Experimental work by the Bureau of Mines indicates that when a coalbed is degassed by boreholes, the flow of methane may actually increase with time. This phenomenon appears to be the result of a relative-permeability effect; that is, the coalbed permeability to the gas increases sharply with decreasing water saturation. This report reviews the background of experimental evidence indicating a relative-permeability effect, and presents the results of a computer simulation of two-phase flow in coal.

The literature has been surveyed and values recalculated for the heats and free energies of formation of solid rare-earth compounds at 298° K. In most instances it was necessary to estimate the entropies. Thermodynamic properties of aqueous rare-earth ions have also been calculated. INTRODUCTION The accumulation of thermochemical data on rare-earth compounds in recent years makes it possible to review the subject and to obtain more consistent and more reliable information than was available previously.

"The town of Ajo is built in the desert and consisted of but a few houses when the New Cornelia Copper Co. started operations. Since there were no stores at Ajo or vicinity the New Cornelia Cooperative Mercantile Co. was established to serve the needs of the employees of the New Cornelia and allied companies.The New Cornelia Copper Co. advanced the money to erect the store building and to buy the stock, and assumes all risks. In all, $85,000 has been advanced, representing the capital stock of the enterprise.The store is run by a store manager appointed by the Copper Company and who reports only to the general superintendent. A committee of seven workmen, representing the various depart¬ments, meet with the store manager monthly and make suggestions for the betterment of the service and, present complaints which have been brought to their attention.The store is well managed, carries a large and well assorted stock and is modern in every respect. Prices are at the same level as in the other Southwestern mining camps. The Copper Company does not particpate in the profits of the store but does receive six per cent interest on the capital advanced. At the end of the year, after making proper deductions for interest on capital account, depreciation of store equipment and fixtures, and, for a proper sum to the surplus account, the rest of the profits is distributed among the employees of the company in proportion to the amount of their purchases."

The U. S. Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation to determine the cause of the deterioration of Portland cement during storage and transportation , and to discover a means of preventing it . All available printed sources of information on this subject have been examined and a bibliography has been compiled . The subject has also been discussed with the leaders in the cement industry ; the present report is the result of their cooperation , and is based principally on information thus obtained . Deterioration of Portland cement during storage over any considerable period of time has long been noted ; closely related to it is deterioration of cement during transportation, which involves not only the time factor of storage but also exposure to varied climatic conditions . Deterioration in both cases is due to hydration of the cement by absorption of moisture from a humid atmosphere , or by exposure to actual rain-fall . After hydration cement possesses no cohesive power ; the degree of deterioration is directly proportional to the degree of hydration . The amount of deterioration of Portland cement during storage has been accurately determined in an investigation by the Structural Materials Research Laboratory , in cooperation with the Portland Cement Association . Cement stored in a shed in cloth sacks retained 80 per cent of its original strength after three months storage ; 71 per cent after six months ; 61 per cent after one year ; and 40 per cent after two years . The deterioration of Portland cement during storage and transportation was noted particularly in France during the World War . Information concerning cement used by the American Expeditionary Forces was furnished by Lt. Col. H. S. Spackman and Major E. C. Eckel , U. S. R. , who had charge of practically all matters concerning cement used by the A. E. F. The cement used by the A. E. F. came from the following sources : 42,000 tons was French , Swiss , and Spanish cements ; 120,000 tons was English cement ; 55,000 tons made in plants operated by the A.E.F .; 500 tons ( Not over) from America . Deterioration was most marked in cement from the first source .

