Hypersonic tunnel boring (HTB) uses directed, high velocity projectile impacts to remove rock. HTB is highly independent of rock strength and targets hard, abrasive rock and variable rock environments. This paper discusses history, theory and presents test (2×2 m and .75×.5 m tunnels) field trial results and technical and economic evaluation. The HTB tests are compared against the historic ‘project REAM’ and the concept against tunnel boring machines and drill & blast in design studies for full-scale 12 m and 4.5×5.5 m tunnels. The positive results indicate that under these conditions HTB can replace Drill & Blast and Tunnel Boring Machines.

The conference, set for June 14-17, is sponsored by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, & Exploration, Inc. (SME) and the Construction Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers. The four-day conference will feature more than 100 technical papers in 19 sessions. Two one-day short courses are also planned, as are a pair of field trips. The paper describes the unique operating features of the Lebanon Concentrator Plant wherein both magnetic concentration and froth flotation are used. Chalcopyrite is selectively floated by the use of dual collectors, Aerofloats and secondary butyl xanthate. Both potassium ethyl xanthate and sodium isopropyl xanthate (dual collectors) are dissolved and emulsified with pine oil for the flotation of the pyrite. Sketches describing the plant operations are presented and plant operating metallurgical results obtained are also given. The optimum production of minerals by the froth flotation process is normally achieved [ ] smooth operating conditions, The process, because of its many variables, becomes an art as well as a science. Therefore, any phase of the operation which will aid the operator in his control of the numerous variables will help produce a smoother operating plant, One of the most important variables which the operator deals with is the addition of reagents, These are usually costly items and should be used discretely with minimum amount of waste, The danger is that ,this emphasis may reduce the reagent amount to a point below that required, or, on the other hand an excessive amount is added, Both conditions usually yield poor results. The drea of the metallurgist is to provide the operator with the tools enabling him to produce a good mineralized froth at all times. Normally the operator has no control concerning the type of reagents which he must use. This has usually been worked out for him in the laboratory and by plant-scale tests. He does have limited authority to control the amounts of the reagents at his disposal. This, I believe, is as it should be. However, the operator should be provided with the best combination of reagents for his particular job. The providing of this combination of reagents for his particular job, The providing of this combination is often difficult, yet it is very important in order to yield good results, With this in mind, the dual collector idea was introduced for the selective flotation of chalcopyrite, and also later for the flotation of pyrite at the Concentrator Plant of the Bethlehem Cornwall Corporation in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, Supplying several types of collectors has given the operator an additional effective tool, even though great variations are encountered in ore tonnage treated and in ore composition, This paper deals with the use of the dual collectors and with the addition of the reagents in the form of a pine oil emulsion, or more accurately, a pine oil suspension. It is hoped that other operators may find the ideas helpful. There does not seem, to me, to be definite scientific fact which would substantiate the necessity for the use of dual collectors. However, in actual operations, the metallurgical results at Lebanon became more uniform with the use of dual collectors, I look upon it as an "insurance policy" which greatly aids the operator during those periods when he is having trouble, One theory has been advanced, i.e. one collector has a greater tendency to float the coarser minerals, whereas the other one may float the finer ones. Consequently, a combination of the two collectors will result in optimum recoveries, There has been some evidence that this is true, but it is not conclusive, on the other hand, the use of a xanthate-pine oil suspension (or emulsion) should speed up the surface reaction of the collector with the sulfide minerals, result¬ing in more uniform flotation, This has definitely happened in our particular case. A more interesting unexplainable observation has also occurred; i.e., the xanthate solution does not appear to lose its strength as rapidly when it is in the form of an emulsion (or suspension), This was first observed when a 50 gallon drum of a 20% ethyl xanthate solution was taken to Wilmington, Delaware, for a laboratory test, using a homogenizer to produce the xanthate-pine oil emulsion. Upon arrival, the drum of xanthate had developed a considerable internal pressure, The relief of this pressure was accompanied by a strong odor, When the emulsion was returned to Lebanon for the plant test orders were issued to release the pressure prior to emptying the emulsion. Nopressure had developed within the drum and there was no unusual odor present, Since this time it has been observed that xanthate pine oil suspensions have greatly decreased the possible decomposition of the xanthate solutions. In fact, suspensions have been exposed for more than a month without apparently effecting their reactions in the flotation plant. On the other hand, we found that the regularly mixed concentrated xanthate solutions, after standing for several days, did not give the same results as the freshly made ones. This effect was greatly reduced by the use of xanthate pine oil suspension (or emulsion)

