A new type of steady-state thermal conductivity apparatus is presented and described. Results of measurements on Berea sandstone, Solehofen limestone, Bandera sandstone and Bakelite are presented. The measurements were made in a two-hour period at temperatures up to 80C and axial stress to 125 bars. Results show that the thermoelectric heat pump and tbermistor-controlled electric heater can be used in a steady-state apparatus for measuring thermal conductivity of mck. Steady-state is reached within two hours. With Urethane foam insulation, not more than 3 per cent of heat is lost by radial flaw. The apparatus can be used as a comparator or for absolute thermal conductivity determinations. INTRODUCTION Calculations of heat flow through the earth, both for scientific purposes and engineering design, require thermal-conductivity data on rock. However, the high variability of rock often makes handbook thermal-conductivity data of little value. For engineering purposes in particular, it is desirable to have measured data on samples of the rock mass under study. Laboratory methods for measuring thermal conductivity of rock use either time-dependent1-3 or steady - state temperatures .4,5 The time -dependent (transient) techniques give thermal diffusivity from which thermal conductivity can be calculated if the specific heat and density of the sample is known. Most transient techniques require lengthy and involved sample preparation. Also, the accuracy tends to be low. Steady-state techniques are more exact and are the most commonly used. The steady-state methods, however, also have their difficulties. A long time is often required to reach steady state, troubles have been encountered in establishing good thermal contact between the heating and cooling elements and the rock sample, and unaccounted-for heat losses are difficult to prevent. In this paper we present a description of a new type of steady-state thermal conductivity apparatus. With it, measurements have been made in two hours at temperatures up to 80C and axial stress to 125 bars. Sample preparation is simple and no thermal conductivity standard is needed.6 APPARATUS Our steady-state apparatus is an improvement . over the conduction pile used by Zierfuss and van der vliet4 and Somerton.5 A linear heat flux is established through a conduction pile consisting of the rock sample and a standard material of known thermal conductivity in series. The mineralogy and textures of a portion oC ore from the 25 level northern orebody, North mine, Broken Hill are described. This ore, in places, contains up to 70 per cent cubanite (CuFe2S3 ) which has crystallized directly with other sulphides and associated gangue minerals.Several breakdown reactions involving the cubanite are also considered.

Wellbore stability is a major concern for drilling in naturally fractured formations. The infiltration of drilling mud into the fractures is a factor, which may compromise wellbore integrity due to the loss of strength experienced by the fractures. The reduction in the fracture frictional and cohesive properties is attributed to weakening of the infill materials and lubrication of fracture asperities by the mud filtrate. One way to investigate the influence of mud infiltration on wellbore stability in fractured formations is to use a numerical modeling approach. A requirement for the numerical model is the ability to predict the region of mud infiltration. This paper describes a numerical technique to model the extent of mud infiltration for application in coupled fluid-mechanical simulations in densely fractured rock masses using the computer code, UDEC. Several factors are considered including fracture pattern, in-situ stresses, reduction in joint frictional angle and cohesion, viscosity of the mud filtrate and fracture plugging. Results of numerical simulations are presented to illustrate the technique and show the influence of these factors on the extent of mud infiltration. Un des problèmes importants posés par le forage en milieu fissuré saturé, est celui du maintient de la stabilité du puit. L’infiltration de boue de forage dans le massif peut avoir pour effet de réduire les propriétés frictionnelles et cohésives des fractures et de compromettre ainsi la stabilité du puit de forage. Le radoucissement des propriétés des fractures est attribué à la dégradation du materiau de remplissage et au pouvoir lubrifiant des boues. L’analyse numérique offre un moyen d’investiguer l’influence jouée par l’infiltration de boue sur la stabilité du puit. Un des critères de sélection du modèle numérique sera son pouvoir de prédiction du domaine d’infiltration de boue. Cet article décrit une technique numérique permettant de modéliser l’infiltration de boue de forage dans le cadre de simulations hydro-mécaniques, en milieu à haute densité de fractures, effectuées avec le logiciel de calcul UDEC. Parmis les facteurs tenus en compte, on trouvera la nature du réseau de fractures, les contraintes in-situ, le radoucissement en friction et cohésion des joints, la viscosité de la boue et le bourrage des fractures. Des résultats de simulations sont présentés pour illustrer la technique et montrer l’influence de ces facteurs sur la taille du domaine d’infiltration de boue. This general report considers what promoters of deep basement projects want from their teams and whether they get it often enough. Most large projects are based on complex financial models where the funding is related to a future income stream. Project delays and cost over-runs can critically affect the financial model. Too often, delays and cost over-runs originate in the substructure and foundations. We must take positive steps to improve our industry's reputation for reliability.

