Outotec?s direct leaching process is an atmospheric leaching process for sulphidic zinc concentrates. The direct leaching process, based on special leaching reactors developed by Outokumpu, is the most economical way to produce electrolytic zinc. The production scale applications of the process realized so far are in use at Boliden?s Kokkola and Odda zinc plants. A new full-scale application of Outotec?s direct leaching process will be started in 2008 in China. The process is integrated into the existing production plant, replacing part of the old production facilities by modern technology. Besides high zinc extraction the plant expansion and modernization offers also indium recovery, iron precipitation and solution purification processes. The process equipment includes tailor-made reactors designed on the basis of the work and experience of Outotec research centre. Low-grade, complex mineral deposits have resulted in the need for complicated large-throughput processing plants delivering increased productivity, reliability, and utilization, together with reducing operational costs. Complex mineralogy has resulted in complicated process flow sheets designed to recover minerals as efficiently as possible. In addition, the remote location of many minerals¬-processing plants, continuously rising energy costs, and fierce competition pose significant challenges to the modern mine, compounded by a global scarcity of qualified and experienced operational personnel. Over the last decade the Internet and automation technologies have undergone major advancements. Automation technologies, solutions, and concepts that existed, but were considered risky or unreliable prior to the year 2000, have now gained acceptance and matured. Furthermore, new technologies and different collaboration schemes have appeared, offering innovative solutions to the mining industry to address many of the challenges described. These advancements in reliable remote systems that access technology through the Internet provide significant opportunity to support mining operations, enhance process performance, provide engineering services, and proactively anticipate and execute maintenance services. This paper references a global survey of automation trends in the mining industry and the potential for an intelligent collaborative environment using automation technologies to exploit opportunities in operating the plant of the future, increasing effectiveness, and reducing operational costs. A variety of possibilities are described, including asset management solutions, remote access capabilities, performance monitoring solutions, advanced process control technologies, and the formation of an intelligent collaborative environment. A real example where this technology is used to support the operation and maintenance at a cement plant in Egypt is given to underpin the concepts described in this paper.

Palabora Mining Company is operating a copper block cave mine in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. The mine was developed in the late nineties with a target ore reserve of 220 million tonnes of carbonatite at 0.69% copper. At 30,000 tonnes per day the operation had an estimated life of mine of approximately 23 years. Cave induced open pit side wall failure occurred in late 2004 with 130 million tonnes of waste reporting to the bottom of the open pit. This failure resulted in potential sterilization and dilution of the ore reserve and subsequent reduction in life of mine. Physical and numerical modelling indicated potential losses of up to 30% of the original ore reserves. Cave Management tools based on throughput principles are utilized to manage the failed waste ingress and ensure an optimum life of mine. Extracting the maximum rate possible, as soon as draw points are commissioned, with the view of achieving the highest production in the short term, is any mining operation?s goal as more money is required sooner. This approach, of course, improves the cash flow but presents a risk in the cave propagation profile as overall draw control is compromised. At Palabora it is evident from a Mineral Resource Throughput Management (MRTM) point of view that maximum production in the short term is not the solution. If high production rates are achieved and the profile of the cave is not manage correctly, this results in failed waste reporting to draw points earlier with adverse effects on grade. This would effectively and significantly shorten Palabora?s Life of Mine. The applications of good MRTM principles are required to assist the value chain for sustained profitability. The process commenced with change management paving the way for a better understanding and a holistic view for all role players.

