The paper describes the arrangements for the casting, curing and handling at the casting yard, of the concrete segments for the lining of the UK half of the tunnel, and the plant used for the handling of these linings at the construction site. An outline of the tunnel boring machines being used is given, with particular reference to lining handling and erection, and the extensive muck disposal systems installed. A general progress update will be given to the conference.

DOUG HALBE: Thanks, Terry. And in spite of your introductory comments, I'm going to attempt to continue our hallowed tradition of saying nice things about the speakers. This is really a serious comment now. We, as mineral processing and mill people, don't often talk to people outside our general operating area. One thing that we've tried to do in this operators' symposium is get speakers from various types of plant operations to help illustrate all the things we have in common. Our next speaker is from the industrial minerals area. I think there's a lot to be learned from industrial minerals operations. Some of the people in the last session learned some things about fine grinding in industrial mineral operations. I was a little surprised to see people there grind to 2 microns. Our next speaker is Frank Alsobrook. Frank is another nonmetallurgical engineer. He has a degree in geology, a master's of science from the University of Wisconsin. He's had his own very successful consulting company for a number of years. This is your 11th anniversary, Frank? Very good. He's also the immediate past chair of the industrial minerals division. I think the folks at the speakers' table should be ashamed. You have been so rowdy that Frank chose to sit in the audience. [laughter] We'd like you to come up now, Frank, and tell us some things that you've seen that might be useful to us. INTRODUCTION FRANK ALSOBROOK: The three topics addressed briefly are (1) teamwork and operations modeling, (2) the pitfalls of capital conservatism, and (3) the potential for by-product recovery. Ideas for improvements in these areas are not unique to industrial minerals but apply to metal mining and processing operations, as well. Several additional topics are suggested at the end of the paper.

The failure of coal ribs is a major hazard in underground coal mines. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have been working on the development of an engineering-based rib control method. A user-friendly standalone application, called Design of Rib Support (DORS), is being developed to ease the calculations of rib support. DORS can estimate the Primary Rib Support Density (PRSD, ton/ft2) for development loading. However, it still needs to take account of another key factor, bolt length, in rib support design. The bolt length can be estimated from the rib fracture depth, and this study focuses on the coal rib fracture depth analysis with numerical modeling and artificial neural network. A total of 331 FLAC3D simulations with different mining scenarios and rib conditions were conducted for this study. Machine learning was then used to predict coal rib fracture depth under different conditions. Based on the numerical simulations, the parameters for mining scenarios and rib conditions were collected as features for machine learning, and coal rib fracture depths were collected as the target to predict. Good data correlation (r-square) was obtained with the use of an artificial neural network. The

"Separation of different calcium minerals have long been an interesting and challenging problem. In this investigation calcium mineral separation is examined by: microflotation, zeta potential measurement and adsorption, using novel collectors having two functional groups instead of one. In theory, by varying the distance between the functional groups, it could be possible to preferentially target one calcium mineral by matching the spatial distance between the sites on the mineral surface. In this investigation two new surfactants have been tested to estimate their ability to float apatite and/or calcite. Preliminary findings show that an increase in distance between the functional groups favors one mineral over the other, and this might be due to differences in the mineral surface structure. INTRODUCTION Apatite is a strategically important mineral which has both great value for industrial use as a precursor to phosphoric acid; and in the agricultural industry as an important source of phosphorous in fertilizers. This has led both the European Union and the United States to recognize it as an important resource for the future. Currently there is no lack of apatite in the world, but it is important to develop the beneficiation to ensure future supply. A common problem in apatite flotation is the selectivity towards calcite, which it is commonly associated with. Although calcite is an important industrial mineral its abundance makes it not usually worth to extract from apatite ores unless it is easy to separate1,2. Both apatite and calcite are semi soluble minerals with calcium as one of their constituents. The most common way to separate apatite and calcite is to use flotation. A process that involves making the mineral particles to extract from the system hydrophobic by adsorbing a collector on the mineral surface. One way to study collector adsorption on a mineral surface is by zeta potential measurements. The zeta potential is the charge at a slip plane a short distance from the surface. By measuring the zeta potential with and without the presence of collector it is possible to investigate if the collector is present at the surface or not, a change is indicative of collector adsorption. The zeta potential of fluorite, apatite and calcite without collector can be seen in Figure 1. The small difference in zeta potential between apatite and calcite shows the similarity in their surface properties and gives an indication of their separation difficulty. One additional problem with semi soluble minerals is their tendency to slightly dissolve in the pulp and thereby change the ionic composition of the solution. This makes separation and research problematic as the freed ions may readsorb on the mineral surface and interfere with the collector adsorption on the mineral surfaces3–5."

