Tensile tests were conducted on pure magnesium and on four commercial alloys over a variety of temperatures and strain rates. The high positive slope of the ductility vs testing temperature curves that is found over a short range of testing temperatures for these materaturerials was shown to result from the fact that the microstructure was not stable at these testing temperatures. Pure magnesium did not display a transition temperature, although its sub-room temperature ductility was low. This poor ductility resulted from a grain boundary weakness. The aluminum-bearing commercial magnesium alloys had a higher ductility than the pure magnesium. ness.Thealuminum-bearingcommercialThese alloys did exhibit a transition temperature and grain boundaries that were stronger than the grain material. Both pure magnesium and the commercial alloys began initiating cracks at strains equal to one half of their fracture strain. MAGNESIUM base alloys' enormous potential as structural materials lies in their high strength to weight ratios. At present, the high strength magnesium base alloys such as AZ-80, which will be discussed later, have about as high a tensile strength to specific gravity ratio as the highest strength wrought aluminum alloy, 75s-T6, and, of course, a much higher strength to weight ratio than structural steel. Further, since the magnesium base alloys develop their high strength to weight ratios with moderate strengths and extremely light weights, the ratio of load carrying capacity to the weight of many structures is relatively higher for the magnesium base alloys than their strength to weight ratios would indicate. This results because judicious increases in section size, such as increasing the depth of bending members or adding reinforcing ribs, can frequently increase the weight of a structure linearly while the strength and stiffness increase as the second or third power of the added weight. Strength and rigidity must be designed into lightweight structures by those techniques which establish multiaxial stress states. Consequently, strong, lightweight structures frequently also possess a greater propensity toward brittle failures. In order to insure against these catastrophic failures, an extra premium must be placed on ductility and toughness in light alloys. Current knowledge of the ductility and toughness behaviors—notched behaviors—of magnesium base alloys is limited.* Most of the magnesium base alloys * The state of present knowledge regarding the effect of testing temperature on mechanical properties has recently been summar-ized by Pritchard.' crystallize in the hexagonal system, so that they are expected to exhibit a tough and ductile to brittle transition temperature. Actually, a transition temperature behavior has been reported for commercially pure magnesium in the literature, but the characteristics of this transition temperatureh uggest that it may not be a transition in the usual meaning, but simply the onset of some thermal softening, a performance much like that which face-centered-cubic lead might exhibit slightly below room temperature. If transition temperatures do exist, such important questions as the manner in which they are affected by internal variables such as chemical composition and grain size, or the effect of external variables such as rate of straining or notch severity have never been investigated. The investigation reported upon herein was undertaken in order to define some of the mechanical behaviors of the magnesium base alloys better, to gain a better understanding of the influence of some of the above listed variables, and particularly to understand their effect on ductility and toughness better. The Full Scale Model Roof Bolt Test System described herein was designed, fabricated, erected, and installed by MSA Advanced Systems Division for the U. S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Mines, Spokane Research Center. It was furnished under USBM Contract No. 50271014 and Modifications. The test system is intended for use by the Bureau of Mines to run comparison tests on roof bolt systems. The mine entry cross section is made from special concrete pillars and roof slabs. They are constructed within a steel beam frame with hydraulic operated cylinders to apply loads that simulate the action of mining overburden. The frame is designed so it can be disassembled for replacing the concrete in subsequent tests. A computer and data acquisition system is furnished to control the load application and measure and gather data.

Research and development has been carried out on the patented Dynamic Rock Anchor, tradenamed DYNA-ROK and DYNA-ROK PLUS Anchors, which are manufactured and marketed by Ingersoll-Rand Company. This paper will present the results of field testing of this revolutionary new concept in ground control. Geologic conditions will be described where the plastic sleeve of the DYWA-ROK anchor alone is sufficient to provide anchorage and also, where in softer ground conditions, the DYWA-ROK PLUS is applied. The rationale for making the decision as to the type of fixture to be employed, the length of plastic tube to be used and the quantity of resin are explained. Pull test data will be shown from eight different coal seams in the Eastern United States where the product has been installed.

