Viburnum, located in the foothills of the Ozarks in south-east Missouri, is the site of a modern lead mining and milling operation. Two mines are currently producing a total of 5,000 tons per day and a third mine is in the final development stage, with full production scheduled for late this year (1964). These mines will supply the tonnage required to keep the Viburnum mill operating at a full capacity of 7,000 tons per day for many years. The efficient underground mining operation is completely trackless. Drill jumbos are used to break the ore in a room and pillar method of mining. Transloaders, or St. Joe shovels, and trucks do the loading and hauling. The Viburnum mill has a world-wide reputation as a most efficient operation. This is due to the extensive use of automatic process controls, and labour saving materials handling facilities. Past attempts to establish an integrated steel industry on the West Coast of Canada have been unsuccessful for at least three reasons: (a) insufficient reserves of a suit-able iron ore supply; (b) a relatively small local market for iron and steel; and (c) the non-availability of an economical process to produce primary iron on a small scale. Today, the reserves of economically mineable ore deposits are ample to support a steel production of 100,000 to 200,-000 tons per annum. The local market has increased so as to be able to absorb most of this capacity. With-in the next few years, a small integrated steel plant, including the "H-Iron" direct iron ore reduction process for electric furnace charge stock production, will be able to show a profitable operation. "Raman spectroscopy is used to quantify the extent of disorder in the carbonaceous matter associated with preg-robbing ores. Previous studies of Goldstrike ores showed that the height and width of the peaks for the “D” (disordered) and “G” (graphite) bands, the so-called “Raman ratio” had a strong correlation to the preg-robbing value (PRV) measured for various ore samples. A brief literature review on Raman spectroscopy as it applies to preg-robbing ores is presented. Further, recent studies, presented here, have shown no correlation between the Raman ratio and the PRV for a wide variety of ores. This suggests that the extent of organic carbon crystal disorder is not the main factor in determining preg-robbing characteristics.INTRODUCTION Valuable base metals, such as nickel, cobalt, molybdenum, vanadium and tungsten, are used in a wide range of important technological applications. The demand for many of these metals has increased significantly over the last few decades, driven especially by economic expansion in Asia generally and China in particular. This has led in turn to a large growth in the output of mines in order to satisfy this increasing demand, as shown by the data in Table 1 (USGS, 1994, 2014). These data reflect an even longer trend of growth of these metals, with nickel, for example, showing an average rate of 5.3% per year from 1980 until 2015 (International Nickel Study Group, 2017). This rapid and sustained rate of growth means that annual mine outputs for nickel, tungsten, molybdenum and vanadium have had to double roughly every 11 to 14 years, whilst cobalt mine output has had to double roughly every 7 years, over the period from 1994 until 2014. With the average working life of a nickel mine being between 17 and 22 years (Statista, 2017), this means that from the time a nickel mine opens until it closes, the industry needs to find the equivalent of another three or four mines of a similar output to satisfy this relentless growth in demand for the metal."

"The closure of the iron and steel making plant at Consett in Durham in 1980 marked the end of an era-a long era in the world's iron and steel making history. Iron had been smelted in the Tyne-Wear area of the United Kingdom since before the Roman period, but apart from evidence of smithing in the Roman period, the historical evidence for iron production on a large scale dates from the 14th century.The paper describes sites in the area that first worked the bloomery process and then, in the 16th century, as did most of Europe, graduated to the blast furnace process. The main emphasis is on the early introduction of coal to iron making at the end of the 18th century and the use of the steam engine to render integrated sites possible.IntroductionIron has been smelted in the Tyne-Wear area of the United Kingdom since before the Roman period, but apart from clear evidence of smithing in the Roman period, the historical evidence for iron production on a large scale dates from the 14th century. Like many other countries, the United Kingdom benefitted from the visits of foreign observers, such as Jars, Svedenstierna, de la Houliere and Dufrenoy, who left detailed records. Iron ore, limestone, wood, coal and water power were all found a short distance away from the main valleys of the Tyne and Wear. The main sources of iron ore were the coal measures, with rider ores from the lead vein s in Alston and Weardale, and carbonate ores from shale horizons in the Carboniferous limestone. Good coking coal was available from West Durham and reasonable coal from the Tyne valley and Northumberland limestone. Limestone was plentiful."

