Seismic events and pillar failures observed in two platinum mines in the Rustenburg area, South Africa, were investigated. We studied the sources of approximately 300 largest seismic events recorded in 2009. Moment tensors of these events were estimated from amplitudes and polarities of P- and S-waves. The inverted mechanisms contain isotropic implosive components in many instances. Analyses of uncertainty of the moment tensor solutions confirmed the significance of the implosive component in general. Several documented cases of pillar failure were considered in detail. For each of these a seismic moment tensor was calculated from an elastic stress model assuming an instant removal of a failed pillar. The geometries and magnitudes of the theoretical seismic moment tensors are in agreement with the observed (i.e. inverted from seismic data). The results indicate that either pillar failure or fracturing in the proximity of the reef (within a fraction of the dominant wavelength of seismic waves) are responsible for a significant portion of the large events recorded in these mines.

The past decade has witnessed unprecedented growth in the development and implementation of solvent extraction technology in the extractive metallurgy of nickel and cobalt. Solvent extraction is proving to be a powerful tool, opening new opportunities for simpler, more cost efficient and environmentally sound metal refining processes. These advances, however, could not have been possible without the cooperative efforts between the nickel industry and the people and organizations involved with reagents, materials and equipment development and supply as well as solvent extraction research, aided by the accumulated knowledge and practical experience from the copper and uranium solvent extraction operations. This paper provides an overview of these developments and some of the challenges ahead.

One of the consequences of globalizing mine finance is a necessity to apply uniform accountancy and valuation standards that are clearly understood and consistently applied by the global investment community. However, each country has unique circumstances, which sometimes make it difficult to align domestic practice with international requirements. South Africa is no exception and issues such as its political history, a taxation regime enforcing different rules on different mineral producers and a unique mineral rights ownership distribution, are barriers to internationalization. The economy is in a transitional phase as a result of the many and diverse policy documents following the change in political dispensation in 1994. Many of these documents have recently been implemented through new legislation and, in the case of mining, negotiations are continuing in order to ensure an acceptable outcome. This paper discusses the challenges that the South African minerals industry faces in the field of mineral property valuation. It draws on international experience and includes a discussion on the unique considerations that the South African mineral property market must take into account in establishing a code for this purpose, as such a code could later be aligned with international practice.

This article is a continuation of a series of publications by the authors on the international debate on resource nationalism, with specific reference to South Africa. Previous outcomes have shown that mine nationalization is not a solution for South Africa, and that maintaining stability of the current mineral and tax regimes is fundamental. It will not be wise to replace existing law and policy instruments until there is a better understanding of the distinction between fact and public perception about the impact of the current system. The new scheme of state custodianship linked to a mining royalty that effectively targets economic rents provides for effective resource use. The methodology in this article is to consider how South Africa's mineral tax regime can be tweaked to achieve optimal management and benefit from mineral extraction and associated rents by avoiding changes feared by investors. The major finding is that the current suite of instruments can be considered a suitable platform for optimal management of resource rents. However, it will be necessary to first investigate ways of improving the mineral beneficiation intent of the royalty structure, and secondly investigate whether the mineral rent portion of the royalty formula can be ring-fenced for the purpose of establishing a sovereign wealth fund.

The properties and deterioration in strength of cemented tailings backfill (CTB )in the underground acidic environment under oxidizing conditions were studied. X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy of the surface of the CTB was carried out, and the sulphuric acid corrosion mechanism elucidated. The properties tested included compressive strength, elastic modulus, cohesion, internal friction angle, variation in the hydrogen ion concentration, and stress-strain relationship in different corrosion periods. The damage model of the CTB was established considering the effects of parameters such as corrosion time and strain on the damage evolution. It was found that the compressive strength, elastic modulus, cohesion (binder effect), and internal friction angle increased at first and then decreased with exposure time. In the long term, the peak stress decreased with corrosion time while the peak strain increased; elastic modulus, and deformation modulus also decreased. The damage caused by corrosion and by load were related by means of a mathematical model, which revealed the relationships between sulphuric attack, load, and damage to backfill in complex underground environments. During corrosion, the expansion of gypsum and ettringite caused microfractures in the CTB. With increasing corrosion time, micro-cracks developed and proliferated. The mechanism of corrosion damage was found to be the dissolution of hydrogen ions and a sulphate ion reaction that produces an expansive substance, resulting in deterioration of the strength of CTB.

