Recent accidents in the United States underground Coal Mines and the on-going carnage in Underground Chinese Coal Mines has shown the danger associated with the lack of communication infrastructures in an underground environment. The US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) have introduced legislation that states all Underground Coal Mines must have two-way voice and personnel tracking capabilities by 2009. If Coal Mining companies are being forced to deal with this problem Tunneling Companies will not be far behind. This paper will examine current practices and best case technology to deal with these issues.

Metallic magnesium is mostly used in lightweight alloys in order to decrease fuel consumption in automotive applications. Several different production processes are currently used worldwide, and the magnesium production scenario is changing rapidly, with Chinese production increasingly dominating the world market. For the purpose of this paper, a novel approach to Life Cycle Assessment was applied, in which Material Flow Accounting and energy-based methods (Embodied Energy, Exergy and Emergy Analyses) are integrated and complemented, with a detailed description of the environmental hazards associated with emissions from all the different processes.

The paper highlights development of tunneling methodology in the UK during the years 1990-2000 using the example of two major tunneling contracts where there solution of difficult tunneling problems during construction has benefited the industry as a whole. The paper deals with specific difficulties on two Contracts. The London Water Ring Main 80 kms (50 miles) long tunnel average internal diameter 2.54 m (9 ft4 in) and the Brighton Stormwater Tunnel 5.2 km (3.2 miles) long tunnel with an internal diameter of 6 m (19 ft 8 in). The results of human endeavour and technological innovations will demonstrate the giant strides made in tunneling methodology in the last decade of the 20th Century.

The Arrowhead Tunnels Project represents the final portion of a 70 km (44-mile) long water conveyance facility that will bring up to 28 m3/sec (1,000 ft3/sec) of water into Southern California. The 13 km (8-mile) tunneling project is well underway and consists of two, 5.8 m (19-foot) diameter TBM bores through extremely variable geological conditions. The tunnels lie near the base of the San Bernardino Mountains and several significant faults including the San Andreas Fault run within one kilometer (0.6 miles) of the tunnel alignment. Numerous other significant faults cross the tunnel alignment and water pressures in the tunnel have been recorded as high as 20 bar (300 psi). This paper describes some of the problems and challenges encountered and the solutions implemented to advance the two hybrid TBMs under conditions that ranged from hard rock with no water inflows to full-face granular material under 10-bar pressure and in excess of 32 l/sec (500 gpm) inflows. Due to the range and severity of ground and water conditions actually encountered, the Owner-Contractor-Designer team eventually found that adjusting the means and methods to be more responsive—virtually on a day-by-day basis—was needed to suit the conditions

Since Sept. 11, 2001, the author has been asked by several mining companies and mining publications to share some of his insights on how the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center (WTC) and Pentagon might affect the mining industry globally. Until now, the author has been reluctant to express his thoughts in a publication that could possibly fall into the hands of terrorists and give them some ideas that they may not have been previously considering. However, the author discussed the contents of this article with several friends and acquaintances in the international intelligence community. They said that nothing commented on here is new to the terrorists. Potential terrorist targets Sources within the worldwide intelligence gathering community have told the author that current intelligence data indicates that it is likely that the Islamic fundamentalist groups responsible for the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001will likely be directing their effort at foreign business entities. Any overseas or any domestic businesses of highly visible companies that are part of the anti-terrorism alliance should consider themselves a potential target.

