This paper presents a summary of the current employment practices with respect to recent graduates in Mining Engineering, as observed at the Colorado school of Mines. Because our experience is limited to our own group of students it prob¬ably does not correspond exactly to that experienced at other mining schools, but because the Colorado School of Mines graduates approximately 15 per cent of the men in this field our experience is probably representative. We have chosen to limit the information presented here to that pertaining to the period since July 1, 1960. This corresponds to the experience with the class of 1961 and to the experience of the class of 1962 up to the end of the first semester of the senior year. There were 36 mining engineering degrees given in 1961 In a class numbering 43 senior. We expect to give 30 first degrees in 1962 in a class numbering 44 seniors.

Robots cleaning and oiling the moulds, hydraulic units opening and closing them fully independently. Artificial Intelligence (AI) controls the works and ensures the quality requirements. Data management has become a massive tool from a simple data collector towards a control and optimization tool. Sensors controlling concrete maturity and supporting the precast team to optimize the concrete mix. These state of the art and new innovations will be presented in this paper.

The cost of bauxite is a multiple of the Bauxite Consumption Factor and the Unit Cost of Bauxite, and is a major cost item at most alumina plants. A simulation procedure has been developed that realistically portrays aggregate growth and disintegration for particular types of floc structures in water and wastewater treatment processes. The procedure requires local dissipation rates and specification of an interaction distance between colliding particles. A principal difficulty encountered in polymer flocculation, however, arises from changes in conformation of adsorbed macromolecules. Therefore, in systems where polymer flocculation occurs by bridging, dynamic changes in the particle size distribution depend upon the interaction of nonlinear. stochastic hydrodynamics with particles whose growth results from a number of concurrent and sequential random processes.

Respirable coal dust has been long recognized as a leading cause of multiple lung diseases. Efforts aimed at reducing dust concentration in underground mines have been made, but increases in coal workers’ pneumoconiosis incidence rates over the last 20 years among U.S. miners are concerning. Dust deposition and water spray suppression are two types of dust removal mechanisms in underground mining activities. In this study, laboratory tests were conducted to investigate the respirable dust decay characteristics during deposition and suppression processes in a confined dust chamber. Dust concentration and size distribution were monitored continuously throughout each 60-minute test. A number-basis particle size distribution was used for analysis to capture the changes of smaller size fractions within the investigated dust sample. This study found that around 62.1% of respirable dust particles were deposited at the end of the deposition test. In addition, the final deposition rate for very fine particles can be less than 20%. The results from the suppression test indicate that larger particles were removed quickly; however, sub-micron particles remain suspended through the 60- minute water spray, and particles under 0.5 µm can be considered irremovable dust under single-spray operation conditions. This study also observed the resuspension of a significant amount of sub-micron particles by the water spray. The results of this study provide basic information for improving dust control strategies and can be utilized to improve the water spray performance for reducing airborne dust levels.

Within the realm of flow control in abrasive and corrosive slurry applications, there is no room for a one-size-fits-all approach. To ensure minimal maintenance, maximum uptime and the lowest overall cost of ownership, the slurry processing toolbox must contain countless alloy and elastomeric pairings ? each carefully targeted to the particular process medium and conditions. This materials selection process is best tackled by turning to expert slurry application engineers and valve product managers who work closely with customers to specify the optimal valve for the given parameters. ?When plant operators and design engineers apply conventional valves in abrasive applications or use metal seated valves or simply apply the wrong valve for a particular flow control situation, it typically leads to rapid valve failure, the potential for hazardous leakage, unexpected shutdowns and costly downtime,? said Cal Cobb, valve products manager for Weir Minerals North America, manufacturer of Isogate slurry valves for service in mining, minerals processing and metallurgical environments.

The University of Alabama Mineral Resources Institute (MRI) has developed a unique process for selective fatty acid flotation of carbon-ate gangue from sedimentary apatites "francolite" in the pH range of 4-6 without collector conditioning of the pulp. The process, which does not require an apatite depressant, was modified to beneficiate a high Mgo siliceous phosphate matrix from south Florida. The modified process includes two flotation stages, one for carbonate removal, as mentioned above, and the other for phosphate recovery from the siliceous gangue. The selective flotation separation of the carbonate and phosphate, from siliceous constituents of the matrix at various pH levels and collector dosages are discussed. In the carbonate flotation stage, about 70% of the Mgo was rejected in the froth and the phosphate flotation stage produced concentrates analyzing about 31% P2O5,0.7% HgO and 4% insol. The overall P2O5 recovery in the two stages is about 85%.

