Peak Gold Mine is a new gold and base metal mining project being developed by Enterprise Metals (a 100 per cent subsidiary of CRA) at Cobar in the centre of New South Wales. The Cobar district has a long history of copper and gold mining operations stretching back to the 1870s. Extensive gold and base metal mineralisation was discovered at the Peak in 1981 below a series of gold mines which had been active around the turn of the century. Evaluation of the deposit through the 1980s led to CRA's decision to develop the project for production at a capacity of 450 000 tonnes per annum in late 1992. The project has been developed with a green fields approach despite the long history of mining in the local area. This approach has lead to several innovative ideas being trialed at the site which are expected to result in the operation being a low cost producer of gold and base metals.

Tube bundle monitoring systems have come a long way from their first introduction to coal mining in the late 1960s/1970s. Early developments in the United Kingdom (UK) commenced with single gas analysers (carbon monoxide) and quickly moved towards introducing oxygen analysers and methane analysers for improved analysis, in particular the calculation of air-free results. Recommendations were made in the early days as to how and where to run tubes and on the matching of sample pump and purge pump pressures. Current Australian installations are commonly based on a four-gas multianalyser, infrared for carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and methane, and paramagnetic for oxygen. These systems are controlled with programmable logic controllers (PLC), with component monitoring as an integral part of the software. This paper discusses the development of tube bundle systems from the 1960s to the current date and looks at the advantages and disadvantages of the installations, along with making operational recommendations to be considered with the siting of the analyser building, running of tubes and maintenance of the system.CITATION:Watkinson, M, 2015. Increased catch bench crest loss has been observed in recent years at Barrick’s Cowal Gold Mine situated in central New South Wales, Australia. A project was initiated to diagnose the cause of the crest loss, and evaluate ways to limit its effect on final walls.A range of different blast measurement techniques were utilised to evaluate the progressive damage caused to catch berms by presplit, production and trim blasts. Techniques employed included; single point vibration measurement, cross-hole seismic analysis, precision berm surveys, horizontal p-wave velocity measurements, crest loss volume calculation and water level changes between blasts.Blast measurements showed that the majority of damage to the catch berm was caused by the presplit blasts, which registered vibrations greater than 700 mm/s at 5 m behind the presplit line. As a result, considerable changes were made to the blast designs after a series of computer simulations via mechanistic blast modelling (MBM). The uncharged presplit collar was increased from 2 m to 4 m, and every second hole was left uncharged. Vibration modelling using a multiple seed wave (MSW) model was used to optimise trim blast delay timing. Burden relief was changed from 16 ms/m to 27 ms/m using one hole firing per 4 ms time window, and the initiation angle was changed from shallow to steep. These changes in the presplit loading and trim timing helped reduce catch bench crest loss by 1–2 m.Trim shots using a high strength bulk emulsion explosive were also identified as contributors to berm damage after analysis of blast monitoring and MBM modelling. The modelling study resulted in the generation of alternative blast designs to minimise the crest loss, including the use of low-density/low-velocity of detonation (VOD) bulk explosive product (Flexigel™ Advantage) in trim pattern designs. This was trialled on the Northern and Eastern pit walls to evaluate the damage to catch berms on final walls. The trials demonstrated that berm vibration was reduced significantly; fragmentation was similar (or slightly blockier) compared to the fragmentation using the old blast designs; displacement of the berm was reduced, so increased catch bench widths were attained. India, the second-largest steel manufacturer globally, achieved crude steel production of around 126 million tonnes (Mt) in the last financial year of April 2022 to March 2023 (FY23), against an installed capacity of 162 Mt. In its National Steel Policy, 2017, India has undertaken targets to take the crude steel production capacity to 300 Mt by 2030–2031 and production and demand to around 255 Mtpa, also by this deadline. The blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace (BF-BoF):electric arc furnace-induction furnace (EAF-IF) ratio in 2022 was at 44:56.