The Mid-Tennessee Zinc (MTZ) mines, comprised of the Gordonsville, Elmwood, and Cumberland sites, last operated 4 years ago and are undergoing rehabilitation to begin production in 2008. The mines utilize a random room-and-pillar mining method that results in complex ventilation networks. Upon decommissioning, the mechanical ventilation units were removed and disposed of and several shafts sealed. In an effort to re-open the mines and operate in compliance with imminent Mine Safety Health and Administration (MSHA) diesel particulate matter (DPM) regulatory limits of 160TC µg/m3, a new ventilation system was required. The new ventilation system was developed primarily based on the diesel equipment required to meet production. Particular emphasis was placed on the DPM, diesel equipment utilization, main fan sizing, and fan locations to enable the mines to meet MSHA?s ventilation requirements in a cost efficient manner.

ntroduction As the gold mining industry continues to develop in the Dominican Republic and Haiti, more deposits will undoubtedly be discovered that will be amenable to development. The Pueblo Viejo gold mine is currently in operation in the Dominican Republic. It has become an important component of that country's economy. Pueblo Viejo output is important to the government as a foreign currency earner. It is also said to be among the world's more successful gold mines. But, while Pueblo Viejo is successful, no other major gold discoveries have been made in recent years. Therefore, alluvial deposits of gold have caught the attention of geologists on the Island of Hispaniola. In the past four years, exploration and investigation of alluvial deposits have been initiated in both the Dominican Republic and Haiti. This type of activity is expected to continue over the next few years. Alluvial gold mining is rudimentary gold washing, done mostly by farmers. It is an old tradition, dating back at least 100 years, and is done by small, independent, or community farming villages in the mountains and plains of the Dominican Republic. Investigations in the DR Recently, alluvial gold investigations have been undertaken in well known locations of the Dominican Republic. One is in the Villa Altagracia area. Here, the terraces and gravels of the Haina River basin were examined, test-pitted, and assayed by Minera Altagracia, a local Dominican mining group. Results led to a new investigation by the state-owned Rosario Dominicana (RD), the company that mines the gold at Pueblo Viejo. Rosario tested areas previously investigated by Minera Altagracia. RD could not define the type of concentration that could justify an industrial-scale type of exploitation. The Haina River placers are located in the flats and valleys of Central Dominican Republic. They are classified as small-scale type of operations where local cooperatives can do the traditional gold washing. It is not now considered a dredgable project for a mining company. The next alluvial gold investigation was undertaken by the Dominican Department of Mines and others in an area of some 700 km2 (270 sq miles) in the northeast near Miches. Farmers have been washing gold in streams and excavating pits in various areas, particularly La Mina and have made a living. Government geologists panned several hundred streams and river tributaries. They also washed material from deep excavations. The results, however, were negative insofar as locating alluvial gold concentrations suitable for large-scale or industrial-scale exploitation. The most favorable locations were the terraces along the Jayán and Cuarón Rivers in the area of Miches. But the grade od concentration is poor. Actually, only traces of gold were found in these

