The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) ground control research program includes several projects focused on developing design criteria for yielding-pillar-based longwall gate road systems. As part of this program, mining practices at the Sunnyside Mines, Sunnyside Reclamation and Salvage Co., Sunnyside, UT, are being documented to preserve the long history of yield pillar system evolution on the property. Published information describing the specific in-mine performance of the numerous gate road configurations utilized at the Sunnyside Mines is very limited. To overcome this deficit, USBM personnel interviewed 30 longtime mine employees representing nearly 700 years of mining experience at the Sunnyside operations. Mining conditions in 12 specific areas in the Nos. 1, 2, and 3 Mines were discussed in the interviews. Also, broad topics such as general mining practices, safety, and geology were often addressed during the discussions. Comprising the body of this report is an extensive record of the events and conditions experienced while mining the identified areas. In addition, eight significant conclusions were developed that accurately summarize the general opinions of the interviewed personnel regarding mining conditions and practices at Sunnyside.

This investigation was performed to develop chlorination methods for extracting tungsten from scheelite and from an ore concentrate containing a mixture of scheelite and wolframite. On a laboratory scale with proper temperature control using elemental chlorine, over 90 percent extraction of tungsten is achieved. Carbon and sulfur dioxide were studied as reducing agents. The effects of salts such as calcium fluoride and sodium chloride were studied as additives to increase extraction and to reduce impurities in the volatile tungsten chloride product. Sodium chloride reacts with ferric chloride to form a nonvolatile double salt; whereas the chlorides and oxychlorides of tungsten are volatile and consequently condense free of iron. Separation of tungsten from molybdenum from an equal molar mixture was successful by fractionally distilling the oxygen-free chlorides and by selectively condensing the oxychlorides. Yields of 60 and 80 percent, respectively, were achieved for separating the less volatile tungsten chlorides containing less than 0.5 percent molybdenum.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigations, of which this is the seventh. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in , this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project, except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes are shown on figure 13 in volume 1. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of .1 minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each half township is given with the discussion covering that area.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing clay mining, crushing and grinding methods, and costs, at various operations throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding methods used. The, cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs may in many instances cause embarrassment to the individual operator as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulation shall ensue. The following report deals specifically with the methods employed by the Evans Pipe Co., Uhrichsville, Tuscarawas County, Ohio. The author wishes to acknowledge the assistance of the following company officials: T. J. Evans, II, president; T. J. Evans III, vice president and general manager; and L. P. Young, general superintendent.

One of the more important functions of the Federal Bureau of Mines is conservation of the life and health of employees of the mineral and allied industries. Since its very beginning the Bureau has encouraged competition between mine rescue and first-aid teams as a means of stimulating interest in safety and accident-prevention work. In addition to sponsoring competition on a national and international scale during the past 45 years, the Bureau has also assisted State mining departments, mining companies, and mining organizations in holding State, district, company, and other local meets. This assistance includes providing instructors to train teams, judges, and other contest officials. The Bureau has also furnished problems and outlines for working them, judges I discount sheets (scorecards), contest rules, and problem judges. In fact, Bureau representatives participate in nearly all State, district, and company contests and have bad complete charge of some contests.

This paper describing the mining practices at Mine No. 1, Menominee Range, Mich., is one of a. series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. It is felt that the publication of this information will be of interest and value to the mining industry at large and especially to operators whose mining conditions are similar to those described. Part 2 gives short abstracts of publications that appeared during fiscal year 1964; in general, the research reported in these publications antedates the report period. Part 3 describes a short-term investigation into safety problems associated with shipping of molten sulfur; this investigation is not at present destined for publication elsewhere.

