Most of the Iron ore washing plants set up in India in the earlier days consist of sizing of the ore by dry / wet screening, washing and classification by screw classifiers. In this classical approach, iron values were lost in the form of fines and ultrafine into the tailing ponds as they had little commercial value in those days and accumulated in huge quantities over the years. As the high grade deposits are getting exhausted and the demand for high grade finer material for pellet making is ever increasing, focus is shifting towards recovering the values from the erstwhile tailing ponds by column flotation. This is also supposed to mitigate to a certain extent the environmental problems caused by the ever expanding and unmanageable tailing dams. A case study is presented wherein a composite sample is prepared from samples drawn systematically from multi - locations in a sprawling tailing dam. Laboratory scale column flotation tests on this composite tailings sample, basically originating from two operating iron ore beneficiation plants of JSW Steel Ltd., one of the leading producers of steel in India are found to be encouraging. Desliming followed by reverse and cationic flotation tests using flotation column resulted in the concentrate of 61.88% Fe, 4.81% SiO2, 2.52% Al2O3 and 3.30% loss on ignition (LOI) from the tailings analyzing 57.86% Fe, 7.10% SiO2, 3.52% Al2O3 and 6.14% LOI with 52% weight recovery. The causes for the quality improvement could be attributed to desliming of un-liberated ultra fines of kaoline and hydrated iron oxides and their further reduction by efficient flotation process. The process and the cationic collector developed for this purpose are adopted in the new flotation plant created to treat these tailings. An investigation into the hydrophobic aggregation of ultrafine smithsonite in surfactant solution has been undertaken through a combination of hydrophobic flocculation experiments, zeta potential measurements, surface tension measurements, and contact angle measurements. The experimental results have revealed that the behaviors of hydrophobic aggregation were closely correlated with the particle hydrophobicity, but they were not lowered byte change of the particle surface charges due to surfactants adsorption. On the other hand, the liquid (solution) surface tension (?LV) plays an important role in hydrophobic aggregation, and the hydrophobic aggregation could not occur below the critical liquid (solution) surface tension (?c). Meanwhile, this flocculation has been observed to require sufficient stirring strength and magnitudes of kinetic energy input to achieve the maximum aggregation degree. From the microflotation results, it has been found that the flotation kinetics response of smithsonite fines is markedly improved due to sufficient stirring strength, and the stirring strength influenced the floc flotation in a manner quite similar to their influence on the hydrophobic aggregation, suggesting that the formation of hydrophobic flocs is a promising means to recover smithsonite in the fine size range.

In this study, solvent extraction of zirconium by using triphenylphosphine oxide as extractant has been investigated. The results showed that extraction of zirconium by triphenylphosphine oxides in nitric acid and hydrochloric acid media were negligible. Extraction of zirconium in acetic acid media with concentration of 0.01~0.2 M has been studied and the results showed that the maximum percent of zirconium extraction was 40% in acid acetic with concentration of 0.01 M. By addition complexing agents such as potassium thiocyanate with the concentration of 0.01~0.2 M zirconium extraction increased up to 86% in 0.2 M potassium thiocyanate. By addition of sodium salicylate with concentration of 0.01 M and in pH=2.5, the maximum extraction of 96% was achieved. The striping of zirconium from organic phase can be carried out by 0.5 M solution of sulfuric acid.

Effects of irregularity, rough surface and aggregation of fine particles on ultrasonic attenuation are significant. The effects should be considered while predicting particle size by ultrasonic attenuation technology. The scanning electron microscope micrographs analysis also shows that particles surface is rough and irregularity. Any slurries has its fractal structure and its special fractal scale and dimension, so, effects of irregularity, rough surface and aggregation of fine particles can be de-scribed by fractal model. The discrepancies between predictions of ultrasonic attenuation based on the assumption of smooth spherical particles and data obtained from slurries of irregular particles indicated that there were different fractal structures. The ultrasonic attenuation model was modified by fractal dimensions. The result of experimental data and analogue calculation indicated that pre-dictions of the fractal modification of ultrasonic attenuation model show good agreement with experimental data. On the other hand, from the values of fractal obtained by inversely calculation, the degree of effects of irregularity, rough surface and aggregation of particles can be estimated. The positive value of fractal dimension indicates that the aggregation has the dominant effect on ultra-sonic attenuation, otherwise, the irregularity and rough surface has the dominant effect.

