Numerous studies have examined the distribution of deep-sea manganese deposits throughout geologic history. Here I summarize the recent results, focusing on the frequency of occurrence, burial age and mechanism, and the paleoceanographic implications.

The discovery of rich alluvial diamond deposits on Namibia?s Skeleton Coast in 1908 began a period of intense exploration and mining off the coastal sand; and shallow surf zones. In the mid-60s a Texas entrepreneur, Sam Rollins took the search to the seafloor. The inhospitable conditions encountered made the early going difficult. After a slow start, the past 10 years have seen much progress in geologist?s understanding of the deposition mechanics and the use of sophisticated geo-physical and sampling techniques to aid in the discovery of economic deposits. Diamondfields, in a joint venture with BHP and Benguela Concessions, began an exploration program in 1994 for sea-bed diamonds off the Port of Luderitz in Namibia. This program has progressed to a mine development program with the potential of creating a 500,000 carat per year operation. The mining technologies being considered include state-of-the-art, remotely operated sea-bed crawlers and high volume dredges feeding to semi-mobile processing platforms. The company's objective is to use the best proven technology to create an environmentally responsible operation with the lowest fixed operating costs and the longest and safest weather operating window of any offshore operator working Africa's diamond coast.

The XRF Core-Scanner system performs non-destructive analysis of elements from Mg to U, in concentrations of ppm levels on split cores with digital images. Using the AVAATECH XRF Corescanner system, we conducted high resolution element analysis of deep sea sediment cores from Clarion-Clipperton fracture zone of the northeastern Pacific to reveal recent environmental changes. Comparison of data estimated by the XRF core scanner with ICP-AES showed relatively weak correlation coefficients except Mn contents. Down-core variations of most elements seem to be matched with each other and reflect changes of sediment colors. Especially Mn/Al ratio significantly change at distinct color boundaries. The variations of Mn/Al ratio with sediment colors are suggestive of changes in redox condition and further divided into two types probably affected by activities of benthic organisms. Be isotope age datings of select core (BC08-02-13) indicate that the color boundaries are approximately coincident with late Pliocene and Pleostocene also early Pliocene and late Pliocene boundary. Research on marine gas hydrate and the methane cycle has a tradition at IFM-GEOMAR. In summer 1996 during a cruise with RV SONNE offshore Oregon (USA) scientists of the former GEOMAR recovered the largest amount of gas hydrate from the seafloor. This discovery stimulated research on marine gas hydrates in Germany and induced funding of scientific programs such as LOTUS and OMEGA with numerous innovative technologies within the special program GEOTECHNOLOGIEN of BMBF and DFG. The primary objectives of ongoing and future research are to achieve a comprehensive knowledge of: • gas hydrate distribution and quantity; • variation and regulation of gas hydrate formation and dissociation as well as of the related fluid flow; • functioning of chemosynthetic communities in methane oxidation, carbonate precipitation and methanotrophy as biological barrier against methane emission and • delineating the escape routes of methane to the hydrosphere and atmosphere.

Placer minerals are one of the rich natural resources readily made available primarily and broadly in the form of inland placers, beach placers and offshore placers. The exploitation of placer minerals goes back in the history for a period of time immemorial in the form of alluvial placer mining. In India only 35% of coast has been scanned for beach placer minerals. The buried inland placers and offshore placers have not been given due attention. Integrated management and sustainable development of coastal and Open Ocean including the EEZ are of great importance to us. Judicious exploitation of non-renewable mineral resources plays an increasingly important role with regard to future economic and social development. This calls for newer techniques for exploring and analyzing more the seafloor. Though India could remain in the placer mining for the last four decades through the establishment of the Indian Rare Earth in both east and west coasts, the lack of necessary dynamism to expand such industry and catch the world market points out a significant setback. It is highly essential to establish the major trends of paleo-beaches, since some of them are definite to contain highly rich heavy mineral placers comparable to the one being mined by beach scraping. Placer deposits of heavy minerals occur in discontinuous patches on the beaches along the West Coast of India. In recent years the National Institute of Oceanography, India and the Geological Survey of India attempted to invest on nearshore placer exploration by applying the integrated survey techniques.