"Increasing worldwide energy demands, coupled with desires for cleaner energy, have led to greater research of renewable energies. Strongly weather-dependent energy sources, e.g. solar and wind energy, are unable to provide a constant control energy to withstand the fluctuation of the extensive power systems during peak hours. The pump storage plant Nant de Drance in Switzerland will not only have the capacity of a nuclear power plant, producing 900 MW, but will also combine the environmental aspect and the demand for controlled energy. Nant de Drance is one of the pioneer projects for upcoming energy challenges and serves as a model for future pump storage plants. This paper focuses on the planning process and the project execution of interdisciplinary large-scale projects such as Nant de Drance, including project related data handling, communication systems and project handling skills. Furthermore, the paper discusses mining excavation in the context of large scale projects and their regional environmental challenges, e.g. high alpine rock mass on the site of Nant de Drance. PROJECT BACKGROUND Project Overview Nant de Drance is a 900 MW pump storage plant located in the Swiss Alps. To provide such a high energy storage, six turbines (reversible Francis type), each with a capacity of 150 MW, were installed. Due to the efficiency factor of 80% the pump storage plant is able to provide an energy production of 2500 GWh per annum. Construction of the pump storage plant, which has been selected as “Major Tunneling Project of the Year” in 2014 by NCE and ITA-AITES, will be completed over 10 years. Therefore, the project has been divided in six major phases outlined below: - Launch: 2008 - Access Gallery: 2010 – 2012 - Excavation KMA, KTR: 2011 – 2014 - Concreting KMA, KTR: 2014 – 2016 - Installation of HEM equipment: 2014 – 2018 - Tests & entry into service: 2017 – 2018 Figure 1 outlines the single process phases of the project. For the construction of the shafts, galleries and caverns, 1.7 million m³ of metamorphic rock with sedimentary origin (mica schist & paragneiss of the massif „Aiguilles Rouges“) were excavated. A tunnel network with a total length of 15 km was created. The machine cavern measures 194 m long, 32 m wide and 52 m tall."

The first, published in June, outlined some site criteria that influence tailings disposal and some of the design options available to meet these criteria. The following article explores in more detail important design criteria for tailings dams and provides several case study illustrations.

In addition, the trend towards digitalization does not stop at the tunnel portal. A shortage of skilled personnel and the ever-present wish to increase workplace safety, quality and system performance automation, operatorassist or even autonomous systems have become key development targets. The paper will present the current state of the art in light of these special conditions.

Analytical costs are a major part of exploration programs in developing nations which may lack adequate laboratories. Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), a variant of atomic emission spectroscopy, can reduce exploration analytical costs and can provide the analytical results in <1 minute. CPI is now marketing battery-powered, backpack mounted analyzers, using LIBS to analyze for many elements of interest to the explorationist. LIBS is well suited to the analysis of elements in industrial minerals. Limits of detection in ppm for some of these are: Li-1, Be-2, Na-100, B-33, Sr-10, Ba-300, Cs-1, K-500, Fe-500, Mg-500, and Ti-500.

