"In this research, image analysis technique, Kuz-Ram and KCO Models were used to examineefficiency of the quarry blasts. Investigations were performed in Cendere region, Istanbul. As a firststep, image analysis software was used to determine particle size distribution of muckpiles.Additionally, the results of KuzRam and KCO fragmentation models were compared to the results ofthe image analysis technique. The efficiency of KuzRam and KCO models was investigated and theimportant points to be considered were explained. Additionally, the effect of the rock factor valueson the size distribution curves was investigated. The blasthole diameter is 89 mm. (3.5 in) in thestudied quarry. Each measured blast has a different burden, spacing and stemming length. Blastholes was drilled in a staggered pattern. It is concluded that, KuzRam and KCO models can be successfully used to determine fragment size distribution in Cendere Region Quarries, Istanbul. Site engineers can predict blast fragmentation using the theoretical fragmentation models and they may change blast design parameters before blasting operation if necessary. It is possible to calibrate the Kuz-Ram and KCO fragmentation models using the measurements obtained by image analysis technique."

"The metallurgical performance of the column flotation process is determined by the concentrate grade and recovery. Although the former can be continuously measured using an on-stream analyzer, the latter must be estimated by a material balance calculation based on seldom verified steady-state assumptions. Consequently, the automatic control and optimization of flotation columns should be performed using secondary variables having a strong influence on the metallurgical performance, such as froth depth, gas hold-up or bubble surface area flux and bias. The aim of this paper is to present a model-based automatic control strategy using froth depth and bias measurements obtained from virtual sensors developed at Laval University. Preliminary pilot plant results on two-phase (water– air) and three-phase system (water – minerals – air) will be presented and eventual industrial implementation of such a strategy as well as the possibility of achieving effective real-time optimization from bias and froth depth measurements will also be discussed.INTRODUCTIONFlotation columns have been widely studied and used in mineral processing for about twenty years. Although a great deal of work has been accomplished to understand the influence of different variables such as froth depth (H), bubble surface area flux (Sb) and bias (Jb) on the metallurgical performance, the measurement of some of these variables is still difficult to be performed – except at the laboratory level – because in most cases, no commercial device yet exists.As a result of this, it is almost impossible to achieve neither efficient control nor optimization of the process at the industrial level, even in open-loop operation. This paper aims at presenting a simple control strategy of froth depth and bias. Description of the sensors used to achieved measurements, preliminary pilot plant results for froth depth control, eventual industrial applications and possibilities for process optimization are also treated."

Various methods have been developed through US Bureau of Mines research to remove gas in advance of, during, and subsequent to mining. These include drilling horizontal or cross-measure boreholes from a mine opening, and vertical boreholes stimulated for drainage in advance of mining or for gob gas drainage. Techniques and equipment now exist that allow drilling a borehole at any angle to the vertical, and even along an arc. Stimulation treatments have also been developed that provide for increased gas production capability. This paper describes the long-term production history of five select gas drainage installations. The Bureau of Mines conducted or participated in four studies. The remaining study was conducted by the Equitable Gas Co. Principles of storage, release, and migration of coal bed gases The amount of gas contained within any given area of a coalbed depends on the coal's inherent storage capacity and the physical conditions of the coalbed. The gas storage capacity of coal is primarily a function of rank. As such, it cannot be affected by the presence of drainage holes (Kim, 1977). Certain physical conditions of the coalbed can, however, be changed that will affect the release and migration of gas. By pumping water out of the coalbed through the vertical boreholes, two important changes occur - pressure is reduced and water saturation is lowered. Reducing reservoir pressure releases gas as the coalbed adjusts and equilibrates gas to the change. Increasingly large amounts of gas are released for each incremental decrease in pressure. Lowering the water saturation level raises the permeability of the coalbed to gas and allows the gas to more readily migrate to the wellbore (Kisse and Edwards, 1975). For horizontal boreholes completed near mine openings, the coalbed has already undergone a pressure or water saturation reduction phase. This condition thus allows such boreholes to be highly productive with minimal water production. A series of five signature holes were blasted at the Highvale Mine and the resultant seismic data was analyzed to make recommendations on how best to address neighbour complaints regarding blast vibrations. From an analysis of peak vibration levels measured at the closest neighbour for blasting during 2016, it was determined that the blast vibration intensity varied between 1.4 to 4.3 mm/sec (0.06-0.17 ins./sec.), well below the level of concern for the onset of minor damage to residential structures, however, the frequency of the blast vibrations was between 2.2 and 9.7 Hz, which is within the range of the natural resonant frequency for a single story home. This was determined to be the cause of the neighbour complaints, as the home would be responding to the blast vibrations.

