FINANCE The annual accounts, which follow this report, reflect a healthy position and show that measures taken by Council over the last few years to boost income have been successful. A higher income was needed not only to meet rising costs but also so that the services provided by the Institute for its members could be expanded. This year's income of R55 025 showed a further increase compared with last year's figure of R48 307. Income from subscriptions was higher mainly owing to an increased number of Company Affiliates, and this is indicative of the support given by mining and metallurgical companies to the good work being done by the Institute. Further sales of publications of the symposia held over the last few years again made a useful contribution to income of R4560. The first Winter School held in 1973 yielded a surplus of R7495 after the expenses had been deducted from the income received from registration fees. The cost of administering the Institute increased by R2212 compared with the previous year. Included in this was a donation of R1000 to the A.S. & T.S. Trust Fund. The cost of publishing and printing the Journal increased by R2034, but advertising and extraneous sales of the Journal were higher, with the result that the net cost of the

FINANCE The annual accounts, which follow this report, indicate that income again exceeded expenditure by a margin of R21 410 (last year R28 524). This year's income of R71 184 showed a further increase compared with last year's figure of R55 025. Costs, however, also in¬creased, and it is calculated that, excluding non-recurrent costs, the cost of running the Institute in¬creased by R6 654 from R25 501 to R33 155 for the current year. The main increases were involved in secretarial fees, stationery and print¬ing, and in publication of the Journal. All indications are that costs will continue to rise, and we have been advised that the A.S. & T.S. will be increasing their secretarial fees by 25 per cent in the year ahead to meet their rising costs. This year's surplus was derived entirely from the revenue from sales of publications (R13 644) and a surplus from the 1974 Winter School (RIO 654). There can be no certainty that revenue from these sources can be repeated each year. Our funds are in a satisfactory position because of these worth¬while activities, but the administrat¬ion of the Institute should not de¬pend on them. Council will accord¬ingly have to give consideration in the year ahead to an upward adjust¬ment of subscriptions to meet rising costs.

The aim of this investigation is the evaluation of optimising the Shahroud copper ore beneficiation plant near the Iranian city of Shahroud, by means of a sensor-based ore sorter applying X-ray transmission technology. Currently, this plant’s feed capacity of 52t/h produces 0.5t/h copper concentrate with a grade of 30% and copper recovery of 85% from a feed grade of 0.36%. By applying an X-ray transmission-based (XRT) sorter, it is possible to preconcentrate the feed and remove the gangue materials before entering the plant, enabling the production rate of concentrate to be increased. In this study, the obtained representative sample from the plant was preconcentrated in particle size of - 75+10mm by using the X-ray sorter, thus the concentrate with Cu grade of 0.85% was obtained. Therefore, by using of X-ray sorter the Cu grade of plant feed was increased to 0.48%. By increasing the feed grade from 0.36% to 0.48%, and considering a Cu recovery of 85%, the production rate will be increased from 0.48t/h to 0.61t/h. My opportunity to serve as President of the prestigious Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) was made possible by an Anglo American scholarship 39 years ago—a pivotal moment that set me on a career path spanning various roles and start-up ventures in the mining industry. Over the past decade, I have been privileged to broaden my experience by consulting across diverse industries globally. This exposure revealed something profound: what I had previously considered mining-specific challenges are, in fact, universal across many sectors. At its core, a mining operation is a complex system of interconnected activities—from exploration through mining operations like drill and blast, load and haul, to beneficiation, and outbound logistics. My cross-industry work has clearly shown that diverse sectors, such as chocolate manufacturing, tissue paper production, toilet paper converting facilities, labgrown diamonds, or high-tech equipment lifecycle management, all rely on value streams of interconnected activities to transform products. The objective is to maximise throughput while effectively managing performance variability. The primary difference lies solely in the specific technical expertise required for each industry, such as chemical, mining, processing, or metallurgical engineering. Across all these industries, I have observed a consistent pattern, that is, performance is primarily driven by individual efforts, where people react and work diligently as situations unfold in real-time. General managers and their teams often operate tactically, focusing on explaining yesterday’s poor performance rather than proactively setting up operations for success. This often resembles an ‘‘under-7s soccer match’’, with everyone chasing the ball. The common response to issues is to add more ad hoc meetings. This effort-driven organisational behaviour persists regardless of whether operations are greenfield digital manufacturing facilities, advanced digital mines with advanced process control, or operations run on paper and Excel spreadsheets for data acquisition. Paradoxically, more real-time data can lead to increased data noise, greater indecision, and sometimes, lower performance. Despite value streams often operating significantly below capacity, organisations continue to invest heavily in additional equipment or in ‘‘glossy brochure promises’’ of Industry 4.0 digital technology and real-time data solutions, which frequently fail to deliver value. This leads to a critical question: Have we underinvested in our most valuable resource— people? Even Tesla faced this challenge with their underperforming fully automated Model X facility. We must shift our focus to designing the ecosystem, or operating model, of our organisations. This extends beyond the traditional triad of people, process, and technology, and moves beyond simplistic views of change management. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to add significant value, but it also introduces another layer of complexity into designing the organisation of the future. My full presidential address below at the SAIMM AGM discussed the symptoms of an effort-driven organisation and covered the fundamental building blocks and requirements of an operating model, including recommendations on implementing a people-centric approach.

