INTRODUCTION The increasing concern for the environment may well present far more opportunities than problems for those involved in all phases of tunneling. All too frequently in the past, environmentalists and their concerns have been cast in a negative light, as obstacles to be overcome. Often forgotten is the fact that these same environmental concerns have created a rapidly increasing demand for new tunnels. Tunnels for rapid transit projects, clean water supply, and sewage treatment have been given a boost because of environmentalists' concerns about overuse of automobiles, inadequate water supplies, and improper sewage disposal. Concurrent with increasing use of tunnels to help solve or alleviate some of our environmental problems is an obligation not to create new ones in the process. Concerns which we feel responsible tunnel owners, engineers, and contractors should address themselves to include: (1) Minimum energy consumption, both during construction and in operation of the completed project; (2) proper storage and/or disposal of the excavated material; (3) minimum disruption during the construction process - noise, traffic, unnecessarily unsightly work areas, and possible weakening of foundations of nearby structures; and (4) a finished project consistent with community and environmental goals. We are especially concerned about two things. First, the longrun implications of a project -- what's good for a few people in the short-run may be bad for most of the people in the long-run. The Nordhalde is a waste rock pile resulting from uranium mining near Ronneburg, Germany. The pile contains over 27 million m3 of waste rock. Typical seepage water has a pH of 2.7 and a sulfate concentration of 10,000 mg/L. Geochemical investigations of the Nordhalde from 1993 to 1996 included drillholes, test pits, ABA and metals analyses, column tests, and a detailed review of the construction history of the pile. In 1996, eight drillholes were instrumented for monitoring oxygen and temperature. Monitoring continued for a fill year. Hourly temperature and pressure readings were taken by automated data recorder. Oxygen concentrations were measured three times per week, and periodic gas samples were obtained for complete analysis. The resulting data set is believed to be one of the most comprehensive of its kind. Effects noted elsewhere, such as thermal convection, are evident. However, unlike other data in the literature, the NordhaIde data shows a strong seasonal effect, with convection dominating oxygen transport only in the winter months. Analysis of the data allowed the amount of contaminants associated with ongoing and historical oxidation to be compared, and results were used to assess the potential effectiveness of proposed remediation measures.

The development of a design equation for, and the testing of, a constant- flow airlift pump IS described. The predictions of the new airlift model agree with the results of experiments carried out using riser diameters between 0.025 and 0.300 m, submergence depths between 5 and 10 m, suspension densities between 1000 and 1650 kg/m3, and a solids dg of 70 to 100µm. The predictions o the model also agree with data from the literature for submergence depths that reached 130 m. This airlift model was employed to simulate the pulp flow through a series of tanks, each of which was fitted with an airlift pump to transfer the suspension to the next tank. Particular attention was paid to the riser diameter, submergence of the airlift pump, and control of the air supply to the airlift pump during the simulated operation of a series of tanks. The results of the simulation highlight some design parameters that could affect the efficiency and operation of a plant that employs airlift pumps to transfer suspensions.

The separation and recovery of copper from cyanide solution has been investigated since the early 1900s. The precipitation of copper using sulfide ion was patented in 1911 by Williamson, published by Leaver & Woolf of the USBM in 1931 and Cyanamid in 1960s. The current practice of sulfide precipitation is used in various processes such as “SART" for cyanide regeneration and copper recovery. The precipitation of copper sulfide requires the pH of the clear solution to be in the range of 4-6. The precipitated copper sulfide can be sold to smelters. Alternatively, copper cyanide can be precipitated from clear solutions in the pH range of 2-3. However, selling copper cyanide is challenging because of its cyanide content. Past work has focused on the use of boiling sulfuric acid to convert copper cyanide to copper sulfate as published by Seracini in 1991. This paper describes a simple process to convert copper cyanide to copper oxide using sodium hydroxide at ambient temperatures. The cuprite can be sold to smelters or used as a feed to an electrowinning circuit to produce copper cathodes. The process provides an effective method to recover copper from cyanide solutions with a lower capital requirement.