"In gold processing plants, it is common to start gold cyanidation in the grinding circuit by simple cyanide addition or as a result of recycling residual cyanide. In such cases, advantages such as a decrease in gold lockup and reduced leach time have been noticed. The prevailing conditions in grinding circuits such as intense mixing, particle breakage and friction or high temperature are quite different from those found in tanks and so is the resulting cyanidation behaviour. To gain a better understanding of the cyanidation behaviour in mills and of the pertinence of cyanide addition in grinding circuits, lab tests were conducted using an industrial ore from Canadian Malartic mine. In this study, the effects of different parameters on cyanidation in grinding circuits were examined; parameters such as such as temperature, dissolved oxygen, cyanide concentration and pH. The results showed that the kinetic benefits of high temperature in the mill can overcome the low dissolved oxygen concentration thus leading to an overall gold dissolution kinetics improvement for temperatures up to 50°C. However, gold leach in the studied grinding circuit at lab scale caused an increase in cyanide consumption with a higher generation of iron cyanide and SCN-. These results were confirmed by tests in the Canadian Malartic plant where the cyanide addition was moved from the SAG mill to the leaching tanks resulting in a 20% savings in cyanide consumption.IntroductionCyanidation in grinding circuits can benefit gold processing by decreasing gold lockup and by reducing leach time. However, other aspects regarding gold and cyanicide dissolution come into play in the conditions prevailing in grinding circuits. Indeed, high turbulence, high temperature, recycling load, friction and particle breakage make cyanidation behaviour in grinding circuits different from in-tank cyanidation (Marsden and House, 2006). In several cases, cyanide in grinding is limited to a very low level or completely avoided such as in circuits with gravimetric separation, for ores requiring oxidative pretreatment or for preg-robbing ores. In other cases, water management imposes a certain recycling of residual cyanide. This problem is generally addressed by a case-by-case approach. However, the chemistry of cyanidation in mill circuits is worth investigating in order to assess the advantages and disadvantages."

