Deformation in a material at any temperature is known to consist of two major components - a reversible (elastic) part and an irreversible part (often called plastic). What is not universally known is the fact that at high temperatures greater than about 0.4Tm, where Tm, is the melting point in Kelvin, the reversible part includes not only elastic but also a delayed elastic (recoverable but time dependent) component. A very simple computational model is presented here for a constant-strain stress relaxation test (SRT) on the basis of a three-component constant-stress rheological equation derived from strain relaxation and recovery test (SRRT) data. It is shown that the rapid stress reduction during the early periods of relaxation when the stresses are high is governed primarily by delayed elasticity irrespective of the imposed strain level. This is in contradiction to the popular concept prevailing today. The asymptotic approach to a quasi-stable stress rate at longer times and lower stresses is, however, controlled by viscous flow (power-law creep). The validity of the theory is examined by comparing the predictions with experimental results obtained for a titanium-base alloy Ti-6246 at 0.45Tm.

Durant les années 1955 à 1961, plusieurs campagnes d?exploration ont été menées sur la zone Bond dans la partie sud-ouest de l?anneau nord de la carbonatite d?Oka (propriété de Niocan, figure 1). Les zones minéralisées HWM1 et HWM2 sont découvertes à l?ouest de la propriété. Un des forages, le S-60, avait intercepté 80 mètres de minéralisation à 0.71% Nb2O5 à l?est des zones HWM1 et HWM2 mais aucun autres travaux d?exploration n?avaient été réalisés sur cette interception minéralisée. En 1995, Niocan réalise une campagne de forage pour mieux définir la zone minéralisée recoupée par le forage S-60. En 1997, une seconde campagne de forage détermine un tonnage de 14.37 Mt avec une teneur de 0.66 % Nb2O5 pour la zone S-60 (Marcotte et Gagnon, 1997). Le complexe carbonatitique d'Oka se situe à environ 35 km à l?ouest de Montréal sur la rive nord du lac des Deux-Montagnes. Sa formation remonte au Crétacé précoce (entre 117 à 123 Ma). La carbonatite d?Oka fait partie de la suite d'intrusions alcalines que constituent les collines Montérégiennes. Le complexe a une forme allongée (7.2 km par 2.4 km) orientée NO-SE (figure 1). Il est intrusif dans des roches précambriennes constituées d?anorthosites au nord et de gneiss charnokitique au sud (Gold, 1963) appartenant à la Formation de la colline d?Oka. Les gneiss au contact du complexe sont fénitisés sur une épaisseur qui peut atteindre jusqu?à 60 mètres. Les roches carbonatitiques forment la série dominante du complexe et elles sont composées principalement de calcite (> 50 %) à gros grain et parfois rubanées. Les minéraux accessoires les plus communs sont la biotite, le pyroxène, la monticellite, la magnétite, l?apatite, la forstérite, la mélilite, le pyrochlore, la pérovskite, la niocalite, la pyrite et la pyrrhotite (Gold, 1963).

"In January 2012, AngloGold Ashanti Córrego do Sítio Mineração, with assistance from Sherritt International Corporation, commissioned a new autoclave for pressure oxidation of refractory gold concentrate at the Córrego do Sítio operation in Brazil. Start-up of the plant occurred in a few weeks and enhanced gold recovery was realized almost immediately, with 94% gold extraction achieved in carbon in leach (CIL), compared to less than 70% without pressure oxidation. This paper describes start-up and commissioning of the plant and provides an overview of plant performance over the last five years.INTRODUCTION In 2008, AngloGold Ashanti purchased the former São Bento property from Eldorado Gold, which, along with AngloGold Ashanti’s existing Córrego do Sítio mine, was renamed AngloGold Ashanti Córrego do Sítio Mineração (AGA Mineração). Later that year, the Sherritt Technologies division of Sherritt International Corporation (Sherritt) was contacted to begin batch and continuous pilot plant tests to determine the amenability of the AGA Mineração refractory gold concentrates to the pressure oxidation process. Based on the results of the batch and pilot plant tests, AGA Mineração requested basic and detailed engineering studies to be conducted by Sherritt, eventually leading to commissioning of the plant in January 2012. AGA Mineração’s plant is located in southeastern Brazil in the state of Minas Gerais, near the city of Belo Horizonte. AGA Mineração`s Phase 1 mine plan covers three sites in the Laranjeiras, Carvoaria Velha and Cachorro Bravo ore bodies, and is designed to process 60,000 tonnes of refractory gold concentrate per year to produce 140,000 ounces of gold per year with an 11 year life of mine (AngloGold Annual Financial Statements, 2010). Recovery of gold at AGA Mineração is based on Sherritt`s pressure oxidation technology for refractory gold concentrates (Berezowsky et al., 1991; Collins et al., 2011a; Collins et al., 2011b). This process had previously been applied to the recovery of gold at the São Bento site (Carvalho et al., 1988; de Silva et al., 1989), in a plant that was operational between 1986 and 2007 (Silva et al., 2004)."