In most auriferous hydrothermal deposits, gold is preferentially associated with pyrite and arsenopyrite minerals, with higher economic gold values noted for the latter and arsenian pyrite minerals. In this paper, surface (Cryo-XPS) and solution (EDTA extraction) analysis were used to characterise pyrite and arsenopyrite minerals under different aqueous conditions involving electrokinetic study and collector interactions to better understand ways of improving the separation of pyrite and arsenopyrite. The evidence showed higher surface oxidation at solution pulp pH values in the range of 4-11 for arsenopyrite relative to pyrite. The observed highest ratio of pyrite to arsenopyrite selectivity was 1.7 at collector concentration of 50 g/t and decreased with an increase in collector concentration. THE THIRD INTERNATIONAL GEOCHEMICAL EXPLORATION SYMPOSIUM (Summary Account) This Symposium, co-sponsored by the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and the Society of Economic Geologists, was held in Toronto, Canada in April, 1970. Over 700 delegates attended from 26 countries. Ninety papers were presented at the symposium and another 18 papers were read by title. The programme included: An Opening Session, Five General Sessions, a session on Remote Sensing Methods, a session on Geochemical Prospecting for Petroleum and Natural Gas, a session on Primary Halos and Lithogeochemical Methods, and a session on Statistics and Evaluation of Geochemical Data. The delegates were welcomed by Dr J. M. Harrison, President of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and Dr C. H. Smith, Regional Vice-President, North America of the Society of Economic Geologists. Dr D. R. Derry of Toronto delivered the opening address to the Symposium entitled 'Geochemistry-the link between ore genesis and exploration'. Dr Derry considered the various hypotheses on the origin of economic mineral deposits and expressed his belief that the next ten years will show evidence of an increased proportion of ore bodies that owe their origin, at some stage in time, to supergene agencies. He stressed that 'there are no sharp divisions between processes that form and destroy ore bodies at or near surface and those that form or destroy them at a depth of 20 kilometres in the earth's crust. The more we understand about the migration and concentration of metals the more accurately we can apply this knowledge to searching for unknown concentrations, whether at rock surface or at depth. To learn more about these processes of ore genesis we must rely on geochemical studies co-ordinated with field observations'. The five general sessions included accounts of progress in geochemical prospecting in different countries of the world, case histories describing the application of soil, stream sediment, geobotanical and biogeochemical techniques, papers on the behaviour of different elements under varied environmental conditions, discussions on analytical methods and the use of stable isotopes in mineral exploration. It is anticipated that the proceedings of the Symposium will be published late in 1970 or early in 1971 as a Special Volume of The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. All registrants at the Symposium will receive a copy of this publication and copies will be available for purchase. At a special meeting called during the Symposium, charter members of the Association of Exploration Geochemists approved a constitution and elected an interim Council which will organize procedure and formulate policy during the coming year. The interim president of the Association is J. Alan Coope, Newmont Mining Corporation of Canada Limited, Toronto, Canada. More information on the constitution and membership in the Association will be distributed to learned societies and technical magazines in the near future. Membership will be open to exploration geochemists in all countries of the world. SOUTH AFRICAN COUNCIL FOR PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERS Report on Registration The Professional Engineers Act (Act 81 of 1968) came into force on the 14th February, 1969. At the time it was recognised that the success of the Act would depend in large measure on the extent to which engineers in South Africa would become registered professional engineers in terms of the provisions of the Act. The promulgation of the Act and its provisions relevant to registration were the subject of considerable publicity during 1969. This has resulted in a rate of application for registration far beyond the capacity of the very active committees set up for this purpose by the South African Council for Professional Engineers (SACPE). The Kupol mill facility processed a high grade free milling gold/silver ore containing 28.2 g/t Au, 324.8 g/t Ag and approximately 0.5% pyrite during 2008 operation. Gold predominantly occurs a selectrum in the ore and silver is predominantly present in the forms of acanthite, stephanite, pyrargyrite and proustite. Mill start-up was in mid-May 2008 and the mill reached the design throughput of 3 000 tpd in October. The ore was ground to approximately 70%?53 microns. A Knelson Concentrator recovered 9.8% gold and 0.5% silver. The gravity tails reported to a cyanidation circuit that has 14 hours pretreatment and 116 hours leaching. The slurry from cyanidation was then processed by counter current decantation (CCD) thickening to wash and separate the leach residue from the pregnant leach solution. Precious metals are recovered fromthe pregnant solution using the Merrill-Crowe process. The washed CCD leach residue slurry is treated with calcium hypochlorite to destroy cyanide and then sent to the tailings impoundment. Leaching is performed with a new technology called ?CELP? (CANMET Enhanced Leach Process). The Kupol mill overall gold and silver recoveries for 2008 were 95.4% and 85.6% respectively, which were 2.8% and 7.5% higher than targets. Gold and silver extractions in the leach circuit were 94.2% and 84.5% respectively. Leach profiles indicated that gold extraction reached a plateau in the 4th tank while minor silver dissolution occurred in the 5th tank. With the CCD circuit included, total gold and silver extractions increased to 95.4% and 86.6%, respectively. Optimization of the leaching strategy made it possible to reduce sodium cyanide concentration to as low as 410 ppm without compromising precious metals extractions. Silver was effectively leached from the refractory silver minerals because CELP produced more oxidized mineral surface relative to the conventional cyanidation leached mineral surfaces. The average cyanide consumption for 2008 was 1.3 kg/t. The new leaching technology proved to be very robust and performed efficiently even with changes in feed grade and ore mineralogy. Laboratory experiments produced results that were indicative of plant performance. The robustness of the technology and the laboratory test work contributed to the success of the Kupol mill start-up.

