In longwall mining, ventilation is considered one of the more effective means of controlling gases and dust. In order to study longwall ventilation in a controlled environment, U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers built a unique physical model called the longwall instrumented aerodynamic model (LIAM). The LIAM is a 1:30 scale physical model geometrically designed to simulate a single longwall panel. It has an 8.94 by 4.88 m (29 by 16 ft) footprint with a simulated face length of 220 m (720 ft) in full scale. LIAM is built with critical details of the face, gob and mining machinery, and scaled to preserve the physical and dynamic similitude. This paper discusses the gob-face interaction, airflow patterns within the gob, and airflow dynamics on the face for varying roof caving characteristics. Results are discussed to show the impact of caving behind the shields on longwall ventilation.

Many factors, some of which are not easily defined or described, must be considered in the design of a hydraulic backfill system. After participating in the design of several plants, I have a conviction that future refinements in sandfill systems must come in large part, from the merging of good design ideas and information from existing operating plants. It is important then, that we document and publish information on existing plant designs and their operating characteristics. This information will then be available for use by our successors and later innovators in hydraulic fill placement. The Mayflower hydraulic sandfill system is similar to other plants. The intent of this paper is to describe only this system's unique design and operating characteristics. I will not describe in any detail, the familiar elements of the system. I will document some of the observed hydraulic characteristics of the system, elaborate on some of the design situations that had to be solved, and will discuss operating factors that are not generally described in our technical literature.

Within the exploration programs carried on by the Consejo de Recursos Naturales No Renovables, the one with the largest coverage (more than 75, 000 square kilometers) is the northern Coahuila Exploration Project. Due to its nature, geochemical exploration methods were selected to obtain quick results. The program included essentially, three main stages : 1. - A regional geochemical stream sediment survey. 2. - Semi-detailed studies of the anomalous areas selected in the previous stage, and 3. - Detailed exploration of the promising areas. To the date, the first two stages have been completed, and the third one is being carried on. The work was started on september 1972, and it will probably take one more year before drilling can be started, but at the end of stage three it is expected that at least 5 important targets will have been detected. The regional work was conducted by 3 field crews, but the detailed program is being done by only one.

We live in a world of change and the mining industry is enjoying some of the most rapid changes today that have been seen in a long time, We'd like you to open your mind to a new concept in material handling. Figure # 1 Shows a new concept combining some of the proven application advantages of the power shovel with which we are all familiar, and applies the advantages of the dragline for the benefit of the user. First, the hydraulic excavator enjoys tooth forces of the shovel because the dipper is attached to the machine with a dipperstick and boom, and can often actually realize greater tooth forces than a shovel because of the prize action of the dipper in hard digging. Second, the hydraulic excavator enjoys the application advantage of the dragline because both the operator and the machine are up above, sitting on top where the operator oversees the excavation and the machine's operating work range is greatly increased.

Today's increasing needs for rapid excavation have stimulated efforts to break rocks without explosives. The application of electric energy for this purpose has been studied by a number of investigators. Following principles have been used in electrical rock breaking: 1. induction heating5 2. high frequency heating4, 14 3. microwave heating6 4. contact resistance heating9,12 5. resistance heating11,13 6. electron beam heating1, 3 7. plasma jet heating2, 8 8. arc heating7 9. condensor discharge energy14 In this paper the presentation of the principles of electrical fragmentation is limited to a process called "electrofracing". This technique uses electrical heating of rock by electrode contact resistance9 and resistance heating" phenomena. The electrically induced stresses inside of rock generate forces which break up the material. The fracturing of ore takes place by tensile stresses instead of compressive forces. The electric energy merely creates fractures in the rock and the separation of fractured material takes place by subsequent mechanical handling. Energy requirements in secondary breaking of iron ores have been about one to two kilowatt-hours per ton of ore. Power requirement is a function of the degree of fragmentation.

