"A traditional linkage has long been established at Laval University's Department of Mining & Metallurgy between the Mineral Process (MP) and the Mining Exploitation (Min) on one hand, and between the Extractive Metallurgy (EM) and the Materials Engineering (Mat) on the other. This academic separation of Mineral Processing from Extractive Metallurgy at the educational level has become increasingly at odds with today's industrial practice in which both disciplines are not only complementary but also often intertwined. For instance, in gold ore processing, comminution, flotation, and gravity separation units are interfaced with atmospheric or pressure leaching modules and with carbon adsorption and electrowinning units. The new copper plants in South America combine comminution and flotation circuits with heap leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning processes.In order to reflect this new industrial reality and to harmonise the options offered in both its engineering programs, the Department of Mining and Metallurgy of Laval University has introduced major changes in its curriculum in 1996. These changes reflect also the recognition that the somewhat secondary status given so far to Mineral Processing and to Extractive Metallurgy within their ""mother"" programs, Mining/Mineral Engineering and Materials metallurgical Engineering respectively, was in sharp contrast with their actual significance for the Canadian economy. Leading industrial voices have raised similar concerns and the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board has also addressed this problem in its latest program evaluation.The changes implemented at Laval aimed at a) better representing MP and EM within the two undergraduate programs; b) training top-level versatile and multidisciplinary engineers, fluent in all aspects of MP and EM, irrespectively of which of the two ((mother)) programs they had chosen and capable of meeting today's industrial requirements; c) training students in process analysis, optimisation and automatic control using state-of-the-art software, and d) taking into account the co-operative nature of both undergraduate programs.Results are very encouraging in terms of student enrolment and industrial response. However, some concern is expressed on the sustainability of the renewed curriculum considering the drastic budget restrictions in effect at Laval as in most other Canadian universities."

Data are presented on the effect of iron oxide on the electrical conductivity of CaO-SiO2-FeO-Fe2O3melts, and on limiting current and impedance in direct current or alternating current charge transfer at iron electrodes. The strong influence of iron oxide content can be utilized for in situ determination of total iron oxide content and Fe3+/Fe2+ratio. The possible probe designs are presented and the principles and procedures of the measurements are explained. While the United States and the rest of the world struggles with record-setting oil prices Canadian oil sands producers are ramping up production to meet demand for oil while also fighting against a host of negative images. In recent months, the price of oil has skyrocketed. Most of that oil comes from Saudi Arabia. In Alberta, Canada there are unconventional oil reserves that rival those in Saudi Arabia in the vast Canadian oil sands, sometimes called the tar sands. Proponents of the oil sands say that Alberta?s oil sands can be a secure source of oil and energy for the United States for many years to come. With new mining and drilling projects, the industry has said that it could quadruple its production to nearly 4 million bbl/day by 2020. Time magazine once called the oil sands, ?Canada?s greatest buried treasure that could satisfy the world?s demand for petroleum for the next century.? So why hasn?t the United States embraced this close, politically secure source of energy? Because, getting usable fuel from the oil sands can be a dirty business, say opponents. The oil sands are a combination of clay, sand, water and bitumen. It is a heavy, black, thick oil. Oil sands can be mined and processed to extract the oil-rich bitumen, which is then refined into oil. The bitumen cannot be pumped from the ground in its natural state. Instead, tar sand deposits are mined, usually using strip mining or openpit techniques, or the oil is extracted by underground heating with additional upgrading. These methods require a huge amount of energy and water and produce a large amount of carbon emissions. Environmental groups that have long spoken out against the oil sands projects got some political backing in the United States in June when a group of mayors from large U.S. cities spoke out against the oil sands, as did presumptive Democratic candidate for U.S. president Barack Obama?s senior energy advisor. During a convention of large-city mayors in Miami, FL, Alberta?s oil sands were singled out in a nonbinding resolution calling for national guidelines to track the lifecycle impact of different types of fossil fuels. The resolution urges cities not to use unconventional sources of energy with a large carbon footprint, such as liquid coal and oil shale and oil sands.