Waste water produced from coal preparation plants posses several problems during dewatering and solid/liquid separation. The natural sedimentation rate of the particles present in colloidal and finely divided suspended form is very slow. Flocculation technology is being applied in most of the coal washeries to recover water which is being accomplished through the use of inorganic salts, polymeric flocculants or both depending on the chemical and physical characteristics of the pollutants present in the waste water. The waste tailing water from Piperware coal preparation plant, Central Coalfield Limited (CCL), India, is highly turbid containing ~ 16000 NTU with negative surface charge in the pH range of 2 to 10. Polymeric flocculants in conjunction with fine magnetite is investigated to achieve faster settling rate with lowest level of water turbidity. The conditions affecting the interaction between the reagents and the turbid particles present in the tailings water are investigated. It is possible to bring down the turbidity of the water to < 90 NTU from very high turbid tailing water by using 2 mg/L of the polymeric flocculent in combination with 0.1 g/L of magnetite at natural pH of the tailing slurry. It has been found that finely divided positively charged magnetite particles in combination with the flocculent selectively coat the negatively charged impurities present in water and thereby increase the settling rate under the influence of a magnetic field.

The country ranks among world?s top five nations for its commodity reserves of coal and iron ore. Interestingly, only small part of country&apos;s landmass has been explored that provides opportunity for future substantial mineral discoveries. India plans to double infrastructure investments to US$ 1trillion. Despite the challenges in infrastructure project implementation, mining sector remains a key driver of demand growth for commodities in the years to come with a good prospect to grow in future.

Incomplete liberation of mineral particles is one of the key factors limiting the performance of industrial flotation circuits. This work aims to quantify the relationship between different breakage modes and how these affect mineral liberation properties. A copper porphyry (bornite) ore sample was subjected to breakage using a piston-die compression unit and an impact mill. The particles produced as a result of each mode of breakage were then characterised using Mineral Liberation Analysis (MLA) to quantify the mineralogical and liberation properties of the progeny particles. The impact mill was found to produce bornite that was finer grained relative to the host particles. In con-trast, bornite discharged from the piston-die unit closely followed the size distribution of the host particles and was retained to a greater extent in the larger/intermediate size fractions. The results provide insight into what breakage methods are optimal for the purposes of downstream separation.

The mineral suspensions do not present a newtonian behavior as their continuous phase; they can be pseudoplastic, dilatant, or both. The viscosity becomes as the most important rheological variable because the different industrial processes involve a wide variety of rheological scenes, with a specific rheological behavior for each one. Some authors have tried to model the viscosity of suspensions considering the volumetric fraction of solids and others have also kept in mind the size of the particles (Einstein, 1906; Batchelor, 1977; Jinescu, 1974; Krieger and Dougherty, 1959; Tangsathitkulchai and Austin, 1988). Others consider the shear rate (Cross, 1965; Hershel-Bulckley, 1926; Bingham, 1916, etc). However, none of the models is able to simulate the viscosity involving the physical, chemical and mechanic factors at the same time for crowded suspensions. A new model based on Neural Networks is presented, taking into account all the variables of ceramic clay suspensions and chemical additives. MIBC and sodium metasilicate are used as a frother and a dispersant in coal flotation respectively. In order to study interaction between them, flotation experiments were performed on fine coal (<150 microns). It was found that if the frother (MIBC) dosage is in excess of a certain limit, it has an activation effect on the gangue minerals associated with coal. In addition, it was found that however sodium metasilicate can disperse clay slimes eliminating slime coating, but in the case of excess dosage, could intensify activation effect of MIBC, which is undesirable in coal flotation. An outcome of geometallurgical mapping and modeling is the generation of continuous down hole profiles of quantitative geometallurgical attributes at assay scale. These attributes vary from traditional routine data collection methods such as assays and geotechnical logging (e.g. RQD, Fracture Frequency), to new measurements including petrophysical attributes, EQUOtip hardness data and modelled estimates of metallurgical performance indices (e.g. A*b, BMWi). Highly variable continuous geometallurgical data with high spatial resolution can make it difficult to identify spatially continuous domains. An automated method based on the well known time series analysis technique of cumulative summation (CuSum) has been developed which uses statistical analysis to identify domain boundaries in down hole profiles. A bootstrap analysis automatically identifies potential domain boundary locations with associated confidence levels and a series of t-tests determine the significance of defined populations. A hierarchical clustering algorithm is applied to results to enable data sensitivity to be taken into account. The method produces statistically significant populations and is suitable for application on either single or multiple drill hole datasets. Domains defined preserve the inherent variability of the continuous down hole data and provide a method for scaling up variability data (i.e. assay interval scale) to mine scale (i.e. bench scale, block model). A major advantage of the method is its ability to provide suitable input parameters for use in spatial modeling of non-additive and non-linear geometallurgical attributes through conditional simulation techniques.