"In June 1985, Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering (CSRME) was established. During the past 30 years, various major achievements are made in the discipline of rock mechanics and rock engineering field, especially in the last ten years. This paper will discuss the main rock engineering progress in association with China National Science and Technology Awards, “973 Program”, and “Tan Tjongkie Lecture”. The current status of rock engineering in China and some hot problems are summarized. Furthermore, some suggestions are given for addressing those problems. INTRODUCTIONThe modern concept of rock mechanics and engineering was initiated and developed after the Second World War. In this regard, the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) was established in 1962, subsequently further promotes its development. In June 1985, the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering was established. Various chief scientists, including professors Tan Tjangkie, Pan Jiazheng, Sun Jun, Wang Sijing, Qian Qihu, have made their huge efforts to the development of Rock Mechanics and Engineering in terms of the large-scale rock engineering projects in China.The achievements in the last 30 years significantly promote the development of China in different fields, such as energy, transportation, national defense and other national economy and major infrastructure facilities (Wang et al. 2004; Qian 2010, 2011). In other words, these projects also promoted the science and technology progress in rock mechanics and engineering across the world. Reviewing and analyses of the experiences on those key rock projects are beneficial to its technological development. She and Dong (2013), in view of literature statistical analysis, discussed the status and research progress in rock mechanics field associated with the last 30-year China's developments, including the rock strength and deformation theory, rock fracture and damage mechanics, the constitutive relation of rock dynamics, rock field coupling, rock reinforcement and stability analysis, etc. The challenging issues in rock mechanics were also proposed, which are the main concerns in rock engineering practices, engineering exploration, design, construction and operation."

When roasting started at Giant Yellowknife Mines in 1949, it became apparent that, to prevent air and water pollution in the surrounding district, it would be necessary to collect the arsenic that was contained in the exit gases of the roaster. The arsenic collection problem was finally solved by the installation of both electrostatic and baghouse collectors. It was realized that a considerable quantity of gold-bearing dust was leaving the roaster with the exit gases. When the collection problem was solved, it was possible to measure this loss. The loss proved to be considerable and it became evident that a substantial quantity of gold could be recovered. Research programs on dust treatment began in 1958, and by May, 1960, the treatment process which is currently being followed was started in the plant. At present, the two electrostatic preci11itators, Operated at temperatures above 600°F, collect the gold-bearing dust.

"To optimize gold recovery in complex leach-to-electrowinning processes, Gekko Systems developed the Gekko resin exchange column (G-REX) as an intermediate step, using a highly gold-selective resin to isolate contaminant metals. The AuRIX®100 resin produced by Purolite is licensed exclusively to Gekko, with the G-REX column designed specifically for this resin. Operational experience has been gained at the Castlemaine Goldfields Ballarat gold mine. In near-continuous operation since 2008, the Ballarat plant treats unclarified concentrate leach solution. The extension of this technology to higher throughputs and more complex chemistry is discussed.RÉSUMÉ Afin d’optimiser la récupération de l’or dans des procédés complexes impliquant la lixiviation suivie de l’extraction électrolytique, Gekko Systems a développé la colonne Gekko de résines échangeuses d’ions (G-REX) comme étape intermédiaire, à l’aide d’une résine hautement sélective pour la récupération de l’or qui permet d’isoler les métaux contaminants. The higher end of the pH scale produces the best selectivity according to the order of preference: Au > Ag > Hg > Zn > Ni > Cu > Co > Fe. Purolite produces the resin and Gekko Systems maintains licensing of AuRIX100 resin for use in its G-REX column, as part of its unique suite of gravity gold–handling equipment.Significant cost savings over carbon-in-solution (CIS) systems are realized with AURIX100 resin: approximately 4–12% in capital savings and 27–40% in operating costs (Virnig, Mackenzie, Katsikaros, & Gray, 2004). Additionally, AuRIX100 resin is not susceptible to fouling; that is, the resin does not load with inorganic salts or organic compounds that would affect the loading and extraction of precious metals. To counter any potential for fouling by inorganic salts, a dilute acid wash is periodically conducted in service on the resin to unblock resin pores."

Stone that may be applied to purposes of construction is available in nearly all the inhabited parts of Canada, the most important exception being the prairie region, but, even here, the deficiency is overcome in many parts by a wealth of glacial field-stones. In many parts of the country, also, the accessible stone is of a quality so poor that brick is more generally used. There is a great difference, however, between stone that 'may be used' and stone suitable for buildings of a monumental type or even for 'trimmings' on the better class of dwelling in the cities and towns. It is in the latter sense that the expression 'building stone' is commonly used. Thus restricted the term includes varieties of sandstone, limestone, and granite, using the latter word in the custom of the quarryman, not only for the true granite of the geologist but for many other igneous rocks as well. Building stone of high quality grades imperceptibly into stone suitable for monuments, particularly in the case of the granites. The present review will deal with building and monumental stone in this restricted sense and will omit marble, although that material has been used to some extent for building. For instance, the Great West block in Winnipeg is built of marble from British Columbia.