For the purpose of comparing the amounts of dust produced by various mining operations, samples of atmospheric dust were collected during a complete cycle of drilling, blasting and mucking at or near the face of the Bureau's Mount Weather testing adit while the efficiency of several types of stemming in metal-mine blasting was being investigated. Understanding the effects of the bench on ground motion can improve the design of cast blasts and achieve improved blast efficiency while remaining below vibration requirements. A new dataset recorded in September 2003 from a coal mine in Arizona has allowed us to examine the excitation of short-period Rayleigh-type surface waves from four simultaneously-detonated explosions in and below a topographic bench of a mine. The explosions were recorded on a network of over 150 seismic sensors, providing an extensive understanding of the ground motion radiation patterns from these explosions. We detonated two separate explosions (~3 tons and ~1.5 tons ANFO) in the deepest pit of the mine, thus the explosions were shot to solid rock. Within 25 meters of these two explosions, we detonated two additional explosions of similar explosive yields in a bench, thus these explosions were shot to the free face. Radiation patterns and spectral ratios from the explosions show increased amplitudes (by a factor of 1.5 to 2) at azimuths behind the bench relative to the amplitudes in front of the bench. We compared these findings to seismic observations from two ~1.5 million pound cast blasts at the same mine and found similar radiation patterns. Modeling of these blasts shows that the variations in ground motion are caused by the topographic bench as a result of 1) horizontal spalling of the rock falling into the pit and 2) non- linear scattering near the free- face. We also note that shooting to a buffer (previously blasted rock) causes the azimuthal variations to be significantly reduced.

India bestowed with 6000km of the coastal belt, contains some of the richest and largest placer deposits with a mixture of heavy minerals like ilmenite, rutile, leucoxene, zircon, monazite, sillimanite and garnet. Each of the minerals is having economic value due to its inherent characteristics for industrial use in fields of paints, metallurgy, refractory, abrasive and so on. The reserves of titanium bearing minerals (ilmenite, leucoxene, and rutile) in the country is around 378 million tonnes. More than 90% of the titanium based minerals produced worldwide are utilised for making value added products in the pigment industries. Approximately 8 million tonnes of monazite reserves are available in the country from which several rare earth elements like cerium, neodymium, lanthanum, yttrium etc. can be extracted for use in several industries. The country contains a deposit of about 20 million tonnes of zircon, which is used in foundries, refractories, ceramics and chemicals. India has a reserve of 107 million tonnes of garnet and 131 million tonnes of sillimanite required for the abrasive and refractory industries respectively. Keeping in view the multifarious uses, the beach sand minerals are being exploited to have the economic growth of the nation. Although the process adopted for the separations are simple, the equipment involved are specially designed because of the nature of the material of construction. Starting from the spirals to magnetic separators, all equipments are manufactured outside India, which is not only costly, but the availability also takes much time for fulfilling the import formalities. Unlike open cast mining, beach sand mining is a environment friendly mining because dredging is implemented to cut and pump the loose sand through a slurry pump causing less damage to the surface topography as both mining and backfilling takes place simultaneously. Therefore all out efforts are made to explore the beach sand placer deposits in an economic manner to emerge as a leader in the global mineral industries.

A computation model of soil-pile (wall) interaction under lateral loading is presented in this paper. The model has been applied to some engineering projects, and the comparison between computation result and measured result shows good agreement, so the model is proved to be correct and practical.

Interlocking H sections with deep webs and high section modulus are being used for cofferdams and shore enclosures where pressures are excessive. The H sections can be as much as a meter deep; they can be used as continuous interlocked wall. A steel saving alternate is spacing the H and driving deep for stability then filling between with shorter interlocking sheet piles. Templates provide for exact positioning.

In engineering design of operator?s compartments, in underground mining equipment, ergonomics principles are often neglected or not given the full recognition they deserve. This paper defines ergonomics, applies it to machinery in an underground mining environment and describes the ergonomics analysis undertaken during the design phase of an EJC extra-low-profile mining loader. Encompassing the design of the operator?s compartment of this new loader, this paper illustrates the importance of ergonomics principles within the collective design process, ensuring that it is fully integrated into the design approach. An ultimate aim of this study is to ensure that all future designs follow this route to guarantee not only the outcome of a highly efficient, cost-effective and productive machine but that it is also takes the human factor into account, not only in maintenance but also in operation. Maximizing comfort will have the ultimate outcome of actually increasing productivity.

