To increase zinc recovery in the concentrate, this investigation performed mineralogical characterization, dispersion studies, bench and pilot-scale flotation experiments and an industrial flotation trial. The objective was to verify the flotation behavior of the silicate zinc ore (calamine type) in the presence of slimes, with the aid of dispersing agents. Characterization studies identified the major minerals in the flotation feed as hemimorphite (calamine), quartz and dolomite. Dispersion tests showed that enhanced dispersion of the particles in the pulp in the absence of reagents occured at a pH range between 8.5 and 12.0. Bench-scale flotation experiments were planned using the statistical tool of complete factorial design at two levels, replicated once. These experiments showed, and were confirmed at the pilot-plant scale, that higher doses of sodium sulfide and polymeric dispersant combined with sodium silicate favored a higher metallurgical recovery. At 6,800 g/t (218 oz/st) sodium sulfide and 6,992 g/t (224 oz/st) polymeric dispersing agent combined with sodium silicate, a zinc grade of 38.4% in the final concentrate was achieved, at an average metallurgical recovery of 72.4%. The industrial trial confirmed the pilot scale results, leading to zinc recovery of 76.1% and a 37.3% zinc grade in the concentrate. The paper will describe the $1.7 billion Milwaukee Program. Past contracting practices of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District are discussed. To minimize costs and claims, the MMSD has implemented some recommendations from Better Contracting for Underground Construction. Currently implemented are: full disclosure of subsurface data including interpretations, the deletion of disclaimers relating to subsurface information, use of the federal Differing Site Condition clause, payment for mobilization. Also considered was the recommendation concerning Wrap Up Insurance. The MMSD shares and allocates certain designated risks through the Contract. A claims handling methodology has been developed and used on this major construction program.

Location Xiaolangdi is located in the Henan province of the People’s Republic of China. The distance between Xiaolangdi and the capital of Henan, Zhengzhou, is about200 km. Xiaolangdi is located on the Yellow River at the end of its big characteristic knee. It can be easily found on the map by locating Luoyang. The closest big city to Xiaolangdi is Luoyang (about 45 km). This city has about1 million inhabitants and is well known also to foreigners for its famous historical past. It has been the capital of China through 10 dynasties in former times. Overview The Xiaolangdi Multipurpose Dam Project is located at the last gorge of the middle reach of the Yellow River. The main purposes of the project are: -flood control, - ice jam control, - sediment control, - irrigation, - water supply, - hydroelectric power generation. The project consists of many structures, these are 10 intake towers, 9 flood &sediment tunnels, 6 power tunnels, 1 underground powerhouse, and 1 zone dearth and rockfill dam with a sloping impervious core, 154m high, with a crest length of 1317m. The powerhouse mainly features 6 turbine and generator units of 300 MW, totalling installed capacity of 1800 MW and annual energy output of5.1 GWH. The total storage capacity of the reservoir is 12.65 billion m³ of which 5.1billion m³ is live storage. Of the Yellow River drainage basin, 694,000 km2 or 92,3percent is located upstream of Xiaolangdi Dam Site. Xiaolangdi is located in a key position for flood and sediment control of the Yellow River. Upon completion, Xiaolangdi Dam and Reservoir will effectively mitigate catastrophic floods, the control level will be increased from the present less than 100-year return period up to 10,000 years. The remediation of contaminated sites has gained great importance in many industrialized countries. One method for cleaning the polluted soils from such sites is "soil washing," the scope of which is the separation of the contaminants from the soil. Soil washing is an outstanding example for a successful transfer of technology from Mineral Processing to Environmental Engineering. This presentation intends to introduce the Mineral Processing Engineer to soil washing through a short review of the fundamentals, and the discussion of an example for a successful soil cleaning operation in Switzerland.

Gold assays from production blastholes in the Mercur Hill Pit were used to delineate known ore zones and to determine how well previous exploration drilling defined these zones. The most important factors causing inadequate ore zone definition were: 1) inappropriate location of drill holes relative to the ore zones, 2) presence of stopes from previous mining, 3) sampling and assaying errors, and 4) smoothing of the ore zone boundaries during ore reserve estimation. Infill drilling strategies were evaluated to determine the efficiency with which a given drill pattern defined the known ore zones. A drilling strategy was developed which improved ore zone delineation when compared to techniques which maintained uniform drill spacing.