Several spatially and/or temporally distinct phases of epithermal activity can be recognised in the Horohoro-Matahana Basin area of the Taupo Volcanic Zone. In the northern Matahana Basin a 140 - 350 ka age range is proposed for mineralised debris flow clasts and related (?) epithermal  mineralisation intersected in a recent drillhole. To the east, a ca. 40 - 50 ka age range is suggested for epithermal activity in the Waikaukau alteration zone which was focused along the Guthrie Fault. Hydrothermal explosion breccias occur over 13 km within the Guthrie Graben, and are probably sourced from vents in the south. Assuming a common origin, these breccias are constrained to a 45 - 50 ka age range. Within the Horohoro hydrothermal system (around the present hot spring), older (15 - 50 ka) and younger (0 - 15 ka) features can be distinguished.

The value of nonfuel raw mineral production in the United States for 1977 increased over that of 1976 by 5%, from $16.7 billion to $17.5 billion. Metals declined by 5% from $6.1 billion to $5.8 billion, chiefly because of strikes in the iron ore industry and a depressed copper market. Subsidization of mining industries in some foreign countries accounted in part for the excess of copper and some other metals on world markets. Weak metal markets and continued slowdowns in the world economy were the main reasons of the virtual absence of new mine projects. Increasing domestic governmental involvement affecting mineral industry activities, such as pricing controls, public land withdrawals, and the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act, effective August 3, continued to be controversial and to be criticized by various segments of the industry.

This report presents the theory and design of a stiff loading machine used by the Bureau of Mines. The machine incorporates three high-strength steel columns as the restraining member in parallel with the specimen. The theory presented gives the basis of design and the dimensions of component parts of the machine. Laboratory verification of the theoretical stiffness is described using three different setups involving a hydraulic jack and spacers and confirms the stiffness calculations to within 1 percent. Experimental techniques, testing procedures, and special equipment designed for determining the complete stress-strain behavior of NX cores of both hard and soft rock are described. Typical test data are presented as force-displacement curves for two rock types, a marble and a granite.

This paper is one of a series on milling methods and costs being. published by the Bureau of Mines. The milling practices and special problems relating to grinding, tailings disposal, and choice of a treatment process at the Cardinal mill are discussed. The property of the Cardinal Gold Mining Co. is about 18 miles southwest of the town of Bishop, Inyo County, Calif., at an altitude of approximately 8,500 feet. The camp has been designated Bishop Creek by the postal authorities. The property comprises 33 mining claims, including fractions and millsite in sections 19, 20, 29, and 30, T. 8 S., R. 31 E. These claims are located in a general way along the strike of a band of quartzite.

Mineral resource management (MRM) practice has developed in South Africa over the course of the last ten years, with the purpose of integrating previously isolated technical functions into a value chain aligned, process organization, responsible for mine planning and optimization. The implementation of MRM within various companies has met with varying degrees of success, often resulting in incremental improvements in the planning process and, conversely, often becoming the scapegoat for poor delivery on plans and projects. The reason for this has been, amongst others, a lack of a suitable metric to define the success rate of MRM in the business at hand, in terms of its contribution to the bottom line. This paper is the result of extensive research by the author into this subject, which has resulted in the conclusion that economic value added is an appropriate measure that will lead to real optimization and value creation in mining companies, if applied within a new, holistic model

The NASA Lewis Research Center, under U.S. Bureau of Mines program direction, performed an assessment of alternative mobile power sources for mining applications. A wide variety of heat engines and energy systems was initially examined to ascertain which could be considered as potential alternatives to presently used power systems. The present mobile power systems are electrical trailing cable, electrical battery, and diesel - with diesel being largely limited in the United States to noncoal mines. Each candidate power source was evaluated in terms, of the following requirements: (1) Ability to achieve the duty cycle (2) Ability to meet Government regulations (MSHA certification) (3) Availability (production readiness) (4) Market availability (5) Packaging capability An initial screening reduced the list of candidates to the following: (1) Diesel (2) Stirling (3) Gas turbine (4) Rankine (steam) (5) Advanced electric (batteries) (6) Mechanical energy storage (flywheel) (7) Use of hydrogen evolved from metal hydrides This list of candidates was divided into two classes of alternative power sources for mining applications - heat engines and energy storage systems. A summary of each class follows.

A quick-reaction, mine permissible rescue vehicle (MERV) was developed for use by rescue teams. The MERV is a 6-wheeled, battery-powered unit with life support equipment and instrumentation; designed for a two-man team, with provisions for handling two victims or tools in a trailer. The vehicle is 100 inches long, 56 inches wide, and maximum height of 34 inches. It can be lowered down most mine shafts and has clearance to travel mine railways. The vehicle has power to all six wheels with power transmitted separately to either or both sets of wheels. Low-pressure, high-traction tires give the vehicle the ability to handle soft, muddy mine floors, flooded areas and significant obstacles, and can negotiate a 45% grade. Power and life support are sufficient for a 4-hour mission. The life support system is a commercially-available, approved unit currently used by MESA rescue personnel. A payout wire system provides communication between the vehicle and home base over a distance of 10,000 feet. On-board monitoring of carbon monoxide, methane and oxygen is provided, with master and individual alarms to warn of gas concentrations outside pre-set limits. A lightweight, water-tight trailer was developed for carrying victims or hauling tools and equipment.