Pre-concentration with cyclones and spiral concentrators may offer a method to process dumps considered currently uneconomical to treat.

The distribution of chrome spinels in a magnetically fractionated ilmenite concentrate sourced from the Murray Basin was characterized by XRF assaying, quantitative electron microprobeanalysis, grain mapping, automated mineral phase clustering, and modal analysis. At least 14 distinct chrome spinel types were present in the concentrate. There is considerable variation in the amount of each chrome spinel type present, although a high-Mg, high-Al phase makes up close to 45 per cent of the total spinel population. Magnetic fractionation results showed significant variation in the composition and relative abundance of spinels reporting to each fraction. Low magnetic field strength fractions (ie. high susceptibility grains) were dominated by chrome spinels that are mid-range in Al and Cr. These spinels have the highest magnetite, ulvospinel and Fe(Al,Cr)2O4components. In comparison, the high field strength fractions (i.e. low susceptibility grains) have the majority of the grains with high-Al contents indicating a higher proportion of Mg(Al,Cr)2O4component. Spinels high in a (Al,Cr)2.67O4non-stoichiometriccomponent are absent at low field strengths but tend to be concentrated in the high field strength, non-magnetic fractions. Intermediate field strength fractions tend to exhibit a broad spread in spinel compositional types. A mild roast treatment of the sample had no clear effect on the distribution of chrome spinels between different magnetic fractions, but it did cause a change in the magnetic properties of the accompanying ilmenite grains. The effect of more extreme roasting conditions on the magnetic properties of the chrome spinels is to be determined.

A new technology of atmosphere in inertization of fire section with the help of gazeous nitrogen is presented in the report. This technology is based on membrane air subdivision into two streams, concentrated with nitrogen (up to 99%) and with oxygen correspondently with subsequent giving them into the place of fire. This technology belongs to environmentally friendly ones and it has a great number of technical, mobile and economic advantages comparing with the rest of well-known methods of fire extinguishing. This technology application in Ukrainian coal mines allowed to reduce the member of isolated places of fire at the expense of their extinguishing efficiency.

This paper provides an overview of possible approaches for structuring the ventilation systems for mines that will become operational within the next decade. Features addressed in the paper include: aspects of airway design and layout in the absence of centralized vertical return shafts, the impact of using diesel-powered trackless equipment in conjunction with conveyor belts in the development and production phases of the project, and the need to balance increasing electrical power costs against the requirement for reduced capital expenditure. The paper provides brief descriptions of the strategies employed in real-life situations and presents an overview of various operational parameters affecting the design of ventilation systems that will be used as ?platforms? for much deeper mines in the future.

Like it or not, CPD is upon us. As from 1 January 2006, all registered engineering professionals, i.e. professional engineers, professional engineering technologists, professional certificated engineers and professional engineering technicians, were required to undertake CPD in order to keep their professional registration current. The rules regarding CPD have been gazetted under Government Gazette No. 28328, Board Notice 131 on 23 December 2005, and they also appear on the ECSA website?www.ecsa.co.za. For the convenience of our members they are reproduced in full in this issue of the SAIMM Journal.

Alloys used at high temperature must resist both creep and corrosion. Design for corrosion resistance is based on the formation of a slow-growing, protective oxide scale by selective oxidation of an appropriate alloy component, usually chromium or aluminium. A successful scale will exclude other corrodents, notably carbon, which can otherwise cause extremely rapid corrosion at high temperatures. Selective oxidation of an alloy component necessarily lowers the concentration of that metal in the alloy subsurface region. Under thermal cycling conditions, mechanical damage to the scale leads to renewed oxide growth and accelerated alloy depletion. Eventually, a point is reached where diffusion of a corrodent into the alloy becomes competitive with the outward diffusion of alloy metal to repair the protective scale. Two examples of alloy failure by carbon attack are considered. In the steam cracking (pyrolysis) process, centrifugally cast tubes of heat-resisting alloy are exposed to a gas stream of hydrocarbon and steam, at a carbon activity of unity. Formation and repair of the surface chromia scale causes alloy depletion, Kirkendall void formation, and subsequent internal precipitation of chromium-rich carbides. Their formation makes chromia scale formation much more difficult, and generates internal stress. Eventually, the tubes fail by creep rupture. In other processes (e.g. steam reforming, heat treatment), synthesis gases are supersaturated with carbon at intermediate temperatures. Once the alloy's protective scale is breached, carbon attacks the depleted substrate. In the case of ferritic alloys, it forms a surface scale of Fe3C. As this scale thickens, the supersaturated carbon precipitates as graphite within its outer regions. The resulting volume expansion causes disintegration of the cementite in a process known as metal dusting. In the case of austenitic alloys, no metal carbide is formed. Instead, carbon dissolves in the depleted metal to diffuse inward and precipitate as graphite within the metal matrix. Again, volume expansion causes disintegration of the alloy, and metal dusting results. Dusting occurs at an extraordinarily rapid rate, and leads to failure by section loss or even penetration.