Arsenic is a highly toxic compound that is naturally found in the environment and is released through the processing of sulphide minerals. Arsenate (As5+) is less toxic than arsenite (As3+) and is soluble in water but can form insoluble precipitates when metal ions are present. The arsenic removal processes used in industry assume that arsenic is in its pentavalent state. Hydrogen peroxide can be employed to oxidize arsenite; however, it is expensive. It has been shown that activated carbon can be used to catalyze the oxidation of arsenite with oxygen as the only consumed reagent at ambient conditions with an efficiency of 99% in less than 24 hours. The mechanism which oxidizes arsenite is not yet understood; however, this study shows that a strong oxidizing agent is formed in-situ. The species and amount of oxidant formed were determined via iodimetric titration and electrochemical methods. The production of oxidant was optimized by comparing the amount of oxidant formed in-situ to the relative amount of arsenite oxidized.

Uranium mines in Washington State include the producing Midnite and Sherwood mines and several mined-out deposits, the most productive of which was the Daybreak mine. The Midnite mine is generally classified as a hydrothermal deposit consisting of tabular orebodies in Precambrian pelitic and calcareous metasedimentary host rocks. The host rocks occur as roof pendants in a Cretaceous porphyritic quartz monzonite intrusive; the quartz monzonite averages 12 ppm U308 The uranium deposit appears to have undergone a complex genesis, involving a series of depositional and enrichment stages. The Sherwood uranium deposit, approximately 4 miles south of the Midnite mine, occurs near the bottom of a basal Late Cretaceous to Paleocene arkosic conglomerate. The conglomerate lies nonconformably on the porphyritic quartz monzonite that is associated with the Midnite deposit. The Sherwood and Midnite uranium deposits may have had a similar genetic history linked by a common uraniferous pluton source, ground-water action, and/or leaching of uranium-rich ash flows from now-eroded, overlying, Eocene volcanics. The Daybreak deposit, in northeastern Spokane County, consists entirely of secondary uranium mineralization (metaautunite) in a quartz monzonite pluton. Mineralization is confined to a low-angle fault zone and is most highly concentrated at the intersection of primary and secondary shears. Both hydrothermal and ground-water origins are feasible. Besides the Midnite-Sherwood area, 14 other areas in the western Okanogan Highlands physiographic province and Cascades region have favourable characteristics for uranium potential. Criteria include the existence of uranium occurrences, Tertiary basin sediments with intercalated volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks, favourable geochemical data, alkaline plutons associated with uranium occurrences or borders of Tertiary basins, and structural controls.

?Demand-side measure" means a rate, measure, action or program undertaken to conserve energy or promote energy efficiency?? (BCUC, 1996) In actual economical environment, business sustainability requires high-efficiency technological processes. That is why the efficiency concept has to be present at all levels of industrial activities. Nowadays, some purchasing decisions are still driven predominately by the purchase price, in spite of the evidence that such price represents up to 5 % to 7 % of the total costs of ownership with full consequences of energy efficiency and the impact on total ownership costs. The paper presents essentials of converter types and basics of the Global Efficiency (GEff) Concept that has been promoted over the last few years in South African industries (Pitis et al., 2006/7). GEff concept is proven as a useful tool used on price-efficiency decisions. Theoretical and technical aspects of this concept were substantiated with case studies. First part presented in this paper will describe how GEff concept was used on price ? efficiency decisions when single input or direct converters and systems (considered as low value equipments) have been replaced. Besides the impact of energy savings and new innovative developments, the paper suggests general other benefits of: ? Technical and economical performance improvements and competitiveness of mining corporations to international standards; ? Defusing incipient energy crisis in the sector; ? Improving environmental conditions; ? Creating new job opportunities in mining sector. Proposed concept in this paper could be further developed as models of improving companies? corporate energy policies.