In the wake of the financial crisis that affected world markets in 2002, there has been an increasing international focus on corporate governance. Various corporate governance codes of practice have been introduced, such as the Sarbanes-Oxley legislation in the USA, the Combined Code in the UK, and King III in South Africa. This focus on corporate governance has increased since the most recent financial crisis in 2008, the effects of which are still being felt world-wide. In the mining and minerals industry, reliable metal accounting is essential to sound corporate governance and is also becoming a focus of increased attention and concern, particularly as the figures generated by the metal accounting system feed directly into the financial accounts of mining companies. Mass measurement, sampling, and analysis provide the input data for the metal accounting system and sound corporate governance requires that the procedures used are based on best practice and that the data generated is accurate and handled correctly, transparently, and consistently to produce the accounting reports. The AMIRA Code of Practice for Metal Accounting has been widely adopted in the industry as a means to achieve this, and the compilers of the Code have conducted numerous metal accounting audits at operations, both in South Africa and abroad. "Flotation plant design, construction and start-up can be challenging tasks, because multiple factors and disciplines have to be combined in an efficient manner, in order to execute a project that meets the technical, financial and timeframe expectations. Key considerations that need to be addressed when designing a flotation plant are process requirements, equipment integrability, automation, and up- and downstream processes/designs. Furthermore, several other lifecycle factors need to be considered, such as servicing and maintainability, operational costs, future expansions and decommissioning, among others. To address these challenges, Outotec has developed a new approach to designing flotation plants that targets eliminating most of the inherent risks that can be found in these types of projects. The new Outotec® plant is a fully modular approach in which the above-mentioned challenges have been taken into consideration in the design phase. As a result, the cPlant concept can give several benefits for new and experienced companies involved in the minerals processing business, such as lower risk investments, fast and cost-efficient flotation plant delivery, faster ramp-up period, easy plant expansions, fully automated processes and operation and maintenance ease. As well, dismantling and transportation of the cPlant to a new location is easy and fast, hence the new cPlant concept makes possible to exploit small, short-lifespan ore deposits and also retreat old tailings ponds that might contain valuable minerals and where the ore quantities are limited. MunroPapers:Corporate exploration strategies by MacKenzie, B.W.The Engel Simulator and the search for uranium by Griffiths, J.C. and Singer, D.A.The Chairman opened the session by tracing the changes which have taken place in the exploration field since the days of the lone prospector who relied upon his individual skills and to a large extent on luck. The deposits which now remain to be discovered are better covered and are of lower grade. A much greater team effort, involving geoscientists and engineers, is required. The gamble is thus much greater -not only are the probabilities of failure still significant but the consequences are more severe. A recent Canadian survey indicated that expenditures of between two and nine million dollars on regional exploration programs are required to locate one significant deposit.The Chairman went on to say that these facts have led companies to regard exploration as another form of investment and to treat it accordingly. This had placed exploration in the context of corporate strategics and structures, which was the subject of the first paper of the session.In introducing his paper, Dr B. W. MacKenzie said that the paper suggested a decision framework for exploration planning. Initially the environment is analyzed to define observable and relevant economic characteristics. The terms of reference for exploration planning and the appropriate allocation of capital and skills are then established in the light of corporate objectives and growth alternatives. With the aid of this information and in the light of profit and corporate risk criteria, exploration strategies can be selected.Dr MacKenzie went on to say that the usefulness of the concept and criteria outlined in his paper depended critically upon three characteristics of any particular economic environment, namely, the return resulting from an economic discovery, the unit discovery Cost and the probability of making an economic discovery. He then showed by means of a case history relative to the Canadian Shield and Cordilleran areas that these three characteristics could, in fact, be evaluated for regions with reasonable histories of mineral activity.The first contributor to the discussion of the paper, Mr Alfred Weiss, mentioned that his group had been involved in exploration modelling for some ten years and were thus particularly interested in the paper. He went on to say that they had experienced greatest difficulty with reconnaissance programs and that he sensed that these difficulties were also present with the methodology which had been outlined. Mr Weiss asked Dr MacKenzie how he would deal with such situations when no information was available but where there was the potential for both exploration and discovery. Dr Mackenzie agreed that the lack of information was a very severe limitation and said that at the present time his methodology probably did not provide a basis for breaking down the broad geological regions he considered into areas for further assessment."

A novel mathematical model is presented which describes the behaviour of beds of particles, of uniform size and shape but different densities, during autogenous separations. The approach used in the formulation of the dispersion model is a phenomenological one based on a statistical view, which leads to a diffusion-like representation of the autogenous-separation process. Although the model currently considers only density-related phenomena, it accounts quantitatively not only for the density-segregation aspects of the process but for the interactions between the particles. Quantitative predictions of the dispersion model are compared with the results obtained in tests using a specially constructed experimental batch jig, and it is shown that the model provides an adequate quantitative description of the process for particles of uniform size and shape. It is pointed out that, for the description of more complicated autogenous separations, a more rigorous formulation of the particle drag and density-segregation terms will have to be incorporated into the dispersion model. Nonetheless it is concluded that the model as presented in this paper provides not only a novel insight into the mechanisms of autogenous separations but a means by which to analyse similar systems.

Computer programs which rely on the assumption of linear, elastic rockmass behaviour have been used routinely for many years in the South African mining industry to determine the stresses arising in the vicinity of mining excavations. A description is given of the theoretical background and novel solution techniques used in the recently developed MINSIM-D boundary element program. Features of the program include the ability to analyse multiple interacting reef planes at arbitrary orientation to one another, slippage on fault planes and the effects of backfill placement in mined areas. Incremental mining sequences can be modelled, and digitizer and front-end routines have been written to assist in the capture of mining outlines and general problem specifications. A brief indication is given of design problems for which MINSIM-D is appropriate, as well as some future extensions of the system.