Response surface methodology is a well-known and powerful technique for determining optimum conditions in flotation systems. One disadvantage is the onerous task of the numerical calculations and curve plotting. This paper describes a system in which the investigator simply selects the range of several flotation variables after which the design of the experiment, data analysis, generation of response surface equations, and response surface plots are automatically carried out using a digital computer and a computer-driven curve plotter. Several typical response surfaces of important variables in phosphate flotation are presented as examples.

This report was prepared as a background reference for future publica¬tions concerning the damping capacity of metals and alloys. It contains a broad description of the theory and methods of measuring damping capacity and correlates the developments of the past decade in terminology, units, and techniques. Damping-capacity instrumentation at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station, Rolla, Mo., is described. The bibliography contains over 150 references to recent articles, each tabulated as to material investigated and test variables, such as frequency, stress, mode of vibration, and temperature. INTRODUCTION After it discovered high-damping manganese-copper alloys before World War II, the Bureau of Mines began research on the damping capacity of alloys and has continued to expand this activity to the present time. In physical metallurgy, damping capacity has become an important research tool in the Bureau. The physical measurement of the damping properties of alloys was begun at the College Park laboratories, and later conducted at Salt Lake City under the direction of Dr. E. V. Potter. Among the many articles resulting from this work, Damping Capacity of Metals (108)3/ has received frequent men¬tion in more recent literature and describes briefly the methods of measurement employed at that time.

Pin Piles are small diameter, bored, cast-in-place piles used to underpin structures. They were first employed over 40 years ago in Italy, and have been used in the U.S. since the late 1970's. However, it is only in the last few years that their full potential in terms of load holding capacity has been exploited: whereas 100 kip working loads typified former practice, ultimate loads approaching 700 kips have recently been recorded for Pin Piles founded in sand. In order to better understand the actual performance of these piles, fundamental research has been conducted by a consortium of industry and academia. This paper describes the advances made in the laboratory and full scale field testing programs. In particular, the extensive field tests have been conducted in a variety of materials in which different pile configurations have been cyclically tested to failure. By using this test method, the elastic performance of the piles has been examined and so the progressive interfacial debonding phenomenon has been studied. This has led to the development of the Elastic Ratio concept which is proving extremely useful in analyzing and predicting Pin Pile performance. Data are provided from the full scale Test Pile Programs conducted at Mobile, AL and Port Vancouver, WA. Given that Pin Piles are usually installed in areas of low headroom or restricted access, and through difficult, occasionally contaminated soils, the paper also describes key aspects of construction.

"INTRODUCTION In a previous report3 prepared for the American Gas Association, the influence of washing coal on coke properties and on gas and by-product yields was discussed on the basis of answers to questionnaires sent to coke-oven superintendents and a review of the literature on the subject. This review indicated that the elimination of free impurities by cleaning coal improved coke quality by (a) reducing ash and sulphur, (b) decreasing clinker trouble in burning the coke, (c) diminishing cross fractures in the coke, resulting in greater resistance to breakage on handling, and less small coke and breeze, and (d) greater uniformity in chemical composition and physical properties of coke. Washing also reduced the sulphur in coke and gas and increased the yield of gas and by-products per ton of dry coal charged.This paper is supplementary to the previous report and presents some experimental data obtained with Pittsburgh bed coal from Pennsylvania and Mary Lee bed coal from Alabama.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSGrateful acknowledgment is made to F. No minerals have been produced from the McGraw Creek RARE II area. During the 1982 U.S. Bureau of Mines study, there were no active mines in the area. Limestone occurrences (fig. 1, no. 2), four copper prospects (fig. 1, no. 1, 4, 5, 6), and a prospect with no significant mineral values (fig. 1, no. 3) were examined. A moderate potential for high-calcium limestone resources was estimated between ocurrences within the study area near McGraw and Spring Creeks (fig. 1, no. 2). There is low potential for copper resources at the Argenta Prospect (fig. 1., no. 1) in the study area, and the McDougall Prospect adjacent to the area.