Coal mine ground control is the science of the application of rock mechanics principles to coal mining operations. More acceptance of ground control techniques by the US coal mining industry has been seen in the 1980s. It has been demonstrated many times that a proper ground control design is key to a successful coal mining operation. However, numerous in-mine applications of various ground control techniques by the author indicate that cur¬rent techniques need improvement. The biggest problem in coal mine ground control is that miners are dealing with materials of rapidly varying properties and occurrence. And only the exposed surface can be identified positively. Thus, in attempting to solve the ground control problems, many unknown factors are assumed. Some of these problems deriving from such assumptions are discussed here. Coal pillars There are two types of coal pillars - barrier and chain pillars - depending on the purpose. Barrier pillars are those located between panels or sections or mines. Their objective is to isolate the mined-out effects of one from the other. Chain pillars are characteristic of room-and-pillar mining. They are designed to support the overburden load and protect the surrounding entries and crosscuts. Pillar design is the most popular and, frequently, the only ground control technique employed by coal operators for mine design. There are many pillar design formulae available (Bieniawski, 1983; Peng, 1986). Nearly all consider both size and width/height effects. Specifically, pillar strength decreases with increases in pillar size and increases with increase in the ratio of width to height. However, the manner of those changes varies with investigators. Consequently, the pillar size determined varies considerably from investigator to investigator. And the variation grows much more pronounced as the seam depth increases (Fig. 1). The question, then, is which one should be used? One may say each formula is developed for a particular coalfield. A particular formula may have been used to design a pillar, which has not failed. Does that mean it was over designed? Not necessarily, because no one can confirm its stated "safety factor." Recent case studies (Peng, 1986; Tang and Peng, 1988) show that all pillar formulae are too conservative for chain pillar design in room-and-pillar mines due to the following two problems: • Uncertainty about in situ pillar strength. All formulae employ uniaxial compressive strength of selected samples tested in the laboratory and scaled to that for underground pillars. The scaling factors are not well proven. In situ testings by Bieniawski (1969) suggested that 1.5 m (5 ft) pillars are representative of in situ pillars that, after being tested in various US coal mines, are not universally applicable. • Uncertainty about the actual loading on the pillar. The most frequently used tributary loading theory defines the loading as total overburden weight tributary to each pillar (from roofline to surface). This is too conservative when it applies to coal measure rocks. The overburden consists of layered strata of different stiffness. Many stiffer strata will self-support over small roof spans. Depending on the location of these strata above the coal seam, it will reduce pillar loading in various proportions. It follows that total structural analysis using, for instance, finite element method is more appropriate. It can take into account the interaction of roof and floor strata with coal. Several studies have been conducted on blastability and prediction of fragmentation. The term blastability is used to refer the susceptibility of the rock to blasting and is closely related to fragmentation. Parameters that determine fragmentation by blasting may be divided into two groups. The first group consists of blasting design parameters. The blast design parameters are controllable parameters and determined by the explosive engineers. The burden, spacing between holes, bench height, drillhole diameter, stemming height and explosive density are all design parameters. The second group consists of rock mass parameters that are referred to as uncontrollable parameters. The uncontrollable parameters are physical and mechanical properties of rock and rock mass structure. The strength, modulus of elasticity, density of rock, number of joint sets, joint orientation and joint spacing are among uncontrollable parameters. The rock mass parameters and blast design parameters should be considered together to explain fragmentation process. In this study, a blast database was accumulated to use for multivariate analysis. The blast database contains the blasts performed near Istanbul region quarries and the blasts that were preformed in various mines in the world by the blasting researchers. The cluster analysis was used to separate the blast data into different similarity groups. Group memberships were analyzed and checked by the discriminant analysis. Then, the multivariate regression analysis was used to develop a prediction equation for blast fragmentation for each group. Finally, a validation of the suggested models was performed for various mines. The model comprises blast design parameters, mechanical properties of rock and rock mass structure.

The methodology of quarrying changed significantly in the Indiana limestone industry in the 60 years between Sept. 11, 1941 and Sept. 11, 2001. The former was the date of the Pentagon groundbreaking ceremony, while the latter was when the building was damaged by American Airlines Flight 77. So too, though to a lesser degree, did the machinery and methods used to fabricate the stone. The rededication ceremony on Sept. 11, 2002 marked the end of the Phoenix Project, as the rebuilding effort was named. The story of this remarkable project illustrates what the American construction(and Indiana limestone) industry can accomplish when working toward a common goal.

Over the past 20 years, several soft-ground tunnels have been successfully completed in the Seattle area. These tunnels were built using design-bid-build contracting methods, and have benefited from advancing technologies in exploration, design and construction methods. Owners have utilized various contractual means to share some of the risks that are inherent to tunneling projects. This has helped to foster a competitive bidding environment and to resolve issues related to unanticipated underground conditions in a fair manner. This paper presents case histories of tunnels constructed by King County and the Washington Dept. of Transportation that illustrate a common approach to design and construction issues. The common thread is successful project completion with minor cost changes under the design-bid-build contracting method. Lessons learned from these projects are being applied to the upcoming King County Brightwater Project tunnels, Sound Transit’s Light “Link” Rail tunnels and other tunnel projects.