"Increased mechanisation in underground stoping operations results in higher waste percentages in the run of mine. A new method of reducing waste is optical sorting. Optical sorters have low maintenance costs and can be installed underground. Rejected waste can be backfilled directly without having to be hoisted, therefore increasing the shaft capacity for a more valuable product.Pre-Concentration by Optical SortingA series of tests with an optical sorter at the laboratories of the Mineral Processing Department of the RWTH Aachen have shown that it is technically possible to sort almost any kind of ROM which has even slight differences in colour (Platinum Reef, Gold Reef, Kimberlites, Industrial Minerals, Aggregates, Coal, etc.).By employing optical sorters prior to conventional sorting plants, it is possible to reduce the amount of waste to be processed. Figure one shows test results of ore which is quite similar in colour to the waste (grey). With increasing waste in the feed, the recovery decreases according to the graph. In figure two, the colour ratio parameter of the sorter was changed with a similar waste percentage in the feed. With increasing loss of ore, a cleaner product can be achieved. Before designing a sorting plant, throughput tests are carried out. Throughputs vary depending on the size range. Sorters have a limit of about 250mm top size. In this upper size range, throughputs of 150t/h can be achieved."

The Sarcheshmeh new concentration plant uses a 32 ft×16 ft constant speed (10.5 RPM) SAG mill with two 5500 hp motors which could rotate in two directions. The mill liners are chrome-molybdenum steel casting type with a Brinnell hardness between 325 and 375 with the lifter face angle of 14° and lifter height of 152 mm. The shell liner consists of 120 (two 60 rows) pieces with a High-High configuration in a rail design. A specially designed liner wear profile measuring device enabled fast and accurate measurements inside the mill during the mill shut-down periods. The measurements indicated that the liner wear profile along the liner length is non-uniform and the highest wear occurs between 1.25m and 2.75m of the mill length. The average weight of liners at the time of removal was 47% of the original weight indicating a significant metal loss. The modification of liner shape was undertaken with the aim of having a uniform profile at the liner removal time. The proposed liner unlike the pervious type did not have a uniform shape with a lifter height of 187mm at the section where the wear rate was high. It was believed that this new profile could arrive at a uniform profile at the liner change out time. A study was also directed to the possible change of charge motion due to the liner profile modification. The dynamic behaviour of charge was investigated through the analysis of forces acting on a single ball using mill characteristics such as mill diameter, rotational speed, lifter height and release angle. The simulation of charge motion with this method and Milltraj TM software indicated that the impact position of charge will change only one degree due to the maximum increase of 35 mm in the lifter height. This assured that the installation of the modified liner would not have any adverse effect on the mill because of ball impacting the mill shell. It was predicated that the amount of scrap metal will reduce to 30% from the current value of 47% beside 1500 h increase in the liner life time.