Titanium is not yet being produced on a commercial scale despite the facts that it has some impressive properties, and that it occurs very abundantly in easily-mined, highgrade oxide ores. One important reason for this is that the excellent mechanical properties of the metal were not widely recognised and appreciated until about twenty years ago.Another factor which has tended to retard progress in titanium metallurgy has been the realization that the oxide minerals of titanium are very stable; in other words, considerable energy has to be expended to reduce the oxide to metal. Table 1 presents the minimum energies which would have to be expended to produce one ton of each of the metals, aluminium, magnesium, titanium and iron from their respective oxides under theoretically ideal conditions at normal temperature and pressure. At higher temperatures, the minimum energy requirements are different, but the values for the various metals still fall in the same order as indicated in Table 1.In actual fact, the energy consumption in the case of any particular metal is higher than the ideal value by an amount which can be determined only by' the results of plant practice. Northparkes was the first mine in Australia to use block cave mining method which relies on gravity and natural rock stresses to fragment and recover the ore. It was also the first hard rock mine to use hydraulic fracturing, in conjunction with CSIRO, to promote caving of E26 Lift 1. The technique was later used on E26 Lift 2 wedge and E48 prior to undercutting.Northparkes production is currently sourced from the E48 Lift 1 block cave mine and E26SLC. The E48 block cave contains economic ore to the north and south of the current cave footprint. To recover this ore the footprint has been extended on the north and south with two extraction drives and one extraction drive, respectively. Modelling of cavability above the additional drives indicated that the cave would not readily propagate to a sufficient height of draw to mobilise the ore and tended to arch over into the existing cave. To address the modelling results and to reduce the risk of the project, rock mass preconditioning was adopted.This fracturing campaign was performed from surface drill holes adjacent the subsidence zone angled to intersect the higher grade and higher elevation ore zones.Optical televiewer surveys, run prior to fracturing, picked intervals and fault zones to be avoided. Holes were resurveyed post-fracturing to detect newly created fractures and as a measure of success of the program.During fracturing operations water and gel fractures were run at varying depths and pumping pressure was logged for each fracture. The mine seismic system monitored significant events and dye in the fluids utilised for tracking water inflow locations during underground inspections.Towards the end of the project, guar fibres from gel were detected within the mill circuit and required treatment to resume optimum processing.CITATION:Webster, S, Snyman, L and Samosir, J, 2016. To carry out a physicochemical substantiation of a transition to ?soft? modes of reduction of calcine obtained by desulfurizing roasting of nickel concentrate produced as a result of copper-nickel converter matte separation in a nickel anode production circuit, an analysis has been conducted of the macrokinetic behavior of actual calcine samples in the presence of gaseous H2-CO mixtures and solid reductant additives. Within a temperature range of 900°C to 1100°C the main regularities typical of the calcine reduction process with individual gases (H2, CO) also take place when using a gaseous mixture. Under the conditions of low-temperature (900°C to 1000°C) nickel oxide reduction with products of fuel oil conversion in the presence of coke, the role of the latter is insignificant from the technological viewpoint. As a result of the present investigations, we have obtained analytical expressions of macrokinetic parameters of the reaction interaction within the [NiO] calcine-H2-CO-C-CO2-H2O-O2-N2 system.