The north central and northeastern states supply over 50 pct of the chemical and metallurgical limestone produced annually in the United States, and Ontario is the leading source of this material in Canada. About three fourths of the chemical and metallurgical stone produced in this area comes from Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Ontario. The specifications, physical and especially chemical, for chemical and metallurgical stone depend upon the end use, but in general the tolerance for impurities is so low as to rule out most limestones and dolomites. Both high calcium limestone and dolomite are used in the metallurgical and chemical industries. The principal metallurgical use is as a flux in iron ore blast furnaces and open hearth steel furnaces. The major chemical uses are in lime burning and soda-ash manufacture. Other important uses include glass manufacture, in making calcium carbide, and in sugar factories. All deposits of high quality carbonate rock are definitely finite. Invariably and inevitably they diminish in either thickness or quality laterally so as to become unworkable as chemical and metallurgical stone. The size of these high quality lenses ranges from a few thousands of tons to hundreds of millions of tons. The best hunting for new supplies is in the geologic formations known to contain premium quality deposits. However, because of high transportation costs, carbonate rocks, to be workable, must be close to market, dollarwise. Definitions: Chemical stone is limestone or dolomite used as a raw material by the chemical industry. The major chemical uses are in lime burning and soda-ash manufacture. Other important uses include glass manufacture, making calcium carbide, and in sugar factories. The specifications for chemical stone depend entirely upon the end product. Some uses require dolomite, some require high calcium limestone; in a few instances, notably in lime burning, either type of carbonate rock can be used as raw material. As a general rule, a fairly pure stone is necessary and for certain particular uses the tolerance for some elements such as sulfur, iron, and phosphorus may be extremely small. Metallurgical stone is used as a flux in furnace operations, especially in the blast furnace where iron ore is converted into pig iron and in the open hearth furnace where pig iron is made into steel. Either limestone or dolomite can be used in the blast furnace, but only high calcium stone is charged in the open hearth (except for rice-size dolomite used as a refractory). There are no rigid chemical specifications for blast furnace stone, but low silica, alumina, sulfur, and phosphorus are desirable. For open hearth use, in addition to low magnesia, a very low sulfur content is also specified by many furnace operators. For furnace use, fluxstone also must be sufficiently shatter resistant that it will remain in lump form during transport and charging into the furnace. Commercial stone is the term applied in the trade for crushed stone used for roadstone and in concrete aggregate. Many of our best chemical and metallurgical limestones are too soft to qualify in the Los Angeles abrasion test for use as commercial stone. However, some limestones, and a higher proportion of dolomites, do qualify for commercial stone and so can be sold to either market. Place Value: Even the highest grade limestone is still a bulk commodity with a relatively low value per ton. As a matter of fact there is very little difference in the average price per ton between high grade chemical and metallurgical stone and crushed limestone used commercially. Most high quality stone is produced in large operations with consequent low cost per ton whereas most commercial stone is produced in relatively small local quarries. "IntroductionCemented backfill has been placed underground in slurry form in Inco Limited's Ontario Division mines since the early 196Os. The slurry was traditionally mixed on surface at between 65 and 70 wt% solids* and transported underground via gravity through a borehole-pipeline distribution system. This method of placement, while simple and dependable, has proven to be costly because of the large amounts of transport water involved.A significant quantity of the slimes buildup on mine levels is caused by the backfill water carrying cement and other fine material out of the stopes. The level cleanup and eventual pumping or hoisting of the slimes and water back to surface result in substantial indirect backfilling costs.The cement that remains in the stope is always overhydrated because of the high water cement ratios that exist. As a consequence, high concentrations of Portland cement must be added to the backfill to produce the fill strengths required for the different mining methods.Pouring backfill at these densities also demands extensive fill preparatory work in the stopes to withstand the hydraulic heads created by the slurried fill. This, along with the delays in pouring necessary to allow for water drainage, result in significant losses in productivity.These negative aspects of slurry placed fill has led Inco Limited to investigate several methods of transporting backfill underground via pipeline, at higher densities (i.e. 75 to 95 wt.% solids). Three separate transport methods are presently being experimented with by the Company's Mines Research Department. Each utilizes a different technique or form of flow transport, i.e. concrete pumping technology, high density slurry flow, and pneumatic conveying."

This summary of international mineral exploration activities for 2006 draws upon avail-able information from literature, industry and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. The summary provides data on exploration budgets by region and mineral commodity, identifies significant mineral discoveries and areas of mineral exploration, discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analysis of the mineral industry based upon these data. Two types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review. They include budgetary statistics provided by Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and information on regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2006 compiled by the USGS.

Extensive deposits of brown coal exist in the Gippsland Basin, primarily in the Latrobe Valley. The total quantities of economically winnable coal in this region of Victoria and in other smaller fields are large enough to adequately assure Victoria's future electricity needs and to also provide large quantities for alternative applications, including liquefaction. As a result of the recent conflict in the Middle East attention has again been focussed on the production of synthetic fuels from coal. There have been many investigations over the years into the production of oil from Victorian brown coal. The purpose of this paper is to summarise the scope, objectives and major findings of these studies, with the emphasis on the direct hydrogenation route for converting brown coal to oil. The principal alternative processes are carboniastion and hydrotreatment of the product tar, or gasification and Fischer Tropsch synthesis of liquids from the product gas. The attractions of Victorian brown coal which have encouraged these studies include: ò the vast reserves of Victorian brown coal and the favourable conditions for low cost mining, ò the high quality of the coal (low ash, sulphur and nitrogen contents), ò the high reactivity of the coal giving high yields of product in hydrogenation to liquid fuels, ò the extensive data base available on the resource and its characteristics, and ò the availability of a skilled workforce and extensive infrastructure in the Latrobe Region to support a major resource development project. These advantages have been partially offset by: ò the high moisture content of the brown coal and the cost of drying, and ò the priority previously given to electricity generation in the allocation of the brown coal resource.