"Australia’s largest rail freight network operator, the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC), has selected GE Transportation’s Movement Planner solution as the key technology enabler for its Hunter Valley-focused network control optimization program.ARTC’s Newcastle-based network control, is the nerve center of Hunter Valley rail operations, where locally based train control professionals make thousands of decisions every day to safely support the annual movement of more than 24 kt/h (26,400 stph) of freight, and tens of thousands of coal, freight, grain and passenger trains each year.ARTC plans to transform its train control function by integrating and then building on Movement Planner, an advanced software solution by GE Transportation that provides real-time rail traffic planning and optimization to enable freight to move more efficiently. “The Hunter Valley rail network is one of the busiest and most complex in the country, supporting the largest coal export port in the world,” ARTC managing director and chief executive officer John Fullerton said.“As bulk freight demands grow, rail operators like ARTC and supply chains like the Hunter Valley coal network need to be creative in the way they respond so the Australian economy doesn’t miss out. Heat stress is a major concern for the health, safety and productivity of miners working in hot and humid underground mines. At greater depth, heat inside underground mines increases due to geothermal gradient, heat released from high-capacity machinery, exposed rock surface, auto-compression of air, human metabolism, etc. Prolonged physical work in thermal environments severely affects the health, safety and efficiency of miners. In order to address this important issue, a systematic literature review (SLR) has been conducted. This SLR aimed to identify the research gap in the area of heat stress effect on underground miners and its control. An extensive literature search was carried out on numerous digital databases, grey literature and conference proceedings to identify relevant research work for this review. Moreover, the impactful studies, methodologies and preventive measures undertaken during the past five decades on the effect of heat stress on underground miners were retrospectively analysed, with a broader aim to explore the need for further research on this pertinent topic. Overall, 571 references were identified from the literature review, out of which 51 research articles addressing the sources of heat, heat stress effects on miners, heat stress indices and control measures for heat stress in underground mines were selected as primary papers for detailed review. Pre-developed fatigue is one of the prime causes of health hazard, safety and productivity loss of miners working in underground high heat stress zones. Hence, development of a better heat stress index integrating personal, environmental parameters and pre-developed fatigue (PDF) of miners is essential.

"The Crandall Canyon Mine (CCM) is located in the Wasatch coal field in central Utah. Extensive longwall mining at CCM preceded a decision to recover coal left in barrier pillars on each side of a set of main entries extending far into the mine. During mining in March 2007, a major bump occurred that led to cessation of mining in the barrier pillar on the north side of the mains and to the start of mining in the south barrier pillar. Subsequent loss of ground control in August 2007, through coal pillar bursts had tragic consequences with loss of six miners and shortly afterward three rescue team members. A U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA)report describes the events in detail (MSHA, 2008).An important lesson to be learned from CCM is the need to select a computer program suitable for pillar design. Computer programs are engineering tools and selecting the right tool for the job is essential. In this regard, minimum program requirements include capability for computing stress distribution within a pillar and adjacent roof and floor strata. The reason is simple: strength of rock is stress dependent; both vary from point to point in pillars and adjacent strata. Preferably, one should follow the evolution of stress as the mining plan is executed from start to finish to assure safety or to warn of a potentially hazardous situation developing as mining progresses.The approach to the problem posed by barrier pillar mining at CCM is conventional in the sense of applying well known finite element modeling techniques to analysis of a proposed mining plan. The engineering purpose is to evaluate the mining plan with respect to ground control questions including roof, floor and pillar safety. Results of previous two-dimensional finite element analysis indicated pillar safety was by no means assured (MSHA, 2008; Pariseau, 2008; Pariseau, 2011). Geometry of barrier pillar mining is limited in two dimensions for example, crosscuts are not seen in vertical cross sections. While three-dimensional analyses are preferred, even moderately sized regions often lead to very large problem sizes that exceed computer capabilities. However, a recent development in finite element modeling of tabular deposits allows for whole mine analysis in three dimensions. This technique involves a dual node - dual mesh concept. Both have been used separately in much earlier work, but are only now used in combination. It is possible to have an estimation of subsidence at a kilometer scale and details of stress, strain and displacement about barrier pillars, main entries and pillars, and so on at a meter scale (Pariseau, 2014). No compromise involving empirical formulas or similar guess work is required. Indeed, all calculations are based on first principles: physical laws, kinematics, and material laws. Effects of joints and in situ variability or uncertainty in strata properties, elastic moduli and strengths, may be included for greater realism. An important objective of the present study is to assess the role of three-dimensional pillar geometry in arriving at conclusions regarding barrier pillar mining versus two-dimensional results."

