The processing of residues derived from various operations in the mining and metallurgical industry for by-product recovery is becoming more prevalent. A principal target for by-product recovery is flue dust produced by conventional smelting operations. Flue dust from zinc smelters has been processed for many years for the recovery of cadmium (1,2). The cadmium recovery technique which consists of a selective sulfation roast, followed by a water leach and zinc dust cementation, produces a lead cake residue (see chemical analysis in Table I), which consists primarily of lead sulfate.

Coal produced from surface mines in the Western United States is becoming a more important part of this nation's economy as other types of fuels become scarce. This paper reports the investigation of alternative methods of handling the parting between two coal seams. The results of this investigation are presented as the engineering-economic aspects of alternative parting handling methods involving stowing or back filling techniques. The coal and parting characteristics were selected as being representative of those under consideration or actively mined in the West. The basic philosophy of evaluation is to establish a mine-within-a-mine where equipment selected for minimal capital investment can remove the parting and second seam nearly independent of the ongoing, present production. With proper consideration of design, this parting-coal removal is evaluated as a second operation within the first and has its own profitability measure. The Fort Union Area of Montana, Wyoming, and the Dakotas contains large reserves of low sulfur sub-bituminous coal. In many locations, several coal seams are close to the surface and are separated by relatively thin layers of parting. The removal of overburden and the mining of the upper seam is accomplished effectively with conventional mining methods and equipment. Mining a second seam of coal and handling the parting in accord with economic and environmental controls presents a number of problems. Typically, mining companies have adapted the conventional strip mining techniques used in the East. However, the extreme thickness of the western coal seams offers alternative mining method possibilities for parting and second seam removal.

The results of laboratory and pilot plant testing of a newly developed process to dewater waste slurries from different industries are presented. Data indicate that an increase in solid contents from 6% to over 30% can be obtained in few minutes retention time in comparison to several years as required by currently used technologies. The economical as well as the environmental impacts of such process are discussed.

There exists a wide array of industrial byproducts that produce beneficial responses in the soil/ plant environment. These materials range from clean-coal-technology residues produced during the generation of electric power (particularly those high in gypsum) to mineral fines produced by the aggregates industry (i.e., sand, gravel and crushed stone). A number of these materials are examined in relation to potential nutritional interactions in soils and crops with emphasis on trace elements. The significance of utilizing these materials in agriculture as a component of sustainable agricultural systems are discussed.