To expediate the transfer of technology from Bureau laboratories into new products and processes that enhance the economic competitiveness of the U.S. mining and minerals industry in world markets. Background The U.S. Bureau of Mines and various members of the industry are concerned about the current technology challenge to the minerals industry in the United States. They arc working together to delineate ways of enhancing the mineral industry's technology base. More emphasis is being placed on collaboration between the government, academia, and industry to formulate the innovative revolutions needed to maintain our technology edge. Through these partnerships, real issues and problems can be identified, the industry's needs as customers can be defined, and research and development activities can be tailored to meet these needs. Now is an especially exciting time in research because some special opportunities exist to encourage private industry to capitalize on Federal laboratory research and development. These opportunities arc called CRADA's. What Is A CRADA? The Congress recently enacted a mechanism that enhances collaboration between industry and government through the Technology Transfer Act of 1986. A key lea lure of this Act is a provision through which Cooperative Research and Development Agreements or CRADA's can be developed to encourage industry and government to work together and stretch their research budgets. By entering into a CRADA, a private, non-Federal company can cost-effectively perform research by sharing the costs of this research with the Federal Government. The agree¬ment involves no transfer of funds from the Government. The Government agrees to provide personnel, services, facilities, equipment or other resources (but nut funds) and the non-Federal party agrees to provide funds, personnel, services, facilities, equipment, or other resources needed to conduct a specific research or development effort.

Provide a means of evaluating the in place structural properties of coal seams and coal measure rocks in advance of mining. Approach Develop a sonic logging probe for use in dry wells, a condition common to shallow wells and semi-arid coal regions. How It Works The Bureaus' sonic probe differs from conventional sonic probes because it does not require fluid in the well to couple sonic vibrations to the drill hole wall. A self-contained hydraulic system forces pistons containing the measurement transducers against the wall and clamps them in position until the sonic waveform information has been recorded. The pistons are then retracted and the probe is raised or lowered in the well as required. In the clamped position, the piezoceramic transmitter emits a sonic pulse which travels along the drill hole wall and is detected at the receivers in the form of compressional (P) and shear (S) wave motion. The receivers are designed to be sensitive to either the (P) wave or (S) wave motion as determined by the operator so that discrimination between the two wave types is improved by comparison of the respective output channels, and the travel time between transmitter and detectors can be accurately determined. Use of two receiver stations eliminates errors in timing of pulse travel because of electronic delays inherent in the probe.

The chemical properties of the unsaturated members of the aliphatic series of hydrocarbons are such as to render them " made to order" starting points or basic . materials for the synthesis of hundreds of important organic chemicals . The tremendous quantities of these unsaturated compounds that are being produced daily in the various coal carbonization and oil refining processes , and which at present have little value other than that of fuel , render a survey of the identity and ex- tent of occurrence of these compounds important from the viewpoint of economic utilization and resource conservation The increased need of liquid fuel and the relatively early exhaustion of petroleum resources will eventually require every utilization of liquid fuel products obtainable directly or indirectly from coal . Accordingly , the Bureau of Mines took advantage of an opportunity for examining the gaseous unsaturated hydrocarbons found in the gas obtained when a mixture of water- Collection of the material gas tar and coal is distilled in a gas-making retort . for examination was made possible through the courtesy of the Trent Process Corporation , Washington , D.C. , which was at that time carrying on at the Georgetown Gas Works , distillation of " amal gams " prepared from various coals and oils by the Trent process for cleaning coals . Kanawha gas coal ( 70%) and water gas tar ( 30 % ) from the Washington Gas Light plant were used in the " amal gam" being distilled at that time . The results obtained in this examination are presented here .

"Welfare endeavor in connection with both the metal and the coal mines of Utah has shown gratifying progress during recent years, and in most mining towns of the state, both the operators and their employees deserve much credit for the efforts put forth to better the living, working, educational and recreational conditions. Progress has been and is being made, but there are still a few important towns where purer water and better sewage disposal are pressing needs.In the older metal-mining towns that are incorporated and are independent of the mining properties operating in the vicinity, less opportunity is presented for the companies to exercise efforts looking toward improved welfare conditions than in company towns controlled by the mine operators.However, even in such towns the companies can do much to better welfare conditions, as shown by the progress in Bingham Canyon during the past several years. The Utah Copper Company has spent $800,000 since 1920, in the erection of modern brick cottages, apartment houses and the Germnell Memorial Club. The cottages and apartment houses have every convenience to be found in up-to-date city homes. The Gemmell Memorial Club erected and equipped at a cost of $175,000 was provided by the company for the benefit of the Utah Copper employees living in the canyon and has been made the recreational center for the camp. Another improvement is the $100,000 fireproof hotel built by the United States Mine of the United States Mining, Smelting and Refining; Co. in the Copperfield section of Bingham Canyon. This hotel will accommodate 105 men exclusive of hotel help and has all the conveniences of a city hotel."

