For the past four years, the Department of Mining Engineering at the University of Kentucky has conducted a validation study of the CFD Fluent code, by comparing its results against mining-related benchmark experimental data provided by NIOSH?s Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. This particular study is dedicated to the effect of machine-mounted dust scrubbers on the performance of face ventilation systems using extended-cut mining with a blowing curtain.

The 20th annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards Banquet sponsored by the Mining Foundation of the Southwest will be held at the Westin La Paloma in Tucson, AZ, on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002. This year’s inductee, guest of honor and featured speaker is J. David Lowell, one of the preeminent exploration geologists of the past 30 years. Among his most recent discoveries is the world-class Pierina gold deposit in Peru, currently owned and operated by Barrick Gold. As representatives of mining heritage, the Hall of Fame will induct Howard Allen Twitty, Sr., and Bernhardt Rohe. Twitty was a respected public lands attorney. He made significant contributions to the mining industry by representing several major companies in many court cases. He was also the author of numerous papers on mining law. Rohe was managing director of Peñoles. In that position, he helped guide the Mexican mining company for its growth into the international mining company that it is today.

Tonight it is my privilege to present the 1976 Institute Medal to one of our members, Mr L. C. Brodie-Hall, C.M.G.Laurence Charles Brodie-Hall, as chief executive in Western Australia for Western Mining Corporation Limited (WMC) from 1958 to his retirement in 1975, had a profound influence on the company's growth and development which had a significant influence on the prosperity of the State of Western Australia and, in turn, Australia.Following the company's decision in 1952 to diversify from gold mining, he took a leading part in the exploration and development of the bauxite deposits in the Darling Ranges by a subsidiary company, Western Aluminium N.L., and the subsequent formation of Alcoa of Australia Limited, the development of the first long term export contract for iron ore from Western Australia, the development of the nickel deposits at Kambalda and the subsequent establishment of a nickel refinery and nickel smelter in Western Australia.

