The Pacheco Pumping Plant is situated on the west end of San Luis Reservoir in western Merced County, California. It is designed to draw water from the reservoir and pump it into a 3,500,000 gallon regulating tank. The water then flows entirely by gravity to the Coyote Pump Station in Morgan Hill, a distance of 40 miles, where it is pumped into Anderson Reservoir. This water is used to recharge the depleted groundwater table in the Santa Clara Valley. Eventually, some of the water will be diverted to Hollister in San Benito County and to Watsonville and Santa Cruz in Santa Cruz County. The owner is the United States Bureau of Reclamation. The underground work consisted of a fifteen foot finished diameter surge shaft 250 feet deep to the crown of the pump chamber; a twenty foot finished diameter pump chamber which declined from the shaft at 14.2% for ninety feet and then ran horizontally for 180 feet; and twelve each five foot diameter steel lined intake shafts 240 feet deep which intersect the pump chamber in the horizontal section. (Figure 1) Upon completion of the pump chamber, the contractor had to dewater the existing tunnel under the reservoir, excavate the remaining fifteen foot plug, and concrete the transition. The low bidder for this contract was Underground - Continental-Heller at 414,456,000. Excavation of the open cut for the pumping plant and surge shaft began on April 14, 1983. This was performed using a Koehring 1066D backhoe, dozer, trucks, and two Cat 631 scrapers. The excavation was started at the surge shaft so that the grouting could begin

The XCVIIth meeting of the Institute for the reading and discussion of papers will be held at Spokane, Wash., beginning Monday, Sept. 27, 1909, as already announced in Special Circulars of May 8 and Aug. 14, 1909, and in the Bulletins for June, July, and August. The meeting will be preceded by a tour through Yellow stone Park and visits to Butte and Anaconda, and will be followed by visits to the Coeur d'Alene district, to the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition at Seattle, to the mining- and smelting-plants near Salt Lake, and to the iron- and lead- and zinc-plants at Pueblo. The special train for the party' will leave Chicago, September 16, and return about October 12. Details of the itinerary are given later in this announcement. The Secretary of the Spokane Local Committee is Lyndon K. Armstrong, 615 Hyde Block, Spokane, Wash., to whom should be addressed all inquiries concerning local matters. The control of the papers and proceedings will remain in charge of the Institute office, as usual. It is greatly to be desired, both in behalf of the Institute and in recognition of the many courtesies to be extended on the trip, that the excursion party be made larger. Exceptional facilities to visit the many mines and smelters have been freely provided; and members are requested to make all reasonable effort to attend the meeting at Spokane and participate in the excursions. Vale is in the early stages of commissioning its Onça Puma nickel operations. The project is meant for the production of 58,000 tpa of nickel contained in ferro-nickel, substantially contributing to the company?s vision to achieve world leadership in the nickel business. Mineral resources will be exploited from the homonymous deposits in the Midwest of state of Para, Brazil ? some 100 km southwestwards from the company?s Carajás iron ore properties. Resources as of 83 Mt at 1.73 % Ni will sustain a mine life of approximately 40 years. The property was acquired in late 2005 and Vale has since extended the engineering studies and proceeded with the implementation. Nickel will be mined from saprolitic ore at a rate of approximately 10 Mtpa (ore plus waste) in early years ? ramping up to some 15 Mtpa 7 years later ?, to feed the plant at a rate of 2.5 Mtpa. The process uses conventional RKEF (Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace) pyrometalurgical route whereby the ore is homogenized, calcined in rotary kilns, melted in electric furnaces and further refined to ferro-nickel. The plant has been designed and constructed applying the latest available technology, aligned with Vale?s vison to exceed the highest existing standards for environmental control, health and safety and productivity in the industry. Total investments in these operations are anticipated to correspond to USD 2.3 Bi and will materially contribute to the regional development and well being of the nearby communities and other stakeholders.

