New 40Ar/39Ar dates of vein and wall rock adularia from seven epithermal deposits and one porphyry copper prospect help constrain the ages of mineralisation in the Hauraki Goldfield. Vein adularia from the Paritu region yielded a single 40Ar/39Ar plateau date of 16.315 ¦ 0.066 Ma. Five 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates of three samples of vein adularia from the Opitonui deposit overlap within error to yield a preferred age of 13.149 ¦ 0.016 Ma. Two samples of vein adularia from the Night Reef at the Broken Hills deposit yield exceptionally flat 40Ar/39Ar plateaus, and all dates overlap within error to provide an age of 7.121 ¦ 0.010 Ma. Two 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates of one sample of vein adularia from the Wharekirauponga deposit overlap within error to provide an age of 6.318 ¦ 0.061 Ma. Four 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates of three samples of vein adularia from the Maratoto deposit overlap within error to provide an age of 6.411 ¦ 0.022 Ma. Two samples of adularia from altered wall rock at the Sovereign deposit yield three 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that range from 6.547 ¦ 0.021 to 6.806 ¦ 0.028 Ma. This suggests that mineralisation formed around 6.6 Ma, but the results are complicated because the adularia contains minor illite that post-dates adularia formation. Results from the Karangahake deposit are complex. Two samples of vein adularia yield three 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that range from 6.116 ¦ 0.116 to 6.901 ¦ 0.101 Ma, whereas one sample of wall rock adularia that contains minor late illite yields two 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that overlap within error to provide a date of 5.734 ¦ 0.041. The range of dates indicates that more work is necessary to understand the history of mineralisation at this deposit. Two samples of vein adularia from the Tui deposit yield four 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that overlap within error to provide an age of 5.714 ¦ 0.017 Ma. These results confirm previous work that indicates that the ages of epithermal deposits young southward in the Hauraki Goldfield. These results are also consistent with previously postulated different ages for deposits hosted in Kuaotunu Subgroup rocks in the northern goldfield (>10 Ma), and deposits hosted in Waiwawa Subgroup rocks in the southern goldfield (7.1 to 5.7 Ma).

Schellhorn in 1987, Halliburton combined their existing cement slurry mixing and pumping technology with oilfield drilling practices and a new tool design to field test the viability of the concept. Results looked encouraging, and Halliburton asked it's sister company, Brown & Root to evaluate and further develop the process. With Brown & Root's knowledge of the construction industry, the original concept has developed into a viable and efficient foundation construction system.

A series of electron beam, cold hearth, single melt Ti-6Al-4V plates (nominally 2.5 cm thick) impacted by 2cm diameter, 4340 steel projectiles (with 54g nominal mass) at velocities ranging from 0.633 to 1.027 km/s were sectioned along the impact axis and examined by optical metallography to characterize the formation, growth, and microstructure of adiabatic shear bands. Near ballistic limit velocities, the shear bands propagate towards the rear of the target where they coalesce and grow to provide a cylindrical solid state flow regime for the plug volume.

"Hydrocyclone-thickener circuit is a promising solution to enhance the dewatering efficiency in mineral industries. The challenges in the circuit is reducing particle size in the thickener feed and the good feature is a rise in the retention time of sediments in the thickener. In this work, the effect of particle size, bed depth and residence time on the thickener performance were investigated. In this order, pilot scale columns were employed at Sarcheshmeh and Shahrebabak copper complexes. Furthermore, the influence of residence time was differentiated due to the variations in the bed depth and settling flux. Moreover, a new approach was introduced to estimate solids residence time in the thickener. results indicated that with smaller particles that are introduced to the column, the bed density as well as thickener discharge solids concentration dropped significantly. It was found that thickener discharge solids concentration fell from 59.6 to 33.8 % with reducing particle size from 130 to 22 µm in the settling flux of 20 t/m2/day. Additionally, it was found that longer residence time and deeper bed resulted in an increase in the thickener performance while the bed depth has a stronger effect. It was proved that employing a hydrocyclone prior to the thickener resuted in an increase in the dewatering efficiency.INTRODUCTION Thickeners are widely employed in mineral industries to recycle tailings and concentrate water content. A limited fraction of suspension water content is recycled using a thickener. For instance, about 50 percent of tailings water content could be recycled using a shallow bed thickener during copper processing. Since the scarcity of global water resources became more serious, the demand for improving dewatering efficiency in mineral industries became more significant [1]. A number of solutions were recommended to enhance dewatering efficiency of thickeners including optimization of current thickeners, employing deep bed thickeners and utilizing thickener-filter or hydrocyclone-thickener circuits. Optimization of existing thickeners is essential, however, it does not meet the significant demand for recycled water. The application of deep bed thickeners (known as paste thickeners) has been rising in the mineral industries [2] due to a higher dewatering efficiency while its costs is remarkable."