Mines today use various methods of mining to extract ore. Because of the dangerous nature of many of these processes, remotely controlled LHD machines are being used to extract the ore from the draw point. The remote control system, although being made safer all the time, has remained virtually unchanged for many years. The basic functionality is an operator switching the machine to remote control, getting out of the cab, walking up a stand, operating remotely, returning to the cab, switching to manual, driving manually, switching to remote, and switching to manual. It seems repetitive, and time consuming, does it not? Networking, convergence, video, voice, and data infrastructures, and other technologies are growing by leaps and bounds in virtually every industry and region, except for mining. From the comfort of the living room couch, a Canadian can play hockey online with full voice conversations over the Internet with someone in Russia in real time. Yet, a mine superintendent must jump through hoops to have a private conversation with the front line supervisor underground. "Is Joe around anywhere?" If Joe hears the message, he will respond. If not, who knows? Maybe he's hurt. Maybe he's not. Where is Joe? Nobody really knows, and that is scary. Today, surface knows that the workers disappeared into the cage at 7:00 a.m. They also know that the workers will probably and hopefully return at 3:00 p.m. Is there not a better way to handle this? With such a complex industry, it seems as if, for the most part, the introduction of new technology into mining has either been overlooked or has been met with some resistance. It is time to step back, look at the process, and see how it can be improved. Key areas of focus will be safety, productivity, dependability, and cost-effectiveness.

"Abstract - Biotite from aplite that appears to have crystallized simultaneously with disseminated Cu-Mo mineralization at MacLeod Lake in northern Quebec yields K-Ar dates in the range 2032 ± 44 Ma to 2097 ± 47 Ma. The mean value, 2065 Ma, is some 400 Ma younger than the 2485 ± 64 Ma date obtained from a hornblende concentrate separated from a granodiorite sill that is spatially, but apparently not genetically, associated with the disseminated Cu-Mo deposit. The mean biotite date of 2065 Ma at MacLeod Lake, a K-Ar date of 2055 Ma reported from an area 50 km east of MacLeod Lake and published dates of about 2000 Ma for galenas from the Chibougamau Cu-Au ores, suggest a widespread thermal and mineralization event, in that part of the Superior Province east of James Bay, that differs from the common late Archean mineralization that is related to volcanism and metamorphic-intrusive activity.Sommaire - Les datations au K-Ar sur des biotites qui auraient cristallise en même temps que la minéralisation disséminée en Cu et Mo dans une aplite mise en place au Lac MacLeod, au nord du Québec, s'échelonnent entre 2032 ± 44 Ma et 2097 ± 47 Ma. The contribution presents a new finite element approach in which the common updated Lagrangian formulation is replaced by a spatial flow formulation applying a special arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian for-mulation (ALE). The description separates spatially the process in a die inside zone and in a profile zone. For the description of the inside zone, where the filling process occurs, a special Euler time independent mesh is applied. By this formulation the mesh has to be generated only once, which simplifies the generation of spatially optimized meshes. For mapping of the material flow during the filling process the method uses a flow surface traction method as applied in casting simulations. A further strength of the new method is the computational efficiency which allows the modelling of extrusion process with the highest complexity with a response time of 12 hours, which is important for the industrial optimization process.

The paper presents a survey of the possibilities of the simulation techniques for improving the design and operation of gold processing plants. The procedure to construct kinetic models that are used in simulators is first reviewed, and examples are given for cyanide gold dissolution and gold adsorption on carbon. Then, an overview of the structures of the plant simulators is proposed, and the simulation equations formulated for a carbon-in-leach process. Finally, the potential of simulation methods is illustrated by four examples. The first one shows how it is possible to use a simulator to design a cascade of leaching tanks while optimizing an economic performance criterion. The second one illustrates the role of simulators for optimal tuning of the cyanide addition strategy in a leaching circuit. The third example focuses on the power of simulation to design carbon transfer strategies in a carbon-in-pulp process. Finally, the last example shows the role of on-line simulators for optimally supervising the automatic control of cyanide addition into leaching tanks.