The investigation to evaluate the reserves of coking coal is being made by the Bureau of Mines in three parts: (1) To estimate known measured and indicated recoverable reserves of all coking coal; (2) to upgrade marginal coals through effective preparation; and (3) to study carbonizing properties of coals and coal blends not now widely used for metallurgical coke making. This is the ninth of a series of reports giving results of studies by counties under part (1) of the investigation. (See Appendix.) This report covers Raleigh County, W. Va., which comprises parts of Bald Knob, Eccles, Beckley, Meadow Creek, Mullens, Flattop, and Big Bend quadrangles. (See fig. 1.) A base map for each bed in each quadrangle was made to the scale 1 inch equals 1,200 feet. Maps of mines, location of drill holes, bed and total coal thickness, and outcrop of the bed were plotted on the maps. With all available data plotted, isopach lines were drawn to limit areas of known unmined reserves in beds 0 to 14 inches thick, 14 to 28 inches thick, 28 to 42 inches thick, and over 42 inches thick. These areas of coal reserves also were divided into measured" and "indicated" categories. All areas in each thickness range and in each category, mined-out areas. areas excluded from the estimate but which may contain reserves based only on geologic inference, and areas outside of the outcrop were measured by planimeter on the base maps, Estimates of total reserves 14 inches and more thick and maps for individual beds were prepared from these data.

Solid state reactions of manganese with silica were investigated in high-temperature tests. Reactions of 0.5 to 4.0 moles manganese (Mn) with 1 mole silica (SiO2) at 1,100° C and of 2.0 Mn:SiO2 mole-ratio mixtures at 1,000° to 1,150° C yielded products consisting of a slag phase and a metallic phase. At 1,100° C, the slag phase from reactions of the low Mn:SiO2 mole-ratio mixtures was composed of SiO2 and rhodonite (MnSiO3), and the slag phase from the high Mn:SiO2 mixtures was composed of MnSiOs and tephroite (Mn2SiO4). The metallic phase from the corresponding low Mn:SiO2 mole-ratio reactants consisted of two manganese silicides, Mn5Si3 and Mn3Si; from the high Mn:SiOg mixtures, it was Mn and the manganese silicide (Mn5Si). For the higher mole ratios of MnSiO2 the manganese content in the metallic phase increased, while the manganese and silica contents of the slag phase remained nearly constant. The slags did not contain free or uncombined manganese oxide (MuO). For the 2.5 to 4.0 Mn:SiO2 mole-ratio mixtures reacted at 1,100° C, the maximum quantities of silica reduced and of the manganese in the slag appeared to become asymptotical at about 41 and 48 percent, respectively. A brominating procedure was developed that was highly selective in removing the metallic constituents from the reaction product, leaving the slag phase as residue. X-ray diffraction patterns were obtained on prepared silicides Mn5Si, Mn3Si, and MnSi.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a series of ignition tests with two types of conical bits (plumb bob and pencil) used on continuous mining machines, to determine their ignition potential at various bit speeds, cut depths, and wear conditions. The tests were conducted using single bits mounted on a 34-in-diam drum in a Bureau ignition test facility. The bits impacted blocks of Berea sandstone in a 6.5 pet methane atmosphere at various bit speeds and cut depths. In a new condition, the plumb bob bits were considerably more incendive than the pencil bits, causing ignitions in 32 of 35 tests at 60 rpm, compared with ignitiolls in 2 of 22 tests for the pencil bits. The results from new bit testing also show that reduction of bit tip velocity to 180 fpm does not eliminate ignition potential. When subjected to progressive wear, bits of both types were more incendive when they were locked in place, unable to rotate, than when they were free to rotate.