"Bauxite has been the almost universal ore of aluminum for about 100 years, with most of the world's reserves oc¬curring in the developing countries. As a result of fiscal and political activities prompted in part by the energy crisis, the formation of the IBA combined with increasing freight and labour costs, these reserves are no longer as competitive or as secure as they once were. This has given fresh impetus to the development of processes for alumina production that utilize raw material other than bauxite. Canada has no bauxite and it is prudent to look for alter¬native raw materials within our own boundaries suitable for one of these processes.Of the three igneous rocks that have been used as a source of alumina, only anorthosite is considered as a potential source in Canada. The Al content would be extracted by a sinter process, which currently requires a raw material with a. minimum of 28% Al2O2. Thus, about 4 tons of anorthosite and 10 to 12 tons of limestone are needed to produce one ton of alumina. There are two petrologically distinct types of anorthosite, one containing the plagioclase andesine-labradorite and around 26% Al2O3, and the other containing upwards of 30% Al2O3, in by¬townite-anorthite; for our purposes they may be con¬sidered as low- and high-alumina anorthosite respectively. The high-alumina anorthosites are somewhat rare; the low-alumina anorthosites are much more common, partic¬ularly in Eastern Canada. Geologically speaking, there is no shortage of anorthosite in Canada. The reserves are im¬mense, although their low Al2O3 content coupled with con¬siderations of location, access and proximity to limestone could be constraints to their development. Fly ash from coal-fired thermal power stations and nepheline syenite can also be used in a sinter process, but neither is likely to be utilized in Canada in the immediate future.The H+ process utilizes an acid attack to leach Al from a raw material with at least 20% Al2O3. One of the best raw materials is kaolinite-bearing clay; not only is it high in Al, but most of it can be extracted. With the possible exception of the Whitemud clay in Saskatchewan, Canada is apparently deficient in clays with sufficient reserves to support an alumina plant utilizing the H+ process. Low-alumina clays with illite and montmorillonite may also prove to be a suitable raw material if advantageously sited with respect to industrial centers. The average shale con¬tains only 15% Al2O33, much of which may be contained in minerals, such as feldspar, not amenable to acid leaching. If shale is used as a source of alumina, it will be because it contains some other valuable commodity, such as oil or uranium, the extraction of which leaves the spent shale upgraded in extractable Al2O3 and lowers the over-all costs to a point where it is economic, Thus, rejects from coal washing plants are most commonly considered as a source of alumina; they are already mined, are available in large and ever increasing amounts, and may contain significant amounts of combustible material which upgrades the Al2O3, content of the resulting ash. Coal rejects from existing and developing coalfields in Alberta and British Columbia are a possible source of raw material, but present data indicate they may contain insufficient Al2O3."

Since Sept. 11, 2001, the author has been asked by several mining companies and mining publications to share some of his insights on how the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center (WTC) and Pentagon might affect the mining industry globally. Until now, the author has been reluctant to express his thoughts in a publication that could possibly fall into the hands of terrorists and give them some ideas that they may not have been previously considering. However, the author discussed the contents of this article with several friends and acquaintances in the international intelligence community. They said that nothing commented on here is new to the terrorists. Potential terrorist targets Sources within the worldwide intelligence gathering community have told the author that current intelligence data indicates that it is likely that the Islamic fundamentalist groups responsible for the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001will likely be directing their effort at foreign business entities. Any overseas or any domestic businesses of highly visible companies that are part of the anti-terrorism alliance should consider themselves a potential target.

A localized nonlinear recoverable resource estimate technique has been applied using typical feasibility or new mining drilling data configurations drawn from a massive database from a mined-out area on a hydrothermal gold deposit. The results were then compared with the corresponding 8 m x 5 m grid grade-control data in order to determine the efficiency of the approach and the validity of the recoverable resource estimates for mine planning and financial forecasts.