"Porcupine Peninsular mine is at the extreme southwestern end of North peninsula in Night Hawk lake, Cody township, Ontario. It lies approximately 10 miles east of the gold-producing district of Porcupine.Gold in quartz veins was discovered on Gold -island in Night Hawk lake in 1906, the same year in which the now famous Porcupine gold camp was discovered farther west. Most of the claims now held by the Company were originally staked by Charles Auer in 1907, In 1910 when the level of the lake was exceptionally low, gold was discovered in a quartz vein near the shore and close to the present mine shaft.The mine is developed by a main shaft to a depth of 440 feet, with levels at 80, 180, 300, and 425 feet vertical depth and by a winze to 630 feet. A mill of 200 tons daily capacity was built during 1923, Production commenced on January 4, 1924, and continued without interruption to May 31; 1926, when operations were suspended due to a decrease in the grade of ore. Total production amounted to 27,416 ounces of gold from 99,708 tons of ore, an average grade of 0.275 oz. a ton. Diamond drilling and re-sampling of the mine during 1934 and 1935 indicated approximately 1,480,000 tons, having an average grade of 0.123 oz. gold a ton, above the 625-foot level."

"The effect of thermomechanical processing (TMP) including cold working by tension or rolling before aging on mechanical properties and a dispersion of secondary phase particles of an AA2519 alloy (Al–5.64Cu–0.33Mn–0.23Mg–0.15Zr–0.11Ti–0.09V–0.08Fe–0.01Si (wt. %)) was examined. It was shown that the use of tension to impart pre-strain =10% in the alloy provides the best combination of properties in peak aging condition of the material. The AA2519T87 alloy processed by tension exhibits the yield stress, ultimate tensile strength and elongation to failure of 425.4±2.4, 475±2.4, 12.1±0.4, respectively. The one pass rolling leads to -5% decreases in yield stress and –20% decreases in ductility. Dislocations serve as heterogeneous nucleation sites for ?'-phase precipitation. The positive effect of tension is attributed to the formation of more homogeneous dislocation structure, uniform distribution of ?'-phase particles with higher aspect ratio. Precipitation of the O–phase plates on {111}a habit plane was detected. In addition it was shown that the low angle boundaries are heterogeneous nucleation sites for ?' and O particles.INTRODUCTION Precipitation-hardened alloys are a commercially important group of the materials because their mechanical properties can be modified by treating and changing the microstructure. Age-hardenable aluminum alloys belonging to the Al–Cu–Mg system are widely used due to their attractive combination of high specific strength, good fracture toughness and enhanced creep resistance attributed to the highly efficient strengthening by the ?'-phase (Palmer, StJohn, Nie, & Qian, 2017). An AA2519 alloy exhibiting superior mechanical properties among high-strength Al–Cu alloys (2XXX-serie) due to minor Mg additives. It is known that, in alloys with high Cu/Mg ratio (=5.6) the classic precipitation sequence (Palmer et al., 2017; Wang & Starink, 2005; Wang et al., 2010) of supersaturated solid solution (SSSS) decomposition occurs: SSSS ? Linepipe steels have come a long way in the past forty years. In fact, modern, high strength steels for large diameter linepipe applications represent one of the seminal accomplishments in metallurgy of the past half-century. The synergy of advanced steelmaking, alloy design including microalloying, hot rolling, and interrupted accelerated cooling has led to the marvelous steels being used today. The drive for higher performance pipelines has been motivated by the energy sector of our global economy who wanted both higher throughput capacity, i.e., larger diameters and higher pressures, and lower material cost, i.e., relatively thinner gauge wall thicknesses. These requirements led to new steels with higher strengths, better toughness and improved weldability. The goal of this paper is to trace the evolution of linepipe steels from the X60 grades of the small diameter pipelines of the 1960s to the (X80 - X120) grades used in the large diameter pipelines of today. The metallurgical triumphs permitting this success story, e.g., clean steel practices, controlled rolling, microalloying with Nb, and using IAC to obtain low temperature transformation products, will be highlighted and discussed.