A process has been developed in the laboratory and expanded to semi-pilot-plant scale for recovering titania, iron, and byproducts from two types of titaniferous iron ores. A reducing roast with coke and soda ash followed by grinding and magnetic separation produced powdered iron and slag from which titania and byproducts were recovered by H2SO4 decomposition. Based on the steps tested on a. semi-pilot-plant scale supplemented by the results of the laboratory investigations, enough data are available to make a balanced flow sheet. Combined data from the laboratory and semi-pilot plant indicated that 85 to 9O percent of the titania content of the ore was recoverable and that approximately 90 percent of the iron could be recovered as a metallic-iron powder. Tahawus magnetite from the Maclntyre mine at Tahawus, N. Y., was successfully treated as follows: (1) The ore was roasted at 1,050° to 1,080° C. with carbon and soda ash, thereby reducing the iron to metal sponge and retaining the titania in the slag. (2) The metallic iron was separated, after wet grinding, by magnetic or gravity means. (3) The slag fraction was air-roasted at 850° C. and leached with NaOH to recover Na3VO4. (4) The leached solids received a dilute-H2SO4 leach to remove interfering impurities, chiefly Na2O and SiO2. (5) Titania was dissolved from the leached solids of step (4) by a H2SO4-bake followed by a water leach. (6) Titania was precipitated by seeding and boiling the resulting solution. The spent liquor was used for the dilute-H2SO4 leach in step (4). The following scheme was found to be technically feasible for recovering other byproducts of the process. (1) The gelled filtrate from the dilute-acid leach step was washed and dehydrated to produce a commercially acceptable silica gel. (2) The wash liquor containing sulfates of Na2O, Al2O3, Fe2O3, and TiO2 was combined with the highly alkaline filtrate from the wet-grind and metallic iron-separation steps, precipitating iron and titanium hydroxides, which were separated for special treatment. (3) Anhydrous Na2SO4 and Al2O3?3H2O were recoverable from the alkaline filtrate from step (2) by evaporation and carbonation, respectively, and the barren liquor was recycled to the magnetic-separation step.

Tan investigation described in this paper deals with the development of high-temperature alloys of the Konel series over a considerable period of time at the Research Laboratories of the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Co. The word "Konel" has been coined to designate a class of alloys which are essentially nickel-cobalt-iron with other elements added, usually in small quantities. Most of these alloys contain titanium, usually about 2.5 per cent. The main consideration related to strength at high temperatures but the thermionic characteristics of the alloys was also of considerable importance. It is, however, with the mechanical properties at elevated temperatures that we are herein concerned. Much attention has also been devoted to their age-hardening characteristics. There is little need to stress the utilitarian aspect of this subject, as it has been discussed frequently. Alloys exhibiting superior properties at normal or elevated temperatures rapidly find many suitable applications. There may be some question, however, as to what constitutes a "superior alloy, " or an alloy that may have good service possibilities at high temperatures. The problem is complex and various means have been employed to predict the useful life that may be expected of a material. In recent years the "creep limit" has been used as the best means of evaluation. Such tests necessarily are prolonged and hence collection of data is very slow. In a general survey of many alloys therefore the creep test is not desirable and recourse must be had to much shorter time tests in order more rapidly to select alloys which appear to show promise. For this reason the present survey has been made using the high-temperature tensile test and a bend test developed by Howard Scott.1 In the tensile test the conditions have been standardized for all tests, so that values obtained are at least comparable, one alloy with another, although the absolute values recorded merely indicate the mechanical properties at the given temperature under a definite rate of loading.

Gypsum, the dihydrate form of calcium sulfate, has a history of usefulness to man dating back several thousand years, and a worldwide industry has been built on the mining and processing of this versatile industrial mineral. However, anhydrite, the other prin¬cipal calcium sulfate mineral, has very limited use, so much so that separate statistics for it are not always kept, but are usually included with those for gypsum. Although often found in close association, the two minerals have important chemical differences in that anhydrite is the anhy¬drous form of calcium sulfate (CaSO4) whereas gypsum is the dihydrate (CaSo4.2H20). These two molecules of combined water result in significant differences in hardness, density, and solubility of the two minerals. Of most importance, however, is the difference in thermal properties wherein gypsum, upon the application of a modest amount of heat, can be converted to the hemihydrate of calcium sulfate (CaSO4 '21H20) or plaster of paris, an intermediate product upon which is based over 90% of the value of all calcium sulfate end products. Anhydrite, on the other hand, is inert at these temperatures and its uses have been limited to only those few cases where calcium sulfate in the anhydrous form may have an advan¬tage. The earliest known use of gypsum plaster dates back some 5000 years to the time of the Pharaohs of Egypt who had discovered that gypsum rock, when exposed to fire, broke down into a powder which, when mixed with water, would form a putty that could be plastered on a rough mud brick or stone wall to make a smooth finish. It was used down through the centuries in a limited way for ornamental purposes, but did not achieve wide acceptance because of the quick (25 to 30 min) setting or hardening time which made it difficult to use. The first real understanding of gypsum chemistry was developed in France about 1755, and the gradual growth of its present utilization dates from that time. In the United States, the first utilization of gypsum was to grind it to a fine material for use as a soil conditioner at about the time of the Revolutionary War, and the term land plaster for ground gypsum was coined and has remained in use. Another cementitious material-lime or calcium oxide-had become the usual plastering material, but by about 1870 a method for retarding the set of gypsum plaster was discovered; today it has almost completely replaced lime as a plastering material. In recent years, gypsum products sold in the United States have reached a total valuation of approximately $2 Gpy as illustrated in [Table 1].