Wet-drum magnetic separators are used extensively for upgrading iron ore and for magnetite recovery in dense-medium circuits. In this study the performance of a continuous, laboratory wet-drum magnetic separator was evaluated with and without the application of ultrasonic energy when processing dense medium slurries. Test variables included magnetic-to-nonmagnetic ratio, solids concentration, and nonmagnetic materials. The results indicate that under certain conditions, the purity of the magnetic material increased after ultrasonic treatment.

This study was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to determine whether the sulfur-oxidizing bacterium Thiobacillus thiooxidans could use sulfur compounds to produce sulfuric acid in sufficient quantities to leach valuable metals from low-grade ores. The results of extended tests indicated that the bacterium is capable of extracting appreciable amounts of copper and cobalt from ore and mineral samples when sulfur is available in a state that can be readily assimilated by the organisms. Under the conditions of these tests, this organism was not able to assimilate and oxidize the sulfur as it occurred in the ores and minerals. Ores containing copper minerals in the silicate, carbonate, and oxide forms, in the presence of elemental sulfur, were more susceptible to bacterial action than ores containing copper minerals in the sulfide form. Thiobacillus thiooxidans remained active on elemental sulfur in the presence of some of the ores which were tested, but could not tolerate others. Therefore, strains of the bacterium were progressively adjusted to increasing concentrations (0.5 to 10 grams) of the individual ores until they could remain active on 10-gram portions of all ores being tested.

Some 800 analyses for Cu, Zn, Pb, Ag, Fe, S, CaO, MgO, C02, Si02 and Al203 were used to examine the elemental constitution of the Mount Isa ores, and, for comparison, those of the Northern Leases area.Lead: zinc relations show little order from sample to sample, but means of large zones (Le. individual orebodies) show a highly linear inverse relationship. Lead: silver ratios are fairly constant from sample to sample, and means show a highly linear direct relationship.Sulphide sulphur appears to be related to carbonate and alumina abundance, sulphur decreasing systematically with increase in the ratio CO2:AI203. In all graphs involving members of the group CO2-A203-S the lead-zinc and copper ores conform to the same simple trends, confirming that the two ore types and their host rocks are genetically closely related. The earlier deduction of a volcanic-sedimentary origin for the sulphides of the Black Star orebodies appears compatible with present findings.On the basis of such an origin, the pattern of sulphide occurrence and mineralogy in the Mount Isa district is possibly related to the configuration f the upper surface of the "Eastern Creek Volcanics", the facies patterns of the overlying sedimentary rocks, and to the oldest faults affecting the two.INTRODUCTIONStanton (1962) described and interpreted the chemical constitution of the Black Star No. 2 lead-zinc and the 650750 copper orebodies at Mount Isa. The investigation has now been extended to the other principal orebodies of the area.The earlier study showed that the host rocks of the two adjacent Black Star orebodies were constitutionally closely related, and suggested that this was probably due to their original formation in contiguous zones of sedimentation. On this basis the silica-dolomite of the copper ore appeared to represent the slightly more shoreward, "limey" member, probably a fairly massive algal calcareous sediment laid...

