Nowadays, hard carbides have found various industrial application in the manufacture of cutting and drilling tools as well as metal forming devices. About 60% of the world tungsten production is consumed in the manufacture of hard carbide pieces. Regarding the high economic value of hard carbide components, i.e., Ni, Co, TaC, TiC, and WC, their recovery from scrap species is attracting much interest. In the current research, the cobalt and tungsten content were recovered from scrap cemented carbide pieces through the application of high voltage electrolysis in nitric acid media. By this method, cobalt and tungsten were initially recovered as cobalt nitrate and tungstic acid, respectively. The precipitate of tungstic acid was calcined at 800ºC after being washed twice with distilled water. A pure tungstic oxide was obtained. The effects of current density, electrolyte concentration, speed of agitation, and the surface area of the anode on the efficiency of the electrolysis process were investigated. The optimum conditions of current density of 1500 A/m2, an acid concentration of 1.5 M, and a cell temperature in the vicinity of 60 to 80ºC were obtained. At the optimum conditions, an acceptable rate of collapse for the anodic carbide pieces of about 3.1 g/h was achieved, which remained constant up to the completion of the recovery process without any passivation .

Ilmenite, in its natural form, is an inactive mineral from which the selective removal of iron is rather difficult. The reactivity of ilmenite. so that it can be leached with dilute hydrochloric acid, can be enhanced by chemical reduction in solution using a suitable metal as a reducing agent. The present paper aims at the evaluation of an Egyptian ilmenite ore for the production of synthetic rutile by direct leaching with hydrochloric acid in presence of iron powder. In this process, the titanium and iron contents are dissolved; meanwhile, the dissolved titanium is hydrolyzed and re-precipitated leaving mainly iron in solution. Leaching conditions were optimized to obtain less iron in the final solid product. Addition of sufficient amount of iron powder during leaching reduces the dissolved Fe3+ to Fe2+ and reduces the dissolved Ti4+ to Ti3+. The creation of Ti3+ in solution is assumed to have a role in dissolving the ferric iron and hence increasing the reactivity of the ilmenite ore. Synthetic rutile of about 90% TiO2 and 0.77% Fe2O3 was obtained from ore with a grain size 100% passing 200 mesh and a 5-hour leach time with 20% HCl at boiling temperature (110°C) and 0.11 g iron powder / g ore.

The effects of CaF2 and ilmenite on dissolution rate and diffusivity of CaO in calcium alumino-silicate based slag in a temperature range of 1500 ? 1600 ºC were studied by using the rotating disk/cylinder technique. The effect of rotation speed on the rate of dissolution in the base slag indicated that mass transfer in liquid slag played a significant role in controlling the dissolution. At a constant rotation speed, the effect of 5 wt% addition of fluxes tothe slag on the dissolution rate was investigated at various temperatures. While CaF2 had the highest effect, addition of ilmenite increased the rate of dissolution significantly. The diffusivity of lime in these slags was quantified using the dimensionless mass transfer correlations for rotating disk/cylinder in the melt. The diffusivity values were deduced using the data on dissolution rate and solubility of lime in the slags. The measured diffusivity in base slag at 1500 C was found to be about 1.32 10-5 cm2/s and increased to 3.07 10-5 cm2/s at 1600 °C. Addition of 5wt% CaF2 increased the diffusivity by a factor of 3 to 5, while 5wt% ilmenite increased the diffusivity by a factor of 2 to 3 in the temperature range of 1500 to 1600 ºC. The two examined fluxes reduced the activation energy of diffusion.

A laser flash method has been applied to obtain the thermal diffusivity values of Zr55Al10Ni5Cu30 alloy in the liquid, glassy, crystallized and supercooled liquid states. The electrical resistivity of this particular alloy was measured in the glassy, and crystallized states by a direct current four probe technique. A specific heat of Zr55Al10Ni5Cu30 alloy was also determined by a differential scanning calorimeter in the glassy state. On the other hand, thermal diffusivity values for two alloys of Zr60Al15Ni25 and Zr65Al7.5Cu27.5 were measured in the crystallized and liquid states. The thermal diffusivity values of three Zr-based alloys in the liquid state are summarized in the linear equations with positive temperature dependency and it is noted that the lower the thermal diffusivity values of Zr-based alloys at liquidus temperature, the lower the critical cooling rate to obtain metallic glass phase becomes. The thermal diffusivity values of Zr-based alloys were compared with those of Pd-based alloy case. These results suggest that thermal diffusivity of alloy liquids might be an indicator of the glass-forming ability of Zr-based and Pd-based alloys.

