The offshore production of oil and gas resources has been active in the Gulf of Mexico since Kerr- McGee drilled the first commercial well out of the sight of land in 1947. Since then, approximately 60% of the offshore oil/gas production structures used globally have been erected in the GOM to support the production of energy resources’. The shallow, shelf and shelf edge waters of the Gulf of Mexico have reached or are rapidly approaching production maturity, requiring that the fixed structures used to support energy production be removed or otherwise disposed of by suitable means. The use of energetic materials has been determined to be a safe, efficient and cost effective technology to remove fixed offshore structures whose service life has been exceeded.

Reports of delays and cost blowouts in major study and construction projects are becoming increasingly prevalent in the resources industry. This is mainly being attributed to an escalating cost environment associated with the increased number of projects in the development to construction pipeline and a scarcity of competent skilled resources to deliver these projects. However, not all this effect can be directly attributed to the current environment. Historically the mining industry has not performed well in its ability to deliver projects according to the financial and physical parameters forecast in the feasibility study process. To manage the risks associated with delivery of major projects, resource companies need to ensure they use a standardised approach to management of their project development to satisfy project objectives and enable more efficient use of the increasingly limited available resources. Each discrete step in advancing the project from scoping study to operations needs to be integrated, reducing the amount of rework and duplication. This paper is primarily a consolidation of existing ideas on project management systems but also introduces new concepts to solve current issues. It describes the basic components of a typical mining project, the issues that commonly arise, the key attributes, and critical steps required for an effective integrated project management system covering projects from initial scoping studies through to project commissioning and operation. This paper focuses on technical study components of the mine development project with allowance for transitioning to design and construction and operation phases.

"The adsorption and wetting behavior of freshly ground and aged coals has been determined in the presence of a nonionic surfactant. The amount of surfactant adsorption changes with the concentration and ""age"" of the coal. The freshly ground coal has smaller amounts of adsorption at lower surfactant concentrations than the ""aged"" coal whereas at large surfactant concentrations, the order is reversed . In the latter case, more surfactant is adsorbed on fresh coal than on the ""aged"" coal . . It is proposed that at low concentrations, the surfactant adsorbs through both hydrophobic and hydrophilic interactions with the molecule lying parallel to the· surface, whereas at higher concentrations surface micelles form at the hydrophobic sites. The wetting behavior correlates well with the adsorption behavior.INTRODUCTIONNonionic surfactants have many applications in the coal and mineral processing industry. They can be used as dispersing agents to modulate flotation, flocculation and filtration of particulates (1). They can also be used to increase the wettability of hydrophobic solids such as coal and can hence be used as dust suppressants (2,3). Although the adsorption of representative nonionic surfactants such as Triton N-101 (an ethoxylated nonylphenol with 9.5 moles of ~thylene oxide and HLB equal to 13.4) have been studied extensively on substrates such as calcium carbonate (4), silica (5) carbon black (6) and graphite (7), very few studies are available for coals. Coals differ from other substrates with respect to two important characteristics: 1) coal are porous and 2) coals consist of a patchwork of hydrophobic and hydrophilic sites (8). Since the adsorption characteristics of a surfactant are influenced significantly by the nature of the substrate the characteristics of the coals must be taken into consideration."

The objective of this project was to develop technical data and evaluate performance and utility of leaky feeder communications systems currently used in North American underground mines. The desired information was obtained principally through on-site surveys. Altogether, six of the seven mining companies known to be using leafy feeder communications were visited. This report covers the findings of these surveys. In addition, the report provides a brief background summary of mine communications, a technical discussion of leaky feeder systems, and conclusions and recommendations based on the results of the survey.