"Pure cadmium sulphide was leached by the action of the bacterium Thiobacillus thiooxidans in the presence of finely divided sulphur. The influence of time, temperature, pH and concentration of inoculum on the extent of the cadmium extraction was studied. Under optimum conditions, up to 72 per cent of the cadmium could be dissolved over a six-week period. A cursory study of the role played by elemental sulphur seems to indicate that its presence is essential but that the sul1>huric acid produced through its oxidation is a minor factor in the cadmium extraction."

"The Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC) is a federal Crown corporation which operates two coal mines (Phalen and Prince Collieries), a coal preparation plant, a railway, a central workshop and a deep water shipping facility.The Sydney coal field consists of 11 major seams, which range from 0.8 m to over 3.7 m in thickness. Of the 2.4 billion tonnes of known coal resources in the field, approximately 550 million tonnes can be mined with present mining technology. These parameters define reserves which extend more than 8 km beneath the ocean to a depth of 1200 m. With today’s design and present high production faces, the colliery life is projected at approximately 20 years."

In December 1977, a large pillar was removed by blasthole mining methods at lnco's Creighton No. 3 mine. Although the 2,363.000-ton blast was not a size record for a single underground blast at Inco, it did represent a significant departure from conventional blasthole mining. In terms of the application of nominal 6-inch-diameter boreholes underground, coupled with bulk slurry explosives, the magnitude of the blast is considered a first and very important development. The application of large-diameter boreholes in underground operations was first tried successfully in 1973. Since that time over 13/4 million feet have been drilled in this adaptation of an open-pit technique to underground operations. The blast, which required 708 holes, totalling 131,500 feet of drilling, was loaded in a six-week period, using special slurry handling techniques developed jointly by Inco and CIL. Inco operating and engineering personnel consider this application of large boreholes and slurry explosives for blasthole mining a very important milestone in modern mining technology.

"Glencore’s Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations in Falconbridge, Ontario, has been in operation since 1930. Many new technologies and practices, now common in the industry, have been implemented at the site and contribute significantly to the industry’s understanding. Since the last update on the Smelter operation published at the NiCo 2005 conference, the Converter Aisle has undergone significant changes in the operation of vessels. The Aisle continues to consist of 4 Peirce-Smith converters, but the Slag-Make Converter, and the Slag Cleaning Vessel have been re-tooled or re-built as Hybrid Vessels (HV), each generating matte for the two Finishing Converters and clean slag for disposal. The complicated scheduling and the overall benefits to the Smelter are reviewed here as part of the on-going tradition of industry support.INTRODUCTION The Glencore Nickel Sudbury Smelter operates a Roast Reduction Smelting (RRS) flow sheet with a specialized Converter Aisle operation that maximizes metal recovery to Bessemer matte. The main process equipment consists of a pair of Fluid Bed Roasters, a submerged-arc Electric Furnace and four Peirce-Smith converting type vessels (Figure 1). In the RRS flow sheet, concentrate is roasted with air to remove sulphur as SO2. Calcine from the Roasters is mixed with petroleum coke upon addition to the six-in-line rectangular Electric Furnace. The coke back reduces the metallic oxides, producing a matte and a discard slag.Gases from the Roasters are sent to a single pass absorption Acid Plant where the SO2 is converted to acid. Under the previous operating targets, approximately 70–75% of the sulphur in the incoming concentrate was fixed as acid with the balance going to the Electric Furnace in calcine for Bessemer matte production. Off-gases from the Electric Furnace and Converters are combined in a balloon flue, treated for particulates in electrostatic precipitators and discharged to the Smelter stack without any SO2 fixation."

"Since the Mathew's method for open stope design was first proposed by Golder Associates in 1980 it has been applied at a number of mine sites in Canada. The initial hypothesis was based on a relatively small amount of data and the intervening period has allowed the collection of a significant amount of new data to test the validity of the method.This paper examines a brief history of the evolution of rock mass classification systems to provide background and emphasize their empirical and non-rigorous approach. It also presents the new data which appear to indicate that the initial hypothesis was reasonably good. The modification to the original graph proposed by Potvin is discussed as well as the applicability of the method to predicting the onset of caving. The original graph has been updated and has been subdivided into four zones described as ""stable""; ""potentially unstable""; ""potential major failure""; and ""potential caving"". The method is recommended as a useful open stoping design tool provided it is recognized that it is not a rigorous design method.Finally the paper proposes a recommended approach for application of the method by would-be users and addresses some typical pitfalls that may be encountered."