EARLY workers in the field have established that the diffusion of nitrogen follows normal diffusion laws. Concentration-penetration data from layer analyses of reasonably pure iron specimens nitrided in an atmosphere of CO-NH, are given in the literature,' and were utilized to calculate diffusion constants for nitrogen. The diffusion of nitrogen in y-iron may be represented approximately by the equation D - 1.07x10-' e-:".'m'"'r The diflusion coefficients, D, given by this relation represent mean values, since carburization occurred simultaneously with nitriding. The rate of diffusion in a-iron has been determined from calculations based on data obtained by measuring the internal friction of samples at each of several frequencies and temperatures.' The expression for the diffusion of nitrogen in a-iron derived from these experiments is D= 1.4x10-1 e-it tudent Increasing carbon content decreases the diffusion of nitrogen in a-iron.3 Oxygen, either dissolved or combined, has been shown' to exert a marked influence on the diffusion of nitrogen from a nitriding atmosphere. D values increase rapidly with increasing amount of dissolved oxide in the metal, but diffusion is completely inhibited if preliminary oxidation has produced the slightest trace of iron oxide on the surface. Diffusion coefficients have also been calculated from permeability and solubility data,' but these values are of questionable accuracy since the boundary conditions assumed may not actually exist. Experimental Method The method selected for determining the diffusion coefficient of nitrogen in a-iron in the present investigation was the so-called fractional saturation method. This method consists of heating the specimen in an atmosphere of H2-NH8 mixtures of known composition for a predetermined time. Following this treatment, the specimen is analyzed for nitrogen; and the diffusion coefficient is calculated from a known relationship of the fractional saturation, time of diffusion, and dimensions of the specimen. This relation is based on a solution of Fick's second law and assumes that the surface of the specimen immediately reaches a given concentration which remains constant during the diffusion anneal. Tabular solutions are available4-5 and provide the relationship between fractional saturation and the quantity \/Dt /a, where D is the diffusion coefficient in cm2 per sec, t is the time of the diffusion anneal in seconds, and a, in the present experiments, is the half-thickness of the slab specimen in cm. The method is adequately discussed elsewhere.9-10 Material The material for this study consisted of 3/32 in. thick (0.24 cm) carbonyl iron plate. The major impurities in this iron are oxygen and carbon, which are readily removed by long time high temperature treatment in an atmosphere of purified hydrogen. In order to reduce the diffusion anneal time for saturation runs, some of this material was rolled to a thickness of 0.015 in. (0.038 cm) prior to the hydrogen treatment. Contract is a PC-based software program designed to satisfy the main features that have been identified to be lacking from cost estimation systems currently in place in the Australian coal industry. Contract was developed in conjunction with an Australian contracting company to refine the existing core structure used by the company for project evaluation. The key feature of Contract is the availability of analysis functions to explore multiple options within a contract project by altering identified variables. The ability to update project files has been incorporated into Contract to ensure that it is user-friendly and relatively simple to use. Lists of mining equipment and consumables are stored in MS ACCESS database files, along with the supplier details for each item. Each time a project is initiated there is a dynamic link to the database files and the most recent current information is retrieved and linked with the project. President Lien presented Mrs. Holmes with the first of speaker appreciation gifts presented by his firm Amax Coal West, Inc. These were books by Rand-McNally entitled The Executive Golfer Guide. Following the coffee break, Clark Moseley presented the first annual Institute Safety Achievement Awards for the safest mines in the eight member state region. The awards were based on: 1. Infrastructure may be defined as anything necessary for the development and operation of a project, which is peripheral to the basic extraction, handling and processing of material. "Due to the increase of automotive vehicles, available parking spaces become a new type of limited resource in central cities of China, especially in those old districts without visionary urban planning. Additional mechanical parking in underground space is an efficient solution to provide parking spaces under the situation where the urban space is constrained. Shichahai district is an old protected zone in Beijing which is close to the Forbidden City and there are many Hutong (alleyway) and Quadrangles (courtyard house). No spaces are available for car parking on the ground and all vehicles are parking in Hutong without order currently. The local government plan to do renovation work for this district and improve the residential environment. Several innovative solutions are studied including parking in deep shafts, parking under existing buildings by under-pinned method, parking under buildings by covered excavation method, parking under roads built together with utility tunnel etc. 5000 difference types underground parking spaces are planned to be constructed in the following three years. Project examples are also introduced in this paper. INTRODUCTIONCar parking resources are very limited in central cities, especially in old districts without planning for increasing automotive vehicle volume. Traffic get worse when cars park on the side of the roads or move slowly to find parking spaces. Investigation shows the normal (parking space/ automotive vehicle volume) ratio is about 1.2 in most big cities such as New York, Tokyo and Hong Kong, while this ratio is only 0.5 in Beijing. One solution is to move cars out of central cities. But there are still huge parking requirements for the citizens living in central cities. Shichahai district is an historic protected zone in Beijing which is close to the Forbidden City and there are many Hutong and Quadrangles (refer to Figure 1 for project location). No spaces are available for car parking on ground and all vehicles are parked in Hutong without order currently. The local government had a plan to do renovation work of this district and improve the residence environment. 5000 different types of underground parking spaces are planned to be constructed in the following three years. Noise surveys conducted in underground coal mines have consistently indicated that auger mining machines subject the operator and helpers to excessive noise exposure. The machine cutting heads have been identified as the primary noise source. This report documents the research program conducted to (1) investigate the nature of the cutting head noise problem, (2) develop noise control concepts, (3) devise in-mine survivable techniques to implement the noise control concepts, and (4) build and demonstrate prototype reduced-noise auger miner cutting heads. The dynamic forces generated during coal cutting by the brittle fracture of coal are predominently low frequency. The low-frequency (less than 1500 Hz) structural response of the cutting head, therefore, determines the noise radiated by the cutting head. The most feasible methods of reducing the cutting head low-frequency response are to increase both the structural stiffness and the low-frequency damping. A technique was devised to achieve these goals. The standard plate helix was replaced by a sand-filled hollow helix of triangular cross section, and the core diameter was increased with an attendant reduction in helix depth. Extended in-mine tests demonstrated the operational capability of the reduced-noise auger cutting heads. The simple noise control concepts are valid for all continuous miner cutting heads. The sand-filled hollow helix technique, which achieved a 10 dB(A) noise reduction for the auger, can be used on any helix-bearing Cutting head.