The fly ash from coal combustion often has a high unburned-carbon content. This can make it unusable as a cement admixture, which is the major fly ash utilization market. As a result, high-carbon fly ashes currently disposed of by landfilling, at sometimes considerable expense. In this paper, the use of froth flotation to remove the unburned carbon from fly ash is described. Three different fly ashes were studied, which had Loss-on-Ignition (LOI) values of 6.79, 6.90, and 11.11 %. It was found that the use of an alkanolamide/oil mixture as a froth-conditioning reagent could greatly reduce the amount of collector needed, by increasing the affinity of the collector for oxidized carbonaceous surfaces. For each of the three fly ashes, froth flotation reduced the LOI of the ash to less than 2% which is well below the ASTM specification of no ' more than 6.0% LOI for Class F fly ash. Increasing carbon content of the ash tended to increase the quantities of reagents needed in flotation.

Flotation collectors play a crucial role in mineral flotation by selectively adhering to mineral surfaces and aiding in their separation from gangue material. They are heteropolar molecules, as defined by Sutherland and Wark (1955), featuring non-polar hydrocarbon chains and polar groups interacting with mineral surfaces to induce hydrophobicity selectively. The importance of collectors in mineral processing, as underscored by Lotter and Bradshaw (2010), lies in their ability to enhance recovery rates and improve selectivity, thereby optimizing the extraction of valuable minerals from complex ores. Collectors are classified based on their mechanism of action, as proposed by Laskowski (2010). This classification categorizes collectors into three groups: water-soluble compounds, water-insoluble “oily” collectors, and water-insoluble amphipathic compounds forming molecular films at the water/gas interface. This complements the chemical structure-based classification by Sutherland and Wark (1955) and Suoninen and Laajalehto (1993), offering a comprehensive understanding of collector diversity in flotation systems. Collector selection is an iterative process crucial for optimizing mineral processing efficiency, as emphasized by Lotter and Bradshaw (2010). Understanding the significance of collector mixing or synergy outcomes is paramount for enhancing mineral flotation efficiency and sustainability. Taguta, O’Connor, and McFadzean (2018) demonstrate that mixed collector systems enhance interaction enthalpies and microflotation recoveries, indicating improved performance. McFadzean, Castelyn, and O’Connor (2012), along with Critchley and Riaz (1991), delve into investigating synergistic interactions between collectors, offering insights for strategic selection. Observations from the study of collector synergy, as noted by Wakamatsu et al. (1980), reveal nuanced relationships surpassing individual collector behaviors. The methodology outlined in this paper provides valuable guidance for classifying and selecting collectors based on specific application needs, while also suggesting the potential for synergistically improving recovery across fine, intermediate, and coarse particles.

My topic today is future trends in compensation for the mining industry. I seldom get the chance to speak about a subject of such immediate interest to an audience, so I would like to make the most of this opportunity by telling you that everybody in this room will become rich beyond his wildest dreams in the next few years. I would like to open my talk that way, but in compensation, like everything else, there is a great gap between dreams and reality. Back to reality. When we talk about compensation, we?d better define our terms because the compensation is really an umbrella for five basic types of payment made to management personnel. Slide 1 identifies these elements of compensation.

In many cases the roof strata of a bedded deposit may be considered as a composite of rock beams of rectangular cross section, whose component layers differ in thickness and may or may not be separable from each other when they are subjected to loading by their own weight. An analytical study of the behavior of such multiple-layer beams is extremely difficult owing to the heterogeneity and anisotropy of rock materials. The complexity is revealed by the fringe photographs obtained from several series of barodynamic photostress experiments conducted on various types of multiple-layer model beams of a medium-grained Bedford limestone. Further discussion on the applicability of barodynamic photostress techniques to the model study of the behavior of mine roofs in stratified geologic media is presented by comparing the phenomenological observations recorded in this investigation.