Introduction Placer deposits account for one-half to two-thirds of the total gold produced worldwide. As many as 311 t (10 million oz) have been produced from some major districts. Several others are credited with 155 t (5 million oz). All the major districts and many lesser ones have similar characteristics. Consideration of these characteristics offers insight into the origin of gold in the deposit. Knowing the gold deposit's geologic history leads to useful conclusions in exploring for placer deposits and for deposits in consolidated areas. Placer Deposit Characteristics Table 1 lists 17 placer gold districts around the world and their characteristics. These include type and age of, mineralized source rocks, associated intrusive rocks, and age of intermediate sedimentary cycles. Although quartzite or sandstone occurs in the bedrock sequence in four of the 17 districts, slates, phyllites, or schists are present in all of the districts. Additionally, in all but three, the slates are pre-Mesozoic. And, in six of the remaining 14, the slates are Precambrian. Rocks intrusive into the slates are all of intermediate to acidic composition and are emplaced as stocks, dikes, or sills, rather than being batholithic in proportions. Intermediate interceptors have not been recognized in only three of the 17 districts. Data from China and Mongolia are inconclusive as to this characteristic. Black Shale Gold Higher than average gold values are found in modern sedimentary rocks in coarse granulites, conglomerates, sandstones, and gray-wackes. Not so predictably, higher than average gold values also occur in black shales and carbonaceous argillities. Li and Shokena (1974) found that, in the Proterozoic sedimentary and equivalent metamorphic rocks of the Enisei Ridge, carbonaceous and graphitic phyllites and schists were particularly enriched in gold. Korotayeva and Polikarpochkin (1969) reported gold content in organic rocks to be enriched up to 15 times more than the organic free shales and siltstones of the Nerchinsk Zavod region of eastern Transbaikal. Black shales can be gold interceptors as are rocks of the granulite facies. Gold occurs in shales in particulate, free form, in pyrite, adsorbed on clays, and precipitated on carbon. In copper-bearing shales of Poland's Fore-Sudetic monocline, Kucha (1973) reported gold present in organic compounds as well as in silver bearing minerals. Anoshin (1969) found a strong correlation between gold and the pelitic fraction of sediments in certain rocks of the Atlantic Ocean basin. Heavy metal absorption on clays results in agglomeration to the extent that the particles settle with the heavy mineral fraction in enriched strata. Piper and Graef (1974) think that gold in sediments on the flank of the East Pacific rise is of lithogenic origin. Crockett (1973), however, proposed a volcanogenic exhalative origin. A strong correlation between gold and volcanic activity exists in rocks of the Canadian Shield where tuffaceous sediments and porphyries are more frequently enriched in gold than rocks with no volcanic components. Volcanic rocks of intermediate to acidic composition are considered here to be the primary source of gold in black shales. Gold is concentrated in shales as detrital free grains with diameters less than 50 µm (270 mesh), as precipitates, and in pyrite or other sulfide minerals. This is the first step in the history of gold placer deposits. Grain Size Modification Gold, as free grains with diameters less than 50 µm (270 mesh), is too light to be concentrated hydraulically into placer deposits. Some process has increased the average size of the gold grains. Mobilization during regional metamorphism converts most of the gold into particulate grains or entrains it in microfractures in the sulfide minerals. With moderate folding, small, white, vitreous quartz veins develop. As deformation continues, larger, more conspicuous quartz veins are formed. Two hundred and thirty million tons of coal! That is what the Burlington Northern (BN) railroad anticipates that it and the Chicago North Western railroad (CNW) will haul out of the southern Powder River Basin l (see map on page 966) in 1994. Put that 209 Mt (230 million st) into railroad perspective. Current average train size is 113 cars. With each car transporting 94 t (103.5 st) of coal, each train averages 10.6 kt (11,700 st) of coal. Simple division shows that 209 Mt (230 million st) of coal equals 19,658 trains a year. So BN and the CNW must move 54 loads a day out of the Basin. Every load, of course, has an empty side of its cycle. This means that 54 loads a day translates into 108 total trains a day, or 39,420 trains a year through the southern PRB.

This paper describes the development of a novel selective flocculation technique for recovering phosphate values from ores containing silicate or carbonate gangue minerals. Data from initial flocculation response and reagent adsorption studies on component mineral suspensions and synthetic mixtures were used to assess the influence of various process parameters (e.g., reagent dosages, particle size, solids concentration, and conditioning regimes) on single-stage selective flocculation tests involving natural silicate and carbonate ores. In these tests a high degree of selectivity was achieved using low dosages of a low-molecular-weight cationic dispersant and a mid-range molecular weight cationic flocculant. Testwork was then extended to the evaluation of several floc recovery systems (sedimentation, hydrocyclones, and floc flotation) in a multi-stage process involving redispersion and reflocculation. Results from these tests clearly demonstrated the feasibility of producing marketable phosphate concentrates from both ore types.

Despite its great potential utility, ion exchange has only achieved limited application in hydrometallurgy. To a significant extent this is due to the limitations of conventional ion exchange process design as well as the properties of the ion exchange resins themselves. Over the past decade several new ion exchange resins have been introduced with properties that make them potentially very useful for various hydrometallurgical separations. In addition, a novel ion exchange process called Reciprocating Flow Ion Exchange or Recoflo, which has been employed in the metal finishing industry for the last dozen or so years for chemical recovery and effluent treatment, has been shown to offer a number of unique and significant advantages over conventional I.X. technology.

The authors discuss the cooperative efforts by Minnesota Ore. Operations and Research; from the earlier development, testing and installation of fine shear screens in the Minntac Step III concentrator to the most recent testing and operating data that has resulted in the installation of Derrick Multifeed sandwich deck screens in Minntac Steps I and II. Pilot-plant test results that were obtained at the Coleraine, Minnesota Research Laboratory are also reported and demonstrate the effects of feed rate and feed percent solids on sandwich screen performance with two sizes of Minntac fine screen feed.