Ceramic filtration plates are used for dewatering slurries with high solid concentrations and particles in the size range of 30 μm to 150 μm. After extensive operating times, the ceramic filter plates at Minas Rio in Brazil begin to blind due to the precipitation of barium sulphate on the surface of the ceramic filter plate, which reduces the overall efficiency of the filtration process. Further research is needed to identify the barium precipitate phases on the blocked filter plates and its thermodynamic and kinetic behaviour in the system. A crystallography analysis was performed on the sample and the results showed that there are two different sets of precipitates formed on the filter plate: grey crystals which were large and scatted on the filter plate and red micro crystals that covered the entire surface of the filter plate. The red microcrystals on the sample were identified with XRD, which indicated that the sample contained barium sulphate in the mineral form barite. Experiments were conducted to determine the optimum conditions under which barium precipitation will occur. The conditions tested as a possible driving force for barium sulphate precipitation were the effect of temperature, pH and concentration. The pH and temperature ranges were pushed to both the lower and higher boundaries. The effect of temperatures as low as 15oC was studied and pH levels of 7 and upwards. The first nuclei started appearing at a pH of 7 but significant growth is promoted at higher pH levels. The X-Ray diffraction analysis confirmed the phase of the precipitates formed, and the orthorhombic crystallographic structure formed is a characteristic of barium sulphate. Mining professionals recognize the need to continuously evaluate and refine mine planning standards and scheduling. We must examine our current reality, and evaluate the following: •How well do our planning standards represent the actual mining process? •To what extent do they support the requirements of the downstream mining activities? •How we apply them to operational management and control? In most operations, mine-planning standards are global averages. Little differentiation is madein quantifying key planning variables. Often standards used in the long-term, are applied to the short-term, and the standards and scheduling precedents are only reviewed occasionally. Mine-planning standards applied to production schedules are often only focused on the management of functional mining performance, and play no role in managing the requirements of down stream processing. Many mining operations are characterized by high levels of fluctuation, and typically incorporate a wide range of factors and adjustments to compensate for deviations from performance targets, in mining operations as well as for the other business areas. The reason for using global averages is because of a lack of understanding of the causes of deviations that occur through the process, and the impact that they may have on the performance of the business as a whole. Average standards and factors are often used to quantify the variability in a system. From these average values, measurement standards and performance targets are derived for the planning and execution environments. During the execution of a plan/schedule there will be deviation in actual performance and the planned ‘average’ standards. In reality the ‘average’ conditions seldom occur and the impact of variability and interdependency are seldom constant or predictable. The predictability of variability and interdependency is further complicated by the fact that mining conditions have a role to play in the actual production performance, and they too are variable. By developing the throughput knowledge of our production systems, we can better understand the nature of variability and the interdependency within the systems as well as the impact of interdependency between the links in our production chains. With this knowledge, planning standards and scheduling precedents can be better defined and sensibly differentiated. This will improve planning and management of ore utilization, mining production and the effectiveness of processing. As a result the business will be more stable and predictable and business performance will be improved. The purpose of this paper is to describe: •At a high level, the scope for refining and differentiation in mine planning standards, and incorporating geological and plant parameters into mine scheduling. This will improve planning and scheduling and the overall performance of the mine. Given our current level of scientific knowledge and the technological tools at our disposal we should be able to plan and schedule production so that we can manage pro-actively and improve business performance. In doing so we can also improve reconciliation and value tracking through mining and processing •The flexibility and functionality of the XPAC planning and scheduling tool that will enable a throughput management approach.

The paper presents a basic summary of the approach to hydraulic scale-model tests as may typically be applicable to slurry flow situations. A case study is presented illustrating how hydraulic scale-model tests can be of significant benefit in evaluating the performance of novel or unproven slurry handling equipment. In this case the equipment tested was a fan-shaped expansion piece used to spread the discharge from a launder over the full width of a dewatering screen. The tests showed that the device did indeed distribute the slurry flow both in terms of volume and solids mass, but not perfectly uniformly. Unfortunately the equipment was not taken beyond the model test phase. The scale-model test approach did, however, prove to be very useful as it is considered to have provided a good indication of the expected performance of the full-size unit. Significantly, this was achieved at very low cost compared to the cost of installing the device into the proposed plant and having to later change it out for an alternative or live with the less than optimal performance. The paper illustrates the value that can derive from applying hydraulic scale-model testing techniques to evaluating the performance of new or unusual slurry handling equipment. There is particular value in situations that do not lend themselves to numerical modelling.