Introduction Shale Mining Problems The mining problems an oil shale operator will face are largely determined by the process. Candidate oil recovery processes are surface (above ground processing of mined oil shale), modified in situ (underground with some shale removed), and true in situ (completely underground with no shale removed). The shale removed for modified in situ (MIS) is generally processed by surface techniques. The mining problems are different for each category. Fig. 1 depicts the diversity of western shale deposits. Mining for surface operations will employ underground mining techniques in common use but the scale will be larger. A typical oil shale operation is expected to require 75,000 to 250,000 st (68 000 to 226 800 tons) a stream day of crushed oil shale. This is above the upper limit of current mining operations. Major problems in¬clude: (1) lack of good engineering design properties for oil shale, especially when interbedded with saline minerals at depths below 1,000 ft (305 m); (2) presence of water, hydrogen sulfide, and methane in some areas; (3) necessity for mine disposal of as much retorted oil shale waste as possible; and (4) control of en¬vironmental impacts of mining. Portions of the oil shale deposits in Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah and significant portions of the Devonian shales in the eastern U.S. are adapted to surface mining. No major technological problems are apparent outside overburden thicknesses up to 1,000 ft in the West. However, numerous political and environmental dif¬ficulties have arisen. One major oil shale developer cancelled a planned surface mining operation and currently is pursuing a modified in-situ plan. The eastern shales are closer to the surface than the western, but suffer from many of the same environmental and political problems. Modified in-situ operations face much more severe mining problems than surface efforts. Because the mined stope (called an in-situ "retort" by processors) acts as a retorting process vessel subject to gas flow, combustion, and temperatures between 1,500° and 2,000°F, mining is under highly restrictive limitations. This processing method involves removing between 20 and 40% of the shale deposit and then blasting the roof and walls into the mined space, where the oil is recovered by retorting. Major problems are: (1) swell factor severely limited; (2) need for consistent size distribution of blasted shale; (3) even filling of stope (in-situ retort) by blasted shale with consistent permeability throughout; (4) scaleup of blasting techniques, after optimization; (5) protection of retort pillars and roof during and after retorting; (6) prevention of groundwater percolation; (7)use of ANFO explosive in wet holes; (8) disposing of surface-retorted shale waste in stope; and (9) restoration of site. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) have found their applications in the modelling of unit operations of mineral processing plants. In this research, laboratory-scale tests were conducted, using a three-inch diameter Mozley hydrocyclone. Main parameters included pressure drop at inlet, solid per cent, vortex and apex diameter were adjusted. The corrected cut size (d50c) and the flow rates of underflow and overflow were determined. Multi layers perceptron (MLP) feed forward network architectures were designed to predict the responses. The results showed a good correlation between experimental and network output, for corrected cut size and flow rates. "This paper studies the progress made by hydraulic shovel manufacturers over the last few years, particularly in the areas of productivity increase and operating cost reductions.Five years ago, it was widely considered that the unit production cost for a hydraulic shovel in a mining application was double that of a cable shovel in the same application. The hydraulic machine manufacturers have taken up this challenge, and modern improvements in design, coupled with changes in maintenance techniques, have narrowed the gap to the point where it is valid to ask the question ""will the cable shovel exist in ten years' time?"".Historical BackgroundThe history of the cable shovel goes back to the early 19th century and the industrial revolution. Early machines were steam-powered and ran on rails.The ""power shovel"" and the ""dragline"" were the only mechanical means of mass excavation until the early 1950s. Rail-mounted units gave way to crawlers, which increased flexibility considerably. Some shovels were redesigned as backhoes, and some became extremely large when designed as stripping shovels primarily used in North American coal mines.In the early 1950s growth in hydraulic technology spawned the introduction of the hydraulic excavator, which soon began to replace the smaller cable shovels and backhoes used in the construction industry. They were completely self-contained with either a gasoline or diesel engine and, being much lighter, were more readily transportable.As the excavators grew in size from its early models of 0.5 m3 or less, many of the cable shovel models were discontinued. This was not surprising for several reasons, but the most obvious is that both were often made by the same manufacturer."