"Due to mechanical/ electrical failure in the C.C. line or inadequate availability of molten steel from coming ladle, sometimes one/two outlets of a multi-strand tundish in continuous casting unit is closed. Closing any of the outlets affects the flow distribution inside the tundish which in turn governs the quality of steel coming out. Hence it is important to study which of the outlets should be closed to have proper results in terms of flow behavior and inclusion removal inside the tundish. Present study aims at finding the effect of closing one or two outlets on flow behavior and inclusion removal in a multi strand tundish. It was found that closing the near outlet (outlet near to the inlet) increases the inclusion removal tendency than closing the other two outlets in a six-strand billet caster tundish (only three outlets are considered because of symmetry).IntroductionContinuous casting process transforms molten metal into solid on a continuous basis. This process is the most efficient way to solidify large volumes of metal into simple shapes for subsequent processing [1]. Molten metal is tapped into the ladle from furnaces. From the ladle, the hot metal is transferred via a refractory shroud (pipe) to a holding bath called a tundish. The tundish allows a reservoir of metal to feed the casting machine while ladles are switched, thus acting as a buffer of hot metal as well as smoothing out flow, regulating metal feed to the moulds and cleaning the metal [2]."

"Anaerobic digestion is being taken seriously because of increasing concerns about the environmental hazards of wastes. The production of biogas, as an alternative source of energy was investigated in a designed and fabricated 200litre biogas reactor. The digester was operated on a batch-fed basis, and the feed stock was cassava waste which is readily available in Nigerian farms. The main aim was to explore other renewable sources as a means of less dependence on fossil fuels. A total of 1.94dm3/60kg waste of biogas was produced in 40 days of hydraulic retention time (HRT) with the average yield of 0.048dm3/day. The gas burned with a bluish colour indicating presence of methane (CH4). Temperature during the period of experiment varied between 27 and 330C. The pH of the slurry after the experiments averaged 3.21.1. INTRODUCTIONAnaerobic digestion and biogas production are promising means of achieving multiple environmental benefits and producing an energy carrier from renewable resources (Borjesson and Berglund, 2005).Biogas is one of the by-products of anaerobic decomposition of organic matter by microorganisms, mainly bacterial, a process referred to as anaerobic digestion.Biogas is produced by the process of anaerobic digestion of organic material by anaerobes. Biogas can be produced either from biodegradable waste materials or by the use of energy crops fed into anaerobic digester.Biogas, also called digester gas typically refers to methane produced by the fermentation of organic matter including manure, wastewater, sludge, municipal solid waste or any other biodegradable feedstock under anaerobic conditions. The content of biogas varies with the material being decomposed, and the environmental conditions involved. The gas generally composes of methane, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, hydrogen, and hydrogen sulphide (Anunputtikul and Rodtong, 2004). Potentially, all organic waste materials contain adequate quantities of the materials essential for the growth and metabolism of the anaerobic bacterial in biogas production."

Some of these hospitals is ISO 9000-14000 certified. "Human society evolved from an agricultural to industrial and, subsequently, to a service society. As the resource requirements for each stage of this development differ, trends of metal and energy consumption are related to shifts in society. The increase pattern of supplemental energy is similar to that of mineral production throughout the world. Low positive and stable long-term increasing occurred before 1950, whereas they increased quickly after 1950, especially between 1950 and 1973. A substantial decline in· the growth of energy and mineral production began in 1973 and lasted until the early 1980s. Production of energy resources has recently begun to increase again at a high growth rate in the world. Observing the consumption trends of energy and key metals, it is clarified that increasing patterns can be thought in three stages.IntroductionHuman society evolved from an agricultural to industrial and, subsequently, to a service society. "The carbochlorination of several silica materials was carried out in the temperature range from 900 °C to 1200 °C. In this study, silica oxides and gaseous chlorine with carbon as reductant were used. The optimal carbon silica mole ratio in different temperature was calculated by Factsage software and the results showed that the optimal values are 1.2, 1.4, 1.6, 1.8 at 900 °C, 1000 °C, 1100 °C, 1200 °C, respectively. According to the experiments, the chlorination ratios of several silica materials were increased with temperature increasing. In the same temperature, the chlorination ratio of diatomite is the maximum and the chlorination ratio reaches 79%% when C/SiO2 reaches 3 at 1100 °C.1, IntroductionPolycrystalline silicon is the main material to manufacture the silicon polished section, solar battery[1] and high purity silicon wafers[2], also which is the most basic function material of semi-conductor industry, electronic information industry and solar photovoltaic battery industry[3]. The conventional manufacturing process of polycrystalline silicon would be divided into three parts: the improved Siemens method, which was introduced and became the main process to produce the polysilicon products in China. Silane method and fluidized bed method. Silicon tetrachloride and chlorosilans have been employed as by-products in several fields like electronic, telecounications and metallurgy[4-6]• At present, the main applications of silicon tetrachloride include production of trichlorosilane by catalytic hydrogenation, synthesis of fumed silica and ethyl orthosilicate, production of optical fiber grade silicon tetrachloride.The conventional routes for the silicon tetrachloride production have been reported, including the direct chlorination and the chlorination process of ferrosilicon, abandon catalyst and silica[7]."