The productivity and fuel efficiency of iron-ore blast furnace operations has greatly increased in recent times. These improvements, particularly to the Japanese steel industry, have primarily arisen from process engineering studies of the blast furnace and associated operations such as sintering. The development of fluxed sinter based on iron-ore fines reacted to produce highly reducible, low slag sinters has contributed further to a reduction in fuel requirements. The Pilbara province of Western Australia is a significant source of these iron-ore fines supplied to the international market. Increasingly, this market is being offered high quality ores from other foreign sources. To technically assist companies in improving the processing efficiency of ores, and to improve the technical marketing of ores by modelling the processing characteristics of Australian/international ore blends, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) is actively assisting the industry by researching the general theme of 'iron ore from mine to metal in this paper we outline progress towards a numerical description of: a. ore deposit classification. b. Degradation during transport. c. Direct reduction of iron ore. d. Liquid bath ore reduction/smelting. e. Industrial sintering.

Copper has been mined in the Philippines since at least as early as the Ming dynasty (1368 A.D. to 1644 A. D.). The principal source areas of this early production were in Camarines Norte (Paracale), in the Mountain Province, which now boasts the largest number of Philippine porphyry copper deposits, in Masbate and in Surigao, The Spanish Era began in 1521. Although they were primarily interested in gold, the Spaniards operated several copper mines including the San Remigio mine on Panay and the Lepanto mine in northern Luzon, beginning in 1842 and 1865 respectively. Prior to World War II most of the Philippine copper production was supplied by these same two mines together with the Hixbar mine, Rapu Rapu Island which began operation in 1939. The Hixbar and San Remigio mines are cupriferous pyrite deposits and the Lepanto is a vein-¬form replacement deposit (Kinkel et al. ,I 1956). No significant copper production was derived from porphyry copper occurrences prior to world War II.

This paper is not written to "break new ground" in computer applications; it is just a treatment of how an operating metal mine utilizes a mainframe computer for planning, analyzing, and reporting on the ventilation and cooling systems. The Unisys mainframe computer at the mine site is used in programs that analyze the ventilation network, keep records on various ventilation installations, calculate the results of measurements and produce reports on ventilation conditions in the working places and on the main air distribution, and plan and analyze the cooling system. All the programs are interactive to terminals. There are a series of data files that are generated by some programs which may be used by other programs. Most of these programs have been developed in-house. The computer is also used as a word processor via a vendor-supplied text editing program to produce memos, letters, and to keep up-to-date lists of equipment used.

Contrary to active subsidence, which occurs concurrently with mining operations, or is completed within a few days following coal extraction, delayed subsidence may take many years to appear at the surface after coal mines are abandoned. There are two principal morphological types of delayed subsidence: troughs, which are shallow depressions, and sinks, which are steep-sided crown pits. Both types are damaging to surface structures, and a variety of methods have been introduced to deal with the problem, ranging from subsidence insurance to site restitution. In planning insurance or restitution measures, a predictive model is of value in estimating the magnitude of the problem and the size of long-term budgetary commitments. Only one model is known, which was developed for the Bureau of Mines by GAI Consultants of Monroeville (l,2,3). The GAI model is presented in qualitative terms. This report develops a formal basis for the model and tests a numerical implementation on one of the best-described study areas, Allleqheny County in Pennsylvania.

Zoning and environmental restrictions on land usage now make open- pit quarrying more and more difficult, especially near urban areas. One option for quarry operators is to go underground for mineral production. While underground-mining costs are higher than those for open-cut work, there are several compensating advantages. In many cases it is possible to produce the same material underground without affecting land values, and the surface is preserved for industrial, residential, or agricultural purposes. Proper planning can yield underground sites which have great potential value for industrial plants, warehouses, or other business uses. It is essential to plan underground mineral extraction using a three-dimensional modular-room architectural concept to fully exploit secondary space utilization. Prior to the start of underground mining an operator must make a careful geological engineering study to deter- mine the suitability of the deposit and must prepare a plan for safe and economical mining for the purpose of converting to secondary usage.

Climax Molybdenum Company, a Division of American Metals Climax, Inc., operated a hydrometallurgical plant* at Climax, Colorado from August 1966 through August 1968 to recover molybdenum from a mixed oxide and sulfide ore. The ore treated for this addition to the existing plant contained sufficient Molybdenite values to be mined for Molybdenite recovery alone, so that the oxidized molybdenum recovery could be regarded as a byproduct operation. Climax is located at an elevation of 11,300 feet. All process equipment, except thickeners, was enclosed in buildings. Annual snowfall is approximately 250 inches per year. Paved highways and rail service to the plant are maintained and kept open all year. Most of the employees live in the town of Leadville, which is approximately twelve miles from the plant site. The sulfide flotation plant handles 40,000 to 45,000 tons per day of ore. The mine is one of the world's largest underground mines.