Codelco’s Salvador Project has been operating a block/panel caving mine for more than 50 years. This underground mining method dynamically mixes the ore and dilution. As a result, forecasting grades is difficult and achieving 100 per cent extraction of the reserves is practically impossible. A substantial volume of the ore mixed with dilution becomes remnant ore and remains to be subsequently extracted.A potential open pit mine is under evaluation at Codelco’s Salvador Project, which includes the extraction of remnant ore post-block caving extraction. An effective methodology has been implemented to estimate what is left behind once the underground mine has closed. A new mixing method using the Cellular Automata (Alfaro and Saavedra, 2004) approach has been used to allow estimation of the remnant ore with a sufficient level of confidence to be included as part of the open pit reserve.A remnant block model is created using elements such as in situ block model, drawpoint layouts, historical production records and the drawpoint extraction. Using this information, simulations of the extraction of the mine by month from 1959 to 2019 were completed, using different mixing scenarios and trying to replicate the tonnage and grade extracted.Finally, the remnant block model is categorised using a score card with four inputs to assess the risk of the estimation of this material into a category class (measured, indicated and inferred).CITATION:Villa, D and Farías, F, 2016. "Performance data for both wet and dry grinding of materials have been obtained in this novel, planetary ring-roller mill over wide ranges or operating conditions. The Szego mill consists of a stationary cylindrical shell inside which grooved, radially mobile rollers rotate, driven by a central shaft. The mill has several internal design variables such as number, diameter and length of rollers as well as size, shape and pitch oi helical grooves. It is compact, has a high specific capacity, modest power consumption, and can grind many materials down to ultrafine powders. Illustrative data on product fineness and mill power consumption are given along with results from studies on grinding kinetics.INTRODUCTIONThe extensive use and importance of grinding as a unit operation, coupled with the rather low energy efficiency of conventional equipment provide a challenging incentive to investigate novel methods of comminution. Yet, most current development work is taking place in mill performance modelling and optimization, or with various detailed improvements rather than in the field of new equipment development.This paper is a report on the development of a ring-roller mill invented by the late L.L. Szego which embodies several novel concepts. The mill has a broad range of applications, may be operated wet or dry, and can grind materials down to ultrafine sizes with modest energy consumption. It has been developed by General Comminution Inc. in close cooperation with the University of Toronto."

INVESTIGATIONS IN 1936In 1936 the Industrial Pulmonary Disease Committee of the Medical Research Council investigated both clinically and radiologically a group of fifty workers who had been exposed for a number of years to the inhalation of alumina in the reduction factory of the British Aluminium Company. The results are shown in Table 1.They also considered the sickness records of all the workers (Hill, 1936), as compared with those in other parts of the factory (Table 2).

A requisite corollary of mineral sand mining on North Stradbroake Island (Queensland (Qld), Australia) has been the progressive rehabilitation of post-mined lands for the revegetation of native subtropical Eucalypt communities. Since 2005, rigorous environmental monitoring has been undertaken to verify the annual development of post-rehabilitated sites. From these long-term analyses, a chronosequence of land revegetation (ranging from three to 26 years postrehabilitation) was developed to examine the rehabilitation trajectories of various post-mined sites in relation to proximal undisturbed locations. Here, we identified that some sites may be deviating from the intended natural analogues as evidenced by the opportunistic colonisationand otherwise æinvasiveÆ behaviour of a regionally native species (Black Sheoak - Allocasuarina littoralis), which appear to be displacing the intended Eucalypt varieties. Although it is recognised that the broader data trends correspond to distinct periods of adaptive modifications to the implementation of rehabilitation (ie pre- and post-1995), this analysis focuses on further identifying potential above- and belowground feedback mechanisms underlying these divergent ecological outcomes.CITATION:Audet, P, Gravina, A, Glenn, V, McKenna, P, Vickers, H, Gillespie, M J and Mulligan, D R, 2012. From their study of the anisotropy of grain boundary mobility in aluminum, the authors conclude that tilt boundaries have a higher mobility than twist boundaries because the atomic misfit at the pure-twist boundary is relatively small compared to the misfit at a tilt boundary for a given amount of misorientation. If this is true, then one would expect a twist boundary to have a lower grain boundary energy than the corresponding tilt boundary. Fig. 6, taken from the work of Gjostein and Rhines,10 shows that this is indeed the case for [001]-cu tilt and twist boundaries in the high-angle region, thus lending support to the authors' conclusion.