Although fluorspar is considered an industrial mineral by usage and value, its geological occurrence and the mining and milling methods employed make it more akin to the non-ferrous metal ores. Likewise methods of exploration for it are more like those used in the search for lead and zinc, with which fluorspar is often mixed. In fact, it often takes the mixture of fluorspar, lead, zinc, plus maybe barite to add up to enough recoverable values to make the mineral an ore by definition. This is so true where the fluorspar portion is low grade, perhaps less than 25 percent. Until the development of modern steel milling in World War I times, the invention of aluminum smelting, and development of the fluorine chemical industry and air conditioning, there were few uses for fluorspar aside from ceramic fluxes in the flint glass industry and for uses as glazes for pottery and china. Pure fluorite crystals have long been admired as semi-precious and ornamental minerals of many delicate colors.

Natural and synthetic colors are used in almost every facet of our daily lives as a means of communication and expression. Natural ochres, umbers, hematites, and magnetites were once used in their crude or semi-processed state for their pigment value in construction products and low-end coatings applications, while yielding, in recent years, to synthetically produced iron oxides for more sophisticated products. Today, through innovative mining, processing, and marketing techniques, natural iron oxide pigments are once again gaining strong inroads into products and markets requiring precise chemical and physical characteristics. With our focus on environmental consciousness and resource conservation, value added natural iron oxides provide an economical and responsible alternative to our color needs.

One year ago this month, we in Central Florida witnessed the beginning of a most exciting and glamorous attraction. After three years of construction and anticipation, Walt Disney World opened its gates near Orlando and during its first year of operation received a flood of over 10 million visitors---half of all who came to Florida last year! The side effects of this newest addition to Florida have been phenomenal. Traffic on heavy days has been backed up for 30 miles from the amusement park along a major interstate highway. Hotels and motels have been jammed packed for months, and reservations are still difficult to make. Gasoline stations, restaurants and souvenir shops are doing a booming business. Everywhere you look as you ride the highways of Central Florida you see the signs of growth. New hotels spring up almost overnight. Golf courses galore. New housing projects and apartments sprawl where orange groves used to be. New roads criss-cross areas which were once deserted. There seems to be no end to the steady influx of tourists and new residents to the Sunshine State. And it's mainly because that we are the Sunshine State that they come. Air and water pollution is and has been at a minimum in Florida. Pollution and emissions are fighting words among some groups dedicated to preserving the bountiful environment we share in Florida. Little wonder then that some of these people display concern when they learn that just 50 miles from the entrance to the Magic Kingdom of Disney, phosphate draglines strip away thousands of acres of land each year to extract one of our nation's most precious

