The meteorological conditions in South Africa are not conducive to the effective dispersion of air pollutants. In the light of this, and because of the magnitude, concentration, and future growth potential of the metallurgical industry, control of air pollution is essential. Methods of abatement are discussed for each branch of the metallurgical Industry, as well as for open-cast mining and bulk ore storage. Some recommendations are made regarding potentially rewarding research and development.

This paper describes the performance of a Robbins 52R Boxhole Borer from its introduction into the mine in July 1975 until late in 1977. As indicated by the costs involved, the performance has increased considerably and is expected to be even better once further envisaged modifications have been made. The average cost for the first half of 1977 was R275 per metre bored as against an average of R628 for 1975.

The paper describes how the level of the water-table was reduced as a result of increased pumping of water from the mine. Because such a condition in an area where there is compactable material above solid dolomite results In surface movement, steps were taken to restore the water-table to its former level. These included the return of water underground via a sinkhole and boreholes, and the piping of water from another mine.

Environmental activists have targeted the mining industry in an attempt to prevent development, which has resulted in the industry's becoming defensive and retro-active. This paper argues that mining managements should go on the offensive and champion the environment through leadership in environmental policy and research and development, rather than reacting to anti-mining campaigns. In the formulation of an environmental policy for the mining industry, a clear understanding of the concept of sustainable development is of paramount importance.

The German steelmaking industry has come up with a novel solution to the problem of waste plastics-grind them into particles and use them in the steelmaking process. Plastics make ideal agents for removing oxygen from iron ore in blast furnaces, and save on oil and coal as well. The aim of replacing heavy oil and coal with plastics in blast furnaces is to use them as reducing agents as well as an additional energy source.

This paper gives a brief review of the main environmental and ecological problems of slimes dams, both those created in the immediate vicinity of the dams and those influencing the region or catchment. Methods of dealing with these problems and influences on existing dams are described. The difficulties encountered in the growing of grass on steep slopes are explained, and, after an analysis of the conditions, a plea is made for flatter slopes on the sides of dams.

The basic tendencies on raising the fire safety of the conveyor belts that are retraced in their world production are shown.

The paper reviews the effects of fast-neutron irradiation on the tensile properties of austenitic stainless steels at irradiation temperatures of less than 400°C, using, as an example, work carried out at Pelindaba on an AISI 316 type steel produced in South Africa. Damage produced in these steels at higher irradiation temperatures and fluences is also briefly discussed. The paper concludes with a discussion of some methods of overcoming or decreasing the effects of irradiation damage.

As the price of gold increased, so did the viability of mining previously abandoned unpay areas of Stilfontein Mine. After an assessment to confirm the profitability of mining these areas, it was necessary to re-establish access-ways such as haulages, cross-cuts, and travelling ways. Openingup is a labour-intensive, relatively slow operation, and attempts were made to mechanizeand speed it up. Some of the techniques applied and the results achieved, whether successful or not, are discussed.

The coal-preparation techniques used in South Africa over the past ten years are reviewed, the term preparation being taken to refer to processes involving beneficiation techniques. The success of the preparation methods adopted can be gauged from the fact that, although South African coals are generally of a fairly low quality, the country is producing coals both that are used locally for the raising of steam and for metallurgical purposes, and that compete successfully on world export markets.

I also wish to add my congratulations and good wishes to the many you have already received on this memorable occasion. Seventy-five years is indeed a good age and the achievements of your Institute certainly justify this special celebration. South Africa owes her present prosperity largely to the technological ability and determination of her own people. Members of the Institute contributed in large measure to this great development of our country and through the years have upheld their high reputation for scientific integrity, dynamic enterprise and dedicated service. It was their knowledge which provided the key to unlocking the mineral wealth which lay dormant for countless ages. The history of world mining dates back many centuries. We know of the mercury mines of Spain, the tin mines of Cornwall and the zinc mines of Poland, but it was not until colonization of the western hemisphere started in about 1500 that mining of any consequence began in North America. It is true that the peoples of South America and Mexico had accumulated wealth out of gold and silver, but industrialized mining was not a feature of these agrarian cultures. The mining wealth that eventually developed in North America was based on advances in the technology of processing minerals and served as an incentive to people in other new countries. Big mines were opened elsewhere in the world. From Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil, Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Rhodesia, Australia, Burma and India, to name but a few, there has been a steadily increasing production of an expanding range of minerals and metals. By the middle of the 20th century the trend was to increase the production and use of such comparatively uncommon metals as cobalt, nickel, titanium, and others, and a great mining rush started to search for, and develop, the deposits of uranium, and related radio-active minerals. It is worth pausing a few minutes to reflect that most of early mining was based on the recovery of virgin metals like gold and silver or easily treated high grade ores of copper, tin and zinc. Today, much of this type of mining would be regarded as picking the eyes out of the mine. With the development of improved ore separating, ore concentration and recovery processes, we developed into bulk mining and bulk treatment and in South Africa we have some very big mines, also outside the gold mining industry at Phalaborwa, for instance. Mining techniques are applied which compare with the best in the world. These large mines could only develop because of the perfection of new concentrating techniques and, of course, because of the development of markets. We have mentioned nickel and cobalt. These names were given to those mischievous mining sprites called nickels and kobolds to whom the suspicious miners ascribed their inability to smelt copper from copper nickel or arsenious copper ores. In South Africa, the presence of minerals was known to the modern Western world as far back as 1497 when Vasco da Gama found the native 'strandlopers' at the St. Helena Bay wearing copper rings. In 1669, after the British East India Company had formed their settlement, they employed miners and assayers in prospecting for minerals and in 1685 found traces of copper in the copper mountain of Namaqualand where some 170 years later a rich deposit of copper was to be opened up. In mid-1984, SAIMM reached an agreement with the South African Region of what is now the Institute of Metals to combine the physical-metallurgical activities of the two organizations. This was the outcome of several years of informal collaboration, and followed the recognition in 1982 by the SAIMM Council that applied physical metallurgy had grown in importance to South African industry and should have a place alongside the two areas already well-established for SAIMM commitment and support-mining and extractive metallurgy.

The past ten years or so have seen many changes in the methods and approach adopted for projects in the metallurgical and mining industry in South Africa. These changes have led to an increased use by operating companies of the project and construction management services offered by engineering contracting companies. For a variety of reasons, this development has been slower in the metallurgical industry than in other areas of production, but that industry is also now showing an increasing trend in this direction.

The cycloned gravitated tailings backfill system, also referred to as a soft or low density fill, has been implemented at Vaal Reefs. Inhibiting the success of the system was the problem of shrinkage after placement. The problem was overcome by a pressure fill technique which eliminated settlement, contained costs and allowed remote placement. The technique involves the preinstallation of disposable pipes which are filled cyclically until a residual pressure of 0,5 bar of active support is generated in the filled paddock.

The scope of this paper is confined to gas-fluidized beds in pyrometalurgical applications. After considering the general characteristics of these fluidized beds, the author deals with their potential applications, using the following processes, which are currently under investigation, as examples: pretreatment of chromite, prereduction of manganese-ore and iron-ore fines, roasting and prereduction of ilmenite, and roasting and pyrolysis of gold-bearing pyrite. He concludes that fluidized beds are potentially of great benefit to the metallurgical industry, although much developmental work remains to be done.