The cross-belt sampler is a device that is very widely used even though it has not been ratified by the Standards associations. This paper is concerned with the bias testing of two cross-belt sampler designs against stopped belt samples and a cross-stream cutter at the belt end. The bias analysis is carried out using size distribution as the analyte and conventional t-testing and the Hotelling T squared test, which are compared for their effectiveness. The paper considers the issue of detectable bias and the statistical planning of bias tests.

Based on information supplied by South African collieries to the Coal Mining Laboratory of the Chamber of Mines since 1978, the paper outlines the general performance of the continuous miners used and gives the results more-detailed studies of the cutting, loading, and transportation processes. On average, the continuous miners produced coal at a rate of 76 t per operating hour, which, at an average machine availability of 67 per cent, resulted in a production of 51 t per total hour. The cutting rates varied between and 250 t/h but, owing to machine and system inefficiencies, the overall production rate varied between 92 and 48 It is concluded that, if the collieries concentrated on improving their machine utilization procedures and operating practices, they could increase the overall production from their continuous-miner sections.

The Grootegeluk coal-beneficiation plant was erected in the Waterberg coalfield, near Ellisras in the Transvaal, to supply Iscor's steelworks with a predetermined tonnage of coking coal in accordance with strict quality requirements. This plant has to handle a high tonnage of raw coal, which is not easy to beneficiate, in order to produce 1,82 X IQ6t of coal. Extensive tests were conducted on borehole cores and a mass sample of coal obtained from the area. These tests were carried out on a laboratory and pilot-plant scale, and were aimed at the establishment of the most effective beneficiation methods and the choice of suitable equipment. This led to the completion of a full set of design and manufacturing drawings that resulted in the project approach . described in this paper.

A brief overview is given of the issues regarding the processing of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). The printed circuit board component of WEEE is an exceptionally complex feed to possible recycling processes. Scrap printed circuit boards were selectively smelted at 1 200°C to produce a metallic alloy. Iron and aluminium were found not to be part of the alloy. The alloy was characterized by SEM-EDS, and three phases were identified: alpha and delta bronzes, and a lead-rich phase. Calculations show that about 56 mass per cent of the alloy is the alpha phase, 35 per cent delta phase and 9 per cent lead phase. A simplified approach using appropriate binary phase diagrams was used to derive a phase composition for the alloy. This was further backed by FactSage calculations, which showed that the simplified approach was appropriate for this alloy. The experimental findings and theory were found to agree well.

The kinetics of cyanide loss were found to be first order under any given set of conditions, allowing rate constants to be easily determined. At room temperature and in the absence of activated carbon, some cyanide is lost by hydrolysis to hydrogen cyanide, but this does not occur to any significant extent at pH values higher than about 10. A higher rate of hydrolysis occurs when air agitation is used. When activated carbon is present, an additional carbon-catalysed oxidation reaction is responsible for a fairly high loss of cyanide. The evidence indicates a reaction mechanism that consumes oxygen and produces cyanate ion. Some of the cyanate thus produced decomposes to form a mixture of ammonia, carbonate, and urea, depending on the solution conditions. Additional cyanide is lost as a result of the adsorption of sodium cyanide by the activated carbon. At high temperatures, an additional hydrolysis reaction, which involves the formation of ammonium formate as an intermediate, occurs an/j is responsible for. a high loss of cyanide, leading ultimately to the formation of ammonia, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide. The presence of activated carbon has no effect on the rate of this reaction.