"The presence, size, orientation, nature, and persistence of geological discontinuities dictate the behaviour of a rock mass. Block size, which is defined by discontinuity spacing, by the number of joint sets, and by the persistence of the discontinuities delineating potential blocks is an important indicator of the degree of fracturing of a rock mass. Consequently, block size is represented either explicitly or implicitly in all rock mass classification systems employed for analysis and design of surface and underground mining structures. Insitu block size distributions may provide a better means to describe the structural complexity of a rock mass. These are the distributions that would be derived if the in-situ rock mass was separated into its constitutive blocks, delineated by existing discontinuities, and each block measured. This paper presents the results of a field campaign at Louvicourt Mine aiming to characterize the rock mass using different methods for determining block size and block size distributions. IntroductionGeological structural data are used to provide input data for analysis and design methods for surface and underground structures. As the collection of structural data involves considerable investment of time and effort, it is sometimes overlooked, thus denying an important source of information for mine design. What is somewhat surprising, however, is that when structural data are available, they are not used to their full potential. Recent work has shown that data on block size have potential applications in different areas of rock engineering:• Blasting — Hudson (1993) has described the excavation process as the change of a preexisting natural block size distribution to the debris fragment size distribution (Fig. 1). Lizotte and Scoble (1994) have reviewed previous efforts on integrating site specific geological conditions into blast design. Grenon et al. (1997) provide a case study where in-situ block size distributions are compared to photogrammetric studies of blasted rock.• Rock mass classifications — Block size is used in the majority of rock mass classification systems either explicitly, as in the RMi classification system Palmstrøm (1995), or implicitly, such as in the NGI system, Barton et al. (1974)."

History The Con-Rycon mine is situated in the Yellowknife mining district, North West Territories, 608 air miles north of Edmonton, Alberta. The earliest reported discovery of gold in the area was made in 1898 but no extensive exploration occurred until 1928. The birth of Yellowknife as a mining community took place in 1934 with the staking of the Rich group and subsequent shipping of 16 tons of high grade ore. The Giant group was also among the claims staked in 1934, and later staking showed a tendency to close the gap between these two properties. In the fall of 1935, the A.Y.E. claims, situated south of the Giant group, were staked to cover a discovery of the Geological Survey of Canada and, after general release of the Survey's information, the adjoining ground was staked. These claims included the Con, Negus, Meg, and Kam groups. In 1936 four lapsed claims were re-staked as the P and G group and later acquired by Rycon Mines, Limited, controlled by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited. The Con and various adjacent groups owned by Cominco are now operated with the Rycon under one management. Surface trenching on the Con property started in 1936 and, during the fall and winter of 1936-37, a 60- foot 5 ft. by 9 ft. inclined prospect shaft was sunk. The encouragement provided by the shaft and diamond drilling in 1937 led to the decision to establish a mining plant, and in August, 1938, the 100-ton cyanide mill produced its first brick- the first gold brick poured in the history of the North West Territories. In November, 1938, the mill was enlarged to a 175-ton capacity and operated at this rate until 1941, when refractory ore was encountered. This situation was met by the installation of flotation and roasting units and, at the same time, the milling capacity was increased to 300 tons daily. Labour shortages and Government restrictions forced a reduction of output and in 1943 milling was suspended while mine development continued on a reduced scale throughout the war years. The present full-scale of operations was resumed in 1946 and the total production to the end of 1948 amounted to 288,853 oz. gold and 72,347 oz. silver.

"Advances in technology provide educators with valuable tools to enhance their teaching and efficiently deliver content to larger audiences. University educators are often encouraged to become more “research intensive” and to increase student enrollment. Faced with these pressures, there is a tendency to use technology to improve teaching efficiencies rather than to enhance existing teaching approaches. Practical learning in applied engineering courses would suffer greatly if hands-on experience is not emphasized. This paper discusses advantages and limitations of new technologies applied to learning, and methods to incorporate more hands-on experiential teaching techniques to applied mining engineering courses.RÉSUMÉ Les avancées technologiques fournissent aux éducateurs des outils intéressants pour rehausser leur enseignement et livrer efficacement de la matière à de grands auditoires. Les éducateurs universitaires sont souvent encouragés à devenir plus « axés sur la recherche » et d’augmenter l’inscription d’étudiants. Face à ces pressions, il y a une tendance à utiliser la technologie pour améliorer l’efficacité d’enseignement plutôt que de rehausser les approches existantes d’enseignement. L’apprentissage concret dans les cours d’ingénierie appliquée souffrirait grandement si l’accent n’est pas mis sur l’expérience pratique.