This research involves the investigation of phase transformations in the platinum-chromium coated system. Single-layer 0.1 µm platinum coatings were deposited via electron beam deposition on 99.98 percent pure chromium substrates. Specimens were subjected to systematic heat treatment in a vacuum furnace at 900°C for up to 20 hours. Phase formation and the changes in surface morphology were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).Both CrPt and Cr3Pt phases are formed during heat treatment for different times at 900°C. Significant changes in the morphology of this coated system were detected after heat treatment at 900°C for 20 hours.

The use of rock-socketed Augered Cast-In-Place (ACIP) piles is new to the Austin and central Texas region. This case history describes the design methodology, load test results, quality control procedures and the rate of production pile installation for the first large commercial project where ACIP piles were used in Austin. The piles were 24 inches in diameter and extended through about 45 ft of alluvial materials to be socketed 6 ft into limestone. A full-scale instrumented load test was performed on a test pile that was loaded to 452 tons and held for 24 hours. Telltales were installed in the middle and the tip of the test pile. As part of the overall quality control procedures, singlehole sonic integrity logging was performed on the production piles to verify structural integrity during pile installation. During pile production, an average of 14 piles per day were installed, which is approximately seven times faster than the original design that consisted of drilled shaft foundations.

"Explosions in bituminous coal mines are preventable. The combination of adequate ventilation, thorough rock-dusting, and water on the cutter bars of mining machines and of empty and loaded cars will certainly reduce the hazard to a minimum, if not remove it entirely. This is the attitude taken by the Woodward Iron Co. in lessening or removing the dust and gas explosion hazard from its Dolomite and Mulga mines.This report was made possible through the willingness of Frank H. Crockard, president of the Woodward Iron Co. to make records available and to authorize their publication for the benefit of the coal-mining industry.The compilation of these data and preparation of maps was facilitated by the cooperation of M. Heard, general superintendent of coal mines, J. B. Whatley, assistant general super-intendent of coal, and R. P. Whetmore, chief mining engineer.The Dolomite and Mulga mines are about 16 miles southwest of Birmingham, Jefferson County, Ala., on a company owned and operated railroad which connects ore mines, coal mines, coke ovens, and furnaces.In the Dolomite property there is a 30°, 860-foot, double-tracked slope for hoisting, three manway and air slopes and one air shaft, all in rock.At Mulga there is a 220-foot hoisting shaft, an air shaft and two manways, and material and air slopes, all in rock to the coal bed.The coal in both mines comes from the Pratt bed, which is the next coal above the Mary Lee bed in the Warrior Basin. The coal is horizontal or slightly undulating, with thickness varying from 36 to 72 inches and averaging 50 inches.The method of mining is essentially room-and-pillar with modifications for mechanized sections. The mines produced approximately 1,100,000 tons with 2,328,309 man-hours exposure n 1929 and 900,000 tons with 1,697,436 man-hours exposure in 1930.Through the work of the safety department the entire personnel in the coal mines, as well as in other departments, makes safety an essential part of efficient operation.Both mines are gassy; Dolomite produces about 334,000 cubic feet and Mulga about 919,000 cubic feet of methane every 24 hours.The ventilation maps, two of Dolomite mines (figs. 1 and 2) and one of Mulga (fig. 3) give as much of the details of ventilation as is practicable to put on maps of such scale. As will be seen from these maps there are two main ventilating fans in Dolomite mine and two in Mulga mine and the general direction of the air travel is indicated by long arrows to fan 1 and short arrows to fan 2 in each mine. Each fan has a gas or steam auxiliary drive and each mine has a complete fan and power unit ready for operation in emergency.In Dolomite, recently taken data show that fan 1 exhausts 82,000 cubic feet of air per minute at 3.2-inch water-gage pressure, with an analyzed methane content of 0.15 per cent, and fan 2 exhausts 115,500 cubic feet of air at 3.8-inch pressure and 0.10 per cent of methane. In addition, a Capell fan at No. 2 air shaft is a standby or emergency unit.In Mulga recently taken data show that fan 1 exhausts 83,000 cubic feet of air per minute at 3.0-inch pressure and 0.18 per cent of methane, and fan 3 exhaust 119,000 cubic feet of air per minute at 5.4 inch pressure and 0.35 per cent of methane. Fan 2 at No. 2 shaft is a standby or emergency unit for the Mulga mine.The ventilation is on a split system in both mines. All part split and total returns are measured, sampled, and analyzed weekly, requiring one man two days each week. During December, 1930, 77 samples were collected and analyzed in Mulga and 78 in Dolomite. Two weekly reports covering part of December, 1930, are given here so that they can be studied to show control of ventilation in the Dolomite and Mulga mines. In the event that a split sample shows more than 0.50 per cent of methane, immediate steps are taken to lower the explosive-gas content. The reports follow:"