Laboratory scale experiments were conducted to produce titanium-rich material from Panzhihua ilmenite. The results showed preoxidation with sodium salt additive especially for Na2B4O7 signif- icantly advance the reduction of iron in Panzhihua ilmenite. Acceleration mechanism of preoxidation with Na2B4O7 has been studied here. The maximum metallization of iron 92% can be obtained under conditions of preoxidation at 850? for 30 min and subsequent reduction at 1100? for 150 min. The rusting separation technique to reduced ilmenite has been further studied, obtaining titanium-rich product with TiO2 over 82% and the recovery of TiO2 above 97%.

Vanadium-beard bone coal is one of important vanadium resources in China.To extract vanadium tailings from Stone coal is produced after extracted vanadium from stone coal through the roasting, leaching and other processes. About 120-150 tons of tailings will be produced in extracting 1 ton of vanadium pentoxide. A lot of tailings that are willfully piled up have caused serious environmental pollution and wasting of resources; it is therefore necessary to realize its resource utilization. This study increases the activity of vanadium tailings by means of alkali fusion, and then uses different alkali activators to react with vanadium tailings so that geopolymer with high value added is produced. Sample of geopolymer is acquired from a mixture containing vanadium tailings, alkali activators, water and a little sodium aluminate through compression-molding process under 20MPa pressure. After cured in room temperature for three days, the maximum compressive strength of the sample can reach 36.2MPa. XRD analysis indicates quartz, the major crystal phase in vanadium tailings is decomposed,and the activity of vanadium tailings is heightened. FTIR and SEM analyses show: structural change having an important impact on the mechanical strength of geopolymer occurred during the process of vanadium tailings generating geopolymer.

At the present time, methods of mining and coal preparation produce tones of coal fines. The removal of water from these fines is necessary for economical and technological reasons. Supplementary processes that utilize different physical and chemical methods have been developed to in-crease the productivity of mechanical dewatering processes. Researches have shown that chemical reagents used along with conventional systems diminish moisture and increase the capacity and the yields of the dewatering method. In this study, the parameters of the vibrating screen (incline, frequency, feeding rate and screen size), the effects of the application of additional vertical mechanical vibration and surface active reagents (CTAB, SDS, Umectante B-70 and Kerosene) were investigated. At the end of the optimization experiments, 61.0% moisture was decreased to 42.3%. By keeping optimum conditions con-stant, the experiments have been conducted to determine most effective reagent. 41.2% moisture has been obtained with 5 g/t CTAB at the normal pH of the pulp, which were 7.25. By using vibrating screen with combination of the vertical vibrating mechanism, CTAB gave the best result of 40.7% moisture. Finally, the effect of increased surface area of the screen has been investigated and de-creased the moisture level to 38.7%.

"Calcium carbonate is one of the most widely used mineral in today&apos;s industries such as plastic, paper and pigment. There are many essential physicochemical properties required by each industry field but the most common requisite is size. One way to achieve appropriate size is grinding. Grinding is typically an energy intensive process, consuming about 40% of total energy cost in mineral process. Due to that reason, optimization of grinding process is a critical element to achieve price competitiveness. Two different type of grinding apparatus were hired to find out optimum condition in terms of energy efficiency. Utilizing samples containing 10, 20, 30 and 40% solids concentrations, a 1l batch type attrition mill was operated as the first grinding step at various operating speed with 1? to 5? grinding media in order to study the optimum operating conditions to reach submicron particles. Next, a 0.15l vertical beads mill was tested as next step with 100? to 500? grinding media to study the optimum conditions in the submicron range. Net energy and the specific energy input was measured to reach stated size ranges. Also, using a back-calculation based on the population balance model further operating conditions were studied. There were several competitive combinations which showed significant energy efficiency improvement when compared with the single step grinding."