"From the perspective of metallurgical processing, gold ores can be classified into free-milling and refractory ores. Their extractive metallurgy are largely driven by mineralogical factors such as: gold particle size, association with other minerals, coatings and rimmings, presence of cyanicides, oxygen consumers and preg-robbers, presence of refractory gold minerals and locking of submicroscopic gold in sulfide mineral structure etc. Gold process mineralogy helps address issues and problems related to gold ore processing. It provides useful information on process selection, flowsheet development, recovery improvement and reagent consumption optimization. By combining classic mineralogical techniques, modern instrumental analysis and diagnostic metallurgy, the mineralogist is able to balance the various types of gold occurrence in an ore. This paper will provide a broad review of gold process mineralogy and the techniques available, and use case studies to describe how they can be used together, to provide the complete picture of gold process mineralogy in an ore. Examples will be used where applicable.INTRODUCTIONSince the early 1980’s, a great deal of work has been done in the characterization of gold ores, particularly refractory ores (Gasparrini, 1983; Wang, 1984; Hausen, 1985; Haines, 1986; Henley, 1989; Chryssoulis et al., 1990; Wang et al., 1992, 1994; Kojonen, 1999; Simon et al., 1999; Hong et al., 2000; Pals et al, 2003). Process mineralogy has come into its own as a respected inter-discipline in the fields of mineralogy and metallurgy – a subject that occupies an important place in both research and industry. As the free-milling gold ores are being depleted and more refractory ores are being discovered and processed, gold process mineralogy receives more and more attention from both the mineralogist and metallurgist as it helps to solve various problems encountered during gold ore processing. Steadily rising gold prices are also stimulating the need for gold process mineralogy due to the increasing demand for and production of the yellow metal. At SGS Lakefield Research, gold process mineralogy studies are conducted routinely on all types of gold ores and mill products to assist in a wide variety of metallurgical projects. The goal of biodynamic models is to simulate the vibration behaviour of the human body. In combination with experimental studies biodynamical models can be a powerful tool for the analysis of the effects of vibration exposure on health [1] and comfort. This paper gives an overview of the state of the art of biodynamic whole-body vibration models of humans, addressing both numerical models and hardware dummies. Method Two approaches are distinguished, the phenomenological and the anatomical, as illustrated in Figure 1. [ ] Phenomenological models aim to reproduce the vibration behaviour of humans with respect to particular physical quantities, chiefly the driving-point impedance at the interface to the seat, and partly with respect to other transfer functions. Discrete systems of masses, springs, and dampers with several degrees of freedom whose topology and parameters are determined by structure- and parameter identification methods are used in the sense that the functions derived from measurements are reproduced as well as possible. This paper provides an evaluation of this methodology and defines its range of application as well as its limits.

The World Trade Center (WTC) is located on the west side of Manhattan in New York City, approximately 0.5 miles north of Wall Street, and is owned and operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PA). As part of the WTC site redevelopment the New York City Transit Authority?s No. 1 subway line which runs through the site below grade, was underpinned so that the soil beneath it could be removed along with the rest of the new east basement excavation. Consequently a scheme comprising micropile installation through and around the existing subway box was designed. The subway had to remain in use throughout save for planned weekend outages to allow a portion of the underpinning to be fitted through or on to the existing structure. At times this involved accessing and drilling from within the subway tunnel under short General Order (GO) Subway shutdown periods. At either end of the subway passage through the WTC site jet grout underpinning was designed to provide support and to complete the excavation and construction of the east basement wall in the areas beneath the subway where it was impossible to install a slurry wall. The jet grout blocks thus formed had to be largely installed around the clock during 53 hour long GO weekend outages and had to overcome severe logistical constraints in and over the tunnel. The jet grout blocks had to provide strengths of at least 500 psi at 3 days and 700 psi at 28 days. The jet grouted soil mass also had to have a level of permeability less than 0.03 feet/day (1 x 10-7 m/s). After an extensive trial program and then production testing it was concluded that the glacial till above the rock proved to be a particularly difficult soil strata to collect test data from and hence the level of observational monitoring was increased to progress the excavation works. Throughout the installation of micropiles and jet grout columns extensive monitoring was in place and prompted a variety of working method changes. THE West Edmond oil field, which covers parts of Oklahoma, Canadian, Kingfisher, and Logan Counties in the State of Oklahoma, is in geographical extent the largest single oil field found in the state. At the present time, its area of 26,800 acres is almost twice as large as the Oklahoma City field, which hitherto was the state's largest field. Many authorities believe that the West Edmond field is the most important oil pool found in the United States since Pearl Harbor. The discovery of the field without the help of geological, geophysical, or other recognized technical information, the fact that the oil and gas accumulated in a stratigraphic or wedge-type trap, and the rapid development of the productive area under wartime conditions are some of the interesting features of the field. The West Edmond field lies west of the Oklahoma City, Britton, and Edmond fields. The field is in an area that has been considered on the west flank of the Granite Ridge line of folding, on which a number of Central Oklahoma's most important oil fields are located. Over a period of years, especially since the discovery of the new pools such as Oklahoma City, Edmond, Britton, and Crescent, the general area of the West Edmond field has been explored intensively by geological and geophysical methods. This led at times to the drilling of a few dry Wilcox sand tests.
