American Barrick Resources Corp. has come farther, faster in the last 11 years than any mining company in recent memory. Acquisition of Lac Minerals Ltd. in August 1994 now makes Barrick the largest gold producer in the world outside South Africa. In terms of market capitalization, the company is the world's most valued gold producer. American Barrick's 28.3-km2 (7000acre) Goldstrike property on Nevada's Carlin Trend, the primary engine for past growth, was purchased in 1987 for $62 million. Regarded as an attractive exploration target, Goldstrike instead propelled American Barrick to the front rank of world gold producers. In 1993, the company produced 50.75 t (1,631,988 oz), 44.78 t (1,439,929 oz) from Goldstrike. Reserves on the property totaled 905 t (29.1 million oz) at the end of 1993, the largest in North America.

Perturbations arising from mining operations significantly affect the stability of rock masses, and the influences aggerates with the rapid increase of mining-operation depths during recent years. The subsurface structures with major discontinuities subject to seismic hazards resulted from the shear-slip behaviors of rock masses. In order to identify the shear-slip regime of discontinuities and calculate seismic moment and seismic energy involved with shear-slip behaviors, we use discrete element modeling to study the shear slip failure along discontinuities in an underground mine. The recorded characteristic and properties of sub-contacts in DEM provide a basis for computing and visualizing the temporal and spatial distribution of seismic moment and seismic energy with mining operations. We computed the seismic energy and seismic moment using the numerical modeling method and the analytic method. We compared the result of summing seismic energy and seismic moment from the subcontacts of numerical models and the result of the analytic method. We confirmed that this tool can be used in comparative analyses. We also found that seismic moment and seismic energy, associated with shear stress drop and shear displacement increase, accumulate in the vicinity of major discontinuities. Mining operations at a greater depth cause greater changes of seismic moment and seismic energy, leading to a higher risk of inducing seismic hazards. Quantifying seismic potential using discrete element modeling can greatly facilitate the investigation of instability of geological discontinuities and thereby can help estimate the potential of seismic hazards.

The study focused on the recovery of vanadium from a Korean vanadium-bearing titaniferous magnetite (VTM) ore, examining the behaviors of magnetic separation and Na2CO3 roasting-water leaching. Two concentrates were prepared using single-stage dry magnetic separation and three-step wet magnetic separation, resulting in V2O5 grades of 0.8% and 1.0% and major gangue mineral SiO2 contents of 6.5% and 1.7%, respectively. These concentrates were subsequently roasted at 1050 °C with the addition of Na2CO3 and then water-leached at 25 °C. Various stoichiometric ratios of V2O5 to Na2CO3 were tested, ranging from 1:1 to 1:40 of the theoretically required amount. As the amount of Na2CO3 increased, the vanadium leaching efficiency showed fluctuations between 4 and 35% for ratios of 1:1 to 1:10, while it linearly increased from 4 to 82% for ratios of 1:10 to 1:40 in the leaching of the low-grade concentrate. In contrast, the leaching efficiency increased from 47 to 74% for ratios of 1:1 to 1:8 and then sharply rose to 84% at a ratio of 1:10 in the leaching of the high-grade concentrate. Subsequently, it reached a plateau of 92 to 94% for ratios of 1:20 to 1:40. The difference in leaching efficiency was primarily due to the reaction of gangue minerals with Na2CO3, which hindered vanadium leaching from the VTM concentrates. This hindrance was notably more pronounced in the low-grade concentrate with the lower salt ratio, as the gangue minerals exhibited a preference for consuming Na2CO3 over vanadium. The mineral formation was analyzed in detail using XRD and MLA to shed light on the mechanism of different vanadium leaching behavior depending on the concentrate grade and vanadium to salt ratio. Based on the results of this study, it is evident that applying a proper magnetic separation procedure is significant to achieving satisfactory vanadium recovery with less salt amount by removing gangue minerals ahead.

Bentonite collected from Nowshera (Pakistan) was treated with NaCl, and the < 2-μm clay fractions were separated by sedimentation process. The textural changes in NaCl treated purified bentonite were compared with raw and physically purified sample. It was detected that the NaCl-treated purified bentonite and the sample purified by simple sedimentation, respectively, consist of sodium-montmorillonite and calcium-montmorillonite as a major clay mineral. The honeycombed-type morphology was observed for both the purified samples; however, the particles of NaCl treated purified bentonite were relatively in a compact form. The particle sizes of both the purified samples were found considerably smaller. The high volume percent of the fine particles was noticed in the NaCl-treated purified bentonite. This attributed that the sodium exchange has a valuable impact on the bentonite dispersion in aqueous media during particle size measurement. The relatively high mesopore area/volume and micropore area/volume and specific surface area (SSA) were detected in purified samples. The NaCl-treated purified sample showed relatively high mesopores area/volume than the sample obtained by simple sedimentation. These changes seem to be originated from either high montmorillonite contents and/or the smaller particle size, which might be produced after the layer rearrangement during the interlayer cation replacement by Na+ ions. The large SSA and high porosity of purified samples particularly the NaCl-treated bentonite suggest their potential use as adsorbents, catalysts, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics.

