Computational modeling of explosively loaded saturated sand on a suspended plate is an inherently complex problem. In this study a computational method is used to predict the dynamic pressure load/impulse from a buried charge. A fully coupled code modeling the explosive charge, sand and air with a Eulerian mesh and the plate structure with Lagrange elements, such as Gemini-Dyna, is an appropriate computational tool. In water-saturated sand, the loadings are soil and water-transmitted shock and bubble or blast effects depending on the depth and the charge size. The computations provide the capability to determine the total impulse load placed on a horizontal plate on or above the soil due to an explosion in the saturated sand for different burial depths in saturated sand and different plate stand off distances. The following test case will be presented: (a) 4.5 Kg (10 lbs) TNT, 10.16 cm (4 in) depth of burial to top of charge, and 20.32 cm (8 inch) stand off distance (Test 4).

On August 3, 1977 the 95th Congress passed Public Law 95-87, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977. This Act created the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSM), which was given the responsibility of formulating regulations to implement the Act. This paper explains the rationale behind the specific provisions of the final blasting regulations, which were published in volume 44, No. 50 of the Federal Register, dated March 13, 1979. The major items covered by the regulations include preblasting surveys, blasting schedules, protection of the public, ground vibration limits, the scaled distance equation, airblast limits, blasting procedures, and record keeping. The regulations are designed to protect the safety and well-being of the public and to protect buildings and structures such as wells, pipelines, and storage facilities from damage.

Before this study was started, literature was searched and cases of alleged water well damage were investigated. Occurrence of ground water in Appalachia is primarily in low yield, fractured, water table aquifers. Four test sites were chosen based on geographic and geologic diversity. Test wells were drilled at each site and base line data on water quality, static water level, and drawdown characteristics were obtained before surface mining commenced. Blast-induced ground vibrations were measured at the surface by the wells at levels up to 5.44 inches per second maximum resultant particle velocity. Measurements made at the bottom of wells indicated that vibrations were considerably attenuated at depths of 140 to 160 feet.

The usual method of dismantling massive concrete formations with explosives, is to totally demolish the entire concrete structure. If any portion of a concrete structure is required to remain in its original form and retain its structural integrity, the use of explosives is usually forbidden and the portion to be dismantled is demolished by mechanical means, using various techniques and equipment that are tedious and expensive.

Development of DMCBLAST-3D is continuing and now includes the capability to simulate the detonation of multiple blastholes in multiple rows that make up a conventional bench blast, either in a rock quarry or a surface coal mine. DMCBLAST-3D is a three-dimensional extension of the proven twodimensional rock blast modeling code, DMCBLAST. DMCBLAST has been under development since 1987 and has successfully predicted the physics, mechanisms and results of a number of different types of rock blasting including, coal mine bench blasting, mineral mine choke blasting and underground stope blasting. Substantial effort has gone into the qualification and verification of DMCBLAST by comparing computer code predictions with real blasts in the field. Comparison with field data has also provided significant guidance to the development of the code.

Transmission of sound through the atmosphere is affected by local conditions. Anecdotal accounts of the sound of cannon fire traveling great distances go back to the Civil War. The Royal Society published a paper near the turn of the century concerning the reports from the cannons fired in London at the funeral of Queen Victoria. Early computers were used by the U.S. Army at Aberdeen in Maryland in the 1950’s to model airblast problems during munitions demolition. Today’s blaster has to have access to weather information beyond a simple local forecast. Surface winds, winds aloft and temperature profiles have a dominant role in neighbors reaction to blasting. Many ground vibration complaints are really airblast complaints. Blasters who maintain ground velocities under . 1 inches/ second are often perplexed by complaints from distant neighbors, even when local monitoring shows airblast to be under 110 dB. This paper will help the blaster identify warning signs of high airblast conditions.

A time series and system analysis modeling technique was applied to signals from strain egages mounted on a fully grouted resin roof bolt and signals from accelerometers mounted on the bolt head and roof rock to determine the roof bolt's response to repeated blast loading. The derived model gives a comprehensive quantitative description of the modes of vibration of the roof bolt response to each blast loading. The damping ratios and natural frequencies of the modes of vibration can reveal the alteration of the process dynamics due to the deterioration of the roof rock and can be used to identify the incipience of instability in the roof bolt system.