A multielement extraction system is being used successfully to provide essentially interference-free geochemical analyses to aid in gold exploration. The Methyl isobutyl ketone-Amine synerGistic Iodide Complex (MAGIC) extraction system separates Ag, As, Au, Bi, Cd, Cu, Ga, Hg, In, Mo, Pb, Pd, Pt, Sb, Se, Sn, Te, T1, and Zn from interfering geological matrices. Quantitative extraction of these elements is accomplished over a broad range of acid normality, making it possible to economically determine all 19 elements from a single digestion or leach solution. The resulting organic extracts are amenable to analysis by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) and flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS). For many years the principal shortcoming of ICP-AES was the complex spectral and stray-light interferences that were caused by the extreme variability of components such as Fe. Na, and Ca in common geological matrices. The MAGIC extraction allows determination of the extracted elements with enhanced sensitivity, from a virtually uniform matrix, by ICP-AES and FAAS. Because of its simultaneous multichannel capabilities, ICP-AES is the ideal instrumental technique for determining these 19 extracted elements. Ultratrace (sub-part-per-billion) determinations of Au and many of the other extracted elements can be made by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy (GFAAS), following back stripping of the extracts. The combination of the extraction followed by stripping of the organic phase eliminates 99.999% of potential interferences for Au. Gold determination by GFAAS from these extracts under the specified conditions yields a fourfold improvement in sensitivity over conventional GFAAS methods. This sensitivity enhancement and the interference-free matrix allow highly reliable determinations well into the parts-per-trillion range.

In April 1988, the joint venture of Morrison-Knudsen and Paschen Contractors (M-K/P) was the successful low bidder for the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago&apos;s (MWRD) Contract Number 73-164-2H. This project is yet another in the MWRD Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) devised to control and treat overflows from combined sanitary and stormwater flows. M-K/P&apos;s project, located along the Des Plaines River, consists of 21,569&apos; of tunnel mined to a 35&apos; diameter and two tunnels totaling 14,529&apos; mined to a 12&apos; diameter. All three tunnels will have 12" thick reinforced concrete lining. The path for combined sewer/storm waters to reach the tunnels begins at a connection structure, continues through an approach sewer, a sluice gate structure and down a vertical shaft which is topped by a backflow structure. The purpose of the backflow structure is to prevent water surging to the surface as the system fills rapidly. Backflow preventors represent a change in design after problems developed on earlier constructed portions of the T.A.R.P.. On this project, 14 drop shafts channel flows to the tunnel system. In addition to the drop shafts, contract specifications require an emergency or escape shaft be located not more than 4000 feet from the tunnel headings. Due to long reaches without drop shafts, four access shafts had to be constructed. Thus, the total shafts constructed under this contract will be eighteen plus one 30&apos; finished diameter construction shaft located within Miller&apos;s Meadows. Figure 1 shows the overall Des Plaines River System and the M-K/P contract connection to previous and future MWRD projects.

Current mine development requires the safe, &apos;expedient, economical construction of vertical shafts for ventilation and access in diverse ground conditions. Advancements in large diameter shaft drilling have lead to exceptional mechanical refinements of shaft drilling technology. The author traces the history of the equipment and methods employed by the large diameter shaft drilling industry and explores likely paths of future development. A few case histories are cited to illustrate the adaptability of shaft drilling as a versatile tool for advanced worldwide mining operations. Safety, schedules, cost, environmental impact, and capability are discussed to assist the mining engineer in the investigation of feasible projects.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines inventoried and characterized mineral sites and production plants within 200 km of the border in both the U.S. and Mexico. Sources of information included the USBM Minerals Availability System, the USBM Automated Mineral Information System, the USGS Mineral Resources Data System, the Mine Safety and Health Administration Address/Employment File, and the literature. Three hundred seventy-eight major construction material and industrial mineral properties were identified and characterized in the U.S. and Mexican parts of the Borderlands. Sixty-six major metallic mineral properties were identified and characterized in the Mexican part of the Borderlands.

In 2015, the Subtropolis Mine in Petersburg, OH, experienced a massive ground collapse that continues to grow over time. Horizontal stress effects have affected the roof at this operation in the past and may have played a large role in this collapse. Horizontal stress can impact the roof and floor stability and endanger the health and safety of underground stone miners. Mines experiencing damaging effects from horizontal stress typically find that the principal stress direction is the same throughout the mine and the region. At the Subtropolis Mine the principal horizontal stress direction appears to change as conditions change and differs from the regional horizontal stress, particularly near the collapse or other roof fall areas. The growth over time of this collapse and other roof falls have been captured and analyzed using geologic mapping, 3D LiDAR scanning, numerical modeling and geographic information systems like ArcGIS. Utilizing these tools to better understand sitespecific conditions can be critical to reducing the potential of massive ground collapses in the underground limestone industry.