Wastes related to abandoned mine sites can constitute important potential pollution sources, depending on their mineralogical and geochemical characteristics and volume. Mine waste disposal sites contain a diverse variety of wastes including overburden material and waste rocks, the ore which cannot be economically removed and wastes from the smelting processes when they are accomplished at the mine site. These materials are usually heterogeneous in size, mineralogy and metal concentrations. Asturias, in northern Spain, has an extensive mining history and, in consequence, there are abundant unreclaimed and derelict mine sites with abandoned mines and spoil heaps of different age, morphology, content and dimensions. In these spoil heaps, waste materials are subjected to the intense action of a humid environment, so the instability of sulphides and sulpharsenides results in the production of acid and metal-rich leachates, which are incorporated to surface water or infiltrated through the land reaching groundwater bodies. The mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of the stored materials are key data to evaluate if they represent an environmental risk. Mineralogy and geochemistry of wastes and the particular specific environmental conditions of each site affect the rate of weathering and therefore the metal release. The characterisation of mine wastes is a necessary step in order to establish suitable assessment strategies with the aim of reducing the leaching, transport and widespread of ecotoxic elements from mining wastes to the environment (surface water, sediments, soils and air). As a consequence of the weathering of As-rich mineral phases, high arsenic contents are commonly detected in effluents from mine voids and spoil heap leachates.

BP Minerals America (BPMA) has completed its $400 million modernization of Kennecott Utah Copper's Bingham Canyon mine. Modernized facilities include the in-pit crusher, conveyor, ore storage area, concentrator, ore pipe-line, and tailings pipeline. With modernization, Kennecott will achieve substantial cost reductions. Bingham Canyon is now one of the lowest cost copper producers in the world. And the mine will continue to provide jobs and income in Utah for another 30 years or more. The Modernization Project began in February 1986. The work took 33 months. In late 1987, the construction force peaked at 1100 workers. Kennecott Utah Copper now employs a permanent work force of 2100 employees. Less equipment and more efficiency The modernization work has increased the scale of the facilities that transport and process copper ore. A large, continuous transport system has replaced multiple haulage units. Fewer but larger pieces of equipment have replaced many crushing, grinding, and flotation units. The result is less maintenance, fewer employees, and improved metal recoveries. About one-third of the $400 million modernization project is directed at improving ore movement by eliminating rail transport. The new concentrator accounts for the remaining two-thirds of the modernization investment. The modernized plant was started up in stages. In February, ore was fed to the crusher. By the end of March, the three grinding lines were operating and the flotation circuit was producing copper concentrate. In July, the design through-put rate of 70 kt/d (77,000 stpd) was reached. October saw the achievement of targeted metal recoveries that corresponded to the fully modernized operation. It is estimated that Bingham Canyon will annually produce 181 kt (200,000 st) of refined copper, 9.3 t (300,000 oz) of gold, 71 t (2.3 million oz) of silver, and 5.4 kt (12 million lb) of molybdenite. Current Bingham Canyon production is about 97 kt/d (107,000 stpd) and a similar amount of overburden. Some 70 kt/d (77,000 stpd) of ore are processed through the in-pit crusher and 27 kt/d (30,000 stpd) of ore are transported by rail. The Bingham Canyon mine has yielded more than 11 Mt (12 million st) of refined copper. In 1863, precious metals - silver-bearing lead - were first discovered in Bingham Canyon. What was once a mountain is now a huge open pit. In fact, the mine is the world's largest man made excavation. The pit is some 4 km (2.5 miles) wide and 0.8 km (0.5 miles) deep. Since the pit began operating in 1906, more than 4.5 Gt (5 billion st) of material have been removed. Modernized facilities Electric 21 m3 (27 cu yd) or 23 m3 (30 cu yd) shovels are used to load the haulage trucks. Both 154 t (170 st) and 181 t (200 st) trucks are used to haul the ore to a mobile, in-pit crusher. The crusher replaces three crushers located at the old concentrators. There are two dumping locations at the new crusher, which can handle two trucks a minute. The 1.5 x 2.7 m (60 x 109 in.), 745 kW (1000 hp) Allis-Chalmers gyratory crusher reduces the ore to 254 mm (10 in.) size or less and delivers it to the conveyor. The crusher and conveyor systems are capable of handling 9 kt/h (10,000 stph) of ore.