In the present study, the production of low carbon ferrochromium (LC-FeCr) from chromite concentrates containing 55.09% Cr2O3 and 13.06% Fe via metallothermic process was investigated. For this aim, in the experiments, the aluminothermic reduction method was applied in an open crucible. 10% CrO3 + 10% NaClO3, 15% CrO3 + 5% NaClO3 and 20% CrO3 by weight of concentrate were added to the charge, respectively and the charge was reduced with aluminium. The experiments were done with the additions of 90, 100, 110, 120 and 130% of stoichiometric requirement of aluminium. The highest Cr content in alloys was found as 71.7% at 120% of stoichiometric Al whereas the highest Cr recovery in alloys was found as 71.8% at 130% of stoichiometric Al when the both charge contained 15% CrO3 + 5% NaClO3 by weight of chromite concentrate.

The Outokumpu Steel Belt Sintering (SBS) Technology is used for manufacturing chromite pellets that are charged into a smelting furnace for ferrochromium production. One of the main elements in successful furnace operation is the control of gas flows inside the furnace, giving improved temperature distribution in the bed during the process. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) gives excellent opportunities for studying these phenomena. An investigation using CFD can be performed relatively fast. For example, implications of different configurations can be studied within a day and an optimum design chosen. Therefore, Outokumpu Technology has developed a Steel Belt Sintering Model (SBSM), which takes advantage of a commercial CFD code. Each main physicochemical event occurring in a steel belt sintering furnace is incorporated independently in the SBS model as a sub-model, enabling every event to be studied separately. The commercial CFD code solves mass, momentum, species and energy equations for determination of the gas flow, composition and temperature. In addition, the Outokumpu SBSM takes into account the moving pellet bed, drying of pellets interms of water content, coke combustion, oxidation and reduction of chromite and the decomposition of carbonates and silicates. During the development of the model, numerous laboratory-scale tests were performed. The sub-models were validated against the laboratory tests. The reliability of the Outokumpu Steel Belt Sintering Model was validated against a pilot-scale batch-sintering furnace by comparing the modelling results against measurements. The aim of this paper is to give a brief presentation of the Outokumpu steel belt sintering model by showing some general modelling examples. Emphasis has been placed on demonstrating some of the main features of the model.

This study deals with the presentation of the mechanized longwall mining project introduced some years ago to increase productivity and output of Aegean Lignite Establishment (ELI) owned by Turkish Coal Enterprises (TKI.) and the comparison of this method with a planned alternative new mining method called ?shortwall mining? where continuous miners will be introduced as primary coal excavation machines. Following the planning phase, production costs have been calculated for both mining methods on the basis of a panel having a height of 7.5 m. In addition to cost analysis, both methods have been evaluated using ?the multi-dimensional objective system?. In this evaluation the value synthesis has been carried out according to scoring models. Lastly, the advantages and disadvantages of both production methods have been stated by analysing them according to related criteria. In the light of outputs gathered from the analyses, it has been determined that the shortwall mining method will out perform the longwall method. "Rotary kilns are used for a variety of mineral processing operations. Hatch makes use of a kiln model developed from first principles to evaluate designs for its clients. This tool has been applied to a variety of pyrometallurgical applications, including ferrovanadium, nickel carbonate, nickel laterite, iron ore reduction, and spodumene (lithium) production.This paper illustrates the application of numerical optimization techniques in combination with the kiln model in the interrogation of a generic iron ore reduction process. The fundamental modelling concepts are explained, followed by a description of the optimization approach. The results show how the combination of the two methods, with modern computing power, can generate a large number of viable design and operating candidates."