The first decade of the 21st century was one of fundamentally changed dynamics for the minerals industry. Following intense globalization commencing in the late 20th century production is now concentrated into large businesses that can compete across geography in diverse commodities. Asian industrialization and urbanization is now the main driver of growth in demand for energy and materials. Demand for the output of these industries has risen sharply, reversing decade long trends to reduced real commodity prices. Supply responded with expansions of existing mining and processing operations, and large investment in new resource development. Development of new, lower grade or more remote resources was stimulated. Resource development by global entities in frontier environments reinforced the importance of effective forms of social contract, and of stronger environmental performance. The worst economic shock in decades provoked no significant pause despite large impacts on corporate ownership. State owned enterprises commenced unprecedented foreign direct investment in minerals and energy resources. A thrust towards resource nationalism re-emerged as governments sought to ensure that the export of state owned resources contributes more strongly to government revenue, reducing the burden of trade in scarce resources on other trade-exposed sectors. The unprecedented combination of forces at work has made future predictions difficult, with day-by-day volatility in anticipated corporate fortunes, and investment plans. The challenge for process innovation (and for exploration) has been to keep up, maintaining a lid on costs as lower grade and more challenging ore bodies are brought on quickly in a context of competition for land use, community expectations and continued care for natural and living environments. While new projects have provided the necessary platforms for implementation of innovative approaches, there is evidence that a gap may have emerged between the pace of growth and the pace of innovation. The history of a century of process innovation in the context of growth of output, declining resource grades and commodity prices is presented. The necessary conditions for accelerated process innovation are considered, and future needs and approaches are discussed. Keywords: process innovation, resource development

"The mineralogical and physico-chemical characteristics of a polymetallic sample from a mine of West Serbia suggest that it can be classified as a SEDEX type of ore. Those ores contain multiple value components, being inter-dispersed as fine grained aggregates. This prevents concentration by gravity or flotation concentration processes. Mineralogically, the valuable metals (Cu;Zn;Pb;Au and Ag) occur as pyrite, sphalerite, galena, tetrahedrite, chalcopyrite, covellite, arsenopyrite, and non-metallic minerals (barite, and waste minerals). Novel technologies are under development within this project for the recovery of all valuable metals from this very complex material. The work comprises the further treatment of solid residue obtained after Cu and Zn extraction by bioleaching, for the subsequent recovery of Pb and the precious metals Ag and Au. The residue is first treated with a saturated sodium chloride solution, whereupon a chloride solution of lead (NaPbCl3) is obtained. From the chloride solution, lead was deposited in the form of lead carbonate, followed by reductive melting, whereupon lead anode was obtained. Electrolytic refining of the lead anode, using a solution of PbCO3 in methane sulphonic acid (MSA-Methanesulfonic acid, min 99.5% CH4O3S, density 1.48 kg/dm3, Manufacturer: Carl Roth) as an electrolyte, yielded refined lead cathode. It should be noted that, after precipitation and separation of lead carbonate, the sodium chloride solution is restored to its original composition by the addition of make-up reagents and returned for another lead-sulfate leaching cycle. The solid residue obtained after leaching lead-sulphate, is leached in thiosulphate solution, with the addition of an activator, a catalyst and lixiviant for gold, to yield a thiosulphate solution of gold and silver. Since the content of gold and silver in solution is low (below 1 mg/dm3), they are first electrolytically concentrated on steel cathode and then refined to pure metals using well-known chemical methods. Note that, after the electrolytic separation of gold and silver, thiosulphate solution is recycled to the leaching step."

The concept of a high pressure liquid jet mill with highly unsteady flow, has been developed and recently patented by Cornerstone Technologies LLC (CsT), for the purpose of micron and sub-micron particle production. The mill accepts feed sizes up to 15mm for some materials and is capable of sub-micron production. Successful material range from precious metals such as silver and palladium to dielectric components and substrates such as Barium Titanate slips, zirconia, titania and silica. The process has also succeeded in adequately reducing the size of materials for both composite and coating uses such as anthracite coal, graphite, chrome metal, wollastonite and more than 100 others. A unique design approach has been taken to highly maximize the energy flux in the mill’s chambers to create extremely high turbulence and destructive cavitation. This is assisted by shock waves, which cause particles to undergo ultra high frequency pressure pulsations, high frequency collisions and then abrasion, shattering, hydro-wedging, and cleaving. Due to these extreme properties the processing occurs in just fractions of a second allowing throughputs up to 1000 kg/h on a machine that would fit inside a 60 cm box. The technical solution and technological advance, as well as the environmental and economic benefits indicate rapid and wide spread acceptance of high-pressure liquid jet milling in modern industry.