Since Campbell Mine began processing ore, there has been a gravity gold recovery circuit. From 1947 to 1982, gravity gold was concentrated through the combination of jigs and mercury amalgamation. In 1982, jigs with concentrating table upgrading commenced and was utilized until the end of 1994. As of January of 1995 to the present, Knelson Concentrators in com­bination with concentrating tables have been employed to achieve a refinable product. An evaluation of the justification used for the last change is the focus of this paper.

"An underground limestone mine in eastern Ohio was experiencing significant floor heave and roof falls, attributed to high horizontal stresses. Areas of the mine showing floor heave were monitored with roof-to-floor extensometers and photogrammetry surveys, to determine the rate and magnitude of heave. Extensometer data were recorded hourly at four locations across adjacent entries while photogrammetry surveys of the floor were performed at the same locations every two to five weeks. A final survey was performed using an I-Site 8200 laser scanner. Following instrumentation, floor heave up to 10.1 cm (4 in) was measured by the extensometers, photogrammetric reconstructions, and laser scanner over a 6-month period. The extensometers were biased by the location where they were placed, failing to consistently capture the location and extent of floor heave and cracking. The photogrammetry surveys were not precise enough to capture small magnitude movements. Mining in the area was halted and within several months the floor movement and incidence of roof falls was significantly lessened. INTRODUCTION Limestone formations in the United States can be subject to relatively high horizontal stresses due to the presence of tectonic loading of the strata. Horizontal stresses have a documented history of causing stability issues in underground limestone mines. Kuhnhein and Ramer (2004) discussed the influence of horizontal stress on complex ground control interactions associated with limestone pillar design and mine layouts. Esterhuizen et al. (2008) documented roof damage observations associated with high horizontal stresses such has roof guttering, beam instability, oval-shaped falls, and failure propagations. There have also been a number of documented case histories of horizontal stress causing unexpected roof and pillar failures at shallow depths (Stacey and Yathavan, 2003). To the knowledge of the authors, there has only been one well-documented case of floor failure causing stability issues in an underground limestone mine. Murphy et al. (2015) documented the role that a weak, moisture-sensitive floor had in the development of a massive roof collapse. For this paper, the study site neighbored, and was in the same general geology of, the site in Murphy et al. (2015). However, the weak, moisture-sensitive floor was not present for the current study. The current study site has experienced significant floor instabilities caused by high horizontal stresses. The instability area was monitored using two different methods to determine if the floor failure would eventually propagate into roof or pillar failure. The objective of this paper is to analyze displacement monitoring measurements from string potentiometers and remote sensing techniques in an area experiencing active movement. Based on the measurement trends and observed damage from inside of the mine, the presumed failure process will be discussed."

"Testing was conducted to determine the ability of foam to maintain roof coverage in a simulated longwall mining environment. Approximately 27% of the respirable coal mine dust can be attributed to longwall shield movement. Developing controls for this dust source has been difficult. The application of foam is a possible dust control method for this source. Laboratory testing of two foam agents was conducted to determine their ability of foam to adhere to a simulated longwall face roof surface. Two different foam generation methods were used; compressed air (CA) and blower air (BA). Using a new imaging technology, image processing and analysis utilizing ImageJ software produced quantifiable results of foam roof coverage. For CA foam in 3.3 m/s (3.3 m/s (650 fpm)) ventilation at 3 minutes after application, 98% of agent A was intact, while 95% of agent B was intact on the roof. At 30 minutes after application 94% of agent A was intact while only 20% of agent B remained. For BA in 3.3 m/s (3.3 m/s (650 fpm)) ventilation, the results were dependent upon nozzle type. Three different nozzles were tested. At 30 minutes after application 74-92% of foam agent A remained, while 3-50% of foam agent B remained. CA foam seems to remain intact for longer durations and is easier to apply than BA foam. However, more water drained from the foam when using CA foam which demonstrates that BA foam retains more water at the roof surface. Agent A seemed to be the better performer as far as roof application is concerned. This testing demonstrates that roof application of foam is feasible and is able withstand a typical face ventilation velocity, establishing this technique’s potential for longwall shield dust control. INTRODUCTION NIOSH personnel have visited many longwall operations at various geographical locations in the U.S., conducting benchmark surveys to characterize current operating practices and dust control measures in use. Sources of respirable dust generated from the longwall face have been identified as: intake (10%), stage loader (20%), shields (27%), and shearer (43%) [1]. Dust generated from the shearer, armored face conveyor, and the stage loader can mainly be controlled by water sprays and increases in ventilation air quantities, however, research has demonstrated limited effective controls for dusts generated by shield movements [2]. One possible approach to mitigating shield dust generation is to apply a layer of water or foam to the shield-roof interface. Once this interface is blanketed with foam or water, dust will be less likely to become airborne and contaminate the airways over the personnel walkways. Though water is an abundant and common dust control measure, roof applications have limited success because water is unable to remain in-place in adequate quantities for the necessary duration between application and shield advance. Past and current testing of foam for material properties has shown that it has longer applicability times, ranging from 10 to 60 minutes [3] and has shown better performance for dust control, ranging from 19-96% improved efficiency over water [4, 5, 6, 7, 8]. The majority of this foam dust control research has focused on dust control efficiency at the longwall shearer or continuous miner cutting drum."