Gas drainage through surface bore¬holes has been the conventional means of methane control for U.S. longwall gobs. However, these vertical boreholes are becoming so costly, and the surface rights so difficult to obtain, that the Bureau of Mines is developing underground gob gas drainage as an alternate means of methane control for U.S. longwal..ls. Holes are drilled into the roof over the panel and on retreating longwalls, towards the working face from a location inby the face. As the longwall retreats, an increasing portion of the hole inter¬cepts the fracture system over the caved gob. A surface exhauster maintains a vacuum on a pipeline parelleling the panel and draws the methane mixture out of the mine. Auxiliary systems of gob gas drain¬age during longwall mining will be essen¬tial for an increasing number of coal mines. Deep and gassy mines often find ventilation insufficient for adequate dilution of methane in bleeder entries. Although this cross-measure method of degasification has been used successfully in Europe, some of the European tech¬niques cannot be directly applied to U.S. mines. This is the first study of its kind in this country.

Develop rugged, cost-effective fire protection for hydraulic shovels and backhoes. Approach Automatic fire sensing and suppression systems were designed and built for use on hydraulic shovels and backhoes. How It Works A line-type temperature sensor is mounted in the machine's engine and hydraulic pump areas to detect the heat from a fire while it is still small and easy to control. Two systems were tested. In one, the inside of the sensor consists of two conductors separated by a ceramic material whose electrical resistance decreases with increases in temperature. When heated to a predetermined temperature) the control circuit responds to the resistance drop. In the second system, the detection element of the sensor is comprised of a thin metal tube containing a hydrogen charged metal hydride wire. The tube is sealed at one end and is connected to a sensitive pressure switch at the other end. When exposed to the heat from a fire, hydrogen gas released from the metal hydride wire actuates the pressure switch.

This chapter summarizes data on crude nonfuel mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Also included are tables that show the principal nonfuel mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of Volume I and in the State chapters of Volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing. the stage of measurement used in this chapter is what is normally termed ?mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the output from auxiliary processing at or near the mines.

In 1935 , Brown and Yant / described a microprojector ( microscopic arrangement for projecting images on a screen ) for use in counting and measuring the size of dust particles in Owens - jet dust - counter and simila dry samples of dust collected from the air . In 1938 Brown and others , described a modification of this microprojector that could be used also in counting dust in impinger samples . Microprojectors of this second type have been set up by many mining companies and others and have been made commercially available . Hamly and Pullen5/ described a modification of this microprojector for use in making rapid comparative estimates on konimeter samples and other determinations . This report contains information on still another modification named the "midget microprojector " because of its small size .

Approach Increase the quantity and quality of the water supply on longwall faces by decreasing pressure losses, Increasing pump capacity, and installing a "non-clogging" filtration system. How It Works Water sprays and ventilation are two of the primary methods of dust control on longwall operations. Increasing the quantity and quality of the water supply to spray systems is one of the more effective and least costly dust control methods that operators have at their disposal, yet this method is largely ignored. Poorly positioned spray nozzles operating at low pressures (and flows) which plug frequently cannot be effective. Water supply system Improvements should be a fundamental part of all longwall dust control plans. Upgrading a water supply system may require one or more of the following improvements depending upon where a particular system may be deficient: Increasing pump capacity for additional flow and pressure; increasing line sizes to decrease pressure losses: and, decreasing maintenance downtime and Improving water quality by installing a "non-clogging" filtration system.