In this study, coke oven tar additions over a range of 0?8 wt.% were evaluated as a possible substitute for imported coal fractions. The coke oven tar used was collected from tar decanters in the byproducts section of the coking plant. The moisture content in the tar varied depending on the residence time and water carryover from the coke oven tar separators to the storage tanks. Moisture contents of 1 wt.%, 3 wt.%, and 6 wt.% were investigated in order to evaluate the effect on coal blend, carbonization, and coke properties. At 6 wt.% moisture content with 6 wt.% coke oven tar, although the coke quality improved the yield showed a 4% decrease. On the other hand, 1 wt.% moisture content with coke oven tar of 6 wt.%, increased the yield by 1% and the coke quality improved. However, the latter process was characterized by an excessive increase in wall pressure and pushing energy, both of which are detrimental to the oven walls. The optimum moisture content in coke oven tar was found to be 3 wt.% with a coke oven tar addition of 6 wt.% in the coal blend. With these conditions, the coke properties improved and wall pressure and pushing energy were acceptable. However, a decrease in coke yield of up to 2% was observed. Despite this, coke oven tar addition is considered to be a viable option based upon economic factors of a reduction in the quantity and cost of imported coking coals that is required to achieve the same optimum final coke product. Bauxite residue known as red mud (RM) is a by-product produced in massive quantities during alumina production by the Bayer process with a utilisation rate of less than 5%. A large amount of RM accumulated and produced continuously has had a seriously adverse impact on the surrounding ecological environment. The application of RM in building materials is considered to be the most effective and thorough way to make RM harmless and recycle resources for the reason that adding RM to concrete as a mineral admixture could not only consume a lot of RM, but also save cement and other energy-consuming industrial products. In this paper, the adaptability to cement and aggregate of RM was studied. The results showed that the compressive strength and flexural strength of concrete using ordinary Portland cement, slag Portland cement or fly ash Portland cement as cementing material showed different trends with the increase of the amount of RM. The influence rules of RM on the compressive strength of Portland cement, slag Portland cement and fly ash Portland cement concrete were similar, whether for silicate aggregate or carbonate aggregate. RM has a negative correlation to the flexural strength of silicate aggregate-ordinary Portland cement concrete, but a positive correlation to silicate aggregate-slag Portland cement, silicate aggregate-fly ash Portland Cement. RM promoted the formation of calcium carbonate crystals and inhibited the formation of ettringite and calcium hydroxide crystals in the matrix while ordinary Portland cement, Portland cement and fly ash Portland cement were used as cementing materials. This study provided support for the use of RM in concrete, the reduction of solid waste storage, and the saving of high energy consumption cement as well. Mineral exploration programmes around the world use data from remote sensing, geophysics, and direct sampling. On a regional scale, the combination of airborne geophysics and ground-based geochemical sampling can aid geological mapping and mineral exploration. Since airborne geophysical and traditional soil-sampling data are generated at different spatial resolutions, they are not immediately comparable due to their different sampling density. Several geostatistical techniques, including indicator cokriging and collocated cokriging, can be used to integrate different types of data into a geostatistical model. However, with increasing numbers of variables the inference of the crosscovariance model required for cokriging can be demanding in terms of effort and computational time. In this paper a Gaussian-based Bayesian updating approach is applied to integrate airborne radiometric data and ground-sampled geochemical soil data to maximize information generated from the soil survey, enabling more accurate geological interpretation for the exploration and development of natural resources. The Bayesian updating technique decomposes the collocated estimate into two models: prior and likelihood models. The prior model is built from primary information and the likelihood model is built from secondary information. The prior model is then updated with the likelihood model to build the final model. The approach allows multiple secondary variables to be simultaneously integrated into the mapping of the primary variable. The Bayesian updating approach is demonstrated using a case study from Northern Ireland. The geostatistical technique was used to improve the resolution of soil geochemistry, at a density of one sample per 2 km2, by integrating more closely measured airborne geophysical data from the GSNI Tellus Survey, measured over a footprint of 65 x 200 m. The directly measured geochemistry data were considered as primary data and the airborne radiometric data were used as secondary data. The approach produced more detailed updated maps and in particular enhanced information on the mapped distributions of zinc, copper, and lead. The enhanced delineation of an elongated northwest/southeast trending zone in the updated maps strengthened the potential for discovering stratabound base metal deposits..