In an underground coal mining environment, a frictional ignition may be defined as the ignition of an explosive air/ methane/coal dust mixture by mining machinery. As the use of power loading equipment has become more widespread, frictional ignition incidents have increased. There have been many fatalities and injuries from this cause including the death of eleven miners in Sydney coalfield of Nova Scotia, Canada in 1979. This paper reports on the findings of a preliminary study carried out under the auspices of the Coal Research Laboratories, Department of Energy, Mines and Resources Canada. The objective of this study has been to identify a Longwall face cutting system that is inherently safer than the conventional shearer loaders used in Nova Scotia.

Iron is a key detrimental impurity in silica sands that determines their contribution to high-technology industries. Herein, a simple ecologically sound approach is investigated for iron removal from a silica sand sample obtained from the El-Zaafarana area-Egypt. The sample was subjected to a detailed microscopic mineralogical study supported by XRD and XRF characterization. The sample was beneficiated using distilled water attrition scrubbing and screening over a 25 μm sieve followed by leaching using a mixture of equal amounts of phosphoric and oxalic acids. Leaching experiments were designed and analyzed using the Box-Behnken design (BBD) methodology. A model was developed and evaluated using the analysis of variance technique to map the relationship between the residual iron oxide in the produced concentrate and selected variables such as leaching temperature, oxalic acid, and phosphoric acid concentrations. XRD and mineralogical analysis reveal that quartz is the most dominant constituent of the studied sand and other minerals such as kaolinite, iron oxide, rutile, and zircon exist in trace amounts. The head sample shows a silica and iron oxide content of 95.69% and 2379 ppm, respectively. Attrition and separation over a 25 μm sieve increase the silica content to 97.05% and decreases the residual iron oxide to 455 ppm. The final product after leaching under optimized conditions shows 99.82% silica and 55 ppm iron oxide.

The recovery of heavy minerals by gravity concentration during grinding is practised widely in the minerals industry. Studies have shown that the grade and recovery of the concentrate depends not only on the performance of the concentrator but also on the degree of liberation achieved in the mills and the scavenging action of the hydrocyclones closing the grinding circuit. In the current study, consideration is given to the development of mathematical models to quantify and unify the operations of comminution, liberation, classification and concentration. The models are based on test work done at production scale with gold ore.

In the mining industry and particularly in the processing plants, we use some large and unusual equipment. Understanding what it is and what it does is important to good operations, but how do you teach a new employee. When I started out in this field, the information on the processing equipment was easy to come by. Equipment manufacturers readily supplied it; their salesmen, often engineers themselves, knew how important the availability of this information was. Old engineers used their notebooks to train the new engineers. Over time this has changed. Equipment manufacturers have changed hands or gone out of business, and often the older engineers are gone. As a start in reversing this, this presentation will be an introduction to sizing, selecting, and operation of some of this equipment, in particular gravity separating equipment. Major portions of this have been excerpted from A Mining Engineers Notebook: Mineral processing (2).

"Since 2008, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has required the installation of refuge alternatives (RAs) in underground coal mines (MSHA, 2008). MSHA requires that RAs provide an environment with breathable air for entrapped miners for a 96-hour period. Heat buildup inside an occupied RA is a serious concern. Without a means to dissipate the heat and humidity generated by the occupants and the carbon dioxide scrubbing system, the temperature and humidity inside RAs could lead to severe discomfort or heat stress depending on the mine ambient temperature before and during occupation of the RA. In its 2006 report, the West Virginia Mine Safety Technology Task Force (2006) recommended an apparent temperature limit of 35 °C (95 °F) for RAs. In Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations Part 7.504, or 30 CFR 7.504, MSHA specifies a maximum apparent temperature of 35 °C (95 °F) inside an occupied RA (MSHA, 2016). The apparent temperature is calculated using both air temperature and relative humidity (Steadman, 1979).Calculations can be used to deter-mine if the air within an occupied RA will reach the apparent temperature limit. In these calculations, the mine temperature could be assumed to re-main constant. With this assumption, the effects of the mine strata thermal mass and thermal conductivity on the heat buildup in an RA are ignored. Re-search conducted by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) shows that the mine air and strata temperatures surrounding an RA increase when subjected to the heat of an occupied RA (Yantek, 2014). Thus, calculations performed with the assumption that the mine temperature is constant would underpredict the resulting dry-bulb temperature and apparent temperature for a given RA occupancy. The mine air temperature has been used as the basis for RA temperature calculations. However, there has been no research to confirm that the mine air temperature is the appropriate basis."