"The interaction of amorphous 1ilica particles with several hydrogen bonding agents (H2O, C2H5OH, C7H2NO) was investigated by monitoring the changes in the bulk and surface IR vibrational modes of silica using photoacoustic spectroscopy. It is argued that the intensity of the silanol band at 3747 cm-1 provides (an inverse) quantitative measure of the interaction or surface groups, along with the shift in the broad hydroxyl band, the interaction following the order C7H2NO > C2H5OH > H2O. Index Headings: Silica; Surface vibrational modes; Photoacoustic spectroscopy; Hydrogen bonding agents.INTRODUCTIONThe use of m spectroscopy to study the adsorption on solid surfaces is well documented in the literature.1 2 For example, hydroxylation of a clean silica surface results in the formation of the free silanol group Si-OH, with a sharp IR band near 3747 cm-1• Further hydroxylation produces a broad band near 3500 cm-1, which is believed to result from various hydrogen-bonded silanol bands leading to a multilayered surface structure of few nm.3-5 Earlier studies had indicated a relationship between the surface silanol band and various chemical activities of silica such as cytotoxicity, 7- 9 catalysis, 10-12 and others.13 Recent studies from our group14-in which the intensity of the silanol band and cytotoxicity of silica, heat-treated at various temperatures up to 1095°C, were investigated have provided a strong correlation between cytotoxicity and intensity of the silanol band.Coating of silica by PVPNO (polyvinyl-2-pyridine N-oxide with the empirical formula C7H8NO), a strong hydrogen bonding agent, is known to reduce the cytotoxicity of silica, presumably by chemically blocking the silanol groups from phospholipids.15 This interaction of the hydrogen bonding agents with the silica can be studied by m spectroscopy, and Knozinger16 and Rouxlet and Semples11 have used transmission m spectroscopy to study the effect of various chemicals on the surface IR modes of silica. However, one of the major disadvantages of transmission IR spectroscopy is that the sample preparation (grinding and mixing with KBr and pelletizing) usually distorts the surface modes (see, e.g., Ref. 14) and there is always a doubt about the effect of the sample preparation on the measured properties. In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has become the technique of choice for studying the IR spectra of samples in their natural state, since no sample preparation is necessary.18•19 Moreover, according to a recent paper, 20 the relative intensity of the surface modes in PA spectroscopy of silica particles is much higher than that in transmission FT-IR spectroscopy. Consequently PA spectroscopy is ideal for studying the surface chemistry. In this work, we have used PA spectroscopy to investigate the interaction of three hydrogen bonding agents (C7H8NO, C2H50H, and H20) with the silica surface by monitoring changes in the surface m modes. Our results show that the surface IR modes get perturbed to a larger extent than the bulk IR modes in interaction with the hydrogen bonding agents. Moreover, whereas in the earlier studies, the shift of the broad silanol band near 3500 cm-1 was used as a measure of the interaction with hydrogen bonding agents,16•17 here we show that the relative decrease in the intensity of the sharp silanol band near 3747 cm-1 also serves as a quantitative parameter for the relative surface coverage and surface modification. During a series of resistivity measurements carried out in 1929 and 1930 a number of questions arose concerning the effect of topography on the character of the curves and the depths attained , the ratio of true depth to certain radii interpreted as representing depth , etc. To answer these questions it was decided to undertake a series of experimental investigations on artificial strata . It is the purpose of the present paper to present the results of the studies thus undertaken .

Oil yields, lithology, and stratigraphy have been evaluated for 15 cored wells and two sampled wells representing 10 square miles of the Tipton Member of the Green River Formation near Green River, Wyo. The area evaluated is being used by the Bureau of Mines for experimental production of oil from the oil shales in place. Lithology and oil yields were correlated to produce a stratigraphy diagram for the in situ study area, permitting precise designation of comparable sections. Because of lateral uniformity of oil shale, oil yields from eight cores and two sets of drill-cutting samples within a quarter section show the range of variation in average oil yield arising from experimental error. Variation in average oil yields from the seven cores representing the 10-square-mile study area lies within the expected experimental error. No difference in oil-shale richness across the study area is indicated. Average oil yields for three Tipton sections in the study area were deter-mined as follows: (1) The entire Tipton Member oil shale (about 145 feet thick), 13.3 gallons per ton; (2) the 40-foot upper rich zone, 21.0 gallons per ton; and (3) the 21-foot zone in which the Laramie Energy Research Center is conducting in situ experiments, 22.4 gallons per ton. One acre of the 21-foot experimental section represents 34,300 barrels of oil in place, and 1 acre of the Tipton's 40-foot rich upper layer represents 62,000 barrels.