Iodine is a bluish-black, crystalline solid with sub-metallic luster, and has a specific gravity of 4.93. It volatilizes (sublimates) at ordinary temperatures into a blue-violet gas that has an irritating odor. Iodine is the least active of the halogens, all of which readily displace it. Only slightly soluble in water, iodine also dissolves in carbon disulfide, carbon tetrachloride and chloroform, giving a deep violet solution. The primary sources for iodine production are sub-surface brines associated with petroleum and natural gas deposits, and as a byproduct from nitrate deposits in Chilean desert caliche. The largest source of iodine is seawater which contains 0.05 ppm, or about 31 Mt (34 million st). Seaweed of the family Laminaria can extract and accumulate up to 0.45 percent iodine on a dry basis. Seaweed was an important source of iodine prior to 1959. However, it remains a significant source of iodine in the diets of many populations throughout the world.

A thermodynamic model has been developed to model the desilverising process of lead by the addition of zinc during lead refining, whereby silver-zinc solid solutions are formed, and floats out of the dissolved zinc/silver in the lead bath. The solubility of silver-zinc solid solutions in lead decreases with falling temperature. A number of variations and modifications of the desilverising process are modeled, and applied to a wide range of silver contents in lead bullions in the industry.

Yallourn brown coal and its characteristics have been the subject of innumerable papers and discussions. The Lurgi process adopted for the production of Towns gas by the gasification of brown coal has been described frequently in literature.The application of the Lurgi process for the gasification of Yallourn briquettes has naturally lead to some unexpected problems. Rather than attempt to review the whole field of experience gained in the first two years of operation of the gasification plant at Morwell, this paper attempts to describe two problems encountered, peculiar to the fuel used, and the steps taken in overcoming them.THE PROCESS AND PLANTTo clarify the conditions surrounding the problems, it is necessary to briefly describe the gasification and cooling processes and plant.Brown coal briquettes are gasified in a pressure generator, using a mixture of steam and oxygen as a gasifying medium. Crude gas produced in the generator is washed and cooled in the waste heat boiler and coolers. Figure 1 shows an arrangement of the generator and coolers. The gasifying medium enters the generator through a hollow shaft in the base. Bauxite residue (red mud) is an alkaline waste derived from the industrial process for extraction of alumina from bauxite ore. Some bauxite residues contain considerable concentrations of critical metals, for example, rare earth elements. Lithium in red mud was also reported as a potential resource. In the current study, a Li-rich red mud was leached using acetic acid to investigate the leaching behavior of lithium followed by neutralizing with hydrochloric or oxalic acid. By neutralizing red mud using diluted hydrochloric acid (0.01 mol/L), 58.04–60.27% of lithium was leached using 25% acetic acid at 95 °C for 60 min. In the meantime, more than 95% of sodium and 85% of calcium were also dissolved in the leachate solution. While oxalic acid (0.5 mol/L) was used to neutralize red mud prior to acetic acid leaching, lithium performed lower leaching efficiencies (42.41–46.88%) in comparison of using of hydrochloric acid–neutralized red mud. Nevertheless, these leaching efficiencies of lithium were close to that of calcium and much higher than those of sodium under the condition. In this study, 25% (v/v) of acetic acid, at 85 °C for 60 min, was demonstrated as optimum conditions for lithium extraction from oxalic acid–neutralized red mud using acetic acid. The results would be useful and of interest for lithium recovery and purification from red mud.