PHYSICAL AND CLIMATIC DIVISIONS. PERU is divided into three regions-the coast, the sierra, or high mountainous region, and the a montana," or forest region of the Amazon basin. The Coast.-The coast is an arid region. No rain falls excepting in the extreme northern part, which borders the Gulf of Guayaquil. There is, however, a slight precipitation in the form of mist (garua), which occurs on the coast hills during the so-called winter months. The aridity of the coast is due principally to the antarctic or Humboldt ocean-current, which, being cold and having a temperature lower than that of the land, absorbs rather than produces vapors. The coast mists occur during the season when the land is relatively cold. Near the Gulf of Guayaquil the antarctic current diverges from the coast, so that in the Tumbes valley and adjacent country the conditions in the summer months are such as produce rains. In the remaining valleys of the coast, agriculture is made possible only by means of irrigation, and is accordingly very limited in extent, although rich and varied. In the northern and south-central portions of the coast, plains extend inland from the sea, while in the southern part there is a coastal plain separated from the Pacific by a range of coast hills. Between the northern and south-central plains, as well as between the south-central and southern, the foothills of the sierra descend to the seacoast. The Sierra.-The sierra embraces the high land dominated by the lofty cordilleras of the Andes. In the southern part of Peru there are two cordilleras, the western and the eastern, which enter from Chile and Bolivia respectively, and inclose between them the Titicaca Lake basin. "The demand for minerals and metals is increasing. Head grades of ore bodies are dropping. Remaining ores are becoming finer grained, more complex, and more logistically challenging. Mineral processing – in particular comminution – already consumes a huge amount of energy. But in 20 years’ time, it will require about six times as much energy as today to meet the world’s mineral demand.Unless we do something different.As minerals professionals, it is our job to find that “something different”. The world is relying on us. Of course, we must look for new breakthrough technologies and techniques. We must find them, and we will find them – most likely in surprising areas.But what if we also already know how to make 30-50% improvements to efficiency? Just by using existing technologies, by applying modern analytical techniques, by custom designing our plants, by applying manufacturing principles, by breaking down our management silos between disciplines.The thing is, industry professionals already know this. Yet – in spite of a lot of intelligent people trying very hard – we just can’t seem to make it happen.This discussion considers why, despite our best efforts, we don’t get the best out of what we already have. Why we are wasting energy and money. Once we understand why, we can set about unlocking that value and improving industry productivity and energy efficiency. We will discuss the role that professionals and volunteer professional organisations like CMP and CEEC can play in catalysing the changes."