Traditionally, quality control of iron sinter has relied on time-consuming wet chemistry. However, the mineralogical composition that defines the physical properties, such as strength or reducibility, is not monitored.X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis in combination with Rietveld quantification and statistical data evaluation using partial least squares regression (PLSR) has been successfully trialled to determine the mineralogical composition and process parameters such as the FeO (Fe2+) content and basicity of iron sinter within an analysis time of less than eight minutes per sample. The results were compared with wet chemistry data.PLSR does not require pure phases, crystal structures or complex modelling of peak shapes. The analysis is therefore easy to set up and ideal if only one property needs to be analysed. PLSR results show an accuracy for the FeO content of ±0.3 per cent for the samples analysed in this case study.Both the PLSR and Rietveld methods take the full XRD pattern into account and can be simultaneously applied on the same measurement. PLSR was found to be the more robust method if only FeO and basicity results are required. The Rietveld method helps to predict other parameters, such as the compression strength of the sinter, by monitoring all existing phases (eg larnite C2S or silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminium phases).CITATION:König, U and Norberg, N, 2015. WMC Limited, owner/operator of Olympic Dam, the worldÆs largest underground uranium mine and the fourth largest underground copper mine has now completed an expansion that has been classed as a benchmark in the mining industry. To achieve a production increase from 3.4 to 9.25 Mtpa from an underground mining operation in two years was a major challenge, it was essential to review the overall materials handling system from æthe face to the stockpileÆ. The challenge was two-fold:How to deliver 30 000 tonne of ore per day to the processing plant, from a single underground mine? To provide the processing plant with a consistent metallurgical feed. This paper traces the transformation from the old to the new materials handling system at Olympic Dam.

Western Metals Mt Gordon Operation is a copper mine and processing plant situated 120 kilometres north of Mt Isa. The unique Mt Gordon copper process utilises a whole of ore acid/ferric pressure leach to produce copper cathode from the Esperanza massive sulfide copper orebody. Esperanza ore contains chalcocite, covellite and minor chalcopyrite hosted in a massive pyrite matrix. These ore stocks will be depleted in late 2003. Recently the process circuit has been upgraded to allow the treatment of lower grade Mammoth ores. These include the installation of a ball mill to complement the existing SAG mill, a single stage rougher flotation circuit and a tailings thickener. The leach bleed neutralisation plant was also upgraded at this time. Commissioning of these new circuits occurred in March 2003 and involved all the challenges of ensuring current production levels were successfully maintained while new process steps were incorporated into the whole circuit. This paper explains the background flow sheet of the patented Mt Gordon process and the reasoning behind the enhancements required for an already successful copper leaching circuit. Included are discussion of the influences of the new ores on individual process components such as comminution, leach chemistry and solid/liquid separation. Longer term ore processing options are also discussed.

Grade Engineering® involves the planning, integration and operation of coarse preconcentration techniques to reject uneconomic material as early as possible in the mining value chain to improve the quality of ore delivered to mineral processing activities. These preconcentration techniques include screening for natural and induced deportment of grade to finer size fractions during blasting and coarse breakage, sensor-based measurements of grade and mechanised sorting at particle or bulk scales and coarse gravity separation. Over the last decade, the Cooperative Research Centre for Optimising Resource Extraction (CRC ORE), with the support of its participants, has developed a framework for the holistic evaluation of economic and production impacts attributable to these preconcentration techniques. The framework combines the characterisation of preconcentration responses, geostatistical modelling, process modelling and simulation of downstream and upstream production impacts and the optimisation of strategic mine plans to quantify changes in net present value due to different preconcentration strategies. This framework has been applied to evaluate preconcentration techniques at numerous metalliferous operations and can also be used to quantify changes in the environmental metrics for energy, water and steel consumption and emission, tailings and waste rock production. This paper collates the results of these Grade Engineering® studies to show the range and magnitude of economic and environmental impacts attributable to preconcentration. The studies have shown that rejection of uneconomic material prior to mineral processing activities can have a pronounced improvement in energy, water and comminution steel productivity, emission intensity and the profitability of metalliferous mining.