Measuring the specific gravity of a pulp in concentrating plants is a relative, y simple procedure, but the desired accuracy is often difficult to attain. Many plants use the system of weighing a known volume of the pulp on a scale. In many cases, this method is quite accurate, but obtaining a true sample presents quite a problem. This is especially true when the pulp tends to froth, the solids settle rapidly, or the flow is fast at the point of sampling. There is also the problem of the operator neglecting to take the sample because of duties elsewhere, or, if everything Is apparently running smoothly, he assumes the pulp density is also all right. In 1952, the Pine Creek plant of Union Carbide Nuclear Company began working on a better method for measuring and controlling pulp density. After an extensive investigation of different methods for measuring the specific gravity of moving pulps, the Research Department decided that the bubble tube method appeared to be the simplest and most promising for our applications. It consists of two bubble tubes, of different lengths, submersed in a pulp. Low pressure air is supplied to, the two tubes through sight bubblers to maintain approximately equal volume of air to each bubble tube. The bubble tubes are also connected to a differential manometer, one to each side. Therefore, knowing the vertical distance between the outlets of the bubble tubes, the manometere can be calibrated to measure directly the specific gravity of the pulp. (Figure No. 1 illustrates this model.)

In longwall top-coal caving (LTCC) mining with an inclined seam, the recovery rate is low and equipment stability is poor due to the unbalanced top-coal drawing process. To address these problems, this paper proposes the dynamic group caving method (DGCM), whose basic premise is that when the drawn volume of top coal from a support reaches about half, the next support begins drawing top coal, and the drawing process between the two supports is half done. Using particle flow code (PFC), the caving mechanism of top coal under DGCM was investigated. The results are of significance to realize high efficiency and precise caving in LTCC mining with an inclined seam.

The former mayor of Los Angeles, CA is a believer in public transportation but thinks neither his city nor the entire country is spending enough on basic infrastructure. In fact, the United States has fallen behind most other developed nations in improving public transportation, the former mayor said. Antonio R. Villaraigosa was the keynote speaker at the North American Tunneling (NAT) conference, held June 22-25 in Los Angeles, CA. The event, held every two years, is sponsored by the Underground Construction Association of SME (UCA). This years? conference attracted 1,091 underground construction professionals from around the world. The accompanying exhibition continues to grow, attracting 142 exhibiting companies occupying 162 booths. As always at NAT, registered attendees received the proceedings volume of the conference, which contains 132 papers. The proceedings volume, including a CD of the papers, is available from SME for $149 member, $139 student member and $189 nonmember. The ball mill grinding circuit has widespread application in mining, metallurgy, chemistry, pharmacy and research. It faces some challenges because a grinding circuit is a multivariable system in which high interaction between loops, variation of system parameters with time, and time delays are problems. In this study, a fuzzy logic self-tuning proportional–integral–derivative (FLST-PID) controller based on an improved disturbance observer is designed for control of ball mill grinding circuits. It is combined with an improved disturbance observer (IDOB) to eliminate system interaction, attenuate internal and external disturbances and compensate the effect of system uncertainty on the performance of the ball mill grinding circuit.

Centromin is a Mining Company owned by the peruvian government. It's considered as one of the major mining and metallurgical center in Latin America. The main operations of the Company are: Mining, Concentration, Smelting and Refining of several metals (Figure 1). At present, dentromin operates with six mining units: Cerro de Pasco, Morococha, Casapalca, San Cristobal, Yauricocha and Cobriza; which are located in the Central part of the country between 2 100 m and up to 4 800 m above sea level. The installed capacity of concentration all together ranges about 14 000 tons per day. There's also a metallurgical plant in La Oroya with a production capacity of 220 000 tons per year of refined metal. The production of the Company is diversified in twenty two (22) final pro- ducts, whose major productions are : copper, lead, zinc, silver, gold, tungg ten and bismuth. The minor products are: arsenic, antimony, cadmiun, teluriun, sulphuric acid, indium, selenium, etc.

"INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES Long rail tunnels require in most cases powerful mechanical ventilations. Besides requirements related to normal operation and maintenance, operational safety always requires a high level of smoke management. Identifying the optimum ventilation concept is essential for achieving proper performance and safety while keeping investment and operational cost at a reasonable level. For the purpose of the present paper, long tunnels have a length of typically 20 km or more. This is related to the European classification of trains (TSI 1303/2014), where the maximum distance from the portals to a firefighting point and between firefighting points is limited to 20 km (only category B passenger rolling stock allowed) or 5 km (general case). From TSI 1303/2014 it can be concluded, that tunnels over 20 km require in any case emergency stations with complex mechanical ventilations. Based on the experience arising from a number of recent projects in the European area, including in particular Gotthard (GBT), Lötschberg, Lyon-Tourin (LTF), Brenner (BBT) and Gibraltar, safety-relevant issues related to the ventilation of long railways tunnels are reviewed in this paper. Amberg Engineering is directly involved in these challenging design tasks and can provide first-hand experience and know-how. As a particular highlight, special attention is devoted to the longest tunnel worldwide, the 57 km long Gotthard Base Tunnel, which will be commissioned in 2016. THE GOTTHARD BASE TUNNEL Overview The Gotthard Base Tunnel will be commissioned in 2016 (official inauguration on the 1st of June and beginning of regular operation on the 11th of December) and will be the worldwide longest tunnel. Its complex and powerful ventilation system is very representative for many other long tunnels and is used as reference in this paper. Therefore, a few key characteristics of the Gotthard Base Tunnel and its ventilation system will be described in some detail in this initial chapter. The Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT) consists of two single-track tunnel tubes with connecting galleries every 312 meters. Two so-called multi-functional stations (MFS), located at roughly 1/3 and 2/3 of the tunnel length, host the key equipment for normal and for emergency operation. At these locations, double crossovers allow trains to switch from one tunnel tube to the other. An emergency station is located in each multifunctional station, allowing trains to stop in case of emergency. The general layout of the GBT is presented in Figure 1."

The literature on four different topics is re¬viewed herein for purposes of mathematical mod¬eling of mine water inflow. The first of the topics reviewed is modeling of fissured or fractured ma¬terials; the second is general Darcy based flow models; the third is field methods for determining fracture flow properties; and the fourth is methods used presently for determining mine water inflows. The four topics are considered in the foregoing order. FRACTURE FLOW MODEL Two basic types of fracture flow models have been developed. The first type uses various tech¬niques for space averaging to obtain the equations. Systems are considered in which the porous media properties vary smoothly enough and the fracturing is sufficiently profuse and well distributed that the locally averaged properties are meaningful when viewed on the macroscopic scale. The final result is that a coefficient is used which is similar to saturated hydraulic conductivity and in many cases, simply is hydraulic conductivity. In other cases, the coefficient is apparent hydraulic conductivity be¬cause the response from flow in the fractures is more rapid than flow in the pore spaces. Faust and Mercer (1980) refers to this method as the contin¬uum approach. Some of the papers on this type of problem are by Duguid (1973), Verner et al. (1974), Owili-Eger (1975), Duguid and Abel (1974), duPrey and Weill (1974), and O'Neill (1978). Duguid and Lee (1977) also considered heat flow in the fluid and the porous medium. These papers all result in various types of computer programs. Some papers on this topic that do not result in computer programs are by Snow (1968, 1969) and Streltsova (1976). Some of the foregoing articles consider con¬solidation of the porous media and the resulting effect on hydraulic conductivity. Barenblatt et al. (1960) developed an analytical solution for fracture flow and discussed the time that is involved in the drainage process and the effect that fracture flow has on the drainage time. The second type of fracture flow model con¬siders the width of the fractures as a function of the pressure in the field. Faust and Mercer (1980) refers to this method as the discontinuum approach. This approach often requires two finite element programs that consider the stress in the material and the flow in the fractures separately. The pro¬grams are then linked to arrive at the final solution. Some of the articles that consider the interrela¬tionship between pressure and the size of the frac¬ture but do not use computer solutions are Gringarten et al. (1975), Narasimhan and Palen (1979), and Witherspoon et al. (1979). Papers that use a linked computer program between stress and flow are by Ayatollahi (1978), Gale et al. (1974), and Noorishad et al. (1971). Ayatollahi's program is primarily for the petroleum industry because it does not consider the effect of gravity. Ayatollahi assumes that pressure effects are very large in com¬parison to gravity effects. This assumption would apply only to very deep aquifers. Articles that consider fracture flow on a more applied basis are by Wittke et al. (1972), who con¬siders that the flow is entirely through fissures and negligible through the pores of the rock. Gringarten and Witherspoon (1972) developed type curves that may be used for analysis of fracture flow systems; the curves are based on the assumption that it is possible to distinguish between aquifers with hor¬izontal and vertical fractures and that it is possible to analyze the system as an equivalent anisotropic homogeneous porous medium with a single fracture with much higher permeability. Historically, there have been many events of mine fires and explosions recorded in the United States and other countries that have demonstrated the existence of explosive methane-air mixtures, herein referred to as explosive gas zones (EGZs) [1]. The risk of mine explosions can increase if these EGZs migrate out from the gob into the surrounding mine entries — a phenomenon known as gob breathing. A number of 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations using various magnitudes and periods of barometric pressure variation have indicated that the EGZ outgassing potentially occurs due to lags in pressure, which are strongly influenced by mine conditions and ventilation systems. Early-warning systems with real-time pressure monitoring and the application of gob ventilation boreholes are recommended to detect and mitigate explosion hazards from gob outgassing.