"Distinction between Tripoli and Diatomaceous EarthMuch confusion exists both in the literature and in the trade as to the proper use of the terms tripoli, tripolite diatomeceons or infusoriai earth, and kieseigunr. All of these terms are often used synonymously by the trade and even in mineralogists and other reference books. Actually, tripoli is a ma- is a material of definite and distinct physical and chemical properties and all of the other terms belong to a different material with just as definite and distinct properties.Originally the term tripolite (loosely called tripole) was given to a diatomaceous cart from Tripoli in Northern Africa. Dena (J.D. Dana, A System of Mineralogy 6th Ed.) calls this material tripolite and gives no authority for the use of the terms tripoli. Between 1880 and 1890 the deposits near Missouri, were opened and the material placed on the market as ""Tripoli"" no doubt due to its resemblance in some respect to the original tripolite or diatomaceous worth from Tripoli. Since that time the term tripoli has with increasing definitenesss been reserved for the Seneca material and other siliceous of similar origin and physical properties, while all siliceous material of organic origin, containing dilators, has been called diatomaceous earth (or its synonyms infusorial earth, kiselguhr, etc.). Rottenstone is sometimes classed with tripoli."

The objectives of this research were to determine the practicability of using cobalt as a means of controlling the amount of ferrite in the micro-structures of semiaustenitic stainless steels, and to determine the effects of reduced ferrite content on mechanical properties of these steels. Cobalt additions of up to 3 weight-percent were made to type 17-7 PH2 (AISI 631) stainless steel. Ferrite contents were determined for alloys in the aged condition, and for alloys quenched from the hot working temperature. Ferrite can be completely eliminated from the microstructure of 17-7 PH stainless steel by additions of cobalt, but complete elimination of the ferrite phase results in lower tensile strength, yield strength, and hardness. Tensile properties, hardness, and impact strength were determined for aged material. A subzero temperature treatment before heattreating was necessary to obtain maximum strength in the alloys containing cobalt. Addition of 2 weight-percent cobalt enhances mechanical properties of 17-7 PH stainless steel.

"INTRODUCTION This report contains information on the approximate size of the smallest dust Particles revealed by or the limit of visibility of various microscopic systems. The information was obtained mainly for use in interpreting and evaluating results of number-contentration and particle-size, determinations on, samples of unhygienic particulate matter collected from industrial atmospheres and in developing better methods for determinations nations.Some speculation and even controversy have been published on the limit of visibility of the widely used microscopic system (16-mm., 0.25-or 0.3-N.A. objective, and axial light-field illumination) used in counting the dust in the liquid medium from impinger, 4/ 5/ filter-paper, 6/ and other samples, but little or no quantitative data have been published on the limits of visibility of this or other microscopic' system.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe interest, encouragement, and assistance received from H. Figure 1-1 shows the basic transmitter design concepts used for the pulse system, the half-wave CW system, and the full-wave CW system. The antenna current waveform is also shown for each transmitter for typical operating frequencies and antennas. The switches shown in Figure 1-i were actually implemented using solid state devices. In all three systems the signaling format may be interrupted to conserve power and thereby extend battery life. Frequency accuracy and stability is achieved using a tuning fork oscillator in the transmitters and tuning fork filters in the receivers for all three systems. This provides the narrow reception bandwidths needed to enhance signal detectability. All three systems also use frequency assignment for identification purposes. The location schemes employed are likewise identical, each being based on detecting the null (signal minimum) of the horizontal magnetic field on the surface. Since these systems are basically similar, the primary purpose is to select the system which gives the maximum signal detectability on the surface from a manpack transmitter operating in the mine. Both the pulse and half-wave C W systems use a d. c. pulse to energize the loop antenna. However, with the pulse system, this pulse duration is short compared to the pulse repetition rate (prf), whereas with the half-wave C W system the pulse duration equals one-half the period of the switching frequency. In the pulse system, energy from the battery is stored in a capacitor so that during the switching interval the internal resistance of the power source can be considered almost negligible. Both transmitters must drive a loop antenna which is a reactive load having inductance, L, and resistance, Ra.

