is funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) and forms part of a larger underground development initiative, known as the CM2010 project. The CM2010 is managed via a consortium of leading mining industry representatives through the Roadway Development Task Group (RDTG). The Task Group has identified three research areas requiring new development in order to realise the CM2010 project objectives: self-guiding (autonomous) continuous miner capability, an enhanced drilling and bolting process and improved mesh deployment. CSIRO's primary role in the CM2010 project is in the development of the autonomous continuous miner guidance capability.This paper reports on outcomes achieved at the half-way mark of a three year research and development project. It details the technical developments undertaken towards demonstration of a 'self-steering' capability to enable a continuous miner to automatically maintain a given mining heading and mining horizon under production conditions. A primary technical requirement of this automated functionality is the means to accurately determine both the location and orientation of the continuous miner in real-time. Testing and validation of the guidance system solution has been implemented using a combination of an instrumentation-grade inertial navigation unit and radar technology. Comprehensive performance evaluations have been conducted using a scale skid-steer mobility platform known as the Phoenix. Results achieved to the present stage of the project are highly promising and suggest that an automated self-steering functionality is achievable under production conditions. This new outcome represents an important move towards implementing a step change improvement for future underground roadway development.

Quartz, adularia and clay minerals from low-sulfidation epithermal veins at Hishikari were analyzed for their oxygen and hydrogen stable isotope compositions to establish the source of paleohydrothermal waters. Positive correlation between Au-Ag and adularia: quartz ratio, the presence of quartz pseudomorphs of bladed calcite, and Au-bearing smectite and vermiculite is indicative, but not definitive, evidence for the control of boiling on ore mineralization. Oxygen isotope equilibrium temperatures between quartz and adularia are about 220¦C and average homogenization temperatures of fluid inclusions vary between 190 to 210¦C. The calculated d18OH2O and dDH2O values (from quartz, adularia and early smectite) are consistent with paleohydrothermal fluids that were a mixture of magmatic and meteoric waters, or alternatively, the values could derive from heated meteoric water which had undergone isotope exchange during circulation through basement rock. Overall, d18Oqtz values in veins increase toward the north, most likely reflecting palaeo-fluid flow (source).

A new minerals initiative to increase the level of understanding of New Zealand's mineral resources and to promote the development of minerals began earlier in the year in a partnership pilot-project between Crown Minerals and the Institute for Geological and Nuclear Sciences (GNS). The project aims to gather a set of comprehensive geoscientific data and build a series of digital GIS packages to highlight New Zealand's mineral prospectivity. The pilot study was carried out at a regional scale, and is focussed on mesothermal gold mineralisation in the South Island. A significant amount of geological data and information was sourced from open file technical reports held by Crown Minerals and from various databases held by GNS and has now been compiled into a single GIS dataset, which will soon be made freely available to interested parties. In addition to this comprehensive data compilation, prospectivity modelling using Weights of Evidence techniques was undertaken to highlight those areas likely to contain ore deposits. It is clear from this study that the South Island of New Zealand remains highly prospective for mesothermal gold mineralisation. Many of the highly prospective areas, which also contain historic mine workings, remain open for exploration. The study not only highlights these areas, but also other areas where the potential for similar mineralisation exists, in all likelihood with no surface expression. The study has also highlighted the value of many of the open-file technical reports held by Crown Minerals and the need to carry out additional studies using this and other available data at a more detailed level, possibly as the basis for a web-based minerals information system.

When the HSE Act was introduced in New Zealand in April 1993, one of the prime aims of the Government was to signal to the industry. The Government's recognition of the employer as the key person responsible for safety and health in the workplace and to actively encourage employers to self manage the health and safety function. Because of the significant change in the philosophy behind the new legislation, and because of the inherently conservative nature of the mining industry, it has taken some years for both the industry and the regulators to reach the stage of considering the framework in which a controlled degree of self management can proceed.   In this paper, some of the issues relating to the legitimacy of the process are considered, some of the questions raised in the minds of those charged with implementing the legislation are discussed, and the views of some eminent authors are examined.   The latter part of the paper focuses on a programme called the Reduced Site Surveillance Programme, which grew out of Goal 2 of the New Zealand Mining Inspection Group's 5-Year Strategic Plan. The programme is described in some detail, and the criteria applied at each stage of the programme is discussed. The paper concludes with the author's expectations of the longer term outcomes of the programme.