In this paper, the author would like to point out with figures that the building industry is one of the key industrial sectors of the national economy in China. And in the coming 15 years, the output of building construction will not in the least decrease, but increase. The requirements for building standards, quality, functions as well as physical environment will also be higher along with the incessant development of the national economy and the gradual raising of people's living standard. China is a country with a vast territory and a great, variety of physical characteristics. The topographic and engineering geotechnical conditions are complex and varies considerably from place to place. Although, in recent years, encouraging progress has been made in building construction, there still exist many problems unsolved or even not explored at all, which we have to tackle in the future design and construction of foundations. Also reviewed in this paper are the achievements attained in the past thirty odd years and the challenge we will face in the foundation engineering field in China.

"Pile installation in soil is a dynamic process which exhibits large deformation in the soil region. Experimental investigation of pile installation is both time and resource intensive. Numerical investigation can be a helpful tool for the analysis of the installation process. Furthermore, numerical analysis allows simulating various soils and loading conditions with ease. Finite Element Method (FEM) – a widely used framework for numerical simulations - fails to perform well for soil mechanics where large deformation and heavy material movement exists. In order to alleviate this shortcoming, Material Point Method (MPM), advancement to FEM has been used. In MPM, material points (particles) are used to represent the domain which carry the information and move over a fixed computational mesh where the governing equations are solved.In the present work, a variation of MPM, called CPDI (Convected Particle Domain Interpolation) is utilised which handles large deformation problems better than the classical MPM. Here, the material points are represented by a spatial domain which deforms according to the particle deformation. This eliminates stress oscillations while particles cross the grids. Implementation is validated and applied to pile installation in dry and saturated soil conditions. A 2D axisymmetric model is chosen, with penalty function method being used for evaluating contact between soil and pile. Sand is modelled via the hypoplastic constitutive description that takes into account large deformation, as well as small strain stiffness. From these simulations, various parameters like stress, void ratio and friction angle are studied.INTRODUCTIONOffshore piling is challenging in terms of testing and execution. Before the execution, predicting an efficient installation method requires study of various parameters, like soil conditions, type of loading, force requirement etc., and are the minimum parameters to be known beforehand. To obtain these parameters, testing a real scale prototype under different conditions is not feasible. Scaled model tests in lab can support in making certain decisions, but fail to replicate real behavior fully. Therefore, the need for a numerical simulation technique emerges, which can provide early predictions easily and accurately. This later can be extended to real scale tests, reducing the number of experimental investigation required.Simulation of displacement pile installation in sand involves large deformation due to penetration process, thereby making the application of FEM impossible, where large deformation causes heavy mesh distortions. Due to this, meshless methods are developed to treat large deformation in a better way. Among various meshless methods, Material Point Method (MPM) shows more applicability to geomechanical problems. This is mainly due to the ease of handling soil, structure and water in a unified manner."