Roof falls are one of the leading ground control problems that adversely influence productivity and worker safety in underground mines, construction sites, and nuclear waste repositories. To control roof stability problems, the operator needs to have practical methods for measuring changes in strata conditions and criteria for defining the timing of secondary support installation. The objective of this study was to develop measurement techniques and criteria for assessing roof conditions at the mining face. An integrated rock deformation and tomographic imaging method was developed and applied at two sites in a western U.S. trona mine. It was shown that rock damage occurred at a deformation of 30 to 60 mm (1.2 to 2.4 in) (2 to 4 pct strain) and was associated with a significant (16 pct) reduction in wave velocity. Thus, supplementary support may be installed when there is a measured change in wave velocity of at least 16 pct. Tomographic measurements can be obtained in rocks rapidly, thus providing a powerful tool for analyzing growth of failure and for installing supplementary support systems in a timely manner.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the ZnO-Fe2O3-Fe3O4 system at 1,000°, 1,300°, and 1,400° C, with oxygen pressures between 1.0 and lx10-4 atmospheres. The results, divided into the thermodynamic properties as related to the spinel structure, and the thermodynamic properties as related to zinc concentrate roasting, were used to calculate the activities of ZnO, Fe2O4, and Fe3O4 within the spinel solid solution region of the ternary system, and the pseudo-binary activities of ZnFe2O4 and Fe304. The activities of both systems show large positive deviations from Raoult's Law, especially at high Fe3O4 concentrations. The free energies, the enthalpies, and the entropies of mixing for the binary system were calculated from the binary activities, and the entropies of mixing were compared with two statistical models, one representing an ideal solution, and one representing the mixing of a normal with an inverse spinel. The binary entropy of mixing seemed to be better represented by the latter statistical model, indicating that the tetrahedral and octahedral cations of the reactants tend to remain in the product, even at the high temperatures of the study. This comparison also indicated that the cations of the components are the major contributing factors to the thermodynamic properties.

MERCURY, also widely known as quicksilver, ranks tenth in quantity in world output of nonferrous metals. However, its unusual and desirable combination of properties- liquid liquidity at ordinary temperatures, high density, uniform volume expansion, electrical conductivity, ability to alloy readily, high surface tension, chemical stability, and toxicity of its compounds -gives mercury an industrial and military importance out of proportion to the small physical size of the production industry. Although mercury has been known and used for over 20 centuries, until the 16th century consumption was small and chiefly in medicine. Since then mercury's applications have paralleled scientific advancements, kind current principal uses of mercury are in electrical apparatus, industrial and control instruments, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and the electrolytic prepa¬ration of chlorine and caustic soda. Other materials may be substituted for mercury in come applications; yet, for those uses that require mercury's unusual combination of physical and chemical properties, there is no ideal substitute.

The principle of personal safety is as old as the human race. The application of this principle to industry is of much more recent origin, and may be said to be almost exclusively the product of the twentieth century. The enormous strides in technique and production mode prior to the turn of the century had been achieved without any real regard for the crippled human by-products of that expansive era. It was accepted that. accidents were inevitable and formed part of the price that must be paid for production. It was not until 1885 that the first Workmen's Compensation Act was passed in Germany making the employer financially liable for injuries suffered on his plant.With awakening social conscience came the first organised efforts to reduce accidents in industry. Early 19th century literature dealing with the development of powerdriven machinery and the growth of industry in Europe contains many references to the unsafe and unhealthy working conditions that accompanied the change-over from the home workshop to the industrial plant. By the year 1900, there were in Germany - and a little later in England governmental regulations dealing with the guarding of hazardous machinery. American industry, now the acknowledged leader in industrial safety, admits freely that when an organised safety movement commenced in that country, there was already a considerable amount of information available to them from European experience. I was lucky to land a job in the powder business. I was looking for some way to support my wife and first child to be when I saw an ad in the Hercules magazine, “Explosives Engineer” for technical representatives. I answered the ad in hopes that a geologist might find something else to do besides sit oil wells or “doodlebug” for oil. Both of these occupations I had tried and while the money was good the life was a bit erratic. The Army also wasn’t made for a guy who asked too many questions although my two plus years in uniform were interesting and in a few cases fun.