Utilisation of lower-grade (<60 per cent Fe) resources, not utilised in the current products, is crucial to ensure optimal resource utilisation and maintaining/improving future profit margins by reclassifying low-grade material to ore. The purpose of the Sishen Expansion Project (?SEP?) is therefore to investigate the technical and financial viability of producing up to an additional 10 Mtpa of new products at Sishen from material currently classified as low-grade materials. Jigging technology has progressed to a point where Sishen?s 50 to 60 per cent Fe run of mine (?ROM?) material, once considered as waste, can be beneficiated to produce a saleable 64 per cent Fe product. This has been confirmed through appropriate beneficiation testwork. Consequently, Sishen can now produce saleable product from material not currently included in the resource definition, increasing the resource base of the mine significantly and ensuring higher resource utilisation. Mine Planning utilised the geological models to produce detail planning schedules, reflecting the current and SEP plants separately, optimised to comply with product specifications of both the current and SEP plants and to confirm the viability of the low-grade resources identified as SEP feed material. The SEP products specifications have been derived by optimally matching iron ore market requirements with the revised resource base. A 64.0 per cent Fe lump product and a 63.5 per cent Fe fine product are the optimal SEP products. The SEP plant will be able to produce 10Mtpa at an average yield of 60 per cent and a lump to fine ratio of 62 to 38. The plant consists of five major sections namely crushing, material preparation, beneficiation, final product handling and quality control services. Maximum integration with the current Sishen plant was considered. Kumba currently has an agreement with Transnet to rail up to 23.5 Mtpa through the Sishen Saldanha Iron Ore Export Channel (?IOEC?). Transnet and Sishen Iron Ore Company have signed a Definitive Agreement that deals with the expansion of IOEC?s capacity, which increases Kumba?s entitlement from 23.5Mtpa to 35.0Mtpa. The detailed enviro-legal impact assessments for the SEP indicated that the project has low enviro-legal risk as a result of it being a brownfields project incorporated into the current Sishen operations.

The problem of direct-current plasma arc behaviour, interaction, and dynamics is considered in the context of metallurgical DC arc furnace applications. Particular attention is paid to the transient flow behaviour of arc systems. A mathematical formulation of the physics used to describe the arc system is presented, and includes the spatial and temporal evolution of fluid flow, heat transfer, and electromagnetism. Based on this formulation, a numerical model is developed using a finite difference approach on a regular cartesian grid in both two and three dimensions, with a special focus on robust stability, high resolution modelling, and high performance. A collection of results produced using the numerical model to study pilot plant-scale furnaces is then presented. These address a range of process and design variables and their effect on the numerical model?s results. Where possible, the qualitative behaviour of the model is compared to available experimental data. A number of novel effects and phenomena are seen in the dynamic behaviour of the DC plasma arc model for both single and multiple arc systems, which may lead to improved understanding, control, and manipulation of such systems where they occur in industrial applications. Mineral commodity prices comprise one of the key criteria in the selection of mining stocks. We contend that of the three principal elements of mineral commodity prices, spot price, forward price and long-term price, one has a greater impact on the share valuation processes used by investors. This research paper examines the extent to which each of these elements influences the valuation process. The intention is to provide investors in mining stocks with a greater understanding of how fluctuations of commodity prices over time affect the prices of the mining stocks they hold, or intend to sell or buy. Three mineral commodities, gold, silver, and copper, were used as case studies, since market data on these commodities is readily available in the public domain. Nine market indices covering all three mineral commodities were selected. These are based on clearly defined criteria with the intention of eliminating ambiguity and to test for correlation with the three sets of mineral commodity prices. Nine mining companies, which were not the primary drivers of the relevant indices employed in the study, were used to validate the results obtained from the indices in order to avoid duplication of the same correlation during cross-checking. Each commodity price was adjusted for operating costs. For each market index, an average operating cost was calculated from the companies comprising its basket, while each company?s annual operating costs were used for the stocks of the individual companies examined. The data was collected for the period January 2004 to October 2010. This period was further split up into three sub-periods to account for the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) period that started in mid-2008. We conclude that mining stock prices are correlated with mineral commodity prices, but with spot and forward prices exhibiting stronger correlations than long-term price. This finding should be useful for evaluation purposes. Where cash flow methodologies such as discounted cash flow or earnings per share are used to value ordinary shares and commodity prices are required to estimate future cash flows, the findings suggest that spot prices should be used as opposed to long-term prices. The work reported in this paper is part of a current MSc research study at the University of the Witwatersrand.