The single track North Strathfield Rail Underpass (NSRU) consists of a dive structure either end of a 148 m long driven tunnel skewed under three live railway tracks. The tunnel is 8 m high, 9 m wide, with a horseshoe profile, excavated by full face using a road header. Ground cover varied between 2.5 m to 3.5 m. Settlements were 5 mm to 15 mm (the latter due to a dyke). A one pass synthetic fibre reinforced shotcrete lining was installed (no lattice girders or steel sets were used). A system of automated robotic total stations was used to provide real time monitoring of the rail track and associated ground formation. Many improvements in the art of underground excavation have appeared during the past two decades. These improvements have been both in methods and in machinery and have resulted in more economical construction of today's tunnels. In the realm of machines, the developments of continuous boring heads for either soft ground or rock, random arm excavators and the sliding tunnel floor (Magic Carpet) have each made contributions toward more rapid tunneling. CONTINUITY OF ADVANCE Tunnel boring machines are often referred to as "continuous excavators". Continuous advance (without cyclical interruptions) has not been achieved, however, in any of the machines now in use. In most rotary-head tunnelers the thrust needed to make the cutters bite into the face is obtained from hydraulic cylinders reacting against anchoring devices held stationary by pads which grip against the sides of the tunnel. With this system the forward motion of the cutting head is continuous only until the propelling cylinders have reached their limit of extension. At this point the grippers must be released, moved forward and reset before a new cycle of advance can be begun. Some machines are built to obtain their propelling thrust from hydraulic cylinders pushing backward against newly-installed rings of tunnel support. This is the customary method for propulsion of shields. With it, each cyclical advance or "shove" must await the erection of a new ring of supports. Faster tunnel driving

The modern Golden Cross mine entered the production phase in January 1992. The project is designed to produce over 100 000 oz/yr of gold and over 300 000 oz/yr of silver during a mine life of eight years. An open pit and an underground mine are operated producing around 850 000 t/yr of ore, to feed a conventional carbon-in-leach processing plant. Golden Cross is owned in joint venture by Coeur Gold New Zealand Limited (80%) and Viking Mining Company Limited (20 %).   Since the start of production several major aspects of the design have altered. The underground mine began as a mechanised cut and fill operation. The cut and fill stoping progresses in 3.3 m flatback lifts with maximum stoping width of 6 m. Where the ore zone is wider than 6 m a post pillar cut and fill method is used. In 1993 a new bench mining plan was introduced between the 270 and 260 levels. Flatbacking continued in the footwall drives in anticipation of variability of the ore width and orientation. The development of levels below the main service 200 level has indicated a possibility of bulk mining the ore block rather than flatbacks. This could lower mining costs but also introduce higher dilution rates. Development is in the advanced stages for trialing this method.

Like most of you, I would rather work on a job than talk about it. But it is fruitful to spend some time taking stock of important developments in the heavy construction field. One of the strongest recent movements affecting the industry has been the push for safety. I regret that it is a recent development. Not that builders were against safety. Too often though, it was easier to continue with dangerous old work methods than to try something new. Too often, it was easier for equipment manufacturers to build production tools with little consideration for worker safety. And too often, accidents and gruesome disasters occurred. The ultimate result of on-the-job injuries in construction and other industries was the Federal Government's Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970. Individual states were required either to accept OSHA or pass updated regulations at least as stringent as the Federal requirements. These new rules must be strictly obeyed -- not just because they carry civil and criminal sanctions -- but because they correct unsafe conditions and reduce hazardous acts. Though some OSHA measures have been criticized as superfluous, most of them do in fact save lives and limbs. Equally important, the tunneler who follows the new safety regulations can be fairly certain of an efficient, uninterrupted operation. Regulations do sometimes bring rewards.

GeoBrain is a facility at GeoDelft with the purpose to provide society with all relevant geo-engineering knowledge and experience in a structured way. On the basis of the available knowledge and experience engineers, decision makers and construction supervisors can come to a fast, reproducible and objective choice, taking into account the consequences. The paper presents examples from the GeoBrain experience databases and forecasting models developed for foundation engineering and directional drilling, or: "GeoBrain Foundations" and "GeoBrain Drilling". GeoBrain is closing the gap between theory and practice. It is aimed directly at reducing uncertainty and the costs of failure, thereby increasing the quality of profession and minimising the risk in geo-engineering works.