The Burnaby Mountain Tunnel was an integral part of the Trans Mountain Expansion Project. General Contractor, Kiewit Ledcor TMEP Partnership (KLTP), contracted with McNally Construction to build an underground tunnel between the Burnaby and Westridge Marine terminals under Burnaby Mountain. The pipeline was constructed within a 2.6-kilometre tunnel, eliminating the need to run the pipeline over the mountain and minimizing community impacts. The complexities of this Project led to multiple innovations, including the design of a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) capable of excavating through mixed-faced conditions concurrently thus allowing the Project team to complete the tunnel with limited geotechnical information.

Dozer operators are frequently exposed to whole-body vibration (WBV) during the execution of their work. Occupational exposure to WBV in Indian surface coal mines was evaluated by measuring vibration intensity and duration of exposure. A triaxial accelerometer was placed on the operator seat surface for taking the readings. Based on frequency-weighted root mean square acceleration equivalent to 8-hr shift duration, i.e., (A(8)) all dozer operators have exceeded an Exposure Action Value (EAV) of 0.5 m/s2 , and 90% of dozers did not exceed Exposure Limit Value (ELV) of 1.15 m/s2 . Based on Vibration Dose Value (VDV (8)), all dozer operators have exceeded Exposure Limit Value (EAV) of 9.1 m/s1.75, but no dozer operators have exceeded Exposure Limit Value (ELV) of 21 m/s1.75. Further, an epidemiological study was performed for identifying the extent of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among dozer operators. For the detailed study, 42 dozer operators and 22 controls were selected from 2 surface coal mines. The control group was not exposed to WBV. It was seen from the cross-sectional study that pain in the lower back was predominantly higher (83.33%) in the exposed group when compared with the control group (31.81%). Likewise, pain in the neck (47.61%), shoulder (42.85%), knees (42.85%), and ankle (11.90%) was higher in the exposed group than that of the control group (22.71%, 0%, 45.45%, and 4.54%). A significant observation among the exposed group was that there was degradation in the quality of life. The outcome of the study would assist in monitoring and mitigation of machinery-induced vibration diseases (MIVD) in India and generally applicable to most of the mechanized mines as well. However, comprehensive studies are still needed to enunciate the magnitude extent.

There are several methods (empirical, statistical, and machine learning tools) to calculate blast-induced ground vibration. Still, due to complications in the blasting procedure, under varying blasting loads and strata conditions, it is not easy to predict and simulate blast vibration precisely. Therefore, a study was conducted to simulate the field blast data in Ansys software using explicit dynamics. For this study, monitoring of ground vibration for 20 single hole blasts was carried out. The density of emulsion explosives was in the range of 0.9 to 1.15 g/cc. In the laboratory, rock properties were determined from the rock sample collected from the mine site before blasting. The in-hole velocity of detonation (VoD) and the density of the emulsion explosive were also determined. These parameters were used for numerical analysis to know the ground vibrations at specified points. The results of ground vibration predicted by the model are validated using field data.

The I-35 Capital Expressway (CapEx) Central Drainage Tunnels will serve as a stormwater collection system for the forthcoming I-35 Capital Express Central reconstruction project through downtown Austin, Texas. The schematic level concept design included three tunnels, 10 to 14 ft ID, totaling 26,000 LF. Constructability reviews during design development indicated issues with the concept design including phasing of construction, conicts with future retaining walls, staging area concerns, and signicant mixed face tunneling. The design was updated to mitigate these risks. The revised design includes two tunnels, both 22-ft ID and totaling 33,000 LF, that will be mined almost entirely in rock.