"The consequences of ineffective mine closure in South Africa are evident from the number of abandoned mines and operations on extended care-and-maintenance, the on-selling of mines to less well-resourced companies to close, and increasing illegal mining activities. However, the data to substantiate these observations and provide insight into the underlying issues has not been available. Through the Promotion of Access to Information Act, a list of mine closure certificates applied for between 2011 and 2016 and a list of certificates granted over the same period for all nine regions of South Africa was obtained. From the analysis of this data, we show that the mine closure system as implemented in South Africa is largely ineffective. Although closure certificates are being granted, these are for prospecting sites and small-scale mines, which have a relatively small environmental impact. No large mines of any environmental significance were relinquished over the period under review, with very few applying for closure certificates. Furthermore, the issuing of closure certificates varies significantly between regional offices, with the success rate for applications being generally low and issuing of certificates taking an extended period. IntroductionThere are a number of concerns with the mine closure process as practiced in South Africa, and these have largely been laid at the door of government. Alberts et al. (2017) stress that the legislation generally conforms to international best practice. However, the system is ‘complex and unwieldy’, involving various pieces of legislation and different government departments with overlapping requirements and different interpretations of the law. A further area of concern is the capacity and competence of government to implement legislation. The ‘shortage of relevant mine closure skills and knowledge within the regulator’ was identified by van Druten and Bekker (2017) as a key contributor to unsuccessful closure. Lack of capacity and resources within the regulator has also been highlighted by Botham, Kelso, and Annegarn (2011) and Milaras, McKay, and Ahmed (2014). A recent study of the mineral application process by Corruption Watch (2017) indicates that positions in the regulator have been frozen for many years, leading to a shortage of staff, and that unqualified individuals have been appointed. There is also the perceived reluctance of government to grant closure in order to limit transfer of the liability to the state and delay the inevitable job losses."

THE mines operated by the South American Development Co. are located in the Zaruma mining district of southwestern Ecuador. They are near the old mining town of Zaruma, which is the only important city in the canton of the same name. The district is situated in the upper end of a valley lying between two spurs of the Cordillera, one of which may be considered the Coast Range and the other an intermediate range. The mining camp proper, known as Portovelo, and the plant are 2.4 km. south of Zaruma, on the north bank of the Amarillo River, a tributary of the Tumbes River, which flows southwestward through Peru to the Pacific. Portovelo is difficult of access; it is reached from Guayaquil by means of river steamers and muleback. Embarking at Guayaquil, the route is down the Guayas River, across the Jambeli Canal, and up the Santa Rosa River to Santa Rosa, a distance of 177 km. From Santa Rosa, the road or trail follows the Santa Rosa River, then across the summit of the Coast Range into Portovelo, a distance of 74 km.-a two-day trip on muleback. The mining property of the South American Development Co. comprises 297 lode claims and 142 placer claims. The combined lode claims cover an area, roughly rectangular in shape, 9000 m. long from north to south by 4000 m. wide; the northern edge of the rectangle is about 3000 m. north of the central plaza of Zaruma. Mineral lands in Ecuador are held by virtue of an annual tax per claim paid to the central government, no surface rights being included.