The ownership, management and employment structures operating in the Australian minerals industry have dynamically evolved during the last 30 years. One of the most dramatic changes, from an exploration and mining geology perspective, is the reduction of in-house geological expertise and an ever increasing reliance on contract and consulting services.For all companies - big and small - two key issues resulting from these changes are the management of core geological intellectual property (IP) and competitive advantage. This is because there are less experienced geologists at exploration and mine sites, there are fewer head-office technical service teams to support mine sites, exploration teams are smaller with less specialists employed, and there is an ever-greater dependence on contract and consulting services.This paper reviews and explores these issues with an industry-wide geological context, then provides a case study of how Newcrest Mining Limited (Newcrest) has dealt with these issues in exploration. Newcrest has grown from a one-mine company with an Australian exploration focus, to a large global company with multiple operations and an extensive international exploration portfolio. Laboratory flotation tests on fresh cyclone overflow samples are a useful tool to troubleshoot and indeed to improve plant performance; however, reproducibility between laboratory flotation test and plant performance is important for interpretation of the laboratory tests and hence their usefulness. Chemical reproducibility can be achieved with the addition of the required reagents; however, reproducing the physics of forces and energy in a 5 L cell compared to a 50 000 L plant cell or a 500 000 L plant cell is not generally studied or discussed. For some tests such as collector evaluation the physics of the flotation process may not be critical, but for some evaluations in the laboratory, it can be important.All flotation plants suffer from losses of valuable <20 µm mineral. Selective mineral aggregation has long been recommended to improve the poor flotation recovery of <20 µm sulfide minerals; however, successfully testing any type of selective sulfide mineral aggregation’s effect on flotation recovery in the laboratory on practical plant samples requires reproducing plant cell physics. The energy input per litre and the forces in a laboratory cell are vastly different to a plant cell. Reproducibility between laboratory and plant tests requires that these differences be minimised. The Republic of Uganda aims to exploit its’ significant, un-developed iron ore resources to supply the required raw material for developing its’ iron and steel industry across all the stages of the supply chain. Large prospects of iron ore exists in Uganda in the eastern (Tororo) regions and southwestern (Kisoro-Kabale) regions of the country. The Kisoro-Kabale iron ore projects covers mineralisation in hematitic banded iron formation (itabirite) in the north-eastern Congo-Tanzania Craton; covering ten Iron ore prospects. The prospects include Kamena, Karukara, Nyamiringa, Kyanyamuzinda, Rugando, Katagata, Rwengongo, Kijuguta, Kihumuro and Katuna. High-grade hematite ore prospects in south-western Uganda have known grades ranging from 55 per cent to 68 per cent iron ore content with an exploration target estimated at over 500 million tonne (Mt). Small scale production of iron ore from the south-western regions provide raw material to existing steelmaking and direct reduction iron ore plants located in the Jinja and Iganga districts of eastern Uganda. Large quantities of iron ore and other steelmaking raw material, however, are required to be imported into Uganda due to the limited exploration and development of their own iron ore mining operations. A joint collaboration between the European Union (EU), the Department of the Geological Survey and Mines (DGSM), Ugandan Ministry of Mines in partnership with Australian drilling and mining consultancies, ADT Africa and Kalem Group as a EU funded project was undertaken during November 2022 and September 2023. Exploration and evaluation of the ten iron ore prospects in south-western Uganda was undertaken through geological mapping, drilling, assaying, and technical studies with the view to attract investment for the development of Uganda iron ore mining and steelmaking industry. The collaboration developed mineral exploration policy, guidelines and standards, an iron ore exploration manual, a geological data management policy, and to support the sustainable development of iron ore mining in Uganda through building the capacity of local Ugandan geology and mining personnel through the transfer of knowledge and expertise from experienced iron ore experts. The quantification of these resources is an important first step in assessing their economic potential and attracting mining investors. This paper presents an overview of the investigation program and the preliminary results as an important first step in attracting mining investors to this exciting new iron ore province.