"The copper ISASMELT™ process has evolved over more than a quarter of a century and can now be considered mainstream, with single furnaces producing more than 340,000 tpa of copper in matte. The next evolutionary step for the ISASMELT™ technology is to directly challenge the dominance of the Peirce-Smith converter by the implementation of a continuous copper converting process on a commercial scale. The present work describes the status of the continuous converting process – ISACONVERT™.Continuous converting has been performed successfully in pilot scale ISACONVERT™ plants, where operating results have verified the predictions of fundamental research and reinforced the underlying confidence in the design parameters. From a matte feed rate of 250 kg/hr, a calcium ferrite slag and a low-sulfur blister have been produced. Design is now complete for the first commercial application of the ISACONVERT™ process. The present paper describes the status of ISACONVERT™ by summarising results of recent pilot plant tests and describing the first commercial plant design."

Bacterial oxidation technology has the ability to selectively attack sulphide minerals. Selectivity allows oxidation of more reactive minerals and the extraction of valuable metals while leaving the bulk of the sulphide component unreacted. Partial oxidation can be used on arsenopyrite to recover gold and for the leaching of base metals, such as copper and nickel, from pyritic ore and concentrate without generation of large quantities of acidic iron solution, which must be neutralized. Thus, rejection of pyrite during the oxidation process can considerably reduce treatment costs. Acid generation in tailings dams would be minimal, compared with most Thiobacillus cultures, as the optimum growth temperature of Bactechts culture is above ambient.

Lead smelting at Cookson Industrial Materials was formerly carried out using a combination of Blast and Reverberatory Furnaces. In the late 70' s these furnaces were replaced by two 20 tonne capacity Rotary Furnaces. This furnace type has proved to be more flexible in the range of feedstock that can be processed, including lead drosses, battery plate and even whole batteries. High rates of production have been achieved whilst attaining a good level of environmental control. The majority of the sulphur in the feedstock can be fixed by use of appropriate fluxes.

This paper provides an overview of some of the key issues in design of smelter gas handling systems, with particular reference to sulphide smelting plants. In both primary smelting and converting. gas handling and treatment systems often represent the major capital cost component. There is also ample evidence that poor system design can be a major cause of smelter down time, lost production and unforeseen high maintenance costs. The paper discusses these issues and offers guidance for improved design.

"The purpose of this work was to study the reutilization of the steelmaking dust, derived from steel production in the electric arc furnace (EAF), in iron ore sintering process aiming zinc elimination. In each sintering process were collected sintered samples, these materials were analyzed by chemical analysis using atomic absorption spectrophotometry in order to determine the zinc content. Samples of not sintered mixtures were also characterized by chemical analysis aiming to determine the initial amounts of zinc, i.e. in order to check the zinc amounts present in the mixture before the sintering process. The comparation among the zinc contents of samples sintered and not sintered allowed to determine the elimination of zinc during the experiments. Results showed that the zinc elimination in the process is proportional to the ratio reducer/waste. The zinc removal was lower when the reducer/waste ratio was decreased.IntroductionThe electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) is a residue generated in the steelmaking process using electric arc furnace. Aproximately 30% of all steel produced (in the year 2009) was obtained through electric arc furance (EAF). In the United States of America the percentage of this process in the total crude steel production was about 62% in 2009, while in 2000 this percentage was only 47% [1].The iron ore sintering is a process that reuses wastes generated in metallurgical industries. However, the materials used must be physical and chemical characteristics compatible with the blast furnaces.The quantity of zinc, cadmium, chrome and other metals present in the EAFD depends on the quality of the scrap used to feed the EAF and the type of steel that it is been made [2,3]. The reuse of EAFD waste is interesting to steelmaking processes because of its iron content. However the presence of zinc inside a blast furnace is undesirable since the zinc oxide can be deposited on the blast furnace walls and in the drivers of gas output, interrupting the flow. Another part of the zinc oxide can form deposits on the refractory lining of the blast furnace [4,5]."