"Introduction. The data obtained in recent research work by the Bureau of Mines show that the analysis of the gases dissolved in underground waters may be used by the prospector or geologist as an additional aid in discovering new oil or gas fields. The hydrocarbons present in the water serve to indicate whether oil or gas sands exist in the region through which the waters have passed. A portable field apparatus has been developed by the bureau which can be used for removing and analyzing the gases dissolved in the waters. This apparatus and the method of u are described in this paper. Results are given of analyses made on waters from various localities, and the significance of these waters with reference to the detection of oil and gas.Any liquid, with the exception of mercury, if permitted to come in contact with eases or vapors will absorb a definite amount thereof. This action depends on the following factors: (1) The kind of gas; (2) the percentage composition of the eases in contact with the liquid; (3) the pressure of the gas; and (4) the composition and temperature of the liquid. For our present purpose it is only necessary is consider two of these factors - namely, the gas or vapor (natural gas and light petroleum vapor), and the liquid (water).If water of underground origin traverses a gas or oil sand it will absorb a definite quantity of hydrocarbon vapors, and will carry these vapors to the surface when tapped by a well. When the water is exposed to the air at the sur¬face, the eases and vapors will be given off and their place taken by oxygen and nitrogen from the air. Therefore, an analysis of the gases in waters reaching the surface from an underground source should be of value in determining whether these waters have traversed or came in contact with hydrocarbon-bearing strata. With the apparatus herein described it is possible to determine whether the vapors are mainly of natural gas on sition (methane CH1) and ethane (C2H6 ), or are come posed mostly of heavier petroleum vapors (ethane, propane (C3E8) and buttane (C4H10)."

In this paper, the surrounding rocks and the supports in a longwall are taken as an integral, i.e. a system. The structural characteristics and behavior of the system are discussed based on in-situ observations. A set of equations, which describe the interaction among the support, immediate roof and main roof, are developed. These equations can be used to design the longwall powered supports more reasonably and economically.

Due to the approaching depletion of reserves in the Witbank Coalfield, and the fact that the Waterberg Coalfield is as yet under developed, there is increasing pressure to extend the lives of the operating coal mines in the Witbank Coalfield. One potential source of coal is the old pillars, often small and at shallow depth, that were not left with secondary extraction in mind. At face value, some of these pillars appear to be suitable for secondary mining due to their high safety factors. However, it is known that over time, these pillars have scaled and the current sizes are smaller than the as-mined dimensions. It is also known that at shallow depth, the overburden is often less likely to fail during secondary mining, resulting in high abutment loads on the unmined pillars. The paper proposes a systematic method to pre-evaluate those old pillars for the possibility of stooping. The method consists of elements of fundamental methods and newly developed technology. In essence, it revolves around using empirical methods to estimate current pillar dimensions, followed by numerical modelling to investigate the probability of progressive pillar failure and then fundamental methods to determine the limits of applicability of the numerical model.

Headrace Tunnels and parts of the Access Adit Tunnels of Kárahnjúkar Hydropower project, KAR-14, in Iceland will be excavated using three full-face Robbins Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM). TBM sizes range from 7.23 to 7.63 meters in diameter and the total headrace tunnel length is approximately 40 km. The crushed rock is transported on conveyor belts to disposal areas near each Adit. The estimated average excavation rate is approximately 25 meters per day per machine. Electricity will begin to flow in April 2007, and the project is scheduled for completion in 2009. This paper is divided into four sections. In the PROJECT OVERVIEW section, a short overview of the scope of the project is presented. In the GEOLOGY section, the geological condition along the tunnel drives is briefly introduced. The TBM DESIGN section discusses the various design criteria and the resulting machine specifications. The paper concludes in the TBM OPERATION section with a case history describing the tunneling operation from start-up to the time of the writing of this paper.