[On Pier D in the Port of Long Beach, California, the Port of Long Beach has built a new bulk cement distribution terminal. The facility is operated by Pacific Coast Cement Corporation, who designed the complex and leased it from the Port of Long Beach on a 40-year lease. At one bulk cement is unloaded from vessels carrying from 12,000 to 30,000 t. The unloading is performed with pig speed mechanical unloading equipment and delivered into a concrete silo complex with, a capacity of 50,000 t. From the silos, bulls cement is loaded into trucks for delivery. The facility was completed in September 1981.]

In December 1983 the author undertook an investigation in east Texas which was organized to learn the feasibility of applying geophysical techniques over shallow lignite deposits. The work embraced experimental high resolution seismic reflection and offset Wenner resisitivity sounds over three 1/4 to 1/2 mile test sections. This site also was sponsored by Woodward-Clyde Consultants (WCC) and a consortium headed by North American Coal Corporation. The principal objective of this investigation was to learn whether the aforementioned geophysical techniques could be applied over shallow lignite deposits (i.e. located at approximately 100' to 300' in depth) and consequently provide structural and stratigraphic information useful for resource and reserve characterization. A secondary objective was to determine if these same techniques could disclose the nature of the overburden and the distribution of ground water therein.

Laboratory and pilot tests have shown that the grinding of some aluminas makes two populations appear : agglomerates’ and ultimate crystals’. Classical breakage functions (Size Mass Balance Method) aren't able to describe correctly this kind of grinding. So we have optimized a particular breakage matrix which takes into account the fact that the agglomerates can either be reduced in size or either be blown up to liberate the ultimate crystals. The models which were developed using this breakage matrix are in good agreement with the experimental results of the pilot tests. The industrial breakage functions were estimated from pilot breakage functions, using scale up prediction procedures and plant tests. The agreement between predicted and actual plant performance is excel1ent.A 20 % increase in capacity was predicted to be available by improving the grinding circuit classifier performances.

Purification of molybdenite concentrate from copper concentrates was performed by sulfation. The sulfation of molybdenite concentrates was carried out with pure sulfuric acid (> 96%) at 160–190 °C to study the influence of the reaction temperature and reaction time on the residual copper in the molybdenite concentrates. A purified concentrate with less than 0.1 wt% copper and low levels of other metals were obtained. For up to 7.1 wt% copper, the conditions required are a temperature of 190 °C, a reaction time of 14 h, and a moly/acid weight ratio of 1/1. Furthermore, several designs of sulfation reactors were evaluated in order to obtain the desired level of copper in the product and to analyze the influence of the operational and design parameters on the reactor dispersion number (Le). The basic design for an 80-t/day plant fed with 4 wt% copper molybdenite concentrate requires five backmixed reactors in series, each measuring 8 m3, operating at 190 °C and with a reaction time of 10 h. The reactor must be protected against severe corrosion by the hot sulfuric acid with either Teflon, glass or ceramic.