Grey River Gold Mining Ltd commenced dredging alluvial flats in the Grey River Valley in 1989. Previous drilling indicated over 100 million cubic metres of gravels with some 90 per cent of the gold in the bottom seven metres. The dredge built by Rahco, Spokane, was innovative in a number of aspects but particularly in the fact that a separate ladder with a cutter and pump was used to strip the overburden and a bucketline to mine the gold bearing wash below. Metallurgical studies and exploration were initiated when the project commenced. Leasing and environmental considerations were investigated and action taken. While progress is being made, the operation at this stage is not meeting required production and performance. Main problems have been with the stripping system and wear.

Crocidolite deposits in the Hamersley Ranges, NW. of Western Australia, occur over a length of 180 miles and a width of 20' to 30 miles. Their stratigraphic environment and mineralogy is comparable to that of similar deposits of the Cape Belt, South Africa. It is probable that the known exposures' represent only a small portion of the total extent.Current production is wholly by Australian Blue Asbestos Pty. Ltd. at Wittenoom Gorge and has been in the order of 1,2,000 to 14,000 long t.p.a over the past six years.INTRODUCTIONThe Hamersley Ranges are located in the NW. Division of Western Australia and extend, approximately, from latitudes 21° 30' to 23°S and longitudes 117° to 1200 E. Their mean height above sea level is 2,000 ft, and they rise from 600 to 800 ft above the general level of the tableland which extends SE. from the coastal town of Roebourne.Mt. Bruce, the highest peak, is 4,024 ft above sea level. The ranges are intersected by numerous north-flowing streams, which are dry during the greater part of the year. These streams have carved deep gorges, and it is in these that the principal deposits of crocidolite outcrop.The presence of the mineral was first recorded in 1917, but the deposits remained untouched until 1937 when strong market demand for crocidolite resulted in considerable prospecting and mining activity, particularly in Yampire, Wittenoom and Dale's Gorges. It was established also that the blue asbestos belt extended from Willi Wolli Springs NW. to Millstream station, Le., over a length of 180 miles and a width of 20 to 30 miles. The stability of parallel underground coal mine galleries and pillars have been investigated using two- and three-dimensional (3D) numerical stress analysis. Anisotropic horizontal in situ stresses and the direction of the excavations have been considered in the numerical analysis. The stability of the tunnels driven in a coal seam at various working depths has been investigated taking into account different strata conditions and then results from two- and three-dimensional numerical modelling studies were compared. Maximum principal stress components have been chosen in three various directions: vertical, parallel and perpendicular to the tunnel axis. Analysis have shown that in the anisotropic in situ stress field, the favourable direction of underground mine openings which have different strata conditions depend not only on the horizontal in situ stresses but also on the vertical in situ stresses. Furthermore, 3D numerical modelling studies have been carried out to investigate stability of multiple entry longwall panel gate roads and pillars with various width-to-length ratios (W/L). Results of the modelling studies have shown that the critical dimension of coal pillars depends on their width and the direction of maximum horizontal stresses.

The presence of undetonated explosives in a rock face after firing constitutes a hazard which can result in a fatal or serious accident if undetected before drilling commences.Most accidents caused by drilling into explosives are the result of failure to examine the working face properly and lack of care in subsequent drilling operations; it is not always realized that explosive may be left in the butts of holes or may be driven into cracks or crevices in the rock.Obviously the best means of preventing accidents of this nature is to adopt methods of drilling, charging and firing which will reduce the hazard to a minimum.There are three ways in which undetonated explosives may be left in the rock face, namely:1. Misfires.2. Cut-off shots.3. Incomplete detonation or failure of the charge to propagate throughout.MisfiresNo attempt will be made in this paper to deal fully with the question of the prevention of misfires, as apart from the fact that most of the preventive methods are well known, it is believed that if the miner receives his explosives and means of initiation in good order, and proper care is taken in their use, the failure of a charge to fire will be a rare occurrence. The provision of central fuse capping stations on mines has gone a long way towards the elimination of misfires caused by the mishandling of safety fuse anddetonators.