"INTRODUCTION Abstract Tankhouse iron control through application of new treatment technology to mitigate conventional bleeding losses is considered. Implementation is discussed and the treatment economics explored. A representative case is assessed. Treatment benefits and application drivers for specific scenarios are noted. Background Hydrometallurgical ore processing has become a significant metal extraction/production avenue in recent decades. In copper mining; the focus for this examination, around 25% of global primary copper production and nearly 50% of US production result from various hydrothermal leaching extraction approaches coupled to Solvent Extraction/Electrowinning (SX/EW) metal production. Generally such processing is favored over pyrometallurgical processes for lower ore grades and as such is finding growing use and is expected to remain a key processing route looking forward with average world-wide ore grades falling as known ore reserves become exhausted. Target Problem And Motivation In hydrometallurgical processing the production circuit may be thought of as a chain of interlocked recirculation loops (Figure 1). Leaching dissolves the target metal from the ore along with other ore components which contaminate the Pregnant Leach Solution (PLS). Iron is a common component in copper ores and, as a result, occurs fairly ubiquitously in copper Pregnant Leach Solutions (PLS) generated by leaching. Leached components migrate through the production circuit from left to right (Figure 1) through a net combination of chemical and mechanical transport mechanisms. Selectivity at the recirculation loop interfaces tends to retard rejected component migration through the production process. As a result, overall relative contaminant migration fluxes are slower than the target metal (copper) and the contaminants tend to build up relative to copper in the more upstream portions of the processing circuit over time with iron often being a significant contaminant. Further, while copper is continuously removed from the system in appreciable amounts, little contaminant exit occurs and the absolute contaminant amounts and concentrations also increase throughout the EW circuit over time."

The Davis detector cavern was excavated on the 4850 Level of the former Homestake Mine in the mid- 1960s to house a novel neutrino detector developed by Nobel Prize winner Dr. R. Davis. The original cavern was about 9.1 x 16.8 x 9.7 m high, excavated in a Precambrian amphibolite known as the Yates unit and enlarged in 2010. In 2009, the National Science Foundation selected the site for development as a national Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL). This retrospective rock mechanics study of the Davis cavern is intended to inform design of the much larger caverns and laboratory rooms being considered for the same 4850 Level. Provision for rock mass variability, sequential excavation, jointing and wall damage from blasting are included in analyses that were done using two different computer codes and methods (FLAC3D and UTAH3). The results are in agreement with observations and show that cavern stability is indeed the case. The main conclusions are: (1) if conventional scaling of laboratory rock elastic moduli and strengths is done, then 0.25 and 0.50 scale factors are reasonable, (2) measured statistical and spatial variability in rock properties should be incorporated into geomechanical analyses to better reflect reality, (3) discontinuities (“joints”) are essential to reliable analysis of excavation safety and when properly taken into account eliminate the need for empirical “scaling” of laboratory rock properties, (4) major geologic features such as rhyolite dikes and breccia zones may be important to excavation safety at Homestake and should be explicitly represented in analyses and (5) quantifying wall blast damage is important to engineering design of underground excavations.

At Ok Tedi, ore type and SAG feed size distribution vary widely and frequently. This makes control of the SAG mills by application of the power/pressure relationship difficult. Power logic has traditionally been conservative due to power spikes associated with rapid size distribution changes. A new expert system was installed in early 2000. The system incorporates multiple state fuzzy logic to deal with frequent and radical ore type and size variations, along with monitoring of motor temperatures. A short term power spike no longer warrants immediate radical action. This has resulted in increased mill throughput and improved circuit stability.

The results of laboratory characterization of tailpipe emissions for three “clean” engines that meet U.S. EPA Tier 4 final emissions standards were used to assess the viability and effectiveness of repowering existing engines and powering new mobile equipment with those engines as a control strategy for reducing exposure of underground miners to diesel aerosol and criteria gases. The evaluated engines were representative of those that achieve the emission standards through implementation of various in-cylinder emissions control strategies, use of crankcase filtration, and use of three types of exhaust aftertreatment systems: (1) diesel oxidation catalytic converter (DOC), (2) combination of DOC and the full-flow wall flow monolith diesel particulate filter (DPF), or (3) combination of DOC, diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) based selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, and ammonia slip catalyst (ASC). The study showed that the highest reductions in concentrations of diesel aerosols in underground workings, in terms of both mass and number, could be achieved if the engines, preferably in all power classes, are fitted with viable DPF systems. The use of U.S. EPA Tier 4 final engines equipped with DOC and DOC/SCR/ASC systems could help operators to considerably reduce mass, but not number concentrations of aerosols. The emissions of two of the evaluated engines, one equipped with DOC and the other equipped with DOC/DPF systems, were characterized by substantial secondary NO2 emissions that would limit the viability of those engines for underground mining applications. It appears that the catalyst formulations used in the exhaust aftertreatment systems of the “clean” engines marketed to the underground mining industry need to be formulated to minimize the potential for generation of secondary NO2 emissions. The results indicate that the engines fitted with viable SCR/ASC systems present a low-NO2 alternative. All three “clean” engines were found to have low CO output. Therefore, due to nuances associated with the use of diesel-powered mobile equipment in underground mines, special attention needs to be paid to the selection and potentially optimization of “clean” engines for underground mining applications.