The mechanical properties of rock samples of identical lithologicalcomposition may vary significantly due to existence of materialdiscontinuities. Laboratory tests were carried out to determine the effect of material discontinuities on rock sample mechanical properties. The investigations consisted of detecting discontinuities, observing the failure mechanisms during uniaxial compressive strength tests, and analysing of the factors affecting the strength. A non-destructive testing method has been adopted to assist in thedetection of discontinuities. Laboratory testing proved that fractures leading to failures initiated on the detected discontinuities. The location, orientation, size, density and extent of the discontinuities contribute to different modes of failure and these affect the mechanical parameters of rock samples. Four modes of failure were distinguished for hard and brittlecylindrical rock samples. These modes were referred to as simple shear failure, multiple shear failure, multiple fracturing and vertical splitting. To evaluate the effect of discontinuities on mechanical parameters, the ratio of uniaxial compressive to tensile (Brazilian) strength was calculated and analysed for the different modes of failure. It was found that the value of the ratio depended on the mode of sample failure. The lowest value of the ratio was observed for shear mode of failure and the highest for vertical splitting mode of failure.

"Generally speaking, the most intensive efforts at dust control in the mining industry have, in the past, been concerned with underground operations and where uranium ore or high silica material is processed. In the past several years, Stoop Rock has made Intensive efforts to reduce dust levels in it's Iron ore pelletizing complex. There have been no great engineering break-throughs with regard to dust control in such plants, and certainly no new engineering techniques have had to be applied at Steep Rock. This paper deals with how significant improvements in dust levels have been achieved through minor modification to dust collectors and ventilation units, improvements in operating practices, and education of supervisors and hourly personnel.PROCESS DESCRIPTIONSteep Rock Iron Mines is located 120 miles west of Thunder Bay near Atikokan. The copper mines of Michigan are all in the northern part of that state on the Keweenaw Peninsula, which extends from the (Michigan) mainland for about seventy miles northeasterly toward the middle of Lake Superior. The mines occur in a belt or zone occupying the central portion of the peninsula from end to end.. The most productive mines for many years past have been those located not far from the city of Houghton in' the central part of the zone, in a section extending about ten miles southwest of Houghton and fifteen miles northeast. The most important mines in order of location, from the northeast to south¬west, are the following: Mohawk, Ahmeek, Allouez, North Kearsarge, Wolverine, South Kearsarge, Centennial, Calumet. and Hecla, Osceola, Franklin, Quincy, Hancock, Isle Royale, Superior, Baltic, Trimountain, and Champion. The first three named are in Keweenaw county and all of the others are in Houghton county. Still farther to the southwest are the Lake, Mass, Adventure, Michigan, Victoria, and White Pine mines. These are in Ontonagon county.History. The exploitation of these copper mines extends back into prehistoric times. There is little evidence that the American Indians carried on mining operations in this region in the period shortly before the advent of white men, but there is abundant evidence that the ancestors of the Indians, •or some earlier inhabitants of the region, carried on primitive mining operations. For example, Mr. S. O. Knapp, Agent of the Minne¬sota Mining Company, in the winter of 1847-48, made the first discovery of prehistoric mining. The Bureau of Mines and Old Ben Coal Co. concluded a cost-sharing contract in 1975, the objective of which was to demonstrate the Herrin No. 6 coalbed in southern Illinois can be mined safely by longwall methods. Under the agreement, three longwall panels are to be mined at Old Ben No. 24 mine. A premining investigation laid the groundwork for specifying a roof-support system designed to control hazardous ground. Old Ben Coal Co. and Bureau engineers selected lemiscate-type roof shields. A rock mechanics program and geological mapping provide early warning capability and criteria for future equipment design. The effect of mining on the surface was monitored by a surface survey to develop subsidence-prediction criteria for the Illinois coal basin. The first of the three longwall panels started up in September 1976 and was completed in May 1977. The major adverse condition was the occurrence of limestone concretions, called coal balls, in massive pods. The shields provided adequate roof control even in faulty ground. Operation of the second panel started on August 1, 1977, following panel-to-panel transfer of the equipment. The accident rate was low.