As part of its work for the improvement of safety conditions in mines , the Bureau of Mines has undertaken to establish a list of permissible storage - battery locomotives for use in gaseous mines , and , to this end , has issued Schedule 15 , "Procedure for Establishing a List of Permissible Storage -Battery Locomotives for Use in Gaseous Mines . " Up to the present time , two approvals * have been issued under this Schedule , and considerable testing work done on four other applications which have been made for approval . Prior to the publication of Schedule 15 , the Bureau conducted both field and laboratory investigations to determine the hazard from the batteries used in mine locomotives . ** These investigations indicated that the safety of the locomotive would depend largely on proper care of the battery , also on the use of a battery as mechanically rugged as possible . For this reason the Bureau staff , in testing locomotives submitted for approval , considered it advisable to subject the batteries to a jarring or bumping test to prove their adequacy as regards mechanical endurance and ruggedness . These tests on the batteries of the locomotives are described below.

Approach Direct the face airflow from tailgate-to-headgate, the direction of coal transport. How It Works Ventilation is the primary method of dust control on longwall faces, and the most effective ventilation control is to put workers upwind of dust sources. Recent ad¬vances in longwall dust sampling by the Bureau have shown that on some faces, the headgate crusher and transfer points are signifi¬cant sources of dust -some¬times making up more than half of the total dust to which the face workers are exposed. Also, when the air is coursed from head-to-tail, the relative velocity between the air and moving coal on the face conveyor can cause dust entrainment from the conveyor, particularly if the coal is dry. On the faces where these dust sources are a signifi¬cant problem, they may be eliminated by coursing the air from tailgate-to-headgate, provided that the mine roof is stable enough to permit the necessary intake of the tailgate along with an aux¬iliary intake at the headgate.

Methane emissions from a longwall ventilation system are an important indicator of how much methane a particular mine is producing and how much air should be provided to keep the methane levels under statutory limits. Knowing the amount of ventilation methane emission is also important for environmental considerations and for identifying opportunities to capture and utilize the methane for energy production. Prediction of methane emissions before mining is difficult since it depends on a number of geological, geographical, and operational factors. This study proposes a principle component analysis (PCA) and artificial neural network (ANN)-based approach to predict the ventilation methane emission rates of U.S. longwall mines. Ventilation emission data obtained from 63 longwall mines in 10 states for the years between 1985 and 2005 were combined with corresponding coalbed properties, geographical information, and longwall operation parameters. The compiled database resulted in 17 parameters that potentially impacted emissions. PCA was used to determine those variables that most influenced ventilation emissions and were considered for further predictive modeling using ANN. Different combinations of variables in the data set and network structures were used for network training and testing to achieve minimum mean square errors and high correlations between measurements and predictions. The resultant ANN model using nine main input variables was superior to multilinear and second-order non-linear models for predicting the new data. The ANN model predicted methane emissions with high accuracy. It is concluded that the model can be used as a predictive tool since it includes those factors that influence longwall ventilation emission rates.

There is outlined below the essential facts brought out in an investigation into the causes for emulsion difficulties as experienced at many water gas plants . The investigation was conducted under a cooperative agreement between the University of Illinois Engineering Experiment Station , the Illinois State Geological Survey , and the U. S. Bureau of Mines . Funds of the Illinois Gas Association were used to defray a part of the costs . Active assistance was rendered by the Peoples Gas Light and Coke Company , of Chicago , who furnished a laboratory at Chicago for conducting the experiments , and loaned the services of Mr. E. A. Thiele to help with the laboratory work . A full report on the results of this work will be published by the Bureau of Mines later but it is believed desirable to bring the principal results now to the attention of the industry . In almost every gas plant where carbureted water gas is made , some difficulty is experienced , at one time or another , in separating the tar fran the water that condenses from the gas . The fact that annoyance from this source is ever present in some plants , and seldom present in others , leads to the belief that certain operating variables have considerable to do with the formation of difficulty separable tarwater emulsions . Accordingly , when samples of tar were collected for laboratory study , the operating conditions and methods were simultaneously observed and recorded.