At Reefton, mesothermal gold deposits occur in the Ordovician Greenland Group basement and bituminous coal deposits occur in overlying Eocene Brunner Coal Measures. These different resource types occur in close proximity to one another in the same topography, vegetation and climate. Both types of resources have been mined for many years and as a result historic mining areas discharge water with chemistry reflecting the mineralogy of the deposits. Coal measures release natural acid rock drainage throughout the region due to oxidation of pyrite in coal and associated sediments. Levels of acidity are increased in mining areas, and pH near three is common. Gold mines contain pyrite, arsenopyrite and stibnite. Discharge waters from these sites have pH near seven because of the high acid neutralising capacity of the basement rocks. Both coal and gold mining sites have iron oxyhydroxide precipitates in drainage waters. These precipitates are more abundant at gold mining sites, and one deposit is up to 5 m thick. Iron oxyhydroxide at coal mine sites contain Zn (up to 89 ppm), Ni (up to 10 ppm), As (up to 163 ppm), Cr (up to 23 ppm), Pb (up to 16), and Cu (up to 11 ppm). Jarosite group minerals have been identified in the coalmine iron oxyhydroxide, although most of the material is amorphous. Gold mine iron oxyhydroxide contains Zn (up to 353 ppm), Ni (up to 592 ppm), Cr (up to 17 ppm), Cu (up to 72 ppm), Pb (up to 29 ppm), Sb (up to 230 ppm), and this material is particularly high in As (up to 20 wt per cent). Most of the material is amorphous but distinctive zones (mm scale) are As rich (up to 30 wt per cent As oxide). Pharmacosiderite, K2Fe4(As04)3 (OH)5.6.3H20, is a secondary mineral in one deposit. These iron oxyhydroxide deposits are useful indicators for the metals mobilised into the environment by oxidation in the historic workings.

Grey River Gold Mining Limited (GRGML) has constructed and largely completed the commissioning of an alluvial gold dredge designed to recover gold from a low grade gold deposit in the Grey River Valley, New Zealand. The most important resource that GRGML has are the people who are employed by the organisation. The low grade of the deposit necessitates the requirement to operate the dredge at optimum efficiency, which in turn requires the work force to be of high calibre and continually motivated. The primary prerequisite for employment at GRGML is for employees to be receptive to new ideas and have the adaptability to develop new skills and apply those skills to the changing demands of the workplace.   A continually changing organisational structure is utilised to meet the needs of a changing work environment. The adoption of an innovative site employment agreement allowing for flexible working hours has aided the achievement of good employee productivity and attendance.   Employees gain a higher quality of life by working a roster pattern involving twelve hour shifts and a four day on, four day off pattern.   Employees and management are communicating very well and working together to achieve organisational goals which will ultimately benefit the employees, the shareholders, the local community and the mining industry generally.