The use of a static bath of a heavy liquid of intermediate density between two mineral phases has been employed for beneficiation for over one-hundred years (1-6). In the case of the heavy liquid separation of coal from its included mineral matter, laboratory (3) and commercial (2,4) techniques have employed a halohydrocarbon or mixtures thereof, or solutions of inorganic salts and water with a specific gravity in the range of 2.0 to 1.30. As a laboratory tool, the heavy liquid separation is generally regarded as a standard permitting the "ideal" separation of a product coal and reject mineral matter. Each of the products in this case is polyphase since the separation is only based on apparent specific gravity of the product or reject material. The "Otisca Process" is an anhydrous heavy liquid separation process which employs a parting liquid with certain physical and chemical characteristics which make it particularly advantageous for expanding the laboratory separation process into the realm of commercial coal cleaning. The two key characteristics of the parting liquid are: 1) the heavy liquid does not react significantly with the coal product or reject material, and 2) the liquid permits complete dispersion of the coal product particles throughout the separation bath. The first point, i.e., the lack of liquid coal reaction (7-11), may be cited as one of the major reasons for the failure of other attempts at commercialization of heavy liquid processes. For example, if reaction does occur between the heavy liquid and coal or mineral matter, complete heavy liquid recovery becomes a very expensive complex process. The costs of heavy liquids alone prohibit their loss in the process as will be demonstrated later.

"How Wall Street Darling Molycorp Undermined the U.S. Economy, Degraded our National Security and Distorted the Global Economic Balance and How These Falsehoods Continue to be Promoted Even Today INTRODUCTION & SUMMARY In 2007 the Molycorp Mountain Pass rare earth mine was resurrected from its desert-grave in California by its then-owner Chevron Mining. Responding to elevated rare earth prices Chevron began processing on-site rare earth concentrates left over from past mining operations that were terminated in 1998i. Chinese demand had sparked what was being described as a commodities super-cycleii. Commodity prices were on the move. Wall Street smelled opportunity. In 2008 Goldman Sachs, Pegasus Partners, Resource Capital Funds, Traxys North America LLC and Carint Group LLC acquired the mining assets from Chevron. In an environment of ever-declining ethical standards and regulatory consequences the private capital group and their investment bankers would bring Molycorp to market. Molycorp, with its high powered investment banking team of Morgan Stanley and J.P. Morganiii, easily dominated the contest. Molycorp promoted itself, largely based on its past operating history and proven reserves, as the best company to challenge China’s monopoly control over the production of rare earths: a group of elements critical to most advanced technologies and U.S. defense systemsiv. Most of Wall Street’s hottest investment sectors were dependent on these materials: alternative energy, green technologies, computing, personal communications, advanced electronics and defense systems. By late 2010 there were dozens of prospective rare earth start-up ‘mining companies’ seeking capital. Eventually the number of prospective rare earth mining companies seeking capital exceeded 400, despite the reality that supply requirements of this market were disproportionally small when compared to other natural resource sectorsv. In the world of finance ‘smart money’ picks the winners. Consequently just twovi projects attracted nearly all of the capital (Molycorp and Lynas). Wall street picked Molycorpvii. This paper will primarily focus on Molycorp. By early 2010 the words “Molycorp” and “Rare Earths” electrified many people in the mining industry, most non-Chinese manufacturing technology companies, U.S. & allied defense contractors, technocrats in the U.S. national security community and eager investors across most of the world’s stock markets. It was the hottest story of the yearviii. The financial, technology and defense press coverage verged on euphoric: heaping fuel on fuel until the highly combustible Molycorp-pyre cast a long shadow over all of its rivalsix. When the IPO match was lit the spectacular flaming pyre sucked all of the oxygen out of the rare earth spacex. Molycorp was ranked the most lucrative IPO of 2010, resulting in record breaking profits to its private investors and massive returns for its early stock holding investors."

Hydrolyzable surfactants such as fatty acids and amines undergo, in addition to micellisation and precipitation, various associative interactions in aqueous solutions to form ion molecular complexes such as acid-soap, dimers etc. depending upon the solution conditions such as pH. The interaction of these collector species with the mineral surface and with other dissolved species in solution will play a significant role in determining the interfacial processes such as adsorption and flotation. Marked differences in the hydrophobicity imparted to the mineral surface depending upon the solution conditions such as Ph can be attributed to possible differences in surface activities of the above complexes. This aspect of solution chemistry of flotation systems is discussed here for two widely used collectors namely, oleic acid and dodecylamine. Equilibrium species distribution diagrams based on the available literature .data and on estimates of energy of interactions between molecules, have been obtained for oleic acid and dodecylamine solutions.