In this paper, which is aimed to serve as a review article, first of all a breakdown of the earth?s total water reserves is given. The usage areas of water in the mining industry are mentioned and these uses are briefly outlined, together with the main pollution potential of each. According to this, most of the water (almost 80% of it) is utilized in processing. Later on, probable damages that the mining would give to groundwater as a result of acid mine drainage, heavy metal pollution, euthrophication and deoxygenation is described. Finally, the measures and controls that should be taken against water contamination in mines are presented.

The Hillendale mine (situated between Richards Bay and Empangeni) and Mineral Separation Plant were approved in 2000. The smelter, just outside Empangeni, consists of two 36 MW DC arc furnaces that were commissioned in 2003. Experiences gained during the initial commissioning of the furnaces proved valuable in later commissioning work, as shown by the increase in ramp-up rates. The capacity of the plant is 250 kt/a TiO2 slag and 145 kt/a of pig iron.

The metallurgical response of a difficult to treat coal and an easy to treat coal orebody were investigated in terms of the coal yield and the coal quality in a basic coal recovery flowsheet. The purpose of this paper is to show trends and derive principles for the treatment of different coal types. This investigation entailed using the LIMN simulator to simulate the metallurgical response by varying the plant operational parameters. The controllable plant variables investigated were: ?Cyclone size ?Screen and hydro-cyclone cut points ?Medium cut density ?Feed particle size distribution.

"The creation of mine excavations alters the stress distribution in the surrounding rock mass. In modern mining, resin-grouted rockbolts are used as a means of support in order to redistribute stresses and reestablish equilibrium in the rock mass. The success of resin-grouted rockbolting depends on the design of the system and the correct installation of the support units.The support design and rockbolt installation procedure at a platinum mine in the Bushveld Complex were investigated. A number of issues that resulted in poor installation were identified, including resin admixture, incorrect length and orientation of support holes, over- or under-spinning of the resin, and incorrect rockbolt tensioning. The support design used at the mine was reviewed and its limitations identified. A number of recommendations were made for optimizing the support design by reducing the diameter of the drill bit and reducing the length of the support holes. These changes will enable the mine to use different combinations of resin capsules. Implementation of the proposed changes will lead to a significant reduction in the cost of installation per support hole, as well as improve productivity and safety.IntroductionThe creation of any mine excavation disturbs the virgin state of stress in the Earth’s crust. This results in stress concentrations that interfere with the stability of the rock mass surrounding the excavation. It is essential to modify the internal behaviour of the rock mass surrounding excavations in order to reinforce the ground and stabilize excavations. Resin-grouted rockbolts are extensively used for this purpose. Esterhuizen (2014) stated that when effectively installed, the rockbolt exerts a clamping force and a bonding strength that keeps the rock mass together. This increases the cohesive strength of all discontinuities in the rock mass and enhances the stability of the excavation. Poorly designed and installed ground support is ineffective and constitutes a safety hazard. It is therefore crucial for every mine to ensure that any form of ground support is designed and installed correctly. This research evaluates the installation of resign-grouted rockbolts and identifies challenges and solutions for improved safety as observed at an operating hard rock mine. The support design used at the mine was reviewed and the design parameters optimized. The outcomes will enhance the efficiency of support and minimize the costs associated with the installation of resingrouted rockbolts."

This paper discusses pilot and laboratory-scale metallurgical test work conducted on bulk samples from a low grade heavy mineral deposit and provides an overview of basic practical metallurgical techniques applied to ascertain the suitability of existing production plants to process material from this orebody. Previous investigations have shown this specific orebody to be more challenging in terms of mineral beneficiation as it has a high gangue mineral content. Test work was conducted on targeted stratigraphic units based on lithology and assay results to enable identification of the stratigraphic units portraying quality issues. Unit specific metallurgical pilot work has never been conducted on any of the RBM orebodies and is a new field currently being explored. During this investigation focus was placed on potential quality and yield issues for ilmenite product, with particular reference to CaO quality. A basic evaluation of zircon and rutile separability was also conducted. The test work was conducted using a comparative baseline methodology with metallurgical test work methods specifically aiming at mimicking the existing production plant as closely as possible. This enabled not only the likely metallurgical performance to be assessed but also indicated whether current plant design would be suitable to process the low grade ore types into products of acceptable quality at acceptable yields. The methods and findings discussed in this paper indicate that although there is considerable variation between different units, a blended feed can be successfully processed. With unit specific metallurgical data applied to the existing geological block model, expected yields and recoveries using current plant designs could be predicted.