Fundamentals of blast furnace smelting of low grade copper and precious metal scrap and residues are reviewed with emphasis on emission control, by-products produced, slag cleaning for high recovery of metal values and the evolution of an off-gas system to eliminate hydrocarbons that result from decomposition of plastics in the blast furnace- charge. Problems with tin, antimony and nickel in the smelter-refining cycle are discussed.

The function of a process mineralogist in the operation of a copper mine and plant is to assist in the identification and classification of the operation's main throughput. These include ore, concentrates, slag and matte, and to a lesser extent, refined products. In addition, a number of other products not normally thought of in association with mineralogy are examined. These include scales from submersible pumps, failed boiler tubes, acid plant, and shaft furnace; characterization of inclusions in failed compressor gear teeth as well as in copper rod; and flue dusts from a smelter, air transported particulates and coatings on passive copper anodes in the refinery. Techniques and equipment required for these studies include simple hand magnets to the high intensity Isodynamic separator, visual examination to electron microscopes, x-ray equipment, DTA, IR, heavy liquid separation, and contracted services of custom laboratories. Several examined products from Magma Copper Company have been selected to illustrate the range of techniques and equipment required by a process mineralogist.

"The extraction and separation of nickel, cobalt and copper were investigated with a solvent impregnated resin which was produced from UX84-I and XAD-4. The extraction behavior of metals with the solvent impregnated resin is similar to that with solvent extraction. The extraction ability of solvent impregnated resin improves when using finer particle resin and with a higher concentration of extraction solvent.IntroductionSolvent extraction is well known-as a method for separation of metallic elements in solution. However there are problems with intermediate phase and solvent loss. Ion exchange resin is also used in hydrometallurgy, but it is not fit for separating a large quantity of metals. Amberlite XAD-4 resin is known as a absorption agent of organic matter in water. It is expected that the resin which has the ability of extracting metals can be made by absorbing organic extractant on XAD-4 resin In this study, solvent impregnated resin (SIR) was produced from LIX84-I and XAD-4, and extraction and separation of nickel, cobalt and copper were conducted using SIR. The extraction properties of SIR were investigated, and a comparison between ordinary solvent extraction and SIR was made.Experimental ProcedureAmberlite XAD-4 was used as absorption resin for the organic extractant in this study. The physical properties of XAD-4 are shown in Table I. Amber lite XAD-4 has a large surface area and shows good ability to absorb organic matter in water, but the: resin does not have the ability of exchanging metallic ion."

"Decarburization phenomena on the surface of liquid iron have been simulated by numerical method and the results were compared to the experimental data. During the DeC process in a converter, a large amount of splashed droplets are generated from the top surface of the bath and consequently the reaction surface area is increasing tremendously. Since the decarburization mainly occurs at the interface, it is important to understand the reactions on the liquid iron droplets. The flow and species concentration fields around liquid droplets taking into account the reaction of carbon with oxygen at the interface were calculated by a commercial CFD code FLUENT which solving multiphase Navier-Stokes equation with Volume Of Fluid method, species transport equations and energy transport equation. The initial carbon concentration was fixed to 4 wt% and the concentrations of oxygen in the atmosphere were varied from 5 to 50 wt%. As comparing the numerical calculation with experimental data written in the reference, the results have a good agreement for decarburization rate.IntroductionIn a primary steelmaking process, one of the main functions is to decarburize from hot metal and the 4% of carbon is decreased to about 0.5% of carbon. Even though there are some possible reactions leading to the removal of carbon from hot metal, the main reaction occurs on the free surface by direct oxidation of carbon at the gas-liquid interface with producing the carbon monoxide gas. In many metallurgical processes involving a jet impinging onto a steel bath surface, especially in a Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) converter, it is important to understand the behavior of molten iron droplets splashing out of the steel. The iron droplets are generated by an oxygen or air jet blowing and it increases the total surface area of liquid iron tremendously. Since the decarburization reaction is mainly affected by the surface area, it is necessary to verify the decarburization phenomena around the splashed droplets from liquid iron in order to allow an analysis ofBOF process possible."

In carboxylate collector flotation of bastnasite from other semisoluble salt type minerals such as barite various modifiers must be added in order to achieve selective flotation. One such modifier is a lignin sulfonate. It may function in part by acting as a sequestrant for metal ions present, preventing autoactivation in the system by metal ions derived from the minerals themselves. It also functions as a depressant for both bastnasite and barite, chemisorbing on both. However, it is shown that the lignin sulfonate functions as a much stronger depressant for barite than for bastnasite. It is suggested that the; strong depressing action on barite is related to a good fit of the sulfonate into the barite structure.