Concentrations of minerals between 3.5 and 5 specific gravity such as ilmenite, rutile and zircon in large accumulations of sand constitute "heavy mineral" placers. Two fundamentally different modes of formation characterize "trap" and "bed" placer variants. Smaller and generally higher grade trap placers form during sediment erosion or reworking. Because of their smaller size, they rarely yield economic heavy mineral deposits. They become economic, either if they contain more valuable "heavies" such as gold, or, if they occur within or near much larger but lower grade bed placers. Bed placers form during sediment accumulation episodes in any environment and lithofacies where mineral supply and fluid dynamics are favorable. Three heavy mineral deposits are discussed to illustrate bed placer geology and how trap placers occur with and relate to them.

This paper discusses the results of a laboratory investigation carried out to study the microscale flow characteristics of copper ores and the variation in flow behavior resulting from flow of leach solution. Fractures in 1.5 and 4 inch diameter cores were mapped by visual inspection. The cores were stressed in a triaxial stress field representative of in situ conditions. The permeability of the samples to water was then estimated. The samples were exposed to 20 g/l sulfuric acid and the experiment repeated. The Permeability of unleached samples ranges from 10-1 to 10-19 m2 and it increases as leaching progresses. The porosity variation and the rate of recovery of copper from the specimen during leaching were also studied.

At 6,898 ft below surface, the historic No. 9 shaft at Resolution Copper near Superior, AZ is now the second deepest single lift mine shaft in the United States and connects to the deepest single lift mine shaft in the U.S., Resolution Copper’s No. 10 Shaft (6,989 feet). The shafts serve as ventilation and access for future underground development of what could one day become one of the most significant copper mines in the United States. It is from the base of No. 9 and No. 10 shafts that hundreds of employees of Resolution Copper, a joint venture of Rio Tinto and BHP, hope will soon be given the go ahead to begin driving lateral tunnels to reach a copper deposit that is estimated to contain 28 Mt or 40 billion pounds of copper. Copper was recently added to the U.S. Geological Survey’s (UGGS) critical minerals list, in large part because of increasing demand. A study by S&P Global Energy & Market Intelligence “Copper in the age of AI: Challenges of electrification” released on Jan. 8, 2025, “identifies a transformative trajectory for copper demand, projecting a surge from 28 Mt (31 million st) in 2025 to 42 Mt (46.3 million st) by 2040 – a 50 percent increase that underscores the metal's pivotal role in multiple technological and economic domains.” The surge in demand is driven in large part by the global energy transition, electrification of vehicles, growth of artificial intelligence and data centers, and most recently robotics. Meanwhile, geopolitical tensions have increased the focus on the need for the United States to secure more of its own mineral supply chain. S&P Global’s report is one of many warnings that while copper demand has accelerated rapidly, future supply is being held back. Resolution Copper stands out as one example of a known mineral deposit remaining locked in the United States’ complex and lengthy permitting slog.