In an environment of decreasing ore grade, increasing costs and uncertainty with respect to commodity prices, the industry could benefit from evaluating alternative technologies and innovative circuit configurations. The flexible circuit approach suggests that the design of grinding circuits can be adapted to changes in feed properties and economic conditions. Advances in modelling and simulation are enabling metallurgists to predict the performance of more complex circuit configurations with increased confidence. Ore variability information and processing costs may be used as modelling inputs to determine the optimum processing conditions at a given time. A case study has been completed demonstrating the value of combining a flexible circuit with a model-based optimisation of the process. Ore properties and equipment performance data obtained in operating plants have been used to model and simulate flexible circuit configurations.This paper explores strategies to introduce flexibility to existing circuit configurations when processing ores with high variability. Multicomponent models incorporated in the model developers’ kit (MDK) allow the simulation of more complex and flexible circuits. This capability enables demonstration of the potential to enhance metal production through adapting processing routes according to the ore type being processed. The simulation of different flow sheet configurations allowed the definition of the best option for maintaining the metal production when treating lower grade ores, highlighting the advantages of flexible circuit configurations compared with a one-process-fits-all approach.CITATION:Foggiatto, B, Hilden, M M and Powell, M S, 2014. The Lane Cove Tunnel (LCT) is an important infrastructure link in New South Wales (NSW) and runs from the end of the Gore Hill Freeway at Artarmon at its eastern extremity, to the end of the M2 at North Ryde at its western extremity.  The LCT is 3.6 km long and generally consists of twin two/three lane unidirectional tunnels running largely under Epping Road from just east of Mowbray Road, west to the western end of the Gore Hill Freeway. The tunnel opened in early 2007. The presentation will provide a summary of the traffic and emission modelling performed for selected representative surface road sections in the vicinity of the Lane Cove Tunnel. An assessment of the predicted impact of vehicle emissions on ambient air quality in the corridor as a result of changed traffic conditions due to the tunnel opening will be presented. The traffic modelling and emission calculations were undertaken for the following two scenarios: Year 2006 û Lane Cove Tunnel no-build option, and Year 2006 û Lane Cove Tunnel build option. Vehicle emission calculations for the four main pollutants from vehicles: CO, VOC, NOx and PM10 on the surface roads in the vicinity of the Lane Cove Tunnel were performed using the predicted daily traffic for the two cases (no-build and build). The analyses indicated that the vehicle emissions for all pollutants are expected to significantly reduce in the corridor with the building of the Lane Cove Tunnel, including the areas in the vicinity of all tunnel portals, when compared to vehicle emissions for the no-build case.  As a result of the decreased vehicle emissions on the surface roads, the study concluded that the actual ambient air quality is expected to improve in the corridor including the tunnel portal areas after the Lane Cove Tunnel opening.

Acidic reductive leaching is one of the best known and most widely employed chemical processes for beneficiating minerals of industrial interest. Conventional acidic leaching with sodium dithionite (Na2S2O4), employed to bleach industrial minerals used in the production of ceramics, glassware, paper etc, does not always allow products of high quality to be obtained. In the work reported here two reducing agents, ascorbic acid and oxalic acid, have been employed in a medium acidified by means of sulphuric acid. Continuous systematic tests have been performed on a kaolin sample containing 0.8 per cent Fe2O3, adopting various operating parameters such as, leaching time, temperature and reagent concentration. In each case the total quantity of bi- and trivalent iron dissolved was ascertained. Removal of 80 per cent and 100 per cent of iron with ascorbic and oxalic acid respectively was obtained, while less than one per cent of iron was dissolved in the presence of sulphuric acid only. Products having a very good degree of whiteness (92 - 94 per cent) were obtained, whereas with sodium dithionite the degree of whiteness was in the 85 to 88 per cent range. The best conditions identified were applied to a sample of quartz for the removal of ferric impurities.

During the design and operation stages of a block caving project, a large amount of research and development work has been undertaken in the Tongkuangyu Copper Mine. This paper presents the research achievements from these studies, including a rock mass quality evaluation method, cavability prediction, fragmentation evaluation, caving mechanisms, a computerised production scheduling model and the optimised draw control system. The main features of the block caving system in the Tongkuangyu Copper Mine are also discussed.