To determine the optimal circuit configuration for gravity gold recovery consideration should be given to a range of factors in addition to the efficiency of the gravity circuit, including capital costs, ease of operation and impact on comminution. The most common gravity gold circuits utilise a centrifugal concentrator treating a portion of the hydrocyclone underflow. This paper will examine this option and alternative circuit configurations to illustrate the effect of various gravity circuit feed and tailings configurations on the equipment sizing, capital costs, operating costs, water balance, comminution efficiency and gravity gold recovery. The optimum circuit configuration can provide reduced capital and operating costs, maximise gravity gold recovery and improve comminution efficiency.

Vanadium has been produced from both primary and secondary sources having various compositions. Vanadium pentoxide and vanadium trioxide are the most available and known sources of vanadium oxides. In this paper, an overview of leaching both oxides has been reported. The problem of vanadium pentoxide leaching under acid conditions is the low solubility of the dissolved vanadium. This was investigated and then supplemented with further studies of leaching at mildly basic pH’s as well as under acid reductive leaching conditions (to form vanadium (IV)). Atmospheric oxidative leaching of vanadium trioxide was investigated using oxygen and ferric ion as the oxidant. It was shown that the leaching of vanadium trioxide using oxygen is very slow; however, ferric ion can dramatically increase the kinetics and leach efficiency.

Aluminum coatings can provide galvanic cathodic protection for several metals and alloys, In order to be a suitable protective solution on structural components, the mechanical integrity of the component must be preserved, In particular, fatigue properties are a challenge for thermal-spray protective coatings on mechanical structures, To address the issue of the fatigue integrity of 7075 aluminum alloy with an arc-sprayed protective coating, different surface preparations prior to arc spraying were considered, In the present work, a feasibility study was performed using laser ablation as a surface-preparation technique before or during arc spraying of coatings, This was collaborative effort between the LERMPS laboratory in France, the National Research Council Canada and the Royal Military College of Canada, Both fatigue and adhesive properties of aluminum coatings were evaluated in relation to substrate-surface-preparation techniques including laser ablation (Protal® process), grit blasting and shot peening. Results indicate that a combination of key conditions, including the use of nitrogen as the arc spray gas, shot peening, and proper laser energy density for ablation, provide high fatigue resistance of metallic coated 7075 alloy substrates. Specimens prepared under these conditions show a similar fatigue resistance to uncoated substrates.

An open-pit mine, located in Mexico, processes an ore a rate of 4000 tpd, using conventional cyanidation and AYR. A laboratory study was conducted to increase silver extraction and to reduce the concentration of cyanide in leaching. The sample contained 0.41 g/t Au, 125 g/t Ag, 99% gangue minerals, 0.7% pyrite, 0.07% sphalerite, 0.03% chalcocite. Silver was present as acanthite, stromeyerite, silver mercury/halogen, silver with copper in solid solution and jalpaite. The plant conditions (2400 ppm NaCN) produced 90.2% gold extraction (residue at 0.04 g/t Au) and 92.7% silver extraction (leach residue at 9.1 g/t Ag). The CELP (CANMET Enhanced Leaching Process) produced 97.0% silver extraction (residue at 3.8 g/t) and 90.2% gold extraction using 500 ppm NaCN. The incremental gross revenue was estimated at $US7.6 million and the reduction of cyanide costs was $2.9 million per year (79%).

POSCO installed a new 100 ton oxygen bottom-blown converter in 2013 for the development of new steelmaking process named as PS-BOP which is reading POSCO-Saarstahl Basic Oxygen Process. This process was developed by the collaboration research between POSCO and Saarstahl AG in Germany that is based on substantial increase of CO post combustion in a converter by blowing hot air from the top of converter. The collaboration research has been finished successfully in November 2013 with 17% decrease in hot metal ratio (HMR) when hot air was blown from the top of the oxygen bottom-blown converter. After the collaboration research the converter has been tried to be operated as oxygen top and bottom-blown converter to reduce bottom wear and to decrease production cost with increased use of low cost Fe source by the help of increased CO post combustion. The presentation includes experience on the start up of oxygen bottom-blown converter, HMR reduction trials with hot air top blowing and transition from oxygen bottom-blown to top and bottom-blown converter operation.