Raise boring of mine ventilation shafts in many cases offers a lower cost and higher speed method of construction in comparison to conventional shaft sinking. Where underground access is available for raise boring the potential savings indicate that raise boring should be considered as an alternative to other methods. Raise boring machines are currently in use which have the capability for reaming shafts up to twenty feet in diameter, depending on the strata and depth. These large capacity machines make it possible to consider raise bored shafts for moving large volumes of air. Although we will consider here only ventilation shafts, raise boring should also be considered for men and material shafts. When the mine planner has determined the volume of air required through a shaft at a particular location he is faced with the problem of selecting the shaft size. The principal factors in optimizing the shaft size are the construction costs for the shaft 'and the power cost to move the air through the shaft. The larger diameter the' shaft is the more it costs to construct, but for a given volume of air the power required (cost) becomes lower as the diameter increases. The construction cost is paid only once, when the shaft is constructed. The power costs, however, are paid throughout the life of the shaft. Methods of optimizing air shaft size found in the literature (References 1 and 2) amortize the construction cost and include it in the average annual cost of operating the airshaft. These methods derive a formula for the average annual cost vs. shaft size and de-rive the formula to compute the optimum size for a given air flow rate. Chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) is the most refractory copper mineral when treated in conventional sulfate media leaching systems. This study is the first to examine the use of a dimethyl sulfoxide (CH3SOCH3), or DMSO, solution containing copper chloride (CuCl2) in the leaching of chalcopyrite. The DMSO solution containing CuCl2 could selectively dissolve the valuable metals of copper (Cu) and gold (Au) from chalcopyrite while leaving minerals with little economic value, such as pyrite (FeS2), and the penalty element arsenic (As) in the residues. Leaching chalcopyrite using a DMSO solution that contains CuCl2 offers a number of advantages, including eco-friendliness and easy operation.