"A flotation bank consists of a serial arrangement of cells. How to optimally operate a bank remains a challenge. This article reviews three strategies for optimizing bank performance: air profiling, mass-pull (froth velocity) profiling and Peak Air Recovery (PAR) profiling. These are all ways of manipulating the recovery profile down a bank, which may be the property being exploited. Mathematical analysis has shown that a flat cell-by-cell recovery profile maximizes the separation of two floatable minerals for a given target bank recovery when the relative floatability is constant down the bank. Available bank survey data is analyzed in respect to recovery profiling. Possible variations on recovery profile to minimize entrainment are discussed.INTRODUCTION Flotation is used to separate valuable minerals from each other and from gangue. To reach a target metallurgical performance, usually assessed in terms of concentrate grade and recovery, feed is passed through stages such as roughing, cleaning and scavenging. All these stages comprise serial arrangements of flotation cells known as banks, lines or rows. Although a bank is the simplest interconnection of cells in a circuit, i.e. the tails of one cell is the feed to the next cell down the bank, how to operate each flotation cell in a way that the whole bank performance is optimized remains a challenge. Significant efforts have been made towards understanding the effect of operating variables on the flotation performance of an isolated cell (Lynch et al., 1981; Finch and Dobby, 1990; Gorain et al., 1998). However in the case of banks the variables that can be manipulated increase with the number of cells in the bank and the problem of how to manipulate them to achieve optimum performance is difficult even disregarding variation in ore characteristics (Lynch et al., 1981, p. 16). In general, the more manipulated variables available the better for optimization purposes, however without clear guidance how to effectively use them it becomes an “embarrassment of riches”."

"A. larger enrollment and a greater number of man-hours of employment by the enrolled companies were the outstanding features of the National Safety Competition of 1942, an annual safety contest conducted by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, for the promotion of safety among workers in the mines and quarries of the United States. The accident-frequency and accident-severity rates were somewhat higher than in 1941, but the frequency of accidents in relation to the number of man-hours worked was strikingly lower than in the earlier years of the 18-year period during which the contests have been conducted.Companies that enroll in the National Safety Competition compete for a bronze trophy known as the ""Sentinels of Safety."" Six of these trophies are provided by THE EXPLOSIVES ENGINEER annually for award by the Bureau of Mines. The trophies for 1942 wore won by an anthracite mine in Pennsylvania, a lignite mine in North Dakota, an underground metal mine in Tennessee, a limestone mine in Ohio, an open-cut metal mine in Minnesota, and a lime-:tone quarry in Pennsylvania. The trophies are presented to the companies for 1 year and are then transferred to the winners of the succeeding year's contest.The contest rules state that a mine or quarry must have at least 25 men employed underground or in the pit for at least 100 days, and the plant must be in operation 30,000 or more man-hours to be eligible for a trophy. The rank of mines and quarries is determined by accident-severity rates, or, in the case of accident-free records, by the number of man-hours worked."

Early identification of adverse geologic conditions and high stress concentrations during the high-speed extraction of coal using modern mechanized longwall systems is a major challenge facing the mining industry. Often, unexpected geologic anomalies that affect rock mass quality are encountered more rapidly, leaving the mine operator with insufficient time or information to deal with the changing ground conditions. The RockVision3D™ seismic tomographic system, developed by NSA Engineering, Inc., offers substantial benefits over conventional geologic/stress-detection methods and has been used successfully in coal mines worldwide. Tomographic images, produced economically and in near-real time, are easy to interpret, allowing mine operators to deal with potential hazards on a day-to-day basis.

The ability to efficiently process lowgrade ores has allowed the Gold Fields Mesquite Mine in Imperial County, CA to expand from a 2.1 Mt/a (2.3 million stpy) rate in 1986 to its present 7.3 Mt/ a (8 million stpy) processing rate. Increased tonnage demands led to the 1989 construction and startup of a dump leach pad to supplement the existing heap leach operation. This resulted in an excellent opportunity to compare the two processes at the same operation. Additional operating costs associated with the crushed ore heaps are justified through enhanced recoveries, even at very low ore grades. Gold Fields' Mesquite Mine is a gold heap leach facility located about 55 km (35 miles) east of Brawley in southeastern California. Five open-pit mines will be developed over the projected life of the property, covering a total area extending to a maximum of 5.5 km (3.4 miles) to the east and west, and 2.4 kin (1.5 miles) to the north and south. Mesquite will process 7.3 Mt (8 million st) of ore and produce more than 6.2 t (200 000 oz) of gold in 1990.