Kaiser Resources Ltd. operates a coal mining complex in Southeastern British Columbia. A large surface mine, a conventional underground mine, and an innovative hydraulic underground mine are presently in operation. The products of these mines are fed to the Elkview plant. This coal has to be prepared to 9. 5% ash and 6'o total moisture for export from the port of Roberts Bank near Vancouver, British Columbia to Japan at a rate of 4. 5 Mltpy. The moisture requirement for the coal product was recently increased to 8. 0% total moisture. The entire operation has been described in various publications (1), (2), (3). Details of the venture will not be repeated in this paper. In this paper we hope to describe the modifications made to the original coal preparation plant in order to satisfy market requirements for quality and quantity of coal.

"Mine monitoring through various sensors is a vital component of successful miner safety and health programs. Data from environmental, geotechnical, infrastructure and other types of sensors are increasingly used to discover and mitigate health and safety concerns in underground mines. In many smaller underground mines, as well as in the new development headings of larger underground mines, leaky feeder communication systems may be the only available means to transport crucial monitoring data. In addition, data transport is increasingly being delivered using Internet Protocol (IP), while older forms of serial communication are being retired. This paper presents the selection, configuration and testing methodologies employed by researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to integrate commercially available land mobile data radios into an existing leaky feeder communication system to provide IP data transport.IntroductionTo enhance the health and safety of their mining workforce, mine owners and operators are increasingly installing environmental monitoring and control systems in underground mines. Real-time, mine-wide monitoring is becoming a reality with the implementation of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) into the underground mining industry (Zhou et al., 2017). However, not all underground mines, especially smaller mines and new development headings in larger mines, have the information technology infrastructure in place to handle the data transport requirements for the newer Internet Protocol (IP)-based technologies that are part of IIoT.This was the case with a mine in the Western United States. It lacked the infrastructure to perform critical monitoring in remote headings. Therefore, the mine partnered with the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) to develop and evaluate a cost-effective solution for the real-time monitoring of geotechnical conditions in relatively remote sections of the mine. This paper describes SMRD’s solution to leverage the mine’s existing leaky feeder communications system to achieve IP data transport using commercially available land mobile data radios (NIOSH, 2013; Forooshani et al., 2013; Novak, Snyder and Kohler, 2010; Yarkan et al., 2009). The solution, fully evaluated in laboratory and mine environments, requires no modifications to the existing system, is economical, simple to implement, and reliable. It also allows for transition to higher-bandwidth IT networks, such as fiber optic or WiFi, should they become available."

The IPS process, developed by Baxter and McAuley, was first applied in Australia in 1984 at Browns Creek in NSW where a small 300kg batch plant was in operation for a number of years. To date a further 14 plants have been installed. While a number of engineering companies have engineered applications of the technology, a majority of the plants constructed to date have been constructed by Como Engineers who have a reference list of 9 installations with batch capacities up to 3.0 t.

This paper addresses two issues affecting the international ferrochromium market as they pertain to the changing pattern of U. S. chromium import dependency. These issues are 1) the long-term ferrochromium production cost differential between the United States and the Republic of South Africa and 2) the ability of Zimbabwe to expand ferrochromium production and exportation. This paper draws upon the data and analyses of a recent Bureau of Mines Minerals availability Program appraisal that evaluated the international availability of chromium in the form of chromite and ferrochromium from 10 market economy countries. South African ferrochromium producers are shown to have a long-term production cost advantage over U.S. producers of $0.03 to $0.04 per pound of contained chromium, in 1981 dollars. Zimbabwean ferrochromium production and exportation are expected to increase in the future. Major expansions of production capacity will be dependent upon alleviating potentially serious constraints in electric power, rail, and port facilities. In the long term, ferrochromium production costs in Zimbabwe are expected to increase faster than the rate of inflation, because as chromite mining from the podiform resources in Zimbabwe decreases, production from the Great Dyke resources will increase.