Researchers at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) work to reduce respirable dust exposures in mining operations. One focus of this research is silica dust control for surface and underground operations in the metal/nonmetal mining industry. PRL researchers analyze dust sampling results from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to identify high-risk occupations to guide research efforts. Research is then conducted in an effort to improve existing technologies and/or develop new controls for reducing worker exposure to airborne silica dust. During the last few years, PRL researchers have conducted research related to the following goals: improving protection provided by enclosed cabs on mobile surface mining equipment, reducing dust generation from surface drills, reducing dust levels in iron ore operations, and developing a new method to clean dust from workers? soiled clothes. A description of each of these controls and subsequent dust reductions quantified through site surveys will be provided.

"Concepts of linear elastic fracture mechanics were applied to study two cases of failure, namely an equalizing beam from a tandem rear axle of a highway tractor unit and the main beam of a flat bed trailer. In the first case, the presence of a crack, initiated by stress corrosion cracking followed by significant fatigue crack propagation produced a state of stress which was sufficient to produce brittle failure. Calculation of the fatigue life agreed with the number of cycles that the structure experienced before final fracture. In the second case, it was demonstrated that a combination of low temperature and high loading rate was sufficient to cause brittle fracture.IntroductionFailure analysis of engineering components has generally been carried out without the benefit of fracture mechanics. It is generally understood that real structures inevitably contain internal or surface flaws which under an applied load, may propagate to fracture. Fracture mechanics relates the applied stresses to the crack size in specified geometries. Since its introduction approximately thirty years ago, fracture mechanics has evolved as a design philosophy which can be used to develop fracture-safe designs. It can be also applied in analysis of failures, to ascertain if sound design and fabrication methods have been used."

Keywords: MgO-MgR2O3 refractory, SO2-containing gases, chemical attack The reaction mechanisms occurring when MgO-MgR2O3 refractories are exposed to SO2-containing gas atmospheres were examined. The study examined the characteristic structures of magnesite-chrome, chrome-magnesite and magnesite refractories exposed to SO2-O2 gas mixture at temperatures of 700°C to 1350°C. The phase characterization was conducted with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The results show that the physical characteristics of the refractory matrix along the grain boundaries are important refractory features during chemical attack from SO2-containing gas. Upon heating in SO2-containing gas, the changes in phase-chemical compositions and accompanying grain growth causes loosening of the structure and the pore volume promotes gas diffusion. The chemical reactions that occur form stable sulfate compounds identified as MgSO4, CaSO4 and CaMg3(SO4)4, and lead to disintegration of various phase structures and consequently erosion of the refractory. In conclusion, the reaction mechanisms in MgO-MgR2O3 refractories exposed to SO2-containing gases progress through a combination of structural disintegration and chemical attack.

New detailed mapping, micropalaeont- ology and isotopic dating have been successful in revising the stratigraphy of Woodlark Island. All Middle to Late Miocene intrusives and volcanic rocks have been assigned to the Okiduse Volcanics. In addition, the results demonstrate that the Tabukui beds and Wonai Hill beds (N9, late Early Miocene to earliest Middle Miocene) are a single unit. Similarly, the Nasai and Suloga Limestones are confirmed as a single stratigraphic unit as they yield similar foraminiferal ages (upper Te, Early Miocene), and both occur in the same stratigraphic position unconformably overlying basement Loluai Volcanics. Radiocarbon dating suggests a latest Pleistocene age for the upper Kiriwina Formation. Extensive Quaternary cover and low relief prevents detailed structural airphoto interpretation. In general, the structure is simple with all units on Woodlark dipping to the northwest a_4 exhibiting prominent local block faulting.

This paper presents a study conducted to assess sillmat behaviour during undercut mining and to provide a comprehensive understanding of the effects of arching and sillmat thickness on stability. The design study investigated the effects of such parameters as stope width and height, closure strains, orebody geometry and inclination, wall roughness, fill properties and cure time on the stability of cemented sillmat during undercut mining. Arching effects have been quantified based on centrifuge modeling studies for the different mining conditions. Observations have indicated that the degree of arching is a function of stope geometry, wall roughness, fill cohesion, and wall closure. Arching effects increased with decreasing stope width, increasing backfill cohesion and frictional resistance, increasing wall roughness and with wall closure.