"IntroductionIt is commonly understood that aerosol particles may be injurious to human health if they are of a size that enables them to enter the respiratory tract. Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP) is one disease known to be caused by coal mining related particles.The location in the respiratory tract where the particles are deposited is primarily a function of the equivalent aerodynamic diameter (EAD) of the particle. The equivalent aerodynamic diameter is the diameter of a spherical particle with a density of 1.0 gm/cm3 with the same falling speed as the particle in question. For a spherical particle the calculation is rather simple in that the equivalent aerodynamic diameter is simply the diameter of the particle in question multiplied by the square root of the density of the particle. For irregularly shaped particles, such as coal particles, there is no simple way to make the EAD calculation. For example, Figure 1 is only one of an infinite variety of particle shapes that can be found in practice and the aerodynamic size of this particle and, therefore, its deposition location in the respiratory tract would be nearly impos-sible to estimate accurately.The normal method for determining the aerodynamic diameter of particles has been to experimentally measure the size of the particles in a settling chamber or with an inertial classifier such as an impactor, cyclone or a centrifuge, since inertial classifiers have the property of classifying the particles according to their aerodynamic diameters."") However, these devices can only give limited information on the EAD of a single particle with a specific shape. Impactors and cyclones, for example, collect particles in size ranges and not at a specific size, so the determination of the EAD of a specific particle is not possible. A centrifuge, on the other hand, can measure the EAD of a specific particle but the equipment is costly and procedure laborious, and it may not be possible to disperse a particle of a specific shape into the centrifuge. The centrifuge can be used to determine the EAD of clusters of spheres in various arrays, but introducing particles of a specific irregular shape may not be feasible. Furthermore, the EAD is a function of the orientation of an irregularly shaped particle and the orientation of a particle in an inertial classifier is unknown. The orientation may also vary as the particle passes through the classifier.Because of the difficulty in determining the EAD of an irregularly shaped particle, we have undertaken a program to apply theoretical numerical methods to calculate the EAD of any shape particle. In our laboratory we have, for some time, been using numerical methods to determine the flow field of air within instruments such as impactors, (2) inlets, (3) and virtual impactors (4) Recently, this technique has been expanded into the three-dimensional regime, and the flow fields and particle motion characteristics within cyclones (5) and glove boxes have been studied. We have now begun to use these numerical three-dimensional flow programs to study the flow field around irregularly shaped particles to determine their drag coefficients, falling speed, and thus, their EAD."

To develop effective noise controls for continuous min-ing machines (CMMs) to reduce worker noise exposure. Background Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is an occupational illness caused by chronic exposure to excessive sound levels. For underground coal mine workers, NIHL continues to be a serious health issue. Analysis of hearing loss data suggests that by retirement age, 70%?90% of U.S. coal mine workers will have a hearing impairment. Operated in the confined spaces of underground mines, large industrial mining equipment often produces sound levels that can be harmful to workers. Of all equipment used in underground coal mining operations, CMMs account for the most noise overexposures. To reduce the occurrence of noise over-exposures, engineering noise controls must be developed for the CMM.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines awarded a contract to Foster-Miller Associates, Inc. (FMA) to provide recommendations on the safest, most practical methods for complying with new regulations requiring that all underground coal miners have a self-contained, self-rescuer (SCSR) -a device capable of supplying, in an emergency, 1 hr of self-contained oxygen (no breathing of mine air). This report develops information and recommendations which could be used during the early stages of nationwide compliance, especially in the areas of inspection, testing, and underground storage of SCSRs. Volume I contains an Executive Summary, Introduction, Definitions, Recommended Guidelines for District Managers and Mine Operators, and a Storage Plan Checklist and Sample Form.