This reaction to a change in in-situ conditions (subsequent to mining) at a mine site combined with the observed relationships of surface-disturbing subsidence features at locations where the predominant overburden material is fine-grained, provides a predictive tool for the subsidence engineer.

Interest is increasing in obtaining incremental improvements in mineral recoveries in flotation processes because of changing world economic conditions. Research on collector reagents, long indispensable components in flotation systems may provide the cheapest and simplest route to higher metal recoveries. Sulfhydryl group - containing compounds (-SH) and their salts, e.g., dithiophosphates, xanthates and a few other derivatives are commonly used to promote the flotation of sulfide minerals. Alkyl mercaptans, another class of sulfhydryl compounds, have long been known to have collecting properties but have been relegated to dormancy for one reason or another. This paper reports results from new investigations of alkyl mercaptans, trithiocarbonates, and a petroleum oil with a variety of western domestic and Canadian ores for copper and molybdenum sulfides recovery. Specific opportunities are pointed out to the industry for mineral recovery enhancement through the use of the proper reagent combination.

The traditional approach for the beneficiation of South African siliceous sedimentary phosphate ores has been reverse cationic flotation. The robustness of this approach, however, has been a concern due to its sensitivity to parameters such as slimes content, headgrade ( P2O5 and SiO2 content), reagent dosages and conditioning times. The phosphate mineralisation for the ore body under investigation is predominantly carbonate fluorapatite composed of mainly quartz and apatite and minor amounts of chlorite, ilmenite and carbonates. Beneficiation of low grade sedimentary ores containing calcareous impurities, such as calcite and/or dolomite in addition to siliceous gangue, is required to meet the increasing demand; therefore, much research has been carried out to find an alternative technique to beneficiate this material. This paper investigates traditional flotation approaches versus the currently adopted ‘Crago Process’. Comparative results are presented in terms of upgrade potential for the production of concentrate rock for downstream applications. The novelty of the ‘Crago Process’ lies in its double stage approach, i.e. direct fatty acid flotation followed by reverse cationic amine flotation. The Crago process was able to achieve higher upgrades reporting at 32.1% P2O5 compared to conventional cationic flotation only achieving grades of 18.5% P2O5. Furthermore, the recovery gain was 3%.

How to obtain optimum slope angles for future open pit mines using the rock mechanics approach is the subject of this paper. In the past ten years significant developments in open pit rock mechanics have come about. This has been due to the mining industry&apos;s need for the steepest, yet safe, pit slope angles attainable. Requirements for economically achieving slope stability and the actual payoff that may be achieved through stability studies have been previously discussed&apos;, by stability engineers. While the emphasis has generally been placed on the concept of "stable slopes" in the past, it is suggested that emphasis now be placed on "optimum slopes" or "optimum slope angles". A definition of an optimum slope angle is one which (1) is as steep as possible and practical from orebody and mining constraint standpoints and yet, (2) maintains the accepted standard of safety defined by a safety factor against failure and/or a probability of failure. In other words, the emphasis is placed on achieving practical stability results as defined by safety and economic considerations, as opposed to simply achieving stability. The essential purposes of this paper are to (1) outline the need for optimum slope angles, (2) discuss the procedures for using the rock mechanics approach in slope angle design for a future open pit and (3) specify the end results that may be achieved by using such an approach. While the basic concepts and recommendations outlined in this paper may be equally applicable to soil as well as rock slopes, the emphasis and procedures have been directed at rock slope angle design.

This study summarizes the results of various numerical and laboratory experiments per-formed to study the effect of airflow recirculation on gas concentration. The numerical exercises were carried out on a simulated mine ventilation net-work. The laboratory experiments were conducted at the Mackay School of Mines&apos; airflow monitoring system in Reno, Nevada. In both cases, the airflow was recirculated through the system by means of a main fan and a set of booster fans. The booster fans were positioned to produce two types of recirculation: In line and Cross-cut. For each type, various recirculation conditions were generated by changing the booster fan pressure. During each test, the gas emission rate at the simulated working face was kept constant. The study illustrates the conditions under which controlled airflow recirculation may be used to solve a district ventilation problem.