Environmental properties of the northeast Equatorial Pacific along 131.5 degrees west, between 5 degrees and 13 degrees north latitude, were investigated in association with changes in water column structures during the summer seasons of 1998 and 1999. Climatic disturbances such as El Nino and La Nina, should have affected this area during the study period. In 1998, a thermocline where temperatures rapidly decrease with depth, was formed at 90~110 m water depth. However, in 1999, a very fluctuating thermocline was observed with latitudes. As a result of changes in the water column structures, biological and chemical environment also showed fluctuation parallel to the changes in other physical parameters. Inorganic nutrient depleting areas, especially for nitrate+nitrite and phosphate, or oligotrophic regions were extended down to approximately 100 m depth, which coincided with the surface mixed layer depth. In the euphotic zone, depth integrated nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) values were 34 g-N/m2 (grams of Nitrogen per square meter of sea floor), 7 g-P/m2 in 1998 and 130 g-N/m2, 18 g-P/m2 in 1999, respectively. The results indicated that nitrogen (96 g-N/m2) and phosphorus (11 g-P/m2) are supported by up-welling and down-welling phenomena with convergence and divergence in the study area. Biological parameters in the water columns were largely determined by the physico-chemical environmental parameters. Subsurface chlorophyll maximum layers were coincided with the formation of seasonal thermocline. Copepods were the dominant group of zooplankton community at three sampling stations (N5, N6, N10) terms of abundance, which was the same results of previous surveys for the past 3 years. Among copepod populations, Oncaea sp., Oithona sp. Clausocalanus sp., Acarocalanus sp. and juvenile copepodites were dominant Appendicularians, foraminiferans and radiolarians were also dominant. To investigate diel vertical migration pattern of zooplankton, repeated samplings from the water depth of 0~50m and 50~200m were conducted at KODOS (Korea Deep Ocean Study) area before and after sunrise. Zooplankton abundance was slightly higher after sunrise than before sunrise in the surface layer. Chlorophyll-a concentrations were relatively low as the concentration of sediment increased in most experiments possibly due to a decrease of grazing pressure of microzooplantkon such as ciliates, which is the efficient grazer on small-sized phytoplankton. Because copepod predation on microzooplankton may be prevented by the high concentration of sediment, resulting in lower grazing pressure on small-sized phytoplankton. The results obtained during the baseline study as a part of KODOS project since 1998.

Hydrogenetic Fe-Mn crusts are ubiquitous in the ocean basins and play an important role in marine mineral-deposit research because of their widespread occurrence and high concentrations of valuable and rare metals. Directed research, which started in the last quarter of the 20th century, has provided significant results, with substantial amounts of data produced on Fe-Mn crusts structure, composition, and distribution in the global ocean. Detailed study of several seamounts has given confidence about the scale of Fe-Mn crust development and their characteristics. Now, commercial interests gain more and more attention. However, at the same time some theoretical questions related to Fe-Mn crust history including controls on metal sources and concentrations have not yet been answered. Here, we present the overview of age, composition, distribution, and geological setting of hydrogenetic Fe-Mn crusts from Pacific and Atlantic seamounts and discuss the geological evolution and conditions that led to the formation of potentially economic concentrations of metals. The age, composition, and distribution of Fe-Mn crusts in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans were determined by using a Fe-Mn deposits database compiled from our original data, published papers, published databases, and other international sources. Comparative analysis of Fe-Mn deposits from the Atlantic and Pacific oceans shows that there are similarities in basic characteristics of crust formation in both oceans. Simultaneously, there are significant differences in the scale of Fe-Mn crust distribution and composition that can be explained by differences in geological settings and characteristics of the deposition environment.

Around 235 million tonnes of marine aggregates have been dredged in the last decade from the UK continental shelf alone. The current distribution of marine aggregate production licence areas in North West Europe reflects the relationship between a variety of factors such as the natural distribution of deposits of sand and gravel, the demand for aggregates, the technical capabilities of the dredging fleet and environmental considerations. Whilst the sand and gravel deposits targeted by the marine aggregate industry are generally relict and therefore geographically fixed, the remaining factors have evolved over time and will continue to do so in future. Applications for new licences must not only reflect the current situation, but anticipate future trends. The main markets for marine aggregates are the construction industry, centred around the larger centres of population and coastal protection projects along the coastline of Europe. The aggregate industry as a whole does not create demand but simply meets it. Many factors influence the overall demand for aggregates and guidance exists for those in authority and industry who need to plan for the supply of aggregates. Adequate supplies should be maintained at the best balance of social, environmental and economic cost, whilst ensuring that extraction and development are consistent with the principles of sustainable development.