The Saganoseki flash furnace was built in 1973. The steel frames of the flash furnace were designed to absorb the expansion of refractories and contain expansion-absorbing materials between their frames and the skin plate. Expansion and deformation resulted in the furnace settler because of the repeated increase and decrease in temperature from more than 30 maintenance shutdowns. Preliminary investigations were conducted to confirm the condition of the settler, and it was found that partial cracks accompanied the expansion in the lower layer of the refractories. As a result, the risk of molten-matte leakage increased. Based on the above investigation, it was decided that the entire settler should be replaced by introducing a spring-displacement structure that was capable of maintaining the furnace integrity over an extended period. The difficult redesign and rebuilding of the Saganoseki flash furnace was accomplished successfully and safely in 76 days from September to December 2017, as planned. Because of various redesigns, the furnace was changed to a flash-smelting furnace that can withstand higher thermal loads based on recent trends of copper concentrate with increased sulfur and reduced copper. The new furnace is operating smoothly at present. INTRODUCTION The flash-smelting furnace of Pan Pacific Copper Co., Ltd. Saganoseki Smelting & Refinary commenced operation in 1973, with an original designed feeding rate of 71 t/h. As a result of facility remodeling and operational improvements, shown in Figure 1, the feeding rate was increased to 215 t/h in recent years. After more than 40 years of operation, the original settler in the melt holding section of the flash furnace underwent significant expansion and deformation.

The present discussions throughout the civilized world on the subject of gold for monetary purposes may seem due to general economic conditions during the past year. But for some years previously a small group of authorities had warned the world against the continued disregard of an equitable distribution of existing gold reserves, and had urged the necessity of keeping the supply of new gold equal to the monetary demand, which, according to world production and trade figures, increases on the average about 3 per cent per annum. In 1927, Sir John Aird, the President of The Canadian Bank of Commerce, stated that the United States could spare a billion dollars of the supply it then held, 4 ½ billion dollars. About a year and a half ago the Professor of Banking and Currency in the University of London, Mr. T. E. Gregory, said, "If the world finds it impossible to modify its habits so far as to make an organized effort to economize gold seem less Utopian, it must be prepared to pay for its bad habits, in this and other respects, by a possible loss of material welfare." These clear-cut statements were not heeded, perhaps for one reason because most countries were in the flush of prosperity, and making such great demands upon the mining fraternity for industrial materials as to distract attention, at least to some degree, from gold mining. Now the world knows it faces serious problems, first, of making? fully effective its present monetary reserves, which, although badly distributed, are as a whole ample for the needs of the present, and secondly, of preventing a shortage in the supply of new gold, one that may come within the next few years if the present sources of supply are not enlarged, and if there is no marked change in the technique of gold production.

"A regional till sampling program in the Upsalquitch Forks-Tetagouche Lakes area, centred some 70km west of the city of Bathurst, has proven an effective method for gold exploration in the heavily glaciated interior of northern New Brunswick. Prospecting activities within this area over the past three years, have led to the discovery of several gold occurences associated with quartz-carbonate alteration in a variety of intrusive rock types emplaced along major fault zonesQuaternary mapping shows that the glacial history is complex. However, the displacement of material is uniform in distance and direction, and the till is generally thin (0.5 m to 2.0 m) and locally derived, making the interpretation of till geochemical patterns relatively simple for the explorationist. Previous studies have shown the the fin e-grained gold is best detected in the -250 mesh (-0.063 mm) till fraction (clay plus silt) and that the C-horizon is the preferred medium for analyses.Samples were collected on a 2 km grid and analyzed f or Cu, Pb, Zn, Au, Ag, As, Sb, Mn, Fe, Ni, Co, and Cd. Results indicate that concentrations of 10 to 20 ppb Au can effectively delineate areas of anomalous gold in bedrock associated with fault structures, and that a good potential for discoveries exists to the west of the known occurrences, where up to 678 ppb A u has been detected in tills. IntroductionThis paper reports on the result s of surficial geological investigations conducted over the past two field seasons in north-central New Brunswick. The stud y area is located in the Upsalquitch Forks-Tetagouche Lakes map area s (N.T.S. 21 0 19 and 21 0 (10) 70 km west of the city of Bathurst (Fig. I). The area is situated on the margin of the New Brunswick Highlands and has a maximum elevation of 640 m (for a detailed description of the physiography, see Rampton et al. 1984).Historically, exploration in northern New Brunswick has concentrated on base metals within the Cambro-Ordovician Tetagouche Group, resulting in the discovery of man y significant massive sulphide deposits (Brunswick No.6 and No. 12, Heath Steele, Caribou, Armstrong Brook, Orvan Brook, McMaster, Murray Brook, and Restigouche). Auriferous base metal occurrences along the Rocky Brook-Millstream Fault have also been previously investigated."