Northparkes Mines commenced production in 1994 and the mine has significant reserves to allow operation into the future. There are a number of potential future concentrator feed sources with variable sulfide mineralogy and grades.In February 2012 a comprehensive flotation survey was conducted to allow mass balancing and evaluate the operation of the flotation circuit. A rudimentary, copper element only, unsized flotation simulator was developed to evaluate high level potential for optimisation and improvement. In 2013 this flotation model was expanded to produce a mineral based, floatability component model to estimate the effect of future concentrator feed source on metallurgical performance. This revised model allows various circuit configurations to be simulated to provide a high level blueprint for the long-term planning to maximise performance.This paper provides a review of the process followed to develop the model, including an analysis into the mineral floatability component model and its calibration against plant operations. The in-pipe treatment of slurries with polymer addition shortly prior to deposition is a noteworthy emerging technology of increasing popularity. Although polymer treatment has been shown to substantially modify and improve depositional and dewatering behaviour in a significant number of cases, the impacts of polymer treatment on geotechnical performance of tailings are less well understood. For example, certain combinations of polymer and slurry type have been shown to result in lower final densities at a given vertical effective stress. Despite these lower densities, polymer-treated tailings often exhibit peak undrained shear strengths consistent with untreated material. However, the sensitivity and/or brittleness of the material may be negatively influenced by the looser state created. Although these changes have been studied, most testing available in the literature was undertaken on relatively ‘fresh’ samples of polymer-treated material. However, significant shear may occur following treatment and prior to the commencement of settling and self-weight consolidation as the material moves down the beach.To study the effects of shearing on the subsequent performance of polymer-treated tailings, a test program consisting of consolidation, triaxial and direct simple shear tests was undertaken on presheared polymer-treated material. Materials used were identical to those used in previously published studies on the impacts of polymer treatment in a ‘fresh’ condition. Shearing of the polymer-treated material generally appeared to lessen the impacts of the polymer treatment process. However, the behaviour of the material when sheared indicated that the polymer was still impacting the behaviour of the material in some respects. The results indicate the importance of the consideration of shearing on material behaviour when planning and designing a tailings deposit where polymer treatment is to be implemented.CITATION:Reid, D and Fourie, A, 2015. The flow of information, and consequently the decision-making along the chain of mining from exploration to beneficiation, typically occurs in a discontinuous fashion over long timespans. In addition, due to the uncertain nature of the knowledge about deposits and the inherent spatial distribution of material characteristics, actual production performance often deviates from expectations. Reconciliation exercises to adjust mineral resource and reserve models and planning assumptions are performed with timely lags of weeks, months or even years.The key concept of real-time mining promotes a change in paradigm from discontinuous intermittent process monitoring to a continuous process and quality management system in the resource extraction process. The framework includes a real-time feedback control loop that rapidly links online data acquired during extraction at the mining face, material handling and processing with a sequentially updatable resource model. This will allow near real-time optimisation of decisions related to long-term planning, short-term sequencing and production control.The proposed framework integrates the following building blocks in a holistic manner: automated sensor-based material characterisationonline machine performance measurementsunderground navigation and positioningunderground mining system simulation and optimisation of planning decisionsupdating techniques for resource/reserve models.This paper introduces the real-time mining concept and the building blocks and provides a review of the state-of-the-art. During the Palaeoproterozoic, a large number of granitic intrusions were emplaced in the various parts of the Pine Creek Geosyncline (PCG). In the central region, the granitic magmatism is represented either by the coalesced mass, eg the Cullen Batholith, or individual plutons such as the Mount Bundey Granite which together with the Mount Goyder Syenite intrude the metasedimentary strata, causing wide spread contact aureoles. Some of these granitic intrusions are temporally and genetically related to gold (and less commonly base-metals) mineralisation present in the adjacent metasediments. These plutons are characterised by the presence of biotite and homblende which appear late in the paragenetic sequence. Electron microprobe analyses of biotite and homblende show that these minerals are poorly to moderately zoned. Biotites are characterised by a decrease in Fe/(Fe + Mg) ratios when plotted against AIVI. Similarly a modest decrease in Ti from centre to the margins of the biotite crystals has also been observed. Furthermore, an increase in Mg/(Mg + EFe) ratios from centre to the margins as well as in mafic to felsic rocks is also apparent. On the other hand, homblendes from the granitic bodies display less well marked trends and are poorly zoned. However, they show systematic increases in Mg/(Mg + EFe) ratios, and decreases in Fe, Al"' and Fe/(Fe + Mg) ratios, when plotted against Si. Magnetic susceptibility measurements on powdered samples of the plutons give results characterised by high values ranging from 0.8 x 10-4 to 2.0 x 10-3 emu/g which place the granites in magnetite- series field. This indicates that the oxidation state of the magma was high during crystallisation. The range of chemical compositions of the mafic phases indicates a rise in the oxidation state of the magma as it progressively became saturated in H20-volatiles and other metals, not partitioned into the earlier crystallised phases in the final stages of magma consolidation. These variations in chemical compositions also indicate that initially fOz was high and became progressively higher during fractional crystallisation of magmas; this subsequently led to the emanation of hydrothermal fluids responsible for the mineralisation in the adjacent metasediments.