In mineral industry operations the insitu ore is’separated from the waste rock and is subjected to a series ofprocesses to convert it into a valuable product. Profitability of any operation in this industry depends on how eficiently the insitu rock (ore -I- waste) is converted in to the final product and how much value @ice) it commands in the market. Traditionally, the total process in mineral industry is classt@ed into two groups as mining and milling, and optimised independently without considering the impact of one over the other. This paper investigates the impact of mining operations (especially blasting;) on downstream processes and demonstrates the potential benefits of the “Mine - Mill Blasting” approach through simulations and case histories.

The Bureau of Mines fired seven test blasts in a 22-ft bench of limestone, screening the material to investigate the influence of explosive type and between row delays on fragmentation. Four 4-hole, single-row test shots were conducted evaluating dynamite, ANFO, emulsion, and a 60-40 emulsion-ANFO mix. Three 12-hole shots, with three rows of 4-holes, evaluated delays between rows of 24, 36, and 120 ms. Accurate in-hole electronic delays were used, firing within 1.5-ms of the nominal delay. All seven shots had a 6- to 7-ft burden, 10-ft spacing, with a hole diameter of 3-1/2 in fired on a 12-ms delay between holes in the row. The tests were instrumented with strain gauges grouted in the burden region examining stress wave and gas pressure effects. Fiber optic probes were used to confirm timing and to obtain detonation velocities.

Although unproven, it is suspected that there have been eleven locations since 1988 where explosive generated carbon monoxide (CO) gas moved through the earth and accumulated in nearby underground enclosed spaces. This paper summarizes the incidents, which involved about 30 suspected or medically verified CO poisonings and 1 fatality. Ten incidents occurred in residences and one occurred in a manhole. Although practically nothing is known about the mechanism behind the suspected gas migration, review of the incidents and available information indicates there are certain warning signs and a successful remediation technique available. In each case, overburden heavily confined the explosive in the blasts, preventing release of explosive-generated gases to the atmosphere. All the blasts were in residential areas, and none were excavated immediately. Where the distance from the blast was recorded, 5 of the blasts were within 20 to 50 feet (ft) (6 to 15 meters [m]) of the underground enclosed spaces, 3 were 100 to 150 ft (30 to 46 m) away, and 1 was 400 to 500 ft (120 to 150 m) away. Investigators often identified suspected pathways from the blast site into the underground enclosed spaces. One technique appeared successful at quickly correcting an existing condition. This technique involved applying negative pressure to the earth and removing the CO from the ground surrounding the underground enclosed space.

The ultimate aim of our overall task, of which the effort described in this paper is a part, is to be able to model the impulsive output of buried charges and the response of targets of interest. It is not practical or cost-effective to determine the response of all targets of interest to buried charges of all sizes by testing them. In order to have confidence in our models, however, they must be validated by a modest number of tests. A critical element in modeling the response of a target is the ability to model the loading function. The load a buried charge applies to a target above it when the charge detonates can be characterized in terms of the vertical impulse. The vertical impulse is a function of the size of the charge, its depth of burial, and the properties of the soil in which it is buried. The primary objective of the effort described in this paper is to determine the load a known charge places on a non-responding target so the data can be used to validate our models.

In the late 70’s and early 80’s in conjunction with other oil and gas well stimulation studies, personnel from the Dynamic Effects Lab performed model testing to demonstrate the effectiveness of utilizing an open section of borehole just before a plug. We called the process stem induced fracturing. The open section beneath the stem was used to increase the pressure magnitude and spread out the duration of the pressure pulse. This technique was later utilized to by Frank Chiapetta (1) in the fracture and fragmentation of rock in quarry blasting situations. He called his technique air deck blasting. In fact, Frank found that the Russians had previously discovered the same technique. There is currently interest in utilizing air deck blasting with an open section of hole beneath the explosive at the bottom of the bore hole to better remove the toe in a fragmentation shot. This paper reviews the development of stem induced fracturing and then describes a series of model tests conducted to measure borehole pressure at points along a borehole when an explosive charge is detonated at the midpoint of the borehole. Tests were conducted in both stiff boreholes (aluminum) and less rigid boreholes (PMMA-Plexiglas). Pressure time profiles were measured at the charge site, midway between the charge and the bottom of the hole, at the stemming at the top of the borehole, and at the bottom of the borehole. Crack initiation sites and crack propagation were also determined in the PMMA models. Some high speed pictures were taken of the event in the PMMA.