The author discusses the promising future of the use of pipelines for transportation of ore slurries over long distances, citing existing installations. Various criteria and factors affecting the use and size of pipelines are considered. Among the factors influencing the use of pipelines are particle size, specific gravity, abrasiveness, minimum velocities, and pumping considerations. Long-distance transportation of solids by hydraulic pipelines holds the promise of great economic benefits. Today within the confines of most mineral processing plants, the moving of solids about in slurry form by pipeline is commonplace, since the method offers great advantages when conditions are suitable. Yet, this method is surprisingly slow in being adopted on a broad scale for transportation of solids over long distances (arbitrarily the term will be applied to one over five miles long). This is especially surprising in view of the successful realization in this country within the last five years of two daring ventures in long-distance solids pipelines. A 72-mile long, 6-in. diam pipeline of the American Gilsonite Co. has been satisfactorily transporting 700 tpd of gilsonite from the mine at Bonanza, Utah, to the processing plant at Grand Junction, Colo., since April 1957. The 108-mile long 10-in. diam pipeline of the Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Co. has been transporting about 4000 tpd of finely crushed coal from the mine at Cadiz, Ohio, to the Eastlake power plant of the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co. on Lake Erie since January 1958. However, besides two projects in the operations of The Anaconda Co. there have been hardly any other significant solids pipeline developments in the minerals industry during the last three years. The two projects are the 14-mile long, 6-in. diam copper concentrate gravity pipeline at Anaconda's El Salvador project in Chile which has been transporting about 800 tpd since January 1959. The second is a 16-in. diam tailings pipeline at the Anaconda Reduction Works, Anaconda, Mont., designed to transport about 20,000 tpd of deslimed flotation tailings for dam building. This pipeline, which is currently undergoing tryout tests and which will be about seven miles in length, will have a maximum of three 20-in. rubber-lined centrifugal pumps in series at the starting point, each developing a maximum of 100 ft of head, to supplement gravity. It is the writer's opinion that the major reason for the hesitation in considering pipeline operations is confusion due to an inadequate understanding of the basic physical principles affecting the slurry flow process by many engineers in the industry. This in turn begets an attitude of fear and trepidation instead of confidence on the part of many management executives, which leads to a minimizing of the advantages and exaggeration of difficulties when considering the possibility of a long-distance solids pipeline. The promotion of better understanding and consequently the promotion of greater confidence in the potentials of long-distance solids pipelines when conditions are suitable is thus the main purpose of this article. To this end, after considering several examples of the possibilities for solids pipelines in the minerals field, the relative significance of the major factors affecting pulp flow, and some major aspects of slurry pumping will be discussed on a general qualitative level. Then a brief outline of the semi-empirical quantitative methods developed to date for estimating slurry flow behavior will be presented. SOME POSSIBILITIES To give an idea of the magnitude of the possible economic benefits, it should be interesting to mention briefly some of the projects currently under consideration and to suggest some likely future possibilities. At Anaconda's El Salvador Project in Chile (Fig. 1) it is eventually planned to extend the existing 14-mile pipeline by another 60 miles to bring the copper concentrates down to the coast of the Pacific Ocean. It is now generally conceded that coal is the product of deposition and transformation of debris of forests and swamps.29 Ample data are available to illustrate the metamorphosis of biochemical substances through biological action; other data show the progressive regional metamorphism existing in coal beds;25 and numerous examples of change effected by intrusion of igneous dikes into coal deposits have been established.23 However, often the relative importance of the biological and the geological factor in determining the character of the various natural coals is a debatable question. Since both biological and geological factors are ever present in nature, the problem, at first glance, would appear to resemble certain probability problems: specifically the simultaneous toss of two coins, with the biological factor as heads and the geological as tails. The probability is 2:I for the combined effect of both factors, as compared to the exclusive effect of either one, if the a priori probability is the same for each factor. This condition can be analyzed by a thermodynamic treatment of data, which may be obtained from a consideration of pertinent biological, chemical, geophysical and geological facts. Synopsis of Biological and Chemical Facts The biosphere is not sterile; i.e., microorganisms are always present. Microor- ganisms have been established in the ocean deep, under the ice of the polar regions, in the sand of the deserts, and in swamps far below the surface. The various biological media may be acid, neutral, or alkaline, and they may or may not be readily accessible to air. Microorganisms are encountered almost everywhere, except where the temperature is not within the range tolerable by microbial life. Of course, with changing conditions, the type of microorganisms will change. All chemical products of life—proteins, fats, carbohydrates, lignins, waxes, resins— may serve as a habitat of microorganisms. In the decomposition of a medium, some microorganisms macerate organic matter mechanically and remove certain constituents for their own nutrition; others decompose a large part of the organic matter but may leave certain constituents undecomposed. Some attack only certain specific ingredients of the organic matter. All of them build up cell substance. The nitrogen content of the medium largely determines the degree of decomposition. Below 1.7 per cent nitrogen, growth of microorganisms and hence decomposition of organic material is retarded; consequently organic material will accumulate.17,32 Such accumulations of organic material may give coal eventually. Coals differ in type and rank. The nature of the original vegetation and the conditions attending the transformation of the accumulated debris determine the type of coal such as bright, splint, cannel, and algal or boghead coals. Experiments measuring the kinetics of oxidation and making visual observations of the oxidation of approximately 6 g static lead baths containing arsenic, antimony and tin were conducted in the temperature range from 500 to 600 oC. A range of repeatable behaviours were observed, notably: the formation of a coherent, solid oxide layers on pure lead and lead-tin alloys; the formation of liquid oxide droplets during the initial oxidation of lead-arsenic and lead-antimony alloys and the eventual formation of a complete oxide layer covering the entire free surface of these alloys. Thermogravimetric measurements revealed that the rate of oxygen uptake was strongly influenced by the form of oxides being generated at the melt/gas interface. Compared to the rates of oxidation of pure lead, arsenic increased the rate of oxygen uptake throughout the temperature range via the formation of liquid oxidation products. The presence of antimony resulted in a moderate increase in the rate of oxygen uptake as compared to arsenic. Tin was effective in lowering the rate of oxidation even in the presence of arsenic because the oxidation product was always a coherent layer that acted as a physical barrier to oxygen transport to the underlying alloy.