"Tunnels designed to NFPA 502 are required to withstand the RWS time-temperature curve, more specifically prevent progressive spalling and loss of strength of steel reinforcement. Fire boards or spray-on layers can be effective, however, these solutions have capital and whole-life cost implications. The use of “fire resistant” concrete based on a suitable aggregate with polypropylene fibers has also increased in recent years. This article presents a new methodology for thermal and structural analysis of segmentally lined tunnels, which permits the analysis of project specific fire curves and an assessment of different fire protection strategies. The effectiveness of fire boards is assessed along with whether “fire resistant” concrete alone is a viable means of achieving the required protection. Finally, since NFPA 502 recommends water-based fixed fire-fighting systems for Category C and D tunnels, we discuss the question of how a fixed fire-fighting system should be addressed within the structural design. INTRODUCTION Protecting road tunnels from structural damage and collapse is a key requirement for both life safety and business continuity. Where road tunnels are part of key highway corridors, protecting business continuity is a high priority for owners, operators and the Authority Having Jurisdiction. For existing tunnels, compliance with NFPA 502 may require upgrades with either passive fire protection and/or water-based fixed firefighting systems. For new tunnels, compliance with NFPA 502 requires a combination of good practice in design and fire testing. A water-based fixed firefighting system is a Conditionally Mandatory Requirement1 for Class C and D tunnels, i.e. all tunnels greater than 300m and 1000m long respectively. The basis for fire safety design of new tunnels and assessment of existing tunnels is the worst-case fire scenario. The early beginnings of mining geophysics in Sweden can be traced back to the reign of queen Kristina in the 17th century. The mine compass, consisting of a freely suspended magnetic needle in a casing, was in use certainly by 1640 and probably earlier for locating iron ore deposits. Whether the mine compass was a Swedish invention or not is an unsettled question since the possibility cannot be overlooked that the celebrated Nürnberg compass-makers of the 16th century may have constructed it for the first time(1). Be that as it may, the mine compass was very extensively employed in Sweden for more than two centuries and met with spectacular success in locating magnetic deposits under shallow overburden. Occasionally the diligent prospector would even be rewarded with a pyrrhotitebearing sulphide deposit, as witness many old sulphide-ore pits and some mines still in operation from the 17th and the 18th centuries. The mine compass measured only the orientation of the Earth's magnetic field and not its strength. Although it was improved in construction and sensitivity over the ages, no great strides were made in magnetic prospecting after the initial discovery of the use of the compass until Gauss, omnipresent in 19th century physics and mathematics, showed with the assistance of Weber how the strength of a magnetic field could be determined.

The emphasis will be placed on the macro engineering view of integrated multiple operation plants such as those that typically involve stages of size reduction, sol id-sol id separation, solids storage, chemical reactions involving sol ids, sol ids disposal, etc. The macro engineering view is chiefly concerned with balancing and optimizing the bigger picture of how various unit operations interact technical and economically with each other in an approximate sense rather than how a specific unit operation can be technically described and optimized in detail (micro engineering.)

Consideration is given to the deformation characteristics of the roof formation and the coal seam as determined in the laboratory as well as in the field. Mississippi Valley Type Pb-Zn deposits are widespread in the midcontinent U.S. and have been mined from the 1800's to present. Some tens of thousands of acres of mined land in the Tri-State District have been designated as Superfund sites as a result of surficial mine wastes and ground waters with elevated levels of metals. EPA considers the surficial mine wastes to be hazardous and a major source of acid mine drainage fAMD) that degrades water resources and threatens human health and the environment. To mitigate potential risks at one site near Galena, Kansas, a group of mining companies who had been identified by EPA as Potentially Responsible Parties IPRPs) proposed subgrade disposal of the mining wastes in shafts and subsidence features. However, this proposal was challenged by the Agency on grounds related to AMD and the potential for degradation of ground water quality. The PRP team developed a program of materials characterization, laboratory-scale leaching, and finally large-scale, pilot testing in the field. Static and dynamic leaching tests at both laboratory scale fusing artificial rainwater under both variably and fully saturated conditions) and field scale (using pH 4.5 ground water) showed that the surficial wastes do not produce acidic leachate and are not a long-term source of metals. Laboratory chemical and mineralogical tests show that the mine wastes contain substantial carbonate, but very limited iron sulfides, consistent with the leach test results. EPA "characterization" tests fEP Toxicity and TCLP) compare very poorly with tests simulating the expected leaching conditions. While these tests would classify the surficia1 wastes as "hazardous, they do not characterize the behavior of the high-volume, low-concentration, coarse-grained materials with respect to environments and disposal options of interest. To be meaningful, characterization of mining wastes must be performed in a manner that simulates the environmental conditions that are actually of interest with respect to a specific decision, such as subgrade disposal in the saturated zone.