INTRODUCTION East Side Access (ESA) Contract CQ028 is located in the New York City Borough of Queens. The contract involves construction of a 230-meter (760-foot) long open-cut excavation with a permanent deck supporting Amtrak yard tracks over a semi-circular TBM launch wall on the east end, and the 36.5-meter (120-foot) long Northern Blvd. Crossing on the west end. The Northern Boulevard Crossing will be mined under an existing New York City Transit (NYCT) five-track subway tunnel; Northern Boulevard, a heavily traveled five-lane truck route; and an existing NYCT three-track elevated line; connecting to an existing open-cut shaft adjacent to the existing 63rd Street Tunnel bellmouth. When completed, Contract CQ028 will provide access for future Manhattan and Queens tunnel contracts. The footprint of the open-cut was determined by the geometric requirements of the future Plaza Interlocking facility to be constructed within in another future ESA contract. See Figure 1. This paper discusses design risk mitigations for the key elements of the contract, namely the Northern Blvd. Crossing and the semi-circular TBM Launch Wall. PROJECT OVERVIEW The Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction Company—East Side Access Project for the Long Island Rail Road will provide Long Island commuters with direct access to Manhattan’s East Side via a new rail line between the Harold Interlocking in Queens and Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan. The project connects the unused lower level of the existing tunnel under the East River at 63rd Street to new connecting tunnels in Queens and Manhattan. Contract CQ028 Scope and Construction Schedule This contract consists of the excavation of an open-cut from the east side of Northern Boulevard, through an existing MTA-owned rail yard and into the western limits of Amtrak’s Sunnyside Yard. Mycobacterium phlei has very good potential as a hematite flotation collector. The flotation recovery of hematite is dependent upon the solution pH and concentration of the microorganism. The critical pH for maximum recovery of hematite is around three, which corresponds to the point of zero charge of the microorganism. An excellent correlation between the flotation recovery and bacterial adhesion on hematite is observed. The adhesion of Mycobacterium phlei on hematite can be described by the potential energy of interaction calculations using an extended DLVO theory.

CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics, is, at present, constructing an underground tunnel and cavern network to house a Large Electron Positron (LEP) colliding beam machine. This paper describes the techniques adopted to permit the excavation and temporary support of the access shafts through a series of glacial moraines, at depths of up to 80 m, to reach the bed-rock. Owing to the presence of superficial and deep water-tables, the variable nature of the moraine deposits and, above all, the tight work schedule, a combination of diaphragm walling and ground freezing was employed.

Distinct trends in grinding mill technology have emerged in recent years. In an effort to optimize overall mill performance for the needs of the End User, broad measures of logistical speed, process flexibility, operational risk, and overall costs now exert greater influence on the specification of grinding equipment. As a result, innovative alternatives to conventional grinding mill structures, supports, drives, feed, and discharge configurations are now being offered and selected with greater frequency. This paper investigates these trends in grinding mill technology, utilizing optimization and decision-theory techniques. In particular, the paper considers how specific advances in process design, product engineering, manufacturing techniques, and mining operations continue to relax technological constraints, enabling further mill innovation. In this context, a methodology is presented, illustrating how proper selection and specification of grinding mill components and configuration can target an optimization of the four End-User performance measures listed above.

The economic success and growth of any metropolitan region depends on mobility. Today, mobility between New Jersey and New York is threatened by a transportation system that cannot meet 21st century travel demands. The transportation bottleneck created by the Hudson River threatens the viability of one of the world?s great centers of commerce and culture. Fortunately, there is a solution: The Access to the Region?s Core Mass Transit Tunnel. The US$8.7-billion Mass Tran-sit Tunnel?s (MTT) new two-track line will double commuter rail capacity under the Hudson and create a new, state-of-the-art cavern station in Midtown Manhattan, with wide platforms, high-speed escalators and other features to improve riders? travel experience. The capacity and other benefits of the MTT project will launch a new era of prosperity for the region, just as the Pennsylvania Railroad did almost 100 years ago when it built the existing two, single-track rail tunnels that now form the sole commuter rail link between New Jersey and New York. The existing tunnels run from North Bergen, NJ, under the Hudson River to Pennsylvania Station at 33rd Street in Manhattan. Construction on the MTT, the largest public works project in the United States, is scheduled to start this year and continue through 2017. The MTT is ready to go to construction thanks to a major commitment of financial, engineering, project management and other resources from NJ TRAN-SIT, New Jersey?s statewide mass transit agency, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, a bistate agency that operates the Holland and Lincoln tunnels, the George Washington Bridge and other major transportation facilities in New York and New Jersey. The project is also strongly supported by the state governments of New York and New Jersey, as well as that of New York City. The MTT is New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine?s number one transportation priority.