The study site in northeastern Illinois underwent surface mining for coal in 1943 and was reclaimed by the state of Illinois in 1972-1973. Additional soil amendments and seed were applied to the spoil surface in 1975-1980. Previous studies in 1975-1978 had shown that the surface spoil materials and five final-cut lakes at the site were quite acidic and the lakes contained high concentrations of sulfate and dissolved metals. Surface runoff water from monitoring plots in 1976 were only moderately acidic and the mean concentrations of most dissolved metals and sulfate in the runoff waters were less than 25% of the concentrations found in Lake B. By 1980, vegetation had become well established over most of the mined area. However, the five final-cut lakes (Lakes A-E) remained acidic. The purpose of the study reported here was to determine the physical and geochemical subsurface conditions of the spoil materials, the hydrologic flow system within the spoils, and the magnitude of acidic spoil leachate migration into the lakes and into the wetland prairie north of the mine site. Lakes A, B, C, and E were still very acidic in 1980-1981 (pH range: 2.9-3.4; aridity range: 110-860 mg/L as CaCO3). Lake B had the worst water quality, with mean concentrations of dissolved aluminum, iron, manganese, and sulfate of 75, 25, 37, and 3340 mg/L, respectively. Shallow groundwaters in spoil materials around Lake B had a lower pH and about two to four times greater concentrations of aridity, aluminum, manganese, zinc, and other metals and nearly 20 times greater dissolved iron than the water in Lake B. The shallow groundwaters in undisturbed soils and bedrock 10-30 m north of the mine site spoils generally were alkaline, but did contain occasional moderately high sulfate and metal concentrations. Pumping tests and recovery tests conducted in piezometers showed hydraulic conductivities of spoil materials ranging from less than 10- to 10-5 m/s; hydraulic conductivities of natural soils and bedrock were measured between 10-10 to 10-7 m/s. Water levels in spoil materials increased rapidly in response to rainstorm events and the recession curves were relatively quick to decline, lasting only two or three days. Quick infiltration of rainfall into the spoil surface and percolation down to the water table caused a rise in groundwater levels and movement of spoil groundwater into the lakes. This groundwater component in the lake water budgets could account for most of the water quality problems occurring in the acid lakes.

"The mining industry faces growing challenges from more complex and lower grade deposits, rising costs, limited energy and water availability, and increasing societal pressure to operate more sustainably. Mining operations need to be more efficient, not just to reduce environmental impact, but also to remain economically viable.To maximize profitability and sustainability, existing operations and new projects must consider integration and optimization of all stages of production. A mining operation is essentially a series of inter-connected processes, with the performance and outputs of each stage affecting the subsequent ones. Optimizing stages in isolation can result in sub-optimal overall performance.The industry has long recognized the benefits of holistic optimization using the Mine-to-Mill concept, and there are many well documented successes. However, it is increasingly common to observe operations simply increasing explosive consumption in the mine and expecting optimization of the entire value chain (mining and processing). For true holistic optimization, blast intensity is not necessarily increased, but rather adjusted to best suit the requirements of the different types of ores treated, the circuit configuration and equipment, installed comminution power and the downstream beneficiation processes. It is a fully integrated effort with optimization of many aspects in the mine, comminution and separation processes.To be successful, optimization of the production chain from mine to process requires a site-specific, structured methodology supported by extensive ore characterization, auditing, surveys, data analysis, mathematical modelling simulations and a cost / benefit analysis. Following this methodology, optimization strategies are rapidly identified and implemented considering mine and plant constraints. Management needs to set up appropriate KPIs and site personnel need to be trained for the new operating strategies to be successfully incorporated into site practices and procedures in the production environment. This will ensure the benefits are achieved and maintained. This paper describes the methodology employed by Hatch to improve overall efficiency and profitability from mine to process. Two case study examples at Russian gold operations and benefits achieved are presented."

GOING west from Denver on Route 6, the direct road to Grand Junction, one gets the first glimpse of mining a few miles east of Denver near Idaho Springs where the workings of defunct gold mines are visible on the sides of mountains along the highway. One enterprising company is turning a profit by showing tourists through the mine and mill and then selling them gold samples on the way out. We have always known that mining people are ingenious, but this proves it. About five and a half hours fast driving west from Denver brings one to Rifle, Colo., which is the site of the oil shale mine, retorting plant, and refinery of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. As you drive up to the mine, you can see a portal high on the face of the cliff in front of you where the mine surface plant literally hangs by its toenails. Below, the retorting plant and refinery gleam in the sunlight. Up at the mine, Fred Wright will show you how the oil shale is extracted in two benches (a third bench would be used for commercial mining) by the room-and-pillar method. In mining the top level, an underground crew of thirteen men have been able to produce 1500 tons of shale in each eight-hour shift. To do this, the mine is thoroughly mechanized.