Comminution is an integral part of the mineral extraction process. However, the influence of the comminution method (ball and rod mills) on silica and magnetite particle shapes has not been substantially investigated. Shape parameters for fractions of -250+212, -150+125, and -106+75 μm sizes were examined utilizing a scanning electron microscope and a Clemex vision PE image analysis system. The silica particles displayed higher elongation and flatness parameter values for rod mill products, but roundness and relative width parameter values of rod mill products are less than that of the ball mill products. Magnetite particle elongation and flatness parameter values of ball mill products in fraction sizes of -250+212 and -106+75 μm are larger than rod mill products, but roundness and relative width parameter values of ball mill products are smaller than rod-mill products, but for the -150+125 μm size range the result is converse. Furthermore, particle elongation and flatness increased with decreasing particle sizes of silica, whereas, roundness and relative width decreased for both Ball and Rod Mills. In case of magnetite, ball mill products displayed an increase of flatness and particle elongations with decreasing particle sizes but flatness increased and roundness and relative width decreased. Similarly for rod mills, magnetite fractions of -150+125 μm were found to have the largest values of elongation and flatness. INTRODUCTION Comminution alters the size and shape, causes lattice distortion, changes chemical composition, surface area, surface-free energy, and polymorphic transformation of all materials. The quantity and quality of such changes depend on specifications of the material feedstock, the type of mill being utilized, the specific energy input, ambient temperature, and environmental pressure [1]. The shape difference between the milled products depends on different grinding mechanisms and the respective breakage principles that these mechanisms depend on [2, 3]. With decreasing particle sizes, the nature of the particle surface become crucial [1]. The influence of the breakage technique has been found to be non-trivial and heavily dependent on the type of grinding mill used for particle size reduction [4]. Shape is an important industrial parameter for predicting particle behavior in downstream processes. The shape parameter affects the way particles burn, compact, are recovered, flow in fluids, sinter, float, agglomerate, fluidize, interact with pulmonary tissue, cut, abrade, react with chemicals, form structural materials, and retain and permit fluids to flow [5, 6]. The distribution of particle sizes and shapes are important for mining, civil and chemical, pharmaceutical, and various other industries with interest in the population modeling of atmospheric dusts, smoke, and grit [1, 3, 6]. The shape parameter not only affects the chemical, physical, surface properties of particles but is also important for downstream processes [5, 6]. Image analysis has been found to provide detailed information about size and shape of the particles and can be used for the control of product quality [4].

The design of most underground support systems has largely been based upon empirical rules. This design method has proven to be satisfactory in most cases as witnessed by the number of successfully completed works. However, the adequacy of this approach to the developing technology of ground support systems associated with deep excavation has not been substantiated. In cases where the material has definite time-dependent behavior parameters, rules of past experience become extremely vague and conservative. The Spokane Mining Research Center is currently engaged in extensive research to develop rational design methods for underground structures which will account for the many interacting factors such as in-situ properties of the rock mass, excavation methods, proposed types of support system, construction sequence, and environmental variables. In 1971, the Minerals Division of The Superior Oil Company acquired exploration rights to an unpatented claim group in the Superior (Pioneer), Arizona mining district, lying west of the Concentrator fault. This major post-mineral fault displaces the Magma vein-fault, which is mined in the Magma Mine at Superior, Arizona. The Magma vein-fault and the enclosing section of pre-mineral rocks consisting of Paleozoic and younger Precambrian sediments and diabase, is overlain by a thick section of post-mineral rocks, consisting of the Gila conglomerate, the Apache Leap dacite, and the Whitetail conglomerate. Geologic information on the thickness and attitudes of the rocks obtained from previous diamond drilling indicated that the section of post-mineral rocks might be from 3,000 to over 4,010 feet thick in the target area. (Figure 1) The Magma vein-fault is a steeply dipping vein which has produced nearly a billion dollars of copper, zinc, silver, and gold. It has been mined continuously for nearly 10,000 feet along the strike and nearly 5,000, feet vertically down the dip. It ranges from less than a foot to over 50 feet wide and contains sulfide mineralization con¬sisting of pyrite, chalcopyrite, bornite, and chalcocite.