Mineral exploration is a critical step for success in mining. However, small-scale mining often ignores exploration best practices. This paper introduces the Tichauer-DeTomi Matrix, a tool for assessment of geological uncertainty in small-scale mining. This matrix, which measures the level of compliance of exploration programs in small deposits with industry best practices, has been applied to three small mining projects in Brazil: an artisanal gold mine in the Amazon, a small-scale manganese mining venture in the Northeast, and a small manganese deposit in the Southeast. The application of the matrix resulted in indexes that reflect the actual level of maturity of the mineral exploration program in each project. Therefore, the matrix has shown potential to be an effective tool for assessment of the geological uncertainty remaining in small-scale mineral projects, as well as to identify priority exploration activities for reduction of risks associated with the geological uncertainty. As a risk assessment tool, the TichauerDeTomi Matrix may be helpful in promoting investment and sustained development in and around small mines.

Built-in-place (BIP) refuge alternatives (RAs) are designed to provide a secure space for miners who cannot escape during a mine emergency. Heat and humidity buildup within RAs may expose miners to physiological hazards such as heat stress. To minimize the risk of heat stress, Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), or 30 CFR, mandates a maximum allowable apparent temperature (AT) for an occupied RA of 35 °C (95 °F) (MSHA 2008 [1]). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted extensive research on the thermal environment of occupied RAs intended for use in underground coal mines. NIOSH research has demonstrated that a fully occupied BIP RA can exceed the AT limit by > 5.6 °C (10 °F) in mines with elevated mine strata and air temperatures (Bissert et al. 2017 [2]). In this circumstance, an RA cooling system could provide a solution. This paper provides an overview of test methodology and findings as well as guidance on improving the performance of a cryogenic air system prototype by optimizing the flow rate, increasing the tank storage capacity, and improving the efficiency of the heat exchanger of the cryogenic system. This may enable BIP RAs to meet the 35 °C (95 °F) AT limit in mines with elevated temperatures. The information in this paper is useful for RA manufacturers and mines that may choose to implement a cryogenic air system as a heat mitigation strategy

The main objective of batch grinding modeling is the estimation of the product particle size distribution over time or specific energy input to the mill. So far, the developed analytical methods require often complicated calculations which are timeconsuming. Thus, more simple approaches that allow the reliable prediction of the complete product size distribution need to be developed. In the present paper, an approach, based on the population balance model (PBM), that reliably predicts the product size distribution is proposed. In order to enable this, the simplified form of the fundamental batch grinding equation was transformed into the well-known Rosin–Rammler (R-R) distribution, thus allowing the determination of the breakage rate for each grinding period. A time-dependent breakage rate framework was developed where the traditional linear theory of the PBM is considered a partial case. This approach allows the deviations from the linear theory to be categorized and the degree of the acceleration-deceleration of the breakage rate to be predicted. Modeling results were validated by laboratory grinding studies using two homogeneous materials, quartz and marble, and one heterogeneous, a limonitic laterite. The experimental data revealed that grinding exhibits non-first-order behavior and the degree of deviation from the linear theory depends on the tested material. The reliability of the proposed model was validated with the use of the distribution modulus n, the a value of the breakage rate parameter, and the optimum n values that minimize the sum of the differences between the experimental and estimated particle size distributions.