Brohm Mining Co.&apos;s Gilt Edge Mine in the northern Black Hills was a surface heap-leach operation that was active from the 1980s until 1999. Financing problems and acid drainage concerns at the mine were reported in the late 1990s. In February 1999 the Governor of South Dakota announced plans to request the US Environmental Protection Agency to help clean up acidic water at the mine and reclaim the site. In July 1999 the parent company of Brohm, Dakota Mining, filed for bankruptcy in Canada. Because of the bankruptcy and environmental problems, the State of South Dakota intervened and began water treatment. The mine was declared a Superfund site in 2000. Hydrologic issues include the potential for acidic drainage from the site. The mine is at the headwaters of Strawberry Creek, which drains into Bear Butte Creek. About four miles downstream, Bear Butte Creek loses its discharge to swallow holes in the karstic Madison Limestone aquifer, a regionally extensive and valuable groundwater reservoir. Other concerns at the site include treatment of acidic water in mine pits and a waste rock dump.

The effect of anions such as sulfate, chloride, and nitrate on the solubility of rare earth element-bearing phosphates and fluorocarbonates has been examined using relevant thermodynamic data. The study has found that these anions have significant influences on the overall dissolution of rare earth elements (REEs) from various sources in the aqueous media. The thermodynamic calculations in this study have indicated that the speciation of REEs with the anions tends to increase the overall solubility of the REE-bearing minerals. However, in some cases, strong precipitation of REEs with some of these anions causes an adverse effect on the solubility of these elements. It has been found that sulfate ion has the most pronounced effect on the solubility compared to nitrate and chloride, in which the latter two acids exhibited almost identical results. The calculated results have indicated that REE-oxide (hydrated) is the easiest compound to dissolve, followed by carbonate, phosphate, fluoride, sulfate, fluoro-carbonate, and oxalate in that order.

Delayed coal bursts in deep coal mines have caused significant fatalities and economic losses in recent years. Instead of occurring right around the advancing face, this particular type of coal burst is characterized by its occurrence at a certain distance behind the advancing face. To better understand the mechanism of a delayed coal burst, we used borehole camera, electromagnetic CT, and borehole deformation monitoring device to observe the fracturing and deformation process of an advancing entry’s surrounding coal in the field. Borehole camera detection showed a zonal disintegration phenomenon in the advancing entry’s surrounding coal. Electromagnetic CT detection showed that zonal disintegration developed within 14 days of excavation. Borehole deformation monitoring indicated a deformation rate difference between the intact zone and fractured zones. The deformation rate difference was observed to increase with time and cause increasing elastic energy accumulation in the intact zone. The cumulative elastic energy in the intact zone finally caused a delayed coal burst in the entry. Sensitivity analysis of the cumulative elastic energy was conducted based on a thick-walled model deduced from field detection. The model shows that the smaller thickness of the intact zone brings higher elastic energy in the intact zone. This investigation provides an improved understanding of delayed coal bursts in deep coal mines.

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and six EPRI-member utilities are sponsoring research to define relationships between coal properties and coal handling behavior. Deratings and outages caused by plugged chutes or bunkers or frozen coal can cost utilities millions of dollars annually in lost energy production as well as in manpower to restore coal flow. There is also the added expense of maintaining redundant equipment to assure a continuous coal feed to the boiler, a common practice for utilities. Over the past two years, researchers at CQ Inc. and Iowa state university have collected and analyzed coal samples to develop a coal handleability index for utilities to use when specifying coals for their power plants. These coal samples cover ranges in ash content, rank, grindability, size distribution, and moisture content--properties that affect the handling behavior of coals. Other properties, such as the washability and ash composition, are measured as well. Over the remaining two years of the project, all of these analyses will be correlated to handling behavior, measured using a triaxial shear tester that determines the strength of a coal under compression. An index will be developed and validated at host utility power plants.

A series of tests were run on soil samples collected near the site of a Socorro, NM lead smelter that was abandoned more than 98 years ago. Three 30.5- x 30.5-m (100-X 100-ft) squares provided 13 samples each. As described in Part I (this issue), each sample was divided into seven splits according to particle size. A mineralogical examination of the fine-size fraction of Pb-contaminated soils failed to reveal crystalline Pb compounds. These authors conclude that Pb is present as amorphous phases or is adsorbed on the surfaces of soil particles. Site vegetation contained elevated Pb levels that increased with increasing Pb amounts in the soil. However, the biological absorption coefficient (BAC) indicates that some of the site&apos;s Pb is unavailable, or the plants are able to limit their uptake. Of the vegetation tested, rabbit bush showed the greatest increase of Pb levels in its roots, whereas levels in creosote were highest in the foliage. In cactus, the Pb levels varied. The amount of Pb due to dust incorporated in plant tissue is almost negligible compared to the amount absorbed through the plant vascular system.