Geologic investigation of a mineralized zone in eastern Alabama indicates that large quantities of talc and soapstone are scattered over a wide area close to the surface. Laboratory experiments show that this material may be upgraded to a high-quality talc. A market survey indicates that the talc deposits may be of current and long-range interest. The anthophyllite asbestos which is associated with the talc does not appear to occur in sufficient quantities to be considered as a primary commercial source.

The Bismark Mine is located in northern Chihuahua, Mexico, 150 km (95 miles) southwest of Ciudad Juarez (Fig.1). The ore deposit was discovered in 1979 and was placed in production in 1992. The production rate is about 2.4 kt/d (2650 stpd) from an ore reserve of 8.5 Mt (9.3 million st). Grades currently average about 8% zinc, 0.5% lead, 0.2% copper and 50 g/t (1.46 oz/st) silver. Substantial inflows of water into the underground mine complicate the operation. Complex metallurgy poses another challenge for the operators. Bismark is a joint venture with 90% participation by Minas Penoles, SA de CR of Mexico City and 10% participation by Promociones Industriales Banamex, S A de C V (PIB S A) of Mexico City. Anew company, Minera Bismark, SA de CV was formed to operate the property. Cyprus Minerals was a 40% participant in the joint venture but, in early 1993, sold its share to Minas Penoles. The Bismark Mine is one of the largest new underground mining projects built in Mexico during the last 10 years. It is the country's fifth largest underground metal mine and provides about 1 % of the world's zinc supply at about 50 t/a (55,000 stpy). Bismark is a trackless operation with overall productivities of 7.6 t/manshift (8.4 st/manshift). The 2.4-kt/d (2650-stpd) concentrator started up in March 1992.

The small-scale surface mining operation in northern regions is typically located in a remote, ungaged basin. With the recent increase in the economic potential of mining, the number of small operations is increasing. The year-to-year variability in precipitation in this region under study is of great concern to mine operators. Some years may yield only 5 to 6 inches of precipitation, while others may yield in excess of 15 inches. Such variability makes placer mining operations difficult to plan, since low water years may result in too little run-off for gravel washing and high water years may result in flooding of mining developments. There are no official streamfloaw records in many watersheds in the northern region containing placer mining claims. However, information from other streams permits calculation of an estimated discharge for a watershed under consideration using average flows per square mile of drainage. It is to be emphasized that these are average or expected figures in reality, one water year may be significantly wetter or drier than another. This high variability of annual precipitation is significant in relation to placer operations because of the large quantities of water required for this type of mining. Some operations can not operate in low water years. In the larger watersheds, operations may continue in low water years but at a slower pace because of longer water collecting times. The high variability of available run-off rakes placer mining in many parts of Alaska difficult to plan on a long range because of the unpredictability of water supplies.

"It is extremely difficult for a mine's central control room operator to control peakpower demands and to maintain normal materials handling operations at the same time. An investigation of the Falconbridge Strathcona Mine 's central control room has revealed that there are more than eight thousand possible combinations of ""situations"" that can arise. For such a circumstance, an expert system can become a very valuable tool to assist the operator in taking the most appropriate and timely action.A forward chaining expert system module has been developed for this application. The module is based on Level 5 ObjectTM software. It is graphics oriented and user-friendly. Training requirement is minimal.ForewordThis paper has arisen out of work carried out by YLS Associates and Falconbridge Limited as part of a contract between Falconbridge and the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, Government of Canada, on the application of expert systems in mining operations.IntroductionThe electrical bill charged to large consumers by Ontario Hydro is based upon two elements: demand and energy consumption. The demand is the peak kilowatt level that the consumer has required during a monthly period. It is not uncommon for the demand portion to be as much as one third of the monthly bill. Energy consumption is the total kilowatt-hour s (kWh) consumed during the period.Ways to reduce the energy consumption part of the electrical bill involve utilizing energy-efficient equipment and operating machines in off-peak hours when a lower energy rate is charged. Maintaining the peak power below a critical level may require that simultaneous usage of major pieces of equipment be avoided. A 3000 kW skip run at an inopportune time could cost a company an extra $30,000 in that month's power cost.Potential disadvantages associated with peak power control are lost production due to work stoppage and increased operating costs due to the need to employ extra personnel. Most companies find these matters relatively easy to deal with and with incentives provided by Ontario Hydro, actively pursue this facet of energy savings (Harju , 1991)."