Large mining companies generally follow the distributed ownership corporate model, with a board of directors responsible for decisions that affect both shareholder value and stakeholders of the company. The board is simultaneously responsible for setting the culture and values of the corporation, which drive performance and priorities. Companies listed on the Johannesburg Securities Exchange (JSE) commit to sustainable development in various ways, either by virtue of implementing the King Code of Governance 2009 (King III) and/or through their own public reporting on social and environmental matters. Many mining companies make public statements regarding their support for environmental stewardship, ethical behaviour, and fair treatment of communities. It is a local, regional, and indeed, global phenomenon that companies fail to deliver on these statements. Research was carried out through the Institute of Directors of Southern Africa in 2007, and followed up in 2012, regarding directors? understanding of sustainable development issues, the relative priorities, what is needed for ?radical change? to effect sustainable development, and what enables or constrains the latter. Pertinent findings of both surveys are presented in this paper, and it is suggested that ?on-the-ground? performance may be indicative of the nature of leadership and decisions in the topmost ranks of the company. The results indicated that environmental concerns fall consistently below social issues. Financial capital ranked most important, and while environmental issues are recognized as being of strategic concern for the long-term, they ranked as being the lowest importance of all ?Five Capitals? (Financial, Manufactured, Social, Human, and Natural). Social capital ranked second lowest, with black economic empowerment being the only high-priority social issue. There is also evidence that certain companies within the mining sector fail to recognize their absolute dependence on natural resources. Much is made in academic and popular literature of the need for a new type of leadership for the radical shift to sustainable development: at company level this implies therefore a new type of director. The research found that only 14 per cent of directors felt that board decisions are consistent with their personal values; while intentions are strong to behave ethically and serve sustainable development, actions to give effect to these intentions lag significantly. Respondents indicated that the top impediments to courageous leadership for sustainable development related to personal issues of maintaining the image of being a director, fear of appearing weak, fear of being a lone voice, and bowing to board-colleague peer pressure.

Relatively few longwall mines in the U.S. operate under multiple seam conditions where the two seams are less than 200 ft apart. This paper describes the experience of six that do. These operations are located in PA, WV and UT, and include examples of both undermining and overmining. Some operate above or beneath their own workings, others are in historic mining districts and must contend with abandoned mines that are decades old. The lessons that these mines have learned cover a broad range of topics, including: • Whether to stack gateroads or place them under old gob areas; • How to size pillars and select artificial support to cross longwall stop lines; • How to use yield pillars to minimize multiple seam stresses and coal bump potential, and; • When to anticipate the creation of pathways for gas, water, or oxygen between current and abandoned gobs.

Underground mining accidents in the USA in recent times have prompted the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to review emergency and tracking systems for underground mines. Several communication and tracking systems are available on the market and various systems have been installed in mines around the world. In addition, MSHA?s standard on Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) requires mines to comply with the final PEL of 160µg/m3 by May 20, 2008. Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc., Underground Division, has been in operation since 1995 and an extensive control and monitoring network, and a leaky feeder voice network is in place. Enhancements to the communication and control system are currently being implemented to include a PED emergency notification system, wireless LAN with tracking of personnel and equipment in the mine, and a ventilation control system that will use the tracking information and ventilation data to automate much of the mine ventilation system. Expected benefits from such a system would be enhanced communication with miners, emergency notification, location of miners and equipment, energy savings, improved ventilation control, and improved atmospheric conditions in the mine including reduction of diesel particulate matter (DPM).

In Northland, New Zealand, localised large deposits of halloysite clay have been produced by in-situ alteration of rhyolite volcanics of Pliocene or Pleistocene age, which were erupted through pre-Pliocene sedimentary strata and locally through Pleistocene basalt; and which were subsequently onlapped by further basalt flows. Alteration to clay has been a result of both hydrothermal and of meteoric processes, and decreases in intensity of alteration with increasing depth. The raw material is crushed and fractionated to produce a product of less than two micron particle size, which is of exceptional whiteness and brightness. The unique properties of the clays render them highly desirable for specialised ceramic purposes.

The effect of grinding media performance on milling and operational behaviour was demonstrated under different selected conditions of calcium carbonate slurry milling. A variety of grinding media materials and bead sizes, along with two different stirrer tip speeds, were used in the grinding process to generate a particle size reduction of the calcium carbonate (CaCO3). To determine the optimum milling parameters the collected test data were used to calculate and evaluate specific energy as well as stress intensity under different milling conditions.