Today, the coal mining industry is more knowledgeable on the potential negative economic consequences associated with improper management of hazardous substances and various types of solid waste. The practices evaluated during environ-mental audits are discussed and example situations are shared from previous audits of coal mines and analogous situations. The importance of assessing and understanding purchasing, warehousing, safety, maintenance, electrical, operations, and environmental management practices and procedures is highlighted as a key to a successful and practical program. A waste minimization approach is presented including strategies for screening product purchases, product substitutions, and testing and record keeping.

Introduction Millions of tons of coal are shipped by rail each year in the US. Loading those trains efficiently is a topic being studied by coal producers and railroads. Alternatives range from volumetric loadouts to systems that weigh the product, using either belt conveyor scales, track scales, or weighbins. Each system has its proper application and each has pros and cons, depending on the volume, nature, and layout of the specific loading facility. In recent years, a batch weighing system has been developed that offers significant benefits to higher volume operations shipping by a unit train. The Unitrain Loadout System (ULS) features a precision electronic batch weighing system married to a mechanical loadout system by a microprocessor-based digital control system. A batch weighing loadout could be designed using analog electronics or even a mechanical weighbin. But it is the adaption and use of a microprocessor that provides the primary benefits of a unit train loading facility. Those benefits are accurate weight determination, optimum car use, overload prevention, speed in loading, optimum labor use, and documentation of the loading process. Unitrain History The first ULS was erected for iron ore applications in Canada during the 1960s. The first domestic system on coal was installed at Pittsburg and Midway Coal Co.'s McKinley mine at Gallup, NM, in 1978. At present, there are more than 20 Unitrain Loadout Systems in operation worldwide. They are loading minerals, concentrates, and coal. Eleven systems are presently in service or under construction in the US. In the last several years, a number of comparable systems have also been installed. As a result, the concept has been well proven and is now commercially available from several sources. Unitrain Operation The basic operation of a ULS involves loading a unit train with individually weighed batches of coal while it moves slowly under a loadout tower. Typical coal systems are designed to load at rates of 2.7 to 6.3 kt/h (3000 to 7000 stph). The contents of each car can be accurately weighed. This meets the requirements of the National Bureau of Standards Handbook No. 44 for static weighing. Also, cars can be loaded within very close tolerances. This optimizes railcar usage and prevents overloads. Principal components of the loadout system are the main feed conveyor, the surge bin, surge bin gates, weighbin, weighbin gate, flood loading chute, control room, calibration weights, and hydraulic and electrical systems (Fig. 1). Main feed conveyor: Coal is delivered from a storage area by the main feed conveyor. The conveyor fills the surge bin. It should be capable of conveying coal at the same rate at which it is being loaded. Usually the feed conveyor is equipped with a conveyor scale that can display rate in the control room and control feed to the belt. The surge bin will typically store 227 to 272 t (250 to 300 st) of coal. If the loadout is installed in an over-the-track silo, there is no need for a surge bin. Four double-bladed, hydraulically actuated gates are incorporated into the bottom of the surge bin. These gates open to fill the weighbin. Automatic pre-act points are selected by the control system. They shut these gates as the desired weight is approached. The final amount of coal is added by a single gate that closes. This results in a weighed batch of coal within ± 0.5% of the selected optimum load per railcar. Thus, if loading 91-t (100-st) capacity cars, the system is set to batch up 90.2 t (99.5 st) batches. The rare earth element (REE) industry has sought to develop ore deposits where geologic processes have produced mineralized zones with commercially attractive concentrations. These deposits are extremely uncommon, particularly in the United States. Given the criticality of these materials and the need for a sustainable domestic supply, the current research seeks to leverage the generation and treatment of acid mine drainage (AMD) as an autogenous process that can lead to concentrated REE resources.

Outokumpu Electronics has designed a new on-line coal slurry ash analyzer, based on an instrument developed at Michigan Technological University. The primary goal was to build an accurate instrument at the lowest possible cost. The instrument determines ash content from measurements of X-ray backscatter, iron K, fluorescence, and low-energy y-ray absorption. It is capable of measuring the ash content with a standard error of 1.1% ash over an analysis range of 9-21% ash and 7-22% solids. The analyzer was tested on coals from United States, Poland, Great Britain and the USSR.