INTRODUCTION For any identified mineral resource to qualify as a minable reserve, it must contain legally and economically extractable mineral at the time of determination. As competition for land has increased, the legal complexities have more than kept pace, frequently becoming the most important determinant in mineral exploration and development projects. Rarely will developers of a project avoid having to obtain numerous federal, state, and/or local permits while acquiring the necessary legal permission to begin mining. Each site must be selected carefully, not only for economic feasibility, but also for legal feasibility. Although it is impossible to present site-specific solutions for all potential underground developments, certain generalizations may be applied to specific land categories, particularly federally owned land. Such federally owned land includes more than 33% of the land area of the United States and many of the areas potentially attractive for future development. State and local restrictions affect a large portion of the nonfederal land, and those restrictions are equally important even though their diversity and current status require more regional study than can be provided herein (the list of references include sources of additional information). Each potential mining site requires a title search of the land status to determine the land ownership and the conditions affecting development. In addition, appropriate data concerning the mineralogic and economic potentials of an area must be collected. As listed in Table 1, many sources of public information are avail- able to aid potential developers. Fig. 1 illustrates a typical federal master title plat. HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE The settlement of the United States reflects a fascinating history of public-land laws and subsequent mineral-disposal laws. Most of the statutes of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries sought to dispose of land for the purpose of generating revenue to the federal government. The underlying need for general revenue contributed directly to numerous and often conflicting land policies. More recently, diverse federal programs such as environmental legislation have transcended the need for revenue in forming the framework that determines who has power over mineral developments and where those developments can take place. In 1812, the General Land Office was established under the Treasury Dept. At that time, English common law prevailed, entitling the owner of the surface to whatever was contained within the surface boundaries from the surface to the center of the earth. Unless a distinct title separated the mineral estate, it was included in the surface-land ownership. However, gold and silver were the property of the crown and were controlled by sovereign prerogative. Early state legislation on the subject of mines and minerals may be classified as legislation providing for the sale of state lands with a reservation of the minerals and legislation recognizing or asserting the sovereign prerogative for precious metals. In 1781, a Pennsylvania statute reserved 20% of all gold and silver ore for the use of the commonwealth. Thomas Jefferson suggested that a portion of all gold and silver be retained by the federal government. These early rules affecting land in the eastern states, now privately held, have been re- pealed, declared obsolete, or largely ignored. Federal legislation prior to 1848 and affecting mining may be classified as legislation reserving the minerals to the United States and legislation authorizing the disposition of reserved minerals by sale, lease, or grant. With many modifications, these basic policies remain in effect at the present time. A 1796 act provided for the sale of the Northwest Territory and for the establishment of the present system of rectangular survey for public lands. The Lake Superior copper region was the scene of "wild and baseless excitement in 1837" when the attorney general concluded that the president had the power to lease lands in Wisconsin; this opinion soon was overturned by another attorney general. By 1846, Congress had passed legislation authorizing the president to sell reserved lead mines "as soon as practicable" since the system of granting Leases had proved to be unprofitable to both the government and the lessees, many of whom refused to pay the rent. The general practice of early federal Legislation was to make a distinction between mineral lands and other lands, deal with them separately, and generally withhold mineral lands from disposal except through special legislation dealing with particular land. In 1848, following the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, a vast land area was ceded to the United States by Mexico. This area included the present states of California, Nevada, and Utah, as well as portions of Arizona. Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming. This abolished the Mexican laws and customs relating to mining and preceded the adoption of the miners&apos; own rules and customs. The adoption of those rules and customs followed a hard-fought battle between western congressmen and the eastern establishment. The western congressmen advocated adopting local customs through a location patent system, while the eastern establishment, particularly in Ohio and Indiana, favored an all- leasing system to pay off Civil War debts. The first mining law was passed in 1869 as an amendment to an act granting right-of-way to ditch land owners, and it was followed by the 1872 Mining Law. Precedent was established for the first categories of protected lands in the opening words of this act, which included the phrase "all unreserved" lands. Reserved lands subsequently defined included military and Indian reservations and were excluded from location since they were determined to be reserved lands. In 1986, the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) embarked on a major research effort to develop technology that could substantially reduce worker exposure to face hazards by simply relocating the equipment operators to an area of relative safety. This reduced-exposure mining system (REMS) research effort enhances the USBM&apos;s ongoing health and safety efforts aimed at reducing and controlling dust and noise and reducing accidents through training and better mining practices. This paper reports on the progress made on the developing research and demonstrates the technologies required for the computer-assisted teleremote operation of continuous mining machines, haulage systems and roof bolting machines.

The adsorption behavior of gold in ammoniacal solutions on to activated carbon has been studied. The gold loading capacity of the activated carbon used in the system and the recovery efficiency by the adsorption were examined. The parameters affecting the adsorption of gold on to activated carbon included temperature, agitation speed, concentration of &apos;cation and anion as well as that of ammonia. It was found that the maximum gold loading on activated carbon used was about 10 kg of gold per ton of carbon. The recovery of gold by the adsorption from ammoniacal solutions was dependent upon the initial gold concentration in the solution. A recovery of 98% of gold was obtained on to the activated carbon under experimental conditions after 120 hour adsorption. It was also found that the initial adsorption rate was relatively fast compared to the whole period of the adsorption. The apparent activation energy for the adsorption was measured to be 15.8 kJ/mol. It was believed that the kinetics of gold adsorption on activated carbon was controlled by pore diffusion.