Recommendations have been drafted following an international multidisciplinary panel discussion organized at UNESCO/IOC by the Académie des Sciences d?Outre-Mer on 15 December 2010 conveyed, according to its mandate, to the French government and to an international pool of scientists and stakeholders. These take into consideration the relevant Provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 10 December 1982, the Rio ?Earth Summit? Convention of Biological Diversity of 5 June 1992 as well as the activities and recommendations implemented for the world?s oceans and seas, in particular by the International Seabed Authority (ISA) and the recent reports and scientific works (including those implemented by the ISA Kaplan, Ifremer, COI-Unesco). The recommendations integrate, for one of the ecosystems, the conclusions of the project of the conclusions of an IOC-UNESCO / Government of Flanders project (2004-2010) implemented by Dr. V. Seafloor massive sulfides have been a subject of interest for profitable commercial mining these ten years. Because of the higher Au, Ag, and Cu contents, they have received much attention as immediate commercial mining targets by private companies and nations. Some of them already proposed the technologies necessary for the commercial mining. However, the technologies for survey, excavation, lifting, and ore dressing have not yet well been examined from viewpoint of the economy. In this presentation, the authors present some key factors and improvements for better economy in the mining.

The Neptune Group was established in 1999 to apply for exploration permits within New Zealand’s 200nm EEZ. These applications were to investigate and commercialise hydrothermal Seafloor Massive Sulphide (SMS) deposits identified by international researchers and to locate others. SMS are volcanically related seafloor accumulations of copper, lead and zinc with high levels of gold and silver. Neptune has three granted exploration licenses within the New Zealand EEZ and has application in other jurisdictions. Neptune undertook the world’s first commercial drilling exploration work of SMS in December of 2005.

Recent studies estimate the depletion mid-point (dmp) for conventional natural gas to be reached around year 2022, and for conventional oil to be reached around year 2017. These numbers are based on simplified assumptions of unchanged demand and do not include increasing reserves from discovery of new fields and also do not include a shifting of resources to reserves e.g. due to an increasing oil price (Gerling et al., 2005). Anyhow, these prospects require conventional hydrocarbons to be substituted in the near future.

The first, profitable, marine placer mining started with tin 100 years ago but no major industry developed until the mid-20th. Century. Dredging at sea yielded cassiterite in both South Thailand and Indonesia, and remains an important state-run industry in the latter country. Malaysia and Russia have also contributed production, and the coastal waters of Tasmania and England have been explored. Marine placer deposits of gold have been examined in New Zealand, Chile, Argentina, Russia and West Africa. Philippino deposits were dredged during the 1930s. Fifty years later, at Nome in Alaska, gold was recovered by dredging from the offshore, and the technical/economic benefits of a seabed-deployed crawler were first demonstrated. Off the coast of Namibia placer diamonds were recovered by airlift mining during the 1960’s, but De Beers effectively started the existing marine diamond industry in 1989. The Wirth drill and a crawler continue to be used by the company, and plans recently have been announced for operations in South African waters. Other commodities such as mineral sands, platinum group minerals, and chromite have been investigated offshore in several worldwide localities.

The Norwegian EEZ contains large areas of interest for SMS exploration along the Mid- Atlantic Ridge, from Jan Mayen to Svalbard. At the same time Norwegian companies engaged in oil and gas activities are in the forefront of subsea development. This makes Norway ideally positioned to take a leading role within marine minerals research and commercialization. In the recent minerals strategy from the Norwegian Government marine minerals was pointed out as one of the strategic areas for the future. The Norwegian University of Science and Technology has established a research program in cooperation with Norwegian industry partners to determine the commercial potential of marine minerals in Norwegian EEZ. This presentation will give an overview of the status of marine minerals research and potential in Norway.

The survey of the cobalt-rich crust of the Republic of the Marshall Islands was carried out in 1996 and 1998, as the cooperative study project between Japan and SOPAC member countries, and at the thirteen seamounts, seafloor topographic maps and acoustic reflection intensity distribution images by MBES were obtained, and the collection of samples by dredging was conducted. On the basis of the previous results, three seamounts, MS01, MS11 and MS12 were selected for the 2002 year survey, and drilling by BMS (deep sea boring system) was conducted there, to understand the occurrence of cobalt-rich crust. At the same time, environmental survey was carried out to make clear the environmental characteristics of the area. The summary of the survey will be reported.