Green policies have gained momentum since the 1972 Stockholm, Environment Conference. The environmental movement has influenced political initiatives both in New Zealand and abroad. Governments and international institutions have addressed local, regional and global environmental issues with varying degrees of success. New Zealand so far has not supported the United Nations' call for sustainable development in a consistent manner. New institutions and new rules for resource management mean there are opportunities to look after the land in different and more ecologically sensitive ways than has happened in the past. The increasing influence of regional councils in resource management planning will have important implications for mining and mineral exploration. These trends are discussed and possible future events outlined. Green policies have gained momentum since the 1972 Stockholm Environment Conference. Environmental issues are now global and the twentieth year Environment Conference planned for 1992 is likely to see new commitments made by world leaders and their national governments. Green politics may be the popular trend of the moment but green principles of managing the earth's resources are here to stay. There are many businessmen, many technologists, and many politicians who have hoped that the environmental movement was a passing fad and would fade into oblivion. The evidence is otherwise. Far from passing into oblivion, the environmental movement is growing rapidly. Each year brings further scientific data that indicates mankind is on a self destructive course unless we learn how to better manage the earth's natural resources. This information has contributed to a growing population of environmentally aware people. In the last 20 years there have been messages of concern about a population increase out of control and the energy crisis which focused on dwindling oil stocks. The issues are all interrelated including the present global issues of climate change and thinning ozone layers. The attention being given the messages by the United Nations and member states requires similar attention by industry. The problems have been identified; the challenge is to determine what should be done about them. Every challenge brings new opportunities and the future need not be doom and destruction. Mining is seen by some of the environmental action groups as unnecessarily destructive of the environment, but I do not see mining ceasing in the next few decades. Rather, the rules will be clearer with some areas excluded from mining, the methods of extraction will improve, the technology of processing will become more sophisticated and restoration of mining sites will be not only normal practice worldwide, but the end result may leave no hazards, may enhance the landscape and may result in acceptance of the industry by the general public. For that to happen, commitment and cooperation is required between the industry, the government, and society. As an Officer of Parliament my role is to review the system of agencies and processes established by Government for allocating, using and preserving natural resources and to report whether the system is maintaining and improving the quality of the environment. I also have a responsibility to see that the environmental planning and management carried out by public authorities is effective. That Ineans I have a keen interest in how the mining industry is administered by New Zealand public authorities, including Ministers of the Crown and district and regional councils. Today I intend to review the approach to resource management being taken by international agencies and by the New Zealand Government, and to comment on how environmental impact assessment for mineral exploration, as well as mining, may be administered in the future.

An on-stream shale detector has been developed that is suitable for use on conveyor belts carrying iron ore of up to 200 mm particle size. The shale is distinguished from high-grade iron ore by means of the substantially greater total natural gamma-ray activity (400-3000 keV) of the shale, which is due to the presence of uranium (214Bi), thorium (208TI) and potassium (40K). Other gangue materials, sueh as highly siliceous cherts and jaspilites, escape detection because of their low activity. A dynamic trial of the shale detector at Mt Whaleback, using a large-volume (100 × 100 400 mm long) "Polyscin" Nal(TI) gamma-ray detector, demonstrated that as little as 20 tonne of ore on a conveyor belt (equivalent to partial truckloads of ore) can readily be monitored for shale content.

When the first rush of miners took place on the Molyneux River, in the Dunstan Gorge, the gold was won by means of cradling the gravel, which was shovelled from the various beaches and crevices in the rock-bound sides of the river.The above method of winning the gold was only practicable when the beaches were not covered with water, hence the work was usually carried on during the winter months, the ordinary level of the river during spring and summer months being some ten or twelve feet above winter level. The melting of the spow in the Lakes water-shed being responsible for the high summer level of the river.As the available beaches were worked out, other methods of winning the gold were proposed and worked with more or less successful results the first advance being to work the bed of the river by means of a spoon dredge. The spoon was made with a round lip or ring of iron, having a steel cutting edge on one half of the circumference, at the opposite side a socket being forged to take a long spar or boom, which was securely fitted thereto. At intervals round the hoop, half-inch holes were bored to enable. a bullock-hide bag to be laced on to same. The spoon was worked from a pontoon which carried a crab winch, tackles and the necessary washing appliances to treat the washdirt lifted. Increasing demand for copper, lead and zinc with continuous depletion of good grade ore reserves, warrants the need for utilization of lean and complex ores of these metals. There is worldwide effort to develop suitable processes for these purposes. The present paper deals with the chloride leaching of complex base metal sulphide concentrates of two Indian deposits. A two stage leaching process is suggested keeping selectivity of metal dissolution in view.In the first stage most of the lead and zinc are reacted with dilute FeCI3 (0.3M) solutions at a temperature ono°c where major portion of the lead remains in the residue and zinc reports in solution. After taking out lead chloride by brine leaching, the residue has been treated for copper dissolution. A concentrated FeCI3 leaching at boiling temperature as well as ambient aqueous chlorine leaching have been separately tried to dissolve out the copper from the residue. Based on the results obtained, a flowsheet for the proposed process is presented.