Provide the mining industry with a method for determining the gas content of ore bodies and associated strata for use in mine planning, Approach Samples of various rock types are collected and tested to determine gas content in conjunction with sample size, the collection method (i.e. whether the sample was collected from a core sample or by hand) mine gas emission, and the geologic location from which the sample was taken, such as near a fault, outburst area, or other geologic anomaly. How It Works Two methods were developed by the Bureau of Mines to determine the gas contents of rock samples. The first method developed involved dissolving minerals to measure gas emission. This method, however, can only be used with soluble minerals. A second method, therefore, was developed for use with insoluble minerals. With this method, the sample is crushed in a ball mill. Although the dissolution method is faster and more accurate to use, the crushing method is also advantageous because its use can more closely approximate a mining situation; the sample is crushed as in mining and the amount of gas released relates to the amount of gas that would be released during a mining operation. The dissolution method is applied to soluble minerals, such as rock, salt, or trona, in a sealed chamber. Gases released during dissolution are collected for analysis by gas chromatography. One advantage in using the dissolution method is that the test apparatus is relatively inexpensive. In addition, test can be performed at any scale, from single crystal samples to a solution mining operation.

We are here today to witness the graduation of 63 young men as Engineers in the mineral industries . It is an important occasion and one in which the public takes a keen interest , since this school has long been famous for the educational facilities it affords young men, and for the high professional standing of its graduates . : : : It is fitting that once each year we should pause to review the path the student has traveled , and to reflect upon the perspective opening before him as an engineer . I was invited to come from Washington to take part in this ceremony and to say something to these young graduates . In searching for a theme ," it occurred to me. that perhaps my best contribution would be to duscuss certain beliefs as to college training , deal with the situation in which the young engineer finds himself on graduation , touch on the new ideas of the social and political responsibilities of the engineer , and point out what he may expect to find in practice , and , above all , what he must do to orient himself properly in the mining profession and maintain the best traditions of our brotherhood . Let us first review your college days and see what they have done for you . I am told there are still many temptations in college . I know there used to be . Rest assured the same holds true in the professional life ahead of you. The main difference is , perhaps , that your greatest temptations in college were those offered by your teachers , who tried to entice you into realms of harder work, closer application , increased concentration , clearer thinking and better understanding , by animating your curiosity and increasing your powers of reasoning and of observation . In other words , here you have carefully and systematically been decoyed toward finer and loftier things . Do not expect that similar helpful influences will greet you on every side in your professional life . Often quite the contrary is the case .

Computer input data for an operating mine is developed on the basis of a detailed ventilation survey which includes air quantity, air quality, pressure loss and fan performance measurements. Quantity measurements must be reviewed extensively and assumptions made about leakage quantities and airflow paths. Pressure measurements must be reviewed and developed into a pressure gradient for the mine system. Air quality measurements are used to determine methane sources and amounts. Finally, the fan test data is used to develop the correct fan characteristic curve. Quantities and pressure losses for each branch in the system are used to calculate the branch resistances which are then utilized in the ventilation simulator to model the mine system. QUANTITY BALANCE The quantity of air coming into a mine based on field measurements will rarely equal the quantity exiting the mine, even if allowances are made for methane or compressed air input to the system. The same statement can be made for airflow through any isolated part of the mine ventilation system such as individual working section or main aircourses leading to an area isolated from the rest of the mine. The reason for the apparent discrepancies is the accuracy of the indicated quantities which in turn is based on the accuracy of the individual velocity and area measurements. Even with measurements following the guidelines described in the previous section on quantity measurement, this error can only be minimized but not eliminated. As a result the ventilation system must be carefully balanced so that, for any loop, the quantity in plus any methane or compressed air injection will equal the quantity out.