Port Gaspé is located on the back side of Gaspé bay and is protected by a natural sand barrier with a length of 2,5 km, from which it got its name, Gaspé Sandy Beach (1). Since 1904 the Gaspé region had a deep water wharf, initially very different, in fact, from the one existing just before the recent reconstruction (2). This wharf with a length of 228 m and a width of 23 m was build of timber cribs. The outside walls of these cribs had been doubled with a wooden wall, creosote impregnated to provide resistance to decay and to the attack of marine organisms (limnorias) (3). Fifteen years ago the upper part of the wood construction had to be removed, because of progressing rottenness and was replaced by an L-shaped reinforced concrete structure (4).

Keywords: thermodynamic, Ni-Co alloy powders, composition, fibrous The mathematics model of Ni(II)-Co(II)-C2O42?-NH3?H2O-H2O of thermodynamic equilibrium system has been developed theoretically according to the law of conservation of mass and the law of simultaneous equilibrium, and the logarithm concentration-pH (log[Me2+]T-pH) diagrams of this system have been made. The effect of ligand and pH value was studied. Two issues in coprecipitation route to synthesize fibrous nickel-cobalt alloy precursor powder, com-position and morphology which are a first priority, are addressed based on thermodynamic analysis and experiments. The results show that suitable pH value range of coprecipitation of nickel ions and cobalt ions in theory can be obtained to maintain fibrous, excellent compositonal homogeneity and stoichiometry in coprecipitation products. Experimental demonstration is also carried out.

The need for more and better basic thermodynamic data for the oxides of many of the rare metals is evident to anyone who attempts thermodynamic calculations involving these substances. In continuation of a Bureau of Mines program to meet this need, this paper reports new experimental values of the heats of formation at 298.15° K. of the hexagonal crystalline variety of germanium dioxide and germanium dioxide glass. The values were obtained by means of combustion calorimetry and sodium hydroxide-solution calorimetry. The calorimetric results also made possible the derivation of values for the heat and entropy of fusion of hexagonal germanium dioxide at its melting point. The newly measured data were combined with previously known entropy and high-temperature heat content values to obtain heats and free energies of formation of germanium dioxide (in the hexagonal crystalline, glassy, and liquid states) over the temperature range from 298.15° to 2,000° K.

The identification of the major subsidence areas in the Eastern Kentucky Coal Field has been made to distinguish the subsidence phenomena on the basis of geographical location. Further, this identification process is based upon selected critical geological, topographical, and mining features in the coal fields. The proposed identification of the regions is derived from a comparison of the subsidence potential in a particular area. The most likely severe subsidence areas are compared to those with the probable low subsidence severity. The combination of certain geological and mining parameters involved allows for the derivation of a classification of the subsidence potential.

Application of required energies into the rig design can have a dramatic impact upon productivity. Computer modeling of these production variables has led to changes in design with values closely approaching actual field data. Knowledge of these required energies can also specify the proper drilling technique to the application. With this knowledge, productivity-to-cost ratios can be determined with the most efficient option chosen.

As the chief field of the gold dredging industry in Otago is the district traversed by the Molyneux River (called above Cromwell the Clutha) and its tributaries, a brief reference to the geology of that region and the origin of its alluvial gold will not be out of place. The prevailing rocks are metamorphic schists, chiefly mica and quartz schists, pr.obably of Silurian age. Though these rocks do not contain many payable quartz reefs, gold appears to be distributed in small quantities all through them,chiefly associated with the quartz lamime and lenses. The river drift, however, contains numerous pebbles of quartzite, quartzoze conglomerate, and fme-grained slate. Seeing that these rocks are hardly known to occur in situ within the watershedof the Molyneux River, though Devonian and carboniferous rocks of similar character occur to the north-east and south-west, it seems probable that the schists were at one time overlaid by carboniferous and Devonian rocks, and that these have been removed by denuding agencies. Be this as it may, it is certain that the schists themselves have been greatly eroded by the action both of water and of ice, and that the resulting drifts have themselves, in many cases, been sorted and re-assorted by the same agents.Consequently the drifts are very varied in character and often developed on a grand scale. In geological age they vary from Early Tertiary (though some may be older) to Recent.