Introduction Significant increases in extraction ratio on the order of 6% to 8%, equivalent to as much as 142 t/m (48 st per ft) of panel, have occurred at the Big Island trona mine during the last five years with the help of a practical rock mechanics program. This increase in resource recovery also has contributed to improvements in productivity. Both conventional and continuous machine mining have been used to mine two flat-lying trona beds at depths of 250 m and 260 m (820 ft and 853 ft) in the Green River Formation in southwestern Wyoming. Conventional room-and-pillarmining originally was conducted in panels with extractions of 5 8% to 60%. The use of yield pillars has allowed the panel extraction in increase to 66%. Continuous machine mining was introduced, with a 64% extraction ratio using long, narrow pillars and wide rooms. Further improvements in resource recovery seem feasible in light of present mining experience. The rock mechanics program consisted of field instrumentation to determine the pillar and roof response hole locations. to mining and computer modeling to evaluate the stability of various layouts, which were then adopted for mining. Mining background Stauffer Chemical Co.'s Big Island mine and refinery are located 40 km (25 miles) northwest of Green River, WY. Underground mining operations supply trona, a sodium mineral, to the refinery to produce soda ash. The room-and-pillar method is used to mine two 3 to 3.6 m (10 to 12 ft) thick, flat-laying seams at depths of about 250 to 260 m (820 to 850 ft). Mine production in 1986 was 2.3 Mt (2.5 million st). Microprocessor-based balances are helping Keffler & Rose Coal Preparation Co. to test and ship coal faster than the competition. They provide a high level of accuracy in meeting Environmental Protection Agency standards and customer specifications .and help minimize "bad" coal. The combination of speed and accuracy has helped increase K&R's sales, while improving the company's reputation for meeting precise client requirements. The quality of coal that is assured by the company's testing-at an in-house lab using fast, precision weighing, and a computerized sulfur test-has assured K&R of a good price for its products. Recent EPA standards have strained the testing capabilities of coal suppliers. Companies involved with high-sulfur coal often use outside laboratory services that can take three to four days to report test results. Since the coal business moves much faster these days, some coal companies cannot afford that kind of time. Too much coal not up to specifications could be produced within a three or four day period. Keffler & Rose took a novel approach to this problem, installing its own in-house laboratory. The test situation immediately improved with this step. However, one bottleneck persisted for a time: the weight measurement procedure for ash, moisture, and energy content. The company first employed a mechanical balance that required time for setting up and taring. The balance provided readings on a conventional scale that was not very precise and allowed for error through subjective readings by the operator. The balance bottleneck was broken when K&R applied new technology to meet its needs: microprocessor-based weighing. The result has been a 75% reduction in weighing time and a sharp increase in accuracy. This has contributed to the test speed needed to keep up with 227-t/h production and precise K&R coal specs.

It is commonly known in the industry that one of the key challenges for a greenfield project, such as Capstone Copper’s Santo Domingo project, is the obtention of samples for metallurgical testing and subsequent plant design. To face this challenge, the Santo Domingo project completed 169,692 meters of drilling. The material collected has been used for a variety of analysis including the economic recovery of iron, which contributes significant economic value to the Santo Domingo business case. Composite and variability samples, covering the main geological units considered in the life of mine (LOM) plan, were selected for bench and pilot scale testwork. Davis Tube Tests, small scale Low Intensity Magnetic Separation (LIMS) tests and a pilot utilizing a 48 in (1.2 m), diameter magnetic separation drum were completed. The testwork demonstrated that the Santo Domingo ore could achieve iron concentrate grades of 65% Fe - suitable for blast furnace, and 67% Fe - suitable for Direct Reduction, primarily by concentration of magnetite. The outcomes of this work have informed the iron concentrator plant design and scale up.

INTRODUCTION The work described here refers to the Genesee River Interceptor Southeast Project. This project is a part of the Combined Sewer Overflow Abatement Program, Phase I, for the Rochester Pure Water District, Rochester, New York. Our contract required the design of a 13,200-feet long main tunnel, 14 feet finished diameter, approximately 100-120 Feet below ground; drop shafts and diversion tunnels to deliver surface flow to the main tunnel; a gate chamber whereby the main tunnel is dropped 35 feet, and provision made for connection to the future tunnel in Phase II, as well as a host of other surface structures. Cross sectional dimensions for the structures involved varied from 16 feet circular to a 20'x50' horseshoe, in a competent rock formation consisting of Lockport Dolomite and Rochester Shale. In the construction of a rock tunnel, the problems of the tunnel designers are as follows: 1. To evaluate stresses in the rock as a result of excavation. 2. Design a temporary support system to prevent any rock failure during the period of construction. Design of this temporary support system is empirical. Design loads given by empirical relations are dependent upon the rock quality and size of opening. Temporary support system may either be steel frames closely spaced along the length of tunnel and tied together, in the case of poor rock, or, an even spacing of rock bolts in the case of competent rock. 3. Design a final lining for the service loads. Service loads, in our case of a water-carrying tunnel, are hydrostatic pressure due to ground water, deadweight of lining) pressure of contained water and time dependent rock loading. The constitutive properties of the rock are extremely complex because of discontinuities, pre-existing stresses due to overburden, material symmetries and changes of initial state associated with the process of excavation. The changes of initial state may be changes of stress fields along with the consequent yield of the material or the extension of existing discontinuities.