This presentation will be a general overview of the Cerrejon Coal Project being developed jointly by Carbocol, an entity of the Colombian government, and Intercor, an Exxon affiliate. The word "Cerrajon", by the way, is simply Spanish for a small hill. There is a distinctive hill near the mine site, and it's the only landmark of any significance. It's shown in Figure 1. So the locals call this area "El Cerrejon", "the little hill." Let me start with some of the highlights of the project, summarized in Figure 2, and then go into more detail later. A four-year feasibility study covered the geology, quality, engineering, construction operation and marketing of coal from this region. This study led Exxon to declare the project as commercial in July of 1980. Then in September of 1980 the president of Colombia gave the government's okay to proceed.

Unsaturated flow and solute transport were studied in three large columns measuring 1.5 m diameter x 2 m height, loaded with up to 3.7 t of oxidised waste rock, which was excavated from the Stratmat pile at Heath Steele Division, Noranda Inc. and contained elevated concentrations of zinc in the pore water. The bottom of each column was partitioned into 37 squares, each of which was drained independently. Following rain simulations at the top of the rock bed, the drainage in each drain port was monitored for volume and physicochemical parameters at pre-determined intervals. This paper describes some of the observations resulting from the experiments. The main conclusion of the study is that unsaturated flows in waste rock are heterogeneous, and flow channelling is ubiquitous. The results imply that the transport of solutes from oxidised waste rock to its toe drainage is subject to various controlling mechanisms, including geochemical equilibrium control and successive pore water dilution control.

DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT The Straight Creek Tunnel site is located approximately sixty (60) miles west of Denver, Colorado, on Interstate Route 70 in the vicinity of Loveland Pass, in the Rocky Mountains. The ultimate project will consist of dual two-lane vehicular tunnels with a building at each portal to house mechanical ventilation equipment and other installations. The tunnels run virtually east-west on an ascending 1.64 percent grade for a distance of approximately 8,900 feet, and will pass beneath the Continental Divide at an elevation of about 11,000 feet above sea level. The maximum cover is 1,450 feet and each tunnel is approximately 48 feet wide by 50 feet high as excavated. The work now under construction consists of the North Tunnel, which initially will have two-way traffic. Ultimately it will be the west bound lanes for Interstate 70. The completion of the North Tunnel will be the fulfillment of a long felt need for better communication through the high Rocky Mountains of central Colorado and is a vital link in Interstate Route 70. Today the standard method for grinding ore is the wet process. This is mainly due to the fact that the downstream process is wet and considering the total circuit dry grinding is not the most eco­nomical method for the comminution of the ore. Presently in gold ore processing dry grinding is only applied in cases where whole ore roasting is required downstream from the milling plant or if organic carbonaceous matters and sulfides are the primary reasons for the refractoriness. Since dry ore can be fed to the roaster, a dry grinding mill can advantageously be applied. In cases where d1y grinding could be applied advantageously for instance if the ore contains water soluble material and wet grinding is not possible there are serious concerns prevailing within the industty against this technology due to several reasons. Besides of the aspects as discussed later in this paper, there are several plants in operation with little success and considerable operational prob­lems. The reasons for this often lie in the fact that the several com­ponents of such a plant are bought from independent sources with­out considering the system requirements. It is essential that the dry grinding plants require accurate design between drying, pneumatic transport and grinding of the ore in the circuit. This paper will address some of these concerns raised in the industiy from a mill vendor's view along with discussing the development for the selection and configuration of the various dty grinding circuits.

Dimethylglyoxime reacts with nickel in a buffered ammonical-citrate solution containing the detergent ?Aquet? and hyroxylamine-hydrochloride. The resulting nickelous dimethylglyoxime is extracted with xylene. Visual comparison with standards permits the estimation of from 50 to 10,000 ppm of nickel. Soil, rock, or sediment may be decomposed by digestion with (1-3) nitric acid, allowing about 70 determinations per man-day to be carried out. With minor modifications to the above procedure, sediment and soil may be semi-quantitatively analyzed for nickel at the sample site. The chemical equipment is easily portable and the analysis extremely rapid because the buffer, dime thylglyoxime and xylene are added simultaneously to the sample and no heating is required. The sensitivity varies with the "availability" of the nickel ions; under favorable conditions, one may obtain a positive test for as little as 10 micrograms in soils and sediments. This procedure is similar to one, for the field determination of heavy metals described elsewhere by the author.