In use, blasting powder is exploded by a spark from fuse, electric squib or miner’s squib, or by a primer of some high explosive, the last being employed only in heavy charges on open work. In mining, and sometimes in light charges on open work, blasting powder is made into cartridges by means of a paper tube or cylinder sealed at one end, which is known as the Du Pont tamping bag. Sometimes the paper cylinder is made by the miner by coiling a section of heavy paper, known as blasting paper, around a wooden pin, called a cartridge pin, and securing it with what is called blasting soap. The removal of the pin leaves a cylindrical cartridge open at one end, into which the powder is poured and the top folded and sealed with blasting soap.

After a long week of work in Colorado Springs this past July, I was looking forward to flying home to start a long anticipated family vacation. As I grabbed my seat on the plane, a man sitting next to me innocently inquired, to the row as a whole and not to me in particular, “I wonder what the weather will be like in Phoenix”? To most people, this is a common (maybe the most common) topic of casual conversation. To a meteorologist that just dealt with six thunderstorm delays at a major golf event over 4 days, well, lets just say the smirk on my face said it all. After giving my flight mate a detailed forecast and a short explanation on why I would know such information, I sensed, correctly, the inevitable follow up question was coming. “Why would you need a meteorologist at a golf tournament?”

The advantages and disadvantages of using inclined boreholes in blasting has been under discussion for a long time. Some recognized disadvantages are that drilling costs, both operating and capital costs, are higher for inclined holes than for vertical ones, and that drilling accuracy is more difficult to maintain. People who have used angled holes in practice, on the other hand, have claimed that the quality of blast results was improved. In fact, their popularity has increased, especially in Australia.

Habits take us where we were yesterday and attitudes tend to keep us there. Until recently, little had been accomplished to improve conventional explosive energy for use offshore. But with the special requirements of the Offshore Oil Industry, and particularly in the North Sea, most equipment, products and services must be specialized as well. Previous attempts to excavate a trench for a sealine in surf areas had been impossible to accomplish. But with the application of safe, controlled explosive energy, an impossible task to accomplish yesterday has now become a reality. Explosive energy, often overlooked as a convenient and economical offshore tool, excavated a clean trench underwater for a 40" sealine at Djeno in the African Congo recently.

Following localized (i.e. hot-spot) ignition, there is a minimum pressure required for combustion to propagate in water-based commercial explosives. The latter is usually referred to as the ‘Minimum Burning Pressure’ (MBP) of the explosive. In the present work, both an apparatus based on hot-wire ignition and an associated methodology were developed to measure the MBP of water-based explosives. It was demonstrated that the MBP constitutes a sharp pressure threshold below which the probability of inducing sustained burning in these explosives becomes very small. It was found that each emulsion explosive tested has a distinct MBP value, which depends critically on its formulation. It appears that this test may offer a firm basis for the classification of emulsion explosives for regulatory purposes.

The cessation of testing of any nuclear explosive devices in all environments is the goal of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. In order to assure compliance with such a treaty, an international monitoring system has been proposed. This system will include seismic, infrasound, hydroacoustic and radionucleide monitors located throughout the world. The goal of this system is the detection of any nuclear test. In preparation for this treaty, a series of monitoring system tests, focusing primarily on seismic observations, have been undertaken. The most recent of these tests, Group of Scientific Experts Technical Test Three (GSETT-3), provides valuable data for assessing future monitoring systems. During the course of this experiment, seismic events associated with earthquakes, nuclear explosions and mining explosions have been recorded. This presentation will discuss the numbers and types of mining explosions triggering the system, in a particular area. Possible implications for the mining industry will be explored.

Description of Project: The four photos show a chimney blasting operation in Vienna’s district of Floridsdorf on May 4 2011. The blasting was done with two types of charges. An internal charge provided a force of blast which resulted in 135 single electrical blasting caps initiated detonations on the basic ensured the straight collapse of the chimney. The preparation work was done by reserve force military engineers. The series of photos were shot by Elisabeth Zechmeister. She works in the Austrian DOD but not as a professional photographer; much more she did all activities in her spare time.