Zinc ores were first discovered in Tennessee in 1856 at Jefferson City where a deposit of oxidized ore became known as the Mossy Creek Mine. From that time until 1913 small scale attempts at prospecting and mining were made in various parts of the district. The actual systematic development of the zinc deposits dates from 1913 when the American Zinc Company started operations at Mascot. Six mines are in operation by three companies and a seventh mine is being developed by a fourth company. The total daily production from the field is 11,000 tons of crude ore, which grades from 3 to 6 per cent zinc. Most of the ore bodies are large and ramiform, resembling asyrmetrical networks in which the ore shoots form channel like branches with areas of non-comercia1 rock, called blank islands. Most of the orebodies are adapted to large scale mechanization.

"The McCook Main Tunnel connects Chicago’s Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) Mainstream Tunnel to the McCook Reservoir. The tunnel system consists of a 10 m (33 ft) finished diameter and 490-m (1,600-ft) long hard-rock tunnel constructed from a 27.5-m (90-ft) diameter and 92 m (300 ft) deep main gate shaft. The gate shaft houses six high-head 4.4 x 9 m (14.5 x 29.5 ft) wheel gates installed in the bifurcated and steel-lined section of the tunnel. The tunnel also includes portal and energy dissipation structures as it daylights into the reservoir. Construction of the McCook Main Tunnel in live flow conditions was a challenging task for the McCook Main Tunnel Project participants, the project owner U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), local sponsor Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) of Greater Chicago, designer Black & Veatch and contractor Kiewit Infrastructure Co. (Kiewit). Once completed in two stages in 2017 and 2029, the McCook Reservoir will hold 38 billion L (10 billion gal) of combined sewer overflows (CSO) and flood waters from the city of Chicago and 36 surrounding communities in Cook County, IL The construction of the tunnel system was divided into two contracts. The first contract for the gate and construction access shaft was completed in August 2011. The second contract included tunnel excavation and concrete and steel lining that was completed in September 2014; installation of gates and hydraulic cylinders that was completed in June 2017; and the last major construction activity was the removal of a temporary concrete plug (bulkhead) and lining that tunnel section to bring the overall tunnel and gates system online before Dec. 31, 2017.This article focuses on the installation, testing and commissioning of the high head wheel gates. Hanna has developed three production planning systems to help the mine engineers determine the sequence of mining from available ore supples. The Production Scheduling System was developed to give the staff a tool for long range planning by sequencing the removal of blocks from an open pit property. It was needed to determine the year of removal for each block so that the optimum present-valued pit limits could be established by our pit design program. Since in this type of planning short term grade control is less of a factor than it is in daily or monthly planning, the system gives the program greater control and more latitude in block selection. It permits only full blocks to be taken.

During the last 30 years, a dramatic increase in the supply of byproduct sulfur substantially reduced the share of the market held by Frasch-mined (non-by-product) sulfur in North America. Even though Canadian sulfur production is not discretionary, the geographic remoteness from the large US markets and the high transportation costs associated with delivering sulfur to those markets has meant that Canadian producers act like discretionary producers in many important ways. They have effectively replaced the US Frasch producers as the cost-marginal sulfur source to large US markets. Implications of this change in market structure include more volatile sulfur prices and longer sulfur price recessions.

Developments in the agricultural use of potassium (K) have been based solely on the essential role K plays in crop production. Crop plants cannot complete their normal life cycle if K is deficient or absent. In fact, no essential plant nutrient other than nitrogen is required in greater quantities. Table 1 shows the amounts of K some crops take up from the soil. Although the exact functions of K in the plant are not well known, its primary role seems to be tied to plant metabolism. Potassium is vital to the process of photosynthesis. When K is deficient, photosynthesis declines, but respiration increases. These two K-deficient conditions. . . reduced photosynthesis and increased respiration ... lower the plant's carbohydrate supply, the end result being poor agronomic crop production. Potassium is also essential to several other plant functions, including the following: 1) Protein synthesis. 2) Water use efficiency, through the influence of K on stomata opening and closing, to maintain the turgidity in plant leaf cells. 3) Translocation of heavy metals such as iron and zinc. 4) Ionic balance. 5) Control of enzyme reactions within plants.