"Longwall top-coal caving (LTCC) mining technique is one of the important methods for underground thick seam extraction in China. The coal seam in LTCC panel is divided into two parts: bottom-coal and top-coal. The bottom-coal is mined by conventional longwall method while the top-coal is mined by caving method. The top-coal caving process in LTCC and block caving process in metal mine are both gravity flow of loose ore/coal blocks. However, the presence of caving shield in LTCC makes the characteristics of drawing body shape in the two caving processes differ a lot. This paper discusses the influence of caving shields on the characteristics of drawing body shapes in light of recent studies of the top-coal drawing process. The theoretical model for describing the drawing body shape in LTCC is proposed both along the seam strike and seam inclination. Then, the experimental data are used to validate the correctness of the theoretical model. Furthermore, two examples of how the theoretical findings assist LTCC mining are given and discussed.INTRODUCTIONLongwall top-coal caving (LTCC) mining technique and large-cutting-height mining technique have been widely used for extracting thick coal seams in China. About 0.6–0.7 billion metric tons of coal come from longwall top-coal caving panels every year. The maximum annual production is 15 million metric tons per panel _The mining method employed in such panel is a combination of top-coal caving mining technique and large-cutting-height mining technique, which is suitable for seam height between 12–20 m, as shown in Figure 1. "There’s a bit of confusion and misinformation in the tunneling and underground construction industry regarding contractor joint ventures. If it was all so clear I would not have been "asked" to write this article. For those of us on the contractors’ side of the fence, joint venture business relationships have been a part of life for a long time. But even for contractors, there can be a bit of confusion, and it normally begins on bid day.How often have you received bid results and wondered (out loud, usually), "Who the hell are the Lake Mead Intake Constructors"? or the "Regional Connector Constructors"? Once you get past the name, you see that there is nothing behind Oz’s curtain other than a couple of contractors bidding and building work in an attempt to make a profit. So take a few minutes to read the rest of this, and I’ll do my best to dispel a few mythWhat is a joint venture?In some form or fashion, joint ventures are as old as industry itself. In the United States, some of the earliest (and largest) joint ventures involved the railroads and oil companies in the late 1800s. In the United States’ underground construction industry, joint venture names such as, Healy-Greenfield, Green and Winston, Gates & Fox and Walsh, Shea-Ball, Kenny-Paschen and S&M-Traylor bring back memories of successful joint ventures that operated over many projects.There are nearly as many definitions for joint ventures (JVs) as there are attorneys. A short and simple definition is, "an association of two or more companies engaged in a singular, for-profit business enterprise without actual partnership or incorporation." That’s it. Two or more contractors decide to partner up for one or more projects. One benefit of the JV relationship is that the partners typically do not need to file incorporation documents, or articles of organization within the state where they intend to operate. So it is a relatively easy business arrangement to pull together. Other benefits of the JV arrangement include: • Oportunities to gain new expertise and capacity.• The ability for firms to move into new geographic markets.• JV agreements are not long-term commitments.• Sharing of financial support for a project.• Sharing of financial risks within a project. between the partners.• Can complicate dispute resolutions with the owner and between partners"

The transport of slurry within the ball mill depends on the peripheral velocity and porosity of the ball charge. Residence time distribution and mill hold up are of-ten used as indicators of the mode of transport. In this work, the transport problem is tackled via direct simulation of the three dimensional motion of the ball charge. In doing so, the following quantities are calculated: (i) ball size distribution as a function of the distance from the feed end of the mill (ii) mean peripheral and longitudinal velocity and longitudinal velocity of balls of different sizes, and (iii) the spatial distribution of porosity within the ball charge. Hence, the problem of transport is handled as a motion of part of the slurry with the ball charge and part as hydrodynamic flow through the porous structure.

Automated drilling in surface mines is here, it?s successful, and it?s already at work in mines around the globe. Coal, copper, iron and gold mines in large mining countries such as Canada, Australia, South Africa, the United States and Chile are meeting mining objectives previously ruled out as unattainable. Pit Viper automation enables operators to accomplish more objectives safely. Operator assist functions like AutoLevel, AutoDrill, Auto Rod Changer and multi-rig teleremote control are a few of the features mines are using to gain consistent, sustainable productivity.

Traveling grate is a widely used process for iron ore pellet production; however, the thermal state of pellets in drying section is still unclear. In this study, the temperature distribution of drying section was investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Based on the calculated results of airflow velocity, space temperature distribution, and the temperature change of pellets, it concluded that there is a coupling effect in drying section in traveling grate. The gas with higher temperature in DDD transfers heat to UDD through the gap of the insulation board, and the temperature gradient of the pellet bed changed before reaching the insulation board. The characteristics of pellet bed expected to appear in DDD was displayed in UDD in advance. Moreover, a contrast experiment was conducted to verify the model.

A couple of miles southwest of the town of Saltville in the western tip of Virginia is a little village called Plasterco. Gypsum has been produced in this area since about the year 1815, being originally found as small outcrops at the surface. Production in the early days was very small, and the use of the mineral was limited to that of "land plaster" or ground gypsum which was spread on the land to sweeten the soil. In the late 1800's, a small calcining plant was constructed and the production of gypsum plaster began. About this same time, the surface rock was depleted and it became necessary to begin underground mining operations in order to maintain a continuous supply of raw material. The United States Gypsum Company became interested in this property in 1909, and has operated there ever since, having enlarged the calcining mill and built a plant for the manufacture of gypsum wall-board in the middle 1920's. Production of gypsum continues from underground' mining operations, and the present mine at Plasterco is now about 1,000 feet below the surface, making it the deepest gypsum mine' in the world.