A variety of backfills is presently being placed in different gold mines. The backfills are pumped as slurries to stopes where they are discharged into some form of retaining paddock. The effectiveness of fill as a support medium will depend on a number of factors. These can largely include (i) inherent properties of the material, e.g. particle size, shape, distribution and com- position, and (ii) conditions of placement. The terminology required for describing backfills is introduced, and the various laboratory-measured properties are presented for a variety of fills. Finally, the properties of the fills as they are placed underground are discussed.

2nd CONGRESS OF THE INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR ROCK MECHANICS The 2nd Congress of the International Society for Rock Mechanics will be held in Belgrade, 21-26 September, 1970. The Congress will include: working sessions, study tours, receptions, excursions introduced in the working sessions and post-congress excursions and special programme for accompanying persons. Anyone interested in rock mechanics and its applicarion may take part in the 2nd Congress. Official languages of the Congress are: English, French and German. Simultaneous translation service will be provided during the Congress. The purpose of the Symposium is to define the role of decision making techniques within the mineral industry and to stimulate the development of specific applications. The subject of the Symposium-mathematics, operations research and computers as applied to the mineral industry-allows a complete picture of the mineral industry in its public policy, corporate, financial and technological environment to emerge. This is another of the series of symposia on this and related subjects started in the early 1960's at the University of Arizona. Sponsorship has included a number of Universities and the Society of Mining Engineers of the American Institute of Mining. This 1970 symposium is the first to be held outside of America, and is being sponsored by the Canadian Institute of Mining, McGill University and Ecole Polytechnique. High-rate floc-blanket clarification of gold pregnant rotary filtrate was introduced at the Vaal Reefs South gold plant of the Anglo American Corporation during February 1978. A. daily 12 000 to 15 000 t of filtrate, with an average suspended-solids concentration of 350 mg/I, is continuously clarified to a concentration of less than 2S mg/I of suspended solids in a modified plant pachuca (10 m in diameter) at throughput rates of 7,7 to 8,5 ma/m2.h by the addition of 5 g/t of ferric chloride inorganic coagulant and 0,2 g/t of Superfloc NI00 flocculant. The pachuca overflow is then clarified further in seven Stellar candle pressure filters of 54,S m2 surface area to under 5 mg/I of suspended solids. The combined clarification cost when the hopper clarifier is used in conjunction with the Stellar filters is R0,0032 per ton of liquid treated, which is approximately 60 per cent lower than the cost of Stellar filtration on its own. The savings are mainly due to the reduced use of filter pre-coat, the consumption of which has dropped by 70 per cent since the introduction of hopper clarification.

Iron Age metal working in the Magaliesberg area by H. M. FRIEDE, Ph.D. (Visitor) Evidence of smelting and metal working in the Magaliesberg comes mainly from three sites: Broederstroom (Pretoria District). Uitkomst Cave (Krugersdorp District), and Olifantspoort/Olifantshoek \Rustenburg District). The analyses of copper ores found at or near these sites are reported. as are the analyses of twenty-six samples of slag from the Magaliesberg area and other sites in the Transvaal. Iron implements and copper ornaments found at the Magaliesberg sites are described. and the analyses of some of these specimens are reported and discussed. A metallographic report on two iron objects from Broederstroom points to similarities in the smelting and forging techniques that were practised in the Transvaal and Nigeria during the Early Iron Age.

The gold dissolution in sulfuric acid media during industrial oxidative leaching test of sulfide gold-copper flotation concentrates has been achieved. The reason for this was using technological water containing thiocyanates and cyanides, which can dissolve gold under these conditions. The carbon in column (CIC) process for gold recovery from these solutions was proposed. However, significant amounts of copper and iron were adsorbed onto the carbon during CIC technology industrial tests. This resulted in a decrease of the gold content in the loaded carbon up to 0.5 kg/t. Further development of the technology was conducted by optimisation of gold and impurities stripping and implementation of carbon reactivation. It was shown, that the copper extraction from the loaded carbon during cyanide treatment was about 95%. The copper content in the stripped carbon after cyanide treatment was 1.76 kg/t. The gold recovery during high-pressure elution by caustic solution was 98%. The hydrochloric acidic treatment with thermal pre-treatment (reactivation) for removing iron and calcium from gold-free carbon was proposed. In this case, the iron and calcium extractions from carbon were 40-45 and 50-55% respectively. These tests showed that for carbon recycling the sequence operations of ‘cyanide treatment, gold elution, thermal pre-treatment, hydrochloric acidic treatment’ can be used.
